Abstract:
An individual’s concern for sustainability and an organization’s concern for sustainability are interrelated and is imperative considering the significance of environmental and business sustainability to future organizations. The objective of the research is to understand more about the interrelationship between these two concerns. This relationship is studied under the influence of five demographic variables (Age, gender, employment type, educational qualification and income) and considering the preference for self-interest over common interest. The organization’s concern for sustainability and an individual’s concern for sustainability were found to significantly explain each other. The demographic variables were also found to significantly explain these two concerns. The research is based on a survey instrument and the findings contribute new dimensions to the existing literature on the subject.

Abstract:
IntroductionThe various special concerns and commitments that individuals ordinarily have, for example towards family members, friends, and possibly compatriots, present an interesting challenge for justice. Justice, after all, is said to be blind and imposes demands on persons that ought to be impartial, at least in some respects, to personal ties and relationships. Yet individual special concerns are obviously of moral importance and are deeply valued by participants in these relationships. Thus any conception of justice to be plausible has to be able to accommodate to some extent the various types of valuable and valued special concern characteristic of ordinary social life. In particular, it is important to see how the impartial demands of justice can be maintained while accommodating special concern.

Abstract:
Purpose In today’s digitized environment, information privacy has become a prime concern for everybody. The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of information privacy concern arising because of the application of computer-based information system in the various domains (E-Governance, E-Commerce, E-Health, E-Banking and E-Finance), and at different levels, i.e. individual, group, organizational and societal. Design/methodology/approach The authors performed an in-depth analysis of different research articles related to information privacy concerns and elements affecting those at certain level of applications. The primary sources of literature were articles retrieved from online databases. Various online journal and scholarly articles were searched in detail to locate information privacy-related articles. Findings The authors have carried out a detailed literature review to identify the different levels where the privacy is a big challenging task. This paper provides insights whether information privacy concern may obstruct in the successful dispersal and adoption of different applications in various application domains. Consumers’ attitude towards information privacy concerns have enlightened and addressed at individual levels in numerous domains. Privacy concerns at the individual level, as suggested by our analysis, seem to have been sufficiently addressed or addressed. However, information privacy concerns at other levels – group, organizational and societal levels – need the attention of researchers. Originality/value In this paper, the authors have posited that it will help the researchers to more focus at group level privacy perspective in the information privacy era.

The present research paper, entitled “Concern for Future Generations: Some Perspectives” begins with revisiting a number of ideas related with the future dressed generations from the perspective of Environmental Ethics. One of the scholarly works which I have addressed here: Work by Gregory S.Kavka who has explained the problem of future generations in the essay, “The Paradox of Future Individuals”. Moreover, I have tried to highlight the view points where the scholars been addressed, fundamentally coincide and differ from each other. In the concluding part of the paper I have brought into focus 'the Buddhist theory of kamma and how the actions performed by individuals have an impact on future generations. I have shown how the actions of an individual in the present may address our concerns about the future generations. Does kamma legitimize concern for the future generations?

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates individuals' privacy concerns about commercial actors online, where commercial actors are private organisations that profit through the collection and on-sale of, and/or targeted advertising using, the information individuals disclose online. My purpose is to demonstrate the affect that low privacy concerns for commercial actors can have on individuals’ privacy online, and to establish how and why these low privacy concerns are common among most individuals. I argue that individuals’ online privacy is inadequately protected from commercial actors’ information gathering practices, and that this will remain the case as long individuals do not harbour concerns for commercial actors. My argument is separated into three chapters. In the first chapter I illustrate the inadequate protections individuals have against commercial actors, who employ technologies to implicitly collect individuals’ personal information. In Chapter Two I establish the impact that individuals heightened privacy concerns can have on commercial actors. Cases of this are rare however, as I argue that commercial actors’ use privacy controls and strategic deployment of privacy related changes to successfully lower individuals’ privacy concerns. In Chapter Three I seek to understand why commercial actors’ privacy concern reducing techniques are effective by inspecting a particular online demographic – young adults. I conduct a long answer survey of 25 young adults to complement the scholarly research in the field. I argue that young adults do not harbour privacy concerns for commercial actors as they perceive more immediate privacy threats elsewhere online, specifically those that exist within their online network. I ultimately conclude that individuals’ privacy has inadequate protections against commercial actors, but that any attempt to improve these protections will have to clearly communicate to individuals both the commercial actors’ practices and why their actions justify concern.

