Abstract:
This study examines the dynamic interplay between platform providers and complementors in the context of digital ecosystems, focusing on the complementary factors of affordance, autonomy, and super-modularity. Using national survey data from the Korean digital industry, the study applied multivariate ordered probit and k-mode clustering models to analyze what determines these factors and how these factors are interrelated from the perspective of platform providers and complementors, respectively. The results indicate that platform providers with open APIs promote affordance, but providing an SDK inhibits affordance. In terms of complementors, choosing a platform providing APIs increases super-modularity. And affordance increases when using the platform for logistics and new product development. In addition, we found that affordance and autonomy have a trade-off relationship from the perspective of both platform providers and complementors. Finally, we classified platforms and complementors into subgroups with respect to affordance, autonomy, and super-modularity using cluster analysis and found that the size of a complementor’s firm, such as revenue and number of employees, influences which platform it chooses. Conversely, the size of a platform provider also influences how much autonomy and collaboration it offers. This study contributes to the understanding of digital platform ecosystems and provides insights for practitioners on how to leverage platform dynamics to enhance competitive advantage.

Abstract:
This study takes a review and theory development (RTD) approach to synthesizing the software platform literature, offering theoretical perspective and research guidance. In doing so, we conceptualize platform and complementary capabilities for software platform owners and complementors. The review indicates that three dimensions reflect platform capabilities: intermediarity, generativity, and ambidexterity, while complementary capabilities include creativity, interconnectivity, and appropriability dimensions. We derive an integrative framework of software platforms, which explains (1) how software platform owners and complementors improve performance by enhancing their capabilities, and (2) how software platform owners, complementors, and the ecosystem environment coevolve. We then discuss how future research can build on and enrich the research framework

Abstract:
Research on platform owners’ entry into complementary markets points in divergent directions. One strand of the literature reports a squeeze on post-entry complementor profits due to increased competition, while another observes positive effects as increased customer attention and innovation benefit the complementary market as a whole. In this research note, we seek to transcend these conflicting views by comparing the effects of the early and late timing of platform owners’ entry. We apply a difference-in-differences design to explore the drivers and effects of the timing of platform owners’ entry using data from three entries that Amazon made into its Alexa voice assistant’s complementary markets. Our findings suggest that early entry is driven by the motivation to boost the overall value creation of the complementary market, whereas late entry is driven by the motivation to capture value already created in a key complementary market. Importantly, our findings suggest that early entry, in contrast to late entry, creates substantial consumer attention that benefits complementors offering specialized functionality. In addition, the findings also suggest that complementors with more experience are more likely to benefit from the increased consumer attention. We contribute to platform research by showing that the timing of the platform owner’s entry matters in a way that can potentially reconcile conflicting findings regarding the consequences of platform owners’ entry into complementary markets.

Next-generation technology provides users with new, advanced functionality that often renders the past technology obsolete, opening a window of opportunity for challengers. Major benefits can accrue to technology leaders, but for platform technologies that require complementary innovation from external complementors to create value for users, those benefits are limited by the difficulty of securing complements. The focus of this article is on the value users derive from the variety and quality of platform complements and its impact on leaders’ performance over time relative to followers. The article shows that next-generation platform leaders that build in-house complements and encourage broader participation by external complementors can enhance platform value to users at early market stages. Yet, later on, when the market has taken off, continuing to leverage these strategies will negatively affect the variety and quality of their complements, constraining their growth capacity and performance relative to followers. Leaders may thus lock themselves into suboptimal performance patterns and eventually fall behind their followers. The analysis provided herein offers new insights about what drives platform competition by highlighting the challenges platform leaders face, particularly in the growth stage of a platform’s market evolution, and the critical role played by complement quality in shaping platform competition over time.

Abstract:
We expand the perspective on disruption by going beyond substitute products to consider the ways in which complements can impact the competitiveness of incumbents. Complementors represent a different kind of disruptive threat, one that is latent within the initial structure of value creation: complementors that disrupt are not new entrants but, rather, established actors that can shift their impact from positive to negative. With this perspective, we consider how ecosystem dynamics can clarify aspects of disruptive competition, and we use the dynamics of disruption to illuminate dimensions of competition in ecosystem settings. We elaborate three processes through which disruption through complements can occur: commoditization, adjacent entry, and value inversion. For each process we discuss specific examples, and we illustrate their interaction in the context of the automotive industry, which is fast evolving in response to technological change. In so doing, the paper fills a critical gap in the literature, which is so far missing a systematic examination of how complementors can disrupt established firms.

