Abstract:
The use of computer application software could be increased. The goal of this research was to uncover a design for a module which instructs the potential user how to use software. This type of module, called an instructional module, would, when incorporated on software such as decision support tools, increase the willingness of novices to use the software more frequently. Four instructional modules designs, which were the result of combining two states of two variables of instructional module design, were examined. The four designs are (1) an automated programmed learning module; (2) an automated help facility; (3) a manual programmed learning module and; (4) a manual help facility. A financial decision support tool was developed, and each of the four instructional modules designs was placed separately on the decision support tool. This created, in effect, four different tools. Subjects in the experiment were business school students with no formal experience using a decision support tool. Each subject was exposed to two of the four instructional module designs during a training session which lasted one hour. One month after the training session, the subjects were reassembled for a second session. During this session, the subjects selected one of the two tools, with its instructional module, which they had been exposed to previously. The subjects were to use the selected tool to solve problems which would likely require them to access the instructional module. In addition to these behavioral selection data, attitudinal data concerning the instructional module designs were also collected throughout both sessions of the experiment. Based on their selection and their attitudinal responses, the subjects indicated that the tool with the automated programmed learning module was the module of choice. The research methodology successfully provided input for instructional module design for computer application software such as decision support tools.

Abstract:
This study addresses the effectiveness of educational microcomputer software with hearing impaired students. A review of the literature revealed a large void in the empirical research on this topic and also indicated that a lack of suitable and appropriate software, was a major hurdle to the successful use of CAI with hearing impaired students. This study investigated the effectiveness of a specific educational microcomputer program (MECC : Trapezoids and Triangles Areas) with a group of hearing impaired students. The 18 students were randomly divided into two groups. One group viewed the tutorial portion of the software and then worked with the practise section. While the other group worked only with the practise section of the software. This was done to measure and compare the effectiveness of both portions of the program. The students were carefully observed as they interacted with the computer. Problems they encountered with the software, their achievement during exposure to the software and on pre and post tests, were all recorded by the experimenter. These data were used to measure the changes that took place due to microcomputer application, to evaluate the effectiveness of this software, to make recommendations regarding the characteristics required to improve this software, and to set "guidelines" for the development of future educationally effective software for the hearing impaired. The results revealed the need for software that contains a measured and controlled level of syntax, more advanced diagnostic and remedial capabilities, and a simplified more thorough presentation of the information. This study demonstrated the need for more research related to identification of the important factors and teaching strategies which make software more educationally effective for use with hearing impaired students.

Abstract:
Many educators struggle to meet the academic needs of students, especially in the subject area of mathematics. Computer-assisted instruction is an instructional strategy used to enhance instruction. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these software programs for all students. The purpose of this qualitative, embedded, multiple case study was to explore the perceptions of teachers and students using computer-assisted instructional software to differentiate instruction within a general education and special education 4th-grade mathematics classroom. The constructivism theory provided a framework for the topic of differentiated instruction. This study included a single elementary school within a district in the Southeastern United States. The participants of this study included 1 general education and 1 special education 4th-grade mathematics teacher. In addition, participants included 6 general education and 4 special education 4th-grade mathematics students. Introductory and follow-up teacher interviews, introductory and follow-up student focus group interviews, 6 classroom observations, and teacher lesson plans were used as data collection methods. Gerund coding, categorizing, and content analysis was employed to interrogate the data. The constant comparative method was used to determine within-case and across-case themes and discrepancies. The findings revealed that teachers used computer-assisted instructional software, MobyMax, to meet individual student needs, monitor student progress, implement small group instruction, increase student engagement, and supplement primary teacher-led instruction. Educators can use the findings of this study to understand how teachers can use computer-assisted instruction to meet the needs of students.

Software systems have experienced an impressive growth in the last few decades and have impacted a wide variety of areas. In this respect, two elds bene t greatly. Learning and research. In this work, we present several software systems that we have created to assist in the process of learning and to help researchers by performing complex computations and generating data. We demonstrate three web-based educational video games that we developed to teach science to middle school students. We also describe several software systems that we created for research in graph theory and model checking. Finally, we discuss our results, contributions and future directions.

