Full textThis PhD work deals with the development of the laser soldering technique. The research is focused on the physico-chemical phenomena occurring during this particular process. They lead to the manufacture of several prototypes for the industrial use of this innovative assembling technology. The work is divided into three main parts: a study of the art of the electronic soldering technique, an experimental approach of the laser soldering process applied to the micro-mechanic and the micro-electronic fields, and finally a numerical approach of the heat transfers that occurs during various laser soldering processes. First of all, the experimental study is focused on the assembling of dissimilar materials (e. G. : ceramic-metal) by the means of laser soldering. The manufacture of new objects is thus feasible mainly in the micro mechanic field. Afterwards, the study of direct laser interaction on solder pastes also leads to the assembling of several prototypes in the micro-electronic field. This experimental work is completed by the development of models related to the heat transfers occurring during several laser soldering processes for a better understanding of the technique. The main role of flux evaporation included in solder paste, the matter of design rules of electronic circuits so as an innovative beam shaping technique are finally discussed during this scientific approach

Full textAutism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social and communication impairments, with abnormal repetitive and stereotypic behaviors. Cardio-respiratory, motor and autonomic disorders are found on autistic children and may limit them in a physical effort. This work has been done to evaluate the physical condition of children with autism compared to control children. Forty boys aged from 8 to 13 had participated in the study: 20 control children (CONT: 10.0±1.6 years) and 20 children with autism (AUT: 10.7±1.3 years; IQ> 70). A maximal effort on treadmill had measured the maximum oxygen consumption rate (VO2max). The autonomic nervous system had been assessed by heart rate variability on an orthostatic test and nocturnal recordings. Motor abilities had been determined by using three batteries of additional motor tests (EUROFIT, M-ABC and PANESS). Sleep and physical activity had been collected by actigraphy and questionnaires, and linked with physical fitness. After the maximal effort, the result of this test had shown that autistic children had lower VO2pic values and shorter exercise duration. Evaluations of the autonomic nervous system also showed greater heart rate variability in autism, including a parasympathetic tone significantly higher compared to controls. The motor tests showed significant impairments in autism compared to controls on all motor skills and especially on static balance, dynamic balance and muscle strength. Finally, children with autism had lower physical activity level than control while sleep indices are similar between the two groups. Then, these results show specificities in the physical fitness for autism children that might limit them in a physical exercise. However, in our study, all children had shown an ability to perform a maximal exercise test. Autistic children seemed to be more limited to maintain this effort by the autistic features (motivation, restricted interests ...) that would lead to limit physical engagement. By this test, we may advance that children with autism may have barriers which must be lifted to adapt physical activity to their needs and abilities and then promote their integration

Full textThis master’s thesis is part of a multidisciplinary project to develop a second generation of tidal oscillating wings turbine (HAO-2) at Laboratoire de Mécanique des Fluides Numérique (LMFN) from Laval University. This tidal turbine completely submerged is composed of four wings assembled on gravity-based structure. This work has two parts. The first one focuses on the hydraulic circuit design of the pitch-heave coupling and the energy extraction system. Proposed solutions and a vision of the HAO-2 will be presented in detail. An experimental apparatus is designed to reproduce the coupling circuit and simulate the motion and forces on a wing. It allows to demonstrate the developed system feasibility and determine its efficiency. Various actuators and seals are analyzed. Only components with the best performances are presented in this paper. For the coupling system, a maximum efficiency of 80% is measured. Hydraulic modeling necessary for the second phase of the project has also been calibrated on experimental data, especially, friction in seals. The second part treats the economic modeling of a tidal turbine farm at different scales and in different operating conditions. The program designs the turbine depending on the operating conditions, and then, it estimates the construction cost and it calculates the annual energy extracted. It also calculates the installation cost, the electricity infrastructure and their installation cost and finally the operation and maintenance cost (O&M) throughout the farm life time. The model also takes into account the value of money over time by using the net present value. For the cases comparison, the production cost (CP) and the energy cost (CE) are used. Several sensitivity analyses are carried out on the important parameters of the model. As would be expected, the construction cost and the O&M cost are key factors governing the energy cost of HAO. A particular site is studied, near the Isle-aux-Coudres, which a energy cost about 20 ¢/kWh is obtained for a farm with 80 HAO of 1.25MW each.

