Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay sheds light on Brazilian artist Hudinilson Jr.’s Cadernos de referências (c. 1981-2013), a series of dense and layered scrapbooks. Through an analysis of layouts and media, the investigation highlights the extensive design and cultural implications that the practice triggers. The focus lies primarily on formal recurrences and narrative strategies identified on double page spreads, revealing how they condense the artist’s queer poetics. The Cadernos emerge as an everyday practice of exploration of the human body, a space for self-design and cultural resistance, and a tool for questioning the relationship between the exposed body, self-image, and mass media.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chemical composition and physical properties are measured and inspected for China railway grade B cast steel wheel. The wheel shows slight higher for chemical elements C and Cr, much higher for Al and Mo, and significant lower for P and S comparing to the AAR code. Gross pearlites plus net-like continuum ferrites appear in wheel hub; ferrites exhibit also net-likely but dis-continuously in web with a shot peening effect; and in rim, dis-continuous ferrites with few of net-like signs distribute randomly due to a quenching and tempering effect. Bigger hardness values appear in rim; and the values in web and hub appear a decrease in sequence. Major flaw affecting material condense is shrinkage porosities. Flawed content is closely between hub and web. More condense appears in rim. Material inclusions are non-metallic compounds of MnS and Al2O3. They appear sphere-like shapes having around 8 μm diameters.

Abstract:
Eukaryotic dsDNA viruses use small basic protamine-like proteins or histones, typically <15 kDa, to condense and encapsidate their genomic (g)DNAs during virogenesis. Ascoviruses are large dsDNA (~100–200 kbp) viruses that are pathogenic to lepidopteran larvae. Little is known about the molecular basis for condensation and encapsidation of their gDNAs. Previous proteomic analysis showed that Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus (SfAV-1a) virions contain a large unique DNA-binding protein (P64; 64 kDa, pI = 12.2) with a novel architecture proposed to condense its gDNA. Here we used physical, biochemical, and transmission electron microscopy techniques to demonstrate that P64’s basic C-terminal domain condenses SfAV-1a gDNA. Moreover, we demonstrate that only P64 homologs in other ascovirus virions are unique in stably binding DNA. As similar protein families or subfamilies were not identified in extensive database searches, our collective data suggest that ascovirus P64 homologs comprise a novel family of atypical large viral gDNA condensing proteins.

AbstractLet A be a finite dimensional algebra over a finite field F. Condensing an A-module V with two different idempotents e and e′ leads to the problem that to compare the composition series of V e and V e′, we need to match the composition factors of both modules. In other words, given a composition factor S of V e, we have to find a composition factor S′ of V e′ such that there exists a composition factor Ŝ of V with Ŝ e ≅ S and Ŝ e′ ≅ S′, or prove that no such S′ exists. In this note, we present a computationally tractable solution to this problem.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
We calculate the oblique electroweak corrections and confront them with the experiments in a composite Higgs version of the standard model. A vector-like weak doublet and a singlet fermion are added to the standard model without elementary Higgs. Due to quartic coupling, there is a mixing between the components of the new fields triggering electroweak symmetry breaking. The Peskin–Takeuchi S and T electroweak parameters are presented. The new sector of vector-like fermions is slightly constrained, T gives an upper bound on the mixing angle of the new fermions, which is already constrained by self-consistent gap-equations. S gives no constraints on the masses. This extension can give a positive contribution to T, allowing for a heavy Higgs boson in electroweak precision tests of the Standard Model.

Abstract:
Condensins I and II are multisubunit complexes that play essential yet distinct functions in chromosome condensation and segregation in mitosis. Unlike condensin I, condensin II localizes to the nucleus during interphase, but it remains poorly understood what functions condensin II might have before mitotic entry. Here, we report that condensin II changes its chromatin-binding property during S phase. Remarkably, advanced premature chromosome condensation (PCC) assays enabled us to visualize condensin II forming “sister axes” in replicated regions of chromosomes in S phase cells. Depletion of condensin II compromised PCC-driven sister chromatid resolution during S phase. Moreover, fluorescence in situ hybridization assays revealed that condensin II, but not condensin I, promotes disjoining duplicated chromosomal loci during S phase. Application of mild replicative stress partially impaired this process and further exacerbated phenotypes arising from condensin II depletion. Our results suggest that condensin II initiates structural reorganization of duplicated chromosomes during S phase to prepare for their proper condensation and segregation in mitosis.

