Abstract:
Autonomy of operations combined with decentralised management of data has given rise to a number of heterogeneous databases or information systems within an enterprise. These systems are often incompatible in structure as well as content and hence difficult to integrate. This thesis investigates the problem of heterogeneous database integration, in order to meet the increasing demand for obtaining meaningful information from multiple databases without disturbing local autonomy. In spite of heterogeneity, the unity of overall purpose within a common application domain, nevertheless, provides a degree of semantic similarity which manifests itself in the form of similar data structures and common usage patterns of existing information systems. This work introduces a conceptual integration approach that exploits the similarity in meta level information in existing systems and performs metadata mining on database objects to discover a set of concepts common to heterogeneous databases within the same application domain. The conceptual integration approach proposed here utilises the background knowledge available in database structures and usage patterns and generates a set of concepts that serve as a domain abstraction and provide a conceptual layer above existing legacy systems. This conceptual layer is further utilised by an information re-engineering framework that customises and packages information to reflect the unique needs of different user groups within the application domain. The architecture of the information re-engineering framework is based on an object-oriented model that represents the discovered concepts as customised application objects for each distinct user group.

Abstract:
A data warehouse is a giant information pot made by integrating data from different data sources. Its schema can easily become complicated in order to hold all historical data. This complexity can confuse end users. The Conceptual Integration Modeling (CIM) framework was proposed to bridge the gap between users and the schema by adding a user-defined conceptual layer. This thesis aims to fulfill the query processor component in the CIM framework. Traditional query languages like SQL require a relatively tough learning curve, which is too dynamic for business users. Instead we propose a new CIM query language and a query interface to work with the visual representation of the CIM framework. This query interface only focuses on user needs and hides unnecessary implementation details to the back end. Thus, it is easy for business users to pose queries. In addition, we also do some optimization on the query processor by selecting views to materialize. Our proposed algorithm can achieve the lower performance bound of 46.7% of the optimal solution.

Ekaterina, Guseva. "The Conceptual Integration Modelling Framework: Semantics and Query Answering." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/33464.

Abstract:
In the context of business intelligence (BI), the accuracy and accessibility of information consolidation play an important role. Integrating data from different sources involves its transformation according to constraints expressed in an appropriate language. The Conceptual Integration Modelling framework (CIM) acts as such a language. The CIM is aimed to allow business users to specify what information is needed in a simplified and comprehensive language. Achieving this requires raising the level of abstraction to the conceptual level, so that users are able to pose queries expressed in a conceptual query language (CQL). The CIM is comprised of three facets: an Extended Entity Relationship (EER) model (a high level conceptual model that is used to design databases), a conceptual schema against which users pose their queries, a relational multidimensional model that represents data sources, and mappings between the conceptual schema and sources. Such mappings can be specified in two ways: in the first scenario, the so-called global-as-view (GAV), the global schema is mapped to views over the relational sources by specifying how to obtain tuples of the global relation from tuples in the sources. In the second scenario, sources may contain less detailed information (a more aggregated data) so the local relations are defined as views over global relations that is called as local-as-view (LAV). In this thesis, we address the problem of expressibility and decidability of queries written in CQL. We first define the semantics of the CIM by translating the conceptual model so we could translate it into a set of first order sentences containing a class of conceptual dependencies (CDs) - tuple-generating dependencies (TGDs) and equality generating dependencies (EGDs), in addition to certain (first order) restrictions to express multidimensionality. Here a multidimensionality means that facts in a data warehouse can be described from different perspectives. The EGDs set the equality between tuples and the TGDs set the rule that two instances are in a subtype association (more precise definitions are given further in the thesis). We use a non-conflicting class of conceptual dependencies that guarantees a query's decidability. The non-conflicting dependencies avoid an interaction between TGDs and EGDs. Our semantics extend the existing semantics defined for extended entity relationship models to the notions of fact, dimension category, dimensional hierarchy and dimension attributes. In addition, a class of conceptual queries will be defined and proven to be decidable. A DL-Lite logic has been extensively used for query rewriting as it allows us to reduce the complexity of the query answering to AC0. Moreover, we present a query rewriting algorithm for the class of defined conceptual dependencies. Finally, we consider the problem in light of GAV and LAV approaches and prove the query answering complexities. The query answering problem becomes decidable if we add certain constraints to a well-known set of EGDs + TGDs dependencies to guarantee summarizability. The query answering problem in light of the global-as-a-view approach of mapping has AC0 data complexity and EXPTIME combined complexity. This problem becomes coNP hard if we are to consider it a LAV approach of mapping.

