Abstract:
This article explores the motivations of three enforcers of the Licensing Act of 1662 in regard to their treatment of the illicit Catholic book trade in London during the Restoration. As censors, the Stationers’ Company, the Surveyor of the Press, Roger L'Estrange, and the bishop of London, Henry Compton, were intended to unite the concerns of the book trade, the state and the church. However, each used the Licensing Act to pursue their own interests. Contemporaries and historians have both viewed the act as being unsuccessfully enforced; this article explores whether full enforcement was ever the goal. Using the case of Catholic print, it posits that it was precisely the act's flexibility that encouraged its repeated renewals. Moreover, exploring the print of the Catholic minority in London highlights the differences between the written law and the enforced law. Finally, this article suggests that at times there existed an informal toleration for the printers and booksellers engaged in Catholic book production that enabled books to escape detection and the Catholic book trade to continue despite the Licensing Act.

Abstract:
This article explores the short history of the Cinecenta chain of cinemas that operated in the UK between 1968 and 1979. It was run by Leslie Elliot and developed out of the Compton Group headed by the producers and distributors Tony Tenser and Michael Klinger. The article contends that the negative reputation of Cinecenta (largely a result of the sad decline of the company) as a disreputable purveyor of sex films is inaccurate and that, at least at its inception, the philosophy of the Cinecenta brand was to innovate in relation to its programming ethos, the marketing and promotion of its product exhibited and the design of its cinemas. The article places Cinecenta in the context of film exhibition in the late 1960s and early 1970s – a time of bold innovation, despite declining theatrical ticket sales – and looks for the first time in detail at the films screened as part of Cinecenta’s early schedules. Also discussed is the way in which the Cinecenta project was an attempt at exporting more adventurous film programming to audiences outside central London. The article concludes by suggesting that the more visionary aspects of the Cinecenta project could be useful in rethinking about how we might engage with cinema in the twenty-first century.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the effects of physical processes on multiwavelength variability of intermediate polars. Intermediate polars are binary systems consisting of a white dwarf that accretes matter from a red dwarf. This causes variability in the system’s observed brightness and spectra, making intermediate polars variable stars. The process of inverse Compton scattering was simulated for changing parametres of the system. For the simulation, Monte Carlo methods were used. We found that in the hot post-shock region, photon energies are increased by inverse Compton scattering. The effects vary with changing mass accretion rate, where for higher mass accretion rate, photons are upscattered to higher energies.

We present detailed calculations of the electron thermalization by synchrotron self-absorption accounting for cooling by Compton scattering. For the first time, we solve the coupled kinetic equations for electrons and photons without any approximations on the relevant cross-sections and compute self-consistently the resulting electron and photon distributions. The results presented in this contribution may be applied to the magnetized coronae around galactic black hole accretion disks.

Abstract:
Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is an ideal process to study the internal structure of proton. This exclusive reaction provides access to generalised parton distributions (GPDs), which encode the correlations between longitudinal momentum and transverse position of partons inside the proton. DVCS consists in probing a proton with a virtual photon of high virtuality, in order to produce a single high energy real photon while leaving the proton intact in the final state. At COMPASS at CERN, where two years of data were collected in 2016 and 2017 to measure the DVCS cross section, the virtual photon is produced by scattering of a 160 GeV polarised μ⁺ or μ⁻ beam on a liquid hydrogen target. All particles are detected in the experiment: the incident muon is detected in the beam telescope, the diffracted muon and the real photon are detected in the forward spectrometer and the three calorimeters, while the recoil proton is detected in a time-of-flight detector positioned around the target. In this thesis I present the state of the analysis of the DVCS process on the data collected at COMPASS in 2016. After a reminder of the theoretical and experimental context, I describe the COMPASS experiment. I then detail my work on calibrating the recoil proton detector and determining the the exact position of the 2 cm diameter and 2.5 m long target. In the next section, I study the selection of different physics channels used to systematically control detector quality: Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) which involves the beam-telescope and spectrometer, exclusive ρ⁰ production which requires the addition of the time-of-flight detector and I follow with the first analysis of the exclusive single photon production which depends as well on the calorimetres quality. In a last part, I discuss the necessary steps needed to extract the DVCS cross-section out of this event selection, and present the first results associated to the Monte-Carlo simulation

Abstract:
This thesis introduce my work on transverse and longitudinal non linear dynamics of an electron beam in ThomX, a novel X-ray source based on Compton backscattering. In this work I implemented in simulation code theoretical models to calculate transverse and longitudinal non linear dynamics under Compton back scattering. The processes studied include collective effect such as longitudinal space charge, resistive wall and coherent synchrotron radiation, intra beam scattering. I also implemented a longitudinal feedback algorithm and studied the effect of the feedback's delay in the simulation to explore its effects on beam dynamics. This code allows to perform a full 6D simulation of the beam dynamics in a ring under Compton back scattering taking into account the feedback stabilisation for the 400 000 turns (~ 20 ms) of one injection cycle. One important feature is that this simulation code can be run on a computer farm. Using this code I investigated the electrons dynamics in ThomX and the flux of scattered Compton photons. I analysed the relative contribution of each physical phenomena to the overall beam dynamics and how to mitigate their disruptive effect. As part of my work on longitudinal phase feedback I also measured and analysed properties of the ELETTRA RF cavity to be used on ThomX.

