Abstract:
This volume completes the valuable work of cataloguing carried out on the correspondence of Giuseppe Dessí conserved in the 'Alessandro Bonsanti' contemporary archive of Florence. The research, launched by Chiara Andrei in 2003 with the edition of the Corrispondenze familiari (Firenze University Press) and continued in 2009 by Francesca Nencioni with the publication of Lettere di amici e lettori (Firenze University Press), has its third result in this work by Francesca Nencioni, who has indexed the unpublished editorial and professional material, providing it with exhaustive references. The letters make it possible to trace a profile of the writer from his youth through to the 70s, illustrating the historic, political and cultural backdrop against which the events and activities of both his first and second profession developed. This casts light not only his complex professional career, but also on Dessí's collaboration with newspapers and journals, his relations with publishers and his contacts with the world of the mass media. Of particular importance is the appendix of unpublished letters, meticulously edited by Monica Graceffa, comprising the correspondence with two seminal journals of the 1930s and 40s «L'Orto» and «Primato». In the background are the figures of Bottai and Vecchietti and the complex coexistence between the intellectuals of the time and the regime.

Abstract:
This article deals with complex networks, and in particular small world and scale free networks. Various networks exhibit the small world phenomenon, including social networks and gene expression networks. The local ordering property of small world networks is typically associated with regular networks such as a 2D square lattice. The small world phenomenon can be observed in most scale free networks, but few small world networks are scale free. The article first provides a brief background on small world networks and two models of scale free graphs before describing the replica method and how it can be applied to calculate the spectral densities of the adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix of a scale free network. It then shows how the effective medium approximation can be used to treat networks with finite mean degree and concludes with a discussion of the local properties of random matrices associated with complex networks.

Full text
Abstract:
Background matching is perhaps the most obvious phenomenon that falls under the label of crypsis. Stevens & Merilaita (2011) describe background matching as situations where ‘the appearance generally matches the colour, lightness and pattern of one (specialized) or several (compromise) background types’. There are fascinating examples of species that behaviourally select their microhabitat and orientation so as to enhance similarity to features of the background, and species that change aspects of their appearance in ways that enhance background matching. The degree of background matching is often imperfect; this is thought to commonly reflect the fact that organisms are viewed against a range of different backgrounds, and so they have evolved appearance traits that offer some degree of matching against several of these. Understanding background matching addresses important issues in evolutionary biology, such as the maintenance of polymorphisms. We discuss how predation rates that depend on the frequency of morphs in the environment may be a common explanation for polymorphic crypsis, and the role search images might play in this process. Achieving highly effective background matching in a complex environment is difficult and this may create room for other types of crypsis.

Abstract:
The first part of this chapter examines the research literature in two important areas: the reasons behind the rise in complex teams in qualitative research, and concurrently, the significant discussions emerging about writing among qualitative researchers. As the reader will discover, these two issues are linked in significant ways. The second part of the chapter provides a foundational discussion on qualitative research (definitions, principles, and forms of data) that will anchor the novice reader and provide important background for the expert reader. This text takes a problem-based approach to qualitative research, which is carefully described in this section. This chapter is supported with extensive bibliographic resources that will prove useful for readers who want to do further exploration of their own.

Abstract:
Most qualitative research methodology texts are addressed to individual researchers working alone, whereas the majority of qualitative research today is probably conducted by complex teams. Team-based researchers recognize the work they are doing is complicated, difficult, and differs significantly from the single researcher working on a single project, but they have lacked information on how standard practices of the field are translated into group practice, particularly in the realm of writing, which is central to all qualitative research work. Bucking that trend, this text addresses the unique methodological needs of researchers who are conducting qualitative research as part of a complex team. This book is anchored in the belief that writing on team-based qualitative research has strong overlap with, and at the same time, vast differences from the writing that is produced by the single researcher working alone. The text provides background on the reasons behind the rise in complex team research and the ways qualitative researchers have attended to this change in context. There is detailed discussion of team basics, including: team formation, research design and project organization, and important ethical issues. The issues of both methodological and substantive writing are taken up in separate chapters. The book concludes with consideration of future trends and recommendations. Written with the detailed explanations that experienced qualitative researchers will be seeking, this text also covers important basics for those new to qualitative research, making it useful for both expert and novice.