Abstract:
Conceptual development and conceptual change processes are described by a longitudinal study on preschool children’s conception of the earth. Conceptual change is often described as a causal process in which changes in an embraced system of beliefs result in a new system of beliefs. A normative line of research has been dominating the research field of conceptual change. There has been a search for specific conceptions that are missing in the learners’ reasoning or that prevent conceptual change from occur. Here, the learner’s capacity of reasoning is focused. The children’s reasoning is described in its own right (Driver & Easley, 1978). It is argued that conceptual change is to be understood as an intentional activity with regard to the learner, that is, what the learner is doing when trying to understand something. Children were interviewed annually from four to six years of age. There were 37 children participating, of which 29 were followed during all three years. The children were interviewed about their conceptions of the earth. The results directs the focus of conceptual change from specific conceptions to structural changes. The children processed a lot of conflicting information. However, there does not appear to be any specific conflict that causes the process of conceptual change to occur. Rather, conceptual change is about the reorganization of the sum total of beliefs and to find adequate contexts to which they relate. Conceptual change involves a simultaneous processing of information and complex conception as well as revisions and changes at a model level, and all of this processing is related to contexts for description and explanation. The result also indicates some core stability in reasoning over the course of the investigation.

De, Alwis Brian. "Supporting conceptual queries over integrated sources of program information." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/695.

Full text
Abstract:
A software developer explores a software system by asking and answering a series of questions. To answer these questions, a developer may need to consult various sources providing information about the program, such as the static relationships expressed directly in the source code, the run-time behaviour of a program recorded in a dynamic trace, or evolution history as recorded in a source management system. Despite the support afforded by software exploration tools, developers often struggle to find the necessary information to answer their questions and may even become disoriented, where they feel mentally lost and are uncertain of what they were trying to accomplish. This dissertation advances a thesis that a developer's questions, which we refer to as conceptual queries, can be better supported through a model to represent and compose different sources of information about a program. The basis of this model is the sphere, which serves as a simple abstraction of a source of information about a program. Many of the software exploration tools used by a developer can be represented as a sphere. Spheres can be composed in a principled fashion such that information from a sphere may replace or supplement information from a different sphere. Using our sphere model, for example, a developer can use dynamic runtime information from an execution trace to replace information from the static source code to see what actually occurred. We have implemented this model in a configurable tool, called Ferret. We have used the facilities provided by the model to implement 36 conceptual queries identified from the literature, blogs, and our own experience, and to support the integration of four different sources of program information. Establishing correspondences between similar elements from different spheres allows a query to bridge across different spheres in addition to allowing a tool's user interface to drive queries from other sources of information. Through this effort we show that sphere model broadens the set of possible conceptual queries answerable by software exploration tools. Through a small diary study and a controlled experiment, both involving professional software developers, we found the developers used the conceptual queries that were available to them and reported finding Ferret useful.

Abstract:
The increasing demand of more economical and environmentally friendly aero engines leads to the proposal of a new concept – geared turbofan. In this thesis, the characteristics of this kind of engine and relevant considerations of integration on a flying wing aircraft were studied. The studies can be divided into four levels: GTF-11 engine modelling and performance simulation; aircraft performance calculation; nacelle design and aerodynamic performance evaluation; preliminary engine installation. Firstly, a geared concept engine model was constructed using TURBOMATCH software. Based on parametric analysis and SFC target, the main cycle parameters were selected. Then, the maximum take-off thrust was verified and corrected from 195.56kN to 212kN to meet the requirements of take-off field length and second segment climb. Besides, the engine performance at offdesign points was simulated for aircraft performance calculation. Secondly, an aircraft performance model was developed and the performance of FW-11 was calculated on the basis of GTF-11 simulation results. Then, the effect of GTF-11 characteristics performance on aircraft performance was evaluated. A comparison between GTF-11 and conventional turbofan, RB211- 524B4, indicated that the aircraft can achieve a 13.1% improvement in fuel efficiency by using the new concept engine. Thirdly, a nacelle was designed for GTF-11 based on NACA 1-series and empirical methods while the nacelle dimensions of conventional turbofan RB211-525B4 were obtained by measure approach. Then, the installation thrust losses caused by nacelle drags of the two engines were evaluated using ESDU 81024a. The results showed that the nacelle drags account for about 4.08% and 3.09% of net thrust for GTF-11 and RB211-525B4, respectively. Finally, the considerations of engine installation on a flying wing aircraft were discussed and a preliminary disposition of GTF-11 on FW-11 was presented.

Abstract:
Schema integration is the task of integrating several local schemata into one global database schema. It is a complex, error-prone and time consuming task. Problems arise in recognizing and resolving problems, such as differences and similarities, between two schemata. Problems also arise in integrating static and dynamic schemata. In this thesis, three research topics are addressed: Maintaining Vocabulary in Schema Integration, Integration of Static Schemata and Integration of Static and Dynamic Schemata, while applying the notation in the Enterprise Modeling approach. In Maintaining Vocabulary in Schema Integration an analysis of what semantic loss is and why it occurs in schema integration is conducted. Semantic loss is a problem that should be avoided because both concepts and dependencies might be lost. In the thesis, it is argued that concepts and dependencies should be retained as long as possible in the schemata. This should facilitate user involvement since the users’ vocabulary is retained even after resolving similarities and differences between two schemata. In Integration of Static Schemata two methods are developed. These methods facilitate recognition and resolution of similarities and differences between two conceptual database schemata.  By applying the first method, problems between two schemata can be recognized that otherwise could pass unnoticed; by applying the second method, problems can be resolved without causing semantic loss by retaining concepts and dependencies in the schemata. In Integration of Static and Dynamic Schemata a method on how to integrate static and dynamic schemata is developed. In the method, focus is put on pre- and post-conditions and how to map these to states and state changes in the database. By applying the method, states that are important for the database can be designed and integrated into the conceptual database schema. Also, by applying the method, active database rules can be designed and integrated into the conceptual database schema.

