Leung, Chun-yu Cliff, and 梁鎮宇. "Performance of in-situ concrete stitches in precast concrete segmentalbridges." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B49617758.

Full text
Abstract:
Multi-span precast concrete segmental bridges are commonly constructed using the balanced cantilever method, which essentially involves sequentially extending precast segments outwards from each pier in a balanced manner. A gap of 100 to 200 mm wide is usually provided around the mid-span location between the last two approaching segments to facilitate erection. In-situ concrete is then cast to ‘stitch’ the segments together, thus making the bridge deck continuous. In the current practice, the in-situ concrete stitches are usually designed to be capable of sustaining considerable sagging moment but only minimal hogging moment. Failure of stitches may occur under exceptional circumstances that may potentially trigger a progressive collapse. However, relatively little research in this area has been carried out. In view of this, the author is motivated to undertake an extensive study of the behaviour of in-situ concrete stitches and the effects of their performance on the robustness of typical segmental bridges. Experimental study is carried out to examine the behaviour of in-situ stitches under different combinations of internal forces. Series of stitch specimens of different configurations are tested. Subsequent parametric studies are conducted numerically to examine the effects of various parameters on the load-displacement characteristics of the stitches. Formulae for strength estimation are proposed based on the results. A study of robustness involves analyzing the collapse behaviour of a structure in an extreme event and the analysis should be carried out up to and then well beyond the state of peak strength of structural members. A finite element programme for post-peak analysis is therefore developed for the present study. As the ability of a member section to sustain large inelastic deformation can ultimately affect the robustness of a structure, an investigation is conducted to examine the effects of steel content, yield strength and prestressing level on the ductility and deformability of prestressed concrete sections. Using the programme developed, the formation of collapsing mechanisms of a multi-span segmental bridge deck in an extreme event is examined. A typical bridge deck is subject to prescribed accidental load on its span in order to analyze the sequence of failure. Substantial redistribution of internal forces along the deck is observed as failures initiate, thus causing subsequent failures of other deck sections even though they have been designed to resist the internal forces at the ultimate limit state. The results indicate that any span of a multispan bridge may become a temporary end-span in the event of collapse of an adjacent span and the strength of the sections must be designed accordingly to prevent progressive failure. As a span becomes a temporary end-span, the in-situ concrete stitches may experience substantial moment and shear, and their failure could potentially trigger progressive collapse of the entire bridge deck. Towards the end of the thesis, important design considerations that can enhance the performance of in-situ concrete stitches and robustness of precast concrete segmental bridges are presented.

Mola, Elena. "Criteria for the seismic vulnerability reduction of existing irregular reinforced concrete structures." Grenoble INPG, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007INPG0019.

Abstract:
The research is a contribution to the development of tools and criteria for the seismic assessment and retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete structures, in particular plan-wise irregular ones. Ln fact, the 'capacity design' method, based on the rationale of the equal displacernent rule and the central role of ductility, and usually employed for the design of new structures, does not automatically extend to existing irregular structures. The work is thoroughly based on a large scale experimental activity carried out in the framework of the EC-funded project SPEAR (Seismic Performance Assessment and Rehabilitation) and consisting of a series of pseudodynamic tests on a full-size plan-wise irregular three storey frame structure, bath in the as-built and in two different retrofitted configurations. Based on the experimental data, the research attempted at first at clarifying the basic features of the seismic response of such structures ; following to that, the proposed criteria for the reduction of their seismic vulnerability and for the design of effective rehabilitation interventions were presented. To this end, the experimental approach was complemented by the numerical one, with the creation of a numerical model into a finite element structural analysis software and the application of the Karhunen-Loeve nonlinear modal analysis method

The steel fiber reinforcement concrete is a composite material. The concrete is the matrix and the reinforcement are fibers. In Brazil, it started to be used in the decade of 90, and nowadays its one of the most efficient solution for industrial floors, witch are very important structures because the whole production consists on it. A problem with these kind of floors is that it creates financial damages in the occurrence of interruption of industrial activities. Some fibers had been studied as an addition to the concrete, mostly the steel ones. The main types of concrete floors had been boarded, with emphasis on the reinforced with steel fiber, looking for its characteristics, interactions fiber x matrix, efficiency parameters, quality control, main pathologies and therapies, as well as existent loads and dimensions. It was concluded that the fiber steel performance has an important role in the control of propagation of the cracks, increasing the residual strength factors, even being able to increase the capacity of the structure, depending on the volume of fiber steel that is applied.

