Abstract:
Damage Mechanisms and Life Assessment of High-Temperature Components deals with the underlying causes of high-temperature failures and their effect on component life and reliability. The first few chapters develop the theory necessary to understand and analyze high-temperature damage phenomena, including fracture, creep, and fatigue. Various forms of embrittlement and corrosion are also addressed as are creep-fatigue, thermal fatigue, and welding defects. The chapters that follow discuss the practical implications of these phenomena, explaining how to assess damage and estimate the remaining service life of boiler tubes, turbine blades, reactor vessels, nozzles, and other components. Life-assessment procedures draw on a knowledge of design, material behavior, and nondestructive inspection techniques, which are covered as well. The book makes extensive use of data plots, diagrams, and images and includes many worked-out examples and case histories. It also serves as a ready source of material property data. Abstract:
Psychological, existential, spiritual, and social issues cause much suffering and deserve extensive study to understand these concerns more fully and to intervene more effectively. Themes that abound include communication, coping, ethics, the family, caregiving, quality of life, death and dying, psychiatric disorders, suffering, and the many expressions of distress. Many study designs are possible to explore these themes, often with complementary quantitative and qualitative components. This chapter summarizes the psychometric properties of many of the instruments that are commonly employed in such studies and the computer-assisted software packages that assist qualitative analyses. The goal is to strengthen research design and optimize research outcomes to benefit the discipline.

Abstract:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: Understanding and optimizing quality of life and psychological well-being presents a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the enhancement of the lives of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers. ALS is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder. No current medical therapy can reverse or stop its progression, and the promotion of quality of life and psychological well-being is a central component of ALS care. Health care professionals who work in this field should incorporate attention to psychological, emotional, and relational aspects of the disease into their approach to care. This book provides some of the knowledge and direction necessary for optimizing the quality of care for individuals with ALS and their caregivers. Topics discussed include an ALS-centred view of quality of life, depressive features, anxiety, resilience, cognitive impairment, complementary and alternative medicines, and psychological research. Specific elements of ALS, such as end-of-life concerns and bulbar dysfunction, are described through the lens of their psychological impact. There is extensive discussion of the development of new psychological treatments, as well as the impact and incorporation of new technologies, with the goal of fostering optimal quality of life and psychological well-being as key parts of a holistic approach to care for the patients and for those who are close to such individuals.

Abstract:
Statistics is a fundamental component of the scientific toolbox, but learning the basics of this area of mathematics is one of the most challenging parts of a research training. This book gives an up-to-date introduction to the classical techniques and modern extensions of linear-model analysis—one of the most useful approaches in the analysis of scientific data in the life and environmental sciences. The book emphasizes an estimation-based approach that takes account of recent criticisms of overuse of probability values and introduces the alternative approach using information criteria. The book is based on the use of the open-source R programming language for statistics and graphics, which is rapidly becoming the lingua franca in many areas of science. This second edition adds new chapters, including one discussing some of the complexities of linear-model analysis and another introducing reproducible research documents using the R Markdown package. Statistics is introduced through worked analyses performed in R using interesting data sets from ecology, evolutionary biology, and environmental science. The data sets and R scripts are available as supporting material.

Abstract:
This book offers a history of the Wabash Railroad Company, a once-vital interregional carrier. Like most major American carriers, the Wabash grew out of an assortment of small firms. Thanks in part to the genius of financier Jay Gould, by the early 1880s what was then known as the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railway reached the principal gateways of Chicago, Des Moines, Detroit, Kansas City, and St. Louis. In the 1890s, the Wabash gained access to Buffalo and direct connections to Boston and New York City. One extension fizzled, and in 1904 entry into Pittsburgh caused financial turmoil, ultimately throwing the Wabash into receivership. A subsequent reorganization allowed the Wabash to become an important carrier during the go-go years of the 1920s and permitted the company to take control of a strategic “bridge” property, the Ann Arbor Railroad. The Great Depression forced the company into another receivership, but an effective reorganization during the early days of World War II gave rise to a generally robust road. In the 1960s, the Wabash, along with the Nickel Plate Road, joined the prosperous Norfolk & Western Railway, a merger that worked well for all three carriers. Immortalized in the popular folk song “Wabash Cannonball,” the midwestern railroad has left important legacies. Today, forty years after becoming a “fallen flag” carrier, key components of the former Wabash remain busy rail arteries and terminals, attesting to its historic value to American transportation.

McKeon, Andrew, B. Mark Keegan, and W. Oliver Tobin. Mayo Clinic Cases in Neuroimmunology. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780197583425.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past 2 decades, diagnostics and therapeutics in neuroimmunology have rapidly evolved and increased in complexity. Diagnosis is assisted by various laboratory and advanced imaging techniques. Randomized clinical trials in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, and smaller studies for rarer autoimmune diseases, have led to distinct immune molecule–targeted and mechanism-specific therapies. The fields of cerebrovascular medicine, neurooncology, and neuroinfectious diseases have not remained static either. All of these gains present a challenge, however, in that early and accurate neurologic diagnosis is more important than ever. In our experience, some diagnostic pitfalls lie in the interpretation of test results and images without reference to the nuances of the clinical history and examination. Although some things change (eg, technology), other things never change (eg, clinical common sense). The 83 case-based chapters focus on key components of the history, examination and test findings, and differential diagnosis, although we also reference treatment approaches extensively throughout. To bring some form to this extensive repertoire of cases, the book is divided into 3 sections covering central nervous system demyelinating disease, autoimmune neurologic disorders, and others. Illustrations include imaging and, where relevant, pathologic images and video material. Board review–style questions are also provided.
