Full textImitation is a basic human ability, present very early in infancy and developing throughout life. It is the reproduction of an observed model’s action. The present study was devoted to the investigation of the imitative perspective-taking. When asked to play acts observed, subjects have two modes: anatomical imitation, which is to use the same side of the body as the model (if the model uses his right limb, the subject imitate with his right limb), and mirror imitation, a product of a spatial match between stimulus and response (if the model uses his right limb, the subject imitate with its left limb). Thirty healthy subjects (aged 21-53 years), and twelve callosotomized patients (aged 26-57 years) submitted to complete or partial resection of the corpus callosum for control of epilepsy, participated in the study. The task was to imitate intransitive meaningful and meaningless gestures performed by a model shown in videos and located in third person perspective (180°). In “free sessions”, subjects freely chose the limb to imitate gestures shown, while in “driven sessions” they had to use the same and the opposite limb of the model. In free sessions, both control subjects and callosotomized patients mainly used the mirror perspective (60% and 66%, respectively). In driven sessions, the former group used the anatomical perspective (93%), the latter preferred the mirror perspective of imitation (61%). Since the main difference between the two groups is the integrity of the corpus callosum, and since to assume the anatomical perspective of imitation it is necessary to activate the Mental Rotation mechanism, likely sustained by the corpus callosum, it could be hypothesized that the callosotomized patients are unable to take anatomical perspective probably because their Mental Rotation mechanism is impaired, due to a lack of specific callosal regions.
