Abstract:
The article analyzes the light-spatial composition of a number of Greek Catholic churches of the Ukrainian diaspora designed and built by the famous Canadian architect Radoslav Zhuk. A set of rules and principles used by the architect to create a sacred atmosphere in the interior space of church buildings by means of natural light is established. In general, the light-space composition studied of eight churches built by Radoslav Zhuk in the second half of the 20th century. These are Greek Catholic churches in Canada and the United States built between 1964 and 1968: St. Joseph's Church and Holy Family Church in Winnipeg, Canada; Church of the Blessed Eucharist in Toronto; Church of the Holy Cross in Thunder Bay. Later, in the 70s, according to R. Zhuk's designs, the following build: Holy Trinity Church in Kerhonkson, New York, USA; St. Josaphat Church, Rochester, New York, USA; St. Stephen's Church, Calgary, Canada. The spatial structure of the first churches built by the architect in Canada is a combination of horizontal rectangular volumes with vertical ones, which carry the main semantic and figurative load. The lighting composition in the interior of the churches is similar in terms of brightness distribution to modern Catholic churches, where the space and surfaces of the sanctuary are the most illuminated. It turned out that in the architectonics of these churches, the architect uses large stained-glass windows in the wall above the main entrance, as well as in the domes and towers above the sanctuary. This creates a high level of natural light in these parts of the prayer hall. The nave itself less lit through narrow and high windows in the walls. This nature of natural light creates a mystical atmosphere. From the area of lesser illumination, people's eyes drawn to the sacred space of the sanctuary, where the sacrament of the Eucharist is celebrated. In the churches built in the 1970s, a different interpretation of natural light appears. The architect emphasizes the play of light and shadow on vertical tectonic roof surfaces in towers of different heights and spaces under domes. A favorite technique of the architect is the use of horizontal strips of low windows between the walls of the church and the roof. The closest to the Ukrainian tradition in Zhuk's work is the light composition of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in Lviv in 2002.

Abstract:
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to observe how the composition of organic matter (OM) and the extent of anoxia during deposition within the Marcellus Formation in New York varied by distance from the sediment source in eastern New York. Lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes and fatty acids) in the extractable organic component (bitumen) of the shale samples were analyzed, and proxies such as the average chain length (ACL), aquatic to terrestrial ratio (ATR) and carbon preference index (CPI) of n-alkanes were calculated. Fatty acids were relatively non-abundant due to the age of the shale bed, but n-alkane distributions revealed that the primary component of the OM was terrigenous plants. The presence of shorter n-alkane chain lengths in the samples indicated that there was also a minor component of phytoplankton and algal (marine) sourced OM. Whole rock analyses were also conducted, and cerium anomalies were calculated as a proxy for anoxia. All samples had a negative anomaly value, indicating anoxic conditions during deposition. Two samples, however, contained values close to zero and thus were determined to have suboxic conditions. Anoxia and total organic matter (TOM) did not show any spatial trends across the basin, which may be caused by varying depths within the basin during deposition. A correlation between nickel concentrations and TOM was observed and indicates that algae was the primary source of the marine OM, which supports the lipid biomarker analysis. It was determined that the kerogen type of the Marcellus Formation in New York State is type III, consistent with a methane-forming shale bed.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractEuropean swallowwort [Vincetoxicum rossicum (Kleopow) Barbarich] is found in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. It forms dense growth patterns that reduce plant and insect biodiversity, and lab assays show that it produces allelopathic compounds that affect microbial activity. Consequently, we hypothesized that V. rossicum alters soil microbiome composition and activity in invaded habitats, which may impact ecosystem properties and processes. We sampled soil from a similar time point within a growing season at each of five sites in New York State where V. rossicum was both present and absent. We measured bacterial and fungal microbiome composition, available soil nitrogen (N), soil respiration (CO2 flux), and soil extracellular enzyme activities. Microbial composition varied across field sites, but only fungal composition was affected by invasion. No significant differences were found between the invaded and uninvaded plots at any of the sites for available soil ammonium, nitrate, or respiration, though extractable N varied greatly between sites. Microbial hydrolytic extracellular enzyme activities suggest decreased protein degradation and increased oxidative enzyme activity with V. rossicum invasion, which is relevant to soil N and carbon cycling processes. Although V. rossicum impacted rhizosphere microbial composition and activity, it was not associated with large perturbations in ecosystem function when examined across multiple invasion sites during this short-term study.

Abstract:
Mg3−xGa1+xIr (x = 0.05) was synthesized by direct reaction of the elements in welded tantalum containers at 1200 °C and subsequent annealing at 500 °C for 30 days. Its crystal structure represents a new prototype and was determined by single-crystal technique as follows: space group P63/mcm, Pearson symbol hP90, Z = 18, a = 14.4970(3) Å, c = 8.8638(3) Å. The composition and atomic arrangement in Mg3GaIr do not follow the 8–N rule due to the lack of valence electrons. Based on chemical bonding analysis in positional space, it was shown that the title compound has a polycationic–polyanionic organization. In comparison with other known intermetallic substances with this kind of bonding pattern, both the polyanion and the polyanion are remarkably complex. Mg3−xGa1+xIr is an example of how the general organization of intermetallic substances (e.g., formation of polyanions and polycations) can be understood by extending the principles of 8–N compounds to electron-deficient materials with multi-atomic bonding.

Abstract:
The nests of ants Neoponera have chambers that can also be occupied by other species of organisms that can be tenants, visitors or prey. However, few studies have considered the assemblage of the associated species and described their composition. This study aimed to describe the architecture and catalog the visitors and prey species found in Neoponera verenae nests. Talcum powder was pumped inside eight nests to mark the chambers and tunnels. The nests were then excavated to describe the architecture and obtain measurements of chambers. The associated species encountered in the nests were collected and identified allowing us to obtain new records of visiting (Linepithema sp., cryptodesmid millipedes and Neotropacarus sp.) and prey taxa (membracids, apid bees and springtails) of N. verenae. Generally, nests had a single entrance hole and a depth of up to 42 cm. Nest chambers were found with three basic forms, elliptical, hangers and boot. Although studies show that this species can occupy abandoned nests of leaf-cutting ants, we found that the nests of N. verenae were more similar to those of Ectatomma ants. Indeed, we found one of the N. verenae nests was attached to a Ectatomma edentatum nest, leading us to suggest that N. verenae may occupy abandoned nests or displace other ants to occupy them.

Abstract:
The mound- building termite Nasutitermes coxipoensis is commonly found at subtropical environments of northeast Argentina. This study gives new data about its nest architecture, biology and nutritional habits, comparing these results with other populations of the species. The volume of the analyzed nests varied between 0.91 dm3 y 207.33 dm3, a wider range than previously reported for N. coxipoensis. The external and internal characteristics of the nests were similar to descriptions from other sites although it was not possible to differentiate the royal cell. The societies were monogynic and the queens laid eggs throughout the year. The body length and weight of primary reproductives were reported. The presence of alates within the mounds was higher in October and November. Feeding substrates consumed by N. coxipoensis at these habitats are also reported.