Abstract:
In many industries, multiple independent complementors supply the individual components of a system. In this paper, we develop a formal model to examine the tensions and tradeoffs that result when a firm—either one of the complementors or a de novo entrant—takes competition to the system level by launching an integrated offering that combines the multiple components. A complementor who takes competition to the system level becomes a competitor to itself at the system level. As a consequence, the task of maintaining the competitiveness of the multiple-component system rests on the shoulders of the remaining complementor. We show that this allows the integrator to earn additional profits at the expense of the complementor—that is, it can raise the price of its component and thereby squeeze the margin of its complementor. We find that this squeezing effect can be so strong that offering an integrated system is profitable even if the system itself is unprofitable. Interestingly, when analyzing the possibility of entry by a de novo integrator who does not suffer from self-cannibalization, we show that an incumbent complementor may nevertheless have stronger incentives to launch an integrated offering. This is because the incumbent's ability to benefit from squeezing its complementor and earn additional profits on cannibalized sales leads to an entrant's disadvantage when taking competition to the system level. We also discuss defense strategies for complementors to shield themselves against the consequences of integration by their complementor. This paper was accepted by Joshua Gans, business strategy.

This paper is to prove empirically that the cooperative business structure and conflict control capability of a platform leader and that the complementarity of a platform will have positive impacts on whether complementors select specific platforms in 245 platform selection examples of 99 application developers. Past research has not been sufficient regarding platform selection, but has been similar to other research on ERP platforms. Therefore, it is very meaningful to make an empirical study on the platform selection of complementors, which has not yet been performed. As a result, it is important for platform leaders to establish their own cooperative business structures and secure the complementarity of their platforms. Therefore, platform leaders should create more transaction opportunities by helping complementors to develop more complements and making business ecosystems grow more and more.

The generation of platform content is essential for platform growth and competition. However, the overwhelming number of platform complementors makes it impossible for platform operators to engage in extensive communication with each complementor about which content contributions are desired. Therefore, platform operators need to find a way to signal strategic interests to platform complementors. In this paper, we employ a mixed-methods design using data from the geodata platform OpenStreetMap to develop and test two distinct types of platform signals as a means of implementing a platform operator’s strategy: (1) opportunity signals, which aim to stimulate activity in new areas of the platform, and (2) endorsement signals, which aim to increase activity in existing areas of the platform. In particular, we examine how platform signals influence the generation of platform content in terms of the volume and diversity of information on the platform. We contribute important insights to the platform governance literature by developing and empirically testing a signaling perspective on the generation of platform content and discussing its implications for guiding platform complementors in content creation.

Technological platforms such as hardware or systems form platform ecosystems, which are communities orchestrated by platform providers, outside complementors such as software providers, and consumers. Previous studies have suggested that a winner-takes-all situation among platform ecosystems could be induced by interactions between complementors and consumers. However, our observation of the Japanese video game market over the last 30 years indicated that complementors (i.e., software providers) usually seek to avoid winner-takes-all situations and, instead, promote symbiotic situations. Using the Lotka–Volterra equations from biology as a reference, we developed a model to understand the competitive behavior of complementors among platform ecosystems. We used a 19-year (1996–2015) dataset on the Japanese video game market and confirmed that complementors took as many actions to create symbiotic situations as they took to create winner-takes-all situations, if not more. Our results show that such actions by complementors are influenced by several factors of platform ecosystems. This study also suggests that certain complementors that contribute to symbiotic co-existence within a platform ecosystem could emerge as keystone firms/companies. These complementors could contribute to the sustainability of platform-based markets and facilitate the co-existence of multiple platform ecosystems.

In the context of platforms, an open architecture is instrumental in enabling innovation by complementors. But as complementors increasingly deplete the innovation opportunities that the platform architecture affords, the platform architecture must evolve to reinvigorate the platform’s generative capacity. This article underscores the role of complementors in the process of platform architecture evolution by introducing the notion of architectural generativity. Architectural generativity involves actively soliciting and selectively incorporating contributions from complementors to help evolve the platform in unforeseen ways. In the case of the Mozilla Firefox web browser platform, complementors contributed new ways to facilitate access to the platform’s technological components and suggested better ways to control the platform and its architecture.