Abstract:
The multimedia computer is a relatively new product that is capable of presenting information through a variety of media such as text, animation, video & sound. Commercial developers, researchers and other multimedia advocates have been making claims about the potential for multimedia in promoting learning and, consequently, its beneficial uses as a learning tool within the classroom. This study investigates the conditions under which the organization and coordination of multimedia sources promotes the acquisition of knowledge. Based upon a review of the literature, five hypotheses are generated with respect to the development of instructional software as an effective learning tool. These hypotheses are then tested in a study that looks at the effects of various multimedia designs. One hundred students, half of high-ability (i.e., high-stream) and the other half of average ability (i.e., regular stream), were assigned to one of five multimedia conditions (e.g., text only (T); text with animation (TA); text with animations and captions (TAC); animations and captions (AC); refined animation and captions (RAC)). The instructional material presented information on how to find South using two sticks, some string and the Sun. The TAC and RAC groups outperformed the other three groups on scores of verbal recall, visual recall, and enactment of the main procedures. These two groups also obtained higher scores on detailed analyses of written recalls. Finally, interaction effects for stream level and computer presentation group were also obtained. The results from this study are contrasted to those of an earlier study by Breuleux et al. (1993). The implications of these results are discussed in terms of statistical support for theoretically based guidelines for the development and design of effective instructional multimedia.

Abstract:
The incorporation of best practice in e-learning environments can increase the probability of success for companies and learners alike. By identifying and understanding the barriers that potential learners may face when interacting with e-learning products, the potential for e-learning failure may be alleviated. There are a variety of benefits that may be realised by companies incorporating e-learning opportunities into their management strategies. However, certain pedagogical principles, metrics and components need to be investigated and implemented in order for a corporate e-learning environment to be successful. The aim of this research is to prototype and evaluate a practical e-learning environment for software training (eLESTP) with e-learning components consisting of interactive learning objects that can guide the development and management of online training in the corporate context. The eLESTP is based on a theoretical contribution that is conceptualised in the form of an e-learning environment for software training (eLESTT). Hence, this study followed a research methodology that is appropriate for educational technologies, namely the Design-Based Research (DBR) methodology, which was applied in iterative cycles. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected by means of a case study, interviews, a focus group and survey. The proposed eLESTP underwent several iterations of feedback and improvement and the result is a real-world solution to the problem at hand. With the purpose of determining the success of corporate e-learning, the barriers and critical success factors for e-learning as well as evaluation criteria were explored. Interviews, a focus group and a survey were conducted in order to validate the investigated literature in a real-world context. Informal interviews enabled a better understanding of the organisational context of this study. The focus group was conducted with customers who were undergoing face-to-face training using conveyancing software developed by Korbitec. Many of the issues faced by learners identified in literature regarding e-learning in developing countries were identified by the participants from the case study. An e-learning survey was used to gather information regarding the intention of Korbitec’s customers to use e-learning as well as their satisfaction with using e-learning. From the survey, it was found that respondents were positive regarding intention to use and satisfaction toward e-learning usage. DBR Cycle 1: Problem Investigation and Proposal entailed the initial problem investigation by conducting a literature review, focus group and survey. DBR Cycle 2: Design Alternative 1 of this study involved a design alternative for eLESTP, namely Prototype 1. DBR Cycle 3: Design and Evaluate Alternative 2 involved the design and prototyping of Prototype 2 for eLESTP as well as the improvement of Prototype 2 through sub-cycles of testing and refinement. The suggestions for improvement were obtained from the relevant stakeholders at Korbitec who are content developers and subject-matter experts. The criteria used to evaluate the success of eLESTP, including its e-learning components, were synthesised and adapted from literature and a new set of evaluation criteria for e-learning environments in software training contexts was proposed. The evaluated eLESTP consists of the technology basis of the Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle), design guidelines for e-learning components, certification and competency-based training, pedagogical principles and best practice. Overall, eLESTP was positively received by various evaluator groups in formative and summative evaluations. The research results indicate that the use of an e-learning environment for software training purposes was useful and necessary. In support of this Masters dissertation, the following three conference papers have been published and presented at one local conference and two international conferences. In addition, an article has been published in an accredited journal: 1. IDIA 2015, Conference Paper – Zanzibar (Tanzania); 2. Conf-IRM 2016, Conference Paper – Cape Town (South Africa); 3. MCIS 2016, Conference Paper – Cyprus (Europe); and 4. IJIKM 2016, Journal Article.

