Abstract:
This thesis describes the formulation and experimental use of psychological principles that apply to conceptual modelling as practised during information systems development. The principles address cognition (perception, memory and mental models) and group dynamics. The aim is to determine whether application of fundamental psychological principles can help to make modellers, especially those who are relatively inexperienced, more effective. An experimental graphical modelling technique (method 'X') is presented that conforms to the psychological principles, together with a supporting software tool for visual construction of models in the design of typical business database systems. The effectiveness of both inexperienced and expert modellers using method 'X' in real business situations was compared with that of modellers using conventional object modelling. Data was gathered in a series of field experiments using participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews and by analysing the resulting models. With conventional object modelling, untrained modellers produced results that were grossly incomplete and incorrect (22-35%, on average). Using method 'X', untrained modellers produced models that were almost complete and correct (better than 82%). Significant productivity gains were observed with method 'X' (approximately 150% for expert modeller and over 450% for untrained modellers). For an expert modeller no measurable differences in quality were observed between methods, but the modeller regarded the quality of method 'X' models as better and expressed a preference method 'X' over the conventional approach. The results appear to support the idea of re-engineering conceptual modelling practice according to psychological first principles. The fact that more dramatic performance improvements were observed for inexperienced modellers suggests that modelling need not require a high degree of expertise, if methods and tools are adapted appropriately. The results could be exploited to empower untrained modellers, such as end users, who wish to develop large software systems but lack access to the skills of trained IT professionals.

Abstract:
Aircraft manufacturing is not only a difficult business but also a very competitive one, the consequences of any drop in sales would cost billions, loss of jobs, and maybe an economical failure. Therefore, concentrating on just flight performance and adding new technologies just because they exit is not enough to win the airlines attention, especially the flow cost carriers. Manufactures must be able to convince operators that the application of a new design or technology will produce a favourable change in the bottom line of their balance sheets and not just a reduction in fuel burn. Aircraft designers must put more emphasis on what happens to the aircraft after it leaves the assembly line, through the designed life operation cycle of the aircraft with the airline customer, quality should be built in to the aircraft. Knowing what are the airline's concerns, how the aircraft with a given design behaves, and the issues that the airline has, is vital. Firstly, it is important to know what are the issues that the airline has, the costumer (airlines) needs are identified, and, since fleet planning is the top level decision making department in the airline in which a decision is made to buy one aircraft over the other, it is important to understand the process and the elements that are involved in fleet planning. So fleet planning was studied. Second different technologies for the design have been looked at and selected. Then the aircraft, airline, airport, and air traffic control are studied, as well as the interaction between them. A key element of the research is a simulation program DEBOS that has been built to see the impact of the different design technologies and concepts through the operation of a simulation fleet size of 23 aircraft. The Boeing777 aircraft has been chosen to be the base line of the study. Finally, it was found that a given technology with improved performance, or a new concept, would improve the aircraft attractiveness only if it has better life cycle behaviour characteristics.

Abstract:
The models of spatial relations have stimulated great interest among researchers in spatial databases from the nineties. We can distinguish three different levels of representation where we can identify spatial relations: a purely geometric one, where objects are represented as point-sets and relations can be formally defined in mathematical terms; a computational level, where objects are represented as spatial data types and relations are calculated using spatial operators; a user level, where objects and relations correspond to the concepts of user context. >From a geometric point of view, we can consider a categorization of spatial relations in three groups: topological, projective, and metric. This dissertation proposes both a general framework for modelling qualitative spatial relations and presents new developments for projective relations. By providing a formal mathematical framework to a qualitative description of relations, the models are of great research interest in geographic information science. The most important geometric property that has been taken into account is the collinearity of three points. The importance of this property is such that it influences the whole approach, making ternary relations the formal basis of the models. We have developed algorithms to calculate the relations from a vector data structure and a reasoning system on ternary projective relations. We also extended the model to the three-dimensional space and the sphere. >From a user perspective, projective relations should consider context information, combining them with reference systems to avoid ambiguities in the meaning of the relation
Les modèles pour les relations spatiales ont stimulé un grand intérêt parmi les chercheurs dans les bases de données spatiales des années 90. On peut distinguer trois niveaux différents de représentation où nous pouvons identifier des relations spatiales : un niveau purement géométrique, où des objets sont représentés comme ensembles de points et les relations peuvent être formellement définies en termes mathématiques ; un niveau informatique, où les objets sont représentés en tant que types de données spatiaux et les relations sont calculées au moyen d'opérateurs spatiaux ; un niveau utilisateur, où les objets et les relations correspondent aux concepts du contexte d'utilisateur. Du point de vue géométrique, on peut considérer une catégorisation des relations spatiales dans trois groupes : topologique, projectif, et métrique. Ce mémoire de thèse propose à la fois un cadre général pour la modélisation des relations spatiales qualitatives, et présente des nouveaux développements pour les relations projectives. En offrant un cadre mathématique formel à une description qualitative des relations, les modèles envisagés se révèlent d’un grand intérêt dans la recherche en sciences de l’information géographique. La propriété géométrique la plus importante qui a été prise en considération est la colinéarité entre trois points. L’importance de cette propriété est telle qu’elle conditionne toute l’approche, en faisant des relations ternaires la base formelle des modèles envisagés. Nous avons développé les algorithmes pour calculer les relations à partir d'une structure de données en format vectoriel et un système de raisonnement sur les relations projectives ternaires. On a aussi étendu les modèles vers l’espace trois-dimensionnelles et la sphère. Du point de vue de l’utilisateur, les relations projectives doivent envisager l’information sur le contexte, en les combinant avec des systèmes de référence pour ôter les ambiguïtés du sens de la relation

The preliminary design of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) algorithms andAttitude and Orbital Control Systems (AOCS) for spacecraft plays an important rolein the planning of a space mission. Many missions require accurate positioning andattitude control to be able to full the mission objectives. In an early phase of conceptualstudies, trade-os have to be made to the GNC/AOCS subsystem designand compromises with respect to other subsystem designs have to be taken intoaccount. This demands for the possibility of rapid prototyping where design parameters,such as the choice of sensors and actuators, can be changed easily to assessthe compliance to the mission requirements. This thesis presents the modelling ofGNC/AOCS components for a toolbox created in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.The resulting toolbox is a user-friendly tool, which simplies the creationof GNC/AOCS system simulations for conceptual studies. A number of completesimulations were constructed to demonstrate the capabilities of the toolbox.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a new approach to designing large organizational databases. The approach emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to the design process. The development of the proposed approach was based on a comprehensive examination of the issues of relevance to the design and utilization of databases. Such issues include conceptual modelling, organization theory, and semantic theory. The conceptual modelling approach presented in this thesis is developed over three design stages, or model perspectives. In the semantic perspective, concept definitions were developed based on established semantic principles. Such definitions rely on meaning - provided by intension and extension - to determine intrinsic conceptual definitions. A tool, called meaning-based classification (MBC), is devised to classify concepts based on meaning. Concept classes are then integrated using concept definitions and a set of semantic relations which rely on concept content and form. In the application perspective, relationships are semantically defined according to the application environment. Relationship definitions include explicit relationship properties and constraints. The organization perspective introduces a new set of relations specifically developed to maintain conformity of conceptual abstractions with the nature of information abstractions implied by user requirements throughout the organization. Such relations are based on the stratification of work hierarchies, defined elsewhere in the thesis. Finally, an example of an application of the proposed approach is presented to illustrate the applicability and practicality of the modelling approach.

