Full textThe aim of this work is to study the stiffness effect of wall columns on structural behavior of reinforced concrete buildings subjected to seismic action. The premises of the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR14521:2006 were considered, which presents criteria for earthquake resistant design of structures. The linear analysis employed the methods of the Brazilian standard - equivalent static load method, response spectrum analysis and time history method - were applied to buildings with two types of structural systems, namely concrete frame and dual system concrete frame and wall columns. The results were analyzed in edge frames structures in the longitudinal and transverse directions, comparing the displacement of each floor and shear, bending moment and axial forces on the bases of the columns. A comparison was made between the three methods applied and the structural systems analyzed.

Full textThe present work shows a comparison between results of the structural analysis of a cellular box cross section viaduct superstructure, the results are obtained with analytic simplified methods and with the finite element method using a suitable software, aiming the validation of the methods used for constructions in cellular box cross section, observing the criteria of time, cost and satisfactory results. The stress transversal distribution coefficients for the superstructure of a box cross section viaduct were analyzed for the expansion of the construction with the use of box cross section with different dimensions from the original one and with no symmetry, regarding the expansion only for one side of the construction. Such determination presents a huge importance, once the knowledge of the transversal distributions among the stringer beams that comprise the construction allows the elaboration of more accurate bridge widening designs, searching for the best approximation between the numerical models and the real behavior of the structure. The results showed that the three-dimensional models are those that are closer to the real condition of the structure, but with high level of complexity for development and a high demand of time. The grid model and the model based on the Fauchart’s theory show different results of the three-dimensional models, proving to be conservative and with inaccurate answers, not being indicated for the analysis of box cross section structures. On the other hand, the Mason’s Method showed good results, with values close to the ones of the three-dimensional models, however with a shorter time of development and delivery of results, featuring an efficient method for box cross section artworks widening studies, when analyzing the criteria of cost, time and results.

Full textDurability and impermeability in a water-retaining structure are of prime importance if the structure is to fulfill its function over its design life. In addition, serviceability cracking tends to govern the design of water retaining structures. This research concentrates on load-induced cracking specifically that due to pure bending and to direct tension in South African reinforced concrete water retaining structures (WRS). As a South African design code for WRS does not exist at present, South African designers tend to use the British codes in the design of reinforced concrete water-retaining structures. However, with the release of the Eurocodes, the British codes have been withdrawn, creating the need for a South African code of practice for water-retaining structures. In updating the South African structural design codes, there is a move towards adopting the Eurocodes so that the South African design codes are compatible with their Eurocode counterparts. The Eurocode crack model to EN1992 (2004) was examined and compared to the corresponding British standard, BS8007 (1989). A reliability study was undertaken as the performance of the EN1992 crack model applied to South African conditions is not known. The issues of the influence of the crack width limit and model uncertainty were identified as being of importance in the reliability crack model.

Full textAdditive Manufacturing (3D printing) consists in building an object layer by layer following a 3D model. For this purpose an appropriate material, machine and model are needed. From Construction industry point of view, 3D printing is considered as a new building method. Since 2010, the use of 3D printing for construction has known a large evolution. More and more real construction projects are using this new technology. Some of these examples are Winsun in China, D-Shape in Italy, Contour Crafting in California or Apis Cor in Russia…etc. The work presented in this manuscript was conducted through an industrial PhD thesis (CIFRE) which was launched between “Ecole Centrale de Lille” and “Bouygues Construction” in 2015. The objective of this work was to study the potential of large scale 3D printing integration in the construction process and more precisely the development of a printable cement based mix design. The work is organized in three main parts. The first part was dedicated to 3D printing and cement based material as general concepts. Then their interactions were analyzed. The second part was devoted to the printable mix design. The printability was defined using three indicators: Extrudability, Buildability and layers adhesion. The third part was dedicated to check the printability of the proposed mix design. This work may be considered as a first approach to define a laboratory scale methodology for cement based materials printability testing. It is also a step to contribute to the development of construction 3D printers