Abstract:
The majority of touch-enabled musical production software tend to use metaphors from professional musical studio environments in their interface (e.g., a rackmount, turntables plus a crossfader, or a keyboard) or simply use single-finger input as a computer mouse. We identify a need for musical software that benefits from novel graphical user interface elements and innovative metaphors to provide control over pre-recorded music. We hypothesize that a software design approach using conceptual integration, or blending, will lead to new ludic interfaces for musical expression with the potential to facilitate DJ tasks. Multi-touch technology offers the promise of going beyond traditional mouse-based user interfaces, and is especially pertinent in that it provides full embodiment: the user interacts directly with the visual feedback of the system. This change in paradigm has implications in software design, not yet fully understood in tools for musical expression. This thesis first documents the existing methods of implementing multi-touch technology, before suggesting a taxonomy of multi-touch devices. A literature review of multi-touch systems for musical applications is also presented, after which metaphor and blending (also known as conceptual integration) are discussed. We apply blending to software design for multi-touch musical software and introduce our programming framework, TactoSonix.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the study of how sketch-based systems can be improved to enhance idea generation process in conceptual design stage. It is also concerned with achieving a kind of integration between sketch-based systems and CAD systems to complete the digitization of the design process as sketching phase is still not integrated with other phases due to the different nature of it and the incomplete digitization of sketching phase itself. Previous studies identified three main related issues: sketching process, sketch-based modeling, and the integration between the digitized design phases. Here, the thesis is motivated from the desire to improve sketch-based modeling to support idea generation process but unlike previous studies that only focused on the technical or drawing part of sketching, this thesis attempts to concentrate more on the mental part of the sketching process which play a key role in developing ideas in design. Another motivation of this thesis is to produce a kind of integration between sketch-based systems and CAD systems to enable 3D models produced by sketching to be edited in detailed design stage. As such, there are two main contributions have been addressed in this thesis. The first contribution is the presenting of a new approach in designing sketch-based systems that enable more support for idea generation by separating thinking and developing ideas from the 3D modeling process. This kind of separation allows designers to think freely and concentrate more on their ideas rather than 3D modeling. the second contribution is achieving a kind of integration between gesture-based systems and CAD systems by using an IGES file in exchanging data between systems and a new method to organize data within the file in an order that make it more understood by feature recognition embedded in commercial CAD systems.

Abstract:
Conceptual Integration addresses the dynamicity of language as an interactive and situated phenomenon. This theory accounts for the productivity of new emergent structures in language. Taking into account that jokes are a prototypical discursive form which can be easily be differentiated intuitively, it is stated that jokes have not been properly differentiated from other linguistic structures, in the sense that their funny element has not been profiled in Blending Theory. This dissertation proposes a new conceptual schema in order to provide a novel model which includes funniness in jokes. Henceforth, this work hypothesizes the presence of a second generic space in jokes, which categorizes a non-entrenched feature which works as the basis of the humorous quality of jokes. In the attempt to properly test this novel schema, 30 jokes were analyzed following Conceptual Blending theory, with the addition of the new generic space. After the specific analysis of each joke, the success of the schema was measured with quantitative analysis. The results showed that for all the jokes from the sample presented a proposed Ad hoc Generic Space and a Conceptual one, that seem to support the hypothesis of its duality. Furthermore, a Blended Space was achieved via mappings of inputs for every joke and non-humorous blends using the same inputs could be constructed only for the jokes labelled as verbal.

Abstract:
Specification for process oriented applications tends to use languages that suffer from infinite, intractable or unpredictably irregular state spaces that thwart exhaustive searches by verification heuristics. However, conceptual schemas based on FOL, offer techniques for both integrating and verifying specifications in finite spaces. It is therefore of interest to transform process based specifications into conceptual schemata. Process oriented languages have an additional drawback in that reliable inputs to the integration of diverse specifications can result in unreliable outputs. This problem can more easily be addressed in a logic representation in which static and dynamic properties can be examined separately. The first part of the text describes a translation method from the process based language SDL, to first order logic. The usefulness of the method for industrial application has been demonstrated in an implementation. The method devised is sufficiently general for application to other languages with similar characteristics. Main contributions consist of: formalising the mapping of state transitions to event driven rules in dynamic entity-relationship schemas; analysing the complexity of various approaches to decomposing transitions; a conceptual representation of the source language that distinguishes meta- and object models of the source language and domain respectively. The second part of the text formally describes a framework for the integration of schemata that allows the exploration of their properties in relation to each other and to a set of integration assertions. The main contributions are the formal framework; an extension to conflicts between agents in a temporal action logic; complexity estimates for various integration properties.