Abstract:
This Thesis addresses the systematic construction of Decision Making Models (DMMs) from the conceptualization stage to its application in specific situations, with special emphasis on !he treatment of scenarios where there is a hierarchy of decision levels, common in the Process Systems (PS). Although the methodologies developed are generic, the scope of this Thesis is limited to the perspective of Process Engineering. The central component required to construct a DMM is the conceptual description of the reality, which supports the system alisation of management procedures . During this description, two different dom ains can be identified: the PS Domain, useful to describe the structure of the process as such (physical reality and the way in which its elements are related), and the Management Domain, identified in this Thesis as associated with the Conceptual Constraints (CC) that describe the restrictions associated with the management of the process . In this way, the PS Domain includes concepts and relationships that appear in the control standards of the process followed by the company: the description of the process to be developed, the description of the physical equipment in which it is developed , and that of its interactions, giving rise to the control of the execution of the procedures; this domain should allow managing the construction, design, operation and control of any manufacturing system. On the other hand, the CC Domain contains the information associated with the concepts and relationships that m ust be fulfilled to ensure a coherent set of decisions, with the purpose of identifying and representing the systematics to follow during the decision-making process, giving rise to the conceptual representation of this system and, finally, the construction of the corresponding DMM. The first challenge addressed in this thesis is associated with the systematisation of conceptual modelling from semantic information, for the construction ofontologies from textual sources and a procedure to verify the interna! coherence of lhese sources. The application of this methodology has been used for the identification of the essential concepts and relationships in the PS Domain, allowing creating a generic, common and shared model, unlike the existing models. In the next step, this PS Domain has been used to solve management problems in systems that comprise multi-level hierarchies. The resulting decision-making process allows integrating the decisions made al each level, ensuring their consistency from an approach that simultaneously considers the management of all available information (data and knowledge). On the other hand, the introduction of the necessary concepts and relationships to ensure the feasibility of the process management decisions, through the CC Domain, allows the development of systematic DMM creation procedures: this domain classifies the constrains (balances, sequence, etc.), adds abstrae! elements to them (e.g.: produced and consumed amounts) and allows to generalize the relation of its compone nis with the information associated to the PS Domain. The last part of this Thesis deals with the integration of the PS and CC Domains, and their application for the generation of new decision-making systems . For this, algorithms have been designed that, starting from the previously identified and classified restrictions, and patterns of DMMs also previously identified from existing cases, exploit the information available through the instances in the PS Domain, to generate new DMMs according to the user's specifications. lts use is illustrated through cases from different environments, demonstrating the generalisation capacity of the created systematics.
Esta Tesis aborda la construcción sistemática de Modelos para la toma de Decisiones (DMMs) desde la etapa de conceptualización hasta su aplicación en situaciones concretas, con especial énfasis en el tratamiento de escenarios en los que existe una jerarquía de niveles de decisión, habitual en la Industria de Proceso (PS). Aunque las metodologías desarrolladas son genéricas, el alcance de esta Tesis se limita a la perspectiva de la Ingeniería de Procesos. El componente central requerido para construir un DMMs es la descripción conceptual de la realidad a la que se orienta, que a su vez respalda la sistematización de los procedimientos de gestión. Durante esta descripción, se pueden identificar planteamientos asociados a dos dominios diferentes: el Dominio del Proceso (PS), útil para describir la estructura del proceso como tal (realidad física y forma en la que se relacionan sus elementos), y el Dominio de Gestión, asociado a las Restricciones Conceptuales (CC) que describen las restricciones asociadas a la gestión del proceso. El Dominio PS incluye conceptos y relaciones que aparecen en los estándares de control del proceso que sigue la empresa: la descripción del proceso a desarrollar, la descripción de los equipos físicos en los que se desarrolla, y la de sus interacciones, que dan lugar al control de ejecución de los procedimientos; este dominio debe permitir la construcción, el diseño, la operación y el control de cualquier sistema de fabricación. Por su parte, el Dominio CC contiene la información asociada a los conceptos y las relaciones que deben cumplirse para asegurar un conjunto coherente de decisiones, con el propósito de identificar y representar la sistemática a seguir durante el proceso de toma de decisiones, dando lugar a la representación conceptual de esta sistemática y, finalmente, a la construcción del correspondiente DMM. El primer reto abordado en esta Tesis está asociado a la sistematización del modelado conceptual a partir de información semántica, para construcción de ontologías a partir de fuentes textuales y de un procedimiento para verificar la coherencia interna de dichas fuentes. La aplicación de esta metodología se ha utilizado para la identificación de los conceptos y las relaciones esenciales en el Dominio PS, permitiendo crear un modelo genérico, común y compartido, a diferencia de los modelos existentes. En el siguiente paso, este Dominio PS se ha utilizado para la resolución de problemas de gestión en sistemas que comprenden múltiples niveles de jerarquías funcionales. El proceso de toma de decisiones resultante permite integrar las decisiones tomadas en cada nivel, asegurando su coherencia a partir de un enfoque que contempla simultáneamente la gestión de toda la información disponible (datos y conocimiento). Por su parte, la introducción de los conceptos y relaciones necesarios para asegurar la factibilidad de las decisiones de gestión del proceso, a través del Dominio CC, permite el desarrollo de procedimientos sistemáticos de creación de DMMs: este Dominio clasifica las restricciones (balances, secuencia, etc.), agrega elementos abstractos a dichas restricciones (p.e.: cantidad producida y consumida) y permite generalizar la relación de sus componentes con la información asociada al Dominio PS. En la última parte de esta Tesis se aborda la integración de los Dominios PS y CC, y su aplicación para la generación de nuevos sistemas de toma de decisiones. Para ello, se han diseñado algoritmos que, partiendo de las restricciones anteriormente identificadas y clasificadas, y patrones de DMMs también previamente identificados a partir de casos ya existentes, explotan la información disponible a través de las instancias del Dominio PS, para generar de nuevos modelos de toma de decisión de acuerdo con las especificaciones del usuario. Su utilización se ilustra a través de casos procedentes de diferentes entornos, demostrando la capacidad de generalización de la sistemática creada.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to showcase the workcycle and feasibility of Test-Driven Conceptual Modelling (TDCM) on a real-sized system. TDCM is a novel methodology to develop conceptual schemas which can be understood as belonging to the wider eXtreme Programming (XP) family called Test-Driven Development (TDD). Its aim is to iteratively develop conceptual schemas through automated testing at the conceptual level.In order to achieve its goal, this project is built upon the state of the art of conceptual schema testing, as seen in recent publications. It has been carried out in accordance with the design-science research model to ensure both rigour and relevance. We contribute to TDCM experimentation by applying it to a case study. In particular, this project focus on the development, by reverse engineering, of the conceptual schema of Remember the Milk (RTM), a popular system that supports the management of tasks. As a complementary goal, some suggestions to improve the RTM system will be presented thanks to the knowledge gathered during the process. This document collects the result of this experience.Our findings confirm that this methodology is promising, because the resultant conceptual's schema validation and high semantic quality paid off its relatively small additional development efforts.

