Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

English abstract: This article is a feminist theoretical examination of the nexus between migrants’ health and gender and attempts to fill the gap between existing gendered health and migration policies. Gender-specific challenges faced by female migrants include poor sexual and reproductive health rights, infant mortality, nutritional disorders, and violence. Non-communicable diseases provoke interruption of care in the absence of suitable health care systems and services. As policy makers struggle to develop suitable migration policies, the needs of women often fall through the cracks. Major findings are that migration policy design from micro to macro levels does not align with ratified international protocols on health, resulting in multiple vulnerabilities of female migrants. The study concludes that bilateral migration policy agreements should be comprehensive, binding, gender-sensitive, and participatory. Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Fertility performance success on dairy farms starts with estrus detection, especially for artificial insemination programs. Detection of estrus has become more difficult over the years due to a decrease in estrus expression in high-producing dairy cows, with up to 60% of ovulations accompanied by no standing mount. In order to alleviate the pressure of estrus detection, management technologies have been developed, including automated detectors of standing heat, activity monitors, automated in-line systems measuring milk progesterone, and hormonal synchronization protocols (FTAI). To gauge the effectiveness of such technologies, records from 647,940 cows across 1,166 herds over the past ten years (total of 3,466,593 breeding records) from herd management software were analyzed. Across all herds, there were 5,804 breeding protocols, of which 2,046 were unique. Due to the wide range of breeding protocols, records were classified as HORMONES, FTAI, HEAT DETECTION and OTHERS. Breeding protocols were classified as HORMONES if they included any hormone treatment. FTAI was a stricter subset of HORMONES, which included only clear FTAI protocols. Protocols were classified as HEAT DETECTION if they were a clear heat detection protocol, with all remaining protocols classified as OTHERS. These classifications resulted in 3,258 protocols classified as HORMONES, of which 2,002 were FTAI, while a further 1,840 were classified as HEAT DETECTION. The remaining 706 codes were classified as OTHER and removed from this study. These classifications provided an initial overview of breeding methods conception rates, with results indicating significant differences (P < 0.05) between all protocol groups, as outlined in Table 1. Further analysis will be completed to indicate conception rates from the most commonly used breeding protocols across each of the protocol groups within the 1,192 herds. This work will help provide a better understanding of the expected conception rate of various management technologies on commercial farms.

Abstract:
The research aimed to evaluate the onset of estrus, conception rate, pregnancy rate and duration of estrus in Bali cow, limousine cow and rambon cow after being administered with three different hormones to syncrhronize estrus. A randomized block design with two factors, type of cow and hormone dose, was performed. Fifty-four postpartum cows consisted of the three breeds were administered to a single dose of PGF2α (5 ml per cow), a double dose of PGF2α (10 ml per cow) and combination of PGF2α and hCG (1,500 IU per cow). An analysis of variance showed that different breeds did not associate with the hormone doses and their combination, as evident from the onset of estrus, duration of estrus, conception rates and service per conception. However, different cow breeds showed the same onset of estrus, service per conception and the different onset of estrus and pregnancy rates. On the other hand, different doses of PGF2α and its combination with hCG generated different onset of estrus, duration of estrus, and pregnancy rates, but shared common service per conception. In conclusion, Bali cow demonstrated a more appropriate fertility than Limousin cow and Rambon cow. A combination of PGF2α and hCG showed the most adequate hormonal treatment to synchronize the estrus compared to single and double doses of PGF2α.

Abstract:
Background: About 10-12% of couples are unable to conceive by natural means despite concerted efforts and these figures have risen in past few decades. In recent years, effect of oxidative stress on the fertility has been widely recognised. Oxidative stress has been known to affect both male and female fertility reducing sperm count and motility in men, and affecting ovum reserve and quality in women. Melatonin is the secretion of the pineal gland responsible for circadian sleep rhythm has also shown to be good antioxidant. Aim and objective of current study was to study effect of melatonin addition to clomiphene citrate for induction of ovulation with a view to improve conception rates. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 52 women with infertility who were given clomiphene citrate with melatonin. Ovulation, conception rates and pregnancy outcomes were noted. Results: We observed 77.8%ovulation rates, and a significantly better conception and live birth rates. Conclusions: Melatonin, as an anti-oxidant may improve, conception and live birth rates when added to clomiphene citrate induction protocols.

Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MGA) supplementation between the 13th and 20th day after Fixed-Time-Artificial Insemination (FTAI), on the conception and gestation rates of Nellore and crossbred cows (Nellore x Angus), pluriparous and lactating. For the study, 349 Nellore cows and 270 crossbred cows were selected, distributed into 1) group G1 (n=176): Nellore cows submitted to the FTAI protocol, without MGA supplementation; 2) group G2 (n=173): Nellore cows submitted to the FTAI protocol, with supplementation for 7 days of MGA® (0.28g/AU/day) from the 13th post-FTAI; 3) group G3 (n=119): crossbred cows: FTAI protocol, without MGA supplementation; 4) group G4 (n=151): crossbred cows: FTAI protocol followed by MGA supplementation for 7 days (0.28g/AU/day), from the 13th to the 20th day after FTAI. For statistical analysis, the procedures MIXED and GLIMMIX from SAS were used. G3 had higher rates of conception (CR=85.7%) and pregnancy (PR=95.8%) at the end of the breeding season (P<0.05), without the interference of supplementation with MGA (P>0.05). G1 females had a lower conception rate (TC=76.7%) (P<0.05), with the use of MGA® (CR-MGA=59.5%), but similar rates of pregnancy (PR=90.3%; PR-MGA=92.5%) to the G2, at the end of the breeding season (P>0.05). When G2 and G4 were compared, we found that crossbred females supplemented had higher rates of conception and pregnancy. In conclusion, crossbred animals have higher conception and pregnancy rates at the end of the breeding season. Besides, we found that Nellore females had a lower conception rate, with the use of MGA® Premix.

There has been increased interest recently in the conservation of wild felids and preservation of valuable cat breeds. Assisted reproduction, by means of artificial insemination (AI), is an important tool for developing breeding programs for conservation. Optimal use of AI requires accurate data on semen conservation protocols and its long-term storage/survival. In this paper, semen cooling and freezing processes are described, with special emphasis on the results obtained in experiments performed in the domestic cat. Conception rates after AI in wild and domestic cats are also reported.

The study was aimed at assessing the plasma trace minerals profile at 10 days interval up to 90 days postpartum, followed by estrus induction and fertility response together with mineral profiling till day 40 post-FTAI in anestrus/subestrus suckled Kankrej cows (n=36) of an organized farm using five different treatment protocols and a normal cyclic control group (6 cows in each group). The mean plasma levels of zinc, iron, copper, cobalt, and manganese did not vary significantly until 90 days postpartum in most groups, except Ovsynch and Ovsynch + CIDR and Cosynch. The estrus induction response with Ovsynch, CIDR, Ovsynch + CIDR, Cosynch, and PGF2andalpha; treatment protocols initiated at day 90-92 postpartum was 66.66, 83.33, 50.00, 66.66, and 66.66 %, and the conception rates at induced estrus in anestrus/subestrus cows were 16.66, 33.33, 16.66, 50.00 and 50.00 %, respectively. In the standard cyclic control group, the conception rate at the first cycle was 33.33 %. The above treatment protocols influenced none of the minerals studied. The values of trace minerals varied insignificantly for entire post-treatment periods even within and between conceived and non-conceived groups, with a few exceptions. There was no association between plasma trace minerals profile and estrus response or fertility after treatment. It was concluded that CIDR, Cosynch, and PGF2andalpha; protocols were better than others for estrus induction and conception rate in anestrus/subestrus zebu cows. Although they did not influence the plasma trace minerals (Zn, Fe, Cu, Co, and Mn) profile, perhaps due to well-nourished animals on the organized farm, it helped to infer that the selected animals were maintained under the optimum nutritional regime.