Ma thèse examine le rôle des plateformes numériques en tant que régulateurs privés. Cette thèse évalue comment et pourquoi les plateformes choisissent les règles à créer et à appliquer, ainsi que l'impact de ces choix sur les plateformes et leurs parties prenantes telles que les individus, les entreprises, la société civile et les régulateurs. Le premier essai développe un cadre théorique qui explore les différents aspects de l’élaboration de règles par les plateformes en se concentrant sur l’interdépendance des organisations de mouvements sociaux vis-à-vis des plateformes de partage de contenu numérique. Le deuxième essai étudie comment la mise en oeuvre par une plateforme d’une réglementation publique impacte la conformité et l’adaptation de ses compléments en employant une conception de différence spatiale dans le marché de l’hébergement touristique de courte durée à Paris. Le troisième essai explore l’impact du choix de gouvernance d’une plateforme sur la professionnalisation des complémenteurs dans le même contexte empirique. Au total, ma thèse apporte trois contributions à la recherche sur les plateformes. Premièrement, j’étends la littérature sur les plateformes en adoptant une vision intégrée des stratégies marchandes et non marchandes des plateformes. Deuxièmement, en évaluant le rôle des plateformes numériques en tant que régulateurs privés, je contribue à la littérature plus large sur la façon dont ces entreprises façonnent l’environnement non marchand de leurs parties prenantes en tant qu’individus, entreprises, organisations de mouvements sociaux et régulateurs. Troisièmement, je fournis des preuves de la manière dont les complémenteurs peuvent s’adapter stratégiquement et ainsi limiter l’influence de la régulation privée des plateformes
My thesis examines the role of digital platforms as private regulators. This thesis evaluates how and why platforms choose which rules to create and enforce and the impact of these choices on platforms and their stakeholders such as individuals, firms, civil society, and regulators. The first essay develops a theoretical framework that explores the different aspects of platforms’ rule-making focusing on the interdependence of social movement organizations on digital contentsharing platforms. The second essay investigates how a platform’s implementation of a public regulation impacts its complementors’ compliance and adaptation by employing a spatial difference-in-difference design in the Paris short-term tourism rental accommodation market. The third essay explores how a platform’s governance choice impacts the professionalization of complementors in the same empirical context. Overall, my thesis makes three contributions to research on platforms. First, I extend the literature on platforms by taking an integrated view of platforms’ market and non-market strategies. Second, by evaluating the role of digital platforms as private regulators, I contribute to the broader literature on how these firms shape the non-market environment of their stakeholders as individuals, firms, social movement organizations, and regulators. Third, I provide evidence for how complementors may strategically adapt and thus limit the influence of platforms’ private regulation