Abstract:
In the context of business intelligence (BI), the accuracy and accessibility of information consolidation play an important role. Integrating data from different sources involves its transformation according to constraints expressed in an appropriate language. The Conceptual Integration Modelling framework (CIM) acts as such a language. The CIM is aimed to allow business users to specify what information is needed in a simplified and comprehensive language. Achieving this requires raising the level of abstraction to the conceptual level, so that users are able to pose queries expressed in a conceptual query language (CQL). The CIM is comprised of three facets: an Extended Entity Relationship (EER) model (a high level conceptual model that is used to design databases), a conceptual schema against which users pose their queries, a relational multidimensional model that represents data sources, and mappings between the conceptual schema and sources. Such mappings can be specified in two ways: in the first scenario, the so-called global-as-view (GAV), the global schema is mapped to views over the relational sources by specifying how to obtain tuples of the global relation from tuples in the sources. In the second scenario, sources may contain less detailed information (a more aggregated data) so the local relations are defined as views over global relations that is called as local-as-view (LAV). In this thesis, we address the problem of expressibility and decidability of queries written in CQL. We first define the semantics of the CIM by translating the conceptual model so we could translate it into a set of first order sentences containing a class of conceptual dependencies (CDs) - tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs) and equality generating dependencies (EGDs), in addition to certain (first order) restrictions to express multidimensionality. Here a multidimensionality means that facts in a data warehouse can be described from different perspectives. The EGDs set the equality between tuples and the TGDs set the rule that two instances are in a subtype association (more precise definitions are given further in the thesis). We use a non-conflicting class of conceptual dependencies that guarantees a query's decidability. The non-conflicting dependencies avoid an interaction between TGDs and EGDs. Our semantics extend the existing semantics defined for extended entity relationship models to the notions of fact, dimension category, dimensional hierarchy and dimension attributes. In addition, a class of conceptual queries will be defined and proven to be decidable. A DL-Lite logic has been extensively used for query rewriting as it allows us to reduce the complexity of the query answering to AC0. Moreover, we present a query rewriting algorithm for the class of defined conceptual dependencies. Finally, we consider the problem in light of GAV and LAV approaches and prove the query answering complexities. The query answering problem becomes decidable if we add certain constraints to a well-known set of EGDs + TGDs dependencies to guarantee summarizability. The query answering problem in light of the global-as-a-view approach of mapping has AC0 data complexity and EXPTIME combined complexity. This problem becomes coNP hard if we are to consider it a LAV approach of mapping.

Abstract:
A computer assisted conceptual aircraft design program has been developed (CACAD). It has an optimisation capability, with extensive break-down in maintenance costs. CACAD's aim is to optimise the size, and configurations of turbofan-powered transport aircraft. A methodology was developed to enhance the reliability of current aircraft systems, and was applied to avionics systems. R&M models of thermal management were developed and linked with avionics failure rate and its maintenance cost prediction methods. The impact of the environmental control system, and engine-provided bleed flow was also modelled and incorporated into CACAD. The program showed the ARINC 600 & 408A flow rates to the avionics bay, and to the deck instruments may both profitably be increased by 50%. This keeps the direct operating cost (DOC) increase at bay for long-range passenger aircraft, and offers a reduction of up to 1% in DOC for the short to medium range passenger aircraft. A methodology was developed to model all aspects of future high risk technologies, with special consideration given to reliability, maintainability, and development cost (R, M&D) predictions as applied to variable camber wings (VCW). Many aspects of VCW were modelled. These included different types of drag saving due to chord- wise, as well as span-wise camber variation. Models were also derived for mass, maintenance cost, and extra development cost increments for wing trailing edge devices, flight control, and hydraulic systems. On incorporation into CACAD, a reduction in DOC of up to 3.5% was predicted. The VCW technology were evaluated for DOC improvements, against a number of existing, future, and derivative aircraft, under different sensitivity conditions. R, M&D predictions were shown to be decisive in addressing the feasibility of a new technology. The R&M predictions of the whole study shows that, long range, low to medium capacity derivative transport aircraft are most appropriate for the VCW technology, and the short to medium range, low to medium capacity aircraft are most suitable for reliability enhancement projects of aircraft advanced systems.

CACAD's aim is to optimise the size, and configurations of turbofan-powered transport aircraft. A methodology was developed to enhance the reliability of current aircraft systems, and was applied to avionics systems. R&M models of thermal management were developed and linked with avionics failure rate and its maintenance cost prediction methods. The impact of the environmental control system, and engine-provided bleed flow was also modelled and incorporated into CACAD. The program showed the ARINC 600 & 408A flow rates to the avionics bay, and to the deck instruments may both profitably be increased by 50%. This keeps the direct operating cost (DOC) increase at bay for long-range passenger aircraft, and offers a reduction of up to 1% in DOC for the short to medium range passenger aircraft. A methodology was developed to model all aspects of future high risk technologies, with special consideration given to reliability, maintainability, and development cost (R, M&D) predictions as applied to variable camber wings (VCW). Many aspects of VCW were modelled. These included different types of drag saving due to chord- wise, as well as span-wise camber variation. Models were also derived for mass, maintenance cost, and extra development cost increments for wing trailing edge devices, flight control, and hydraulic systems. On incorporation into CACAD, a reduction in DOC of up to 3.5% was predicted. The VCW technology were evaluated for DOC improvements, against a number of existing, future, and derivative aircraft, under different sensitivity conditions. R, M&D predictions were shown to be decisive in addressing the feasibility of a new technology. The R&M predictions of the whole study shows that, long range, low to medium capacity derivative transport aircraft are most appropriate for the VCW technology, and the short to medium range, low to medium capacity aircraft are most suitable for reliability enhancement projects of aircraft advanced systems.