Equilibrium calculation containing 211 species of 22 elements has been used to study the effect of condensation on molecular abundances as a function of temperature (T) and pressure (P). The condensation of 162 species are tested and 65 species in solar composition and 64 in a C-rich composition have been found to condense. The calculations show the expected result that the abundances of molecules containing condensable elements like Si, Al, Mg, Fe, Zr and Ti in solar composition and C together with above elements in carbon rich composition reduce significantly with condensation. Surprisingly, the abundances of molecules containing S, F and Cl in solar composition and O, S, F and Cl in carbon rich composition are enhanced with condensation but abundances of molecules containing CO like H2CO, HCO in carbon rich composition hardly varies.

Abstract:
This study investigated the main microbial groups characterizing the interior surface of oak barrels from different years (1890, 1895, 1920, 1975, 2008) used in the production of vino cotto. The yeasts were characterized for the following properties: γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production, antioxidant activity, air–liquid interfacial biofilm formation, and anthocyanin adsorption capacity. Community-level physiological profile analysis revealed that the microbial communities inside the barrels used the tested carbon sources in different manners. The following yeast species were identified: Millerozyma farinosa, Zygosaccharomyces bisporus, Wickerhamiella versatilis, Zygosaccharomyces bailii, Starmerella lactis-condensi, and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii. All the strains were able to produce GABA, and S. lactis-condensi, Z. bisporus and Z. rouxii were the highest producers (more than 600 mg/L). The Z. rouxii and Z. bailii strains showed the highest antioxidant activity. Only seven strains out of ten M. farinosa formed air–liquid interfacial biofilm. None of the M. farinosa strains adsorbed anthocyanins on their cell wall. The other strains adsorbed anthocyanins in a strain-dependent way, and the highest adsorption was observed for the W. versatilis strains. The yeasts isolated in this study could be used to increase the functional properties and the quality of fermented foods and beverages.

Abstract:
In March of 2013, new symptoms were observed in more than seven million nursery-grown sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants in El Ejido, Almería (southern Spain). Symptoms included wilting without yellowing of leaves and stunting of plants. Plant crowns exhibited necrosis that advanced through the main root along with slight root rot. Xylem was not affected above or below the crown. Symptoms were thought to be caused by the well-known pepper pathogen Phytophthora capsici. However, sporodochia of Fusarium oxysporum were observed on plant crowns. Symptomatic seedlings (n = 200) were sampled and analyzed. Tissue from roots and epidermal crowns were plated on PDA, PARP, and Komada media, as well as stem discs on PDA and Komada. No Phytophthora sp. were observed and F. oxyporum was exclusively isolated from all 200 samples, from roots and crowns, but not from xylem. Pathogenicity of 60 of these F. oxysporum isolates was studied by inoculation onto sweet pepper plants (cv. del Piquillo) at the 2-true-leaf stage. Twelve plants per isolate, grown on autoclaved vermiculite, were inoculated by drenching with 20 ml of a conidial suspension (1 × 105 CFU/ml) of each isolate per plant. Each suspension was obtained by blending one PDA petri dish fully covered with one isolate. Non-inoculated plants served as control. Plants were maintained for 30 days in a growth chamber with a 14-h photoperiod (1.6 ×·104 lux) and temperatures at 23 to 26°C. The assay was conducted twice. Symptoms described above were reproduced on crown and roots of the inoculated plants with no symptoms in stem discs. No symptoms were observed on controls after 48 days. Host specificity was tested for 13 isolates to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cv. San Pedro, eggplant (S. melongena) cv. Alegria, cucumber (Cucumis sativus) cv. Marketmore, watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) cv. Sugar Baby, and Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. condensa) cv. Kasumi (4). These plants were inoculated as previously described for pathogenicity tests (12 plants per species, repeated twice). None of the plants exhibited the characteristic symptoms after 60 days. Five isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum and four isolates of F. o. f. sp radicis-lycopersici were also inoculated without any symptoms in any of the inoculated sweet pepper plants. Morphological identity of all isolates corresponded to F. oxysporum. The fungi were identified following the morphological keys and methodology provided by (1) and (2). Three isolates from the 60 tested were selected for molecular identification. Molecular identification was performed by sequencing partial TEF-1α gene (3). Subsequent database searches by BLASTn indicated that the resulting sequence of 659-bp had 100% identity with the corresponding gene sequence of F. oxysporum. The sequences were identical for the three isolates and were deposited on the EMBL Sequence Database (HG916993, HG916994, and HG916995). Results suggest that the pathogenic ability of the isolates varies from a vascular Fusarium wilt. F. oxysporum f. sp. capsici is a reported pathogen to sweet pepper (5), but the symptoms we have found are closer to those manifested by the formae speciales that causes root and crown rot of other plants. Consistent with the convention stablished for similar diseases we propose the name F. oxysporum f. sp. radicis-capsici f. sp. nov. References: (1) J. F. Leslie and B. A. Summerell. The aim of this paper was to illustrate the approach of speech and language asssessment developed within the Interschool Speech Therapy Centers in Romania (Centrele Logopedice Interșcolare), at the beginning of the school year, in a pandemic context. It presents the initial evaluation of students and preschoolers, but also the way in which the complex evaluation of children identified with speech and language disorders is developed, fallowing the legislation and specific methodology. The Speech and Language Evaluation Scale is a very useful tool at this stage and beyond. This helps to condense the relevant data about children, to formulate the speech therapy diagnosis and to outline the therapeutic approach. The developed model addresses both aspects of psychomotor development and aspects of pronunciation and articulation. It is designed mainly for primary school students, but can also be applied to preschoolers. The presented case study is intended to highlight the way this model can be used, at various stages, in a specific intervention strategy.</div> <strong>Keywords: hearing impairments, coarticulatory process, language assessment, teaching aid, intelligibility of speech

Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to investigate whether adding condensed tannins (T) to the diet of sheep increases ovulation rate (OR). In all, 281 mature Polwarth ewes (49.9 ± 6.0 kg and body condition score (BCS) of 2.02 ± 0.24 units) were heat-synchronised (oestrus = Day 1) and sorted in the following four treatment diets: (1) native pasture alone (82.6 g of CP and 8.4 MJ metabolisable energy (ME)/kg DM) (NP; n = 70); (2) native pasture (NP) plus a supplement of 0.45 kg of soybean meal (S) from Day 10 to Day 14 (NP+S; n = 71); (3) NP plus a supplement of 0.45 kg S and 25 g of T, to get an estimated concentration of T in the diet of 1.5% (NP+S+1.5T; n = 69); and (4) NP plus a supplement of 0.45 kg S and 42 g of T, to get a concentration of T of 2.5% (NP+S+2.5T; n = 71). OR was measured 8 days after the second heat by rectal ultrasound (Day 25). The estimated consumption of crude protein (CP) during the supplementation period was 129, 261, 237 and 200 g/ewe.day for NP, NP+S, NP+S+1.5T and NP+S+2.5T ewes, respectively. NP+S+1.5T ewes had an OR of 1.90, which was higher (P < 0.05) than those for NP+S+2.5T and NP+S ewes (1.68 and 1.70, respectively). All supplemented ewes had a higher OR than did NP ewes (1.48, P < 0.05). Although NP+S+1.5T ewes ate less protein than did NP+S ewes, their OR was higher, as a result of a more effective use of the protein. The higher concentrations of 2.5% T in the diet might have not evoked a response in OR.

Abstract:
Chromosomes condense during mitosis in most eukaryotes. This transformation involves rearrangements at the nucleosome level and has consequences for transcription. Here, we use cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) to determine the 3D arrangement of nuclear macromolecular complexes, including nucleosomes, in frozen-hydrated Schizosaccharomyces pombe cells. Using 3D classification analysis, we did not find evidence that nucleosomes resembling the crystal structure are abundant. This observation and those from other groups support the notion that a subset of fission yeast nucleosomes may be partially unwrapped in vivo. In both interphase and mitotic cells, there is also no evidence of monolithic structures the size of Hi-C domains. The chromatin is mingled with two features: pockets, which are positions free of macromolecular complexes; and “megacomplexes,” which are multimegadalton globular complexes like preribosomes. Mitotic chromatin is more crowded than interphase chromatin in subtle ways. Nearest-neighbor distance analyses show that mitotic chromatin is more compacted at the oligonucleosome than the dinucleosome level. Like interphase, mitotic chromosomes contain megacomplexes and pockets. This uneven chromosome condensation helps explain a longstanding enigma of mitosis: a subset of genes is up-regulated.