Abstract:
A alimentação da criança no primeiro ano de vida é essencial para o crescimento e desenvolvimento adequados. A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) recomenda que o aleitamento materno seja exclusivo até os seis meses de vida e que os alimentos complementares sejam introduzidos a partir desta idade. Os objetivos desta pesquisa foram estimar a prevalência do aleitamento materno em crianças menores de 1 ano de idade e descrever a alimentação complementar entre as crianças estudadas. O estudo transversal, descritivo abrangeu 821 crianças menores de um ano de idade vacinadas na Segunda Etapa da Campanha Nacional de Vacinação nos Postos de Saúde da cidade de Guarapuava-PR. A coleta dos dados foi realizada com as mães e/ou responsáveis por crianças menores de 1 ano de idade que compareceram aos Postos de Saúde naquela data. O instrumento utilizado nesta pesquisa foi o questionário elaborado e validado pelo Instituto de Saúde da Secretaria Estadual de Saúde de São Paulo-SP e parcerias. A análise dos dados deu-se através da análise das freqüências simples de todas as variáveis coletadas. Com relação aos indicadores de aleitamento materno, 68,9% das crianças estavam em aleitamento materno, sendo 86,2% e 39,8% entre crianças menores de 4 e 6 meses, respectivamente. Considerando os indicadores de aleitamento materno exclusivo e predominante, verificou-se que entre as crianças menores de 4 meses foi de 46,4% e 41,4%, respectivamente. Para as crianças menores de 6 meses, verificou-se os seguintes percentuais: 37,3% e 18,9%, respectivamente. Entre as crianças menores de quatro e seis meses, 31,9% e 45,3% estavam recebendo outro tipo de leite que não o humano. Entre as crianças menores ou iguais a 4 meses, 5,1% estavam em alimentação complementar, e entre as menores ou iguais a 6 meses 14% , recebendo chá, água, suco, fruta, sopa de legumes e comida de panela nas últimas 24 horas. Este estudo mostrou que os indicadores de Aleitamento Materno – Aleitamento Materno e Aleitamento Materno Exclusivo estão muito aquém do preconizado pela OMS e que a introdução da alimentação complementar é precoce tanto entre crianças amamentadas como em crianças não amamentadas.
What children eat in the first year of life is essential with a view to adequate growth and development. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to six months of age and that complementary foods be introduced from that age onwards. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of breastfeeding among children under 1 year old, as well as to describe the introduction of complementary foods among the children in this study. A cross-sectional and descriptive study was realized among 821 infants under 1 year old who were vaccinated in the Second Phase of the National Vaccination Campaign at Health Centers in Guarapuava-PR, Brazil. Data collection involved the mothers and/or responsibles for infants under 1 year old who came to the Health Centers on that day, using the questionnaire elaborated and validated by the Health Institute of the São Paulo State Health Secretary and its partners. The collected data were subject to simple frequency analysis of all variables. As to breastfeeding indicators, 68.9% of the infants received breastfeeding, with 86.2% and 39.8% of children under 4 and 6 months, respectively. Exclusive and predominant breastfeeding indicators corresponded to 46.4% and 41.4%, respectively, among children under 4 months old, against 37.3% and 18.9% for children under 6 months of age. 31.9% and 45.3% of children under 4 and 6 months old were receiving nonhuman milk. 5.1% of children aged 4 months or older and 14% of those aged 6 months or older received complementary feeding, having consumed tea, water, juice, fruit, vegetable soup and homemade food during the last 24 hours. This study has shown that Breastfeeding – Breastfeeding and Exclusive Breastfeeding indicators remain much below the levels set by the WHO and that complementary foods are introduced at an early stage for children who are breastfed or not.

Resumo: Devido ao aumento crescente da utilização das Medicinas Alternativas e Complementares (MAC) há a necessidade de que os profissionais de saúde estejam aptos a informar e atender seus pacientes, reconhecer efeitos colaterais, interações medicamentosas e praticar as medicinas complementares isoladas ou associadas às medicinas convencionais com segurança. Neste trabalho foi feita uma Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL) sobre o ensino das MAC em escolas médicas, com a finalidade de refletir sobre as evidências publicadas. Foram analisados 33 artigos indexados no banco eletrônico de dados Pubmed utilizando o descritor: ¿complementary and alternative medicine teaching¿. Identificou-se vários exemplos de inserção das MAC no ensino e, de modo geral, os estudantes de medicina têm atitudes positivas frente às MAC, desejam aprendê-las tendo com o objetivo tratar e orientar seus futuros pacientes com essas medicinas. O ensino das MAC nas escolas de medicina tem, como fundamento, adicionar à prática médica ferramentas diagnósticas e terapêuticas a serem utilizadas em atenção, prevenção e promoção a saúde nos diversos níveis de complexidade do sistema de saúde
Abstract: Due to the continuous increase in the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) there is the need to health professionals to be able to inform and attend their patients, recognize adverse effects, drugs interactions and to practice complementary medicines isolated or associated with conventional medicine safely. In this study, a Literature Systematic Review was made concerning the teaching of CAM in medical schools with the interest of reflecting upon the published evidences. 33 articles indexed in the electronic database Pubmed using the key-words ¿complementary and alternative medicine teaching¿ were analyzed several examples of CAM teaching, in section were identified and in general, medical students have positive attitudes toward CAM, want to learn them, having as aim treat and orient their future patients with this medicines. CAM teaching in medical school have, as basis, add to medical practices therapeutic and diagnosis tools to be used in health care, prevention and health promotion in the diverse complexity levels of the health system