Full textThe preservation of natural resources and the limitation of CO2 emissions are a contribution to sustainable development. In the context of the concrete design, this contribution consists in using local or recycled aggregates. However, local or recycled aggregates can be porous and of low quality. The scientific community agrees that the intrinsic porosity of aggregates changes the transport properties of concrete, but to what extent is still a question. The objective of the thesis is to analyze the impact of intrinsic coarse aggregate porosity on mainly the durability properties of concrete. In a preliminary understanding and with a view to accentuating phenomena occurring in the concrete, an experimental program is designed for elementary model (EM), which is composed of paste and gravel. The impact of the aggregate nature (porous and non-porous), moisture state and volume together with the binder nature, is analyzed on i) the water porosity of EM, ii) the structuration of the paste-aggregate interface. Next, at concrete scale, materials were designed with the same skeleton of aggregates (same sand) and the same equivalent binder content. The designs varied by the aggregate nature, moisture state, the binder nature, the variation of water/cement ratio and the incorporation of chemical admixtures (plasticizer or superplasticizer). The impact of coarse aggregate porosity on properties in the fresh state (slump, apparent density and entrapped air content) and in the hardened state (compressive strength, water porosity, water absorption, gas permeability, chloride migration, accelerated carbonation and Portlandite content) was studied. The main results show that the moisture state of aggregate and the binder nature are the first factors that condition the structuring of the paste/aggregate interface within the elementary model. The necessity to use porous aggregates in saturated surface dry is particularly highlighted. At the scale of concrete, the properties in the fresh state are influenced by the aggregate porosity and the water/binder (W/B) ratio. However, for a fixed W/B ratio corresponding to fluid consistency, the variations in the fresh properties measured when porous aggregates are incorporated do not depend on the binder nature. In hardened concrete, porosity of aggregate plays an important role in water porosity and air permeability of concrete whatever the nature of binder. For other durability properties (water absorption, Clo migration, carbonation and compressive strength), the nature of binder overcome leading in comparison to the porosity of aggregate

Full textTimber - concrete composite structures are competitive technical solutions for new building construction as well as in refurbishment. This work aims at promoting timber - concrete construction in France thanks to a better knowledge of mechanical and thermo-mechanical behavior of the fasteners. Regarding more traditional buildings systems, few researches were lead about seismic and fire design of timber concrete structures. Particular emphasis is put on those two points in this study through experimental, analytical and numerical approaches. As a matter of fact, several experimental campaigns were lead. 24 Push Out tests have been carried out at ambient temperature on the SBB timber-concrete composite system. The test program involved 12 Push Out tests under cyclic loading and 12 Push Out tests under monotonic loading. Experimental results brought to light the good mechanical performances as well as the large ductility reserve of SBB timber-concrete connection system. The cyclic tests have revealed the system ability to dissipate energy and allowed quantifying the loss of rigidity and resistance of the system. Descriptive models (Foschi, Dolan, Richard) have been adapted to reproduce to the experimental load-slip curves. In order to get further insight into the local phenomenon taking place between timber and the SBB connector, a second test program was devised. The tests involved 16 Pull Out tests (connector from timber) and 3 series of 16 embedment tests og various parts of the connector in glue laminated timber. Thanks to these experimental results, a better understanding of the SBB behavior has been reached. Predictive models are provided for numerical and analytical modeling of timber - concrete fasteners. Those models show good agreement with the Push Out tests introduced in previous part.In order to assess the fire behavior of timber - concrete composite floor system with the SBB connection system, fire tests were conducted according to ISO 834 standard. Fire results database with SBB timber - concrete connection includes a full-scale fire floor test (floor dimensions are 5.35m x 3.5m) and several fire Push Out tests based on three different timber - concrete composite beam sections. Fire Push Out tests were heavily instrumented with thermocouples in order to allow the validation of thermal models developed in this thesis.Thermal and thermomechanical coupled simulations were conducted with finite element software Abaqus©. These models demonstrate the good performances of timber-concrete composite structures subjected to fire. Heating of the elements and loss in shear resistance and stiffness of the connection system were quantified. Furthermore fire design rules are proposed for timber - concrete structures. Fire behavior analysis pointed out that thermal dilatation of concrete must be considered in fire design of timber-concrete composite structures