Abstract:
We determined responses of red spruce ( Picea rubens Sarg.) – balsam fir ( Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) forests to 6 years of nitrogen (N), calcium (Ca), and N + Ca treatments (100, 160, and 260 kg·ha–1·year–1 of N, Ca, and N + Ca, respectively) in New York (NY) and New Hampshire (NH). Forest responses to Ca treatments were also determined in Vermont (VT). Nitrogen treatments increased aboveground net primary production (ANPP) by 33% and 25% above controls in NY and NH, respectively. Similarly, N + Ca treatments increased ANPP by 27% and 28% in NY and NH, respectively. Calcium treatments increased ANPP by 25% and 21% above controls in NY and VT. Calcium treatment did not increase ANPP in NH, suggesting N, but not Ca limitation. Leaf-litter quantity and quality, and soil C and N storage were greater in treated than in control plots. Fine-root mass and production did not differ among treatments. Trees, therefore, assimilated more soil nutrients without increasing root growth in treated plots. Red spruce ANPP, however, declined or remained unchanged in response to N and Ca additions. The equivalent of 68–102 years of anthropogenic N addition to soils changed forest species composition without decreasing ANPP, and Ca additions did not prevent this change.

Abstract:
Abstract Riparian zones are transitional areas between streams and adjacent terrestrial habitats, and they typically have vegetation communities distinct from both. To identify possible effects of forest management within a watershed on riparian plant community structure and riparian zone width, understory vegetation was sampled in three managed and three unmanaged (Forest Preserve) watersheds (250ߝ550 ha) in the Adirondack Park, New York, at three lateral distances (2, 7, and 12 m) from the stream (n = 6). Abundance of herbs was greater at Preserve sites, althoughrichness was not affected by land use. Abundance and richness both decreased with distance from the stream within each land use type, and this decrease was less steep at Forest Preserve sites. Abundance of saplings was greater under management, and saplings did not respond to distance fromthe channel. Binary discriminant analysis demonstrated differences in herb community composition between land uses, although this difference decreased with increasing proximity to the channel. Although none of the riparian areas in this study have been directly logged, this study shows thatindirect effects of management in a watershed (e.g., increased light and evapotranspiration) can alter the riparian herbaceous community, increase the density of saplings, and narrow the riparian zone of small upland streams. Abstract:
This article explores the hybrid modernity made through missionary architectural practices during colonial Korea, by examining how the master plan of Yonsei University, one of the earliest mission schools in Korea, has gone through a unique evolutionary process throughout the convoluted modern history of the twentieth century. In doing so, this article conducts a thorough visual and spatial analysis of the given case with two emphases: first, analyzing three campus master plans—produced in 1917, 1925, and 2016 respectively—in a comparative way; and second, analyzing the layout and façade composition of major buildings that comprise the campus in great details. These master plans are crucial evidences enabling us to investigate the transatlantic architectural practices in early 20th century, as Henry K. Murphy, the architect in charge of the first two master plans of Yonsei University, was one who had long practiced in New York and greatly admired the values of Asian architecture through a series of field trips to major Asian cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul. While the 1917 master plan was in part influenced by the Western precedents, as well as ones from Japan and China some of which Murphy himself was involved in as a master architect the 1925 case deviates from it and illustrates multiple points of transformation that go beyond spatial symmetry and visual harmony. The 1925 one is marked by the rearranged spatial disposition and façade composition of dormitories and residential halls as influenced by the geographical peculiarities of Korea at that time. Long after the revision, the third, 2016, version illustrates the much expanded, triangular shape toward the south with added buildings and facilities, while the entombment area and other historical fragments in the upper part are well preserved. Hence, this article claims that the case of Yonsei University elicits the hybridization of missionary architectural practices and local Korean culture throughout the twentieth century, which is neither subsumed by the missionaries' imposition of design ideas nor bound by the authentically Korean tradition of design.

Abstract:
This paper deals with a comparative study on the interpolymeric complexes of alginate poly(N-isopropyl acryl amide (PNIPAAm) and corresponding graft copolymers with various compositions in respect to their toxicity, biocompatibility and in vitro and in vivo release of theophylline (THP). Loading of the various matrices with theophylline and characterization of loaded matrices was studied by near infrared spectroscopy–chemical imaging (NIR–CI) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was appreciated that THP loading is higher than 40% and the drug is relatively homogeneous distributed within all matrices because of some specific interactions between components of the system. All samples have been found to be non-toxic and biocompatible. It was established that graft copolymers having a good stability show a better drug carrier ability, a higher THP loading, a prolonged release (longer release duration for graft copolymers of 235.4–302.3 min than that for IPC 72/28 of 77.6 min, which means approximately four times slower release from the graft copolymer-based matrices than from the interpolymeric complex) and a good bioavailability. The highest values for THP loading (45%), prolonged release (302.3 min) and bioavailability (175%) were obtained for graft copolymer AgA-g-PNIPAAm 68. The drug release mechanism varies with composition and architecture of the matrix.

Abstract:
The MET Cloisters acquired a peculiar architectural canopy in 2016 that belonged to the main portal of the medieval monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória in the Portuguese village of Batalha. This piece, now in New York, surmounted one of the twelve statues of the Apostles. In the 19th century, during restoration works, the portal was altered from its initial dimension and many of its original sculptural elements were replaced by copies. This research note intends to trace the current location of all the original elements, in both public and private collections, as well as their path in the art market. It also analyzes how this canopy represents a unique example of micro-architecture, relating its composition to the monastery’s architecture. The canopy seems to allude to the dual function and meaning of the Portuguese medieval monastery: the divine temple is represented by the five small buildings and their tile-roofs, as the church’s chevet with five radiating chapels; and royal funerary place as represented by the vertical segment, a sectioned octagonal volume evoking King John’s funeral chapel. In its simplicity and micro-scale, this canopy displays remarkable artistic quality, constituting an excellent example of the fourteenth-century production led by the master Huguet in the Portuguese construction site of Batalha.

A series of new platinum square planar complexes [Pt(NCN)L]+/0 with the pincer N^C^N cyclometallated ligand (NC(H)N = 1,3-bis(1-phenyl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)benzene) containing the following L: Cl−, acetonitrile, pyridine, dimethylaminopyridine, 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide, has been synthesized. Application of bridging acetate ion as L ligand allowed obtaining a binuclear [Pt(NCN)]2OOCCH3 complex. The bulky and rigid structure of N^C^N-ligand provokes instability of its pincer coordination that makes possible transformation of the molecular architecture to give a heteronuclear complex with the Pt-Ag-Pt coordination core. The composition and structure of the obtained compounds were characterized in solution and in the solid state using ESI mass-spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal XRD crystallography. The complexes luminesce in solid state, solution, and in polymeric matrix demonstrating moderate to bright emission at ca. 550 nm with quantum yields up to 22% and lifetime of excited state up to 22 µs. TD DFT computational approach together with analysis of the photophysical properties in different media reveals the predominant ligand-centered 3IL nature of the radiative excited state localized at the N^C^N-ligand. The ancillary ligand L demonstrates a minor influence on the energy of emission but affects dramatically emission efficiency and lifetime. The chloride complex displays dual (fluorescence and phosphorescent) luminescence due to labile coordination of an N-coordinated functionality that produces a dangling aromatic fragment, which gives emission from a singlet excited state.

Abstract:
The composition of “The Steppe” is considered within the linguo-semiotic approach, first, as a metaphor for the architecture of the Cathedral of St Basil; second, as a metaphor for the historical process, with the idea of Moscow as the Third Rome and the New Israel emphasized. The connection between the chapters and the deities and saints to whom the churches of the cathedral are dedicated is shown. The Church of St Nicholas of N. can be correlated with the southern Side-church of St Nicholas Velikoretsky. Chapter 2 mentions Alexander I of Russia. In Chapter 3 allusions to the story of Abrahamʼs hospitality are found. Panteley, Emelyan, and Vasya parody the three holy hierarchs; the gentleman and lady from the church parody St Cyprian and Justina. St Gregory of Armenia is referred to by mentioning Armenian settlements. Chapter 7 describes the entry of the waggons into the city. Chapter 8 contains allusions to the life and а posthumous miracle of St Barlaam of Khutyn. Analogies are drawn with the Book of Amos, after whom Alexander Svirsky was named. The journey takes place in the opposite direction to the movement of the sun, with which the Church of the Intercession of Our Lady is identified, and in terms of its duration corresponds to Godʼs creation. The historical process is limited by the events described in the Book of Genesis and the Revelation of St John the Divine. Classical antiquity is represented by Deniska, the Old Testament period by Moisei Moiseichʼs family, the period of religious syncretism by the drivers, the New Testament period by Konstantin Zvonyk. Going round the cathedral is an allusion to the story of the fall of Jericho and Jesusʼs words about the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.

