Baiting with sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) to protect lambs (Ovis aries) from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes L.) has become more frequent in NSW and other parts of Australia during the last 10 years despite the lack of reported evidence evaluating the effects of fox baiting on lamb survival. Picornaviridae are among the most diverse and oldest known viral families that include many important pathogens of humans and animals. They are small, icosahedral (+)ssRNA viruses, causing a variety of diseases, such as encephalitis, and poliomyelitis. Vaccines are available for poliovirus, hepatitis A virus and foot-and mouth disease virus, but no effective prophylaxis is implemented for other picornaviruses. Thus far, anti-viral research has focused on the capsid, whereas inhibitors targeting non-structural proteins (i.e. proteases, helicases, polymerases) have remained largely unaddressed.

On the one hand, we proved that AICAR induces apoptosis in an AMPK- and p53-independent manner in mouse embryonic fibroblasts. The analysis of the BCL-2 family members allowed the identification of the BH3-only proteins BIM and NOXA as required for apoptosis induction by AICAR. Ruthenium (II) polypyridine complexes in general have been extensively studied because of their unique redox and photochemical properties. A typical example of such complexes is tris(2,2’-bipyridyl) ruthenium (II). In this study, this complex was synthesized and then characterized using electronic spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.