Full textFacing the energy problems of the building and the environmental impact, hygroscopic envelopes constitute a very interesting alternative to improve the thermal comfort, the quality of the indoor air, the regulation of the indoor humidity and to reduce the energy consumption. This thesis work aims to study the coupled heat and mass transfers within porous materials such as hemp concrete. The aim is to predict the hygrothermal behaviour of these materials, through a macroscopic model, based on transfer motors; temperature for heat transfer, water vapour pressure for moisture transfer and pressure for air transfer. The difficulty of using this model lies in the identification of the numerous parameters characterizing the hygrothermal properties of the materials. Part of the work has been devoted to the evaluation of the main intrinsic properties of the materials through the elaboration of different experimental prototypes in the laboratory within the framework of an investigation recommended by the RILEM TC-275 HDB committee. Moreover, the variability of the parameters resulting from this last campaign as well as the lack of knowledge of the remaining parameters lead us to a sensitivity analysis of the parameters. This study allowed to identify the most influential parameters on the hygrothermal response of a hemp concrete wall. On this basis, a scale model was deduced according to these last parameters (thermal conductivity, thermal capacity, vapour permeability and storage capacity). This work was implemented using discretization by the finite element method implemented in a Matlab code. Subsequently, an adimensional study was undertaken, which identified the most important parameters in the prediction of the hygrothermal behaviour of a hemp concrete wall. The parameters remaining from this sensitivity study are a determining factor in the distinction between materials that are both thermal insulators and water vapour permeable (water regulators). Finally, a comparison of the results of the reduced model with those of the literature is presented. This comparison highlighted the influence of the sorption isotherm on the hygrothermal behaviour of a hemp concrete wall

Full textIn a context of energy efficiency and durability in the field of building, the understanding of hygrothermal behaviour of building materials, especially hygroscopic ones, is essential. This study aim to understand and model heat and moisture transfers in a multi-layer building wall made of biosourced materials. We focus in particular on hysteretic phenomena observed on sorption isotherms. A one-dimensional numerical model developed with the COMSOL Multiphysics software is used to simulate transient temperature and vapour pressure in three situations. The first one is about the hygrothermal behaviour of materials, highly hygroscopic (hemp concrete) and lowly hygroscopic (lime-based plasters), exposed to several cyclical variations of relative humidity. A good agreement is observed between simulated and measured values of relative humidity, temperature and moisture content. However, results are highly sensitive to hydric properties. Then, a study is performed on an instrumented hemp-concrete wall built in a bi-climatic chamber and exposed to simultaneous temperature and relative humidity variations. The confrontation between measured and simulated values shows the importance of initial moisture content

Full textHemp concrete is a bio-based construction material able to meet current sustainable issues. Used as filling and insulating material, it has the capacity to regulate the indoor relative humidity. Its complex hygrothermal behavior results on interdependent thermal and hydric performances. The prediction of the hygrothermal effect is performed through heat and moisture transfer modeling and simulation. However, the use of representative inputs is necessary. Standard characterization methods have often been developed for usual building material and can show some limitations in the case of bio-based material. The main objective of these works is to determine the hygrothermal properties of a precast hemp concrete produced at industrial scale, have a better understanding of this characterization and describe its hygrothermal behavior through numerical simulations. The studied material is based on pozzolanic binder and hemp aggregates. One part of this work deals with the characterization of the physical, thermal and hydric properties of the studied material and with the measurement methods. For each hygrothermal properties, several methods have been confronted. If possible, the temperature and humidity influences have been appraised. A heat and moisture transfer model is proposed with a scale analysis based on hemp concrete properties from the literature. This model has been applied to wall scale experiments highlighting the impact of sorption and phase change phenomena on the heat transfers. With regards to the thermal properties, the experimental study at material scale highlights the significant impact of the experimental protocol on the result of the measure, particularly for the specific heat capacity. For hydric properties, the studies put forward the interest of performing a parametric round-robin test dedicated to bio-based materials. An air permeability measurement protocol designed for regular concrete has been adapted in order to evaluate the performance of a very permeable material such as the hemp concrete. The numerical model is validated on a test from a standard and a test from the literature. It manages to describe test with usual ambient solicitations performed in the bi-climatic chamber