Abstract:
A busca por saúde e bem-estar é intrínseca ao ser humano. Além da medicina convencional ou alopática, existem numerosas modalidades terapêuticas consideradas parte da Medicina Complementar e Alternativa (MCA). No Brasil, essas terapias foram chamadas Práticas Integrativas e Complementares (PIC), definidas pela Portaria nº 971, de 3 de maio de 2006 do Ministério da Saúde. Embora sejam amplamente utilizadas com apoio da Organização Mundial da Saúde, faltam materiais de suporte aos tradutores sobre esse tema. Dessa forma, procuramos desenvolver um glossário bilíngue português brasileiro/inglês britânico dessa área de especialidade, por meio da compilação de corpora comparáveis nos dois idiomas, escolhendo textos representativos sobre essa temática. Para a realização desse trabalho, utilizamos como referenciais teóricos a Linguística de Corpus e a Terminologia Bilíngue. Como ferramenta computacional usamos o WordSmith Tools. Após a compilação dos corpora, utilizando artigos acadêmicos, livros, textos de sites institucionais e legislação, examinamos a linguagem utilizada na área de PIC e extraímos os termos pertinentes à pesquisa por meio de uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa. Verificamos a ocorrência de termos simples, compostos, complexos e siglas. Em seguida, buscamos os equivalentes em língua inglesa para os termos selecionados. Nem todos os equivalentes foram encontrados no corpus em inglês, portanto, realizamos nova busca usando a web como corpus. Explicitamos a macroestrutura e a microestrutura propostas e apresentamos a primeira versão do glossário, com exemplos de contextos de uso autêntico em ambos os idiomas. Propusemo-nos também a buscar os equivalentes em inglês para uma terapia desenvolvida no Brasil cuja terminologia ainda não tivesse sido vertida para o inglês. Foi escolhida a terapia floral baseada na alquimia, da qual elaboramos um corpus, extraímos os termos mais representativos e buscamos os equivalentes em inglês por meio de pesquisas pontuais. Elaboramos um glossário ilustrado de plantas utilizadas na produção das essências florais utilizadas nessa terapia. Esperamos contribuir com um material de apoio inicial aos tradutores da área de PIC, além de incentivar o desenvolvimento de novas pesquisas sobre essa lingua de especialidade.
The search for health and well-being is intrinsic to the human being. In addition to conventional or allopathic medicine, there are numerous therapeutic modalities considered part of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). In Brazil, these therapies are called Complementary and Integrative Practices (CIP), defined by Ministry of Health Ordinance No. 971 of May 3, 2006. Although widely used with support from the World Health Organization, there is a lack of reference terminological materials for translators on this topic. Thus, we seek to develop a Brazilian Portuguese/British English bilingual glossary of this area of expertise, by compiling comparable corpora in both languages, choosing representative texts on this topic. In order to carry out this work, we used as theoretical references Corpus Linguistics and Bilingual Terminology. As a computational tool we used WordSmith Tools. After the compilation of corpora, using academic articles, books, texts of institutional websites and legislation, we examined the language used in the area of CIP and extracted the related terms to the research through a quantitative and qualitative analysis. We verified the occurrence of simple terms, compound terms, complex terms and acronyms. Next, we searched for English equivalents of the selected terms. Not all of the equivalents were found in the English corpus, so we performed a new search using the web as a corpus. Then, we explained the proposed macrostructure and microstructure and presented the first version of the glossary, with examples of contexts of authentic use in both languages. We also proposed to seek equivalents in English for a therapy developed in Brazil whose terminology had not yet been translated into English. Alchemy based flower essences therapy was chosen, from which we developed a corpus, extracted the most representative terms and searched for equivalents in English through a one-on-one research. We developed an illustrated glossary of plants used in the production of the flower essences used in this therapy. We hope to contribute an initial reference material to translators in the area of CIP, as well as encouraging the development of new research on this specialized language.

