Abstract:
In this essay, I consider three different conceptions of ‘the people’ and what it means to ‘respect’ their collective will and wisdom: (a) the democratic conception of the people as a sprawling demos, (b) the populist conception of the people as an authentic folk (c) and, finally, the vanguardist conception of the people as the semi-mute masses who stand in need of revolutionary transformation. Although my ultimate aim is to defend the democratic conception of the people over both the populist conception and the vanguardist conception, much of this essay is taken up simply spelling out each of these conceptions of the people and outlining their consequences for the conduct of politics. I begin by contrasting the democratic conception with the populist conception. I then turn briefly to the vanguardist conception. I close with a brief, and admittedly incomplete defence of a particular form of democracy – what I call transformative or ameliorative democracy – which conceives of the people as a self-transformative totality.

Abstract:
What are human rights? According to one longstanding account, the Naturalistic Conception of human rights, human rights are those that we have simply in virtue of being human. In recent years, however, a new and purportedly alternative conception of human rights has become increasingly popular. This is the so-called Political Conception of human rights, the proponents of which include John Rawls, Charles Beitz, and Joseph Raz. In this paper we argue for three claims. First, we demonstrate that Naturalistic Conceptions of human rights can accommodate two of the most salient concerns that proponents of the Political Conception have raised about them. Second, we argue that the theoretical distance between Naturalistic and Political Conceptions is not as great as it has been made out to be. Finally, we argue that a Political Conception of human rights, on its own, lacks the resources necessary to determine the substantive content of human rights. If we are right, not only should the Naturalistic Conception not be rejected, the Political Conception is in fact incomplete without the theoretical resources that a Naturalistic Conception characteristically provides. These three claims, in tandem, provide a fresh and largely conciliatory perspective on the ongoing debate between proponents of Political and Naturalistic Conceptions of human rights.

Abstract:
The reproductive seasonality model states that it is adaptive for species in seasonally variable environments to temporally cluster reproductive events around periods of resource availability. Many studies have examined links between seasonal reproduction and phenological events, though few studies have fully tested the adaptive hypothesis by examining the effects of reproductive timing on outcomes. Our study tests the predictions of the model in an African cercopithecine, the Sanje mangabey, by examining the impact of food availability on the timing of conception, birth and weaning, and the relationship of reproductive timing and female energy balance (urinary C-peptide) to infant survival. From September 2008 through 2010, 28 infants were born. Distribution of conceptions was non-uniform, with a peak between January and March. There was a significant positive correlation between mean monthly fruit availability and number of conceptions per month. An increased food supply supports a positive energy balance, maximizing the potential for conception; a pattern found among many cercopithecines. Mothers that conceived within the peak period also exhibited higher levels of urinary C-peptide during preconception and early gestation, compared to conceptions outside the peak period. This strategy increased the probability of survival to year one, as it was significantly higher for infants conceived during the peak conceptive season. These results support the reproductive seasonality model and demonstrate that the timing of conception is critical for mangabey reproductive success.

Abstract:
This paper deals mainly with Marx's conception of politics. My contention is that in Marx's works two basic and opposed conceptions of politics coexist. On the one hand we find a negative, instrumental and realist conception that sees politics as nothing but domination of one class over another and the State as the main instrument of that domination. On the other, we find a positive conception that understands politics as community self-rule. I trace the conceptual origins of these two conceptions to three basic concepts: "alienation", "emancipation" and "species-being". These notions provide the foundations of Marx's conception of politics and enable us to understand its shortcomings. It is basically a contradictory and utopian conception which seriously disregards both the positive traits of actual politics and individual freedoms.

Abstract:
The formation of directions for Ukraine’s exit from the «trap of backwardness» in the post-war period requires a logical and well-grounded conception built on the principles of modern science. In modern research, much attention is paid to the development of methodological support for the development of conceptions and conceptional provisions as a basis for the development of the country. However, there is currently no single scientifically grounded conception for Ukraine’s exit from the «trap of backwardness» after the war. The aim of the article is to substantiate the draft conception of Ukraine’s exit from the «trap of backwardness» in the post-war period. The main postulates of classical and neoclassical theories and conceptions that examine the problems of backwardness of countries by directions and dynamics of socioeconomic development, as well as individual authors’ models that describe various modifications of the «traps of backwardness» are generalized. The basic postulates of modern European research on the problems of recovery of the socioeconomic development after crises are defined. On this basis, a theoretical platform for the draft conception of Ukraine’s exit from the «trap of backwardness» is proposed. The effectiveness of the use of cognitive models to address the needs of the theory and practice of Ukraine’s post-war exit from the «trap of backwardness» is shown. The draft conception of Ukraine’s exit from the «trap of backwardness» in the post-war period is substantiated, containing a number of hypotheses and provisions, which together solve an important scientific and practical task of creating a mechanism and conditions for overcoming and destroying the trap of backwardness in Ukraine, as well as excluding the causes and possibilities of its reproduction in the post-war and long-term periods. Theoretical and practical problems that can be solved on the basis of the implementation of the draft conception of Ukraine’s exit from the «trap of backwardness» presented in the article are structured.