Full textAs part of the periodic reassessments of the seismic safety of nuclear installations, EDF has to characterize the behavior of the structures of reinforced concrete nuclear buildings and the equipment they support. Engineering studies are based on finite element numerical simulation. To improve the capabilities of these calculations, EDF launched a research program on the experimental characterization and numerical modeling of the reinforced concrete structures wall-slab connections under seismic loading conditions. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to refine the calculations of the earthquake spectra transmitted to the equipment supported on the floors, on the other hand, to refine the robustness assessments in the areas around the connections (transmitted forces, reinforcement requirements). The experimental campaign includes a series of two times two reduced-scale reinforced concrete mock-ups, subjected to quasi-static and dynamic cyclic loading by means of the CEA's Azalée vibrating table, in out-of-plane bending and in shear in the slab plane. As already existing in the literature for column-beam junctions, a model of the connection compatible with a plate or shell finite element model of the building is proposed. Its objective is to idealize the specific contribution of the connection in terms of kinematics, stiffness, redistribution of forces and resistance. The contributions of this model are then evaluated based on the results of several experimental campaigns, in particular the test campaign cited above, but also previous campaigns on the dynamic behavior of slabs in nuclear structures. The feasibility of applying the model to an industrial study is also assessed by means of the study of a typical nuclear building. The use of the model made it possible to highlight design margins in terms of reinforcement and floor spectra levels

Full textSteel reinforcement corrosion is the major cause of failure in reinforced concrete structures. This electrochemical process is induced by presence in sufficient quantity of chloride ions at the reinforcement or by concrete carbonation (CO2 action). This thesis aims to develop engineering performance-based models for the service life prediction of reinforced concrete structures subjected to chloride-induced or carbonation-induced corrosion initiation and propagation. It consists in developing three models : a chloride ions ingress model, a carbonation model and a corrosion model that allows to estimate the corrosion initiation time and propagation time. These models consider factors related to the material (i.e. durability indicators), processing, environment and geometry. The approach used to develop these models is based on using several literature databases of ageing structures and concrete testing specimens (BHP-2000, Perfdub, etc.). The use of these data allowed to improve the predictive capacity of existing models (chloride ingress model) and to develop new models (carbonation and corrosion models)

Full textIn numerical applications of reinforced concrete structures, the steel-concrete interface behavior has a vital importance when the cracking properties are investigated. A finite element approach for the steel-concrete interface to be used in large-scale simulations was proposed by (Torre-Casanova, 2013) and (Mang, 2016). It enables to calculate the slip between the steel and concrete in the tangential direction of the interface element representation. The aim is here to improve the initial bond-slip model to be more efficient and more representative. The document is divided into three parts: 1) The existing bond-slip model is evaluated. The bond-slip model is then improved by considering transversal and irreversible bond behaviors under alternative loads. The new bond-slip model is validated with several numerical applications. 2) Confinement effect is implemented in the bond-slip model to capture the effect of external lateral pressure. According to the performed numerical applications, it is demonstrated how the active confinement can play a role, through the steel-concrete bond, during monotonic and cyclic loading cases. 3) Dowel action is finally investigated with the new bond-slip model. Two different experimental campaigns (Push-off tests and four-point bending tests) are reproduced with different reinforcement (1D truss and beam) and interface (new bonds-slip and perfect bond) models. The results show that the proposed simulation strategy including the bond slip model enables to reproduce experimental results by predicting global (force-displacement relation) and local behaviors (crack properties) of the reinforced concrete structures under shear loading better than the perfect bond assumption which is commonly used in the industrial applications
