When Varèse lived in that street sixty years earlier, he was creating Poème Electronique, a commission from the Philips company. The eight-minutes song would become the soundtrack of the pavilion created by Le Corbusier at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. For this composition, Varèse gathered trivial sounds from Eindhoven, noises that would only be the disposable sounds of everyday life for many. But not the composer who, exhibiting keen attention and sensitivity, saw poetic power in these sounds and produced a striking composition. [...]

Abstract:
The article discusses the concept of art composition, that functioning in practice music teachers, teachers of fine arts and literature, teachers of choreography and theater. However, the theoretical foundation of art-composition and content of the concept has not yet been the subject of a special study. At the same time, comprehension of innovative approach in educating to the art, maintenance of artistic education characterized by an orientation on studying - man with a modern world view, it is necessary. A necessity of enriching of thesaurus of school pedagogics was clear, actual terms, art composition behaves to the number of that. This study contributes to the problem of a more general nature - the possibility of using polyart creative activities as a means of identification and learning of gifted children. The originality of the art-composition - in the innovative thinking of the modern author, whose seeking to portray the world is not the way it sees, but the way it understands. Results of the creative work can be presented in different art forms, not excluding sketches, improvisations, postmodern games with the text. The pedagogical value of the art-composition: the teacher can visually track the progress of the child in the field of aesthetic perception, associative thinking and the work with the material.

Willgoss, Richard Adrian. "Creativity in Art Music Composition." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20586.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates what it means to call art music composition creative. Research into the concept of creativity has taken place mostly in science-based disciplines and is reviewed for its relevance. Discussions on what may constitute the foundations of creativity in music are conducted. Musical creativity is not bounded by normativity, consistency, truth-boundedness, optimization or effability for its recognition and is largely aesthetic. Current research methods are mainly explanatory, objective and analytic, and necessarily fall short in understanding musical creativity. It thereby undermines the validity of these methods when used to justify one’s understanding. The undermining invariably takes place by disrupting logical and reasonable expectations. The significance of this research is that it attempts to find and describe essences of the subject matter, the effect of which actually disrupts grounds for finding essences in the first place. It no longer seeks to explain creativity in musical composition. This thesis argues that creativity in art music composition is better understood through philosophical phenomenology than through analysis, where evidence as experience and description naturally includes aesthetic considerations. What composers say is made potentially helpful to understand their musical creativity. They are approached using an interview technique where problem solving, truth-boundedness, optimization and reasonable causality are set aside as essential precepts. Responses are interpreted intuitively to reveal essences present. Trains of thought that reveal essential properties in interview content are intuited. They show that communication is a prominent essence to motivation for being creative. Perceptual attitudes and experiences are often provoked by disruption to sonic expectation. Creativity in art music composition then becomes a generic initial step in the way it communicates and inspires through playing with musical expectation.

Robinson, Chelseigh. "Music and Art: Exploring Cross-Pollination." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2013. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/115.

Full text
Abstract:
As a music student who was always more attracted to the “academic” side of music rather than the performance side, I have come to hold a great respect for music history. This interest only grew when I got the opportunity to study music for a semester in Edinburgh, Scotland. Being surrounded by so much history, both musical and artistic, only fed my passion. I began to notice many similarities between the development of music and art both during lectures at the university and in my leisure time in galleries. I noticed that composers and visual artists in the same time period would hold similar beliefs or thoughts, therefore similarities could be found between the two art forms. Oftentimes, I would come across a composer whose compositional techniques were directly influenced by an artist and/or vice versa. I became interested in this type of cross-pollination in music and soon began to ask myself the question “Have the development of art and music always been influenced by each other? How many composers were inspired by art?” When it came time to begin my honors thesis, I decided to address this topic. So, I chose to explore this type of cross-pollination in music and, in conjunction with this research, create my own musical composition based on a work of visual art of my own choosing. Specifically, I wanted to look more carefully at the technique composers had used historically to connect their pieces of music with particular pieces of visual art. I therefore chose several art-influenced compositions to examine how the music expresses the art. In the first chapter of my thesis, I discuss the problem of turning spatially existing art into a temporally existing composition and explore several compositions in which the composers chose to construct a musical narrative as an approach to this challenge. In the second chapter, I revisit the problem of turning art into music but instead explore a different set of compositions that overcome this issue using a ‘snapshot’ technique. In the third chapter, I take a look at ekprasis as a technique used to translate abstract art into music and focus on how one composition in particular expresses the artwork. The fourth chapter is a journal discussing the art I have chosen, the stages in my compositional process, and how I used what I learned from my research to create my own composition. I have included the score of my composition as the fifth chapter.

