Abstract:
Mestrado em Economia
The European strategy for 2020 considers the innovation as one of the main features to boost the progress towards a competitive and sustainable European economy. Assuming that innovation contributes for competitiveness, the current work intends to focus on the relation between innovation and international competitiveness of two European small economies, namely Portugal and Latvia. There is evidence that small economies are characterized by higher trade liberalization and higher international competitiveness. To better understand the relation amongst innovation and international competitiveness, within the scope of the two small economies under study, it’s performed a comparative analysis between both countries and employed a statistical and sectorial analysis, with a shift-share analysis. Even under harsh economic conditions, innovation occurred in both countries. The results show that the international competitiveness of Portugal is related with its expenditures on R&D and patent applications while the Latvian international competitiveness is evidenced only with expenditures on R&D. The most internationally competitive sector of is the other manufactured goods and in Latvia is the food, drinks and tobacco sectors. Both countries show evidence of international competitiveness’ potential in the sector of transport and machinery equipment.

Abstract:
Lean management is a philosophy focused on identifying and eliminating waste throughout a product’s entire value stream. It originates from the manufacturing system of Japanese automotive manufacturer Toyota and attracted due to its tremendous success widespread attention worldwide. Lean promises significant benefits in terms of waste reduction, and increased organizational and supply chain communication and integration.Generally, in terms of operations and improvements service companies are far behind manufacturing industries. Transferring Lean management concept from the manufacturing shop floor to services might offer opportunities for improvements. Many manufacturing businesses have improved and profited by the use of Lean management methods and tools. Yet the benefits haven’t been as nearly as impressive for service industries applying Lean management principles. The challenge in applying Lean to services is the lack of widely available references for implementing Lean in a service organization. Although some successful examples of Lean implementations in service businesses could be noticed in the past no standardized framework or general guideline was solidified for implementing Lean management in service organizations. In addition, implementing Lean and achieving the levels of organizational commitment, employee autonomy, and information transparency needed to ensure its success is a complicated task. This paper approaches to develop a conceptual framework for implementing Lean management in service organizations. Based on a sound theoretical foundation of Lean management methods in production and considerations about service management, challenges of implementing Lean in a service environment are derived. Ultimately, a conceptual framework is developed to implement Lean management approach in service businesses using a specific set of Lean tools.

Barbosa, Francisco Vidal. "Implications of restructuring and privatisation for competitiveness and performance : two Brazilian steel companies." Thesis, Aston University, 1996. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10719/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the effects of the privatisation process on productivity, competitiveness and performance in two major Brazilian steel companies, which were privatised in between 1991 and 1993. The case study method was adopted in this research due to its strengths as a useful technique allowing in-depth examination of the privatisation process, the context in which it happened and its effects on the companies. The thesis has developed a company analysis framework consisting of three components: management, competitiveness/productivity and performance and examined the evidence on the companies within this framework. The research indicates that there is no straightforward relationship between privatisation, competitiveness and performance. There were many significant differences in the management and technological capabilities, products and performance of the two companies, and these have largely influenced the effects of privatisation on each company. Company Alpha's strengths in technological and management capabilities and high value added products explain strong productivity and financial performance during and after privatisation. Company Beta's performance was weak before the privatisation and remained weak immediately after. Before the privatisation, weaknesses in management, commodity type low value added products and shortage of funds for investment were the major problems. These were compounded by greater government interference. Despite major restructuring, the poor performance has continued after privatisation largely because the company has not been able to improve its productivity sufficiently to be cost competitive in commodity type markets. Both companies state that their strategies have changed significantly. They claim to be more responsive to market conditions and customers and are attempting to develop closer links with major customers. It is not possible to assess the consequences of these changes in the short time that has elapsed since privatisation but Alpha appears to be more effective in developing a coherent strategy because of its strengths. Both companies accelerated their programme of organisational restructuring and reducing the number of their employees during the privatisation process to improve productivity and performance. Alpha has attained standards comparable to major international steel companies. Beta has had to make much bigger organisational changes and cuts in its labour force but its productivity levels still remain low in comparison with Alpha and international competitors.

