Abstract:
Environmental DNA (eDNA), i.e. DNA released in the environment by any living form, represents a formidable opportunity to gather high-throughput and standard information on the distribution or feeding habits of species. It has therefore great potential for applications in ecology and biodiversity management. However, this research field is fast-moving, involves different areas of expertise and currently lacks standard approaches, which calls for an up-to-date and comprehensive synthesis. Environmental DNA for biodiversity research and monitoring covers current methods based on eDNA, with a particular focus on “eDNA metabarcoding”. Intended for scientists and managers, it provides the background information to allow the design of sound experiments. It revisits all steps necessary to produce high-quality metabarcoding data such as sampling, metabarcode design, optimization of PCR and sequencing protocols, as well as analysis of large sequencing datasets. All these different steps are presented by discussing the potential and current challenges of eDNA-based approaches to infer parameters on biodiversity or ecological processes. The last chapters of this book review how DNA metabarcoding has been used so far to unravel novel patterns of diversity in space and time, to detect particular species, and to answer new ecological questions in various ecosystems and for various organisms. Environmental DNA for biodiversity research and monitoring constitutes an essential reading for all graduate students, researchers and practitioners who do not have a strong background in molecular genetics and who are willing to use eDNA approaches in ecology and biomonitoring.

Abstract:
Abstract This second edition of the Textbook of Children’s Environmental Health offers an authoritative and comprehensive guide to the field of children’s environmental health. Children are exquisitely sensitive to hazards in the environment. They have unique vulnerabilities that have no counterpart in adult life. Especially during “windows of susceptibility” in early development, exposures to even minute quantities of toxic chemicals and other environmental hazards can trigger cellular changes that result in disease and disability in infancy, childhood, and across the entire span of human life. Edited by two pediatricians who are internationally recognized pioneers, the volume presents information on the chemical, physical, biological and societal hazards that confront children in today’s world: pesticides, indoor and outdoor air pollution, lead, molds, arsenic, phthalates, bisphenol A, brominated flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, ionizing radiation, electromagnetic fields, and the built environment. It presents carefully documented data on rising rates of disease in children, and it provides a critical summary of new research linking pediatric disease with environmental exposures. It explores the cellular, molecular, and epigenetic mechanisms underlying diseases of environmental origin. At every stage, this volume combines theory with practice and translates scientific findings into evidence-based strategies for the prevention and control of environmental hazards that cause disease in children.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the importance of archiving the data. As well as regulatory advice the requirements of the most useful reference guide, ISO11799, is reviewed. Practical advice on issues such as location, storage, security, and environmental controls is given. The management of the archive from preparation to transfer of data is described. Methods of indexing and cataloguing together with tracking are detailed and systems for retrieval of data are explored. The role of the archivist in audits and inspections is discussed as the content of the TMF will be assessed during audit to ensure a clear audit trail is maintained. Retention times for essential documents are reviewed in the EU the regulation stipulates that data has to be kept for 25 years. As more and more information has to be archived the use of off-site or commercial archives is becoming more common and the additional requirements for a third party service provider are described. The introduction of eArchiving and the associated problems with long term storage of electronic data are discussed along with the various methods that may be used. The FDA issued guidance for electronic data and compliance with this guidance, CFR21 part 11, is vital. CFR 21 part 11 is widely followed within Europe and the standard is frequently referred to by the regulatory inspectors.

Abstract:
This guidebook is a must-have resource for anyone teaching a television production class or running a morning news show at the elementary, middle, or high school level. Teaching a television production class is a real challenge, especially when working with the typical budget and time limitations of most elementary, middle, or high school curricula. Beyond the technical aspects of teaching this subject, what is the best way to keep students engaged and challenged while teaching them skills that will help make them college and career ready? Spanning lesson plans, video production activities, assessment, and more, this book supplies a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to teaching a television production class, using whatever equipment is readily available. It focuses on the critical aspects of how to teach television production and organize lessons, rather than the quickly evolving details of what equipment or editing software to use. The authors also provide lessons on creating and executing a daily newscast show, how to evaluate that show and collect school-wide data for further evaluation and improvement, and how to archive and mount these productions on the school website.

