Abstract:
AbstractAn approach to establish a master curve for effective creep compliances of polymeric off-axis composites with various fiber orientations was presented. Carbon/epoxy composite IM7/977–3 was used to fabricate four types of off-axis specimens and then subjected to momentary creep tests after a period of initial aging. Creep compliance and elastic compliance were separated from the total compliance. Using one-parameter creep potential theory, creep compliances were transformed to effective creep compliances. After choosing a proper value for the one-parameter, all effective creep compliances with various off-axis fiber orientations were superposed into a master curve. This master curve enables us to obtain creep compliance with any off-axis fiber orientation by testing only one off-axis specimen.

Abstract:
In robotic processes, the compliance of the robot arm plays a very important role. In some conditions, for example, in robotic assembly, robot arm compliance can compensate for small position and orientation errors of the end-effector. In other processes, like machining, robot compliance may generate chatter vibrations with an impairment in the quality of the machined surface. In industrial robots, the compliance of the end-effector is chiefly due to joint compliances. In this paper, joint compliances of a serial six-joint industrial robot are identified with a novel modal method making use of specific modes of vibration dominated by the compliance of only one joint. Then, in order to represent the effect of the identified compliances on robot performance in an intuitive and geometric way, a novel kinematic method based on the concept of “Mozzi axis” of the end-effector is presented and discussed.

Yockey, Joseph. "The Compliance Case for Social Enterprise." Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review, no. 4.1 (2014): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.36639/mbelr.4.1.compliance.

Full text
Abstract:
Social enterprises generate revenue to solve social, humanitarian, and ecological problems. Their products are not a means to the end of profits, but rather profits are a means to the end of their production. This dynamic presents many of the same corporate governance issues facing other forprofit firms, including legal compliance. The author contends, however, that traditional strategies for corporate compliance are incongruent to the social enterprise’s unique normative framework. Specifically, traditional compliance theory, with its prioritization of shareholder interests, stands at odds with the social enterprise’s mission-driven purpose. Attention to this distinction is essential for developing effective compliance and enforcement policies in the future. Indeed, arguably the greatest feature of the social enterprise is its potential to harness organizational characteristics that inspire the values and culture most closely linked with ethical behavior— without resort to more costly or intrusive measures.

Abstract:
In hockey, players experience different compliances during impacts to the head, from stiff ice to compliant collisions against other players. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of striking compliance in ice hockey impacts and its influence on dynamic response and brain tissue strain. Three striking caps of low, medium, and high compliances were used to impact a helmeted 50th-percentile Hybrid III headform. The headform was impacted at five locations at three velocities, representative of collision scenarios in hockey. The dependent variables, peak resultant linear and rotational acceleration as well as maximum principal strain were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance to determine significant differences between the compliances. The results indicated a significant effect of compliance on the responses of the headform. As expected, low-impact compliance resulted in higher linear and rotational accelerations when compared to the medium and high compliance conditions. However, while the linear and rotational acceleration responses of the medium and high compliance conditions would indicate a low chance of brain injury, the maximum principal strain magnitudes indicated a high likelihood of concussion. Medium- and high-impact compliances are a factor that has not been considered when designing and testing helmet technology in sport, with current methods reflective of low compliance surfaces, that is, those with high stiffness and rigidity. The results of this study demonstrate that an impact compliance is an important factor in producing brain injury and should be considered when certifying helmets through standard testing to mitigate the risk of brain injury.

Therefore this edition of CEJ is dedicated to pressing criminal and compliance-related questions in connection with the coronavirus-pandemic. Furthermore we will focus on another branch of digitization: Namely cryptocurrencies and financial technology. The key issue of last CEJ-edition, Corporate Criminal Liability, will be deepened, as there have been notable (and given the current situation, questionable) developments in the German legislative process. Fittingly, the topic of whistleblower protection in Switzerland will be addressed and two books, dealing with the modern legal advice market, will be reviewed.

Abstract:
In this section we implement a characterization based on eigen-twists and eigen-wrenches for the deformation of a compliant mechanism at a given point of interest. For 2-D mechanisms, this involves characterizing the compliance matrix at a unique point called the center of elasticity. At the center of elasticity, the translation and rotational compliances are decoupled. We give an intuitive graphical understanding of compliance at this point by representing the translational compliance as an ellipse and the coupling between the translational and rotational parameters as vectors (Coupling vectors). This representation gives us an intuitive understanding of series and parallel combination of building blocks. We obtain a parametric variation of these quantities for a compliant dyad building block, and show with examples how a mechanism can be synthesized by a combination of building blocks to obtain desired deformation requirements. We also propose a combination of series and parallel concatenation to achieve more than one specification simultaneously. Such a characterization can be extended to synthesize involving multiple ports.