Holdt, Lesca M., and Daniel Teupser. Genetic background of atherosclerosis and its risk factors. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199656653.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is concerned with how atherosclerosis risk is modulated by a complex interplay between genetic and environmental risk factors. The contribution of genetics to the variability of atherosclerosis risk is estimated as 50%. Recent genome-wide association studies have led to the identification of over 50 gene variants which modulate atherogenesis. Risk factors for atherosclerosis are also partly genetically determined and some of the variants which play a role in atherogenesis overlap with those modulating its risk factors. However, the current relevance of these findings for clinical practice is limited, mainly due to the small effect sizes of identified risk variants with insufficient discriminatory power, and a large portion of the genetic contribution to atherosclerosis is still unknown. The major promise therefore lies in understanding the pathophysiology of newly identified genes with the perspective of novel therapeutic approaches.

Full text
Abstract:
This book introduces the theory of complex surfaces through a comprehensive look at finite covers of the projective plane branched along line arrangements. It emphasizes those finite coverings that are free quotients of the complex 2-ball. The book also includes a background on the classical Gauss hypergeometric function of one variable, and a chapter on the Appell two-variable F1 hypergeometric function. The book began as a set of lecture notes, taken by the author, of a course given by Friedrich Hirzebruch at ETH Zürich in 1996. The lecture notes were then considerably expanded over a number of years. In this book, the author has expanded those notes even further, still stressing examples offered by finite covers of line arrangements. The book is largely self-contained and foundational material is introduced and explained as needed, but not treated in full detail. References to omitted material are provided for interested readers. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this is an accessible account of a highly informative area of complex geometry.

Abstract:
Today’s legal practitioners who deal with cross-border disputes in civil and commercial matters work in an increasingly complex transnational legal environment. This book provides up-to-date background, explanations, and practical guidance on how to deal with the most important challenges and recent developments in the field, including choice of forum, choice of law, service of process, proof of foreign law, taking of evidence, and enforcement of judgments. A major focus is on the mechanisms for international judicial assistance, in particular those provided by regional and international arrangements such as the Hague Conventions on service, evidence, Apostilles, choice-of-court agreements and the enforcement of judgments, as well as the regional arrangements within the OAS and the EU. The book builds on Bruno Ristau’s classic multi-volume work International Judicial Assistance, updating its discussions of service of process and the taking of evidence, supplementing comparative background material, and adding several chapters to cover a more complete span of litigation topics and provide the practical guidance today’s practitioners need to navigate the field of international civil litigation.

Abstract:
This chapter provides the relevant background on the network dynamics of complex networks formed by just one layer (single networks). Emergent properties of network dynamics are characterized using the framework of phase transitions. The major results on robustness of complex networks, percolation theory and epidemic spreading are presented, revealing the rich interplay between network structure and function. In this context particular emphasis is given to the implications of the scale-free network topology on these dynamical processes. Diffusion processes and synchronization and controllability are characterized on networks, revealing the relevance of spectral properties and peripheral nodes for determining their dynamical behaviour.

Abstract:
Traumatic or adverse experiences are pervasive among school-aged children and youth. These experiences undermine students’ ability to learn, form relationships, and manage their feelings and behavior. Meanwhile, educators and school-based professionals often remain unaware of the complex needs of their students or how to meet them within the hours of the typical school day, all while possibly dealing with their own stressors. Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students: A Guide for School-Based Professionals provides a practically oriented tool for understanding and assisting students with a history of trauma. Designed specifically for professionals in mental health and education settings, this volume combines content and expertise from practitioners, researchers, and other experts with backgrounds in education, school psychology, school social work, school administration, resilience, school policy, and trauma. The book provides a thorough background on current research in trauma and its impact on school functioning; administrative and policy considerations; and a broad set of practical and implementable strategies and resources for adapting and differentiating instruction, modifying the classroom and school environments, and building competency for students and staff impacted by trauma. Rather than provide complex treatment protocols, the chapters in this book offer simple techniques and strategies designed for all types of educational environments within the context of multiple potential sources of trauma. Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students is an essential resource for classroom teachers, administrators, and school-based professionals, as well as courses that address crisis, trauma, and education across a broad spectrum of specializations.

Brody, David L. Concussion Care Manual. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190054793.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This practical manual is for clinicians who care for patients with concussions. The effects of concussions are a recognized problem in the medical community and among the general public. Most people recover well from concussions, but a substantial minority does not. Most clinicians, however, do not have specific training in how to evaluate and treat concussion patients who do not make a rapid and complete recovery. This manual is based on the experience of the former director of the concussion clinic at Washington University in St. Louis, currently the director of the NIH/Uniformed Service University Traumatic Brain Injury Research Group. The manual provides step-by-step guidance for managing problems related to complex concussions: diagnosis, treatment strategies, headaches, sleep disruption, attention deficit, mood instability, anxiety and depression, post-traumatic stress, personality change, balance problems, dizziness, fatigue, and so forth. Specific sections address returning to work, driving, school, and contact sports. The manual also specifically addresses concussion in adolescents, children, elderly individuals, contact-sport athletes, military personnel, and patients involved in medico-legal matters. Finally, the manual discusses how to set up and run a concussion clinic. Clinicians with a broad range of backgrounds, including primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, athletic trainers, emergency medicine doctors, neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, and rehabilitation medicine physicians should be able to use the manual effectively. Resident physicians and other trainees can use the manual without extensive background reading. Lists of Internet-based resources and other available publications direct the reader to information beyond what a pocket-sized manual can provide.