Abstract:
This study was initiated to change the hesitation of the farmer on the effectiveness of estrus synchronization under their (Ethiopian small holder) livestock management system using two synchronization protocols. Non-pregnant animals with normal reproductive tract and that fulfilled the preconditions for estrus synchronization were considered for treatment & assigned into two synchronization protocols (single PGF2α injection; and double PGF2α injection). Among 94 (27 heifer and 67 cows) synchronized cows using one and two injections of PGF2α protocols 26 heifers and 63 cows (89/94.7%) were exhibited estrus by visual observation and rectal palpation the remaining 5 (5.3%) did not illustrate heat. The overall pregnancy was 59.6 % with overall birth 94.3 %. High pregnancy was obtained in the double injection of PGF2α treatment group (63.1 %) than animals treated with one shot protocol 55.8 % there were statistically significant difference between treatments (p<0.05). Higher pregnancy was obtained from cross breed animals than local breeds. More over most of the animals come to estrus greater than 96 hrs. There was also significant difference between technicians on detecting the CL and conception. The estrus response, conception rate, pregnancy rate and calving rate was higher in both protocols so producers or farmers can use either the two protocols to achieve remarkable result but tight follow-ups and more resources are need to be exploited at farmer level.

Abstract:
Repeat breeding is one of the exasperating reproductive disorders of dairy cows which results in heavy economic loss to dairy farmers. The present research was conducted to compare the efficacy of different oestrous synchronization protocols in repeat breeder cows under field condition. A total of 50 repeat breeder cows formed the experimental animals for the present study. The repeat breeder cows were randomly and equally assigned to one of the five groups. viz. CIDR (Group I; n=10), Ovsynch (Group II; n=10), Ovsynch+CIDR (Group III; n=10), Ovsynch+CIDR+Vitamin AD3E&H (Group IV; n=10) and Control (Group V; n=10) and bred accordingly. The pregnancy status was checked 45 days post insemination by rectal palpation. The estrus induction response and conception rate in all five groups are compared and analysed. Though cows from all groups expressed estrus, there was significant difference (P≤0.05) in their duration of estrus which was high in Group IV. The overall conception percentage obtained in Group I, II, III, IV and V were 30, 40, 60, 80 and 20 per cent, respectively. In this study, the highest overall percentage of conception rates were recorded in group IV (80.00) followed by group III (60.00) when compared to groups II (40.00), I (30.00) and Control (20.00). Hence, it is concluded from the present study that Ovsynch+CIDR+Vitamin AD3E&H protocol resulted in better estrus expression, duration and conception rate for treatment of repeat breeder cows under field conditions than other protocols.