Jang, Se Hoon. "Automated crack control analysis for concrete pavement construction." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2553.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this research is on the control of random cracking in concrete paving by using sawcut notch locations in the early stages of construction. This is a major concern in concrete pavement construction. This research also addresses a probabilistic approach to determine the optimum time and depth of sawcutting for newly constructed portland cement concrete pavements. Variability in climate conditions and material characteristics during the hardening process affects the potential of cracking at any sawcut depth. Several factors affecting the probability of crack initiation are material strength parameters, method and quality of curing, slab/subbase stiffness, the amount and depth of steel reinforcement, friction between the slab and the subbase, and concrete shrinkage. Other factors relevant to concrete mixture characteristics such as cement content and type of coarse aggregate affect development of early aged stresses caused by shrinkage and thermally induced contraction. A probabilistic analysis of the factors that affect crack control using sawcut notches is presented in relation to different weather conditions (concrete placement temperature) at the time of construction, and concrete mixture characteristics such as fly ash replacement (FA) and cement factor (CF). Both of these significantly affect sawcut timing and depth requirement. The determination of crack initiation is based on fracture mechanics. Estimation of the time of cracking is based on predicted tensile strength and stress in the concrete at the bottom of the sawcut notch to assess the feasibility of crack control in the early stages of construction.

Abstract:
Self-compacting concrete (SCC) can flow into place and compact under its own weight into a uniform void free mass even in areas of congested reinforcement. The research reported in this thesis examined the production of SCC with readily available UK materials, with the overall aims of evaluating test methods and establishing a suitable mix design procedure. There have been significant recent developments and applications of SCC in several countries, notably Japan. A literature survey gave an understanding of the advantages and properties of SCC, test methods and the range of constituent materials and their relative proportions for its successful production. A range of SCC mixes can be produced with the common features of a lower aggregate content than conventional concrete and the use of superplasticizers. Most mixes also contained one or more of pulverized fuel ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and an inert powder filler. A four stage experimental programme was carried out: *tests on pastes to assess the effect of the types and proportions of the powders and superplasticizers on the rheology. *tests on mortars to determine suitable dosage of superplasticizers for high fluidity, low segregation and low loss of workability with time after mixing. Flow spread and funnel tests were used. *tests on fresh concrete to enable suitable types and quantities of coarse aggregate to be combined with these mortars to produce SCC. Fluidity and viscosity were measured using slump flow and V-funnel tests, and passing ability using L- and U-type tests. Two-point workability tests were also carried out, and a novel way of assessing segregation resistance was developed. *tests on hardened concrete to determine compressive strength, bond to reinforcement and drying shrinkage. A mix design procedure, based on a method suggested by Japanese workers, has been developed. This includes optimisation of the mix with a linear optimisation tool from a commercial spreadsheet package.

Heritage, Ian. "Direct electric curing of mortar and concrete." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2001. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/6571.

Full text
Abstract:
Direct electric curing is the method by which the hydration reactions within concrete are thermally accelerated by passing an alternating electric current through the sample. This use of electricity as a means of supplying heat to young concrete and mortar has become recognised as a more effective and energy efficient form of accelerating the curing process than traditional steam curing. The present investigation involves studying the affects of thermally accelerated curing of cementitious materials in comparison to normally non-heated curing. Prior to mixing, tests are performed on the constituents of the cementitious mixes. Results of these tests are used in the creation of mix designs for mortar and concrete samples. A range of concrete mixes are designed with and without additives and admixtures are used to make cubes, slabs and beams. From the testing results, the factors affecting the short and long term properties of electrically cured cementitious materials are investigated and heating regimes are presented to achieve specific properties of both strength and durability at specific ages. A substantial section of reinforced concrete is required to gain representative results in electrically curing reinforced concrete slabs. Compressive strength is difficult to measure due to the electrical distortion affects of inserts and the damage caused by coring so that at present, basic maturity concepts are used as a compressive strength guide which limits the validity of results obtained. This research looks at refining these concepts to include early age heating effects induced by direct electric curing. The microstructural development of concrete when subjected to accelerated curing is also considered. The affect of delay periods and maximum temperature is studied using a scanning electron microscope and the results presented.