Abstract:
The integration of data issued from autonomous and heterogeneous sources is still a significant problem for an important number of applications. In the oil and gas industry, a large amount of data is generated every day from multiple sources such as seismic data, well data, drilling data, transportation data, and marketing data. However, these data are acquired by the application of different techniques and represented in different standards and formats. Thus, these data exist in a structured form in databases, and in semi-structured forms in spreadsheets and documents such as reports and multimedia collections. To deal with this large amount of information, as well as the heterogeneous data formats of the data, the information needs to be standardized and integrated across systems, disciplines and organizational boundaries. As a result, this information integration will enable better decision making within collaborations, once high quality data will be accessible timely. The petroleum industry depends on the efficient use of these data to the construction of computer models in order to simplify the geological reality and to help understanding it. Such a model, which contains geological objects analyzed by different professionals – geologists, geophysicists and engineers – does not represent the reality itself, but the expert’s conceptualization. As a result, the geological objects modeled assume distinct semantic representations and complementary in supporting decision-making. For keeping the original intended meanings, ontologies were used for expliciting the semantic of the models and for integrating the data and files generated in the various stages of the exploration chain. The major claim of this work is that interoperability among earth models built and manipulated by different professionals and systems can be achieved by making apparent the meaning of the geological objects represented in the models. We show that domain ontologies developed with support of theoretical background of foundational ontologies show to be an adequate tool to clarify the semantic of geology concepts. We exemplify this capability by analyzing the communication standard formats most used in the modeling chain (LAS,WITSML, and RESQML), searching for entities semantically related with the geological concepts described in ontologies for Geosciences. We show how the notions of identity, rigidity, essentiality and unity applied to ontological concepts lead the modeler to more precisely define the geological objects in the model. By making explicit the identity properties of the modeled objects, the modeler who applies data standards can overcome the ambiguities of the geological terminology. In doing that, we clarify which are the relevant objects and properties that can be mapped from one model to another, even when they are represented with different names and formats.

With Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) companies are facing a paradigm shift towards services as the key unit of their enterprise architectures. An exploitation of the potential of Service-oriented Architectures is up to the applicability of semi-formal business models for a transformation into service compositions. However, several conceptual shortcomings prevent semi-formal models from being a suitable resource of an automated transformation process. Problems result from a multitude of modeling aims, objects, and procedures. Enhancements in order to solve these problems require both systematic preparation, and a methodical approach. This thesis provides a modeling method for business process-oriented SOA design using a meta-model based approach. An integrated modeling environment gives an overview of business requirements and allows appropriate assignment of SOA services to the business functions at the same time. The research refers to the example of process-oriented analysis and optimization of administrative procedures in German universities

Ramji, Zubeida. "Beyond Transition: Understanding Workplace Integration of Internationally Educated Nurses - A Qualitative Case Study." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/34753.

Full text
Abstract:
Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) have been proposed as one solution to dealing with the nursing shortage in Canada. In addition to helping sustain the profession, IENs are reflective of the diverse patient populations in Canada. Investments will ensure healthy workplaces for and retention of IENs. There has been a growing interest about IENs’ experiences with migration and navigating through the regulatory process, but research on their post-transition experience is lacking. Workplace integration for IENs is not well understood and the role of the employer has received limited focus. Guided by critical social theory, an instrumental qualitative case study approach was used to examine a single organization, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, with a history of supporting IENs. A purposeful sample of twenty-eight participants included diverse IENs who were post-transition, and stakeholders from various vantage points. Four forms of data collection were used: semi-structured interviews; socio-demographic survey; review of documents and focus groups. Thematic analysis was carried out to form a within subcase analysis first, followed by an across subcase analysis. The major themes are: (a) when “integrated”, an IEN is (i) being a “Canadian nurse with international experience”; (ii) progressing on the leadership journey; and (iii) persevering in overcoming challenges; (b) organizational factors that influence workplace integration of IEN are (i) workforce diversity; (ii) leadership commitment to equity; (iii) policies promoting equity principles; (iv) engagement with the broader community; and (v) avoiding common pitfalls. This research offers a definition and conceptual framework where workplace integration of IENs is a “two-way” process within an inclusive and valuing context, producing changes both at the IEN as well as organizational levels.

Abstract:

Throughout the development of this report there will be a brief explanation of what the actual Aircraft Design Process is and in which stages the methodology that the authors are proposing will be implemented as well as the tools that will interact to produce this methodology.

The proposed tool will be the first part of a methodology that, according to the authors, by integrating separate tools that are currently used in different stages of the aeronautical design, will promote a decrease in the time frame for the initial stages of the design process.

The first part of the methodology above, that is proposed in this project, starts by creating a computer generated aircraft model and analyzing its basic aerodynamic characteristics “Lift Coefficient” and “Induced Drag Coefficient”, this step will be an alternative to statistical and empirical methods used in the industry, which require vast amount of data.

This task will be done in several steps, which will transfer the parametric aircraft model to an input file for the aerodynamic analysis program. To transfer the data a “translation” program has been developed that arranges the geometry and prepares the input file for analysis.

