DeJonge, Michael P. The Directly Political Word of the Church. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198824176.003.0008.

Abstract:
This chapter continues the examination of Bonhoeffer’s first phase of resistance through exposition of “The Church and the Jewish Question,” presenting the second kind of word-resistance, the directly political word of the church (type 4). It is this type of resistance that Bonhoeffer describes as “jam[ming] a spoke in the wheel itself” or “seiz[ing] the wheel itself.” The necessity for this directly political word arises when the state “unscrupulously” governs with “too little” or “too much” order. The logic of this word is best captured by what Bonhoeffer elsewhere calls a concrete commandment. This is the church’s temporary intervention into the political exercise of the law, which under normal conditions would fall under the authority of the properly functioning state.

Abstract:
The premise of the book is that building and construction practices are insensitive to the needs of many people, and implicated in the widespread despoliation and degradation of ecological systems and the environment. From the construction of transport networks and major commercial and residential property in rapidly urbanising countries, to the popularisation of self-build and home improvements, we are living in a period of incessant and unprecedented building. Few places are untouched by construction and infrastructure projects that are part of an ideology of building that has little regard to what is needed and, instead, are shaped by political and economic values that regard building and construction as ‘a good thing’. Using examples from around the world, the book identifies the mentalities of construction and building that are failing people and places in many different ways, and calls for radical changes to city living and environments by building less, but better.

Abstract:
Flowers through Concrete: Explorations in Soviet Hippieland does what the title promises. It takes readers on a journey into a world few knew existed: the lives and thoughts of Soviet hippies, who in the face of disapproval and repression created a version of Western counterculture, skilfully adapting, manipulating, and shaping it to their late socialist environment. This book is a quasi-guide into the underground hippieland, situating the world of hippies firmly in late Soviet reality and offering an unusual history of the last Soviet decades as well as a case study in the power of transnational youth cultures. It tells the almost forgotten story of how in the late sixties hippie communities sprang up across the Soviet Union, often under the tutelage of a few rebellious youngsters coming from privileged households at the heart of the Soviet establishment. Flowers through Concrete recounts not only a compelling story of survival against the odds—hippies were harassed by police, shorn of their hair by civilian guards, and confined in psychiatric hospitals by doctors who believed nonconformism was a symptom of schizophrenia. It also advances a surprising argument: despite obvious antagonism the land of Soviet hippies and the world of late socialism were not incompatible. Indeed, Soviet hippies and late socialist reality meshed so well that the hostile, yet stable, relationship that emerged was in many ways symbiotic. Ultimately, it was not the KGB but the arrival of capitalism in the 1990s that ended the Soviet hippie sistema.