Full textEcoimmunology focuses on an integrative approach of host-pathogens interactions from the molecular mechanics of immune responses to the role of immunity in shaping the evolution of life history traits. Here, we proposed to study the variation of immunocompetence in two natural contrasted populations of roe deer. However, available methods to characterize immune system in wild populations are still limited. Consequently, in this context, the goals of this work were i) to identify methods to investigate the roe deer immune system and to adapt these methods developed for other species to roe deer, ii) to study the relationships between potential drivers of immunocomptence, including body condition and parasitism, and iii) to study variation of immunocompetence with body condition on one hand, and in the context of sexual selection, with secondary sexual characters on the other hand. We measured simultaneously several components of immunity including descriptive measures, as numeration of leucocytes subsets, and functional measures with hemagglutination-hemolysis, lymphocyte proliferation by mitogens stimulation or phagocytosis. We found a negative correlation between body condition and parasitism and senescence patterns in haematological and biochemical parameters. Moreover, we showed variations of immunocompetence with body condition and secondary sexual characters. This work corroborates some hypotheses of evolutionary biology

Full textThe ambition of these thesis was to search corrélations between adhesive and tribological behaviors of model elastomers. We try to compare the influence of dissipative effects on friction and adhesive phenomena, we analyze the influence of structural parameters (molecular weight, free chains extraction) and expérimental paraineters (speed, contact time, normal load). The objective is to determine molecular parameters that govem those phenomena. The elastomers used are polydiméthylsiloxane studied after and between free chains extraction. The mechanical, surface, adhesive and tribological properties of crosslinked PDMS are determined at macroscopic and microscopie scales by AFM. So, we proposed interracial molecular mechanisms that govem PDMS behaviors in adhesion and friction

Full textIntroduction: Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading cause of death and is mostly caused by the formation of atherogenic plaques. These plaques appear during adolescence, and their growth depends on numerous risk factors, both non-modifiable (age, gender) and modifiable (lipid profile, blood pressure, glycemia, smoking, body mass index). Nutrition, physical activity and fitness are complex elements that have been shown to have a significant impact on modifiable risk factors in mostly cross-sectional studies.Material & Methods: The aim of this study is to identify, in a longitudinal way, parameters of nutrition, physical activity and physical fitness in adolescence that have an impact on adult cardiovascular risk. These analyses are based on data from the HELENA and BELINDA studies. The HELENA study (2006 - 2007) included 3528 adolescents aged from 12.5 to 17.5 years in 10 European countries, and collected extensive nutritional, physical activity, fitness, anthropometric and biological data. The BELINDA study (2016 - 2020) is a nested cohort that repeated the same analyses, a decade later, in 232 subjects from 4 centers (Ghent, Lille, Roma and Zaragoza). Parameters of interest were identified based on bibliographic resources and data available from these two cohorts. Their impact on cardiovascular risk was assessed by a multivariate statistical analysis. Cardiovascular risk was assessed according to modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and the PDAY (Pathobiological Determinants for Atherosclerosis in Youth) cardiovascular risk score. The parameters identified as most relevant for their potential to predict cardiovascular risk will be the target of more specific studies. Results: The literature analysis identified 13 parameters of interest, including 8 for nutrition, 2 for physical activity and 3 for fitness. Adherence to the diet quality index, planetary health diet index, dietary knowledge and cardiorespiratory fitness were the parameters identified as cardioprotective, in contrary to consumption of ultra-processed foods and upper body muscular strength. An extensive analysis of dietary knowledge highlighted its beneficial long-term impact on adults' blood pressure and dietary behaviour.Discussion: The diet quality index, the planetary health diet index, dietary knowledge, consumption of ultra-processed foods, cardiorespiratory fitness and upper body muscular strength in adolescence have all been shown to have a significant impact on cardiovascular risk in adulthood. Early approaches using these tools therefore seem relevant for identifying clusters of populations at-risk and preventing cardiovascular risk from an early age

