Abstract:
Windows are an essential part of almost every civil building. The existing approach for designing windows is based on ensuring minimum requirements to provide natural lighting functions, thermal protection, etc. This approach does not take into account the interrelationship of certain technical characteristics of windows (for example, heat and lighting characteristics). This leads to the appearance of typical problems at the stage of operating the building (insufficient day light, poor ventilation, etc.). In this work, an analysis of functional and technical requirements of windows of civil buildings was conducted. The review of modern researches of optimal window designs and interrelation of certain technical characteristics of window between themselves was conducted. On the basis of this analysis, the concept of a new complex window design method was proposed. This method is based on the fact that windows are both bearing and enclosing elements of the building. The use of this method will create the standard design solutions of windows for civil buildings of different functional purposes and different climatic areas of construction.

Abstract:
AbstractAdditive Manufacturing (AM) brought new design freedom and possibilities that enable design and manufacturing of products with new forms and functionalities. To utilise these possibilities a new design approach emerged, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM), that contains methods and tools for supporting AM oriented design process. Designers working with AM are aware of the need to apply DfAM and AM possibilities in conceptual design phase where they have the most significant influence on product architecture and form but are facing a lack of suitable DfAM approaches for early design phases. Therefore, the presented research is investigating possibilities of storing and representing AM knowledge in the form of design principles to be used in the conceptual design phase. The paper proposes conceiving of Design Principles for Additive Manufacturing repository where formalised AM knowledge is stored in the form of design principles and structured based on function criteria. In the paper, various elements of design principle representation are discussed, as well as their role in the conceptual design process.

Abstract:
Teacher beliefs for conceptualisations of feedback should facilitate pupil development. However, to what extent does the conception of feedback in assessment for learning influence pupil aspirations as commanded by the Malaysian Education Development Plan? Thus, this study is conducted to explore the degree of influence of the conceptions of feedback factors on Pupil Aspiration. A survey research design is used in this study using a self-report inventory on feedback conceptions and pupil aspirations. The participants involved are 490 student teachers who have completed their teaching practical in the government schools in their previous semester. The feedback conception inventory adapted from the Teacher Conceptions of Feedback (TCoF) is used to measure the conception of feedback and the instrument for Pupil Aspiration is developed by the researchers. A structural equation modelling software, the Analysis of Moment Structures was used to test the hypothesized relationship. The analysis involves two-stage approach. Results of the study indicated that the proposed model was supported, and thus revealing that feedback conceptions was associated with Pupil Aspirations. Ten inter-correlated constructs had good psychometric properties. All the nine constructs of feedback conceptions loaded positively on pupil aspirations. The findings will give rise to further hypotheses which could close the gap of the research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper, earthquake-resistance behaviors of existing masonry structures are evaluated based on a certain masonry building. The existing masonry structure is evaluated in its defects of primary design and construction measurements, seismic bearing capacity and durability. Based on results of evaluation, the seismic reinforcement design is introduced for improving earthquake-resistance behaviors of the whole building and its weak positions. In the seismic reinforcement concept design, the ductility of the masonry structure is improved in bearing seismic loading and plastic deformation. Further more, the masonry building is reinforced for avoiding collapse due to the weak positions of its bottom and top layers, stair halls, short walls and wall corners. Evaluation results and the corresponding seismic reinforcement design are significant for safety of both existing and newly designed masonry structures in earth-quake areas.

In this paper I develop the contention that architects rarely relate their design conceptions to the human body and its multiple forms of embodiment. Where the body is conceived of, it is usually in terms of a conception of the ‘normal body’, or a body characterised by geometrical proportions arranged around precise Cartesian dimensions. I describe and evaluate the content and implications of architects' conceptions of the body and embodiment, and consider the possibilities for, and problems in, challenging the dominance of bodily reductive conceptions in architecture.