During the course of this report the reader will find references to existing aircrafts, such as the MD-11 or Airbus 310. However, these references are not intended to be an exact computer model of the mentioned airplanes. The authors are using this as reference so the reader can relate what he/she is seeing in this paper to existing aircrafts. By doing such comparison, the author intends to demonstrate that the Parametric Model that has been created possesses the capability to simulate to some extend the shape of existing aircrafts.

Finally from the results of this project it is concluded that the methodology in question is promising. Linking the two programs is possible and the aerodynamic characteristics of the models tested fall in the appropriate range. None the less the research must continue following the line that has been discussed in this report.

Abstract:
We are currently witnessing a constant increase in the presence of renewable energies in the urban environment, especially solar energy. This inevitably causes a visual impact that is not always socially accepted. The main theme of this thesis is the aesthetic perception of solar installations integrated into the city and establishes an elementary conceptual framework that includes several relevant lines of research. A first line analyses the most influential objective factors in the aesthetic impact produced by these facilities. The second line delves into the subjective perception experienced by the individual. And finally, within the European geographical framework, it studies the degree of involvement of entities that carry out projects to implement renewable energies in the city, in the aesthetic impact that these projects generate. The results of the research have repercussions on society and on the processes of implementing renewable energies.

"Conceptual design and simulated operation of economies of scope and scale manufacturing enterprises." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8300.

Full text
Abstract:
Much of industry is seeking scope economies, but this requires more complex and flexible product realisation. Modelling technologies have potential to support the life cycle engineering of both Economies of Scope and Scale (EoSS) manufacturing systems. However when companies operate in dynamic environments it is not sufficient to model manufacturing systems in isolation. Rather a holistic modelling methodology is needed which can create structural and behavioural models of dependencies between the manufacturing systems, and the business and engineering environments in which they operate; so that a suitable balance between economies of scope and scale can be achieved. This thesis describes the conception and development of a step wised Extended Modelling Methodology (EMM) which facilitates reasoning, and related decision making, about EoSS manufacturing systems. The EMM was conceived from exploratory research in two SMEs, following which it was applied and case tested in a large manufacturing company. Little academic attention to date has been paid to theorising about the link between ‘Economies of Scope and Scale (EoSS) phenomenon' and ‘manufacturing systems design'. Hence many questions about EoSS manufacturing remain unanswered, such as: (1) academic communities need to know what EoSS actually means and how state-of-the-art modelling can support qualitative and quantitative analysis of EoSS system phenomenon; and (2) industry needs to know how they can benefit from EoSS, what attended costs they might incur, and what best balance between scope and scale economies can be achieved. With these general requirements in mind the thesis reports on the conception and industrial application of the EMM. This has: (A) developed new ideas about EoSS, which can be used to characterise EoSS phenomenon; (B) introduced a new way of visualising architectural aspects of EoSS at multiple-levels of abstraction; and (C) with reference to case studies has illustrated the use of multi-level modelling to enable predictions to be made about EoSS benefits and costs.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to knowledge in the form of a new theory for supply chain strategy formulation. The objective is to design evaluation criteria, specific to the context of greenfield project architecture and integration design. This study addressed the aim and objective by synthesising existing methods and techniques which are outlined into a research framework of supply chain strategy problems. The study applied the case study and action research methods to pursue conceptual validity from the process of investigating the supply chain strategy formulation in a specific situation and presented the data collection and analysis process. The thesis derived a conceptual framework for investigating and identifying the relationship between multiple elements, dimensions, forces and factors that influence and affect supply chain strategy formulation in a greenfield project context, specific to the mining industry. The contribution to knowledge emerged from building upon the architecture of the conceptual framework, through synthesising existing techniques and adapting these techniques, to extend and redefine the existing knowledge on the practice of supply chain strategy formulation. Through critical analysis, a number of critical problems emerged and the process of addressing these problems, resulted with a new framework for evaluating the relationship between business and supply chain strategy, specific to greenfield project and integration context. The contribution to knowledge also derived from addressing the emerging obstacles in the process of identifying, defining and formulating, the visions and goals of individual supply chain participants from implicit into an explicit form. The process synthesised the knowledge for conceptualising the idea, through developing and evaluating information and issues, to derive insights into the complex and abstract concept, of greenfield project business and supply chain strategy formulation. The conceptual framework and evaluation framework advanced into designing greenfield project supply chain integration strategy. The process involved categorising individual supply chain strategic interests, decisions and problems into formulation areas, and was aimed at defining the process of greenfield project integration strategy as a system of concepts containing formulation areas, formulation principles, segregated into subcategories of formulation imperatives and formulation concepts. The thesis contributed to knowledge with advancement of the design engineering method, which enables visualisation of the supply chain strategy evaluation process. The design is not personalised for individual company business strategy or supply chain strategy formulation. The method was personalised to evaluate the integration of individual goals, and concepts in a supply chain strategy formulation. The novelty that emerged from the thesis was a conceptual framework for greenfield project architecture and integration design. The greenfield project architecture and design derived in the thesis a proposed conceptual system for applying the conceptual framework and the evaluation criteria.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines genericity from a textual perspective. The material consists of popular science texts about species of animals. The investigation concerns both the distribution of different forms of generic noun phrases and the boundary between generic and non-generic noun phrases. The analytical tools are taken from Accessibility Theory and Blending Theory. Two separate studies have been undertaken. The results of the first study indicate that generic reference on the whole follows the same principles of accessibility as non-generic reference, although there are some differences that can be attributed to the distinction between generic and non-generic reference. Some results suggest that our mental representations of generic referents are generally less accessible than those of non-generic referents. Factors other than accessibility influencing the choice of generic noun phrases are also identified. While genericity is generally treated as an all-or-nothing phenomenon, an important experience of this first study concerns the difficulties facing anyone who tries to distinguish between generic and non-generic noun phrases in authentic texts. These difficulties are the centre of attention in the second study, which shows that genericity is an extremely context-dependent phenomenon. The sentence context may clearly indicate a particular, non-generic reference, while the wider context of the text reveals that the noun phrase in question is in fact generic. Not infrequently, chains of reference involve a great deal of shifting and slithering between a generic and a non-generic meaning, although the references are seemingly coreferential. It is sometimes difficult to decide on the real referents intended. At times there are also clear cases where the noun phrase must be analysed as referring to both generic and non-generic entities at the same time. This implies that it is unlikely that we actually decide for every reference if it is generic or non-generic.