Wright, Jessica Ann. "Implications of a Universal Healthcare System in the United States: Why Individual Health Is Now of National Concern." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/49385.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law. This paper explores the implications of these new healthcare policies in the United States, given that a universal healthcare system has already being put in place. More specifically, it explores the question "Does the new 'universal healthcare' system bring with it obligations for citizens participating within the system to be more conscientious about their health and lifestyle choices? And if so, on what grounds?". I argue that individuals have strong social and moral obligations within a universal healthcare system to take the minimal provisions required for staying healthy (eating healthy, exercising, getting vaccinations, smoking cessation, and attending routine "check-ups" in order to not burden others with easily avoidable healthcare costs. These new obligations are grounded in the duty of fair play stemming from the fact that health insurance is a cooperative scheme. Furthermore this paper will show that when a universal healthcare scheme is in place, the healthcare resources become a 'common good' which is susceptible to a collective action problem known as 'the tragedy of the commons', and thus also give recommendations for its solution. The solutions that I endorse, although designed to address the free-rider problem recognized David Winkler, shows that Winkler's solution goes too far by indiscriminately punishing every unhealthy individual within a universal healthcare system.

Russell, Kathleen Sheridan. "Psychosocial concerns and individual anxieties for fathers with testicular cancer." Thesis, University of East London, 2015. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/4592/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the major areas of psychosocial concerns, individual anxieties and coping responses for fathers with testicular cancer. While numerous studies have been carried out with mothers with cancer, research from the perspective of fathers with cancer is sparse. This study attempts to identify and explore their specific concerns and priorities. The study was approved by the Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) Committee for Clinical Research (CCR) and the Local Research Ethics Committee (LREC). Men were recruited from the RMH Testicular Clinic. All of the men had two or three school age children and were from a range of ethnic backgrounds, professions and education levels. The Biographical Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) of interviewing was used and the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method was employed to analyze the data. Psychodynamic concepts were utilized as the theoretical framework to develop interpretations for each participant. Theories of masculinity were also incorporated. A set of themes emerged which was supported by the current literature. The psychosocial concerns included: lack of adequate medical information, concerns for children and wife and work concerns. The individual anxieties included: concerns around self concepts and masculinity, physical changes and self-image, challenges to faith and finding meaning, fear of recurrence, fear of death and annihilation. The participants employed specific coping responses including: intellectualization, minimizing, maintaining stoic façade and idealization which helped them to cope with the impact of their disease AND allowed them to maintain their sense of masculinity. This phenomenon was labeled “The Masculine Way of Handling Illness”. Additionally, the men split their cancer into the “good one to get”. The findings suggest that men need more reliable information, preferably on a reputable UK site, about talking to their children, the physical effects of treatment and the options of having a prosthesis.

Abstract:

Researches in the fields in science and statistics often go beyond the two-variable cause-and-effect relationship, and also try to understand what connects the causal relationship and what changes the magnitude or direction of the causal relationship between two variables, predictor(T) and outcome (Y). A mediator (Z) is a third variable that links a cause and an effect, whereby T causes the Z and Z causes Y. In general, a given variable may be said to function as a mediator to the extent that it accounts for the relation between the predictor and the outcome (Baron and Kenny, 1986). The initial question regards the appropriate characterization of a mediation effect. Most studies, when comparing one or more treatments focus on an average mediating effect. This average mediating effect can be misleading when the mediating effects vary from subject to subject in the population. The primary focus of this research is to investigate individual mediating effects in a population, and to define a variance of these individual mediating effects. A concept called subject-mediator (treatment) interaction is presented and its role in evaluating a mediator’s behavior on a population of units is studied. This is done using a framework sometimes called a counterfactual model. Some common experimental designs that provide different knowledge about this interaction term are studied. The subgroup analysis is the most common analytic approach for examining heterogeneity of mediating effects. In mediation analysis, situations can arise where Z and Y cannot both be measured on an individual unit. We refer to such data as terminal measures data. We show a design where a mediating effect cannot be estimated in terminal measures data and another one where it can be, with an assumption. The assumption is linked to the idea of pseudo-replication. These ideas are discussed and a simulation study illustrates the issues involved when analyzing terminal measures data. We know of no methods that are currently available that specifically address terminal measures data.