Abstract:
Polytene chromosomes exhibit intricate higher order chromatin structure that is easily visualized due to their precisely aligned component strands. However, it remains unclear if the same factors determine chromatin organization in polyploid and diploid cells. We have analyzed one such factor, the cell cycle, by studying changes in Drosophila nurse cell chromosomes throughout the 10 to 12 endocycles of oogenesis. We find that nurse cells undergo three distinct types of endocycle whose parameters are correlated with chromosome behavior. The first four endocycles support complete DNA replication; poorly banded polytene euchromatin progressively condenses during the late S phases to produce blob-like chromosomes. During the unique fifth endocycle, an incomplete late S phase is followed by a mitosis-like state during which the 64C chromosomes dissociate into 32 chromatid pairs held together by unreplicated regions. All the subsequent endocycles lack any late S phase; during these cycles a new polytene chromosome grows from each 2C chromatid pair to generate 32-ploid polytene nuclei. These observations suggest that euchromatin begins to condense during late S phase and that nurse cell polytene chromosome structure is controlled by regulating whether events characteristic of late S and M phase are incorporated or skipped within a given endocycle.

Abstract:
Individual particles from the fine fraction of samples of entrained ash from a coal-burning power plant were analyzed using an automated scanning electron microscope with an energydispersive x-ray spectrometer. The particles were of concern as a probable cause of high levels of opacity in the plant emissions. Both the mass loading and the number size distribution of fine particles peak in the size range of 0.4 to 0.8 μm diameter. Most of the fine particles are Na-, S-, P-, or Cl-rich. The coal is likely to be the major source for these particles. Minerals and organically-associated metals in the coal can remain in the solid phase during combustion, forming ash particles of varied sizes, including those in the submicron range. Elements are also vaporized during combustion, and Na- and S-bearing particles may form when gas-phase Na2SO4 condenses homogeneously in the convective pass of the boiler. Phosphate and chloride particles may also condense homogeneously.

Abstract:
The natural history of the biogenic elements H, C, N, O, P and S in the cosmos is of great interest because it is these elements which comprise all life. Material ejected from stars (or pre-existing in the interstellar medium) is thought to condense into diffuse bodies of gravitationally bound gas and dust called cold interstellar molecular clouds. Current theories predict that within these clouds, at temperatures of 10-100° K, gases (primarily H2O, but including CO, CO2, CH3OH, NH3, and others) condense onto submicron silicate grains to form icy grain mantles. This interstellar ice represents the earliest and most primitive association of the biogenic elements. Within these multicomponent icy mantles, pre-biotic organic compounds are formed during exposure to UV radiation. It is thought that icy planetesimals (such as comets) within our solar system contain some pristine interstellar material, including ices, and may have (during the early bombardment of the solar system, ∼4 Ga) carried this material to Earth.Despite the widespread occurrence of astrophysical ices and their importance to pre-biotic organic evolution, few experimental data exist which address the relevant phase equilibria and possible structural states. A knowledge of the petrology of astrophysical ice analogs will allow scientists to more confidently interpret astronomical IR observations. Furthermore, the development and refinement of procedures for analyzing ices and other materials at cryogenic temperatures is critical to the study of materials returned from the proposed Rosetta comet nucleus and Mars sample return missions.

Abstract:
In this paper, we briefly review our recent studies of the Heisenberg anti-ferromagnet on the Shastry–Sutherland lattice for SrCu2(BO3)2 under magnetic fields. Treating magnetic excitations promoted by the field as Bose particles and using a strong-coupling expansion, we derived an effective Hamiltonian for the magnetic particles. Anisotropic repulsive interactions between particles induce "insulating" states with a stripe spin-density wave structure at magnetization m/msat = 1/3 and with a checkerboard structure at 1/2, and thereby form magnetization plateaux. We also demonstrated how the unique geometry of the Shastry–Sutherland lattice affects dynamical properties and makes a novel type of quintuplet (S = 2) bound states condense for very small magnetization. AbstractThurston introduced $\sigma _d$-invariant laminations (where $\sigma _d(z)$ coincides with $z^d:\mathbb S ^1\to \mathbb S ^1$, $d\ge 2$) and defined wandering $k$-gons as sets ${\mathbf {T}}\subset \mathbb S ^1$ such that $\sigma _d^n({\mathbf {T}})$ consists of $k\ge 3$ distinct points for all $n\ge 0$ and the convex hulls of all the sets $\sigma _d^n({\mathbf {T}})$ in the plane are pairwise disjoint. He proved that $\sigma _2$ has no wandering $k$-gons. Call a lamination with wandering $k$-gons a WT-lamination. In a recent paper, it was shown that uncountably many cubic WT-laminations, with pairwise non-conjugate induced maps on the corresponding quotient spaces $J$, are realizable as cubic polynomials on their (locally connected) Julia sets. Here we use a new approach to construct cubic WT-laminations with the above properties so that any wandering branch point of $J$ has a dense orbit in each subarc of $J$ (we call such orbits condense), and show that critical portraits corresponding to such laminations are dense in the space ${\mathcal A}_3$of all cubic critical portraits.