Abstract:
This dissertation intends to study the metaphors generated in journalistic corpus in the 90s, which is part of the Projeto Observatório de Neologismos do Português Brasileiro Contemporâneo (TermNeo). Thus, we have selected among the neologic lexical units of semantic tenor, the metaphoric formations that compound our study. This aims to do an interpreting analysis of the metaphor under the optics of cognitive linguistics. In this manner, we have taken into account to our analysis that the metaphor is a cognoscitive activity and is present in the various discoureses produced in human activities, as well as it permeates our everyday. It is about a cognoscitive activity which evidence is seen in the natural language we use to communicate and, as well, produce knowledge. Our analysis has that Conceptual Integration Theory as its basis offered by Fauconnier in his postulates from 1997 and is being amplified and improved in association with Turner and his collaborators. To the author, the metaphor constitutes a conceptual phenomenon, as well as a mental projection instrument. This theory is bases in the Mental Spaces Theory of Fauconnier that seeks to explain how speakers and listeners register conceptual correspondence and, also, build new inferences during the speech. The authors defend that the process of instauration of the metaphor starts in the relations between mental spaces. We have applied the cited theory in metaphoric formations present in the chosen corpus and verified that it is of extreme importance for metaphor studies. The result of our analysis confirms that the metaphor is a conceptual phenomenon and a mental projection instrument.

Abstract:
The Higher Education (HE) sector of a country is a key area indicating the progress of cultural, political and social growth and development. Public and social demands as well as technological developments add new challenges for this sector. Consequently, higher education institutions have changed and a more flexible IT infrastructure is required to enable them to adapt efficiently to competitive business challenges. Enterprise application integration (EAI) is a technology that effectively integrates intra- and inter-organizational systems. Firstly a systematic review of the EAI literature was conducted. From this review, it was apparent that there are no theoretical models for EAI adoption and evaluation for higher education. Hence, this research contributes a conceptual model that includes influential factors derived from the literature and combines them with the proposed classification of influential factors for HE to produce an EAI conceptual model for the HE domain. To validate this proposed model empirical research was conducted. Then, the model was tested using a qualitative case study approach by means of three case studies that were conducted at different universities. Exploratory, explanatory and interpretive data analysis phases were implemented to find what is the current EAI process of HE and how these institutions currently work. In addition, these phases were employed to identify the EAI adoption factors in HE. As a result of this analysis the conceptual model was modified because of complementary factors that emerged. Therefore, the main contribution of this research is a comprehensive and novel model for EAI adoption in higher education area. The adoption EAI factors were identified by extracting a number of parameters from the empirical data. Several important factors that influence and assist the adoption of EAI in HE were identified. Hence, an additional contribution is the classification of factors in EAI adoption into technical and social factors which provides a better understanding of these factors. A further contribution is the derivation of a new classification of the EAI external and internal pressure factors. The development of a consistent model for the adoption and evaluation of EAI in HE is based on these factors.