Abstract:
This is the first book to present a comprehensive, up to date overview of archaeological and environmental data from the eastern Mediterranean world around 6000 BC. It brings together the research of an international team of scholars who have excavated at key Neolithic and Chalcolithic sites in Syria, Anatolia, Greece, and the Balkans. Collectively, their essays conceptualize and enable a deeper understanding of times of transition and changes in the archaeological record. Overcoming the terminological and chronological differences between the Near East and Europe, the volume expands from studies of individual societies into regional views and diachronic analyses. It enables researchers to compare archaeological data and analysis from across the region, and offers a new understanding of the importance of this archaeological story to broader, high-impact questions pertinent to climate and culture change.

Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53681/2022.i01/01.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this work was to characterize agricultural and livestock holdings in the regions of Castilla and León (Salamanca and Zamora) in Spain and the Centro Region in Portugal. In order to carry out this work, the available statistical databases were used, according to the themes related to the social, economic, environmental and technological structure. Thus, it was intended to deepen aspects such as the use of energy, use/treatment of agricultural wastes, soil fertilization systems, management of water resources, mobilization practices, among others, in order to have a comprehensive view of these regions as a background information to find agronomic sustainable solutions. This characterization was carried out based on the NUT III, as it offers greater availability of statistical data. In the case of Spain, the NUT III territorial base is considered to be very vast, and it was preferable to carry out this work with some data obtained from agricultural areas. However, statistical data are not available for all these areas under consideration. Even so, in some cases municipal data are presented, which are considered to be more representative. This book consists of two parts, the first describes the state of the art in the cooperation area of Castile and León and the second part in the Central Region of Portugal. The present work was supported by the Interrreg projects 0340_SYMBIOSIS_3_E and 0745_SYMBIOSIS_II_3_E. Thus, the publication is bilingual with texts written in Portuguese or Spanish.

Abstract:
This chapter places public health informatics within a public health context. An understanding of PHI must be built on the perspective of public health as the health of populations. In LMICs it is closely related to an understanding of the primary healthcare approach, and the role and functions of public health systems, including the measurement of health status and equity, the effective coverage of different health programmes, and the utilization of different health services. This requires an understanding of the social and environmental determinants of healthcare, which need relevant data from other sectors as well. The architecture and development of public health informatics varies across nations and is path-dependent and context-specific. Many have evolved as monitoring support to externally financed vertical programmes, some as support for comprehensive primary health programmes and some from support systems for health insurance. The current information needs of health systems, transcends their respective origins, and requires both individual-based clinical information and aggregate population-based data.

Abstract:
Managing aggression is a challenge for psychiatry in all settings. Recognizing opportunities for appropriate assessment and intervention in correctional settings is an important component of correctional psychiatry. Studies reflect significant risks of violence for both correctional officers and inmates. Although prison homicides occur at rates below estimated community homicide rates, the rate of non-lethal violence is substantial. The data for assault are less clear, as definitions of what constitutes assault vary. Inmate-on-inmate assault has been estimated to range from 2 per 1000 inmates to as high as 200 per 1000 inmates. However assault is defined, correctional officers who have been the target of offender violence have elevated risk of emotional exhaustion and burnout. Effectively addressing aggression requires a thoughtful and comprehensive approach that may incorporate elements of environmental management, evaluation of potential motivating factors, differential diagnosis, and a coordinated intervention. This always involves includes effective communication among stakeholders including the patient. Recommended milieu changes and psychotherapeutic and / or pharmacologic interventions need to be explicitly defined; available data are described in this chapter. Consistent oversight and follow up to measure the effects of each component of the intervention(s) is critical, as aggressive behavior may be both habitual and episodic. This chapter reviews the factors that contribute to the broad range of assaultive behavior observed in correctional settings, and some of the pragmatic issues and opportunities for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of aggressive behaviors, both impulsive and predatory.