Abstract:
Size-controlled polymer nanodomes (PNDs) benefit a broad cross-section of existing and emerging technologies. Condensed droplet polymerization (CDP) is a vacuum-based synthesis technology that produces PNDs from monomer precursors in a single step. However, the effect of synthesis and processing conditions on the PND size distribution remains elusive. Towards size distribution control, we report the effect of substrate temperature, on which monomer droplets condense, on the size distribution of PNDs. We take a reductionist approach and operate the CDP under batch mode to match the conditions commonly used in condensation research. Notably, despite the rich knowledge base in dropwise condensation, the behavior of nonpolar liquids like a common monomer, i.e., 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), is not well understood. We bridge that gap by demonstrating that dropwise condensation of HEMA follows a two-stage growth process. Early-stage growth is dominated by drop nucleation and growth, giving rise to relatively uniform sizes with a lognormal distribution, whereas late-stage growth is dominated by the combined effect of drop coalescence and renucleation, leading to a bimodal size distribution. This new framework for understanding the PND size distribution enables an unprecedented population of PNDs. Their controlled size distribution has the potential to enable programmable properties for emergent materials.

Abstract:
Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable resource used to produce energy, fuels, and chemicals. This study aimed to determine the effect of pyrolysis temperature on product yield and product characterization of bio-oil. In this study, palm shells were selected and prepared as raw materials for bio-oil production. Palm shells were first soaked in 10% HCl and then pyrolyzed at temperatures of 300 oC, 350 oC, 400 oC, and 450 oC in a fixed bed reactor. Afterward, the reactor will emit smoke which later will condense into bio-oil. The experimental results show that a temperature of 450 oC will be a better choice for higher bio-oil yields (44.59%). The characteristics of the bio-oil obtained are density (905 – 1015.17 kg/m3), Kinematic Viscosity (1.21 – 1.5 mm2/s), and flash point (60 – 68.7 oC).

Abstract:
The constant metrification of the humanities, following the example of the natural sciences, places ever higher demands on the evaluation of scientific work. The importance of research in museum activities is declining in parallel with the shrinking territorial importance and scope of the museum. “District” museums are primarily intended to document the past and present life of the catchment region in its totality and therefore have less opportunity to develop the narrow specialization that is a desirable prerequisite for valuable research. This fact primarily condemns district museums to the role of information databanks that provide a sophisticated service to academia, which exacerbates the whole problem by the fact that the results of their work are not ambitious and cannot be published at the museum level, frustrating them completely outside it.

Abstract:
A central question in iron-based superconductivity is the mechanism by which the paired electrons minimize their strong mutual Coulomb repulsion. In most unconventional superconductors, Coulomb repulsion is minimized through the formation of higher angular momentum Cooper pairs, with Fermi surface nodes in the pair wavefunction. The apparent absence of such nodes in the iron-based superconductors has led to a belief they form an s-wave (s±) singlet state, which changes sign between the electron and hole pockets. However, the multiorbital nature of these systems opens an alternative possibility. Here, we propose a new class of s± state containing a condensate of d-wave Cooper pairs, concealed by their entanglement with the iron orbitals. By combining the d-wave (L=2) motion of the pairs with the internal angular momenta I=2 of the iron orbitals to make a singlet (J=L+I=0), an s± superconductor with a nontrivial topology is formed. This scenario allows us to understand the development of octet nodes in potassium-doped Ba1−x KXFe2As2 as a reconfiguration of the orbital and internal angular momentum into a high spin (J=L+I=4) state; the reverse transition under pressure into a fully gapped state can then be interpreted as a return to the low-spin singlet. The formation of orbitally entangled pairs is predicted to give rise to a shift in the orbital content at the Fermi surface, which can be tested via laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