Abstract:
The article deals with green competitiveness advantages for companies. The green competitive development is considered to be an essential condition to provide a high level of sustainable social and economic development. The authors systematized scientific investigation of the key determinants of the green competitiveness according to the marketing, technological, innovative, communicative, stakeholders, qualitative, level, fiscal and ethic approaches. The primary purpose of the study is to analyse the preconditions for promotion the green competitiveness of enterprises and analyse the influence of the using marketing tools (ensuring the proper quality (environmental) of green goods and services, differentiation of pricing policy, creation of green commercial networks and platforms, promotion of eco-goods and green activity, interaction with the consumers) on a company’s descriptive variables (market segment (sales volumes), green image, efficiency of companies activity, products competitiveness). The object of study is the companies from the food industry, agriculture, machinery-producing industry and production of building materials. The quantitative study employed a sample of 110 companies, for testing each competitive advantage dimension against the established green marketing tools and company descriptive variables using the method of logistic regressions. The obtained results showed the level of integration mix marketing tools for supporting the green competitive advantages. The highest level of integration is in the food industry, the lowest level – in the production of building materials. Provided evaluation gives the opportunity to suggest the system of marketing instruments for forming and strengthening the company’s green competitive advantages.

Lee, Angie Lay Kiok. "The impact of foreign direct investment upon parent companies' competitiveness : an empirical study on Singaporean industrial multinational enterprises." Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1993. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21335.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic research on foreign direct investment (FDI) has concentrated primarily on its motives and means of market entry. In contrast, comparatively little work has examined the impact of FDI upon an investing firm, and of this, the focus has in the main concentrated on just one dimension, namely the impact upon its financial performance. This study argues for the need to incorporate non-financial measures such as the impact of FDI upon an investing MNE's performance in key functional areas that include its technology, production, marketing, human resource and procurement management. It also argues for the need to assess the impact of FDI through detailed case studies on individual MNEs. It presents empirical evidence gathered from three Singaporean industrial MNEs: Yeo Hiap Seng Limited, Wearnes Brothers Limited and Times Publishing Limited. The findings confirm that the diversity of environments which they are exposed to, provides them with multiple stimuli and subsequently allows them to develop capabilities and learning opportunities not open to domestic firms. The findings also strongly suggest that all the three case companies see the current losses incurred by their overseas subsidiaries as part of the price they are willing to pay in order to achieve their long-range corporate goals. Indeed, despite suffering from poor financial returns from their FDI, all of them regard their foreign operations as "successful" in marketing and/or technical terms. In other words, this study refutes the body of literature (i.e. explanations of FDI based on economics) which suggests that a firm will undertake FDI particularly only in those countries where it perceives the highest gain in financial returns. Conversely, this study suggests that a firm's choice of foreign market entry mode will depend on its strategic motives for overseas expansion. It also strongly suggests that MNEs are willing to accept trade-offs (e.g. short-term profits) for their long-term corporate goals (e.g. to establish an integrated manufacturing and marketing network in their major markets and/or increase overseas market share). Lastly, this study provides conclusive empirical evidence to demonstrate that the performance of an MNE's particular overseas investment and its impact upon the parent company's competitiveness has significant influence upon its subsequent FDI decisions and characteristics.

Abstract:
Identifying the variables that positively or negatively impacts a company´s Cost of Capital or, in a general way, a country´s Cost of Capital has been the objective of much research published in the academic environment in the last few years. The appearance of the Capital Asset Pricing Model - CAPM in the early ´60s could be seen as a milestone inasmuch as, after its publications, various studies, such as those performed by Gitman e Forrester (1977), Gitman e Mercurio (1982), Moore e Reichert (1983), Trahan e Gitman (1995), Bruner (1998), Block (2000) e Graham e Harvey (2001 e 2002), challenge the investment decision-making practices and cost of capital estimates in US corporations. The variables that affect the profitability of a determined industry were more closely studied after the publication of the Five Competitive Forces Model (Porter, 1980). Based on the huge complexities that involves those issues, and which arose during this research, one of the principle questions to be answered became: what are the variables that influence the total Cost of Capital available for a company, in any given country, in light of the fact that it may be very different from country to country? Upon analyzing the data, we see that, in emerging countries, the cost of capital is related to Employment, Education, Basic Infrastructure, International Investment and International Trade, while in developed countries, it is related to Basic Infrastructure, Prices, Public Finance and Managerial Practices.

Meyer, Petrus Gerhardus. "Determinants of credit risk mitigation in lending to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) companies, from a banker's perspective." Diss., Unisa, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/163.

