Digital media are pervasive, ubiquitous and mundane constituents of organization. Organized life relies on, and is propelled by, technologies that store, transmit and process data and are based on networked computation. How can we understand and explore the fundamental mediatedness of organization? This article contextualizes and introduces the special issue on ‘The organizational powers of (digital) media’ by staging an encounter between organization theory and media theory. In provoking investigations of the power and effects of technological mediation in its many guises, not least in regard to digital or computational media, this encounter ushers in a ‘medial thought’ of organization.

Abstract:
The use of information technology (IT) in organizations has undergone dramatic changes during the past 30 years. As a result, it has become increasingly common to adopt services rather than traditional systems perspective to more accurately capture contemporary practices. There is, however, a lack of theories that can help us understand, assess, and design information services in organizational contexts. On this backdrop, we combine general notions of information processing options and requirements to outline a contingency theory of organizational use of information services. The theory suggests that information services are configurations of heterogeneous information processing capabilities; these services are evoked by organizational actors to help execute tasks, and evoking different configurations may lead to equally satisfactory outcomes. The theory distinguishes between four types of services computational, adaptive, networking, and collaborative services, and it suggests that organizational actors need portfolios of information services that are suited to the equivocality and uncertainty profile of the information processing they face. The paper defines four types of services and how they relate to information processing requirements; it applies the theory to a study of information services in response to vehicle policing; and it outlines how the theory relates to standardization and unintended consequences of information services. We conclude by discussing the theory and its implications for research and practice.

Abstract:
There is no theory in strategic management and other related fields for identifying decision problems that cannot be solved by organizations using rational analytical technologies of the type typically taught in MBA programs. Furthermore, some and perhaps many scholars in strategic management believe that the alternative of heuristics or “rules of thumb” is little more than crude guesses for decision making when compared to rational analytical technologies. This is reflected in a paucity of research in strategic management on heuristics. I propose a theory of “organizational intractability” based roughly on the metaphor provided by “computational intractability” in computer science. I demonstrate organizational intractability for a common model of the joint strategic planning and resource allocation decision problem. This raises the possibility that heuristics are necessary for deciding many important decisions that are intractable for organizations. This possibility parallels the extensive use of heuristics in artificial intelligence for computationally intractable problems, where heuristics are often the most powerful approach possible. Some important managerial heuristics are documented from both the finance and strategic management literatures. Based on all of this, I discuss some directions for theory of and research on organizational intractability and heuristics in strategic management.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to identify the impact of organizational Envy on organizations' brilliance through the interactive role of intelligent contextual leadership in universities and private colleges in the province of Najaf. The approach was relied on (descriptive - exploratory), and the questionnaire was used as a measurement tool. The study population was the teaching bodies working in universities and private colleges in Najaf, who numbered (811) teaching staff. Whereas the research sample is (257) teachers, and several statistical programs (Smart PLS) (SPSS v.23) have been used to analyze the data and test the primary and sub-hypotheses emanating from it. The results show a significant effect of organizational Envy on organizations' brilliance through the intelligence of contextual leadership, and the results showed acceptance of most of the leading and sub-hypotheses emanating from it.

In past decades organizational citizenship behaviour developed a significant concept in the field a of management and psychology and established an inordinate transaction of consideration in the literature. Job satisfaction is an essential aspect of employee performance and success. Employees who are satisfied will go much beyond their job roles and this will improve organizational effectiveness. The sample size is 309 and data was collected from public sector bank employees through questionnaire. Correlation and regression analysis both were used to test the hypotheses in this study. All the present variables in this research were found to be expressively associated with each other.

Abstract:
In a complex adaptive system, diverse agents perform various actions without adherence to a predefined structure. The achievement of collaborative actions will be the result of continual interactions among them that shape a dynamic network. Agents may form an ad hoc organization based on the dynamic network of interactions for the purpose of achieving a long-term objective, which we termed a Network Organization (NO). Fervent and agile communication on social networking sites provides opportunities for potential issues to trigger individuals into individual actions as well as the attraction and mobilization of like-minded individuals into an NO that is both physically and virtually emergent. Examples are the rapid pace of Arab Spring proliferation and the diffusion rate of the Occupy Movement. We are motivated by a spontaneously formed NO as well as the quality of plasticity that enables the organization to change rapidly to describe an NO. Thus, we present a paradigm that serves as a reference model for organizations of socially networked individuals. This paradigm suggests modular components that can be combined to form an ad hoc network organization of agents. We touch on how this model accounts for external change in an environment through internal adjustment. For the predominant influences of the network substrate in an NO, multiple effects of it have an impact on the NO behaviors and directions. We envisioned several dimensions of such effects to include synergy, social capital, externality, influence, etc. A special focus in this work is measuring synergy and social capital as two predominant network effects. Synergy is perceived as different modalities of compatibility among agents when performing a set of coherent and correspondingly different actions. When agents are under no structural obligation to contribute, synergy is quantified through multiple forms of serendipitous agent chosen benevolence among them. The approach is to measure four types of benevolence and the pursuant synergies stemming from agent interactions. Social capital is another effect of networking that describes the accumulation of positive values of social flow and perceived trust plus abundance of communication over the common topic of NO. We provide measurement of social capital based on an agents’ expected benevolence. We examine those two effects in two different case studies — one case of a virtual organization and another of a real world terrorist organization — that best illustrate the main tenets of our conceptualization.

Um modelo abstracto baseado em agentes é utilizado para estudar a inovação em Sistemas de Informação e em Tecnologia de Informação, no plano organizacional, utilizando uma aproximação sócio-cognitiva. A conclusão do estudo indica que o poder dos profissionais conhecedores de tecnologias de informação na decisão de adopção de uma determinada inovação varia com o nível de concordância de ideias entre eles e os decisores, ao mesmo tempo que depende da taxa de depreciação das transacções, conduzindo a uma forte flutuação de poder quando o ambiente é instável.
An abstract Agent Based Model is used to study Information Systems and Information Technology innovation on an organizational realm, using a socio-cognitive approach. Conclusion is drawn that the power of the knowledge workers in the decision to adopt an IS/IT innovation within an organization varies with the matching level of ideas between them and the top management, while being dependant of the transactions’ depreciation rate, leading to a strong fluctuation of power when the environment is unstable.

AbstractThis paper is about automatic recognition of entities that funded a research work in economics as being expressed in a publication. While many works apply rules and/or regular expressions to candidate sections within the text, we follow a question answering (QA) based approach to identify those passages that are most likely to inform us about funding. With regard to a digital library scenario, we are dealing with three more challenges: confirming that our approach at least outperforms manual indexing, disambiguation of funding organizations by linking their names to authority data, and integrating the generated metadata into a digital library application. Our computational results by means of machine learning techniques show that our QA performs similar to a previous work (AckNER), although we operated on rather small sets of training and test data. While manual indexing is still needed for a gold standard of reliable metadata, the identification of funding entities only worked for a subset of funder names.

Computational tools for aiding design-by-analogy have so far focused on function- and keyword-based retrieval of analogues. Given the critical role of performance and benchmarking in design, there is a need for performance metrics-driven analogy retrieval that is currently unmet. Towards meeting this need, a study has been done to investigate and propose frameworks for organizing the myriad technical performance metrics in engineering design, such as measures of efficiency. Such organizational frameworks are needed for the implementation of a computational tool which can retrieve relevant analogies using performance metrics. The study, which takes a deductive approach, defines a hierarchical taxonomy of performance metrics akin to the functional basis vocabulary of function and flow terms. Its derivation follows from bond graphs, control theory, and Design for X guidelines.