Abstract:
This research was conducted to reconstruct the sustainability-oriented learning stages’ design on fire-retardant bamboo and its effect on self-efficacy and perceptions of prospective chemistry teacher students. This study uses mix method with Exploratory Sequential Design, which is guided by the Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER) with the following stages: (1) content structure analysis, (2) research on students’ pre-conceptions, and (3) learning design development. The instruments used were text analysis sheets, interview guidelines, validation sheets for the design of the learning stages, and questionnaires on student self-efficacy and perceptions. The topic used to develop the learning stages is the concept of ionic liquids as fire-retardant agents. The research data are scientific conceptions related to learning issues and chemical ideas. In addition, students’ pre-conceptions regarding learning topics were obtained, followed by results validating the design of learning stages as well as the ability of students’ perceptions and selfefficacy. The scientist’s conception was analysed using the content qualitative analysis method, resulting in a concept map. The result of students’ pre-conception on fire-retardant bamboo interview showed that the topic was new to the students. The percentage of students’ self-efficacy abilities increased to 88.9%, which is in the excellent category. The students’ perceptual abilities rate increased to 92.8%, which is in the agreed category. Thus, the design of sustainabilityoriented learning stages on fire-retardant bamboo can increase the self-efficacy and perceptions of prospective chemistry teacher students. The design of the learning stages can help prospective teacher students integrate chemical concepts with technological engineering in learning. Using sustainable materials in the learning stages can foster sustainability literacy in students and support the creation of sustainability-oriented education in the higher education environment

Abstract:
"Artistic conception" is the aesthetic core of Chinese painting and the essence and soul of Chinese painting. The "artistic conception" of Chinese painting is the high unity of art, nature, life and soul, forming a unique aesthetic system of Chinese painting. The "beauty of artistic conception" of Chinese painting is applied to the design of modern interior space to create space with the expression of mutuality of emptiness and reality, reckon blank as inked and symbolic implication, which can also make Chinese painting produce new visual impact in modern society. The application of the "beauty of artistic conception" of Chinese painting in interior design does not simply present the "Chinoiserie", nor is it limited to the direct imitation of Chinoiserie elements, but allows the implication of interior design to be deeply expanded, and also allows viewers to perceive the rich feelings and internal beauty associations contained in the design in the interior space. This paper will elaborate the connotation and performance characteristics of the "beauty of artistic conception" of Chinese painting, and analyze the measures and implementation methods of applying the "beauty of artistic conception" of Chinese painting to interior space design, as well as its unique value. The purpose of this paper is to innovate the design concept of modern interior space and provide a Chinese design idea, so that the interior design can reach the space design realm of "Unity of Heaven and humanity in One".

Abstract:
Lumbar drain insertion is a common procedure that is performed by anaesthesiologists, radiologists and neurosurgeons that is generally taught through supervised learning that can place patients at risk. We describe in detail the creation and considerations of a novel lumbar drain simulator designed to allow learners to rehearse the complete lumbar drain insertion procedure from start to finish. A lumbar drain simulator was designed with the goal of simulating drain placement on a patient including identifying physical landmarks, sterile field preparation, technical steps of the procedure, troubleshooting and securing and connecting the drainage system. Emphasis was placed on simulating the structural components of the anatomic compartments encountered during needle insertion and accurate reproduction of the tactile aspects of the procedure. The simulator is able to reproduce the critical aspects of drain placement, allowing for learners to practice a complete lumbar drain placement from start to finish. A complete simulation of lumbar drain placement can be created that allows learners to practise all aspects of the lumbar drain procedure. Learners can rehearse all steps of the procedure allowing them to be more confident and facile with the procedure, which can lead to improved patient safety and satisfaction.

Abstract:
This review is about biophilic design and architecture, definitions, implications and application. Scan books and studies have illustrated that the existence of terms ‘Biophilic’ and ‘Architecture’ in tandem is dramatically low, and it seems that there is no commonly agreed definition of biophilic architecture among researchers and professionals. Therefore, it has attempted to refine the concept of biophilic design in architecture, and clarifying ambiguities. The authors employed a systematic literature review methodology to synthesize research. The search results included 112 studies in the past 35 years(1984 – March 2020). Finally, 45 papers and books on the biophilic architecture were evaluated and analyzed accurately based on the leading purpose of this review study. Biophilic architecture(BA) inherently seeks to establish a reconnection between human beings and nature, and its main purpose is to promote human health and well-being. Implementation of BA should be done according to 14 biophilic design patterns and the Kellert framework. However, more research is needed to discover and develop the underlying aspects of the definition of BA, such as the need for environmental health and to meet the needs of the human’s evolutionary dimensions, which is the main distinguishing feature of this approach.