This thesis introduces a novel framework for life cycle mission modelling during conceptual aeronautical design. The framework supports object-oriented mission definition using Geographical Information System technology. Design concepts are defined generically, enabling simulation of most aeronautical vessels and many non-aeronautical vehicles. Moreover, the framework enables modelling of entire vessel fleets, business competitors and dynamic opera-tional changes throughout a vessel life cycle. Vessels consist of components deteriorating over time. Vessels carry payload that operates within the vessel environment. An agent-based simulation model implements most framework features. It is the first use of an agent-based simulation utilising a Geographical Information System during conceptual aero-nautical design. Two case studies for unmanned aircraft design apply the simulation. The first case study explores how the simulation supports conceptual design phase decisions. It simulates four different unmanned aircraft concepts in a search-and-rescue scenario including lifeboats. The goal is to learn which design best improves life cycle search performance. It is shown how operational and geographical impacts influence design decision making by generating novel performance information. The second case study studies the simulation optimisation capability: an existing aircraft design is modified manually based on simulation outputs. First, increasing the fuel tank capacity has a negative effect on life cycle performance due to mission constraints. Therefore, mission definition becomes an optimisation parameter. Changing mission flight speeds during specific segments leads to an overall improved design.

The research focuses upon the development of a simulation conceptual modelling methodology for SCM applications (termed the ‘SCM2’). The originality of the SCM2 is that it combines a prescribed procedure for simulation conceptual modelling with supply chain domain-specific knowledge. This procedure is used to guide participants to create a non-software specific description of the simulation model to be developed, in the context of SCM applications. The SCM2 is presented as a series of seven phases, associated steps, who participates in each step, information needs and points of entry between steps. The SCM2 is entered when a client has a supply problem to be evaluated using a simulation approach. The supply problem is described in terms of the improvement(s) to be evaluated, for a given objective(s) within its supply setting. From this description, how each objective is to be measured and how each improvement is to be represented is determined. The interconnections between model components and the immediate supply setting are discriminated, model boundary formulated and level of detail designed. The output from the SCM2 is a documented and validated conceptual model. The need for a greater understanding of how to perform the conceptual modelling stage, as part of a simulation project, is shown to be of great significance and relevance. In particular the thesis argues that no methodologies exist that can guide participants in a simulation project through the process of creating a simulation conceptual model. A research methodological programme is designed to review existing modelling practice, form a specification for the methodology, develop an outline for the SCM2, detail the outline through refinement and application and a preliminary validation of the SCM2. The specification is formed to identify a set of requirements that the methodology should address. The methodology is developed to meet the specification by refining the outline design using two developmental cases of typical and complex supply chain problems. The outline design is founded on existing practice for conceptual modelling and identifies ten key concepts that have been synthesised by considering the design issues for each requirement identified in the specification. A major advance made by this thesis is a suggestion that the process of conceptual modelling could benefit from utilising domain knowledge provided by the Supply Chain Council SCOR model. It is demonstrated that using SCOR is a powerful way to enable a more focused and efficient procedure for conceptual modelling. The methodology incorporates the key concepts and aligns these with a general process for conceptual modelling. A preliminary validation with a different supply chain illustration demonstrates that the methodology is initially ‘feasible’ and has ‘utility’. Future testing is required in different industrial contexts with actual participants and an opportunity exists to extend the methodology into a web-based application tool.

Conceptual modelling of knowledge has remained an open research challenge. Existing frameworks do not cope with problems such as multiple user viewpoints, the plurality of epistemologies and representational forms, the mutability of knowledge, and the great body of legacy encoded knowledge. This thesis addresses the lack of a systematic method for the conceptual modelling of knowledge by presenting a novel perspective for dynamic knowledge exchange together with an associated modelling framework and tools. The thesis establishes a new perspective, the erotetic perspective, based on question-and-answer exchanges that match knowledge needs with knowledge capacities. It presents a unified design framework within this perspective and introduces appropriate modelling constructs, the Functional Entity and the Knowledge Relation. The framework comprises a methodology (the Functional Entity Relationship Methodology), a diagramming system for drawing conceptual models (the Functional Entity Relationship Diagram) and a transactioning language for representing the knowledge exchanges (the Functional Entity Relationship Language). These respectively extend the classic Entity Relationship Diagram and the class of SQL-like languages adequately to describe all possible transactions involving encoded knowledge. The different types of Functional Entity are shown to cover the complete space of knowledge seeking and retrieval and cope with situations not possible in conventional data modelling. As the modelling framework is a secondary design artefact (one that is capable of producing routine design artefacts) the design science research approach of Gregor & Jones was used. This approach necessitates an Alexander pattern drawn from prior research to guide development, followed by expository instantiations of the artefacts sought. Evaluation comprising verification, validation, generalization, substantiation and some external accreditation was conducted throughout. The models developed were tested for mutual encompassing through docking, which also confirms the erotetic perspective. Illustrative cases are presented to show the completed framework in action.

Telehealth, the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) to support care delivery at a distance, is increasingly used in health systems worldwide. A service system is defined as a configuration of people, technologies, and other resources that interact with other service systems to create mutual value. Adopting a service system perspective thus allows understanding a telehealth service as an ICT-enabled service system. Adequately configuring resources, both tangible (e.g., hardware) and intangible (e.g., knowledge), is key to co-creating value through service systems. However, existing service system engineering methods and tools are not yet able to comprehensively capture the nature, role, and status of resources within service systems. In particular, while conceptual modelling is recognized as an excellent tool of understanding, designing, and monitoring for service engineering, existing conceptual modelling notations have limited abilities to express configurations of resources. In order to address this gap, the following research objectives are proposed: 1) Develop a conceptual framework of resource configurations as the basis for further developing a metamodel of resource configurations; 2) Develop a metamodel of resource configurations in ICT-enabled service systems that can formally express the constructs, relationships, and constraints within the domain of resource configurations; 3) Demonstrate and evaluate the metamodel by conducting a multiple-case study in the field of telehealth. This study will focus on telehealth as a representative instance of ICT-enabled service systems. The research design is guided by the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM). DSRM provides a well-structured process for developing and evaluating information systems artifacts, such as the proposed metamodel, that can solve practical problems while contributing to a knowledge base. A multiple-case study of telehealth services at a Canadian hospital will support the evaluation and refinement of the metamodel. The results of this research project include both conceptual and practical contributions. The metamodel of resource configurations derived from the reviewed literature and conceptual framework will provide a formal understanding of resource configurations in ICT-enabled service systems. The metamodel may also be adopted as a tool for professionals to capture and analyze resource configurations in the domain of ICT-enabled services such as telehealth.