Concrete is a versatile building material that is used in virtually all construction industries. The most common use of concrete for the manufacture of enclosures and load-bearing structures in civil and industrial construction. Monolithic construction of homes is becoming more widely used. Concrete is used for architectural expressiveness of buildings, elements of small and landscape architecture with the use of white and colored cements, decorative fillers and various surface treatments. Concretes are widely used in road and airfield construction. But there are drawbacks to the material: metal reinforcement creates electric fields inside the concrete that have a bad effect on human health; concrete production pollutes the atmosphere; early crack formation in the elongated and rapid opening; great weight. This encourages professionals to look for other materials that could replace concrete in various aspects of construction.

Wang, Lu, and 王璐. "Post-compressed plates for strengthening preloaded reinforced concretecolumns." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B50162664.

Full text
Abstract:
Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are the primary load-bearing structural components in buildings. Over time these columns may need to be repaired or strengthened either due to defective construction, having higher loads than those foreseen in the initial design of the structure, or as a result of material deterioration or accidental damage. Three external strengthening methods, namely steel jacketing, concrete jacketing and composite jacketing, are commonly adopted for upgrading the ultimate load capacity of RC columns. Among these strengthening techniques for RC columns, steel jacketing, which is easy to construct, less prone to debonding and has better fire resistance than bonded plates, has been proven to be an effective retrofitting scheme and is the most commonly used. Different methods for strengthening existing RC columns have been proposed in the literature. However, no matter which jacket is used to strengthen RC columns, the adverse effects of pre-existing loads on stress-lagging between the concrete core and the new jacket have yet to be solved. In order to deal with this problem, a new postcompression approach was proposed for strengthening preloaded RC columns. In this approach, the slightly precambered steel plates were used. The advantages of this ‘post-compressed plates’ (PCP) strengthening technique are that both the strength and deformability of existing columns can be enhanced and the design life of old buildings can be prolonged. Due to the aforementioned advantages, the PCP strengthening technique was investigated in this study. To begin with, axial compression tests of the PCP strengthened columns were conducted. The overall response, in particular the internal force distribution between concrete and steel plates was obtained. It was observed that the plate thickness and preloading level had dominant effects on the behaviour of PCP strengthened columns. Subsequently, eccentric compression tests of PCP strengthened columns were undertaken. The behaviour of PCP strengthened columns was mainly affected by the degree of eccentricity and plate thickness. Placing flat and precambered steel plates on the tension and compression sides respectively of the RC columns and using post-compression method on the compression side can significantly improve the ultimate load capacity of RC columns under large eccentricity; while placing precambered steel plates on the side faces of the RC columns can significantly improve the ultimate load capacity of RC columns under small eccentricity. Finally, axial compression tests of PCP repaired fire-exposed columns were carried out. The ultimate load capacity of fire-exposed columns can be restored up to 72% of original level by using this post-compression approach. The corresponding theoretical models were also developed to predict the ultimate load capacity of PCP strengthened columns. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results showed that the theoretical models accurately predicted the load-carrying capacities of PCP strengthened columns. According to the experimental and theoretical results, a unified design procedure for the PCP strengthened columns was proposed to aid engineers in designing this new type of PCP strengthened columns and to ensure proper column detailing for desirable performance. The design procedure was validated by the available experimental and theoretical results.

