Abstract:
Imaging has always been a key component in the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis as part of the modified New York criteria. With the increased availability of MRI and the development of the ASAS axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) criteria, there has been a shift from x-ray imaging of structural damage to MRI imaging of inflammation. This information can help in both the diagnosis of axSpA and in guiding treatment decisions in patients with this diagnosis. However, imaging results must be evaluated in the context of the clinical picture and should not be acted on in isolation. Here we review the key imaging modalities used in axSpA, with the main focus on x-rays and MRI of the sacroiliac joints, spine, and peripheral structures. Advances in technology are also likely to lead to the development of even better imaging modalities for axSpA in future.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter presents three overarching arguments that form the centerpiece of the ideas engaged in this book. First, sexuality as a component of human behavior cannot be understood in isolation from wider historical processes. Indeed, sexuality was one of the intricate sites through which several core ideas of colonial practices and thinking about modernity were configured and reconfigured. Second, the age of females who practiced prostitution played a significant role in molding the perception and institutional attention toward sex work, exemplifying the constructed difference between child and adult sexualities. Third, the intersection between sexuality and nationalism in Africa is far more complex than the present literature reveals. In Nigeria, sexualized nationalism was an aspect of the moral, cultural, economic, and political nationalisms championed by both men and women who felt that certain expressions of sexuality threatened nation-building.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the current literature’s findings on how political and social interactions shape voter turnout and other forms of political participation. Current studies, which use a wide range of methodological approaches, from natural experiments and surveys to mathematical modeling, have demonstrated that political networks are a crucial component of any analysis of political behavior. Debates over the potentially negative impact of political disagreement on participation have differentiated the negative impact of political isolation from the neutral impact of heterogenous political discussion environments, while also exploring factors that might moderate an individual’s response to disagreement. Many of the studies reviewed in this chapter reflect an increasing interest in how research design and analysis may be used to disentangle the various mechanisms through which networks might shape political behavior, as well as to distinguish between the relative impact of selection and influence.

Abstract:
Abstract During the last two decades, the interrelationship between water and energy has become recognized. Likewise, the couplings to food and agriculture are getting increasingly obvious and alarming. In the last year, a record number of extreme weather events have been reported from most parts of the world. This is a visible demonstration how consequences of climate change must be understood and alleviated. The impacts of economics, lifestyle, and alarming inequalities are becoming increasingly recognisable. If the wealthy part of the world is not willing not make radical changes it does not matter what the less wealthy half of the global population will do to meet the climate and resource crisis. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate and describe how climate change, water, energy, food, and lifestyle are closely depending on each other. It is not sufficient to handle one discipline isolated from the others. This is the traditional “component view”. The book defines and describes a systems view. The communications and relationships between the “components” have to be described and recognized. Consequently, the development of one discipline must be approached from a systems perspective. At the same time, the success of the systems perspective depends on the degree of knowledge of the individual parts or disciplines. The catchphrase of systems thinking has been caught in the phrase, “The whole is more than the sum of its parts”. The idea is not new: the origin of this phrase is to be found already in Aristotle's Metaphysics more than 2300 years ago. The text may serve as an academic text (in engineering, economics, and environmental science) to introduce senior undergraduate and graduate students into systems thinking. Too often education encourages a “silo” thinking. Current global challenges can't be solved in isolation; they depend on each other. For example, water professionals should have a basic understanding of energy issues. Energy professionals ought to understand the dependency on water. Economic students should learn more how economy depends on natural resources like energy and water. Economics must include the environmental impact and ecological ceiling of economic activities. Stuart, Casey-Maslen, Clapham Andrew, Giacca Gilles, and Parker Sarah. Art.11 Diversion. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198723523.003.0015.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses Article 11 of the ATT. The article includes a series of obligations and commitments aimed at preventing, addressing, and comprehending the diversion of conventional arms, generally understood as delivery to an unauthorized end user or unauthorized use by an authorized end user. The commitments pertain to all states parties involved in the transfer of arms including exporting, importing, transit, and trans-shipment states, as well as those involved in any brokering activities relating to a proposed transfer. The obligations concern only the possible diversion of conventional arms covered under Article 2(1), not ammunition/munitions or parts and components. Co-operation and assistance, particularly information-sharing among states parties, are central to the provisions in Article 11, highlighting that the diversion of conventional arms is not something that states can prevent or address in isolation from each other.

Abstract:
Canonical and non-canonical gospels are typically studied in relative isolation from each other. The book shows why this need not be the case. Early Christian authors produced a mass of gospel literature to meet the demands of a growing Christian reading public for ever more material relating to Jesus and his earthly existence, and out of that proliferating body of work a consensus formed around a fourfold gospel whose originally anonymous components were ascribed to Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Yet a significant number of marginalized non-canonical texts have survived, in whole or in part, and the canonical boundary should not inhibit exploration of their relationship to their historically more successful counterparts. Thus the purpose of this book is to trace some of the many thematic similarities and differences within the field of early gospel literature, and to develop an interpretative practice that respects the integrity of that field.