Abstract: This dissertation aims at employing the theory of Cognitive Linguistics, spe-cially the image schema and the conceptual integration frameworks to analyze the ex-cerpts where the relationship between Riobaldo e Diadorim is explored by Guimarães Rosa in Grande Sertão: Veredas. According to this theory, image schemas are the basic elements that underlie language performance, structuring preconceptually our world bodily experience; they are also employed in literature and, according to Mark Turner (1996), constitutes an excellent resource for creating meaning effects in literary texts. Accordingly metaphorical projections of crossing structured by image schemas analyzed in this title by Guimarães Rosa are object of special interest, inasmuch they are seen by present neuroscience as an organizer principle of thought and human crea-tivity. Therefore, by employing SOURCE-PATH-GOAL and FORCE DYNAMICS image schemas, this work seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of the applicability of those schemas as a base for understanding aspects of Grande Sertão: Veredas, par-ticularly the ones reported above

Abstract:
Dental schools are faced with the challenge of incorporating varied instructional methodologies into their curriculum. Various dental schools distinguish different modules in their program under preclinical and clinical disciplines with minimal connections between the two. This study investigated students' perceptions of their curriculum and, more specifically, compare and contrast dental students' perceptions of learning during the first or freshman years, the second or junior years, and the third years as seniors in 2005, 2006, and 2007. It contrasts the results from students' perceptions and students' actual learning to establish correlations between these two phenomena. Various standard assessments were used. Students' understanding of the use of dental materials including base, liner, and cement were measured as predicting factors to substantiate the accuracy of the students' perceptions. A questionnaire was used to elicit a total of 853 responses over the three consecutive years. Pearson correlations were applied to analyze the data. The main finding was a positive correlation between the accuracy of students perceptions of learning and their participation in clinical practice; whereas no correlation was confirmed with regard to the accuracy of students' perceptions of learning when students had only or primarily participated in preclinical courses. The results suggest that advanced students' perceptions and knowledge can be considered by faculty when making decisions regarding reform of their dental curriculum

Abstract:
This thesis aims at presenting a study of uses of demonstration in a narrative in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). The analysis of the elements involved in the use of demonstrations along the narrative is based on a multimodal approach. In order to describe the multimodality in face-to-face interaction, I have used models put forward by Clark (1996) and Hutchins (2010). These authors suggest that participants in any interaction coordinate themselves to perform joint activities. According to that approach, demonstration crucially involves two aspects: i) the ability to coordinate the joint imagination of elements of the narrative such as scenarios, characters, actions, events, etc; and ii) the use of the body, different kinds of gesture and the space as tools during that construct the imaginative act in the interaction. For the study of demonstrations in signed discourses, specifically, I based my analyses on Liddell (2003) and Dudis (2007), who described the use of demonstration in discourses in American Sign Language, and on McCleary & Viotti (2010, 2011, 2014), who analyzed narratives in Libras. Based on these authors, it was possible to observe: i) the uses of demonstrations are different levels of narrative discourse; ii) the relevance of taking into account the narrator level to the analysis of uses of demonstration. The analyzed narrative entitled Ping Pong ball was transcribed using the software ELAN, following the model proposed in McCleary, Viotti & Leite (2010). The analysis implies that demonstration is a central discursive strategy in signed narratives, and that, to a great extent, fluency in signing stories involves the ability to use demonstrations, integrated with other narrative strategies.

This dissertation aims at employing the theory of Cognitive Linguistics, spe-cially the image schema and the conceptual integration frameworks to analyze the ex-cerpts where the relationship between Riobaldo e Diadorim is explored by Guimarães Rosa in Grande Sertão: Veredas.

Abstract:
Reactive distillation involves complexities on process dynamics, control and supervision. This work proposes a methodology integrating controllability and diagnosability as from conceptual design. The choice of the most appropriate feasible configuration is conducted though an indices-based method, regarding steady-state and dynamic simulations, for the ethyl acetate production. Experimental campaigns were performed to acquire reliable models. The methodology highlights the process sensitivities and shows that three degrees of freedom of the double-feed column can be manipulated to ensure the industrial specifications; the controlled variables are selected at similar specific locations for all column configurations. Concerning diagnosis, the use of composition sensors seems to be the most appropriate solution, but the same performances can be reached with more temperature sensors judiciously placed

Tovar, Esau. "A Conceptual Model on the Impact of Mattering, Sense of Belonging, Engagement/Involvement, and Socio-Academic Integrative Experiences on Community College Students’ Intent to Persist." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cgu_etd/81.

Abstract:
Community colleges continue to experience high levels of student attrition and low degree/certificate completion rates. Given extant literature, there appears to be a need to reexamine how interactions between students and the institution, and students and institutional agents are taking place, with the aim of identifying institutional practices that deleteriously or positively impact degree completion and thus guide colleges to develop action plans to improve conditions for student success. This study examined how factors such as institutional commitment to students, mattering, sense of belonging, interactions with diverse peers, perceptions of the campus climate, engagement/involvement, socio-academic integrative experiences, and goal commitment collectively affected community college students’ intent to persist to degree completion. The proposed model tested the tenability of seven propositions examining how the above constructs interact to influence intent to persist. The sample consisted of 2,088 multiply diverse community college students. The conceptual model was grounded on Astin’s (1991) Input-Environment-Outcome model and was tested in the context of structural equation modeling. Multiple group invariance analyses for race/ethnicity were conducted. The conceptual model explained 28% of the variance on intent to persist for Asian students, 21% for White students, and 19% for Latino/a students. Results indicated that transition support from family/friends exerted the highest effect on intent to persist across all racial/ethnic groups, followed by engagement/involvement, perceptions of mattering, interactions with diverse peers, GPA, goal commitment, and socio-academic integrative experiences, albeit varying by group. This study was the first in the literature to empirically demonstrate a causal effect between institutional commitment to students and perceptions of mattering. Mattering, in turn, exerted a moderate to strong influence on engagement/involvement, socio-academic integrative experiences, sense of belonging, and indirectly on intent to persist. Evidence in support of an omnibus “student development and success” construct, as alluded to by Wolf-Wendel, et al. (2009) is also presented. Of import to these findings is that while this construct explained a significant proportion of the variance for engagement/involvement, belonging, mattering, and interactions with diverse peers, the individual factors exerted an independent effect on intent to persist. Implications for theory, research, and practice are also discussed.