Abstract:
The paper examines the diverse ways of self-definition of individuals in a changing reality, which is attributed to a hybrid and ambiguous character. The emphasis is on identity discourse in the individual dimension. While questioning the possibility of clearly defining the Self in the world of diverse relations and ambiguous social reality, a dilemma arises: one identity or many identities? It should be pointed out here that there is a transition from identity as a complex and dynamic attribute (aspect) of the individual to the multiplicity of individual identities as a variety of its identifications with the objects of the social world. More radically, doubts can be raised here about the usefulness of the category of identity. Behind such thinking are not merely methodological difficulties in recognizing the different dimensions and contexts in which the individual defines his or her identity or identities. It is certainly possible to speak here of a different meaning attributed to the category of identity, especially in its theoretical-cognitive sense. The consequence of this is also the different meaning that is attributed to the utility of this category, i.e. its instrumental use for the self-determination of individuals. The stronger the adherence to the terminology of modernity, the stronger the indication of a possible and fully conscious (reflexive) project that identity may become for the constructively acting individual. Departure from modern nomenclature complicates the issues of defining identity itself, and thus also does not make the task easier in the sphere of social practice and does not provide easy utilitarian solutions. Moreover, the difficulties concern not only what individual identity is (or could be) in the functional sense, but also its very structure and the fundamental question of its durability (or at least relative stability) in the context of individualization.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the relationship between interaction behaviors and the cognitive characteristics of participating individuals in engineering design teams engaged in concept generation. Individual characteristics were measured using the Kirton Adaption-Innovation inventory (KAI), which assesses an individual’s cognitive preference for structure in seeking and responding to change. Team interactions were measured using the Interaction Dynamics Notation (IDN), which allows interaction behaviors to be quantitatively analyzed. A correlation analysis revealed statistically significant correlations between individual characteristics and specific interaction behaviors, and ideation utterances. An interaction sequence analysis of the team data also revealed specific interaction sequences associated with greater probabilities of idea occurrence within the team. These findings serve as a first step towards building a cognitive-behavioral model of engineering design team performance.

Abstract:
In this paper, which draws from my current research on back to-the-city movements in America, I suggest a direct correlation between a predominant emphasis on values of self advancement, individual rights, and mass individual consumption (consumership) and a parallel underdevelopment of values focused on family and civic responsibility (citizenship). I define consumership as a way of thinking and living, broadly guided by three interconnected perspectives: an overarching emphasis on material relationships, a paramount concern for maximum efficiency in human institutions, and a view that our environment is a commodity. I define citizenship as a unique quality of community gained from exercising our human capacity to care, share, and trust beyond our immediate ties of lunship, friendship, and ethnicity; ie., a quality of caring, sharing, and trusting that honors nature’s rhythms and serves as a source of empowerment for individuals seeking to build common opportunities.

Abstract:
In the Philippines, the growing concern in the teaching of statistics at the secondary and tertiary levels is evident in various reform efforts initiated by individuals and professional groups of statisticians. This paper examines the past and on-going individual and institutional activities geared towards teacher training and preparation of statistics teachers in all levels of the Philippine educational system. It presents the Philippine experience as a good example of how the different individuals and groups work together to achieve reforms. Institutional efforts towards statistical capacity building are primarily done through the Philippine Statistical System and the Philippine Statistical Association . The challenges encountered in these reform efforts are examined as basis for recommended courses of action towards more effective institutionalization of reforms in statistics education.