Sweden has an enormous treasure in its vast number of large-scale historical maps from a period of 400 years made for different purposes, that we call map series. The maps are also very time and regional dependent with respect to their concepts. A large scanning project by Lantmäteriverket will make most of these maps available as raster images. In many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, like history, human geography and archaeology, historical maps are of great importance as a source of information. They are used frequently in different studies for a variety of problems. A full and systematic analyse of this material from a database perspective has so far not been conducted. During the last decade or two, it has been more and more common to use data from historical maps in GIS-analysis. In this thesis a novel approach to model these maps is tested. The method is based on the modelling of each map series as its own ontology, thus focusing on the unique concepts of each map series. The scope of this work is a map series covering the province of Gotland produced during the period 1693-1705. These maps have extensive text descriptions concerned with different aspects of the mapped features. Via a code marking system they are attached to the maps. In this thesis a semantic analysis and an ontology over all the concepts found in the maps and text descriptions are presented. In our project we model the maps as close to the original structure as possible with a very data oriented view. Furthermore; we demonstrate how this ontology can be used as a conceptual schema for a logical E/R database schema. The Ontology is described in terms of the Protégé meta-model and the E/R schema in UML. The mapping between the two is a set of elementary rules, which are easy for a human to comprehend, but hard to automate. The E/R schema is implemented in a demonstration system. Examples of some different applications which are feasibly to perform by the system are presented. These examples go beyond the traditional use of historical maps in GIS today

Conceptual Modelling (CM) has received little attention in the area of Modelling and Simulation (M&S) and more specifically in Discrete Event Simulation (DES). It is widely agreed that CM is least understood despite its importance. This is however, not the case in other fields of science and engineering (especially, computer science, systems engineering and software engineering). In Computer Science (CS) alone, CM has been extensively used for requirements specification and some well-established methods are in practice. The aim of the thesis is to propose a CM framework based on the principles of software engineering and CS. The development of the framework is adapted from a well-known software engineering method called Structured Analysis and Design Technique (SADT), hence it is called SADT CM. It is argued that by adapting approaches from CS, similar benefits can be achieved in terms of formality, understanding, communication and quality. A comprehensive cross-disciplinary review of CM in CS and M&S is undertaken, which highlights the dearth of standards within M&S CM when compared to CS. Three important sub-fields of CS are considered for this purpose namely, information systems, databases and software engineering. The review identifies two potential methods that could be adopted for developing a M&S CM framework. The first method called PREView was found unsuitable for M&S CM in DES domain. Hence, the thesis concentrates on developing the framework based on SADT. The SADT CM framework is evaluated on three-in depth test cases that investigate the feasibility of the approach. The study also contributes to the literature by conducting a usability test of the CM framework in an experimental setting. A comprehensive user-guide has also been developed as part of the research for users to follow the framework.

The forest industry in Sweden covers 28 million hectare as productive woodland. The soil is important for the forests ecosystem and the soils performance is decreased with increased soil compaction. In order to reduce the impact on the soil done by forest machinery a conceptual suspension axle is presented with the purpose to replace traditional bogie axle system on the trolley part on forwarders. This thesis goal is to determine if the proposed suspension concept isaviableoptionintheforestryindustryintermsofstrengthanddurabilityoftheconstruction and manufacturing cost. The project focus primary on suspension and will not focus on the overall design of the trolley.Amodelisdevelopedwhichisbasedonaideaandmodelprototype. Thegoalofthemodelling is to achieve a construction that allows the suspension to be extended or intended while still beingabletoturnthewheels. Threedifferentloadscasesistested,astaticloadcasewherethree loads are applied to the simulation model, the second case is a fatigue analysis and the third case is a collision case analysis. Each load case is simulated at two different model cases, one with the suspension located at the center, the middle case, and one case with the suspension located at the end point, the extended case. Resulting in a total of six simulations for each design.The final suspension design have a total weight of 1140 kg of one suspension and fulfills the product specification on all but one points, the desirable turning radius. The static analysis showednocriticalpointforneithertheinitialdesignorthefinaldesigninneithertheintended or extended case, but showed higher stress levels when the model was simulated at the extended case. The fatigue results showed similar results between the initial and final design because of the critical points parts where not redesigned between the designs. The collision caseshowedsimilarcriticallyforcebetweenthedesigns,aforceofapproximately70kNand40 kN for the middle and extended case respectively is required to reach the yield strength when colliding with an object.The cost of producing one suspension is estimated to 45800 SEK and is calculated through the tool costing for designer (CFD), which estimates the manufacture cost at an early design phase. The material cost for the suspension is the largest expanse covering roughly 73% of the total cost. In order to conclude if the suspension generates lower soil compaction compared to traditional bogie axles, a experimentally test is the optimal procedure. To be able to conduct this kind of field test the model have to be further refined to be able to produce.Theworkconcludestheproposedsuspensionsystemwiththefinaldesign,intermsofstrength and durability of the construction and the estimated cost, is possible to function in the forestry industry with the restrictions used in this work.

Throughout the development of this report there will be a brief explanation of what the actual Aircraft Design Process is and in which stages the methodology that the authors are proposing will be implemented as well as the tools that will interact to produce this methodology.

The proposed tool will be the first part of a methodology that, according to the authors, by integrating separate tools that are currently used in different stages of the aeronautical design, will promote a decrease in the time frame for the initial stages of the design process.

The first part of the methodology above, that is proposed in this project, starts by creating a computer generated aircraft model and analyzing its basic aerodynamic characteristics “Lift Coefficient” and “Induced Drag Coefficient”, this step will be an alternative to statistical and empirical methods used in the industry, which require vast amount of data.

This task will be done in several steps, which will transfer the parametric aircraft model to an input file for the aerodynamic analysis program. To transfer the data a “translation” program has been developed that arranges the geometry and prepares the input file for analysis.

During the course of this report the reader will find references to existing aircrafts, such as the MD-11 or Airbus 310. However, these references are not intended to be an exact computer model of the mentioned airplanes. The authors are using this as reference so the reader can relate what he/she is seeing in this paper to existing aircrafts. By doing such comparison, the author intends to demonstrate that the Parametric Model that has been created possesses the capability to simulate to some extend the shape of existing aircrafts.

Finally from the results of this project it is concluded that the methodology in question is promising. Linking the two programs is possible and the aerodynamic characteristics of the models tested fall in the appropriate range. None the less the research must continue following the line that has been discussed in this report.

Service technology geared by its SOA architecture and enabling Web services is rapidly gaining in maturity and acceptance. Consequently, most worldwide (private and corporate) cross-organizations are embracing this paradigm by publishing, requesting and composing their businesses and applications in the form of (web-)services. Nevertheless, to face harsh competitiveness such service oriented cross-organizational applications are increasingly pressed to be highly composite, adaptive, knowledge-intensive and very reliable. In contrast to that, Web service standards such as WSDL, WSBPEL, WS-CDL and many others offer just static, manual, purely process-centric and ad-hoc techniques to deploy such services. The main objective of this thesis consists therefore in leveraging the development of service-driven applications towards more reliability, dynamically and adaptable knowledge-intensiveness. This thesis puts forward an innovative framework based on distributed high-level Petri nets and event-driven business rules. More precisely, we developed a new variant of high-level Petri Nets formalism called Service-based Petri nets (CSrv-Nets), that exhibits the following potential characteristics. Firstly, the framework is supported by a stepwise methodology that starts with diagrammatical UML-class diagrams and business rules and leads to dynamically adaptive services specifications. Secondly, the framework soundly integrates behavioural event-driven business rules and stateful services both at the type and instance level and with an inherent distribution. Thirdly, the framework intrinsically permits validation through guided graphical animation. Fourthly, the framework explicitly separates between orchestrations for modelling rule-intensive single services and choreography for cooperating several services through their governing interactive business rules. Fifthly, the framework is based on a two-level conceptualization: (1) the modelling of any rule-centric service with CSrv-Nets; (2) the smooth upgrading of this service modelling with an adaptability-level that allows for dynamically shifting up and down any rule-centric behavior of the running business activities.