This paper provides an investigation into the use of professional level music software as a learning tool for creativity and composition in primary school children. The researcher believed that music and sound editing was under-used in schools and that children could: -work successfully with that type of software -work creatively with the software -benefit from its use. A small case study was used to expose the participants (eight children from Grades 3-6) to two professional level music software applications: Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and Cool Edit 2000. The children explored the software and completed set tasks over a ten-week period. Data, in the form of the students’ work, taped copies of all sessions, interviews and researcher reflections, were analysed to present an understanding of the creative and compositional processes and products. In addition, all student pieces were recorded onto CD. The analysis of data suggests competent use of both software applications as well as satisfactory completion of set tasks. The data also indicate that the participants were able to operate at compositional levels beyond their age and musical skills and knowledge. Conclusions are drawn to suggest that, in this case, the use of this software has assisted the creative process and has allowed these children the opportunity to compose and construct pieces that could not have been constructed without the software. Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of acquisition and use of microcomputer software in Arizona high school library media centers, and to determine the selection procedures used by the library media specialists or other designated personnel responsible for the library media centers. The instrument used in this study was a survey developed and reviewed by a committee of school library media specialists. Subjects selected as the target population were 130 Arizona high school library media specialists. The procedures used for testing the 13 hypotheses were: (1) point biserial correlation coefficients, (2) t-tests, and (3) frequency distributions. Significant findings were indicated for the analysis of data of six hypotheses. The conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) As the size of the student body increases, the availability of microcomputer software for library management purposes also increases. (2) As the size of the library media budget increases the availability of microcomputer software for library management purposes also increases. (3) A negative relationship between the size of the library media center budget and the intention to obtain microcomputer software for school-wide purposes presented an anomaly for the intuitive approach to the analysis. (4) The methods chosen for evaluating and selecting microcomputer software varied significantly for each type of software selected. (5) Cell means indicated that for each type of library management programs obtained by the library media center, three school-wide programs were obtained. (6) Microcomputer software is utilized in the library media center more than in either classroom or in computer labs. Recommendations for additional investigation were discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the content and characteristics of the currently available commercial reading software for Pre-K through third grade children. The design of the study was a content analysis. Based on the evaluation rubric established by the researcher, ten commercial reading software were selected to be analyzed. By reviewing and transcribing, the data were obtained, and then coded, categorized, and interpreted. The findings from the analysis revealed that all reading software programs offered exercised for practicing basic phonics skills; the alphabetic principle, letter-sound association, word knowledge, sentence building, and reading comprehension. Depending on the software developers, phonics-based practice was presented in two ways; separate skill-based practice emphasis and storybook-reading emphasis. All software programs utilized drill-and-practice, direct instruction and mastery learning methods and utilized gaming strategies to motivate and engage the learners. Multimedia technology was used to make the software more appealing. All reading software programs were developed on the perspectives that view learning to read as the continuum of a child's oral language development and background experience about words. It is recommended that parents and teachers review and select the software based on reliable information sources, use the software as supplementary practice based on the learning objectives identified and individual student needs.

This study investigates the use of a new literacy software ABRACADABRA with pre-reading kindergarten students. The participants ( n=27) from one school were assigned randomly to one intervention group (rime or phoneme) and (n=17) school two served as a control. Ten hours of either a rime or phoneme ABRACADABRA intervention were employed to compare overall effectiveness of the software with regular classroom instruction. All participants were pre-tested at the onset of the study and post-tested following the intervention using eight highly sensitive measures to detect change in word reading strategies and phonemic skills specific to the two delivery methods. Measures were developed from previous studies and included blending and segmenting of matched CV (consonant-vowel), VC (vowel-consonant) words, high and low rime nonsense word reading, rime and coda articulation tasks. The results showed improvement in both interventions over the control on Letter-Sound knowledge and a combined reading task with a large advantage to the phoneme intervention in blending of VC words.

This thesis reviews the methods and criteria that Western Australian school teachers and District Consultants of computers use in the selection of Educational computer software. Questionnaires were used to survey these two groups ( N=301, teachers and N=20 District Consultants) on aspects such as: how they select software; what criteria they employ in selecting software; how confident they feel about software selection; their level of training in software selection; and the skills and resources they have in software selection. This data was then analysed through the application of computer based analysis programs. From the data collected some questions arose about the methods employed in software selection and whether they were conducive to the selection of good quality software. The current status of the Education Department's ( formerly called the Ministry of Education ) preferred document on software selection 'Software Focus' was also bought into focus as a result of the data collected in this study. The questions raised in this study relate to several important issues, not least of all, how can Western Australian primary school teachers be helped in making careful and considered selections of software for their classroom? The findings of the research, provided useful information about the attitudes, understandings, skills and needs of the teachers in W.A. primary schools with regards to the selection of educational software. It indicated a need for further training in software selection; a need for increased awareness of the Education Department document ‘Software Focus’ and a need to bring to the attention of teachers the importance of the proper selection of software for increased efficiency. It also indicated that 'Software Focus' would need to be reviewed and updated to be the effective resource for which it was designed. This research also provided useful information about the similarities and differences which exist between W.A primary school teachers and District Consultants with regards to software selection. This research indicated that District Consultants and teachers differ significantly in their methods of selection of software and the factors which influence that selection. Other significant indications are that District Consultant are: more likely to assess software before they use it; feel better trained in software selection; have more tertiary training in software selection; use 'Software Focus' more frequently in the selection of software, and believe teachers to be better trained and more competent in software selection than teachers themselves do.

