Abstract:
The intersection of trauma with the need for safe, stable, sustainable, and long-term housing is important when working with survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). IPV advocacy agencies are advised to use a trauma-informed approach to help practitioners understand the impact of IPV on individuals. Housing First, a model addressing homelessness that provides permanent housing without preconditions, has been found to increase housing stability for survivors of IPV. Thus, we used a case study approach to examine how practitioners and administrators implement trauma-informed care in a Housing First program for IPV survivors. Trauma-informed care principles and the Housing First model were found to be complementary. The majority of clients in this program retained housing up to 3-months after services ended and increased their safety and knowledge of domestic violence. Combining Housing First with trauma-informed care may increase success for survivors of IPV.

Abstract:
This study examines the determinants of internal migration of working-age population among provinces in Spain in the aftermath of the economic crisis. It pays special attention to two features of migration that have not been sufficiently studied so far: (a) Distance, namely the differences between the determinants that are behind short-distance and long-distance movements; (b) Age, that is to say, whether young and adult migrants hold different motivations. To accomplish this aim, an extended model is used in which, apart from a variable capturing distance, both economic and non-economic (amenities) variables are included. Findings reveal that both economic factors (mainly unemployment and income) and amenities (measured by a climate condition variable) are more important for adult population and long-distance movements than for young population and movements between neighbouring provinces. Additional findings seem to convey the message that, as far as housing prices are concerned, they play a significant role when migration takes place between neighbouring provinces, but lose importance when all migrations are studied together. Moreover, the paper’s results do not cast, as expected, any doubt on the importance of distance regardless of the type of migration or age of the migrant.

Abstract:
Under the backdrop of China’s aging population and continuous rising housing price and base on theories pertaining to social status seeking, marriage matching and intergenerational family relationships, use the 2010 and 2014 CFPS national survey micro data, we examine the impact of rising housing price on the health of middle-aged and elderly people and the underlying mechanisms. Rising housing price has a significant negative impact on the health of middle-aged and elderly people, and this effect is also reflected in their physical health, mental acuity and emotional well-being. The internal mechanism is that social status seeking motivation plays a significant mediator role. Through further analysis, we find that competitive saving motive is another intermediate mechanism that causes rising housing price to affect the health of middle-aged and elderly people; it is complementary to the social status seeking motivation. What’s more, the mediation effect of the competitive saving motive is notably heterogeneous, as it exists only for middle-aged and elderly people with male or noncollege educated child but does not exist for those with female or college educated child.

Abstract:
The number of cars in Polish cities increases every year. Despite the coexistence of other means of transport, such as public transport or cycling - the car is still the favorite means of transport for many residents. The significant increase in the number of registered cars, which can be observed consistently since the beginning of the 1990s, has left its mark throughout the city, especially in the human residence zone. Car-free housing estates are an alternative. Residents consciously give up parking space deciding on the city's communication system. The main purpose of the article is to analyse the system of functioning of car-free settlements in Europe and in the world as well as to determine the factors favoring such investments. The complementary goal is to present the possibilities of implementing this type of housing estates in Polish cities, taking into account possible social, planning and spatial barriers.

Abstract:
The study examine the relationship of architecture, conservation and tourism in representing a cultural character. The study in particular assesses a building code which is the product of a collaborative government strategy between tourism planning and cultural conservations. The research directive study focus on approach in tourism planning and regulation in maintaining cultural representation. Study using a casestudy of Jambi, evaluates of legally binding guidelines in maintaining traditional architecture and investigates how local values are resilient to the vernacular identity. The findings indicate that in Jambi there is an emerging transformation towards the commercialization of local cultural products as potential tourism attractions and modernity effects. The study also provide a significant example of how to reach a desirable strategy of conservation, where a pragmatic approach can be complementary to the cognitive framework of local cultures and beliefs.