Abstract:
Queensland is home to 70% of Australia’s native mammals (226 species), over 70% of native birds (630 species), just over half of the nation’s native reptiles (485) and native frogs (127), and more than 11 000 native plant species. Hundreds of these have a threatened status in Queensland. In order for Queensland to maintain and recover a healthy biodiversity we must address the serious problems faced by our natural environment – habitat loss, inappropriate land management, change in fire regimes, pollution of natural resources, proliferation of invasive species and climate change. This book features up-to-date distribution data, photos and maps for most of Queensland’s threatened animals. It also includes a comprehensive list of resources, with key state, national and international organisations involved in the recovery and management of threatened species. Queensland's Threatened Animals will provide vital information to scientists, educators, business entities, government agencies, students, community groups, environmental NGOs, regional NRMs and potential volunteers.

Abstract:
The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program is, in a sense, an experiment to transform the nature of science, and represents one of the most effective mechanisms for catalyzing comprehensive site-based research that is collaborative, multidisciplinary, and long-term in nature. The scientific contributions of the Program are prodigious, but the broader impacts of participation have not been examined in a formal way. This book captures the consequences of participation in the Program on the perspectives, attitudes, and practices of environmental scientists. The edited volume comprises three sections. The first section includes two chapters that provide an overview of the history, goals, mission, and inner workings of the LTER network of sites. The second section comprises three dozen retrospective essays by scientists, data managers or educators who represent a broad spectrum of LTER sites from deserts to tropical forests and from arctic to marine ecosystems. Each essay addresses the same series of probing questions to uncover the extent to which participation has affected the ways that scientists conduct research, educate students, or provide outreach to the public. The final section encompasses 5 chapters, whose authors are biophysical scientists, historians, behavioral scientists, or social scientists. This section analyzes, integrates, or synthesizes the content of the previous chapters from multiple perspectives and uncovers emergent themes and future directions.

Abstract:
An authoritative, comprehensive, and highly accessible assessment of the happiest and least happy countries and cities in the world, as well as of the happiest and least happy cities and states in the United States. Which are the happiest countries in the world and which nations are the least contented? Which cities in the world are considered the happiest and unhappiest? Which American cities and states are at the top of the list and which ones rank poorly? Presenting findings that are based on solid data and authoritative information, this book offers a bold take on the geography of happiness around the world–and presents results that are often unexpected. It enables readers to make informed cross-cultural comparisons between countries and world cities, and uniquely synthesizes global information in a way that allows us answer the important question: ""What makes us happy?"" A book like no other, Global Happiness: A Guide to the Most Contented (and Discontented) Places around the Globe tackles the complex equation of determining what places offer the happiest living experiences by considering quality of life, prospects for the future, social relations, confidence in good government, and many other factors that together constitute critical differences in living experience. The author–a professor of geography and urban studies as well as a world traveler–also takes into account the current events, politics, and environmental situations of specific regions, states, and cities, and considers what residents of the cities and countries say about their own places to derive accurate and fair assessments.

PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES FOR GENETIC TECHNOLOGIES: TO THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF PUSHKIN LABORATORIES OF VIR. N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30901/978-5-907145-84-9.