[EN] Renewing software systems is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect software investment, which saves time, money and ensures uninterrupted access to technical support and product upgrades. There are several motivations to promote investment and scientific effort for specifying systems by means of conceptual models and supporting its evolution. In order to contribute to the requirements engineering field with automated software production methods, we design TraceME to cover the spectrum of activities from requirements to code focusing on organisational evolution. In this sense, the spectrum of activities involves various information system perspectives of analysis that need to be integrated. In this complex setting, traceability and conceptual models are key concepts. Mechanisms to trace software specifications from requirements to code are important to justify evolution processes; versions of information systems should be traced in order to get the connection between old and new specifications. Moreover, it is necessary to find mechanisms to facilitate change specifications, measurement, and interpretation. To design this thesis we follow Design Science by Roel Wieringa. Design Science gives us the hints on how to conduct the research, be rigorous, and put in practice scientific rules. Besides Design Science has been a key factor for structuring our research, we acknowledge the application of this framework since it has helps us to report clearly our findings. We build TraceME by making a method engineering effort, which shapes its fragmented nature in chunks. The architecture of TraceME opens a wide window of opportunities for its application in real world situations. To facilitate industrial adoption, we develop open source tools to support the implementation of the TraceME chunks. For example, one case study and one action-research protocols have been executed in two different organisations in Spain. The validation of TraceME has taken place in laboratory demonstrations, controlled experiments, action research and case study experiences in industry. Thanks to the validations various lessons learnt have been gathered and greatly influenced the maturity of the method. For example: the importance to consider end-users' perceptions for discovering needs to mitigate, and the significance to get knowledge from the application of TraceME in different contexts. The evidences from the validations demonstrate that TraceME is feasible to be applied to support evolution projects. In addition, future research is needed for promoting the implementation of TraceME. We envision short term and future-term work that motivate us to tackle the challenge to support evolution projects.

Existen variadas motivaciones para promover la investigación y desarrollo de soluciones para especificar y evolucionar sistemas de información mediante modelos conceptuales. Para contribuir al campo de la ingeniería de requisitos con métodos automáticos de producción de software, hemos diseñado el método TraceME para cubrir el espectro de actividades desde requisitos a código con un enfoque de evolución organizacional. De este modo, el espectro de actividades involucra diferentes perspectivas de análisis de sistemas de información que necesitan ser integradas. En este escenario tan complejo, la trazabilidad y los modelos conceptuales son conceptos clave. Las versiones de los sistemas de información deben ser trazables con el fin de establecer la conexión entre especificaciones obsoletas y actuales. Adicionalmente, es necesario encontrar mecanismos para facilitar la especificación del cambio, su medición e interpretación. Para diseñar esta tesis hemos seguido el marco de Design Science de Roel Wieringa. Design Science nos ha proporcionado las claves para conducir esta investigación, ser rigurosos y poner en práctica reglas científicas. Además de que Design Science ha sido un factor clave para estructurar nuestra investigación, reconocemos que la aplicación de este marco nos ha ayudado a reportar claramente nuestros hallazgos. Hemos aplicado ingeniería de métodos para diseñar y construir TraceME. Gracias a esto, la naturaleza de TraceME es conformada mediante fragmentos de método. La arquitectura de TraceME abre una amplia ventana de oportunidades para su aplicación en situaciones de la vida real. Para facilitar la adopción industrial de TraceME, hemos desarrollado herramientas de software libre para dar soporte a los fragmentos de TraceME. Por ejemplo, un caso de estudio y una experiencia de action research han sido ejecutadas en dos organizaciones en España. La validación de TraceME ha sido llevada a cabo mediante demostraciones de laboratorio, experimentos controlados, un caso de estudio y una experiencia de action research en industria. Como resultado, TraceME ha sido mejorado considerablemente; además hemos descubierto investigaciones a realizar a corto, mediano y largo plazo con el fin de implementar TraceME en la industria. Las evidencias obtenidas como resultado de las validaciones demuestra la factibilidad de TraceME para ser aplicado en proyectos de evolución organizacional. El trabajo futuro nos motiva a afrontar los retos que conlleva el soporte de proyectos de evolución de sistemas de información.
[CAT] L'evolució dels sistemes programari és una de les activitats més importants que permeten minimitzar el temps de posada en producció d'actualitzacions i nous desenvolupaments, reduir els costos que involucra desenvolupar una aplicació des de cero, a més d' assegurar l'accés ininterromput de serveis. Existixen diverses motivacions per promoure la investigació i desenvolupament de solucions per a especificar i evolucionar sistemes de informació mitjançant models conceptuals. Per tal de contribuir al camp de l'enginyeria de requisits amb mètodes automàtics de producció de programari, hem dissenyat el mètode TraceME per cobrir l'espectre d'activitats des de requisits a codi en un enfocament d'evolució organitzacional. Així, l'espectre d'activitats involucra diferents perspectives d'anàlisi de sistemes d'informació que necessiten ser integrades. En aquest escenari tan complex, la traçabilitat i els models conceptuals són conceptes clau. És necessari disposar de mecanismes per traçar especificacions de programari des de requisits a codi amb la fi de justificar processos d'evolució. Les versions dels sistemes d'informació deuen ser traçables amb la fi d'establir la connexió entre especificacions obsoletes i actuals. Addicionalment, és necessari trobar mecanismes per facilitar l'especificació del canvi, la seua mesura i interpretació. Per tal de dissenyar aquesta tesi, hem seguit el marc de Design Science de Roel Wieringa. Design Science ens ha proporcionat les claus per conduir aquesta investigació, ser rigorosos i posar en pràctica regles científiques. A més a més, Design Science ha sigut un factor clau per estructurar la nostra investigació, reconeixem que l'aplicació de aquest marc ens a ajudat a reportar clarament els nostres resultats. La validació de TraceME ha sigut portada a cap mitjançant demostracions de laboratori, experiments controlats , un cas d'estudi i una experiència de action research en l'industria. Com a resultat, TraceME ha sigut millorada considerablement; a més a més, hem descobert investigacions a realitzar a curt, mig i llarg termini amb la fi d'implementar TraceME a l'industria. Les evidències obtingudes com a resultat de les validacions, demostren la factibilitat de TraceME per ser aplicat en projectes d'evolució organitzacional. Two of the main needs when developing an information system for an organization are that system analysts know and understand the application domain and that the system properly supports the business processes of the organization. Consequently, elicitation of system requirements from business process models has been acknowledged as a suitable activity to deal with that needs. In addition, system requirements must be linked to subsequent development stages. However, system analysts can face many challenges when performing these activities. They may have problems communicating with customer stakeholders and may need to analyse and operationalize the purpose of the information system. Furthermore, system analysts must bridge the gap between business and system domains for specification of system requirements, specify different types of system requirements and guarantee that their specification is precise, consistent and homogeneous. In relation to object-oriented conceptual modelling-based information system development, system analysts must also avoid potential problems that may arise when a conceptual schema is created from system requirements as part of their link with subsequent development stages. For example, a conceptual schema can be incomplete and/or inconsistent if it is not properly managed. As a solution, this thesis presents a methodological approach for business process-based requirements specification and object-oriented conceptual modelling of information systems. The approach consists of four stages: organizational modelling, purpose analysis, specification of system requirements and derivation of object-oriented diagrams. By following the design research methodology for performing research in information systems, the methodological approach has been designed on the basis of many existing ideas and principles in academia and industry and provides new principles, mechanisms and guidance to address the challenges presented above.