Full textPhysical self-concept plays a critical role in the learning process and motor performance. Based on structural equation modeling methodology, four studies supported the cross-national generalizability of a physical self-concept model over several French samples and emphasized the usefulness of this construct in a causation research exploring relations among physical self- perceptions and environment variables. The factorial validity of an Australian physical self-concept instrument: The Physical Self-Description questionnaire (PSDQ) by H. W. Marsh was supported with a sample of French adolescents in a school environment. Moreover, the within- construct validity was supplemented by an MTMM analysis, involving two other physical self- concept models, which supported convergent and discriminant validity. Pursuing the validation on-going process, between-construct validity was next tested and supported in relation to a set of external criteria from the EUROFIT fitness test battery. Finally, a longitudinal panel study assessing causal directions among physical self-concept, P. E. Achievements, strength, cardiorespiratory endurance and physical activity objective measures provided some support for causal relations between physical self-concept and fitness tests and better evidence for reciprocal effects between physical self-concept and P. E. Achievements. Additionally, it was shown that these causal relations were not mediated by global self-concepts

At the request of the “Réseau du Sport étudiant du Québec”, the “En forme au secondaire” fitness test (B-EFAS) was developed. A total of 1626 high school students in Montreal and Saguenay were tested through a series of physical fitness tests : the 20-metre shuttle run test with 1 minute stage, the RSEQ anaerobic test, the fifteen-metre sprint round trip, the vertical jump, the paced push-ups, the paced sit-ups and the V-test. Multivariate analysis with distinctions of sexual and regional disparities was used to obtain a portrait of fitness. It is corroborated that boys get higher score at muscular tests and that girls perform better in flexibility. Forty-four percent (44%) of participants have obesity-related health risk. Between 1981 and 2014, the young were taller (♀ +1.67 cm, ♂ +2.25 cm), heavier (♀ +5.8 kg, ♂ + 5.6 kg) and their VO2max fell 13% (♀ -5 ml min-1 kg-1, ♂ -7 ml min-1 kg-1). The VO2max regresses between the ages of 12 and 17 among Quebeckers. Preliminary norms were built using LMS methods for all tests. Our research demonstrate that the RSEQ battery is evaluating and monitoring the progress of fitness at the High School level. Our study also shows that the physical condition of young people is likely to be affected by the global obesity epidemic and that significant changes in their lifestyle will be needed in order to reverse the situation.

Full textThis thesis fits the assessment and follow-up by physical activity of obese adolescents. Two studies measured their psychophysiological responses to an intermittent progressive and maximal running test in 15-15 (Rossi et al., 2009). Compared to the 20 m shuttle run test (Léger et al., 1988), the 15-15 test is considered as relevant for such population as it leads to similar maximal physiological responses, but also to higher speeds and better perceived physical condition of the participants. Two other studies evaluated the effects of a 5 week program of intermittent exercises at vigorous intensity (VIT) on body composition, objective and perceived physical conditions of obese adolescents. The program included 3 weekly VIT sessions that differed in the type and duration of the included sport and physical activities. Improvements were obtained in body composition, functional capacities, particularly among boys, and in most of the scales of perceived physical capacities. The longest VIT sessions led to rapid and regular improvements of all scales of perceived physical capacities

Full textTHz radiation is extremely attractive for fundamental investigations of matter and emerging applications including, for example, security screening, medical imaging, and spectroscopy. However, the THz spectral range remains one of the least exploited spectral regions, mainly due to the lack of compact powerful THz sources/amplifiers and passive devices. This thesis concerns the development of advanced THz devices based on graphene material. The first project focuses on the carrier lifetime in neutral graphene-hBN van der Waals heterostructures under mid-infrared illumination. The carrier lifetime in such device for photoexcited carriers at low density and energy is reported to be ~30ps using mid-infrared photoconductivity measurements. By igniting the hyperbolic phonon polaritons in hBN via an electrical or optical pump, we demonstrate that the carrier lifetime is switched from ~30ps down to few picoseconds. This project opens interesting perspectives for the development of THz lasers by exploiting graphene/hBN heterostructures, for the realization of highly sensitive THz photodetectors as well as for phonon polariton optics. A second project reports on original devices based on hybrid semiconductor-metal waveguides coupled to the graphene layer. These devices, which are easy to fabricate, can act as THz amplitude modulators and THz amplifiers. First, we numerically investigate the dispersion relation of the two fundamental propagation modes of these hybrid waveguides. Then, we experimentally characterize these graphene-coupled waveguides using THz time-domain spectroscopy. We demonstrate that these devices act as Mach-Zehnder modulators at 2 THz and 5.7 THz, the cut-off frequencies of TE0 and TE1 modes respectively. This project opens interesting perspectives on the modulation of THz waves and represents an important building block for the realization of THz lasers