Full text
Abstract:
The program and abstracts of the All-Russian Conference Plant Genetic Resources for Genetic Technologies: To the 100th Anniversary of Pushkin Laboratories of VIR are presented. The conference was held at VIR on June 22–23, 2022, under Agreement No 075-15-2021-1050 of Sept. 28, 2021 (hereinafter: Event/Conference). The new technological setup aimed at the development of bioeconomy increases the demand for bioresource collections (BRC), including collections of plant genetic resources. Currently, new approaches to collection management and studying are being actively introduced. The foundations for the work with collections of plant genetic resources were laid 100 years ago by Nikolai Vavilov. On May 20, 1922, the Central Breeding and Genetic Station (since 1939: Pushkin Laboratories of VIR) was organized in Detskoye Selo (Pushkin) as one of the sites for environmental and geographical testing of the collection accessions. At the same time, this experimental site became the core element for the development of VIR's methodological divisions whose aim was comprehensive studying of accessions using the methods of genetics, physiology, anatomy, cytology, biochemistry, and technological assessment. The objective of the Conference was to highlight the full scope of modern trends in the work with collections of plant genetic resources and their application in fundamental science and applied sectors of economy. The issues of conservation, integrated studying (including comprehensive characterization and genetic certification) and utilization of crop genetic resources and their wild relatives were discussed. Aspects of inventorying and development of uniform principles for BRC management were also considered. The thematic areas of the Conference included: Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources Collections, Study of Plant Genetic Resources, and Applied Research on Plant Genetic Resources. This edition also contains the abstracts of presentations prepared by heads of departments, employees and veterans of VIR, showing the activities of the Institute's departments and laboratories for 100 years – up to the present time. Addressed to a wide range of experts in the field of the work with bioresource collections, including students, postgraduate students and young scientists under the age of 39. Abstracts are published in the authors' initial versions. The authors (co-authors) of the published abstracts are responsible for the impartiality and reliability of the data presented. Wang, James C. F. Handbook on Ocean Politics and Law. Greenwood, 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400661631.

Full text
Abstract:
The first single-volume reference of its kind, this comprehensive handbook provides background information and analysis on the full range of contemporary ocean use issues. Coverage includes the development of ocean law, the evolving uses of oceans, data on living and non-living ocean resources, the environmental impact of pollution, and competing national claims over ocean exploration. The volume also summarizes the most current research available on the uses of oceans, incorporates the salient portions of the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention in the topical surveys and analyses presented, and discusses all of the other major international conventions that have dealt with global ocean or marine affairs. Students, researchers, and agency staff concerned with the political and legal dimensions of ocean use will find this an indispensable source. The handbook begins with an overview of the world's oceans and their physical and geographic features. The next two chapters survey the international conferences that have been held on ocean use and explore the historical development of international principles on the law of the sea. Ocean resources and their economic and political management form the focus of the following four chapters, with separate chapters on living and non-living resources and deep seabed mining. The final chapters address ocean environmental protection and pollution prevention and the implications of various uses of the ocean: military, navigation and transport, and marine scientific research. The text is accompanied by numerous charts and tables, end-of-chapter references, and seven appendixes which contain valuable supplemental information such as a chronological list of conventions and treaties on the law of the sea, national legislation on exclusive economic zones, bilateral fishery agreements, and more.

Full text
Abstract:
Public health is fundamentally concerned with promoting the health of populations through the prevention of disease and injury. It is, at its core, a moral endeavor, because the end it seeks is the advancement of human well-being. Vexing ethics issues are inherent in all aspects of public health practice and policy. They exist in top-of-the-news stories like infectious disease outbreaks and vaccine hesitancy, health disparities, and in more routine assessments of population health needs, data collection, program evaluation, and policy development. They may be distinctive or shared across diverse fields, such as environmental health, nutrition programs and policy, injury prevention, communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and reproductive health. This volume represents the first comprehensive examination of public health ethics in the United States and globally. The volume editors recruited top public health professionals, policy experts, and scholars in public health and ethics fields to offer varied perspectives on the diversity of the issues that define public health ethics. The volume begins with two sections examining the crosscutting conceptual foundations, ethical tensions, and ethical frameworks of and for public health and how public health does its work. It then proceeds topically, with thirteen sections analyzing the application of public health ethics considerations and approaches across the broad range of subject areas. While the fifteen sections can serve to orient the reader within a specific field, each of the more than seventy chapters is designed to serve as a stand-alone contribution. The approach makes the book, its sections, and individual chapters useful as part of course materials, as well as a seminal reference for students, scholars, and public health professionals.