Abstract:
The utilization of synchronization protocols for ovulation and AI in the buffaloes has not gained a widespread use among breeders due to the usually low conception rates achieved. The tendency to enter into postpartum anestrus in the period of the year characterized by increasing day length further affects the manipulation of their reproductive efficiency. This study, carried out in the months of february to may, was designed to test the hypothesis that newly growing dominant follicles towards the end of synchronization protocols for ovulation, are more competent for establishing pregnancies following AI in cycling and non cycling buffaloes. Animals were checked by ultrasound (7.5MHz linear-array probe and SSD 500 Aloka monitor) for signs of ovarian activity and classified into cycling and not-cycling based on the presence of functional CLs and follicle turnover. Cycling buffalo heifers (CHE; n=30), cycling mixed parity buffaloes (CMP; n=14)and non-cycling mixed parity buffaloes (NCMP; n=17) were selected for a direct comparison between two synchronization protocols. CHE and CMP received two GnRH administrations at Day 0 and 9 and a luteolytic dose of PG2a at Day 7, followed by a single AI at 16h from last GnRH (‘Ovsynch’). NCMP group received a PRID implant for 9 days and 1,000 IU of PMSG at Day 7 followed by two AI at 72 and 96h from PRID removal (‘PRID+PMSG’). Ultrasound monitoring for CMP and CHE of animals was performed at day 0, 2, 4, 7, 9, and day of AI. In NCMP, ultrasound monitoring was continued also at 48, 72, 96, and 120h after PRID removal. Like superscripts (a,b) after % signs indicate significant difference. A follicle >9mm was present in 16/17 NCMP (94.1%a), 14/14 CMP (100%a), and 17/30 CHE (56.6%b; P<0.05) at the beginning of the synchronization protocol (day 0). Demise of the first large follicle recorded at day 0 and presence of a new large follicle at day 7 to 9 leading or not to ovulation, in the ovary ipsilateral or contralateral (‘follicle shift’) occurred in 15/17 (88.2%a), 11/14 (78.5%a), and 14/30 (46.6%b; P<0.05) for NCMP, CMP, and CHE respectively. Synchronized ovulations were recorded in 15/17 (88.2%a), 12/14 (85.7%a), and 26/30 (86.6%a; P>0.05) for NCMP, CMP, and CHE respectively. Conception rates (CR) by ultrasound examination at 25 to 30 days post-insemination were 12/17 (70.5%a), 6/14 (42.8%ab), and 11/30 (36.6%b; P<0.05) for NCMP, CMP, and CHE, respectively. Conceptions derived from follicle shift (either ipsilateral or contralateral) were 11/12 (91.6%a), 5/6 (83.3%a), and 7/11 (63.6%a; P>0.05) for NCMP, CMP, and CHE, respectively. In conclusion, both synchronization protocols in the three groups of buffaloes produced good ovulation and conception rates in the unfavourable period of the year. Most pregnancies resulted from fertilization of oocytes maturing in newly selected growing follicles toward the end of the synchronization protocol, suggesting a higher development competence compared to oocytes in large follicles already available at the beginning of the procedure, not regressing and leading to ovulation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
SummaryObjective: The aim of this study was to monitor the ovarian response and conception rate following estrous synchronization using CIDR, Ovsynch and double prostaglandin F2α protocols in Egyptian buffalo heifers. Material and methods: A total of 80 cyclic buffalo heifers were divided into four equal groups: CIDR (intravaginal progesterone releasing device, EAZI-BREEDTM CIDR®), Ovsynch (GnRH, PGF2α, GnRH injections), PGF (double PGF2α doses) and control. Timed artificial insemination (TAI) was performed in all heifers. All animals were exa - mined using ultrasound and blood samples were collected for measurement of progesterone. Results: A new follicular wave occurred earlier in the Ovsynch and PGF groups than in the CIDR group (p < 0.05). The mean diameter of the ovulatory follicle was smaller in the CIDR group than in the Ovsynch and PGF groups (p < 0.05). The ovulation rate was 100% in the CIDR group, 75% in the Ovsynch group and 70% in the PGF group. In the control group a lower pregnancy rate (20%) was determined in than in the CIDR (35%), Ovsynch (40%) and PGF (35%) groups. Progesterone concentrations were numerically higher in pregnant heifers of the CIDR group but the difference was non-significantly compared to the Ovsynch, PGF and control groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion and clinical relevance: EAZIBREEDTM CIDR®, Ovsynch-based TAI and PGF protocols were effective in synchronizing oestrus and resulted in nearly similar pregnancy rates in Egyptian buffalo heifers.

Abstract:
To study certain blood biochemical parameters (total cholesterol, total protein, calcium and inorganic phosphorus) at various periods of treatment. Total 40 anestrous buffalo heifers with history of anoestrus were selected from the semi-arid area of Banaskanth and randomly divided into four equal groups. (1)Group-I:Heatsynch protocol (n=10), (2)Group-II:Ovsynch protocol(n=10), (3)Group-III: Doublesynch protocol (n=10) and (4)Group-IV: Control(n=10) followed by fixed time artificial insemination in treated buffalo heifers and insemination at spontaneous estrus in buffalo heifers of group-IV. The overall conception rate following 3 consecution services was maximum in Group II (50%) followed by Group III (40%), Group I (30%) and Group IV (30%). The blood plasma was collected at the time of initiation of treatment (P1), at the time of inj. PGF2α (P2), at the time of 1st FTAI (P3) and day 21st post insemination (P4) for the estimation of biochemical parameters. The blood biochemical profiles include total protein (range: 4.54± 0.19 to 6.11± 0.52 g/dl) which in all group did not show any significant difference during the different period but significant (P<0.05) difference between the groups was noticed. Similarly calcium and phosphorus found ranging between 5.73± 0.20 to 9.53± 0.95 mg/dl and 5.46± 0.22 to 6.95± 0.30 mg/dl, respectively in all four groups. The cholesterol estimated values (range: 34.12 ± 1.75 to 41.97± 2.43 mg/dl) were found not-significantly varying between the groups as well as among the different periods. Heatsynch, Ovsynch and Doublesynch protocol can be successfully used for the induction of estrus in true anoestrus buffalo heifers with Better conception rate would be achieved following Ovsynch protocol in buffalo heifers.