No período do climatério, cerca de 80% das mulheres são acometidas pelas consequências do hipoestrogenismo: alterações fisiológicas, psicológicas, ondas de calor, nictúria, alterações de humor. Essas modificações contribuem para o aumento da prevalência de insônia nessa fase, que atinge cerca de 28% a 63% das mulheres pós-menopausadas. A presença de tais sintomas associados a condições sócio-culturais, como a aposentadoria, a valorização da juventude, o envelhecimento, refletem diretamente na qualidade de vida dessa população. Como a terapia hormonal tem sua indicação individualizada e não indicada em alguns casos, a procura por terapias coadjuvantes ou substitutivas é crescente, incluindo a massagem terapêutica, que pode aliviar os sintomas da insônia no período climatérico. O presente estudo é apresentado em dois trabalhos. O primeiro, um estudo piloto com sete voluntárias, que avaliou o efeito da massagem terapêutica em mulheres pós-menopausadas com insônia e apresentou melhora objetiva e subjetiva no sono. Os resultados deste estudo nos levaram à elaboração do segundo trabalho, randomizado e controlado. O trabalho 2 avaliou quarenta e quatro mulheres distribuídas em 3 grupos, controle, movimento passivo e massagem terapêutica. Os resultados dos questionários mostraram melhora no sono, nos sintomas climatéricos e na qualidade de vida.
In the climacteric period, approximately 80% of women are affected by consequences of hypoestrogenism: physiological and psychological alterations, hot flashes, nycturia, mood alterations. These changes contribute to the increase of insomnia prevalence in this phase, which affects approximately 28% to 63% of postmenopausal women. The presence of such symptoms associated with socio-cultural conditions, such as retirement, appreciation of youth, aging, reflect directly on quality of life of this population. As hormone therapy is indicated in certain cases and is not indicated for some patients, there has been an increase in the demand for complementary or alternative therapies, including therapeutic massage, which may relieve insomnia symptoms in the climacteric period. The present study is presented in two studies. The first one, a pilot study with seven individuals, evaluated the effects of therapeutic massage on post-menopausal insomniac women and demonstrated subjective and objective sleep improvement. The results of this study led us to conduct a second one, now a randomized and controlled trial, including 44 women, distributed into 3 groups (control, passive movement and therapeutic massage). The results of the questionnaires demonstrated improvement in sleep, climacteric symptoms and quality of life.

Os movimentos contraculturais, desencadeados principalmente nos anos de 1960/70, ao questionarem a sociedade tecnocrata-capitalista e incentivarem uma maior politização da vida social, possibilitaram ampliação da abertura para debates e tensões que afetaram as instituições sociais vigentes, contestando paradigmas consagrados. Tal fato permitiu uma (re)valorização e, até mesmo, reapropriação (ou criação) de perspectivas holísticas em relação ao corpo e à saúde, e a inclusão de outras dimensões explicativas, além das oferecidas pela racionalidade biomédica. Com a maior aceitação das práticas alternativas ou complementares, abriu-se espaço para a retomada de antigos métodos de cura através das mãos, entre elas, as que não necessitam de toque direto entre \"curador\" e paciente, como reiki e o johrei da Igreja Messiânica Mundial. Este estudo teve como objetivo apreender e interpretar os significados de reiki e johrei, considerando os arcabouços técnicos e conceituais sobre os quais estão alicerçados. Assim como, compreender como elas afetam o comportamento de seus praticantes e suas relações sociais. Para interpretar tais significados e experiências foram adotados os referenciais da antropologia interpretativa de Clifford Geertz e o método etnográfico. A pesquisa realizou-se em dois campos distintos, um Núcleo de Reiki e a Igreja Messiânica Mundial, ambos em Ribeirão Preto,SP , no período de outubro de 2009 a janeiro de 2012. Participaram deste estudo 15 reikianos como sujeitos principais e 5 frequentadores da Núcleo, como sujeitos secundários; mais 14 messiânicos, sujeitos principais e 5 frequentadores da Igreja, como sujeitos secundários. Os dados foram coletados por meio de observação participante, entrevistas semiestruturadas e diário de campo. Os principais resultados indicam que a crença no poder curativo nessas energias, reiki e johrei, aparece como principal sustentação de sua eficácia. Tanto os ensinamentos da Igreja Messiânica, como os ensinamentos e teorias associados ao reiki, foram capazes de fornecer novos sentidos para questões ou problemas desses sujeitos, modificando comportamentos como humor, agressividade, tolerância e sociabilidade, possibilitando a emergência de uma \"identidade holística\" e a configuração de novas \"comunidades de encantamento\" em torno dessas duas práticas.
Countercultural movements, initiated mainly in the 60\'s and 70\'s, questioned the capitalist- technocratic society and encouraged greater politicization of social life, enabling the extension of the debates and tensions that affected the existing social institutions, refuting established paradigms. This fact allowed a (re)valuing and even reappropriation (or creation) of holistic perspectives regarding the body and health, and the inclusion of other explanatory dimensions, beyond the ones offered by biomedical rationality. With an increased acceptance of alternative or complementary practices, there was more space for the return of ancient healing methods through hands, among them, those that do not require direct touch between \"healer\" and patient, such as reiki and johrei, of the World Messianic Church. This study aimed to recognize and interpret the meanings of reiki and johrei, considering the technical and conceptual frameworks upon which they are based, as well as to understand how they affect the behavior of its practitioners and their social relations. In order to interpret these meanings and experiences, Clifford Geertz\'s interpretive anthropology and the ethnographic method were adopted as frameworks. The research was carried out in two sites, a Reiki Center and the World Messianic Church, both in Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, Brazil, from October 2009 to January 2012. The study included 15 reiki practitioners as main subjects and 5 frequenters of the Center, as secondary subjects; 14 messianic as main subjects, and 5 frequenters of the Church, as secondary subjects. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews and field diary. The main results indicate that belief in the healing power of these energies, reiki and johrei, is the main support of their effectiveness. Both the Messianic Church doctrine as well as the doctrine and theories associated with reiki, were able to provide new meanings to issues or problems of these subjects, modifying behaviors such as mood, aggressiveness, tolerance and sociability, allowing for the emergence of a \"holistic identity\" and the setting of new \"communities of enchantment\" regarding these two practices.