Abstract In the late thirteenth century, the poet-painter Qian Xuan 錢選 (style [zi (字)] Shunju 舜举, sobriquets [hao 號] Zhaxi weng 霅溪翁, Yutan 玉潭; ca. 1235–ca. 1307) created a horizontal, multi-colored landscape painting known today as Wang Xizhi Watching Geese and owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; a copy of the painting exists in the collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The work depicts a waterside pavilion in which a figure stands with his right hand seemingly resting on the balustrade. This article offers a new interpretation of the painting's scene, and it will argue that the figure's hand on the balustrade is the key to an additional perspective of the painting's artistic statement. It begins by analyzing the painting composition, which includes the artist's inscription, before proceeding to a discussion of balustrade in Song ci-poetry and its significance in Qian Xuan's painting. A closer look at the architecture of the pavilion further reveals that the subject and theme of this painting is that of a dejected Song scholar-poet who laments his country's fate.

Abstract:
Plant microbiomes contribute to plant fitness and crop yields through a variety of mechanisms. Determining variability in microbiome composition among individuals of a species, and identifying core microbiome membership, are essential first steps for exploring host–microbe interactions. Members of a core microbiome are microorganisms that are tightly associated with and are found widespread across individuals of a plant genotype or species. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is an economically important crop that has gained a resurgence following its removal from the list of controlled substances by the U.S. government. Despite renewed interest in this crop, the microbiome of hemp has not been well studied. We analyzed the bacterial and fungal communities associated with four plant compartments (rhizosphere, root tissue, leaf surface, and flowers) of C. sativa ‘Anka’ across six fields in the Finger Lakes region of New York, United States. We found that both bacterial and fungal community composition varied significantly among plant compartments. Rhizosphere communities were largely similar to the bulk soil communities but root tissue, leaf, and flower communities had distinct compositions. We identified candidate core microbiome members of each plant compartment (bacterial core taxa: root tissue [n = 6], leaves [n = 11], and flowers [n = 7]; fungal core taxa: rhizosphere [n = 1], leaves [n = 14], and flowers [n = 2]). Many of these candidate core microbiome members were related to organisms previously associated with plant growth promotion or pathogen resistance in various plants. The core microbiome identified in this study can be further investigated to improve cultivation of this important crop. [Formula: see text] Copyright © 2020 The Author(s). Abstract:
The book by Nicholas N. Patrikios ("Sacred Architecture of Byzantium: Art, Liturgy and Symbolism in Early Christian Churches") is a generalizing work on Byzantine architecture from the era of Constantine to the fall of Constantinople. Its importance lies not only in the fact that the author has worked through a huge array of material - 370 monuments, dividing them into seven types (p. 48) and tracing the evolution of each of them in general and in detail, but also in the fact that the author takes into account the relationship between the architectural typology and the content of the building, demonstrating how the features of the liturgy in different historical periods correlate with the architectural evolution, as well as with the figurative content of the church space. This distinctive the feature of the work gives it the necessary completeness. For Patrikios architecture, liturgy and sacred art of constitutes a single whole. To take into account all the components of the whole, the author divides the narrative into the following chapters: church and state; sacred architecture; magnificent churches; spiritual art; liturgy and Eucharist; symbolism in architecture and art.

Abstract:
Fifteen years ago, at least one multimated female yellow-legged Asian hornet (Vespa velutina Lepeletier 1836) arrived in France, giving rise to a pan-European invasion, altering the environment, affecting ecosystem processes, and impacting society. During winter, V. velutina nests (n = 3) were collected in Galicia and data on internal and external aspects of the nests and the colony as a whole were collected. The whole colony population (WCPN; adult insects, larvae, and pupae in percentages) was as follows: nest A: n = 176 (49%, 3%, and 48%); nest B: n = 1979 (52%, 36%, and 12%); and nest C: n = 662 (5%, 27%, and 8%). The adult insect population (IAPN; males, workers, and gynes in percentages) was as follows: nest A: n = 87 (11%, 66%, and 23%); nest B: n = 1021 (3%, 62%, and 35%); and nest C: n = 430 (20%, 73%, and 7%). As a small number of queens is sufficient for a population to develop, it is necessary to avoid continued spread by deactivating and removing all nests, even those detected in winter. This practice can be of greatest importance in border areas where V. velutina is expanding into new territory.

Nous pourrions qualifier une telle posture d’idéologique, tant elle adopte une antienne antique sans en revisiter les prémisses."Hierarchical scaling, ordered substructure, and ornament, which are essential for generating coherent complexity and adaptation in architecture, were not transformed [NDLR : by modernism] : they were eliminated with a vengeance. The idea that the modernist idiom somehow transmutes essential complex information encoded as proportions is a deliberate falsehood meant to sell a minimalist geometry. Visual emptiness can never relate to human feelings.

Abstract:
AbstractIncreasing evidence indicates that gut microbiota may influence colorectal cancer risk. Diet, particularly fibre intake, may modify gut microbiota composition, which may affect cancer risk. We investigated the relationship between dietary fibre intake and gut microbiota in adults. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we assessed gut microbiota in faecal samples from 151 adults in two independent study populations: National Cancer Institute (NCI), n 75, and New York University (NYU), n 76. We calculated energy-adjusted fibre intake based on FFQ. For each study population with adjustment for age, sex, race, BMI and smoking, we evaluated the relationship between fibre intake and gut microbiota community composition and taxon abundance. Total fibre intake was significantly associated with overall microbial community composition in NYU (P=0·008) but not in NCI (P=0·81). In a meta-analysis of both study populations, higher fibre intake tended to be associated with genera of class Clostridia, including higher abundance of SMB53 (fold change (FC)=1·04, P=0·04), Lachnospira (FC=1·03, P=0·05) and Faecalibacterium (FC=1·03, P=0·06), and lower abundance of Actinomyces (FC=0·95, P=0·002), Odoribacter (FC=0·95, P=0·03) and Oscillospira (FC=0·96, P=0·06). A species-level meta-analysis showed that higher fibre intake was marginally associated with greater abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (FC=1·03, P=0·07) and lower abundance of Eubacterium dolichum (FC=0·96, P=0·04) and Bacteroides uniformis (FC=0·97, P=0·05). Thus, dietary fibre intake may impact gut microbiota composition, particularly class Clostridia, and may favour putatively beneficial bacteria such as F. prausnitzii. These findings warrant further understanding of diet–microbiota relationships for future development of colorectal cancer prevention strategies.

Abstract:
Abstract Due to growing concern for the environment and human health, searching for high-performance lead-free piezoceramics has been a hot topic of scientific and industrial research. Despite the significant progress achieved toward enhancing piezoelectricity, further efforts should be devoted to the synergistic improvement of piezoelectricity and its thermal stability. This study provides new insight into these topics. A new KNN-based lead-free ceramic material is presented, which features a large piezoelectric coefficient (d33) exceeding 500 pC/N and a high Curie temperature (Tc) of ∼200°C. The superior piezoelectric response strongly relies on the increased composition-induced structural flexibility due to lattice softening and decreased unit cell distortion. In contrast to piezoelectricity anomalies induced via polymorphic transition, this piezoelectricity enhancement is effective within a broad temperature range rather than a specific small range. In particular, a hierarchical domain architecture composed of nano-sized domains along the submicron domains was detected in this material system, which further contributes to the high piezoelectricity.