Swannack, Robyn, Alys Young, and Claudine Storbeck. A scoping review of deaf sign language users’ perceptions and experiences of well-being in South Africa. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.11.0082.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: This scoping review concerns deaf adult sign language users from any country (e.g. users of South African Sign Language (SASL), British Sign Language (BSL), American Sign Language (ASL) and so forth). It concerns well-being understood to include subjective well-being and following the WHO’s (2001) definition of well-being as “mental health as a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Well-being has three components (Steptoe, Deaton, and Stone, 2015; Stewart-Brown, Tennant, Tennant, Platt, Parkinson and Weich, 2009): (i) Live evaluation, also referred to life satisfaction, which concerns an individual’s evaluation of their life and their satisfaction with its quality and how good they feel about it; (ii) hedonic well-being which refers to everyday feelings or moods and focuses on affective components (feeling happy); (iii) eudaimonic well-being, which emphasises action, agency and self-actualisation (e.g. sense of control, personal growth, feelings of purpose and belonging) that includes judgments about the meaning of one’s life. Well-being is not defined as the absence of mental illness but rather as a positive state of flourishing that encompasses these three components. The review is not concerned with evidence concerning mental illness or psychiatric conditions amongst deaf signers. A specific concern is deaf sign language users’ perceptions and experiences of well-being.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: the proposed business didactic game is aimed at developing the creative attitude of the teacher to his own professional activity. The motivational material of a business didactic game allows the teacher to understand that his activity has sometimes elusive pedagogical algorithms and strategies, the totality of which can be called such a concept as an individual methodological style of activity. In addition to pedagogical strategies, this concept reflects the unique psychological qualities of the individual, which allow the teacher to influence the quality of the acquired knowledge. It is also emphasized that the concept of an individual style of activity is the result of the teacher's internal hard work, the result of a long search, value. On this basis, the individual style of activity rejects the concept of "charisma", since it is self-sufficient and does not need to be theatrically announced to any audience. All the value bases of an individual methodological style of activity are aimed not at narcissism, but at helping students in mastering the internal content of a particular academic subject. The leading sign of the formation of an individual methodological style of activity is the ability to correctly combine one's original author's position on the content principles of the taught subject with the guiding and prescriptive lines of the work program. The author's position of the teacher, which combines the emotional and rational components, is also reflected in external behavioral mechanisms. At the same time, expressive forms of behavior are not a mandatory feature of the individual style of methodological activity. A special style of preparing educational material, a list of methods and forms of teaching is structured on the basis of a situational understanding of the subtle mechanisms of teaching, educating and developing schoolchildren

Vonk, Jaynie. Sustainable Water and Sanitation in Sierra Leone: Impact evaluation of the ‘Improved WASH Services in WAU and WAR Districts’ project. Oxfam GB, January 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2021.8401.

Full text
Abstract:
Between October 2016 and March 2019, the Freetown WASH Consortium, led by Oxfam with Against Hunger, Concern Worldwide and Save the Children as members, carried out the 'Improved WASH Services in Western Area Urban (WAU) and Western Area Rural (WAR) Districts' project. Broadly, the project aimed to improve the availability, accessibility, affordability and sustainability of integrated water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, in alignment with the Government of Sierra Leone's national agenda on Ebola recovery and increased preparedness against possible future outbreaks. This Effectiveness Review evaluates the success of this project to increase the sustainability of water and sanitation systems and services. Using a quasi-experimental, mixed method evaluation design, impact is assessed among individuals, households and communities in intervention and comparison areas. Community-level factors contributing to better individual- and household-level outcomes are explored. Find out more by reading the full report now.

Baader, Franz, Gerhard Brewka, and Oliver Fernández Gil. Adding Threshold Concepts to the Description Logic EL. Technische Universität Dresden, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.215.

Full text
Abstract:
We introduce an extension of the lightweight Description Logic EL that allows us to de_ne concepts in an approximate way. For this purpose, we use a graded membership function, which for each individual and concept yields a number in the interval [0, 1] expressing the degree to which the individual belongs to the concept. Threshold concepts C~t for ~ then collect all the individuals that belong to C with degree ~ t. We generalize a well-known characterization of membership in EL concepts to construct a specific graded membership function deg, and investigate the complexity of reasoning in the Description Logic τEL(deg), which extends EL by threshold concepts defined using deg. We also compare the instance problem for threshold concepts of the form C>t in τEL(deg) with the relaxed instance queries of Ecke et al.

McCall, Jamie, Nora Anzawi, Miles Zeller, and James Onorevole. Growth, Equity, and Individual Welfare: A Theoretical Framework for “Moving the Needle” on CDFI Impact Evaluation. Carolina Small Business Development Fund and AltCap, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46712/evaluation.frameworks.