Resumo: A Resolução CFO-82/2008 divulgada em 1º de Outubro de 2008 baixou normas para habilitação de Cirurgiões-Dentistas (CD) nas Práticas Integrativas e Complementares (PIC) no Brasil. Os objetivos do trabalho foram: identificar e analisar as evidências científicas disponíveis no campo das PIC na odontologia, bem como conhecer as motivações que desencadearam a busca de CD pela habilitação em PIC. Os resultados da pesquisa encontram-se disponibilizados nesta tese em oito capítulos (artigos). Os três primeiros capítulos abordam revisões sistemáticas que contemplem dimensões além de parâmetros clínicos e as evidências do uso clínico das PIC em saúde bucal. No quarto capítulo são abordadas as percepções de estudantes do curso de odontologia sobre a incorporação do ensino das PIC durante o período de graduação. O quinto e o sexto capítulo apresentam os resultados de duas revisões sistemáticas da literatura referentes à captação de dados qualitativos por meio de entrevistas telefônicas e por meio de outros tipos de entrevistas conduzidas à distância. No sétimo capitulo, apresenta-se a distribuição geográfica dos CD habilitados em 2009 para o exercício das PIC no Brasil. O oitavo e último capítulo consiste de um estudo qualitativo sobe as motivações que desencadearam a busca dos CD pela habilitação em PIC. Com o desenvolvimento da pesquisa foi possível: a) expor à comunidade científica uma proposta de metodologia que extrapola a compilação de dados clínicos e quantitativos, que não alcançam informações além das intervenções e desfechos clínicos (capítulo 1); b) identificar que a literatura analisada revelou maior volume de publicação de estudos sobre laserterapia odontológica e que embora existam evidências positivas do uso das PIC na odontologia, os artigos avaliados apresentaram limitações referentes à qualidade e consistência de seus resultados (capítulo 2); c) identificar o predomínio de evidências positivas decorrentes do uso das PIC em diferentes contextos de saúde bucal (capítulo 3); d) identificar que os estudantes de odontologia, nas instituições pesquisadas, consideram importante a incorporação do ensino das PIC durante o curso de graduação (capítulo 4); e) verificar que os artigos analisados apresentam superficialmente o modo como as entrevistas telefônicas (ET) foram planejadas e conduzidas sendo que o baixo custo e a necessidade de pequena infra-estrutura foram às principais justificativas para a opção da utilização das ET na coleta de dados qualitativos (capítulo 5); f) verificar que o assunto mais estudado foi à comparação de ED com outras técnicas de coleta de dados seguido de estudos sobre a viabilidade das ED e de estudos avaliativos de instrumentos para captação de dados por telefone (capítulo 6); g) verificar a existência da concentração de profissionais habilitados no Estado de São Paulo, identificar que a maioria desses pertence ao sexo feminino e que possui habilitação em Laserterpia (capítulo 7); h) identificar que a principal motivação para a busca das habilitações em PIC aplicadas a saúde bucal foi à curiosidade despertada por diferentes estímulos, sobretudo aqueles compreendidos nas demandas pessoais e profissionais (capítulo 8)
Abstract: The Resolution CFO-82/2008 released on 1 October 2008 lowered standards for habilitation of Dental Surgeons (DS) in Complementary and Integrative Practices (CIP) in Brazil. The aim of this study were to identify and analyze the available scientific evidence in the field of CIP in dentistry, as well as knowing the motivations of CD that led to the search for vetting in PIC. The research results were available in this thesis in eight chapters (articles). The first three chapters cover the elaboration process of systematic reviews that include dimensions beyond of clinical parameters and of clinical evidence of the use of CIP in buccal health. The fourth chapter deals with the perceptions of students of dentistry about the incorporation of the teaching of CIP during graduation. The fifth and sixth chapter presents the results of two systematic reviews of the literature concerning the capture of qualitative data through telephone interviews and through other types of interviews conducted at a distance. The seventh chapter presents the geographical distribution of DS habilitated in 2009 to exercise the CIP in Brazil. The eighth and final chapter consists of a qualitative study about the motivations of DS to get its habilitation in CIP. With the development of research was possible: a) expose to the scientific community a proposed methodology that goes beyond the compilation of clinical data and quantitative information that does not reach beyond the interventions and clinical outcomes (Chapter 1); b) identify that literature analyzed revealed higher number of published studies on dental laser therapy furthermore there is positive evidence of the use of CIP in dentistry, but the articles evaluated showed limitations regarding the quality and consistency of their results (Chapter 2); c) identify the prevalence of positive evidence from the use of CIP in different contexts of oral health (Chapter 3); d) identify that dental students in the institutions studied, considers important the incorporation of the teaching of the CIP during the undergraduate course (Chapter 4); e) verify that the analyzed articles presents superficially how the telephone interviews (TI) were planned and conducted thus the low cost and the need for small infrastructure were the main reasons for the choice of the use of TI in qualitative data collection (Chapter 5); f) verify that the most studied subject was the comparation of distance interviews (DI) with other techniques of data collection, followed by studies on the feasibility of DI and evaluative studies of instruments for data collection by phone (Chapter 6); g) verify the existence of the concentration of professionals in the State of Sao Paulo, identify the most of DS are female and has habilitation in Dental Laser therapy (Chapter 7); h) identify that the main motivation for the pursuit of habilitations in CIP applied to buccal health was curiosity aroused by different stimuli, especially those included in the personal and professional demands (Chapter 8)