Abstract:
This study examined secondary school science teachers’ conceptions of the nature of scientific knowledge (NOSK). The participants were convenient samples consisting of 48 (M = 38, F = 10) teachers from three secondary schools. An open-ended questionnaire was administered to collect data. Qualitative analysis involved comparing teachers’ responses to experts’ views on NOSK. Frequency counts and percentages were also used to describe the NOSK conceptions of participants. Based on the findings, the teachers held informed conceptions on two NOSK tenets and naïve conceptions on four of them. The participants generally held a naïve conception of NOSK, as evidenced by the fact that their conception aligned with informed conception only on two of the seven assessed NOSK aspects. Future research should use large samples, employing a quantitative approach to reveal secondary school teachers’ NOSK conceptions.

The article refers exclusively to the Carl Schmitt’s political theology. His three conceptions of political theology and corresponding theoretical approaches are reconstructed and precisely analysed. The first conception is called the sociology of concepts or the theory of analogies between religious and legal-political concepts. The second Schmitt’s approach to political theology is the eschatological conception. Both these conceptions are basically descriptive and analytical. Solely the third conception is normative (and political), therefore, its presents the concept of political theology as a normative approach to the Political.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of infertility and assisted conception in contemporary India. It explores some of the prominent themes underpinning the cultural engagement with reproductive disruption and seeks to understand how people - inflicted infertile individuals and treatment providers - grapple with conception gone-awry. In doing this, the research locates both clinical and non-clinical responses to the process of assisted conception, within the wider cultural context that views infertility as highly undesirable. The research is multi-sited and attempts to connect a number of disparate domains in which the experience of infertility and the promotion and management of its treatment lies dispersed. This has principally entailed an eclectic engagement with a number of diverse 'locales,' such as the political economy of health in India, the mass media as a field for promoting and contesting assisted conception, ancient norms and ideas about fertility and their reverberation in contemporary Hindu conceptual domain. The thesis highlights the importance of this cultural frame for producing stigma and as a 'sense making' resource for understanding assisted conception. Taken together, these locales unravel the complex nature of infertility and assisted conception in India.

Papatolias, Apostolos. Paris 10, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA100116.

Full text
Abstract:
Every human representation can be viewed as a conception of the constitution if it addresses in an explicit or implicit manner the following question: how a constitution is able to influence, in a precise and efficient manner, political and social behavior? It is possible to distinguish between two different "conceptions of the constitution", in the sense of general categories susceptible of enclosing more than one particular conception: a "mechanist conception" and a "normative conception". For the mechanist conception the constitution is considered as an "artificial»: the junction between constitutional action and the result of this action - the social fact which grows out of her. The constitution is viewed as a mechanism which affects political and social reality in a "causal" manner that is to say independently of the governor's impulsion. For the normative conception the constitution is considered as a set of fundamental and paramount legal norms which govern the activity of public authorities in an imperative way. The efficiency of the constitution is thus limited to the influence that a certain number of imperatives, written or unwritten, can have on people for whom they are intended

Abstract:
Two studies are reported which examine the availability of scientific propositions of personality in lay conceptions of personality. It is argued from a social constructivist perspective that models of personality must derive from and refer to lay conceptions of persons. Eysenck's trait-type model of introversion-extroversion, containing specific propositions about phenotypic and genotypic differences between extraverts and introverts, was utilized as the scientific model of personality and its availability in lay conceptions of personality was examined in two studies. In the first study, subjects were presented with a genotypic characterization of either an introvert or an extravert target person and asked to infer corresponding phenotypic differences. In the second study, the inference process was reversed with subjects being asked to infer genotypic characteristics of introverts versus extraverts on the basis of phenotypic target person descriptions of the two types. Results from both studies show a high degree of accuracy in subjects' inferences, suggesting that laypersons have well-formed conceptions about personality containing 'higher-order' psychogenetic propositions corresponding to Eysenck's trait-type model. The implications of the findings for theory construction are discussed.

Martin, Ludovic. "Conception aérodynamique robuste." Toulouse 3, 2010. http://thesesups.ups-tlse.fr/1608/.

