Full textThe dissertation focuses on the recent transformations of the Maramures, rural communities in the context of the widespread post-communist practice of lodging tourists in inhabited houses or in specially designed rural pensions. The tourism industry that produces mass tourism and the process of institutionalization of tourism in rural areas which operates under the conventional economic rules will remain out of the scope of the dissertation. I plan to unveil and investigate the many facets of rural tourism in Maramures and understand this phenomenon as one of the factors of social, cultural and especially identity change within the rural communities of Maramures. I strove to identify the inhabitants of rural Maramures who are engaged in this type of activities. I will insist on the way the owners of tourist pensions in Maramures "sell" their identity to tourists, and on how some "cultural" elements that are part of their traditional domestic environment - festive clothes or cuisine - are converted into tourist attractions. The challenge was to understand how the identity of Maramures peasants - formely so entrenched in their daily life experiences - transformed itself under the current conditions of rural tourism into "capital" to exploit and invest in tourist activities. The study is based on a contextual and interpretative approach, with a special emphasize on the meaning given by the owner of pensions to their practices and their representations in the presnece of hosted tourists

Full textIs the end of collectivism in the romanian contrysides dominated by a "retourn of the peasantry" or even a re-establishment of village and peasant values in the romanian society? Between 1991 and 1994, romanian has indeed witnessed a land reform which is unique among the post-socialist countries of central and eastern europe, both by its nature and its demensions : the liquidation of agricultural cooperatives and the reconstitution of private land ownership lead to a spliting-up of land without precedent (9 million hectares of land were redistributed to 5. 6 million owners); at the same time, the equipment of production crumbled spectaculary. By its very force, the process lead to an upset of the relation between society its space, more, to the shaking of the understanding of the national territory. The hypothesis of this work is that a geographic approach, that tales into account different spatial dimensions of change, can enlightyen the issues and the nature of the transformation. The study is carried on two levels : a at the national level, andb - at the local level of four communities taken as « observatories ». At both geographical levels, we study how the objective constraints and the cultural systems of representation tie up to influence decisions. We also analyse the post-socialist dynamic in the light of political and social history, that in romania is earmarked by large land reforms for more than a century

Full textThe purpose of this dissertation is Transylvania history at the threshold of modern times, that is from the late 17th century until the 18th century (1680-1800). However this is an approach carried out with means provided by modern history, those of collective mentality and of imagination. From the outset, it should be noted that Transylvanian civilisation showed, at the time, the specific features of rural society, of the Ancien Regime' kind, the availing itself of quasi independent supremacy until the end of the 17th century when it yielded to the Habsburg's ruling for over two centuries. The fundamental landmarks of that civilisation (political and administrative organisation, housing typology, demographic figures) along with ethnic groups' and congregation's customs of each of these peoples are dealt with in the first chapter. The subsequent section (Chapters 2 through 5) sets out the core mental frames of Romanian rural civilisation in Transylvania : view of the world, the perception of time and space, relationships between religious rules and religion in use, attitudes toward conventional values and rituals over a lifetime (family, children, christening, marriage, procreation, women's status) together with reactions before death and the conception of the new world. The second section seeks to give a clear view of issues relating political and socila mental formulation : the image of Romanians facing the sensitivity of states and Transylvanian orders (congregations such as Hungarians, Szeklers, Saxons) along with that of the Viennese imperial court, the image of oneself and nascent national concern raising among the Romanians as well as the image of servile condition and the imaginary structure of the 'Good Emperor' myth regarding the Empress Marie-Therese and her son Joseph II. This dissertation stands for a first attempt at synthesis of the history of mentality and imagination on Transylvanian space at beginning of modern times

Full textCaught in the inescapability of history, the East-Central European peasantry actively participated in the major events that defined this space during the modern period. In the complex rural society of the Transylvanian Romanian ploughmen, which makes the subject of this work, the outside world was both a mirage and a mundane experience. Treated as homogenous assembles, as unitary masses, and often reproduced by the grand historiographical narratives of the past century from the perspective of a class struggle, the peasantry was repeatedly unjustifiably martyrised. Even when this was not the case, the interest showed to the Transylvanian village remained tributary to specific themes questioning the development of the institutions rather than of the population that enforced them. Constructing on these previous historiographical efforts, the main questions addressed in this research aim to discover who the members of this rural society are and what drove them to adapt and accept novelty in the face of the constant challenges of history. Requiring a permanent balance between accessing personal stories and connecting those stories to the significant historical events that were taking place in Transylvania and Europe in general, mixed-method research was employed using townhall records, parish records and correspondence, civil status records, newspapers and periodicals, oral history interviews and a series of ego documents such as photography and memoirs. Revealing individualities whose acceptance of tradition was constructed in consonance with their pragmatic desideratum, the members of this agrarian society, that dominated the Transylvanian social landscape until the twentieth century, embraced change as a perquisite of survival, resulting in surprisingly original answers

The goal of this PhD research is to show the connection between two parallel mobility phenomena that have the potential to dramatically change a local society. There are two strongly linked “mobility corridors” in Maramures. Incoming mobility, i.e. the arrival of foreigners, largely involves tourists, whilst outgoing mobility consists mostly of labour migration.
Rural tourism is embedded in a particular social, political and historical context. The alleged specificity of this area is a well-preserved authenticity, with a strong background of national discourse. Maramures is seen as an “authentic”, “archaic” or “traditional” area, so it attracts a particular category of visitor, as is often the case in rural tourism. The evolution of this tourism phenomenon is the result of the complex intersection of different actors’ interests, and migrants play a major role.
A large part of the labour migrants’ remittances is invested in rural tourism, directly or indirectly. Moreover, these migrants function as cultural brokers for tourism-related activities. Participation in either rural tourism or migration often facilitates access to the other. However, it also creates tensions and social gaps.
The steady growth of tourism and migration is both cause and effect of an interdependence between the cultural and economic models of Eastern and Western societies.