AbstractTraditionally, design opportunities and directions are conceived based on expertise, intuition, or time-consuming user studies and marketing research at the fuzzy front end of the design process. Herein, we propose the use of the total technology space map (TSM) as a visual ideation aid for rapidly conceiving high-level design opportunities. The map is comprised of various technology domains positioned according to knowledge proximity, which is measured based on a large quantity of patent data. It provides a systematic picture of the total technology space to enable stimulated ideation beyond the designer's knowledge. Designers can browse the map and navigate various technologies to conceive new design opportunities that relate different technologies across the space. We demonstrate the process of using TSM as a rapid ideation aid and then analyze its applications in two experiments to show its effectiveness and limitations. Furthermore, we have developed a cloud-based system for computer-aided ideation, that is, InnoGPS, to integrate interactive map browsing for conceiving high-level design opportunities with domain-specific patent retrieval for stimulating concrete technical concepts, and to potentially embed machine-learning and artificial intelligence in the map-aided ideation process.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this phenomenographic qualitative research, the aim is to learn about the conceptions of university professors about the university. The study was carried out with 20 university professors: 10 from the School of Social Sciences and 10 from the School of Science and Technology of University of Évora with an average age of 54 years and over 20 years of professional activity. The data were collected through open questionnaires and then submitted to thematic and categorical content analysis. The conceptions of the university appear, in the voice of the teachers, centered on two main aspects. The first and more mentioned concerns the conception of the university as a space of production and diffusion of scientific knowledge, which refers to quality factors of higher education. The second brings out the conception of the university as a space of relationship with society together with underlying concerns for human development, cooperation, and the design of a more sustainable world.

Abstract:
Although many scholars support the Lakatosian method of mathematics education for enhancing students learning, the use of the method to foster students’ transition from alternative to scientific conceptions in mathematics does not seem to have been a focus of any research. This study explored if the Lakatosian heuristic method of teaching could foster a students’ transition from alternative to scientific conceptions of the surface area of a cone. The study used a qualitative, exploratory single case study design to undertake an in-depth study of a student in the 11th grade at a secondary school in Cyprus. Data was collected through lesson observation and analyzed using deductive content analysis. The study found that beginning from informal conjectures and proofs to more formal proofs the student was able to transit from alternative conception to the scientific conception of the surface area of a cone. The finding suggests that the Lakatosian method of mathematics can foster students’ conceptual understanding of some mathematical concepts.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to report the first iteration on the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) Engineering Model altimeter named HELENA. HELENA is a Time of Flight (TOF) altimeter that provides time-tagged distances and velocity measurements. The LIDAR can be used for support near asteroid navigation and provides scientific information. The HELENA design comprises two types of technologies: a microchip laser and low noise sensor. The synergies between these two technologies enable developing a compact instrument for range measurements of up to 14 km. Thermal-mechanical and radiometric simulations of the HELENA telescope are reported in this paper. The design is subjected to vibrational, static and thermal conditions, and it was possible to conclude by the results that the telescope is compliant with the random vibration levels, the static load and the operating temperatures. Design/methodology/approach The Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) is a collaboration between the NASA DART mission and ESA Hera mission. The aim scope is to study the asteroid deflection through a kinetic collision. DART spacecraft will collide with Didymos-B, while ground stations monitor the orbit change. HERA spacecraft will study the post-impact scenario. The HERA spacecraft is composed by a main spacecraft and two small CubeSats. HERA will monitor the asteroid through cameras, radar, satellite-to-satellite doppler tracking, LIDAR, seismometry and gravimetry. Findings The HELENA design comprises two types of technologies: a microchip laser and low noise sensor.