Full text
Abstract:
Aerodynamic studies are often based on some numerical observations like the drag or lift coefficients. Consequently, it is fundamental to define tools and methodologies devoted to the reliable evaluation of these scalar observations. This master thesis will describe some strategies and methods in order to better control the computation of a scalar aerodynamic observation. Three classes of strategies have been considered. The evaluation strategy consists in determining the kind of evolution of the observation depending on parameters. In this context, the estimation of the first and especially second order sensibilities, obtained by automatic differentiation of industrial codes, allows us to know the local evolution (tangents and curvatures). The singular perturbation method is another and innovant method to determine the non-linear evolution of an aerodynamic observation without using the second order derivatives. The fiability strategy will try to increase the level of confidence in the numerical evaluation of the scalar aerodynamic observation. The uncertainty affecting some parameters that influence the scalar observation is taken into account in order to make the numerical evaluation more robust and reliable. Finally, the optimisation strategy consists in finding particular values of the aerodynamic observation which respects some constraints. The optimisation under uncertainty means that optimisation parameters are uncertain, that is to say constraints are statistical variables, like statistical moments or failure probabilities

Abstract:
Innovation processes of large companies experience a lack of resources between Research and Development, i.e. the valley of death. Safran created its Innovation Department to counterbalance. It is based on exchanges with the subsidiaries. However such exchanges cannot be processed in most early stages, when they include unknowns. For instance, ideas generated through the DKCP method remain unexplored. This intervention-research aims at establishing a model of collective action to exchange in the unknown. It defends the thesis that, in the unknown, sellers and buyers of innovative technologies engage in the design of the boundary between technologies and environments.Facing the limits of classic models of exchanges of economy, decision, intéressement and creativity, this thesis adopts a design-theories framework. It proposes the model of design engagement of resources. It explains the limits of a common tool for exchanging technologies, i.e. Technology Readiness Levels. It proposes to model exchanges between seller and buyer as the exploration of the Technology-Environment boundary. To do so it constructs the C-K T / C-K E formalism. Finally, the method Steering Exploration Through Technology and Environment Invariants ("Pilotage de l'Exploration Par les Invariants Technologie-Environnement" (PEPITE) in French) is constructed in collaboration with Safran Innovation Department. It is based on two cases of explorations which passed the valley of death within the researchers intervention

Full text
Abstract:

Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01D087/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Although case law has not entirely ruled out the theory of the “ordre public de proximité”, it’s scope has constantly been decreased to the point that it is now impossible to question it’s fall from grace. Hence pushing for a study of it’s future existence in the general theory of privateinternational law. In spite of recurrent criticism from Doctrine sources, the “ordre public de proximité” has not become useless. A renewed interpretation of its overall functioning is needed to overcome the fear of taking over the role of the public policy exception and therefore encouraging cultural relativism. However, considering the rehabilitation of the “ordre public de proximité” should not misguide us into thinking it is flawless. When confronted to the evolution of private interational law and a possible mutation of the public policy exception, the inadaptability of this principle becomesobvious. More specifically when transiting toward a logical ranking of values as necessairy for it’s effective functioning, one may fear a lack of consideration for the foreign norm. As a consequence, the “ordre public de proximité” seems to build itself outside of the public policytheory highlighting the need to consider it’s overcoming. Redefining the theory of the so-called “effet atténué” (limited effect) could represente an effective solution on condition that this system is founded on the balance of interest. In conclusion, if the “ordre public de proximité” cannot exist as an independent mechanism, the proximity condition must remain and support the development of proportionality as the reasoning method for the application of the so-called “effet atténué”

Paris 6, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA066659.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents a method for analyzing human conceptions related to e-learning, based on positioning data on what is called here a learning matrix. The set of dimensions comprising the matrix distinguish between emphasis on individuality and sociality in learning, between viewing learning as knowledge adoption and as knowledge construction, and between viewing learning as subjective and as objective to time. The learning matrix is used to visualize and compare conceptions of learning extracted from literature and from individual perceptions of learning, revealed through interviews. This study supports the development of e-learning environments and casts light on different conceptions of learning. In addition deriving and representing the learning matrix, the paper positions 13 learning theories on it. A concluding analysis of an interview with an e-learning platform designer implies that while certain aspects of a designer’s conception of learning relate to learning theories, the overall conception remains unique and dynamic.

Full text
Abstract:
On basis of the known experiments it is considered the existing conceptions about the linear and elliptic polarisation of light. It is shown that the conception of the linear polarization does not have the arguments of physical character, and the conception about existence of the elliptic polarisation was founded on mathematical formulae. Since the direct experimental proof of the light elliptic polarization is lacking it is carried out an analysis of the experimental scheme of the indirect confirmation. It is shown that this scheme cannot give such confirmation.