Full text
Abstract:
Community development financial institutions (CDFI) are grassroots entities that guide sustainable economic growth by prioritizing the needs of marginalized populations. Traditionally, CDFIs have been evaluated by the extent to which their activities foster local development or lessen economic inequities. Our analysis suggests this phenomenon is the result of deeply entrenched alliances between the public sector and the interests of CDFI stakeholders. These institutions are major resource providers and thus have set the narrative around CDFI impact measurement and evaluation. We propose an alternative framework that prioritizes changes in individual welfare which foster economic autonomy and improve relationships with community institutions. Our framework is admittedly theoretical, and further iteration will be required to operationalize it into a workable concept. Ultimately though, the existing framework around these issues is broken – and we find scant evidence that it can be salvaged.

Influencing factors and barriers to retention among regional and remote undergraduate nursing students in Australia: A systematic review of current research evidence. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.6.0087.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: To explore the attrition problems, influencing factors and barriers to retention among regional and remote nursing students who enrolled in the undergraduate programs in Australia. Condition being studied: Student retention concerns an individual’s commitment to an learning goal. Low student retention has been a long-standing issue for nursing programs and it is an important threat to the future nursing workforce. Attrition is measured by the number of students enrolled in the first year who do not complete their study in the following year. With the growth of online programs, the issue of high attrition raises concern for students enrolled in these programs. Moreover, the social context of students may influence positive motivation and affect their decision to stay in their nursing programs.

Identifying degradation products responsible for increased toxicity of UV-degraded insensitive munitions. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42020.

Full text
Abstract:
Degradation of insensitive munitions (IMs) by ultraviolet (UV) light has become a concern following observations that some UV-degradation products have increased toxicity relative to parent compounds in aquatic organisms. This investigation focused on the Army's IM formulation, IMX-101, composed of three IM constituents: 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), and nitroguanidine (NQ). The IM constituents and IMX-101 were irradiated in a UV photo-reactor and then administered to Daphnia pulex in acute (48 h) exposures comparing toxicities relative to the parent materials. UV-degradation of DNAN had little effect on mortality whereas mortality for UV-degraded NTO and NQ increased by factors of 40.3 and 1240, making UV-degraded NQ the principle driver of toxicity when IMX-101 is UV-degraded. Toxicity investigations for specific products formed during UV-degradation of NQ, confirmed greater toxicity than the parent NQ for degradation products. Summation of the individual toxic units for the complete set of individually measured UV-degradation products identified for NQ only accounted for 25% of the overall toxicity measured in the exposures to the UV-degraded NQ product mixture. Given the underestimation of toxicity using the sum toxic units for the individually measured UV-degradation products of NQ, we conclude that: (1) other unidentified NQ degradation products contributed principally to toxicity and/or (2) synergistic toxicological interactions occurred among the NQ degradation product mixture that exacerbated toxicity.

Baader, Franz, and Oliver Fernández Gil. Extending the Description Logic τEL(deg) with Acyclic TBoxes. Technische Universität Dresden, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.226.

Full text
Abstract:
In a previous paper, we have introduced an extension of the lightweight Description Logic EL that allows us to define concepts in an approximate way. For this purpose, we have defined a graded membership function deg, which for each individual and concept yields a number in the interval [0; 1] expressing the degree to which the individual belongs to the concept. Threshold concepts C~t for ~ 2 ∈ {<, ≤, >, ≥} then collect all the individuals that belong to C with degree ~ t. We have then investigated the complexity of reasoning in the Description Logic τEL(deg), which is obtained from EL by adding such threshold concepts. In the present paper, we extend these results, which were obtained for reasoning without TBoxes, to the case of reasoning w.r.t. acyclic TBoxes. Surprisingly, this is not as easy as might have been expected. On the one hand, one must be quite careful to define acyclic TBoxes such that they still just introduce abbreviations for complex concepts, and thus can be unfolded. On the other hand, it turns out that, in contrast to the case of EL, adding acyclic TBoxes to τEL(deg) increases the complexity of reasoning by at least on level of the polynomial hierarchy.