Abstract:
Probability theory forms a natural framework for explaining the impressive success of people at solving many difficult inductive problems, such as learning words and categories, inferring the relevant features of objects, and identifying functional relationships. Probabilistic models of cognition use Bayes’s rule to identify probable structures or representations that could have generated a set of observations, whether the observations are sensory input or the output of other psychological processes. In this chapter we address an important question that arises within this framework: How do people infer representations that are complex enough to faithfully encode the world but not so complex that they “overfit” noise in the data? We discuss nonparametric Bayesian models as a potential answer to this question. To do so, first we present the mathematical background necessary to understand nonparametric Bayesian models. We then delve into nonparametric Bayesian models for three types of hidden structure: clusters, features, and functions. Finally, we conclude with a summary and discussion of open questions for future research.

Dealing with client assets was an extremely complex and critical aspect of the entire administration in Europe and raised fundamental issues for the operation of the financial markets and the courts. In order to appreciate the scale and complexity of the issues involved it is necessary to put this aspect of the administration into both a factual and legal context. The chapter asks: why did LBIE, the main hub company for Lehman business in Europe, hold client assets? The chapter relates this to English trust law and trust law principles.

This chapter focuses on the legacy of John Brunner. A wave of memorials followed in the wake of his sudden death. His novel Stand on Zanzibar was classed as his greatest achievement and, along with The Jagged Orbit, The Sheep Look Up, and The Shockwave Rider, were portrayed as the foundation of his reputation. However, speculation about when and why his career faltered was rife. Attention was also focused on his complex personality, relegating important aspects of his literary legacy to the background. Perhaps this outcome was inevitable, given Brunner's lack of commercial success and reputation as a crusty defeatist toward the end of his career.

Abstract:
The Hittite ritual for the Ancient Gods (CTH 446) is one of the most interesting and complex in the Hittite ritual corpus. It describes a series of ritual procedures and recitations to be performed over two days with the goal of cleansing a house contaminated by impurity resulting from bloodshed. Summoned for the task are the Ancient Gods, Netherworld deities of the Hurrian-Hittite tradition. The present study provides an updated critical edition of this remarkable ritual, which is complemented with philological notes and commentary. Additionally, the volume investigates the nature and origins of the composition against the broader background of the Hittite ritual corpus.

Against a Dark Background presented an extreme capitalism that was a deliberate contrast to the communist character of the Culture; while Feersum Endjinn presented a structurally complex and linguistically dense account of a world in collapse. Civil war as a political manifestation of Laing’s divided self would also inform subsequent works of the Scottish fantastic, notably Whit and A Song of Stone. One avenue for improving access to quality mental health care for children, adolescents, and their families is to provide services in the communities where they live. There has been growing support for the implementation of evidence-based practice in community mental health settings to address the complex needs of diverse young clients. Evidence-based practice encompasses psychometrically sound assessments and empirically supported treatments with appreciation of the culture of communities in which they are provided. This chapter reviews the background of the community mental health movement, describes community mental health settings and the current status of youth evidence-based practices in community care contexts, and explores barriers to and prospects for bringing tested practices for youths into community-based care.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Archaeological Ceramic Analysis draws together topics and methodologies essential for the socio-cultural, mineralogical, and geochemical analysis of archaeological ceramic. Ceramic is one of the most complex and ubiquitous archaeomaterials in the archaeological record: it occurs around the world and through time in almost every culture and context, from building materials and technological installations to utilitarian wares and votive figurines. For more than 100 years, archaeologists have used ceramic analysis to answer complex questions about economy, subsistence, technological innovation, social organization, and dating. The volume is structured around the themes “Research design and data analysis,” “Foundational concepts,” “Evaluating ceramic provenance,” “Investigating ceramic manufacture,” “Assessing vessel function,” and “Dating ceramic assemblages.” It provides a common vocabulary and offers practical tools and guidelines for ceramic analysis using techniques and methodologies ranging from network analysis and typology to rehydroxylation dating and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Each chapter provides the theoretical background and practical guidelines, such as cost and destructiveness of analysis, for each technique, as well as detailed case studies illustrating the application and interpretation of analytical data for answering anthropological questions.