Abstract:
Clinical endometritis (CE) is a serious disease leading to poor reproductive performances in lactating dairy cows, thus diminishing farm profitability. To preserve optimum reproductive efficiency, various strategies and therapeutic approaches have been proposed to manage cows with CE, often with contradictory results. Thus, investigating new paths to CE treatment is economically important. The aim of the present study was to test the efficacy of three therapeutic protocols on the clinical cure rate of CE, and improvement of reproductive performance. Cows with CE (n=42), 21–38 days in milk (DIM), were assigned to three treatment groups: PGF: cows (n=19) were treated systemically with two doses of d-cloprostenol, a PGF2α analogue, at 14-days intervals; CEFAX: cows (n=10) received an intrauterine infusion of the combined antibiotics Cefacetrile and Rifaximin; and NAX: cows (n=13) received systemic treatment with Ceftiofur crystalline free acid (CCFA). A control group included cows (n=36) free from CE (healthy group: HE). All cows were clinically re-examined after the end of the treatment protocol. The clinical cure rate was 73.7%, 80% and 69.2% in PGF, CEFAX, and NAX groups, respectively (P>0.05). The HE group had a significantly shorter calving to first service interval compared to CEFAX and PGF groups (P<0.05), however the difference was not significant with NAX group. The mean calving to fertilizing service interval (CFI) was slightly higher in all three treatment groups compared to the HE group, however the difference was not significant (P>0.05). CEFAX protocol resulted in shorter but not statistically significant CFI, compared to the PGF and NAX protocols. Services per conception rate were slightly lower (1.7) in the CEFAX group compared to HE (1.75), PGF (1.84) and NAX (2.23) groups, however these differences were not significant. First service conception rate and conception rate at 105 DIM did not differ statistically between the treatment groups. While the difference was not significant, CEFAX protocol had slightly better cure rate for CE, reducing the number of services per conception and boosting the resumption of ovarian activity after calving. Validating these finding on a larger herd size will improve the accuracy of these findings.

Abstract:
Reproductive technologies are applied to accelerate genetic progress and enhance the reproductive performance of various livestock species. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of pregnant mare serum gonadotropins (PMSGs) and prostaglandin (PGF2α) hormones on the oestrus response, conception rate, and kidding rate during the lower breeding season of the Abergele goat breed. A total of 77 Abergele does (25 for PMSG and 52 for PGF2α protocols) were used for the experiment. Experimental animals were allowed to graze (does) for approximately 8 hours and (bucks) for approximately 4 hours, followed by supplementation with a mixture of 300 to 350 g cowpea hay and wheat bran per day. For PMSG-treated does, a vaginal sponge impregnated with progesterone hormone was inserted and stayed for 12 days. After the removal of the vaginal sponge, 2 ml (400 IU) of PMSG hormone was injected for 25 does and allowed to be mated by selected bucks after 48 hours. While a single injection of PGF2α hormone was administered for 52 does and allowed for mating after 48 hours of hormone administration. The PMSG and PGF2α protocols resulted in estrus responses of 96% and 86.5%, respectively. The conception and kidding rates of does administered with the PGF2α protocol were better, with values of 57.7% and 55.8%, respectively. From the result, it was concluded that Abergele does were better responsive to both prostaglandins and gonadotropin-based protocols in inducing estrus, which can be used as an alternative approach for the improvement of the reproductive performance of goats. However, for the reason of better conception efficiency, kidding rate, and ease of application, the PGF2α protocol was found to be better responsive and effective for synchronizing Abergele does during the lower breeding season.

