Environmental DNA (eDNA), i.e. DNA released in the environment by any living form, represents a formidable opportunity to gather high-throughput and standard information on the distribution or feeding habits of species. It has therefore great potential for applications in ecology and biodiversity management. However, this research field is fast-moving, involves different areas of expertise and currently lacks standard approaches, which calls for an up-to-date and comprehensive synthesis. Environmental DNA for biodiversity research and monitoring covers current methods based on eDNA, with a particular focus on “eDNA metabarcoding”. Intended for scientists and managers, it provides the background information to allow the design of sound experiments. It revisits all steps necessary to produce high-quality metabarcoding data such as sampling, metabarcode design, optimization of PCR and sequencing protocols, as well as analysis of large sequencing datasets. All these different steps are presented by discussing the potential and current challenges of eDNA-based approaches to infer parameters on biodiversity or ecological processes. The last chapters of this book review how DNA metabarcoding has been used so far to unravel novel patterns of diversity in space and time, to detect particular species, and to answer new ecological questions in various ecosystems and for various organisms. Environmental DNA for biodiversity research and monitoring constitutes an essential reading for all graduate students, researchers and practitioners who do not have a strong background in molecular genetics and who are willing to use eDNA approaches in ecology and biomonitoring.

This chapter discusses the importance of archiving the data. As well as regulatory advice the requirements of the most useful reference guide, ISO11799, is reviewed. Practical advice on issues such as location, storage, security, and environmental controls is given. The management of the archive from preparation to transfer of data is described. Methods of indexing and cataloguing together with tracking are detailed and systems for retrieval of data are explored. The role of the archivist in audits and inspections is discussed as the content of the TMF will be assessed during audit to ensure a clear audit trail is maintained. Retention times for essential documents are reviewed in the EU the regulation stipulates that data has to be kept for 25 years. As more and more information has to be archived the use of off-site or commercial archives is becoming more common and the additional requirements for a third party service provider are described. The introduction of eArchiving and the associated problems with long term storage of electronic data are discussed along with the various methods that may be used. The FDA issued guidance for electronic data and compliance with this guidance, CFR21 part 11, is vital. CFR 21 part 11 is widely followed within Europe and the standard is frequently referred to by the regulatory inspectors.

The objective of this work was to characterize agricultural and livestock holdings in the regions of Castilla and León (Salamanca and Zamora) in Spain and the Centro Region in Portugal. In order to carry out this work, the available statistical databases were used, according to the themes related to the social, economic, environmental and technological structure. Thus, it was intended to deepen aspects such as the use of energy, use/treatment of agricultural wastes, soil fertilization systems, management of water resources, mobilization practices, among others, in order to have a comprehensive view of these regions as a background information to find agronomic sustainable solutions. This characterization was carried out based on the NUT III, as it offers greater availability of statistical data. In the case of Spain, the NUT III territorial base is considered to be very vast, and it was preferable to carry out this work with some data obtained from agricultural areas. However, statistical data are not available for all these areas under consideration. Even so, in some cases municipal data are presented, which are considered to be more representative. This book consists of two parts, the first describes the state of the art in the cooperation area of Castile and León and the second part in the Central Region of Portugal. The present work was supported by the Interrreg projects 0340_SYMBIOSIS_3_E and 0745_SYMBIOSIS_II_3_E. Thus, the publication is bilingual with texts written in Portuguese or Spanish.

This chapter places public health informatics within a public health context. An understanding of PHI must be built on the perspective of public health as the health of populations. In LMICs it is closely related to an understanding of the primary healthcare approach, and the role and functions of public health systems, including the measurement of health status and equity, the effective coverage of different health programmes, and the utilization of different health services. This requires an understanding of the social and environmental determinants of healthcare, which need relevant data from other sectors as well. The architecture and development of public health informatics varies across nations and is path-dependent and context-specific. Many have evolved as monitoring support to externally financed vertical programmes, some as support for comprehensive primary health programmes and some from support systems for health insurance. The current information needs of health systems, transcends their respective origins, and requires both individual-based clinical information and aggregate population-based data.