Abstract:
Credit risk mitigation that can be applied by commercial banks in assessing the lending decision /credit risk when advances and equity investments are considered for BEE classified companies.
A research report presented to the Graduate School of Business Leadership, University of South Africa
The previous political dispensation limited black people’s participation in the South African economy. Poor credit records, lack of training, resulting in skills and capacity gaps further limited entry into the lending market. These aspects are considered the main limitations in obtaining finance for the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). This research report focuses on how credit risk can be mitigated by commercial banks in lending to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) companies in the medium to large market. Exploratory research was conducted using various methods to achieve methodological triangulation. These methods consisted of a literature review, interviewing experts in the field and case studies. A qualitative research approach was followed. It was found that the lack of own contribution and security were still prevalent in the medium to large market, but the quality of management (little training and skills) was deemed not to be a limitation as suitable credit risk mitigants were identified. No credit risk mitigants were identified to mitigate poor credit records. It is postulated that by adopting and applying the identified credit risk mitigants, commercial banks can increase their success rate in lending to BEE companies. It will further assist in the transformation of black people and compliance with the Financial Services Charter. It is recommended that a similar study be conducted in the agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing industry. The reasons why BEE companies applications are declined could also be investigated. Further studies could also explore other external factors such as economical, legal and social that could have an influence on the funding of BEE companies.

"Identifying qualitative and quantitative factors affecting the competitiveness of companies on the Swedish road haulage market : A case study of Wirens Akeri and EA Akeri." Thesis, Högskolan i Jönköping, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-36673.

Abstract:
Introduction The road transport in Europe is the dominant means of transportation in the region. The European road haulage market is considerably liberalized and integrated. However, there are big discrepancies between the different regions in the market in regard to the costs the haulage companies have. In Sweden haulage companies have higher fuel and drivers costs compared to other European countries. Purpose The purpose of the study is to investigate how Swedish companies are remaining competitive in a highly integrated market which is not favourable for companies established in countries with high costs. Method The study will be conducted through a multiple holistic case study. The owners of the companies EA Akeri and Wirens Akeri would be interviewed. The data collection techniques would be mixture between an interview with open ended questions and a questionnaire. The data processing technique would allow for the use of both qualitative and quantitative data. Findings The study has found out that the researched companies rely heavily on utilizing as much of their loading capacity as possible. They do that through using terminal buildings and keeping close contact with customers. In addition to that, companies are also working on minimizing their costs through using HVO fuel, using 25.25 meters modular combinations, paying attention to tire pressure and tire allocation and educating and monitoring the driving style of their drivers. However, the companies are not using extra aerodynamic components than what is preinstalled and they are not considering lowering the drivers’ wages by relocating the company operations in a neighbouring country. Future Scope The research can provide useful framework for managers willing to operate their road haulage companies more effectively. In addition to that, the research might provide the foundation for other case studies investigating the same problem or even testing issues like the importance of close customer contact or which are the factors affecting the most the fuel consumption according to managers or drivers.

This study analyses firms' compliance with disclosure requirements of the International Accounting Standard 37 (IAS 37 - provisions, contingent liabilities and contingent assets), through a thorough examination of the 20-F Reports of 91 foreign companies for the fiscal year of 2016. These companies have in common that they are foreign firms cross-listed in the U.S. stock exchanges NASDAQ or NYSE, they report under IFRS both locally and in the U.S., and they are from 14 countries that obligate the adoption of IFRS for locally traded companies. I measured disclosure compliance levels for each required item and overall, by calculating two indexes, one stricter and another more tolerant in treating omissions on the non-applicability of an item to the company. My hypothesis confronts the assertions that the legal tradition to which a company is submitted influences its disclosure level. An important finding is that the enforcement of the SEC regulations is what mostly explains the level of disclosure, rather than the legal tradition of the firm’s country of origin. I found that cross-listed companies under the same enforcement of the SEC, do not differ in their level of disclosure, regardless of the legal tradition of their country of origin. No statistically significant differences were found between the disclosure level for companies from countries with common law tradition, compared to countries with civil law roots. Additionally, the study concluded that the local financial markets development and the local regulation of the security exchanges are variables that significantly influence the level of disclosure.