Abstract:
During the next few years experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will continue to explore carefully fundamental high energy physics principles at a an energy domain which has never been reached before. Possible designs for the next-generation lepton Linear Collider (LC) based on e+–e- collisions have already been proposed to perform high precision studies complementary to the LHC. In this framework, there are two large projects: the International Linear Collider (ILC) exploring a centre-of-mass energy range of de s = 0.5 – 1 TeV and the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) expected to operate at s = 0.5 – 3 TeV. The physics programme of the future LC will benefit strongly of colliding both polarised electron and positron beams. This thesis introduces the polarized positron source as one of the key element of the future LC. In this context, the different schemes of the polarized positron source are described highlighting the main issues in this technology. In particular, the main focus is on the Compton based positron source adopted by the CLIC as a preferred option for the future positron source upgrade. In this case, the circularly polarized high energy gamma rays resulting from Compton scattering are directed to a production target where an electromagnetic cascade gives rise to the production of positrons by e+–e- pair conversion. To increase the efficiency of the gamma ray production stage, a multiple collision point line integrated in energy recovery linac is proposed. The simulations of the positron production, capture and primary acceleration allow to estimate the positron production efficiency and provide a simple parametrization of the Compton based polarized positron source in the view of the future LC requirements. The storage ring based Compton source option, so-called Compton ring, is also described. The main constraint of this scheme is given by the beam dynamics resulting in the large energy spread and increased bunch length affecting the gamma ray production rate. An original theoretical contribution is shown to calculate the energy spread induced by Compton scattering. Moreover, an experiment to test the gamma ray production by Compton scattering using a state-of-art laser system developed at LAL has been conducted in the framework of the "MightyLaser" project at the ATF, KEK. The experimental layout as well as the main results obtained are discussed in details. The studies carried out in this thesis show that the polarized positron source based on Compton scattering is a promising candidate for the future LC polarized positron source. To attain the required performance, further developments and R&D in field of the high power laser systems, optical cavities and high current electron accelerators such as the energy recovery linacs should be pursued in the future

Abstract:
X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering process produce tunable near-monochromatic and highly directive X-rays. Recent advances in laser and accelerator technologies make the development of such very compact hard X-ray sources possible. These sources are particularly attractive in several applications such as medical imaging, cancer therapy or culture-heritage study, currently performed in size-limited infrastructures. The main objective of this thesis is the development of an inverse Compton scattering source on the ELSA linac of CEA at Bruyères-le-Châtel as a calibration tool for ultra-fast detectors.A non-resonant cavity was designed to multiply the number of emitted X-ray photons. The laser optical path is folded to pile-up laser pulses at the interaction point, thus increasing the interaction probability. Another way of optimizing the X-ray yield consists in increasing the electron bunch density at the interaction point, which is strongly dependent on the electron energy. A facility up-grade was performed to increase the electron energy up to 30 MeV. The X-ray output gain obtained thanks to this system was measured and compared with calculated expectations and 3D PIC simulations

Abstract:
In this thesis we present the R&D of a Compton Camera (CC) for small object imaging. The CC concept requires two detectors to obtain the incoming direction of the gamma ray. This approach, sometimes named ``Electronic Collimation,'' differs from the usual technique that employs collimators for physically selecting gamma-rays of a given direction. This solution offers the advantage of much greater sensitivity and hence smaller doses. We propose a novel design, which uses two similar Position Sensitive Photomultipliers (Hamamatsu 8500) coupled to different scintillators (one plastic and one inorganic). Assets of just one kind of detector are the simplicity of design and operation. Along the experimental apparatus we present our original algorithm for image reconstruction, that was tested with a Geant4 Monte Carlo code. Employed on experimental data, we obtained a resolution of 6 mm, which is suitable for small animal imaging (such as rats or rabbits) and for small human organs imaging (thyroid and prostate). The prototype was designed to be a compact modular element that can be extended placing more similar detectors side by side

Abstract:
The retail industry is today characterized by downward price pressure, and the increasedcompetition in the industry has led to pressure on profit margins. Purchasing and supply chainmanagement have become areas of increased strategic importance and play a crucial role inthe business performance. This study aims to extend previous literature in these fields byproviding the existing research with an empirical study on how the purchasing strategy canincorporate a total cost perspective of the supply chain. The purpose of this study was to suggest aspects to incorporate in the purchasing strategywith the objective to consider a total cost perspective of the supply chain. This was donethrough conducting an empirical case study at a Swedish middle sized retail company, bycollecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data through interviews, meetingsand internal databases. Challenges that prohibit the case company to apply a total costperspective were identified in the purchasing process and a total cost model was built tovisualize how these affect total costs. Our findings show that there are six challenges thatprohibit the case company to include the total cost perspective in the purchasing process; theinability to reach minimum order quantities (MOQ), production specific requirements, thedifficulty to combine order suggestions on related stock keeping units (SKU), an uneven flowof orders to suppliers, inefficient time supply period and an inability to coordinate transports.Three aspects were identified as root causes for these challenges and suggested to the casecompany to incorporate in their purchasing strategy to enable the management of total costs inthe supply chain. The aspects are flexible time supply periods, internal and externalinformation sharing and coordination of transport. Furthermore, this research also gives anunderstanding of how the formation of the private label assortment fuels the challenges thatprohibit the company to take a total cost perspective.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The failure of the international coffee agreement to produce the desired price stability has encouraged the growth of a coffee futures market, of which the principal function is to provide a hedge against price risk. It also serves a s a relay for information and has a stabilizing effect on cash market prices. Producer countries participate little in futures transactions, which are frequently considered purely speculative. Taking the example of the Paris coffee market, the author analyzes the main functions of futures markets and their utility for industry participants

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