Elimov, Radoslav. "The control of concrete quality during slipforming operations." Thèse, Université de Sherbrooke, 2003. http://savoirs.usherbrooke.ca/handle/11143/1751.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to study, investigate and introduce new methods for testing and monitoring slipformed concrete and produce a numerical model to simulate the thermal behavior of the concrete during a slipforming operation. The goal is to make the slipforming technique more efficient and economical and therefore potentially more attractive to the construction industry. The attempt is to bring the slipforming operation from an area of experience and empirical science, closer to an area of scientific concrete technology. Of special interest is the monitoring and controlling of the slipform at the time the concrete is filling the form. The time at which the concrete is exposed below the forms must correspond to the concrete initial setting time. An experimental program was performed to obtain the best possible means to control the hardening of the slipformed concrete at an early age. The suitability and the validity of various methods for monitoring and testing the slipformed concrete were evaluated. The most suitable methods for slipforming concrete monitoring are the ones based on the monitoring of the setting time of the concrete. The testing of the development of compressive strength, and static and dynamic modulus did not prove to be practical. The"Rod Test" was confirmed to be a practical method. The ASTM C403 method can be used under controlled curing conditions on the mortar separated from the concrete for testing purposes. The"2[degree Celcius] temperature increase" method was confirmed to be accurate enough for the majority of the ambient temperatures experienced in Canada. However, measurements done at lower temperatures proved to produce less accurate results, and an appropriate improvement of this method has been proposed. A new proposed method for monitoring and testing of the slipforming concrete based on measurement of the electrical conductivity gave very good results due to the fact that the electrical conductivity of the fresh concrete significantly changes as hydration process develops. Electrical conductivity decreases drastically after the precipitation of portlandite. The drop in the electrical conductivity in the mixture or the break in the slope of the conductivity vs. time curves, are clearly visible."--Résumé abrégé par UMI.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to evolve how to reduce the manifestation of poor decisions that always produce defects and rework. The purpose of the study is predicated on the fact that good decision-making is a fundamental element of improved project delivery in the construction industry. Such decisions determine the accomplishment of performance parameters in each project. However, suboptimal performance, which is pervasive in the construction industry, is often linked to team decisions. To remedy decision-making pitfalls, the concept of Choosing by Advantages (CBA) is promoted by lean construction researchers. CBA is a decision-making system that assists project parties in deciding a course of action among competing alternatives. Case study research design was used for this project to discover the decision-making process adopted by project teams. The results from the study achieved through cross-case analysis shows that concrete defects and rework is often caused by the project team’s decision-making process, which is influenced by the members of the project team because of lack of experience, poor working conditions, and lack of education. The results also show that the decision-making mechanism of the project teams is influenced by the construction method, specification, cost, quality and time. The outcome of the project team’s decision-making process when choosing a concrete type often causes the concrete defects and rework, which can be eliminated through the application of CBA when choosing a concrete type. The application of CBA when choosing concrete type from two alternatives, ready mixed concrete and site batched concrete is driven by the project team. It was discovered from all three cases that ready-mixed concrete had a better score than site-batched concrete when using CBA to compare these two alternatives. The results show that ready-mixed concrete had less chances of causing concrete defects and rework when used or applied per the correct specifications or methods which are detailed in the engineering drawings of the structure. The study proposes that the project team should adopt CBA to improve their decision-making process on site especially when working with concrete.

Abstract:
The present research work to choose the degree in Civil Engineering, with emphasis in the construction branch, had the purpose of evaluating and comparing the behavior of concrete with different proportions of substitution of natural coarse aggregate (AN) by aggregates of recycled concrete (ACR ) in order to obtain a concrete design that allows the reduction and use of natural aggregates, and thus reduce the depredation of quarries. The behavior was evaluated by analyzing the mechanical properties and durability of the types of mixtures made with the objective of obtaining an optimal substitution ratio of AN by ACR so that the properties are within the parameters indicated by the standards. On the other hand, a model of a contributed structure was made to make an Environmental Impact Assessment by using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology in the Athena program and, subsequently, the results obtained in said program were compared.