In the field of Biology there is a reasonable amount of software available for educational use but in the researcher's experience there are few teachers who take the computer into the classroom/laboratory, Teachers will make use of video machines and tape recorders quite happily, but a computer is a piece of apparatus which they are not prepared to use in the classroom/laboratory. This thesis is an attempt to devise an educational package, consisting of a Selection Form and an Evaluation Form, which can be used by teachers to select and evaluate educational software in the field of Biology. The forms were designed specifically for teachers to use in preparation of a computer lesson. The evaluation package also provides the teacher with a means of identifying whether the lesson has achieved its objectives or not. The teacher may also be provided with feedback about the lesson. The data is gathered by means of a questionnaire which the pupils complete. It would appear that teachers are uncertain as regards the purchase of software for their subject from the many catalogues that are available. The evaluation package implemented in this research can be regarded as the beginnings of a data base for the accumulation of information to assist teachers with details on which software to select. Evidence is provided in this thesis for the practical application of the Selection and Evaluation Forms, using Biology software.

Abstract:
The attention directed toward computer software research has been sparse which is quite evident in particular facets such as learning methods, specifically towards tutorials. Some authors have identified various important issues which include cognitive factors, reduction of presentation of superfluous information, and the importance of interaction with software and hardware. The present . study examined two tutorials which were similar except in their level of required user behaviors. Tutorial A required only user manipulation of disk stored data. Tutorial B required the user to enter the data into the computer, design the screen format, and then to manipulate it. It was predicted that the extra task of entering data and designing the screen format would provoke more positive scores for Tutorial B as measured by two independent questionnaires, would require fewer requests for assistance than for those using Tutorial A, and require a comparative duration period to complete. The results obtained supported all hypotheses except for the duration period which took longer for Tutorial B. The implication is that there should be development of improved Tutorial options utilizing research based methods such as these presented.

primary school in Gazimagusa, North Cyprus were used in this study. Control group was taught using a lecture-based traditional instruction and experimental group was taught using educational software, namely Frizbi Mathematics 4. The control group consisted of 26 students where the experimental group consisted of 29 students. The groups were compared on achievement of mathematics, retention, and attitude toward mathematics and computer assisted learning. The study was conducted in spring semester of 2006-2007 academic year and included three units, Multiplication of Natural Numbers, Division of Natural Numbers, and Fractions. Scores on achievement tests were collected three times
at the beginning of the study, immediately after the intervention, and 4 months later. Mathematics attitude scale and computer assisted learning attitude scale were administrated only two times
at the beginning of the study and immediately after the completion of the study. A series of ANOVAs for repeated measures revealed significant difference between the groups on the post achievement tests and attitude scales in favor of experimental group. However, statistically significant differences in favor of treatment group, on the retention tests was attained on the multiplication and division units but not on fractions. The evidence indicates that Frizbi Mathematics 4 for learning and teaching mathematics at the primary school level in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is an effective tool.

Abstract:
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are conditions where a person may exhibit developmental disabilities, significant social, communication and behavioral challenges, and process information differently than people without ASD. The Federal Government guidelines mandate inclusion of all students into the public school facilities. All school age children in the United States are afforded the same opportunities for public education. The goal of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) as a treatment for teaching mathematics to a group of autistic pupils in an elementary school environment. The public later elementary school is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan and had a student enrollment of 488 in grades 3-5 for the 2011-2012 school year (MDE; http://michigan.gov/mde, February 12, 2014). Questionnaires were used to gather feedback from teachers and itinerant staff, including social workers, psychologists and speech and language therapists. Data were gathered using tests developed by teachers and designed to meet state guidelines. Data analysis involved comparing the test scores of ASD pupils taught by CAI to those for pupils taught using conventional teacher-led instruction. The computer-based treatment (TeachTown® software) was compared to the traditional treatment of teacher-led instruction using data from pre- and post-testing as well as observation, and was shown to improve both pupil attentiveness (time on task) as well as math test scores. As schools, educators, staff and parents continue to wrestle with the adverse effects of increased numbers of diagnosed ASD pupils and decreased dollars dedicated to their human teachers, an option seems to lie in the use of CAI software and the focusing of resources in matching pupils to computers. It is recommended that school administration evaluate the cost of CAI and training as an option to monies appropriated to adding more teachers and teacher human aides. It is also recommended that more research be conducted to evaluate the use of CAI software with ASD pupils of larger population size and different socio-economic environments.