Full textThis work deals with the synthesis, the physico-chemical and mechanical caracterisation of coatings obtained by cathodic magnetron sputtering of a metallic austenitic stainless steel target in different argon - reactive gas (nitrogen, methan or oxygen) mixtures. The metastable solid solutions which are nitrogen, carbon or oxygen supersatured, as weIl as the ceramic compound of oxide type (Fe, Cr, Ni)₃O₄, with their different crystalline or amorphous structures are studied by means of the main diffraction techniques of structural analysis and physical methods of chemical analysis. The second part of this work aims to point out the complete mechanical properties of the different coatings and composite (coating + substrat). The intrinsic properties of the different coatings were first studied in relation with the elaboration parameters and structural properties. Vickers indentation as well as single pass and triboscopic multipass scratch testing were then performed on the three type of N, C, 0 doped coatings, in order to establish a relation between the brittleness or ductility and the tribological behaviour (friction, wear)

Full textPhysical activity and ingested nutrients take part in the regulation of the internal clock andsleep physiology. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in this topic. However, studiesremain almost exclusively limited to adults. Adolescence is marked by critical transitionsthat may trigger several behavioral disturbances particularly with regard to sleep. A problemcompounded by an array of endogenous and exogenous factors forming the so called“Perfect Storm” of both altered sleep duration and quality. Obesity and elite sport are twofactors that have been separately associated with sleep disturbances, and have a negativeimpact on holistic development, with lowered performance and altered health status ofadolescents, both physical (recovery, metabolism, growth, weight control) and cognitive(learning, memory, decision-making, vigilance). Therefore, the purpose of this work was toexplore the effect of physical activity and nutrition on sleep among these two distinctadolescent populations. Altered sleep pattern in young athletes seems to be more related tosport constraints such as competition and travel. However, acute exercise improves sleepduration in quality in both populations (athlete and with obesity). Moreover, dietary intakeseems to be a promising alternative to improve sleep quality. Only three days undercontrolled feeding fixed at the recommended dietary allowance resulted in reduced sleeponset latency in adolescents with obesity compared to ad-libitum condition. Finally, randomized controlled studies are needed to support the effect of certain nutrients on sleep.PROTMORPHEUS study will bring a fuller understanding of the effect of proteintryptophan/large neutral amino acids ratio on sleep

Full textThis thesis has for main purpose the study and optimization in industrial environment of Si/SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors having very high performances for telecommunication and radar detection applications. The first chapter is a reminder of the theory of the bipolar transistor, both in its static and dynamic operations. We present in the second chapter a history of the fabrication technologies of SiGeC HBTs, explaining the reasons leading to a fully self aligned structure with selective epitaxial growth of the base. Performances obtained in this thesis are compared with the state of the art. The third chapter deals with the classical optimization of the bipolar transistor, and we demonstrate how, by several optimizations made on the vertical profile and the lateral extension of the device, we could push up the performances from 200GHz up to 300GHz reached at the end of this work. Chapter IV deals with the optimization of the BVceo voltage by technological processes breaking out from the standard optimization scheme. Significant improvements of the breakdown voltage are demonstrated, which enables to get state of the art fTxBVceo products. Finally, the last chapter has for objective the study of the HBT behavior with temperature: We describe first the self-heating of the transistor, and its impact on dynamic performances. We finish by the study of the bipolar transistor at cryogenic temperatures. Dynamic performances are strongly improved at low temperature, we can deduct from the extraction of the several delays on the device interesting perspectives for further optimization of the transit times, to reach ultimate performances