Hinterhölzl, Roland, and Svetlana Petrova. Prosodic and information-structural factors in word order variation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198813545.003.0014.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes an analysis that derives the word order variation in dependent clauses in OHG within a universal VO base order, plus additional cyclic leftward movement operations that target different information-structural projections in the complex left periphery of the clause. More precisely, it is argued that categories conveying contrastive information land in [Spec,FocP], with the finite verb targeting Foc° and marking the left edge of the new-information focus domain, while background information is placed further left, between ForceP and FocP. This positional realization of the verb and phrases expressing different semantic types of focus is considered a special strategy of disambiguating broad from narrow focus, as well as of avoiding the clash of two focus phrases in the middle field of clauses with multiple foci.

Eveland, William P., and R. Kelly Garrett. Communication Modalities and Political Knowledge. Edited by Kate Kenski and Kathleen Hall Jamieson. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199793471.013.018.

Abstract:
Recent research has made clear that the process by which individuals obtain information about politics through the media and other communication sources is complex and multifaceted. The effects of communication on knowledge can vary by medium or the mix of sources that individuals choose, by the motivations and background characteristics of the user, and by the type of knowledge being considered. Whether “knowledge” (as opposed to misperceptions or simply beliefs) is the end result of communication depends crucially on the nature of the information being presented and the prior beliefs of the user. The authors review the state of the art research in this domain and offer suggestions for how scholarship must adjust to the changing environment brought about by technological change and increasing partisanship and polarization among politicians, the media, and the public.

Rauen, Margarida Gandara, and Alfredo Michel Modenessi. Shakespearean Tragedy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Edited by Michael Neill and David Schalkwyk. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198724193.013.52.

Abstract:
The authors of this essay address a post-colonial concern with place and displacement as they provide historical and theoretical background, and review works by critics, creative writers and artists who have variously interpreted, staged, and appropriated Shakespeare’s tragedies in Latin America and the Caribbean. They argue that political statements are always at the core of such work, whether it reflects a purist and universalist perspective, or a radical stance that accentuates diversity issues. The region encompasses numerous cultural differences between the many larger and smaller territories of Spanish-speaking countries, and the vastness of Portuguese-speaking Brazil. As a result, the works that emerge from such complex geo-political borders reflect the ambivalence of frontier zones, while revealing a continued division between cultural dependence and the deliberate transgressive treatment of European material.

Abstract:
The cases in this volume have been selected to show the spectrum of acute medicine in older patients. These are often with atypical or non-specific presentations, on a background of complex co-morbidity and the attendant management and ethical dilemmas. The format follows that of other books in the series: case descriptions with questions followed by answers including detailed discussion of the diagnosis, treatment, and management dilemmas including ethical and holistic aspects of care. This structure was chosen as it is very difficult to illustrate the practical process of clinical management through a conventional textbook format. The authors believe it is more interesting and educational to consider real cases and one’s own management plan, than to read a text that does not require the same interactive effort on the part of the reader.

Sarah, Nouwen. Part III Regimes and Doctrines, Ch.36 International Criminal Law: Theory All Over the Place. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198701958.003.0037.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the different theories employed in the field of international criminal law, which is now increasingly supported by theory. Case theories were developed after events had taken place; operational theories were produced to match complex facts; foundational theories were created to justify existing practices; external theories tried to make sense of the phenomenon of international criminal law as it had been observed; and so did the popular theories based on everyday encounters. Ago, rather than cogito, ergo sum was the field’s implicit maxim. Against this background one still finds that factual, operational, foundational, external theories prove to be less coherent when they are considered in light of each other. Rich theories could thus emerge from more joint theorizing among those working on variably factual, operational, foundational, and external theories, between scholars and practitioners, and between scholar-theorists and quotidian theorists.

Abstract:
This chapter briefly summarizes the book and its implications for interpreters of the New Testament. The book has argued that conventional virtues like modesty, industry, and loyalty did not negate women’s capacities to own property and act as patrons. Social norms were multiple and complex, and could be applied in different ways depending on the circumstances. Thus, social practices of the period made room for women to exert influence and become leaders and officeholders in their communities. A “modest” woman might be an acknowledged and widely sought leader of her city. This understanding of the cultural context may yield new interpretations of familiar New Testament material. The historical background does not force one single interpretation of any text; readers still face many exegetical decisions. However, the chapter identifies some of the broad implications of the study for New Testament interpretation.
