Abstract:
Many reactions in solution involve acids and bases, and so this chapter examines these important reactions in detail. Topics covered include the ionisation of water, pH, pOH, acids and bases, conjugate acids and conjugate bases, acid and base dissociation constants, the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, the Henderson-Hasselbalch approximation, buffer solutions and buffer capacity. A unique feature of this chapter is a ‘first principles’ analysis of how a reaction buffered at a particular pH achieves an equilibrium composition different from that of the same reaction taking place in an unbuffered solution. This introduces some concepts which are important in understanding the biochemical standard state, as required for Chapter 23.

Abstract:
The commencement of chapter 11 proceedings in respect of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc (LBHI) triggered the downfall of its intricate web of group companies around the world. The Dutch incorporated second-tier subsidiary Lehman Brothers Treasury Co BV (LBT) was declared bankrupt on 8 October 2008 – the largest bankruptcy case in Dutch history and unprecedented in Dutch insolvency practice. Various new features were tested (and approved by the court) in the LBT proceedings which could provide important lessons for future large insolvency cases of issuers of debt securities on the international capital markets. Despite the fact that the Dutch Bankruptcy Code dates back more than a century ago and was not designed for several complex issues which arose in the LBT proceedings, the chapter argues, it did facilitate a tailored made solution for an effective and transparent settlement of the affairs of the main treasury entity of the Lehman Brothers group.

Himmelfarb, Jonathan. Haemodialysis. Edited by Jonathan Himmelfarb. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199592548.003.0255.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of haemodialysis, a medical procedure where the blood volume circulates extracorporeally through a dialysis membrane and is returned to the patient via the vasculature, during which time there is diffusion of molecules in solution along an electrochemical concentration gradient. In clinical haemodialysis, the semipermeable dialysis membrane separates the blood from a solution of prescribed electrolyte composition known as the dialysate. The use of long-term dialysis for treatment of irreversible kidney failure and amelioration of the uraemic syndrome dates back to the 1960s, when Belding Scribner and colleagues developed a repeatedly usable vascular access device using Teflon-coated plastic tubes. These and many other pioneering advances led to early successes in carefully selected populations of predominantly young, relatively fit patients with kidney failure. This in turn prompted a dramatic expansion of the use of haemodialysis as a life-sustaining treatment, and today haemodialysis is the most frequently used treatment for end-stage kidney disease in the United States, Europe, and worldwide. The expanded use of haemodialysis as kidney replacement therapy transformed the profession of nephrology and the care of people living with severe kidney disease, and also created a new field of medical science, which has been referred to as ‘the physiology of the artificial kidney’.

Abstract:
In this work magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized through the precipitation method from an aqueous ferrous sulfate solution under ultrasound. A 23 factorial design in duplicate was carried out to determine the best synthesis conditions and to obtain the smallest crystallite sizes. Selected conditions were ultrasound frequency of 593 kHz for 40 min in 1.0 mol L-1 NaOH medium. Average crystallite sizes were of the order of 25 nm. The phase obtained was identified by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) as magnetite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed polydisperse particles with dimensions around 57 nm, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed average particle diameters around 29 nm, in the same order of magnitude of the crystallite size determined with Scherrer’s equation. These magnetic nanoparticles were used to obtain nanocomposites with polyaniline (PAni). The material was prepared under exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) or under heating, from dispersions of the nanoparticles in an acidic solution of aniline. Unlike other synthetic routes reported elsewhere, this new route does not utilize any additional oxidizing agent. XRD analysis showed the appearance of a second crystalline phase in all the PAni-Fe3O4 composites, which was indexed as goethite. Furthermore, the crystallite size decreases nearly 50 % with the increase in the synthesis time. This size decrease suggests that the nanoparticles are consumed during the synthesis. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the amount of polyaniline increases with synthesis time. The nanocomposite electric conductivity was around 10-5 S cm-1, nearly one order of magnitude higher than for pure magnetite. Conductivity varied with the amount of PAni in the system, suggesting that the electric properties of the nanocomposites can be tuned according to their composition. Under an external magnetic field the nanocomposites showed hysteresis behavior at room temperature, characteristic of ferromagnetic materials. Saturation magnetization (MS) for pure magnetite was ~ 74 emu g-1. For the PAni-Fe3O4 nanocomposites, MS ranged from ~ 2 to 70 emu g-1, depending on the synthesis conditions. This suggests that composition can also be used to control the magnetic properties of the material.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the programme Pompey implemented as consul in 70 to address the related problems of exploitation in the provinces and corruption in the courts. It is suggested that Pompey did not intend to change the composition of juries. Instead, his solution consisted of the election of censors to remove the senate’s most corrupt members; a call for stricter trials, starting with the ‘show trial’ of Gaius Verres; and the promotion of better standards of provincial governance. The key evidence comes from Cicero’s Verrines: Pompey backed the prosecution of Verres both for the sake of his Sicilian clients and as part of his broader programme for the provinces, and Cicero’s speeches reflect Pompey’s policy. Pompey’s refusal of his consular province and legislation subsequently put in place by the tribunes of 67 can also be understood in connection with Pompey’s programme of provincial reform.