Abstract:
During Fall 2016 we had the unique opportunity to participate in the regular internship program of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and assist with ongoing exhibition projects in the Architecture and Design Department (A&D). This Department was established in 1932 as the first curatorial department dedicated to architecture and design and built on an ambitious collection covering major figures and movement of architectural culture from mid-19th century to the present. With looking back on a rich history of influential exhibitions such as Modern Architecture: International Exhibition (1932), Architecture Without Architects (1964/65) or Deconstructivist Architecture (1988) it has been one of the key institutions to push the format of the architecture exhibition and which it keeps doing up to today. Having this in mind we both came to New York with great respect and honored to gain insights in this institution for a period of three months. The department currently employs around 15 people which made it a really pleasant, intimate place to work with highly passionate and professional individuals full of remarkable expertise and respect for each other. This said and with the department going through some recent (at that moment) personnel changes, most notably the new directorship of Martino Stierli since 2015, as well MoMA reconfiguring and adding gallery spaces set to be open in 2019, we felt it was a very interesting moment for us to talk to our curator colleagues about their personal history and professional ambitions as curators at MoMA as well specific challenges of exhibiting architecture and design. Being both educated in architecture in different countries (Brazil and Germany) we could gain not only a lot of professional insights but also talk about personal aspects of the curators´ – not always linear – careers. In total we conducted six interviews with all (senior) curators and one curatorial assistant of the Architecture and Design Department, all of whom we asked the same, around ten questions in order to produce a complete “panorama” of the departments staff at that very moment. In the following we would like to share with you the second half with Juliet Kinchin, Martino Stierli and Sean Anderson. The first three interviews with Paola Antonelli, Barry Bergdoll and Michelle Millar Fisher, were published on RISCO v.16 n.1 2018. From the interviews, Juliet Kinchin had an approach since a student into intellectual debates and design history rather than architectural history, while Martino as a professor, was also engaged doing exhibitions. Sean Anderson struggled being a professor and practicing architect, and curation for him “means also being able to condense ideas and questions”. Since they had different backgrounds before arrive at MoMA, the teaching position and a special love for research is a shared common background for them. Juliet Kinchin argues that the curator’s activity apart from the responsabilities also means communicate and creating view points and arguments in a spatial and material form, while Martino talk about the work of curating a show as very much about a teamwork. For Sean Anderson also the very strong critical sensibility, is a must have skill for a curator. Sean Anderson’s advice to young curators is to ask questions and to have as many experiences in the world as possible. Juliet Kinchin talks about integrity, that makes the difference in your work, Martino in the same way, reinforce the ideia to love what you do and so you will be successful. Abstract:
The only pillow basalt in synorogenic sedimentary rocks at the exterior margin of the Taconic orogen in eastern North America is at Stark's Knob in eastern New York. Earlier reported as extrusive into allochthonous Ordovician slope and rise facies, this small lens (ca. 125+ m long, 39 m thick) is a fault-bounded block in Upper Ordovician melange under the Taconian frontal thrust. Its N-MORB (normal mid-ocean ridge basalt) basalt geochemistry and spinel composition are characteristic of oceanic ridge settings at a water depth of 2 km or more. Abundant limestone lenses on pillows and lava shelves within pillows yielded a middle Late Ordovician gastropod. The limestones are reconciled with this extrusion depth and with limited early Paleozoic pelagic carbonate production by lime mud transport from the Laurentian platform or abiotic carbonate precipitation with sea-water heating during basalt extrusion. A genetic relationship between the parautochthonous Stark's Knob basalts and the allochthonous Jonestown volcanics in slope and rise facies of the Hamburg klippe, eastern Pennsylvania, is likely. Both are Ordovician MORB basalts that reflect volcanism on the subducting outer trench slope prior to the Taconic arc – Laurentia collision. Taconic orogenesis may have led to basalt production on the subducting plate by (1) the setting up of orogen-parallel, predominantly strike-slip motion on the subducting slab with MORB basalt generated at offsets in a setting analogous to the Gulf of California or (2) development of faults in a flexure-induced extensional regime. By either process, mafic volcanism appears to be a rare but tectonically significant process on outer trench slopes as continental margins or oceanic plates enter subduction zones.

Abstract:
Transition metal catalysts with Metal-N-C (M-N-C) sites has been investigated as an alternative of the noble metal catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which occurs on a cathode of fuel cell. Among the methods of preparing various M-N-C catalysts, carbonized metal organic frameworks (MOF) are the one of the simple ways to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon. MOF are known highly porous crystalline solids constructed from metal ions or clusters covalently linked by organic ligands. The tunability of their composition, architecture, and properties has has led to advances in drug delivery, catalysis, sensors, optoelectronics, electrochemistry, gas separation and gas adsorption. Although many studies have been reported that M-N-C catalysts have better performance than Pt catalysts, but most have been reported in alkaline media, and Fe-N-C catalysts have been mainly studied in acidic media. Fe-N-C catalysts have excellent performance; the new M-N-C catalyst should be replaced as it is less stable due to the fenton reaction. In this study, we report the synthesis of a melamine-encapsulated Co-ZnO-C composite as a precursor and template for zeolite-imidazole-frameworks (ZIF-8). This approach allows formation of Co-N-C for constructing unique structures at meso- and macropore scales, while maintaining microporosity. Density functional theory analysis confirms the superior stability of the Co-N-C catalyst over other M-N-C catalysts (M = Fe, Ni, Cr, and Mn). The Co-NC catalyst with a developed pore structure shows remarkable durability (6.7 % performance degradation for 100 h) and full cell performance in H2/O2 under 1 bar of backpressure (723 mW/cm2 of maximum power density).

Abstract:
To develop new antimicrobial synthetic lipopeptides with optimizing peptide length, cationic tripeptides RWR/WRR were N-terminal fatty acylated, and self-assembled with 1-dodecanethiol-anchored gold nanoparticles (Au-DT NPs) via hydrophobic interaction. The ultrashort lipopeptides and their nano-assemblies were effective against a variety of microorganisms, with minimal inhibitory concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 8 μg/mL. Hemolysis analysis and in vitro cytotoxicity assay revealed that self-assembling with Au-DT NPs would improve biological toxicity of lipopeptides, especially for the most active lipopeptides (Palmitoyl-RWR, Palmitoyl-WRR) with long lipid tails. As lipopeptides/ Au-DT NPs displayed slower bactericidal kinetics compared with free lipopeptides, the mode of action was further investigated. Difference in membrane targeting mechanism between lipopeptides and their nano-assemblies may be attributed to the structural architecture. The simple composition and diverse specificities of lipopeptides/Au-DT NPs, as well as their biocompatibility could make them as economically available potent antimicrobial agents for various applications.