Abstract:
Chapter 9 presents the basic components of Israel’s foreign policy, as distinct from defense, and its primary foreign relations today. Together, they comprise a “diplomatic response,” the foreign policy equivalent of Israel’s military responses. It includes strategic relationships with a number of countries, above all the United States, unique ties with the diaspora, the pursuit of peace, and soft power. Arab hostility and international isolation forced Israeli diplomacy into a defensive posture, and it has become subordinate to defense policy. Nevertheless, a number of governments have made dramatic peace proposals, and a shared threat perception is creating new possibilities for cooperation with Sunni states. Jordan’s stability remains of vital importance. Israel’s attempts to intervene in Arab politics were never very successful, and it has largely ceased trying to do so. Israel’s deep bilateral ties with European and other Western countries are increasingly marred by the Palestinian issue.

Haigh, Michael S. Fundamentals and Commodity Prices. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190656010.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Commodity markets occasionally co-move with the broader macro markets for reasons beyond their own fundamentally driven physical characteristics. This chapter focuses on two related avenues to look beyond the fundamentals of counting barrels, tonnes, bushels, or molecules. The first section uses a principal component analysis to disentangle how fundamentals versus non-fundamentals drive commodity prices and focuses on the crude oil market. The results are intuitive and allow isolating the extent to which supply and demand matter to price changes experienced in the market. Furthermore, the results enable understanding whether the diversification benefits of commodity markets exist in almost real time. Second, given the ability to segment fundamentally driven commodities from others, the chapter focuses on how much supply or demand factors attribute to the fundamental variation in prices. The analysis reveals that, in the oil market, supply concerns drive prices during geopolitical tensions, while demand concerns dominate during economic crises.

Stewart, Alex G., Sam Ghebrehewet, and David Baxter. Business continuity: Illustrated by hospital ward closures. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198745471.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the strategies for business continuity when a significant challenging event affects a hospital or other healthcare provider: the scenario is a norovirus outbreak affecting several wards and staff. The strategy includes business impact analysis and a disaster recovery plan. The importance of developing a generic response plan, rather than a response for each type of incident, is emphasized. The early involvement of the infection control team, isolating or cohorting patients, and liaison with the community are essential components of the response. The chapter describes how a ‘less serious event’ (a few reported cases) may rapidly escalate into a major incident. The business continuity plan should be implemented early, and should identify which services can be stopped, and which must continue. Finally, the importance of holding a multi-agency and multi-professional debrief meeting as soon as the incident is declared over is emphasized, with revision of the plan accordingly.

Abstract:
This book investigates the metaphysical presuppositions of a common—and very successful—reductive approach to dealing with the complexity of the world. The reductive approach in question is one in which we study the components of a complex system in relative isolation, and use the information so gained to explain or predict the behaviour of the complex whole. So, for example, ecologists explain shifts in species population in terms of interactions between individuals, geneticists explain traits of an organism in terms of interactions between genes, and physicists explain the properties of a gas in terms of collisions between the particles that make up the gas. It is argued that this reductive method makes substantive metaphysical assumptions about the world. In particular, the method assumes the existence of causal powers that manifest ‘causal influence’—a relatively unrecognized ontological category of which forces are a paradigm example. The success of the reductive method, therefore, is an argument for the existence of such causal influence. The book goes on to show that adding causal influence to our ontology gives us the resources to solve some traditional problems in the metaphysics of powers, causation, emergence, laws of nature, and possibly even normative ethics. What results, then, is not just an understanding of the reductive method, but an integrated metaphysical world view that is grounded in a novel ontology of power and influence.

Chen, C. Julian. Introduction to Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. 3rd ed. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198856559.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) was invented by Binnig and Rohrer and received a Nobel Prize of Physics in 1986. Together with the atomic force microscope (AFM), it enables non-destructive observing and mapping atoms and molecules on solid surfaces down to a picometer resolution. A recent development is the non-destructive observation of wavefunctions in individual atoms and molecules, including nodal structures inside the wavefunctions. STM and AFM have become indespensible instruments for scientists of various disciplines, including physicists, chemists, engineers, and biologists to visualize and utilize the microscopic world around us. Since the publication of the first edition in 1993, this book has been recognized as a standard introduction for everyone that starts working with scanning probe microscopes, and a useful reference book for those more advanced in the field. After an Overview chapter accessible for newcomers at an entry level presenting the basic design, scientific background, and illustrative applications, the book has three Parts. Part I, Principles, provides the most systematic and detailed theory of its scientific bases from basic quantum mechancis and condensed-metter physics in all available literature. Quantitative analysis of its imaging mechanism for atoms, molecules, and wavefunctions is detailed. Part II, Instrumentation, provides down to earth descriptions of its building components, including piezoelectric scanners, vibration isolation, electronics, software, probe tip preparation, etc. Part III, Related methods, presenting two of its most important siblings, scanning tunnelling specgroscopy and atomic force miscsoscopy. The book has five appendices for background topics, and 405 references for further readings.