Abstract:
Introduction. The issues of infertility treatment remain relevant, even in light of significant advances in reproductive medicine. Among the primary factors contributing to reproductive function disorders in women, age stands out prominently. The trend of women delaying pregnancy planning due to their emphasis on social fulfillment and financial stability has been steadily increasing. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of protocols of controlled ovarian stimulation using pre-gravid preparation in patients with reduced ovarian reserve when using assisted reproductive technologies. Participants and methods. This study involved 112 women experiencing infertility due to reduced ovarian reserve and tubal infertility factors. These women underwent a brief ovulation stimulation protocol as part of an assisted reproductive technologies program. The participants were categorized into three groups: the first group comprised 43 women with infertility due to reduced ovarian reserve; prior to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) and follicular puncture, this group received a combined treatment, which included a vitamin complex containing inositol ("FT500 plus"), a dietary supplement based on alpha-lipoic acid and magnesium ("Pelvidol"), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and growth hormone ("Zomacton"); the second group consisted of 38 women with infertility associated with reduced ovarian reserve who did not receive any pre-conception preparation; the third group, serving as the control, consisted of 31 women with infertility resulting from tubal factors, and they did not undergo any pre-conception preparation. The clinical outcomes of the women in both research groups and the control group were analyzed based on their treatment tactics within the ovulation stimulation protocols in assisted reproductive technologies programs. Results and discussion. The average number of oocytes obtained from patients with infertility under reduced ovarian reserve who underwent pre-gravid preparation with the medications "FT500 plus" and "Pelvidol" is statistically higher compared to the group of women with reduced ovarian reserve who did not undergo pre-gravid preparation for COS. Clinical results also indicate positive dynamics regarding proper fertilization, blastulation of embryos and subsequent pregnancy in women, who underwent pre-gravid preparation with an inositol-based pharmaceutical "FT500plus" and the dietary supplement "Pelvidol", dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and "Zomacton" (growth hormone).Conclusion. The results of this clinical study demonstrate the effectiveness of pre-conception preparation for patients with reduced ovarian reserve (poor response). This preparation positively impacts the number of oocytes and embryos obtained, the controlled stimulation of oocytes, and the subsequent implantation of the embryo, leading to successful pregnancies.