The aim of the first study was to analyze the chain of wheat seed production in Rio Grande do Sul from the forces acting on it. For the analysis, it was used the methodology of the five competitive forces: competition within the industry, new entrants, substitute products, bargaining power of suppliers, and bargaining power of buyers. Initially, a survey of secondary data from various sources was done, among which the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), the Association of Seed Producers of Rio Grande do Sul (Apassul), the National Supply Company (CONAB) and the Brazilian Association of Wheat Industry (ABITRIGO). The study showed that there is great imbalance within the forces that act on the chain of wheat seed production in Rio Grande do Sul, with the bargaining power of buyers making strong pressure on all parts of the chain, even where there is no direct commercial relationships. The second study aimed at, from the implementation of the Plant Cultivars Protection Law (LPC), and the Seeds and Seedlings Law (LS), quantifying the wheat seed companies of Rio Grande do Sul based on their scale of production, relations with class entities, plant breeding companies, and innovation, and to compare current data with the data obtained before the consolidation of the LPC and before the LS became effective. This study was done using secondary data generated from the database of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. The study showed that the distribution of seed companies in relation to the scale of production has changed very little since 2002. Companies that produce up to 460 tons continue to predominate in the market. Regarding innovation, the study showed that the number of cultivars in the portfolio of seed companies is directly proportional to its size, and that every company, excluding the very young, is seeking new cultivars for their portfolios. Larger firms access more new cultivars because of their scale.

Abstract:
The construction and real estate industry has a major impact on society; financially, environmentally as well as socially. However, the industry is characterized by being inefficient, conservative and lagging behind in digital development. Studies have shown that real estate companies are an important key player in driving the industry's digital development forward. It has also been emphasized that real estate companies' strategy work is of great importance to enable this development. Working strategically is described as a crucial factor in enabling companies to survive and be competitive in the market. Strategies are described at three different organizational levels, which are at corporate group, a business or an operational level. Research has shown that great benefits can be seen upon interconnecting the strategies between the different organizational levels. This makes it easier to coordinate strategic work and thus eases working towards the same processes and goals. One strategy that concerns the use of digital technology is the functional strategy IT strategy. When it is linked to the business strategy, a digital strategy is created. Digital strategy, in other words, can be described by the fact that digital technology is integrated with business activities. A digital strategy is highlighted as an important driver for driving digital development forward. The following thesis work aims to investigate how a digital strategy can substantiate competitiveness and value creation by examining how real estate companies' business strategy and IT strategy are aligned. The study also investigates the overall work of real estate companies to develop digitally. The study is based on a qualitative method, where data was obtained from semi-structured interviews from two real estate companies. The companies are referred to as Real Estate Company A and Real Estate Company B. Both companies are primarily focused on commercial properties, with long-term ownership. The respondents from the interviews are head of operations, project managers, assistant project managers and digitization experts. The study's results indicate that there is a higher awareness of the real estate companies' business strategy, as compared to strategies of digital work. Regarding the connection between the use of digital technology and the business activities, it is clear that the preexisting conditions are good, but not clearly stated and conscious within the companies, which makes them perceived as non-existent. The conclusions drawn from the study are that strategical work is seen as extremely complex, hence high demands are placed on the structure of the work. For digital technology to be integrated into business activities, the study shows that everything is ultimately about being able to demonstrate a direct benefit. At present, the digital strategy does not support competitiveness and value creation within real estate companies to the extent that it has the ability to, as it has not been able to demonstrate a direct benefit. However, it can be questioned whose benefit drives the real estate companies' digital development. Is it the customer who demands a benefit? Or is it the companies that needs to offer the customer something that creates benefits, before the customer has demanded it himself? This can be seen as a complex paradox, which may be an explanation for the real estate companies' digital development being slowed down.

An improved utilization of potentials, tapping into new markets, maintaining competitiveness: These are the goals if the responsible echelons in a company decide on measures to reorganize operations. The key factor in this process of restructuring remains the human element. As a rule, SMEs are ideally suited for a sucessfull restructuring. Main advantages in contrast to large corporations: Their operations are not overly complicated, the staff is small enough to build up informal ties, the information network is closely-knit, and decisions are made faster than in large companies. The key question in Change Mangement processes is: Under which conditions are further training offers prepared to ensure the sustainable employabilty of the employess?