AbstractSolving the chicken-or-egg problem and leveraging value contributing actors on the platform is crucial to establish dynamic platform-based ecosystems. A digital platform provider is challenged to manage multilateral platform architecture and governance mechanisms to establish an attractive platform-based ecosystem to foster third-party complementors to join. One of the key issues while establishing a platform-based ecosystem remains the decision about an adequate pricing model. Despite a large number of publications on platform governance, detailed pricing model analyses remain rare. In this explorative paper, we conduct a literature review, studying 62 relevant papers to explore the pricing impact factors to create a foundation for future research of price models in the under-researched setting of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The most relevant pricing factors and their distinctive characteristics are summed up in a multi-dimensional taxonomy. The developed taxonomy includes 13 impact factors and 38 characteristics of platform pricing. Our findings enable the decomposition and understanding of price models for their future improvement.

There is a vast body of literature in the economics and business academia investigating if the presence and development of clusters of related industries and complementors in the regional or local economy drive the firm or regional performance. Despite the high enthusiasm with which the businesses and policy makers embraced the cluster theory recently appeared also some contradicting evidence regarding the pure effect of participation of firms in this type of geographical bounded collaborative strategies and firm performance. In this paper, relying on empirical evidence provided from inside the firm by experienced managers we found relatively weak support for some aspects of cluster theory. Through a statistical analysis of the answers provided by 65 medium and large companies operating in the manufacturing sector in Romania we provide evidence of a relatively weak effect of presence of related industries and complementors in the local economy and productivity related performances (revenues, profits, labor productivity, customer satisfaction, organizational growth) and no relationship with innovation related performances (new product development, products and processes/operations improvement, diversification, market expansion). The findings from our paper contribute to the stream of research and theories which prioritize for the achievement of superior performances, what happens inside the firm, what the firm and company centric strategies, rather than the contextual conditions such as the presence and participation in local clusters.

By enabling the transaction of private resources among strangers, the sharing economy has increased consumer welfare, but it has also created negative externalities for society. This study investigates the tradeoff between negative externalities and platform performance in the short-term rental market. The goal is to identify the economic incentives for sharing economy platforms to self-regulate. Using data from Airbnb and parking fines data, this study finds that heterogeneous complementors contribute differently to this tradeoff, providing an opportunity for platform governance.
