Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are often used to enhance system performance, especially when a General Purpose Processor (GPP) is too inefficient or ill suited to perform a specialized task. However, the time and hardware costs inherent in the development and implementation of such a solution can be quite expensive. The use of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to implement a Reconfigurable Processor (RP) can help alleviate some of the overhead encountered with ASIC development. The RP is a dynamic processing node that can be configured in-circuit to compute any realizable function at run-time. After the function has finished execution, the RP can be reconfigured to compute a different function. This concept is illustrated with the reconfigurable, multimedia Chidi Processing System. A network of Chidi boards, each with a closely coupled GPP and RP, is used to execute a sequence of multimedia related functions. One of the main issues in utilizing a RP efficiently is the ability to provide it with data effectively. The design and implementation of a data servicing subsystem for the Chidi Reconfigurable Processor, in an effort to increase system performance, is the main focus of study. This research is supported by the Digital Life Consortium at the MIT Media Laboratory.

Full textDue to the growing interest that current society has in new technologies, new products in the fields of information and communication technologies are emerging in new environments still unexploited. In this way, vehicles are a perfect frame for installing a lot of useful functionalities traditionally available at work or home environments. However, this expansion needs a suitable hardware and software support adapted for the market and user demands. The on-board software architecture developed in the frame of the thesis covers some of these issues and acts as the basis for the rest of proposals presented in the work. Integration of telematics and vehicular communications in next-generation cars will turn the provision of contextual information into the cornerstone of vehicular services. In the world of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) such capability has a key role in the transmission of traffic incidences. Although there are multitude of solutions for the problem of sharing information between vehicles and between the vehicle and the infrastructure, none presents a valid general communication architecture for the notification, storage, management and provision of context-aware information on traffic and current location. The proposal given in the thesis offers a solution using an integrated vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication paradigm enriched with an information management system. The infrastructure manages all the collected safety hazards heard from vehicles and the interesting information to be provided to the user, and adapts these to the car's context and driver's preferences. Moreover, positioning requirements of this new generation of ITS services are continuously growing. New applications in the vehicular domain require positioning sensors with a high level of accuracy, availability, continuity and integrity. The proposed navigation and networking architectures are of special relevance in the thesis and, as it is explained, both of them imply novel designs not only in the vehicle, but also in the remote and road side support. In addition to the system design, a real vehicle prototype and the whole implementation of the system are presented. This test-bed has been also used to perform multitude of experimental evaluations, which demonstrate the suitability of the whole proposed platform.

Full textNowadays, companies have business processes that contribute to the fulfillment of their objectives, the most common problems that we can find is the lack of automation, which can generate overwork of their workers. All of the mentioned represents a risk with respect to the quality of life of people due to the increase in stress levels, which as a consequence has an impact on productivity in general, especially in companies that provide customer service. This document details a solution proposal for the service attention process of a company dedicated to provide technical support and repair of computer and communications equipment. Currently, the company has a great demand which has caused it to have problems with the work of its repair services, the main problem of the organization is the delay in the attention of the equipment, which causes discomfort in customers and economic losses for company, it also generates an overload on technical personnel, which can influence the repair process. In this context, the solution will be focused on the development of software that automates the equipment repair service process through the implementation of a web application that emulates a Kanban board, in order to achieve an adequate management of the care of service orders and encourage the collaborative work of technical staff.

Full textINTRODUCTION: Nurse Managers (NM) usually use in the nursing teams management (NTM) in Barcelona Hospitals Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). There are deficiencies in ICTs that can cause deterioration in quality and inefficient costs in health organizations. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the quality of the NTM ICT in Barcelona Acute Hospitals according to the ISO / IEC 25000. Understand the NM experience in the use of NTM ICT tools. METHODOLOGY: The research was divided into two phases for the objectives development, and carried out in 6 Acute Hospitals in Barcelona, 2014-2017. Phase-1: NTM ICT quality evaluation according to ISO / IEC-25000. From the perspective of software purchasers, the external quality model was chosen. Organizational(3), ICT characteristics(3) and quality measures(17) were studied, fulfilling validity-reliability criteria. Phase-2: Qualitative methodology (hermeneutic-phenomenology) was chosen for the understanding of the personal experiences lived by NM in the use of NTM ICT. The study population was 21 NM, until theoretical saturation. The in-depth interview was used, the analysis was of content, observing rigor and quality criteria. RESULTS: Phase-1. ICTs studied: Excel©, Human-Soft©, Graelles©, Bold-Work-Planner©, Work-Planner© and Productive-SAP©. Main results: Functional Sufficiency=0.89; Integrity of Functional Implementation=0.70; Computational Accuracy=0.025; Resolution of Faults=0.90; Mean Time Between Failures (days)=8.90; Function comprehensibility=0.79 (95%CI 0.65-0.94); Ease of Learning (hours)=50.4 (95%CI 4,17-96,63); Efficiency of the system Help in use=0.43 (95%CI 0.15-0.71); Response Time=12.61 (95%CI 3.86-21.36) and Time to enter the command=28.33 (95%CI 3.00-53.66); Processing Performance=1.7 (95%CI 1.43-1.97). Phase-2. The NM participating, with heterogeneous profile, experience 3-30 years, functions of Unit Supervisor, General Supervisor, Area Manager with 30-1300 nurse teams. The information needs are related to professional coverage criteria, health care conditions, management of planned and unplanned coverage, changes, rotations, updating of information. The information provided by ICTs, sometimes considered useful, in others it is limited: incomplete, difficult to access, outdated, or deficient. CONCLUSIONS: The ICT NTM is ussually used by NM in the hospitals of Barcelona, and its quality is "Regular" depending on the TIC used, with very variable availability of functions. The NM perception depends on the ICT used and the organizational environment. Information needs are common among NM, with mostly negative experiences.

Full textABSTRACT: The hypothesis in this thesis is that the use of software agents can improve the processes involved in the management of interlibrary loan (ILL) in Spanish university libraries. The thesis have two main objectives: first, to analyze the processes involved in the management of ILL, comparing the Spanish model with international standards; second, to analyze the functionality of software agents in the field of libraries, assessing their feasibility and performance in the management of ILL, in order to ascertain its usefulness. To achieve these objectives, two types of methodologies are applied: on the one hand a review of current literature and standards, and on the other an experimental methodology based on observation of the performance of computer agents in the management of ILL transactions. The use of three types of agents have been studied: agents that enable verification of administrative and bibliographic data of the requests, search agents who complete bibliographic references to minimize errors in the subsequent localization, and agents for synchronization status of requests from different ILL management systems. The tests for this compatibility have been tested among Spanish university libraries using GTBib ILL system and OCLC WorldShare integrated LMS. As results of the literature and standards review we have profiled the characteristics and idiosyncrasies of the Spanish universities ILL model, in comparison to other countries like the US or UK. While in Spain a decentralized model prevails, in which each university library has its own management program (GTbib the prevalent one, with a 95% share), in other countries predominate centralized models, associated in most cases with a union catalog, as it is the case with OCLC in the US, or in other cases like UK where the model is based in a huge lending library and document supply center such as the British Library. The results obtained after applying agents to ILL management systems have been very useful for some reasons: agents perform tasks efficiently and that improves the overall performance, with a reduced process time for the requests. That at the end gives to the user and the librarians a greater satisfaction and a timely control of the process.