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the design of Competitive Intelligence for specific training company. The main objective of this work is to characterize and help choosing the person responsible for carrying out activities related to the CI in the company, to identify the most appropriate information sources to obtain information about the company and software tools for their monitoring. The theoretical part is drawn on the literature and is dedicated to the description of competitive intelligence and characteristics of different phases of the CI cycle. Other sections are devoted to typologies of information resources and software tools for their monitoring. Following parts are dealing with the characteristics of the category of small and medium-sized enterprises; the investigated company and education organizations fit in this category. The practical part of this thesis deals with the possible proposal of Competitive Intelligence for specific training company. As the first step we realized the analysis of the business environment and its major limitations. In the following part we deal with the CI system design, consisting of a selection of variant realization, along with the characteristics of the responsible person, the definition of information resources and recommending software tools for regular monitoring. The practical benefit of this work is to introduce CI system design, based on monitoring of information sources, obtaining information and their subsequent evaluation in relation to the competitive environment of the company. Another important asset of the work is a sample of implementation of such a system in the company of categories of small and medium-sized enterprises, which respects their limitations.

Abstract:
The gradually increasing competition that occurs in mature markets, pushes the companies to consider new ways of competing. The more mature the market becomes the higher level of competitive fulfillment and edge is needed. E.g. for Scania the dimension high quality was until now considered a competitive advantage, but is currently evolving towards a dimension that is necessary to fulfill to even act within the market. Thus, companies such as Scania have to push their limits everywhere possible across their organization. One way to push the limits of R&D and product development (PD) is, based on this thesis and other work, implementing a simulation based product development (SBPD) process. The aim of this thesis has been, by applying a quality function deployment (QFD) model, to show the influence a SBPD process can have on increased competitiveness. By combining published literature within the field with empirical results mostly gained from interviews, nine components representing a SBPD process could be found. These components were characterized in the following categories: IT-infrastructure, design, model & test, and organizational. Depending on the level of fulfillment of these components the SBPD process is more or less implemented within the company. The two components that are considered the most important for Scania in terms of both increased competitiveness and a possible transition towards a SBPD process are Virtual representa-tion of the product and the process throughout the whole PD process and A model driven/model based approach. The work of this thesis has also shown, in correlations with previous published literature, that a SBPD process can significantly decrease the lead-time and cost of development, and at the same time increase the knowledge about the product and the process. The research has also shown that a SBPD process can considerably improve both the internal and the external collaboration. However attaining such a process where these competitive advantages can be gained affects the whole organization, the way development is performed and also the way resources are used. A fully implemented SBPD process has been shown to positively impact the following competitive dimensions; Frequency of product introductions, Lead-time of development, PD process flexibility, Degree of innovation, Customization of the offer, Collaboration with internal and external partners, Knowledge about products and processes, R&D cost, manufacturing cost, Focus on customers operational economics, Product quality, Product safety and Focus on environmental sustainability of the product & the processes. But, to get a positive impact on all these dimensions the components representing a SBPD process must be implemented and applied. Furthermore, this thesis also provides a framework for other companies to evaluate the impact a SBPD process can have on their competitiveness. The analysis model aims to guide companies that want to adopt a SBPD process. The framework can indicate how a SBPD process would impact the firm's competitive strategy. But also to provide guidance to which components that would be more important to implement in order to reach a competitive SBPD process.

Abstract:
The globalization of the economy and business consolidates a new context of fierce competition, changing markets, where you can no longer hear the past to guide the decisions of the now much less of the future. With that come the crisis, the competitors rapidly change its manner to compete, new concepts are applied in management and business organization, new technologies appears with lifecycles each time shorter, making obsolete the ones in use. In the business sectors most affected by the new environment, where increased competition is more present and visible, seems to be increasingly difficult for one company alone to face the competition. Then we see some evidence that companies are seeking other forms of management and performance to compete, including even the competition in conjunct. In other words, a form of competition of companies in which they join other companies to compete in the market with others agglomerates of companies. This union has been evidenced by different formats of supra-companies. Among these formats we can highlight the business clusters and business networks, in which governance transcends the boundaries of a single company, reaching the entire agglomerate. The concern of this study was to determine if, within groups of companies named in the literature as clusters, exist or not among the companies in it, some of them that are also guided by supra-companies strategies of networks business, not just by cluster strategies. This was verified by this research, two clusters of important business in their countries, the Port wine, in the Douro Valley, Portugal, and the wines of Vinhedos Valley, in Serra Gaúcha, Brazil, we found companies oriented with a dual strategy, in other words, by cluster strategy and business network strategy. And this discover is new in the literature of supra-companies entities, because those entities themselves are not of very recent scholarship. Another concern of this research was to verify if the fact of companies driven by a dual strategy had contributed to an increase in their competitiveness, what the study also confirmed