In the construction sector, capturing the building product in a single information model with good interoperable capabilities has been the subject of much research efforts in at least the last three decades. Contemporary advancements in Information Technology and the efforts from various research initiatives in the AEC industry are showing evidence of progress with the advent of building information modelling (BIM). BIM presents the opportunity of electronically modelling and managing the vast amount of information embedded in a building project, from its conception to end-of-life. Researchers have been looking at extensions to expand its scope. Sustainability is one such modelling extension that is in need of development. This is becoming pertinent for the structural engineer as recent design criteria have put great emphasis on the sustainability credentials in addition to the traditional criteria of structural integrity, constructability and cost. Considering the complexity of nowadays designs, there is a need to provide decision support tools to aid the assessment of sustainability credentials. Such tools would be most beneficial at the conceptual design stage so that sustainability is built into the design solution starting from its inception. This research work therefore investigates how contemporary process and data modelling techniques can be used to map and model sustainability related information to inform the structural engineer’s building design decisions at an early stage. The research reviews current design decisions support systems on sustainability and highlights existing deficiencies. It examines the role of contemporary information modelling techniques in the building design process and employs this to tackle identified gaps. The sustainability of buildings is related to life cycle and is measured using indicator-terms such as life cycle costing, ecological footprint and carbon footprint. This work takes advantage of current modelling techniques to explore how these three indicators can be combined to provide sustainability assessment of alternative design solutions. It identifies the requirements for sustainability appraisal and information modelling to develop a requisite decision-support framework vis-à-vis issues on risk, sensitivity and what-if scenarios for implementation. The implementation employed object-oriented programming and feature modelling techniques to develop a sustainability decision-support prototype. The prototype system was tested in a typical design activity and evaluated to have achieved desired implementation requirements. The research concludes that the utilized current process and data modelling techniques can be employed to model sustainability related information to inform decisions at the early stages of structural design. As demonstrated in this work, design decision support systems can be optimized to include sustainability credentials through the use of object-based process and data modelling techniques. This thesis presents a sustainability appraisal framework, associated implementation algorithms and related object mappings and representations systems that could be used to achieve such decision support optimization.

Abstract:
Deoiling of petroleum wastewater is a major concern in petroleum process engineering. The conventional design procedure for deoiling systems consists of nine consecutive stages involving different people or groups. This thesis considers reengineering the conventional procedure, with the aim of increasing the efficiency of the process and productivity of people involved. The thesis then investigates the development of the appropriate computer support tools for the new procedure. The reengineering of the procedure is based on concepts proposed by Hammer (1990). The resulting procedure consists of four stages, where parallelism of the different tasks in the conventional procedure is explicitly considered. A model of the new procedure is described in UML (Unified Modelling Language). The advantage of using UML instead of using just natural language description is that UML uses graphical representation that is easy to use and less prone to ambiguity. Based on the new procedure, a decision support system called CODES (Conceptual DEsign of deoiling Systems) was designed and implemented. CODES supports the stages of wastewater assessment, equipment options at different locations, treatment disposal options and recommendations for final process configuration. Two Case Studies using operating field data are reported. The Case Studies using CODES proved to be straightforward to use and produced appropriate comments on the performance of the existing designs and proposed alternatives to satisfy the design requirements. CODES results agreed with knowledge from previous plant trials. The contribution of this thesis to the deoiling design process is twofold. Firstly, a critical review of the conventional procedure has resulted in a new one, which has potential benefits of improving a company's efficiency by reducing the number of people and activities involved, and shortening the design time. Secondly, the feasibility of applying the new procedure and CODES is successfully demonstrated through the case studies. Limitations and areas of extensions are also identified.

Data are the lifeblood of an organisation, being employed by virtually all business functions within a firm. Data management, therefore, is a critical process in prolonging the life of a company and determining the success of each of an organisation’s business functions. The last decade and a half has seen data warehousing rising in priority within corporate data management as it provides an effective supporting platform for decision support tools. A cross-sectional survey conducted by this research showed that data warehousing is starting to be used within organisations for their engineering asset management, however the industry uptake is slow and has much room for development and improvement. This conclusion is also evidenced by the lack of systematic scholarly research within asset management data warehousing as compared to data warehousing for other business areas. This research is motivated by the lack of dedicated research into asset management data warehousing and attempts to provide original contributions to the area, focussing on data modelling. Integration is a fundamental characteristic of a data warehouse and facilitates the analysis of data from multiple sources. While several integration models exist for asset management, these only cover select areas of asset management. This research presents a novel conceptual data warehousing data model that integrates the numerous asset management data areas. The comprehensive ethnographic modelling methodology involved a diverse set of inputs (including data model patterns, standards, information system data models, and business process models) that described asset management data. Used as an integrated data source, the conceptual data model was verified by more than 20 experts in asset management and validated against four case studies. A large section of asset management data are stored in a relational format due to the maturity and pervasiveness of relational database management systems. Data warehousing offers the alternative approach of structuring data in a dimensional format, which suggests increased data retrieval speeds in addition to reducing analysis complexity for end users. To investigate the benefits of moving asset management data from a relational to multidimensional format, this research presents an innovative relational vs. multidimensional model evaluation procedure. To undertake an equitable comparison, the compared multidimensional are derived from an asset management relational model and as such, this research presents an original multidimensional modelling derivation methodology for asset management relational models. Multidimensional models were derived from the relational models in the asset management data exchange standard, MIMOSA OSA-EAI. The multidimensional and relational models were compared through a series of queries. It was discovered that multidimensional schemas reduced the data size and subsequently data insertion time, decreased the complexity of query conceptualisation, and improved the query execution performance across a range of query types. To facilitate the quicker uptake of these data warehouse multidimensional models within organisations, an alternate modelling methodology was investigated. This research presents an innovative approach of using a case-based reasoning methodology for data warehouse schema design. Using unique case representation and indexing techniques, the system also uses a business vocabulary repository to augment case searching and adaptation. The system was validated through a case-study where multidimensional schema design speed and accuracy was measured. It was found that the case-based reasoning system provided a marginal benefit, with a greater benefits gained when confronted with more difficult scenarios.