Wages, Mark A. "Pattern in composition of the visual arts." Virtual Press, 1998. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1115757.

Abstract:
This creative project dealt with the development of pattern as it relates to composition. A variety of methods of developing pattern were utilized: stenciling, transfer, and Macromedia Freehand. This assortment of applications provided for a broad exploration of pattern making. The artist also conducted in-depth research of artists who incorporated pattern into their work.As a result of the project, the artist increased his comprehension of the capabilities of pattern in picture making. An additional insight about the disappearance of the pattern format was also attained through research of the pattern movement. The writer identified an under-utilized method of depiction that is likely to be resurrected and developed. This research is artistically relevant in that it recognizes a compositional method that was prematurely abandoned and is worthy of re-exploration.

Full text
Abstract:
Literature is reviewed for the impacts of variable natural gas composition on two-stroke lean burn pipeline compressor engines. Information gathered for these engines can be simplified for development of control algorithms in four-stroke and richer burning engines. Data shows that geospatial, geological, and transient hydraulic effects cause composition variations that adversely affect engine emissions, efficiency, rated performance, and operational safety considering auto-ignition effects. In order to compensate for these changes in composition, better engine control schemes can help meet desired performance goals. For specific gas compositions combusting at a fixed air-fuel ratio, the laminar flame speed, adiabatic flame temperature, and ignition delay relate to and allow the prediction of the mixtures reactivity, thermal availability, and auto-ignition tendency. Predicting changes in these combustion parameters, as caused by changes in fuel composition, is essential to the success of control development for variable composition engine operation. In addition to addressing the associated combustion effects resulting from variable fuel composition, an overview of sensor technologies is presented for use in control applications.

Abstract:
This is the final report summarizing work completed during the first phase of the PRCI study on large bore two stroke lean burn integral compressor engine response to variable natural gas compositions for the purposes of engine control development. Accomplished tasks include the completion of a detailed literature review covering the research topic, a parametric study of laminar flame speeds and ignition delays for binary methane and ethane mixtures up to 30%, and a GT-Power engine model of the Colorado State GMV-4 research engine with associated validation data from CSUs variable ethane effects study. The chemistry of the combustion reaction is crucial to accurate modeling; laminar flame speeds and ignition delays as function of composition were determined from the solutions to published chemical kinetics mechanisms GRI-Mech3.0 and Saudi Aramco Mech1.3, respectively. The Wiebe coefficients correlated to variations in ethane composition and spark timing were regressed from the crank angle resolved heat release rates. The Wiebe coefficients are the most significant achievement of this phase of the project, since they quantify the heat release as a function of composition. At this time, the Wiebe parameters only reflect the relative changes in the model since certain aspect of the models geometry are pending resolution. Future phases of the project could use the developed GT-Power model and Wiebe coefficients for development of control schemes that maintain emissions, speed and torque limits, and maximize thermal efficiency during a variable fuel composition event.

Johnson. L51935 Limitations of Cellulosic-Coated Electrodes. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), October 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010434.

Abstract:
Cellulosic-coated electrodes (primarily AWS EXX10-type) are traditionally used for stovepipe welding of pipelines because they are well suited for deposition of one-sided welds and are capable of high deposition rates when welding downhill. Despite advances in mechanized welding technology and the development of low-hydrogen consumables suitable for pipeline girth welding, manual welding, using cellulosic-coated electrodes is still widely utilized for pipeline construction throughout the world. Several incidents involving significant hydrogen-assisted cracking in the weld metal of pipeline girth welds made using cellulosic-coated electrodes have been reported recently. Two of these cases required removal of many welds at an expense of over $4 million dollars, in spite of established procedures having been used. The objectives of this project were to identify the primary mechanisms contributing to transverse cracking of field welds and to provide recommendations regarding safe preheat/interpass temperatures that should be utilized when welding heavy-wall pipe and fittings using cellulosic-coated electrodes. Two cases of severe weld metal hydrogen-assisted cracking were investigated. In each case, the composition of the weld metal was substantially richer that would typically be expected for E8010-G electrodes. Subsequent investigation into factors influencing the composition of weld metal from cellulosic-coated electrodes revealed that arc length has a pronounced effect on carbon, manganese, and silicon recovery. The increase in composition observed with variation in arc length could not explain the extremely rich compositions observed in the cracked girth welds, however. Subsequent investigation demonstrated that it was possible to effectively double the manganese concentration and triple the silicon concentration when using cellulosic coated electrodes that have low coating moisture content.