The thesis determines the conceptual foundations for the formation of a systematic approach to the analysis of insurance companies’ activity through the adaptation of the categorical basis for “insurance product”, “insurance transaction”, “insurance services”. It studies the methodological basis of the systematic approach to the definition and assessment of competitiveness of insurance companies by examining the system of ratings’ structure, interpretation of the essence of competition on the insurance market and the competitive ability of insurance companies and insurance services. It substantiates the necessity of research and the formation of a systematic approach to the comprehensive analysis of competitiveness of insurance services. It studies the dynamics of Ukraine’s insurance market through the definition of competitive positions of the leading insurance companies by comparing the effective parameters of their activities. It analyzes the dynamics of development and determines the specific character of the activity of life and non-life insurance companies on the insurance market, particularly through the impact of the financial crisis. It offers the use of insurance marketing and strategic management in the provision of insurance services and assessment of competitiveness of insurance companies, as well as the methodology for the formation of an integrated ratio for the estimation of insurers’ competitiveness. It substantiates the use of the modeling methodology in assessing the competitiveness of the insurance market using the economic and mathematical apparatus by forming a multi-dimensional model. It develops the scientific and methodological approaches to the assessment of the impact of economic recessions on the development of insurance market with the use of models for the forecasting of ratios, which reflect the changes in the insurers’ activity.

Abstract:
This thesis evolves around image and its significance while developing customers' loyalty and increasing company's competitiveness in a highly competitive market. The topic is studied in-depth from the organisational perspective and delves into the differing motivations of hotel operators towards shaping favourable image as well as examining how the hotel's image affects customer loyalty and helps the company to increase its competitiveness. Finally, it analyses and compares which public relations tools are the most effective in the process of image creation and developing customer loyalty. From this perspective image becomes a central issue impacting company's future growth, performance and finally success. The research was conducted on the Auckland international hotel chains. Auckland hosts numerous conferences and events that drives demand for accommodation and in a way, creates a conducive environment to hotel operators for future expansion. Thus, hotels compete strongly with one another constantly looking for a competitive advantage by growing their customer base. My thesis outlines the hotels' management efforts and analyses their strategies in the context of changing customers' demands and market trends. With respect to methodological issues, my thesis is based on a qualitative approach and follows an interpretivist paradigm. The research background has been delineated as have been my respondents' profile to provide additional information about the organisation they represent. The research findings described at the end of this thesis document how important image is for a modern hotel and what initiatives should be followed to ensure success. Image and loyalty are closely interrelated as positive image affects customers' loyalty. In order to achieve a balance between sustaining a competitive advantage and increasing loyal customer base a number of managerial implications have been discovered. Detailed analysis of these findings may help the companies to establish a more favourable position in the global market and create mutually beneficial relationships which further help the organisation to grow.Having aimed at exploring the importance of image as a medium that affects company's competitiveness and customers' loyalty towards brand, this study has provided some useful indications for hotel companies as to what should be undertaken to gain loyal customers and improve company's performance on the market.

Abstract The special steel industry has been developed in Taiwan more than 30 years. Now it is a well-developed industry. With the development of this industry, a complete headstream, midstream and downstream process system has been built. With restricted lands, Taiwan is crowded with people. This limits the development of the special steel market in Taiwan. The companies of Taiwan, therefore, have to develop the export market and confront with the competition of other international companies as well. The special steel industry in China, in particular, is an extreme threat to that in Taiwan. Taiwan’s companies, as a result, should ponder how to face the competition of China and other international industries. This thesis attempts to explore the operation of the special steel industry in Taiwan and the influence of China’s steel industry, which has been sprung up recently, on Taiwan’s market. Also, it focuses on the strategies which Taiwan’s companies adopt to face the international competition. With regard to the research of steel industry, most of the studies concentrate on the discussion of carbon steel. Little attention is paid to special steel. Therefore, this thesis aims to do some research on several special steel companies in Taiwan to examine how they figure out the strategies to administrate their companies. The subjects of this research are the fourteen financial holding companies established nationwide around 2003, and 2003 as a reference point, starting from beginning of 1997 until end of 2008, total twelve years. In reference to IMF 2007 report, it mentioned that H Index, developed by Panzar and Rosse (1987) and HHI Index, developed by Bikker and Haaf (2000) were used to analyze the ability to compete of a company, before and after the merge. After analysis in this essay, the ability to compete with others after merge is much higher than of it before merge. Increased H Index and decreased HHI Index show the market concentration ratio of finance market does not raise, and the size of the company should be continuously extended. At the same time, the after-merge finance holding companies also show the negative effects, and market concentration ratio does not raise evidently. The after-merge finance holding companies should do their best to resolve the problems, in order to raise the ability to compete with others.