Full textThe actual portrait of the health behaviours of young adults reveals alarming data about the physical activity level (Colley, Garriguet, Janssen, Craig, Clarke & Tremblay, 2011). To help them adopt increase their physical activity level, it seems appropriate to set up interventions that mobilize the action of their peers (Canadian Institute for Research on Fitness and Lifestyle, 2014; 2015). They seem to give them special importance when the time comes to adopt healthy lifestyle habits (DuBois & Karcher, 2014). Therefore, peer mentoring seems a promising avenue. Although the characteristics of this type of intervention have been documented in the literature, few studies have evaluated its effects in mentees (Sallis, Calfas, Nichols, Sarkin, Johnson, Caparosa, Thomson & Alcaraz, 1999; Boyle, Mattern, Lassister & Ritzler, 2011) and even fewer have done so with mentors (Lubans, Morgan, Aguiar & Callister, 2011). From this perspective, the present study had two objectives: 1) to evaluate the effects of a peer mentoring program in college settings on the practice of physical activity, physical condition, eating behaviours, consumption of fruits and vegetables. and the sense of personal effectiveness of mentees and mentors; 2) explore the moderating role of gender and participants' initial level of physical activity on the effects of the program. These objectives were investigated using a study with a quasi-experimental design using 104 young adults (mentors n = 38, non-mentors n = 33, mentees n = 21 and non-mentees n = 12). Questionnaires as well as physical tests made it possible to measure the main variables. The covariance analyzes show that at the end of the intervention, mentees adopted fewer behaviours aimed at gaining weight than non-mentees, while mentors adopted fewer behaviours aimed at losing weight than non-mentors. In addition, moderation analyzes reveal effects in men regardless of their initial level of physical activity but not in women. In fact, 1) mentee men exhibit better estimated maximal volume of oxygen consumption (VO₂ max) than non-mentee men, 2) male mentors show a lower body mass index (BMI) than non-mentor men and 3) male mentors report more behaviours aimed at gaining weight than non-mentor men. However, although our results suggest these effects, it seems essential to us to interpret them with caution due to some methodological limitations, in particular the small sampling. We often see them as tendencies to take in count for future research. However, our results suggest that we must consider sex of participants when time comes to orient, implement, and operationalize mentoring programs, particularly for the mentors.

Full textHemming is an assembly process using to join sheet metal parts for closures of automotive bodies such as side doors, hoods and tailgates. An outer sheet metal is bent onto an inner sheet metal in three steps : flanging, pre-hemming and hemming. Hemming generates a reductionin size of the outer panel ( rollin), aspect defects and sometimes cracks of the sheet metals. In order to minimize the development cost and time, PSA Peugeot Citroën uses numerical simulations of the process with the finite element code OPTRIS v6. 1 based on a shell element formulation. The aim of this work is to improve numerical simulations by a better understanding and modeling of the material model used for sheet metals in hemming and the friction model between the outer part and the hemming dies. Because the radius of curvature of the outer sheet is comparable to its thickness, we estimate the performance of shell elements to model such large strains. Uni-axial tensile tests coupled with a strain measurement system using correlation of digital images are performed with micro-hardness tests on hemmed parts. The aim is to determine the monotonic hardening curves at strain levels similar to those obtained in the extension part of the hemmed sheet (around 0. 5 for 1 mm thick aluminium alloy sheets and 0. 7 for 0. 7 mm thick steel sheets). 4 point bending and bending/unbending tests are performed for the material characterization in non monotonic hardening laws deduced from tensile and micro-hardness tests. Moreover, they allow the Bauschinger effect characterization by the identification of the coefficients of combined isotropic/kinematic hardening models

Full textHow does the passageway from a corporeity socially allotted to a subjectively suitable corporeity take place? Observation and analysis take into account physical activities, food, dress practices and esthetics which define the privileged stakes of the social construction of the body, as shown through a follow-up within a period of time. To seize the post-modern somatic culture, the examination of 274 press magazines enables to distinguish six body esthetic models. An ethnographic study of Health Centers makes it possible to objectify the types of institutional order which conveys these models. Thanks to 57 interviews, the heterogeneity of the body practices which play with these models (and play about it) takes the contours of a typology where fragile and anachronistic bodies (those of the disease or old age) are confronted with bodies in search of physical excellence (in which the sense breaks up according to the gender), without forgetting the body-symptoms (worked by the bulimia and the anorexia) and the bodies burdens (of which obesity is the typical figure)