Abstract:
Nova Scotia is characterized by cold climate and acidic soils and high organic matter for viticultural development. There is little scientific information available about the nutritional management of grapevine varieties cultivated under cold climate conditions even in Nova Scotia. This study carried out in three seasons aimed to find correlations between tissue nutrients with yield and must composition in order to provide better nutritional management for a given variety. The yield of “L’Acadie” variety was correlated with B, K and Mg. In this variety, Ca to Mg ratio could be an interesting indicator of yield. The yield of “New York Muscat” variety was correlated with Zn, while N, P and K was related to bunch weight and weight of berries. Interspecific hybrids presented lower accumulation of B in their tissues than V. vinifera varieties. Zn and Fe were found as determinant micronutrients in “Chardonnay” variety. “Riesling” variety accumulated high levels of K in their tissues even over the optimal values recommended for grapevines. K to Ca ratio could be an important indicator of yield in “Pinot Noir” variety. A strong correlation between the petiole and blade analysis was found in macro and micro-nutrients. These results may contribute to improve the nutritional management of grapevines grown under cold climate conditions, mostly in Nova Scotia.

Abstract:
This study compared marginal and conditional modeling approaches for identifying individual, park and neighborhood park use predictors. Data were derived from the ParkIndex study, which occurred in 128 block groups in Brooklyn (New York), Seattle (Washington), Raleigh (North Carolina), and Greenville (South Carolina). Survey respondents (n = 320) indicated parks within one half-mile of their block group used within the past month. Parks (n = 263) were audited using the Community Park Audit Tool. Measures were collected at the individual (park visitation, physical activity, sociodemographic characteristics), park (distance, quality, size), and block group (park count, population density, age structure, racial composition, walkability) levels. Generalized linear mixed models and generalized estimating equations were used. Ten-fold cross validation compared predictive performance of models. Conditional and marginal models identified common park use predictors: participant race, participant education, distance to parks, park quality, and population >65yrs. Additionally, the conditional mode identified park size as a park use predictor. The conditional model exhibited superior predictive value compared to the marginal model, and they exhibited similar generalizability. Future research should consider conditional and marginal approaches for analyzing health behavior data and employ cross-validation techniques to identify instances where marginal models display superior or comparable performance.

A new heterometallic complex of CoII and NdIII with phenathroline [Co(Рhen)3][Nd(NO3)5(H2O)][Nd(NO3)4(H2O)2]H2O was synthesized for the first time by the self-assembly method. The crystal structure of the complex was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound is an anion-cation complex and crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with unit cell parameters a=12.4251(4) Å, b=11.7206(3) Å, c=36.5374(12) Å, ==900, =90.581(3)0. The anionic part of the complex consists of two nitrate hydrated NdIII complexes: [Nd(NO3)5(H2O)]2– and [Nd(NO3)4(H2O)2]–, in which the coordination number of neodymium is 11 and 10, respectively. The [Co(Phen)3]3+ ion is a cationic part of the complex in which the CoII atom has a distorted CoN6 octahedral environment, bidentately coordinating three phenanthroline molecules. Due to intermolecular hydrogen bonds (N–HO, O–HO), a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture is formed in the crystal, in which the polymer layers are packed parallel along the crystallographic axis a.

Abstract:
Few have examined the relationship between landscape color changes, landscape complexity, and laypersons’ visual preference ratings. We examined whether depictions of visual changes to plant and vegetative colors affect preference ratings, estimations of complexity, and computed color information entropy values. Photographs depicted four visual states of plant growth—winter dormancy, foliation, flowering, and senescence—in color at four locations on each of three landscape architecture project sites in New York and Pennsylvania. Participants viewed and evaluated the scenes depicted in the photographs for preference (n = 52) and estimated the presence of complexity (n = 47). A multiparadigm numerical computing environment performed algorithmic functions to calculate Shannon information entropy values of perceptual and categorical colors for each photograph. The visual changes depicted significantly affected perceptual color information entropy values, but significant effects were not found in three contrasts between values for the four stages of plant and vegetative growth. Preference ratings for foliated scenes were significantly higher than those for dormant and senescent scenes. Respondents’ complexity estimations for foliated scenes were lower than those of flowering and senescent, yet complexity and preference did not correlate. Preference correlated strongly and positively with perceptual color information entropy, which may help predict landscape preference. However, the presence of green foliage may affect preference more than perceptual color information entropy within scenes.

Abstract:
The structural features of the plasma membranes of avian sperm make them more sensitive, compared to those of mammals, to low-temperature stress. The qualitative and quantitative composition of membrane lipids can become a determining factor in the development of new effective compositions of cryoprotective media. The purpose of the study was to determine the lipid composition of the plasma membranes of native rooster sperm, the content of carbohydrates and polyols in their cytosol, as well as dynamic changes in the membrane lipidome and cytosol composition under the influence of the cryopreservation protocol, depending on the composition of the cryoprotective medium. The studies were carried out on Rhode Island roosters (n=10), the total and progressive sperm motility and membrane damage were determined. Semen freezing and thawing was carried out using fast protocols. To determine the lipid composition of the plasma membranes of sperm and the composition of their cytosol, a chromatographic analysis method was used. The following were identified in the membranes of native spermatozoa: phospholipids, glycolyllipids and neutral lipids, represented by phosphatidylethalamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin and sterol. A change in the ratio between membrane lipids of the inner and outer layers of the plasma membrane of rooster spermatozoa under the influence of the cryopreservation protocol was shown. In native spermftozoa this ratio was 41.2% and 39.4%, respectively, in thawed sperm when using the LCM-control medium – 38.3% and 47.2%, respectively, when using the LCM-T20 medium - 40.7% and 44.5%, respectively. There was a significant decrease, more than 3 times, in the total amount of carbohydrates (fructose, glucose, trehalose) and polyols (glycerol, mannitol, inositol) in the cytosol of frozen/thawed spermatozoa when using the cryoprotective medium LCM-control compared with the values of the native spermatozoa - 0 .1145 mg/ml and 0.0360 mg/ml, respectively. When using the LCM-T20 medium, the change was insignificant and the delta was 5.2%. The effectiveness of using cryoprotective medium LCM-T20 containing trehalose has been proven to maintain the lipid membrane architecture of rooster spermatozoa, the carbohydratepolyol composition of their cytosol and, as a consequence, the morphofunctional usefulness of gametes during the freezing/thawing process.

Abstract:
Abstract. Submicron aerosol particles (PM1) were measured in-situ using a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer during the summer 2009 Field Intensive Study at Queens College in New York, NY. Organic aerosol (OA) and sulfate are the two dominant species, accounting for 54% and 24%, respectively, of the total PM1 mass. The average mass-based size distribution of OA presents a small mode peaking at ~150 nm (Dva) and an accumulation mode (~550 nm) that is internally mixed with sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium. The diurnal cycles of both sulfate and OA peak between 01:00–02:00 p.m. EST due to photochemical production. The average (±σ) oxygen-to-carbon (O/C), hydrogen-to-carbon (H/C), and nitrogen-to-carbon (N/C) ratios of OA in NYC are 0.36 (±0.09), 1.49 (±0.08), and 0.012 (±0.005), respectively, corresponding to an average organic mass-to-carbon (OM/OC) ratio of 1.62 (±0.11). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) of the high resolution mass spectra identified two primary OA (POA) sources, traffic and cooking, and three secondary OA (SOA) components including a highly oxidized, regional low-volatility oxygenated OA (LV-OOA; O/C = 0.63), a less oxidized, semi-volatile SV-OOA (O/C = 0.38) and a unique nitrogen-enriched OA (NOA; N/C = 0.053) characterized with prominent CxH2x + 2N+ peaks likely from amino compounds. Our results indicate that cooking and traffic are two distinct and mass-equivalent POA sources in NYC, together contributing ~30% of the total OA mass during this study. The OA composition is dominated by secondary species, especially during high PM events. SV-OOA and LV-OOA on average account for 34% and 30%, respectively, of the total OA mass. The chemical evolution of SOA in NYC appears to progress with a continuous oxidation from SV-OOA to LV-OOA, which is further supported by a gradual increase of O/C ratio and a simultaneous decrease of H/C ratio in total OOA. Detailed analysis of NOA (5.8% of OA) presents evidence that organic nitrogen species such as amines might have played an important role in the atmospheric processing of OA in NYC, likely involving both acid-base chemistry and photochemistry. In addition, analysis of air mass trajectories and satellite imagery of aerosol optical depth (AOD) indicates that the high potential source regions of secondary sulfate and aged OA are mainly located in regions to the west and southwest of the city.