Abstract:
This paper presents a geographical perspective of the phenomena of housing activism and land-use conflicts per se. It focuses not only on their spatial manifestations, but also on the complexity of the perceived meanings, values, and the power relationships among the involved parties, rooting into activist geographies. The research methodology was based on two complementary methods: frame analysis to observe the emergence, sources of land-use conflicts, and nature of the relationships between the actors involved; and discourse analysis to explore the social interactions and power relations between structures and practices related to housing activism. For a more inclusive perspective on the sources of land-use conflicts and housing activism initiatives in Bucharest, we used a combination and triangulation of various sources and modes of data collection. Compared with other European cities with active civic engagement, this phenomenon is still emerging in Bucharest. Although conflicts are numerous, the civic initiatives are still fragmented and fail to generate a vision and implementable public policy. However, multiple assaults on urban spaces (green areas, historically protected areas) have resulted in more actions and actors (individual or organised) becoming civically engaged. The article contributes to the environmental debates that stress housing activism as a pathway to participatory planning initiatives.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to explore principal drivers affecting prices in the Australian housing market, aiming to detect the presence of housing bubbles within it. The data set analyzed covers the past two decades, thereby including the period of the most recent housing boom between 2012 and 2015. Design/methodology/approach The paper describes the application of combined enhanced rigorous econometric frameworks, such as ordinary least square (OLS), Granger causality and the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) framework, to provide an in-depth understanding of house price dynamics and bubbles in Australia. Findings The empirical results presented reveal that Australian house prices are driven primarily by four key factors: mortgage interest rates, consumer sentiment, the Australian S&P/ASX 200 stock market index and unemployment rates. It finds that these four key drivers have long-term equilibrium in relation to house prices, and any short-term disequilibrium always self-corrects over the long term because of economic forces. The existence of long-term equilibrium in the housing market suggests it is unlikely to be in a bubble (Diba and Grossman, 1988; Flood and Hodrick, 1986). Originality/value The foremost contribution of this paper is that it is the first rigorous study of housing bubbles in Australia at the national level. Additionally, the data set renders the study of particular interest because it incorporates an analysis of the most recent housing boom (2012-2015). The policy implications from the study arise from the discussion of how best to balance monetary policy, fiscal policy and macroeconomic policy to optimize the steady and stable growth of the Australian housing market, and from its reconsideration of affordability schemes and related policies designed to incentivize construction and the involvement of complementary industries associated with property.

Abstract:
Today, there is a housing shortage in the larger cities. This together with the long housing waiting lists makes it difficult for younger people to make a housing career and invest in a condominium. In 2014, the Swedish Parliament introduced the reform of attefallshus with the aim of reducing the housing shortage in the country and facilitating entry into the housing market. The work studies whether an attefall block can be a favorable housing concept and an example of such a housing concept is designed. The purpose of the study is to analyze which legal obstacles limit a block of attefall houses and whether the housing concept can possibly reduce the housing shortage. To answer the study's purpose and questions, interviews were conducted with experienced people in the field. The results show that very few attefallshus are currently used as dwellings. Instead they have other functions. Furthermore, the results show that the legal obstacles that limit an Attefall block are, according to the study, availability to existing one- or two residential buildings that allows additional buildings of in total 30 on the plot. The interviewees believe that the concept should change the name to single-family neighborhoods and establish detailed development plans specifically for this. The conclusions are that an attefall block will not be economically favorable, is impracticable and not a solution for housing shortages.

Cross-border migration of people from one country to another has become an increasingly important feature of the globalizing world and it raises many important economic, social, and political issues. Migration is overwhelmingly from less developed to more developed countries and regions. Some of the factors affecting migration include: differences between wages for equivalent jobs; access to the benefits system of host countries plus state education, housing, and health care; and a desire to travel, build new skills and qualifications, and develop networks. On a more economic standpoint, studies show that labor migration provides various advantages. Migrants can provide complementary skills to domestic workers, which can raise the productivity of both. Migration can also be a driver of technological change and a fresh source of entrepreneurs. Much innovation comes from the work of teams of people who have different perspectives and experiences. Furthermore, a convenient way to accommodate individual actors in the global economy is to view them as economically dependent workers rather than as citizens capable of bringing about social change. The economic globalization process has modified this perspective to some extent, with greater recognition of the integration of a diverse, but nationally based, workforce into production patterns that can span several sovereign jurisdictions and world regions.