In this work, we propose a description of complement constructions concerning a functional-cognitive approach. This research was motivated by problems related to grammar teaching, which is tightly associated to language structure and formal description. A corpus with narrative texts (novels, short stories and newspaper news) and argumentation texts (opinion articles, popular science texts and academic papers) was composed for the study of complement constructions. Among the subordinate constructions found in the corpus, the most frequent were the ones in which the predicator of the main clause was an elocution verb, a mental verb and the expression “be + adjective”, therefore, the clauses in the position of direct object and subject. According to Functional Discourse Grammar assumptions (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008) and the cognitive theory of Conceptual Integration (FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002), we observed some subjective aspects encoded by these syntactic constructions, motivated by Speaker‟s communicative intentions and by the way he/she conceptualizes the world around him. In pragmatic terms, the complement clauses we studied correspond to Speaker‟s strategies to demonstrate his commitment degree with what he‟s saying, protecting his/her face, and also assuring the information‟s reliability; in linguistic terms, they show the language suffers some adaptations (BYBEE, 2010) to serve Speaker‟s communicative needs. Concerning grammar teaching – especially syntax teaching – we believe that the focus in the functionality of these constructions can make its teaching richer and more efficient

Abstract:
It is widely recognised that information and communication technologies development is a risky activity. Despite the advances in software engineering, many software development projects fail to satisfy the clients' needs, to deliver on time or to stay within budget. Among the various factors that are considered to cause failure, an inadequate requirements practice stands out. Model-driven development is a relatively recent paradigm with the potential to solve some of the dragging problems of software development. Models play a paramount role in model-driven development: several modelling layers allow defining views of the system under construction at different abstraction levels, and model transformations facilitate the transition from one layer to the other. However, how to effectively integrate requirements engineering within model-driven development is still an open research challenge. This thesis integrates Communication Analysis, a communication-oriented business process modelling and requirements engineering method for information systems development, and the OO Method, an object-oriented model-driven software development method provides automatic software generation from conceptual models. We first provide a detailed specification of Communication Analysis intended to facilitate the integration; among other improvements to the method, we build an ontology-based set of concept definitions in which to ground the method, we provide precise methodological guidelines, we create a metamodel for the modelling languages included in the method, and we provide tools to support the creation of Communication Analysis requirements models. Then we perform the integration by providing a technique to systematically derive OO-Method conceptual models from Communication Analysis requirements models. The derivation technique is offered in two flavours: a set of rules to be manually applied by a human analyst, and an ATL model transformation that automates this task.

Abstract:
Art and music have since time immemorial been closely related. The analysis of resources conducted in the first part of the thesis revealed analogies between these two forms of art determined in the course of the history of Western Europe. Art and music in ancient times, the medieval period, and modern times have shared not only a common artistic style, but have also usually had common philosophical, religious, and aesthetic objectives that in time resulted in various forms of affinity and analogies between these forms of art. Art and music in ancient times had symbolic associations that were combined in the area of education in the Middle Ages, came into contact in the science studying these two forms of art in modern times, and, subsequently, in postmodern culture, joined in new integrated works of art. Consequently, in addition to a historical determination of analogies between art and music, the second part of the paper discusses the integrational nature of contemporary arts, analyses the dissemination of contemporary arts, and new art forms. Newly emerged integrated arts have changed the principles of the theoretical analysis, therefore these principles are also discussed in the thesis. Contemporary arts combining music and art and new methods for the study of such arts are treated as both a premise and necessity for the integrated learning of these arts. The third part of the thesis explores the Contemporary Art Programme intended for pupils of grades 9–12 as an... [to full text]

Abstract:

Development of modern aircraft has become more and more expensive and time consuming. In order to minimize the development cost, an improvement of the conceptual design phase is needed. The desired goal of the project is to enhance the functionality of an in house produced framework conducted at the department of machine design, consisting of parametric models representing a large variety of aircraft concepts.

The first part of the work consists of the construction of geometric aircraft control surfaces such as flaps, aileron, rudder and elevator parametrically in CATIA V5.

The second part of the work involves designing and simulating an Inverse dynamic model in Dymola software.

An Excel interface has been developed between CATIA and Dymola. Parameters can be varied in the interface as per user specification; these values are sent to CATIA or Dymola and vice versa. The constructed concept model of control surfaces has been tested for different aircraft shapes and layout. The simulation has been done in Dymola for the control surfaces.