Abstract:
AimsBody composition (BC) is known to alter in heart failure. Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) improves left ventricular geometry but the impact on BC is unknown. Our aim was to evaluate BC in these patients before and after CRT implantation.MethodsProspective proof-of-concept pilot study of heart failure patients undergoing CRT between September 2014 and December 2015. Assessments performed pre-CRT and post-CRT (6 weeks and 6 months) were: BC parameters (using air-displacement plethysmography), New York Heart Failure classification for assessing symptom severity, echocardiography to assess left ventricular geometry, electrocardiography, Minnesota Heart Failure Questionnaire and N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP). Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to assess relative change over time and potential correlations.ResultsTwenty-five patients were recruited; mean-age (±SD) was 73.4±10.0 years, 23 males, 18 CRT defibrillators (remainder CRT pacemakers), 16 had ischaemic aetiology, 6 diabetics, 17 with left bundle-branch morphology on ECG and 10 had atrial fibrillation. Significant inverse correlations were observed in the first 6 weeks following CRT between fat mass and left ventricular end-diastolic volume (r=−0.69, p<0.01) and NT-pro-BNP and fat mass (r=0.41, p=0.05). No significant differences were noted over 6 months. There was an observed trend towards reduced fat mass in the first 6 weeks post-CRT implant driven by non-responders. There was no significant difference between responders and non-responders in BC over 6 months.ConclusionThis is the first study to observe interplay between BC and cardiac geometry/function following CRT; a trend in overall fat mass reduction was noted following CRT and merits further study.

Abstract:
The shortage of tissues and damaged organs led to the development of tissue engineering. Biological scaffolds, created from the extracellular matrix (ECM) of organs and tissues, have emerged as a promising solution for transplants. The ECM of decellularized auricular cartilage is a potential tool for producing ideal scaffolds for the recellularization and implantation of new tissue in damaged areas. In order to be classified as an ideal scaffold, it must be acellular, preserving its proteins and physical characteristics necessary for cell adhesion. This study aimed to develop a decellularization protocol for pig ear cartilage and evaluate the integrity of the ECM. Four tests were performed using different methods and protocols, with four pig ears from which the skin and subcutaneous tissue were removed, leaving only the cartilage. The most efficient protocol was the combination of trypsin with a sodium hydroxide solution (0.2 N) and SDS (1%) without altering the ECM conformation or the collagen architecture. In conclusion, it was observed that auricular cartilage is difficult to decellularize, influenced by material size, exposure time, and the composition of the solution. Freezing and thawing did not affect the procedure. The sample thickness significantly impacted the decellularization time.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the body composition, nutrient uptake in mammary gland and milk amino acid profile of lactating Etawah Crossbred goats fed by tempeh by product. Twelve lactating goats were randomly allocated into three groups which fed by ration containing concentrate (R1), concentrate plus 25% fresh tempeh waste (R2) and concentrate plus 25% fermented tempeh waste (R3). Tempeh waste was fermented by Aspergillus niger. Kinggrass was given 50% of the total ration for all groups. Urea space technique was used to measure body composition before and after the experiment was done. Milk production was calculated two times a day during two months after giving birth (postpartum). Total milk protein and amino acid, whey and casein were analyzed by kjeldahl method and amino acid analyzer respectively. Nutrient uptake in mammary gland was calculated base on Fick principles. Result showed that there was significantly different on body weight, but on body water, protein and fat had no significant difference between the treatments. The best milk production was found in fermented tempeh waste group. Concentration of glutamic acid was dominant than other essential amino acids in whole milk and casein but there were no significant difference between groups for those essential amino acid profile. It was concluded that fermented tempeh waste could substitute 50% of total concentrate and had the highest body weight, milk yield and nutrient uptake in the mammary gland of lactating Etawah Crossbred goats. Abstract:
Early Gothic Revival architecture in Canada, particularly from the period prior to the 1840s, when the influence of A. W. N. Pugin and the Ecclesiologists began to be felt, has been little studied. This paper reconstructs a lost monument-St. Mary's, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as erected 1820-1830-which may have been the first ambitious essay in the Gothic Revival style, especially as it apparently precedes by a few years the single and most famous monument of this time, the parish church of Notre-Dame in Montréal, itself often considered the starting point of the style in Canada. Although the exterior of St. Mary's was modest-essentially it was an exemplar of the rectangular box with "west" tower, definitively formulated by James Gibbs, and ubiquitous since the 1720s-with Gothic detailing replacing Baroque, the interior, known only from one watercolor and partly surviving today, is of greater interest. Divided into nave and aisles by piers of clustered shafts, the piers' form, plus plaster vaults and pointed arches, helped create an aura reminiscent of the Gothic period. The interior was dominated by the design of the sanctuary (now destroyed), where an unusual congregation of architectural forms suggests both the appearance of illusionistic architecture, with a possible connection to New York, and a further transformation of Baroque forms into their Gothic equivalents, with a possible connection to Québec City. Tenuous, circumstantial evidence will be provided to substantiate the plausibility of such sources. This paper also attempts to place St. Mary's in the context of the Gothic Revival in North America c. 1820-1830. As a result, it will be seen that its exterior, although without precedents in Canada, is typical of Gothic Revival churches of the period in the United States. By contrast, the interior design, especially of the sanctuary, suggests it was one of the more imaginative creations in either context. It therefore emerges as a more significant monument in the history of Canadian and North American architecture than heretofore suspected.