During the twentieth century ‘affluence’ (both at the level of the individual household and society as a whole) became intimately linked with access to a range of prestige consumer durables. This book charts the inter-war origins of a process that would eventually transform these features of modern life from being ‘luxuries’ to ‘necessities’ for most British families. It examines how producers and retailers succeeded in creating mass (though not universal) markets for new suites of furniture, radios, modern housing, and some electrical and gas appliances, while also exploring why some other goods, such as refrigerators, telephones, and automobiles, failed to reach the mass market in Britain before the 1950s. Creating mass markets presented a formidable challenge for manufacturers and retailers. Consumer durables required large markets. Most involved significant research and development costs. Some, such as the telephone, radio, and car, were dependent on complementary investments in infrastructure. All required intensive marketing—usually including expensive advertising in national newspapers and magazines—while some also needed mass production methods (and output volumes) to make them affordable to a mass market. This study charts the pioneering efforts of entrepreneurs (many of whom are now largely forgotten) to provide consumer durables at prices affordable to a mass market and to persuade a sometimes reluctant public to embrace the new products and the consumer credit that their purchase required. The author shows that, contrary to much received wisdom, there was a ‘consumer durables revolution’ in inter-war Britain—at least for certain highly prioritized goods.

AbstractThe South African Lowveld is a region of land that lies between 150 and 2000 m above sea level. In summer the region is characterized by the maximum mean daily ambient temperature of 32 °C. The purpose of the study was to characterize indoor thermal environments in low-cost residential dwellings during summer seasons as climate is changing. Indoor and ambient air temperature measurements were performed at a 30-min temporal resolution using Thermochron iButtons in the settlement of Agincourt. 58 free running low-cost residential dwellings were sampled over the summer seasons of 2016 and 2017. Complementary ambient air temperature data were sourced from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). Data were transformed into hourly means for further analysis. It was found that hourly maximum mean indoor temperatures ranged between 27 °C (daytime) and 23 °C (nighttime) for both living rooms and bedrooms in summer 2016 while in 2017, maximum mean indoor temperatures ranged between 29 °C (daytime) and 26 °C (nighttime) in living rooms and bedrooms. Pearson correlations showed a positive association between indoor and ambient temperatures ranging between r = 0.40 (daytime) and r = 0.90 (nighttime). The association is weak to moderate during daytime because occupants apply other ventilation practices that reduce the relationship between indoor and ambient temperatures. The close association between nighttime ambient and indoor temperature can also be attributed to the effect of urban heat island as nighttime ambient temperature remain elevated; thus, influencing indoor temperatures also remain high. These findings highlight the potential threat posed by a rise in temperatures for low-cost residential dwellings occupants due to climate change. Furthermore, the high level of sensitiveness of dwellings to ambient temperature changes also indicates housing envelopes that have poor thermal resistance to withstand the Lowveld region’s harsh extreme heat conditions, especially during summer. The study findings suggest that a potential risk of indoor overheating exists in low-cost dwellings on the South African Lowveld as the frequency and intensity of heat waves rise. There is therefore a need to develop immediate housing adaptation interventions that mitigate against the projected ambient temperature rise for example through thermal insulation retrofits on the existing housing stock and passive housing designs for new housing stock.