Growing regions and tighter zoning in urban areas are pushing the hydrological bal-ances to establish new equilibriums which are causing a stress on the groundwater. Urbanization can affect the groundwater in several ways in which both raising and lowering of groundwater tables are a possibility. Both ways, sudden changes may bring on socioeconomic costs for the unprepared. Hydrogeological modelling creates the possibilities to visualise processes that cannot be seen with the naked eye. By combin-ing knowledge about the studied area from tests and measurements a conceptual model and additionally a numerical model can be created. To study the magnitude groundwater sensitivity to changes in land-cover a hydrogeological model was created using COMSOL multiphysics within the frame of a case study concerning a horse racetrack located in Täby, north of Stockholm. The model was calibrated against known data and was the applied on a future scenario where both the land-use and climate were changed. The outcome of the model showed that hydrogeological mod-elling is sensitive to the amount and quality of the in-data. Several insecurities in the results can be traced back to a lack of base material and by changing one parameter the result of other calibrated parameters would also change. Equifinality could thus be established to be a major issue when performing groundwater modelling. Further studies of relevant data requirements for different model objectives are required.

Application of agent-based modelling technology (ABM) to disaster management has to date been limited in nature. Existing research has concentrated on extending the model structures and agent architectures of complex algorithms to test robustness and extensibility of this simulation approach. Less attention has been brought to bear on testing the current state-of-the-art in ABM for modelling real-life systems. This thesis aims to take first steps in remedying this gap. It focuses on identifying the practical and conceptual issues which preclude wider utilisation of ABM in disaster management. It identifies that insufficient attention is put on incorporating real-life information and domain knowledge into model definitions. This research first proposes a methodology by which some of these issues may be overcome, and consequently tests and evaluates it through implementation of InSiM (Incident Simulation Model), which depicts reaction of pedestrians to a CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear) explosion in a city centre. A number of steps are conducted to obtain real-life information related to human response to CBRN incidents. This information is then used for design and parameterisation of InSiM which is implemented in three configurations. In order to identify the effects use of real-life data have on the simulation results each configuration incorporates the information at different level of complexity. The effects are assessed by comparison of the generated dispersion patterns of agents along the city centre. However, use of conventional statistical goodness-of-fit tests for assessing the degree of the difference was challenged by inhomogeneous nature of the data. Hence, alternative approaches are also adopted so that results can be qualitatively assessed. Nevertheless, the evaluation reveals significant differences at global and local level. This research highlights that incorporation of real-life information and domain knowledge into ABM is not without problems. Each time a problem was addressed, additional issues began to emerge. Most of these challenges were related to generalisation of the complex real-life systems that the model represents. Therefore, further investigations are needed at every methodological step before ABM can fully realise its potential to support disaster management.

The concept of smart city offers opportunities for such development to many middle sized cities of South Africa. Therefore, in this paper conceptual modelling for development of smart cities in South Africa is attempted based on systems concept. The conceptual models are built by using the principles of system dynamics methodology and based on causal feedback relationships among the various factors under different smart characteristics of a city such as, smart economy, smart people, smart governance, smart mobility, smart environment and smart living. The causal feedback loops and interrelationship among various parameters illustrate the dynamicity and influence of parameters on one another, which would able to assist in evolving plausible policy interventions for developing smart cities in South Africa. It is concluded that the modelling approaches presented here could guide the policy makers and city planners to evolve robust and responsive policy interventions for developing smart cities in the changing scenario.

The UK government aims at achieving 80% CO2 emission reduction by 2050 which requires collective efforts across all the UK industry sectors. In particular, the housing sector has a large potential to contribute to achieving the aim because the housing sector alone accounts for 27% of the total UK CO2 emission, and furthermore, 87% of the housing which is responsible for current 27% CO2 emission will still stand in 2050. Therefore, it is essential to improve energy efficiency of existing housing stock built with low energy efficiency standard. In order for this, a whole‐house needs to be refurbished in a sustainable way by considering the life time financial and environmental impacts of a refurbished house. However, the current refurbishment process seems to be challenging to generate a financially and environmentally affordable refurbishment solution due to the highly fragmented nature of refurbishment practice and a lack of knowledge and skills about whole‐house refurbishment in the construction industry. In order to generate an affordable refurbishment solution, diverse information regarding costs and environmental impacts of refurbishment measures and materials should be collected and integrated in right sequences throughout the refurbishment project life cycle among key project stakeholders. Consequently, various researchers increasingly study a way of utilizing Building Information Modelling (BIM) to tackle current problems in the construction industry because BIM can support construction professionals to manage construction projects in a collaborative manner by integrating diverse information, and to determine the best refurbishment solution among various alternatives by calculating the life cycle costs and lifetime CO2 performance of a refurbishment solution. Despite the capability of BIM, the BIM adoption rate is low with 25% in the housing sector and it has been rarely studied about a way of using BIM for housing refurbishment projects. Therefore, this research aims to develop a BIM framework to formulate a financially and environmentally affordable whole‐house refurbishment solution based on the Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods simultaneously. In order to achieve the aim, a BIM feasibility study was conducted as a pilot study to examine whether BIM is suitable for housing refurbishment, and a BIM framework was developed based on the grounded theory because there was no precedent research. After the development of a BIM framework, this framework was examined by a hypothetical case study using BIM input data collected from questionnaire survey regarding homeowners’ preferences for housing refurbishment. Finally, validation of the BIM framework was conducted among academics and professionals by providing the BIM framework and a formulated refurbishment solution based on the LCC and LCA studies through the framework. As a result, BIM was identified as suitable for housing refurbishment as a management tool, and it is timely for developing the BIM framework. The BIM framework with seven project stages was developed to formulate an affordable refurbishment solution. Through the case study, the Building Regulation is identified as the most affordable energy efficiency standard which renders the best LCC and LCA results when it is applied for whole‐house refurbishment solution. In addition, the Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard (FEES) is recommended when customers are willing to adopt high energy standard, and the maximum 60% of CO2 emissions can be reduced through whole‐house fabric refurbishment with the FEES. Furthermore, limitations and challenges to fully utilize BIM framework for housing refurbishment were revealed such as a lack of BIM objects with proper cost and environmental information, limited interoperability between different BIM software and limited information of LCC and LCA datasets in BIM system. Finally, the BIM framework was validated as suitable for housing refurbishment projects, and reviewers commented that the framework can be more practical if a specific BIM library for housing refurbishment with proper LCC and LCA datasets is developed. This research is expected to provide a systematic way of formulating a refurbishment solution using BIM, and to become a basis for further research on BIM for the housing sector to resolve the current limitations and challenges. Future research should enhance the BIM framework by developing more detailed process map and develop BIM objects with proper LCC and LCA Information.