Children with autism typically exhibit deficits in behavior and also in visual processing. Development and implementation of visually-cued instructional procedures, combined with electronic technology, have been used successfully to teach children with autism complex behavior chains. This study used photographic activity schedules on computer slideshow software to teach two children with autism to follow computer-mediated cues and engage in four play activities, and to transition between each activity in their homes without the presence of a trained behavior therapist. Results of this study demonstrated that these technologies can be utilized in children's homes to promote computer-mediated play behavior while eliminating the necessary cost of a home behavior therapist to prompt and supervise such activities.

O pensamento computacional tem sido discutido na literatura como uma nova competência para o cidadão do século XXI. Nesse caminho, a inclusão da Ciência da Computação e de linguagens de programação nas escolas têm acontecido em diversos países. O tema perpassa a educação e, consequentemente, a formação de professores. Embora diversas discussões na academia tenham emergido acerca do tema, ainda existem poucos estudos que se dedicam a discutir questões ligadas à formação de professores no cenário nacional. Esta dissertação objetiva analisar as concepções de ensino e aprendizagem presentes em uma plataforma on-line, com o intuito de criar indicadores para a docência que possam nortear processos de formação pedagógica. Para amparar teoricamente este estudo, foram utilizadas as bases teóricas do construtivismo e construcionismo, tendo como expoentes Jean Piaget, Seymour Papert e seus seguidores. Esta pesquisa caracteriza-se como estudo de caso, de cunho exploratório, e tem como fonte de análise a plataforma Code.org. Por se tratar de um estudo de caso, foram elencadas como fontes de evidências postagens de dois tópicos de um fórum, planos de aula e atividades on-line. A metodologia utilizada para a análise das fontes de evidências foi a Análise Textual Discursiva, em que emergiram três grandes categorias: Concepções de Aprendizagem, Aspectos Dificultadores da Aprendizagem e Aspectos Promotores da Aprendizagem. Os resultados obtidos a partir das categorias emergentes evidenciam que as concepções de aprendizagem presentes na plataforma são prioritariamente empiristas, trazendo uma proposta em que os materiais disponíveis para o professor sugerem um modelo de ensino e aprendizagem baseado em uma pedagogia diretiva. Os achados ainda apontam para estratégias de ensino aprendizagem baseadas em atividades on-line, atividades off-line, interação entre pares e, por fim, apresentam aspectos dificultadores para o ensino e a aprendizagem do pensamento computacional, sendo eles tempo, estrutura e dificuldades com TI.
The computational thinking has been discussed in the literature as a new competence for the citizen of the 21st century. In this way, the inclusion of Computer Science and programming languages in schools has been happening in several countries. The theme pervades education and consequently, teacher training. Although several discussions have emerged about the subject in the academy, there are still few studies dedicated to discuss issues related to the teachers training in the national scenario. This dissertation aims to analyze the concepts of teaching and learning present on an online platform, with intent to create indicators for teaching, that may guide pedagogical training processes. In order to support this study theoretically, the theoretical bases of constructivism and constructionism were used, having Jean Piaget, Seymour Papert and their followers as exponents. This research is characterized as an exploratory case study and has the Code.org plataform as source of analysis. As a case study, postings of two forum topics, lesson plans and online activities were listed as sources of evidence. The methodology used for the analysis of the sources of evidence was Discursive Textual Analysis, from which three broad categories emerged: Conceptions of Learning, Difficulting Aspects of Learning and Promoting Aspects of Learning. The obtained results from the emerging categories show that the Conceptions of Learning present in the platform, are primarily empiricists, bringing a purpose in which the available materials for the teacher suggest a teaching and learning model based on a directive pedagogy. The findings still point out to strategies for teaching learning based on online activities, offline activities, interaction between peers, and eventually, show difficulting aspects for teaching and learning of computational thinking, which are: time, structure and difficulties with IT.