Abstract:
The rise of virtual reality and haptic technologies has created exciting new applications in medical training and education. In a dental simulation, haptic technology can create the illusion of substances (teeth, gingiva, bone, etc.) by providing interaction forces within a simulated virtual world of the mouth. In this article, a haptic periodontal training simulation system, named Haptodont, is developed and evaluated for simulating periodontal probing. Thirty-two faculty members from New York University College of Dentistry were recruited and divided into three groups to evaluate three fundamental functionalities: Group 1 evaluated bi-manual 3 Degrees of Freedome (DoF) haptic interaction, Group 2 evaluated bi-manual 3 DoF haptic interaction with a finger support mechanism, and Group 3 evaluated bi-manual 3 DoF haptic interaction with finger support mechanism and vibrotactile feedback. The probe and mirror interactions were simulated with the Geomagic Touch haptic device whereas the finger support was implemented using the Novint Falcon device. The three groups conducted two probing tasks: healthy gingiva scenario with no pockets (2- to 3-mm depth) and periodontitis scenario with deep pockets (4- to 8-mm depth). Results demonstrated that experts performed comparably to clinical settings in terms of probing depth error (within 0.3 to 0.6 mm) and probing forces (less than 0.5 N). Furthermore, the finger support mechanism significantly improved the probing accuracy for periodontitis condition in the lingual region. The argument that probing the lingual region is more difficult than the buccal region is supported by quantitative evidence (significantly higher probing depth error and probing force). Further research is planned to improve the usability of the finger support, integrate the Haptodont system into the pre-clinical curriculum, and evaluate the Haptodont system with dental students as a learning tool.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with progressive accumulation of genetic alterations in hematopoietic progenitors. Massive sequencing allows inference of the clonal architecture of hematologic malignancies, by determining the presence of subclones, their genetic composition and evolution. The objective of the present study was to determine the spectrum of mutations present at relapse and define the proportion of cellular clones and the genetic architecture of the evolution of patients with de novo AML. Methods: Paired samples (diagnostic/relapse) of 44 patients of the University Hospital La Fe with de novo AML and treated with consecutive PETHEMA schemes were studied. The samples were provided by the Biobanco La Fe. The median age was 59 years (range 17 - 89); 21M/13F; 17 patients with normal karyotype; 14 patients with FLT3-ITD positive and 9 with mutations in NPM1. Using an amplicon panel (Ampliseq, Life Technologies) for deep sequencing (10.000x) with an Ion Torrent Proton, the complete coding regions of the following genes were sequenced, BCOR, BRAF, CDKN2A, CEBPA, DNMT3A, ETV6, EZH2, GNAS, LUC7L2, NF1, PHF6, PTPN11, RAD21, RPS14, SF1, SF3A1, SMC3, SPARC, SRSF2, STAG2 and ZRSR2, as well as, the hotspot regions of ASXL1, MPL, NPM1, JAK2, KRAS, NRAS, TET2, U2AF1, KIT, IDH1, RUNX1, IDH2, SETBP1, TP53, WT1, CBL, SF3B1 and FLT3. Primary bioinformatic analysis was performed using an in-house protocol and variants were selected based on VAF ≥ 1%, its absence in the healthy population (UCSC Common SNPs; MAF < 0.01) and its putative effect on the protein. Results: At least one alteration was detected in 98% of patients, (n = 43). At a mean sequencing depth of 8967x, in total, 249 mutations were detected with an average of 3.3 mutations per patient and sample (range 0 - 8). Comparing the two time points, we noted that 45% of the mutations were present at both moments, with rather similar VAF values. However, 24% were acquired during progression while 31% went missing at the time of relapse. Regarding the mutated genes analyzed at diagnosis, in 8 of 44 patients one single gene clone was detected, in 26 two subclones and in 10 three or more subclones. In addition, two different patterns of clonal evolution were detected. In model 1 the dominant founder clone persisted at relapse (n = 32, 71%), occasionally acquiring new changes, either in the same clone (n = 5) or in a new subclone (n = 17). In model 2 the founder clone was displaced at relapse by new subclones (n = 12, 29%), probably due to selective pressure through competition between subclones or as a consequence of the chemotherapy. Furthermore, the clonal hematopoiesis models did not show an association with clinical variables or prognostic impact on OS or EFS (P = 0.317; P = 0.12, respectively). Conclusions: AML cells can acquire additional mutations at relapse. Some of those may contribute to the clonal selection responsible for disease progression. Two models of clonal evolution were observed: model 1, where the dominant founder clone persists during relapse, and, model 2, where the founder clone is displaced by new cell subclones, displaying, both models, a similar impact on outcome. Abstract:
Understanding the adsorption features of polymer microgels with different chemical compositions and structures is crucial in studying the mechanisms of respective emulsion stabilization. Specifically, the use of stimuli-responsive particles can introduce new properties and broaden the application range of such complex systems. Recently, we demonstrated that emulsions stabilized by microgels composed of interpenetrating networks (IPNs) of poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) exhibit higher colloidal stability upon heating compared to PNIPAM homopolymer and other relevant PNIPAM-based copolymer counterparts. In the present work, using pendant drop tensiometry, we studied the evolution of water–tetradecane interfacial tension during the adsorption of PNIPAM-PAA IPN particles, comparing them with single-network P-(NIPAM-co-AA) and PNIPAM microgels. The results showed that, despite having the same chemical composition, copolymer particles exhibit completely different adsorption behavior in comparison to other microgel architectures. The observed disparity can be attributed to the nonuniform distribution of charged acrylic acid groups within the P-(NIPAM-co-AA) network obtained through precipitation polymerization. Oppositely, the presence of IPN architecture provides a uniform distribution of different monomers inside respective microgels. Additionally, hydrogen bonding between PNIPAM and PAA subchains appears to reduce the electrostatic energy barrier, enhancing the ability of IPN particles to successfully cover the liquid interface. Overall, our findings confirm the efficiency of using PNIPAM-PAA IPN microgels for the preparation of oil-in-water emulsions and their stability, even when the temperature rises above the lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM.

Abstract:
Different spatial layers in the architectural structure of a building can create particular spatial relations and an architectural space that cannot be defined as an inner space or as an outer space, but one which has the characteristics of both. This space, which can be called ?in between space?, appears as the result of a specific design concept in which the architectural composition is created by gradual insertion of volumes one inside another, like a box that is placed inside a box, inside of which is placed another smaller box and so on. The incorporation of various layers in the spatial arrangement of volumes in certain architectural compositions can be conceived as a possible approach in connecting the interior and exterior. This kind of conceptual design distinguishes itself from the common approach by its specific architecture that offers richness, variety, complexity and unique perception of space, thereby increasing its value. The paper investigates this particular concept through the analysis of four residential houses (Villa Le Lac by Le Corbusier, Solar House by Oswald Mathias Ungers, House N by Sou Fujimoto and Guerrero House by Alberto Campo Baeza), and it strives to find out the concept?s use and advantages, all with the aim of opening up new possibilities in the design of buildings and enriching the design process.

Abstract:
The gate church of the Theodorite castle near the village of Funa appeared in 1459 and existed to 1778. Left unattended later on, it became decayed, quickly dilapidated, and finally turning into ruin after the earthquake of 1927. The experts’ conclusions concerning its origin are based mainly on the typical features of the architectonics and carved decoration of the structure, correlated with the traditions of Armenian architecture and Seljuk ornamentation. The most exquisite architectural detail of the building is the large slab with relief ornamentation that overlapped from outside the doorway of the south entrance. Two iconographic sources are published for the first time to supply new information about the slab in question along with the results of a substantive study of a large fragment of the artefact which was found by chance outside the castle short time ago. Almost a half of the composition that adorned the outermost part of the architrave survived. Its completely lost middle part can be reconstructed reliably by the photograph taken by N. N. Klepinin and the drawing by D. M. Strukov. The ornamental motif of the slab is one of the most popular in mediaeval art, being typical of the eastern decorative tradition. It is still not possible to discover the origin and exact date of the architrave which was secondary used in the church of 1459. Stylistically, structurally, and technologically it is comparable with carved architectural details of many main buildings of the capital town of Theodoro, which were erected in the 1420s. Therefore, the slab in question possibly has the same chronology, but still it could be made even earlier.

Abstract:
Eight sulfated triterpene glycosides, peronioside A (1) and psolusosides A (2), B (3), G (4), I (5), L (6), N (7) and P (8), were isolated from the sea cucumber Psolus peronii. Peronioside A (1) is a new glycoside, while compounds 2–8 were found previously in Psolus fabricii, indicating the phylogenetic and systematic closeness of these species of sea cucumbers. The activity of 1–8 against human erythrocytes and their cytotoxicity against the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, T-47D and triple-negative MDA-MB-231 were tested. The most active against cancer cell compounds, psolusosides A (2) and L (6), which were not cytotoxic to the non-transformed cells of the mammary gland, were chosen to study the inhibition of the migration, formation and growth of colonies of the cancer cell lines. Glycoside 2 effectively inhibited the growth of colonies and the migration of the MDA-MB-231 cell line. Compound 6 blocked the growth of colonies of T-47D cells and showed a pronounced antimigration effect on MDA-MB-231 cells. The quantitative structure–activity relationships (QSAR) indicated the strong impact on the activity of the form and size of the molecules, which is connected to the length and architecture of the carbohydrate chain, the distribution of charge on the molecules’ surface and various aspects of hydrogen bond formation, depending on the quantity and positions of the sulfate groups. The QSAR calculations were in good accordance with the observed SAR tendencies.