Housing and mortgage markets sit at the intersection of growth regimes and the welfare state, as they are engines for economic growth and fulfill important social functions. This chapter shows how the different linkages between housing finance, the welfare state, and growth regimes shape the ways in which policy-makers utilize housing finance policies as growth strategies. In demand-led economies relying on credit and consumption, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, policy-makers can utilize fiscal, off-budget, and monetary policies as “financialized” growth strategies to stimulate housing demand, credit, and consumption. Countries based on export manufacturing, such as Germany, are complementary to conservative housing finance policies that restrain housing and domestic demand to secure cost competitiveness. To illustrate these arguments, the chapter details the contrasting political developments of housing finance policies as growth strategies in the United States and Germany since the 1970s.

Abstract:
This chapter describes and analyses an innovative form of partnership for the reception and integration of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in Gothenburg, Sweden. The municipality of Gothenburg works with children who arrive in Sweden without adults. It does this through a form of collaborative partnership (idéburnaoffentligapartnerskap, IOP) with nine civil society organisations. Often housing and care are the only services asylum-seeking children receive through municipal or contracted service providers. The Gothenburg IOP provides children with a wide variety of complementary services including psychosocial counselling, access to Swedish social networks through volunteer ‘friend’ families, tailored leisure time activities and summer work practice opportunities. This IOP partnership is experimental in Swedish local public policy. It has been successful in increasing municipal capacities through new patterns of more equal and long-term relations with civil society.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a critical approach towards the role that many courts are assuming in the protection of socio-economical rights in the Latin American context. It argues that the proper role of courts must necessarily vary according to the formulation of the social right in question. As a general rule, the more absolute and specifically formulated the right — or its corresponding obligation — the higher the institutional competence (legitimacy and competency) of courts will tend to be, and vice versa. When obligations are stated in vague fashion, such as the right to housing, health, and education in Colombia, Brazil, and South Africa, the room left for interpreting contending definitions is not only ample, but it often involves the intractable question of social policy design that must be studied by the executive and legislative branches. The chapter then contends that courts should play, at most, a complementary role. It invites courts to take more creative approaches in the enforcement of socio-economic rights.

Resumen: Con la Unidad de Habitación marsellesa, el Atelier Le Corbusier transformaba su personal y métodos. Recurrentemente, se ha denominado a ésta como la fase del Grand Atelier, en cuyo ocaso surgieron nuevos desafíos y elementos para un “espacio inefable”. De límites imprecisos, esa Búsqueda Paciente implicaba un estado de ánimo transicional que confrontaba a Le Corbusier con sus propios métodos y con algunos de sus colaboradores, a los que peyorativamente atribuyó el apodo de dattiers (datileras), debido a su presunta arrogancia y baja productividad. Este trabajo reconstruye los principales aspectos del paso de algunos colaboradores suramericanos de Le Corbusier por París entre 1948 y 1959. Su participación fue larga e intensa, alcanzando en ocasiones el estatus de coordinadores y abordando obras en todas las escalas. Aún cuando, entre ellos, sólo Augusto Tobito fue directamente calificado como dattier, sus colegas colombianos compartían algo de su rebeldía, autonomía o destreza; de ahí que les hagamos extensivo ese apelativo. Así pretendemos construir un relato que contrarreste las abundantes narrativas sobre proyectos e influencia del franco-suizo en territorio andino. Abstract: With Marseille Housing Unit, the Atelier Le Corbusier began a transformation of its staff and methods. Frequently, this phase is known as Le Grand Atelier, receiving new challenges during its ending, and conceiving new elements for an “ineffable space”. With undefined boundaries, the Patient Research involved a transitional frame of mind opposing Le Corbusier to his own proceedings and to some of his collaborators. Pejoratively, the master named them as dattiers (datepalms), due to their alleged arrogance and low productivity. This work reconstructs several aspects of the internship of some South American collaborators on Le Corbusier at Paris between 1948 and 1959. Their participation was extended and intense, allowing them to reach, in some cases, the status of coordinators, and engaging works in all the scales. Even though just Augusto Tobito was directly called as dattier, his Colombian coworkers shared his rebellion, autonomy or skills. That is why we also use that adjective for them.