"35 FERTILITY AFTER FIXED-TIME AI OR INSEMINATION AT DETECTED ESTRUS FOLLOWING CIDR SYNCHRONIZATION PROTOCOLS IN FRENCH DAIRY AND BEEF CATTLE." Abstract:
The CIDR synchronization protocol was introduced in France since 2008, as a 7-day intravaginal progesterone treatment (1.38 g of progesterone) coupled with AI at detected estrus. The objective of this study was to compare the synchronization, ovulation, and conception rates following fixed-timed AI (FTAI) and AI on observed heat (HAI) following a CIDR synchronization program in dairy and beef cattle under on-farm conditions. A total of 466 females from Holstein, Limousin, and Charolais breeds were synchronized from October 2008 to March 2009, and inseminated by AI technicians from 4 French cooperatives (Amélis, CECNA, COOPELSO, Groupe Altitude) with the following inclusion criteria : heifers from 14 to 28 months old, cows with 1 to 5 calvings, interval from calving from 50 to 150 days, first breeding following calving without any complication. The CIDR device was left for a 7-day period and combined with a PGF2α injection 1 day before CIDR removal and an eCG injection at the time of CIDR removal. Cows within each herd were allocated to 2 insemination groups. In the FTAI group, a single insemination was performed 56 h after CIDR removal, whereas the females from the HAI group were inseminated once from 6 to 18 h after detected estrus. For each female, cyclicity was assessed before CIDR insertion with 2 progesterone measurements assayed 10 days apart. The CIDR device was lost in 25 females during treatment. In the remaining females, estrus synchronization was estimated from a progesterone measurement 56 h after CIDR removal. Ovulation rate following CIDR programs was determined by progesterone measurements 14 days after AI. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasonography on Day 35 after AI in 417 females (24 missing values). From results of cycling females prior to treatment (n = 369), synchronization rates averaged 95.6% and 94.3% in HAI and FTAI groups, respectively. Ovulation rate, calculated from 399 synchronized or noncycling females, averaged 93.4% and 91.6% in HAI and FTAI groups, respectively. Conception rate at first AI averaged 51.9% (HAI: 52.6% v. FTAI: 47.4%; P > 0.05), and conception rate following induced estrus (i.e. calculated from ovulated females only) averaged 55% (HAI: 55.3% v. FTAI: 52.2%; P > 0.05). Conception rate was mainly influenced by breed and parity, ranging from 34% in Holstein cows to 58.7% in Holstein heifers (Table 1). To conclude, fixed-time insemination can be coupled to CIDR synchronization protocols in beef and dairy cattle and can be used to as a substitute for heat detection under on-farm conditions. Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose the basis for the unification of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) group control protocols for the fast deployment of communication network on territories unsuitable for stationary nodes placement. Design/methodology/approach The paper proposes the application of active data (AD) conception in which the data exist in a form of executable code allowing data packets to control its own propagation through network. The implementation is illustrated for some scenarios of UAV data communication network deployment, i.e., transmission of the AD using navigation functions and dynamic reconfiguration of the nodes. Findings The conception of AD expands the range of possible UAV group operations due to on-the-fly adaptation abilities to changes in existing or forthcoming group behavior protocols. This allows the real-time change of data transmission formats, frequency ranges, modulation types, radio network topologies which, in turn, provides the ability to dynamically form the special data transmission networks from a general purpose device temporarily reconfiguring them for data transmission task between transmitter and receiver beyond radio visibility range. Practical implications The paper includes use cases for some situation of UAV data communication network deployment. Originality/value The paper aims to expand the UAV group control principles by implementing by rapid adaptation to changes in existing or forthcoming group behavior protocols.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We have shown that a simplified oestrus synchronization protocol using prostaglandin F2α (PG) and oestradiol benzoate (EB) resulted in a satisfactory conception rate, similar to that obtained in high-producing dairy cows with natural oestrus (Yamaguchi et al. 2018 Reprod. Fertil. Dev. 30, 147 abstr). However, we found no significant effect of PG+EB protocols on the first-service conception rates (CR) of dairy cows. This study investigated the effect of the first-service CR by using PG+EB protocols in the high-producing dairy cows that had not exhibited oestrus expression after calving. Data concerning the first-service CR were obtained for 481 Holstein cows from 4 commercial dairy herds in Hokkaido and Ibaraki, Japan, from 2014 to 2017. The average number of parity, average interval between calving and the first service, and average milk yield (at 305 days) of the cows were 2.2±1.3, 89.7±26.1 days, and 10314±1994kg, respectively. We carried out the PG+EB protocols on cows not showing evident standing heat from Days 50 to 150 postpartum regardless of the presence of a corpus luteum in the ovary. The statuses of ovaries of cows were confirmed using ultrasonography before starting the treatment. Prostaglandin F2α (25 mg; Lutalyse, Pfizer, New York, NY, USA) was injected into cows with a >20mm cutoff for functional corpus luteum diameter at a random stage of oestrus, and EB (1 mg; Ovahormon®, Aska Animal Health Co., Tokyo, Japan) was injected 24h later, and AI was carried out 24 to 48h after EB injection. Cows with a natural oestrus service from Days 50 to 150 postpartum were used as control. All the cows were inseminated after the onset of standing heat or removal of the tail chalk. Pregnancy diagnoses were performed using ultrasonography 30 to 45 days after AI. The CR and intervals of partum to conception were analysed using a chi-square test and ANOVA. The first-service CR (i.e. the number of pregnant cows/total number of cows in the treatment group) of the natural oestrus (n=330) and PG+EB (n=151) groups were 42.7 and 41.1%, respectively, and there were no significant differences between these 2 groups (P=0.7). The average interval between calving and the first service of the PG+EB groups was significantly longer than that of the natural oestrus groups (86.4±1.5 days v. 96.9±1.9 days; P<0.01). The average days open of the natural oestrus and PG+EB groups were 88.5±3.2 days and 98.1±2.3 days, respectively (P<0.05). These results confirmed that the first-service CR in the PG+EB and natural oestrus groups of high-producing dairy cows were similar. We suggest that conducting PG+EB protocols was effective in the high-producing dairy cows that had not exhibited oestrus expression after calving. Moreover, using PG+EB protocols could prevent the further increase in the number of days open.