Recognizing opportunities for appropriate assessment and intervention in correctional settings is an important component of correctional psychiatry. Studies reflect significant risks of violence for both correctional officers and inmates. Although prison homicides occur at rates below estimated community homicide rates, the rate of non-lethal violence is substantial. The data for assault are less clear, as definitions of what constitutes assault vary. Inmate-on-inmate assault has been estimated to range from 2 per 1000 inmates to as high as 200 per 1000 inmates. However assault is defined, correctional officers who have been the target of offender violence have elevated risk of emotional exhaustion and burnout. Effectively addressing aggression requires a thoughtful and comprehensive approach that may incorporate elements of environmental management, evaluation of potential motivating factors, differential diagnosis, and a coordinated intervention. This always involves includes effective communication among stakeholders including the patient. Recommended milieu changes and psychotherapeutic and / or pharmacologic interventions need to be explicitly defined; available data are described in this chapter. Consistent oversight and follow up to measure the effects of each component of the intervention(s) is critical, as aggressive behavior may be both habitual and episodic. This chapter reviews the factors that contribute to the broad range of assaultive behavior observed in correctional settings, and some of the pragmatic issues and opportunities for assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of aggressive behaviors, both impulsive and predatory.

The Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program is, in a sense, an experiment to transform the nature of science, and represents one of the most effective mechanisms for catalyzing comprehensive site-based research that is collaborative, multidisciplinary, and long-term in nature. The scientific contributions of the Program are prodigious, but the broader impacts of participation have not been examined in a formal way. This book captures the consequences of participation in the Program on the perspectives, attitudes, and practices of environmental scientists. The edited volume comprises three sections. The first section includes two chapters that provide an overview of the history, goals, mission, and inner workings of the LTER network of sites. The second section comprises three dozen retrospective essays by scientists, data managers or educators who represent a broad spectrum of LTER sites from deserts to tropical forests and from arctic to marine ecosystems. Each essay addresses the same series of probing questions to uncover the extent to which participation has affected the ways that scientists conduct research, educate students, or provide outreach to the public. The program and abstracts of the All-Russian Conference Plant Genetic Resources for Genetic Technologies: To the 100th Anniversary of Pushkin Laboratories of VIR are presented. The conference was held at VIR on June 22–23, 2022, under Agreement No 075-15-2021-1050 of Sept. 28, 2021 (hereinafter: Event/Conference). The new technological setup aimed at the development of bioeconomy increases the demand for bioresource collections (BRC), including collections of plant genetic resources. Currently, new approaches to collection management and studying are being actively introduced. The foundations for the work with collections of plant genetic resources were laid 100 years ago by Nikolai Vavilov. On May 20, 1922, the Central Breeding and Genetic Station (since 1939: Pushkin Laboratories of VIR) was organized in Detskoye Selo (Pushkin) as one of the sites for environmental and geographical testing of the collection accessions. At the same time, this experimental site became the core element for the development of VIR's methodological divisions whose aim was comprehensive studying of accessions using the methods of genetics, physiology, anatomy, cytology, biochemistry, and technological assessment. The objective of the Conference was to highlight the full scope of modern trends in the work with collections of plant genetic resources and their application in fundamental science and applied sectors of economy. The issues of conservation, integrated studying (including comprehensive characterization and genetic certification) and utilization of crop genetic resources and their wild relatives were discussed. Aspects of inventorying and development of uniform principles for BRC management were also considered. The thematic areas of the Conference included: Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources Collections, Study of Plant Genetic Resources, and Applied Research on Plant Genetic Resources. This edition also contains the abstracts of presentations prepared by heads of departments, employees and veterans of VIR, showing the activities of the Institute's departments and laboratories for 100 years – up to the present time. Addressed to a wide range of experts in the field of the work with bioresource collections, including students, postgraduate students and young scientists under the age of 39.