Palabras clave: historia cuantitativa, Oeste americano, migraciones, diarios de viaje, Overland TrailTopónimo: Estados UnidosPeríodo: siglo xix ABSTRACT Among the many documentary sources historians have at their disposal when dealing with studies, the personal diary is perhaps one of the most interesting ones. This type of material not only allows us to know a little better the thoughts and emotions of their own authors but also certain aspects of the historical moment in which they were conceived, therefore its content is fundamental when it comes to understand a migration phenomenon as unique as the one that took place in the American West during the second half of the nineteenth century.Based on the proposals of Ralph K. White and John Mack Faragher, this article presents a readaptation of ‘Value analysis’ proposing a selection of 65 values and 7 thematic groups which have been used to determine the main interests and concerns of the American pioneers revising for this purpose fourteen diaries of that time. Abstract:
The main problem in the general problem of knowledge manipulation is the problem of determining the composition and content of the subject area for which this problem is being solved. It has been established that there are two fundamentally different approaches to solving knowledge manipulation problems. The first approach consists in the application of methods of automatic data processing using computers and corresponding algorithms based on the rules of formal logic to obtain new knowledge about objects in the subject area. For the first approach, the objects of the domain are precisely the physical objects of animate and inanimate nature in their existence, which have their characteristics and between which the corresponding relations are established. The second approach is to use the ability of the human intellect to measure things and their properties based on the laws of dialectical logic. The second approach is characterized by the cognition of knowledge about the activity of objects of living nature, primarily humans. In this case, computers are used, as a rule, to represent already established knowledge in an appropriate form. One such form of knowledge representation is a logical model of a Cartesian coordinate system. The analysis of this model has shown that the logical principle of its formation is the principle of the dialectical unity of the concepts of “general” and “unit”, which is used to form the composition and content of diametrically opposite coordinate axes from numerical sets. On the other hand, there are a significant number of logical models in which the composition and content of the elements of the sets that form the coordinate axes correspond to certain knowledge about human activity. These models also implement the principle of their formation in the form of a dialectical unity of the concepts of “general” “unit”, which is used to form the composition and content of diametrically opposite coordinate axes from the sets of which certain knowledge is. It should be noted that in each of the studied approaches to knowledge manipulation, the concept of “measure” is not applied. On the other hand, this concept is decisive in the formation of knowledge about human activities and their manipulation. The research of the properties of the logical model of the meta-knowledge measure has been carried out. For this model, the content of the concepts “measure of meta-knowledge”, “unit of measure of meta-knowledge” and “unit of measure of knowledge” is established. The graphical representation of the logical model of knowledge representation about human activity in the logical model of the meta-knowledge measure is the architecture of the matrix representation. The main advantage of this view is that it implements a many-to-many (M: N) relationship, which is prohibited in relational databases. The analysis of the level of compliance of the proposed logical model of the meta-knowledge measure with certain requirements for knowledge manipulation models is carried out. A high level of compliance with these requirements has been established. Taking into account the established properties of the architecture of the logical model of meta-knowledge, it is proposed to define this model in the form of a post-Descartes representation of meta-knowledge about the activity.

Abstract:
AbstractDiet-microbe interactions play an important role in modulating the early-life microbiota, with Bifidobacterium strains and species dominating the gut of breast-fed infants. Here, we sought to explore how infant diet drives distinct bifidobacterial community composition and dynamics within individual infant ecosystems. Genomic characterisation of 19 strains isolated from breast-fed infants revealed a diverse genomic architecture enriched in carbohydrate metabolism genes, which was distinct to each strain, but collectively formed a pangenome across infants. Presence of gene clusters implicated in digestion of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) varied between species, with growth studies indicating that within single infants there were differences in the ability to utilise 2′FL and LNnT HMOs between strains. Cross-feeding experiments were performed with HMO degraders and non-HMO users (using spent or ‘conditioned’ media and direct co-culture). Further 1H-NMR analysis identified fucose, galactose, acetate, and N-acetylglucosamine as key by-products of HMO metabolism; as demonstrated by modest growth of non-HMO users on spend media from HMO metabolism. These experiments indicate how HMO metabolism permits the sharing of resources to maximise nutrient consumption from the diet and highlights the cooperative nature of bifidobacterial strains and their role as ‘foundation’ species in the infant ecosystem. The intra- and inter-infant bifidobacterial community behaviour may contribute to the diversity and dominance of Bifidobacterium in early life and suggests avenues for future development of new diet and microbiota-based therapies to promote infant health.

Abstract:
The composition of instrumental and vocal music in this creation came from the art of badondong baibo and was developed into an instrumental music performance in the form of a musical composition with an orchestra format. The principle of the formulation of the creation of conventional music science. While the purpose of this creation is 1) to create badondong baibo art with different contexts and functions into modern music compositions and develop it using conventional techniques, 2) to realize musical ideas inspired by badondong baibo art and make it a new musical composition. . While the method of creation is carried out in three stages, namely; 1) data collection stage, 2) creation stage and 3) evaluation stage. This composition can be concluded that; a) creating musical compositions derived from regional arts has its own difficulties, where the creator must understand and explore the arts of the area, b) badondong is a new musical composition that is adapted from the melodies and vocals of badondong baibo in the Danto area of East Kampar district, c) the tone of the composition this music is a modified "nandung-nandung" melody without reducing the basic "nandung-nandung" melody, d) this badondong baibo vocal is sung by a vocalist to show the main theme in the creation of this musical composition, e) this composition is in the form of an orchestra format, f) This badondong is a musical composition with a lot of development, and is presented in the context of performing arts. Keywords: badondong, baibo, composition, music. Abstract:
Research subject. The author investigates sections of the Vendian stratigraphy in the West Bashkirian subzone, written for an Explanatory Note to sheet N-40 – Ufa of the State Geological Map 1000/3 of the Russian Federation, as well as the results obtained with various thematic (stratigraphic, paleontological, lithogeochemical, paleomagnetic, etc.) studies of theVendian sedimentary sequences of the indicated subzone of the Bashkirian meganticlinorium. Materials and methods. A comparison and analysis of research materials was conducted. The research materials included facts, ideas and arguments in favor of certain conclusions and ideas of various authors. Results. A suggestion was made that studies into the architecture of the Vendian deposits of the Southern Urals, apparently, had almost reached perfection. At the same time, the affiliation of different formations to the regional stages of the Vendian of the East European Platform is still interpreted differently. Studies into the Vendian macro- and microfauna on the western slope of the Southern Urals can only be considered at their nascent stage. The dating of detrital zircons from sandstones of the Asha Group should undoubtedly be continued. For the Vendian of the western slope of the Southern Urals, the first steps have been taken regarding the dating of zircons from volcanic tuffs/ashes. These works are still far from being completed. The peak of paleomagnetic studies into the sedimentary sequences of the Vendian, to a certain extent, may have been passed; nevertheless, these research works should also be continued. Finally, only preliminary steps were taken more than 20 years ago in the study of the chemical composition of heavy minerals, which made it possible to obtain fundamentally new information on the composition and evolution of the sources of clastic material for the sedimentary sequences of the Asha Group. Works of this kind also needs to be continued. Conclusion. The conducted analysis of the studies into the Vendian sedimentary sequences of the Southern Urals published in the first two decades of the 21st century made it possible to identify their strengths and weaknesses, as well as to outline directions for further work.