Abstract:
Crystalline Imperfections: Key Topics in Materials Science and Engineering deals with the practical aspects of compositional and structural imperfections, how they are controlled, and how they influence material properties and behaviors. The book is organized into two sections, the first of which is a tutorial on compositional impurities and different types of crystal lattice defects. The section that follows, the focal point of the book, furthers the learning process by guiding readers through a series of real-world problems and their respective solutions. The content of this book and its presentation format are particularly well suited for early-career engineers who would like to sharpen their understanding of physical metallurgy and its application in design and manufacturing.

Cook, Nicholas, Peter Johnson, and Hans Zender. Theory into practice. Leuven University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.11116/9789461664327.

Full text
Abstract:
'Theory into Practice. Composition, Performance and the Listening Experience' is the second publication in the series 'Collected Writings of the Orpheus Institute'. The series comprises articles concerning the activities of the Orpheus Institute. The centrale theme of this book is the relationship between the reflections about and the relization of a musical composition. In his paper Words about Music, or Analysis versus Performance, Nicholas Cook states that words and music can never be aligned exactly with one another. He embarks on a quest for models of the relationship between analytical conception and performance that are more challenging than those in general currency. Peter Johnson's article Performance and the Listening Experience: Bach's 'Erbarme dich' shows that a performance is an element within the intentionality of the work itself. He looks for scientific methods capable of proving the artisticity of a performance. The composer Hans Zender, in his A Road Map for Orpheus?, states that a composer must be capable of questioning obvious basic principles (such as equal temperament) and finding creative solutions.

Abstract:
The penultimate chapter explores a major conjunction between literary and music aesthetics in the period. The first section shows how Olson and the New York School of music began to address, in 1950, the problem of the artist’s unwanted presence in the work of art. The following sections reveal that Olson and the composers found similar formal solutions to this problem, foregrounding individual sound units with new forms of spatial notation that relied upon ‘composition by field’. Anxieties about the interfering ‘ego’ were rooted, the chapter suggests, in contemporary critiques of the organizing, Enlightenment intellect and reflected the avant-garde’s commitment to uncertainty and immediacy.

Brooks, Charlie R. Principles of the Heat Treatment of Plain Carbon and Low Alloy Steels. ASM International, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.31399/asm.tb.phtpclas.9781627083539.