Linker, Taylor, and Timothy Jacobs. PR-457-18204-R01 Variable Fuel Effects on Legacy Compressor Engines Phase IV - Predictive NOx Modeling. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), May 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011584.

Abstract:
The ultimate goal of this work is to improve the current control methods for large bore, lean burn natural gas engines in order to combat performance and emissions issues during variable fuel composition events. This will be achieved in the long term by simulating the effects of variable fuel composition on a large bore, natural gas engine and developing engine control strategies which work to mitigate adverse effects. The work of Phase IV adds onto previous work by enabling the prediction of NOxemissions in the validated, full-scale engine simulation of a Cooper-Bessemer GMWH-10C developed in Phase III. A sweep of fuel composition was also performed to assess the effect that variable fuel composition has on in-cylinder properties and NOxemissions. Engine-out NOxwas predicted via a chemical kinetic mechanism which was implemented into the existing engine simulation. The mechanism dictates the composition of combustion products in each cylinder, including NO and NO2(NOx). NOxlevels were measured at the simulation exhaust to compare with the experimental NOxdata acquired as part of the data collection carried out in Phase III of this project. The prediction was tuned in order to achieve the closest prediction to real measured NOxvalues. A preliminary sweep of fuel composition was completed by varying the mole fractions of ethane and propane within the natural gas compositions used in the simulation. Changes in in-cylinder pressure, location of peak pressure, in-cylinder temperature, and engine-out NOxwere evaluated based on their trend-wise behavior and compared qualitatively to expected results.

Abstract:
This project was undertaken to examine reports that low sulphur steels were more prone to hydrogen-induced cracking than steels with higher sulphur contents. The susceptibility to hydrogen-induced cracking of the root pass and the baseplate was evaluated using the high restraint cracking test developed at the Welding Institute of Canada, using two different edge configurations. The steels used in this study, containing 0.0024 and 0.0109 percent sulphur, were laboratory heats provided by Nippon Steel Corporation. Their compositions were typical of Nb-V. X70 linepipe steels and were essentially of the same nominal composition.

Rogers, Amanda. Cambodian Audience Engagement in the Performing Arts: Cambodian Living Arts 2022 Cultural Season. Swansea University, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.23889/sureport.65084.

Abstract:
Project Report There is growing research on arts audiences - particularly regarding theatre and dance (Sedgman 2019; Walmsley 2019; Reason et al 2022). However, much of this work remains centred on the ‘Global North’ and there is little published research on arts audiences in South East Asia in general, and Cambodia in particular. The exception to this is our previous report (Rogers et al 2021) which was the first time that research has examined audience composition, understanding and preferences for the performing arts in Phnom Penh. This research raised a bigger question around who the arts are for and highlighted that young people did not always understand what they were watching. The project discussed here builds on this previous work, as it sought to further understand the composition of audiences attending Cambodian performance events, examine their reactions, and consider how using simple forms of technology may promote audience engagement and understanding. The research used Cambodian Living Arts’ (CLA) 2022 Cultural Season of performances, workshops, and talks as a case study through which to experiment with this and other methodologies. The Cultural Season (titled Action Today: Consequences Tomorrow) was held in Phnom Penh and then toured across Cambodia, also giving the research the unique opportunity to find out more about arts audiences in the provinces. The findings provide insights into the level of knowledge and understanding of the arts among different audiences across Cambodia, their preferences in terms of types of arts consumed, and the choices surrounding their participation and involvement in the arts.