Full text
Abstract:
Principles of the Heat Treatment of Plain Carbon and Low Alloy Steels provides readers with a working knowledge of heat treat processes and how they can be tailored to optimize the microstructure and properties of steel. The book includes chapters on quenching, tempering, austenitization, and annealing as well as hardenability, modeling, and common treatments for structural steels. The first few chapters lay essential groundwork for understanding how time, temperature, and prior processing history influence the formation of Fe-C phases and the composition and morphology of the microconstituents found in carbon and low alloy steels. The chapter on structural steels explains how deformation and thermal processing are used for the development and control of grain size and how carbon and manganese content influence toughness, hardness, and strength. The final chapter presents worked solutions to real-world problems related to hardenability, quenching, grain size, alloy content, treatment times and temperatures, and the determination of property ranges. The book includes an extensive amount of composition and property data, a glossary of terms, and outlines for various calculation methods. Abstract:
Sondheim provided original music for five movies: one or more songs forThe Seven-Per-Cent Solution(1976),Dick Tracy(1990), andThe Birdcage(1996), and scores forStavisky(1974) andReds(1981). The two scores reflect divergent trends in this era. Warren Beatty’sRedsuses music sparingly, and Alain Resnais’sStaviskycontains a complicated score that reflects compositional trends of the 1930s. Sondheim’s songs for the other films are crafted to entertain and to further their respective stories. ForDick Tracy, Sondheim composed five songs; several accompany montages, others crosscut with live action, and two, both performed by Madonna, have multiple reprises. Among the latter is the Oscar-winning “Sooner or Later.”

Abstract:
Medical therapy of stone disease aims to prevent stones or dissolve existing stones. Dissolution therapy aims to dissolve stones through administration of oral agents to by direct chemolysis through renal irrigation. Since dissolution therapy may take weeks to achieve an effect, it is usually used as an adjunct to endourological treatment. Urate stones are most amenable to dissolution therapy. Stones containing any calcium have a lower chance of successful dissolution. Providing stone composition is known, irrigating chemolysis is an option for patients with large stone burdens who are unsuitable for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Both uric acid and cystine stones can be treated with irrigating solutions of trihydroxymethyl-aminomethan with pH 8.5–9.0, though it takes a long time to dissolve stones and oral treatment is preferred.

Joho, Tobias. Thucydides, Epic, and Tragedy. Edited by Sara Forsdyke, Edith Foster, and Ryan Balot. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199340385.013.40.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite initially acknowledging the deep gulf between his concern with the truth and the fanciful compositions of the poets, Thucydides is strongly influenced by the examples of Homer and Attic tragedy. Three areas of influence can be distinguished. First, Homer and the tragedians provide fundamental structural principles: Thucydides adopts Homer’s solution to narrating simultaneous strands of events, follows Homer’s example in heightening suspense, and learns from both Homer and tragedy to generate unity through narrative patterning. By adopting Homeric and tragic features, Thucydides infuses his narrative with a specific tone: tragic irony and reversals create an atmosphere of eerie inevitability, Homeric “Almost episodes” underscore the fragility of human endeavors, the Homeric emphasis on factual precision heightens Thucydides’ tone of objective pathos. Third, Thucydides’ allusions to specific Homeric and tragic episodes, besides demonstrating Thucydides’ engagement with Homer and tragedy, reveal his persisting distance from his poetic models.

Cohen, Jonathan, and Shaul Lev. Parenteral nutrition in the ICU. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0207.

Full text
Abstract:
Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a technique of artificial nutrition support, which consists of the intravenous administration of macronutrients, micronutrients, and water. PN has become integrated into intensive care unit (ICU) patient management with the aim of preventing energy deficits and preserving lean body mass. The addition of PN to enteral nutrition is known as supplemental PN. Parenteral feeding should be considered whenever enteral nutritional support is contraindicated, or when enteral nutrition alone is unable to meet energy and nutrient requirements. International guidelines differ considerably regarding the indications for PN. Thus, the ESPEN guidelines recommend initiating PN in critically-ill patients who do not meet caloric goals within 2–3 days of commencing EN, while the Canadian guidelines recommend PN only after extensive attempts to feed with EN have failed. The ASPEN guidelines advocate administering PN after 8 days of attempting EN unsuccessfully. Several studies have demonstrated that parenteral glutamine supplementation may improve outcome, and the ESPEN guidelines give a grade A recommendation to the use of glutamine in critically-ill patients who receive PN. Studies on IV omega-3 fatty acids have yielded promising results in animal models of acute respiratory distress syndrome and proved superior to solutions with omega -6 compositions. The discrepancy between animal models and clinical practice could be related to different time frames.