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry in Taiwan has started to apply modern production equipment in mass-production of commercial commodities since 1960. Meanwhile, the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations have been initiated as guidelines for international pharmaceutical companies. The GMP regulations have been launched in Taiwan since 1980. As announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2018, all the Taiwanese pharmaceutical manufacturers of concentrated herbal extracts should complete the four steps of the validation process within 8 years from 2020. However, the timeline of implementing new regulations on TCM pharmaceutical companies has not yet been announced. In the near future, the regulations on the TCM pharmaceutical companies will transit from GMP to GMP validation. In the study, in-depth interviews were undertaken with seven managers, who were recruited from five TCM pharmaceutical companies of different scales and were empowered to make critical decisions. The subjects were asked to express their opinions regarding the issue of applying GMP validation to the TCM pharmaceutical industry and its effects on the industrial competitiveness. As shown by the results, there was discrepancy among 7 respondents regarding the issue. However, they made the similar prediction that the number of TCM pharmaceutical company would decrease after the implementation of the new regulations. In addition, they all possessed the same understanding that the payments from the national health insurance were too low for traditional Chinese medicine. However, the interviewees expressed different opinions on various issues related to GMP validation, such as future investment, professional personnel fostering, domestic and international marketing, marketing strategy transformation and consumer confidence. The diverse opinions on GMP validation might arise as a result of the company size, leading products, future products and sales channels. With regard to the possible effects of GMP validation on TCM companies and the improvement of the industrial competitiveness, the study used SWOT analysis with the aid of the data collected from in-depth interviews to study the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats confronting TCM companies and the association of GMP validation with the industrial competitiveness. Some useful information was also provided to peer TCM companies and the government. Keywords: Chinese Medicine pharmaceutical Companies, GMP, Validation, Competitiveness, SWOT

Abstract:
The dominance of global markets has created a need for organisations to search for a new set of competences to enable them to survive into the future. Whether they operate in local or international markets, global challenges are felt in every business. Research posits global mindset as a prerequisite for internationalisation, but there is emerging debate about whether global mindset is also a competence required for companies perform and compete in a local context as well. This is a qualitative and largely descriptive study that was conducted in two companies. The primary research was undertaken using electronic surveys. These were structured questionnaires used to obtain data to ascertain global mindset maturity, performance and competitiveness. Secondary data was used for actual performance and competitiveness measures. Two propositions out of the three were supported. The global mindset factors in a local context fall within the bounds of the three core global mindset themes. Global mindset maturity was found to be significant in the performance of an organisation in a local context. However, the relationship between global mindset and competitive was not explained by the results. Contextual global mindset was the most significant variable in explaining the variation in performance.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to better understand Norwegian firms’ perception of the Portuguese strengths and weaknesses as a destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The focus will be on the Norwegian maritime industry, more specifically shipbuilding, repair and services. The first and uttermost importance of the study is to understand why Norwegian companies that have not invested in the Portuguese maritime industry might be reluctant to, and how the government can be advised to avoid similar pitfalls in the future. The single case study approach is utilized to understand the different aspects of the research questions. The data collection was performed through primary and secondary data. Three interviews were conducted with knowledgeable actors in the Norwegian maritime industry. The findings indicate there are areas for improvements and areas that can be further utilized and developed. The geographical location, natural resources, highly educated personnel, governmental emphasis, and excess capacity are found through primary and secondary data collection to be favorable aspects in the Portuguese maritime industry. The lack of skilled workers in production, regulatory complexity, macroeconomic instability, and difference in prosperity level between the Norwegian and Portuguese maritime industry, are found to be potential distortions. Recommendations are to develop the maritime industry through focus and regional development.

Abstract:
M.Comm.
Financial Condition Reporting is the new proposed risk-based approach to calculating the solvency requirements of the short-term insurance companies in South Africa by the regulator, the Financial Services Board. A risk-based approach to calculating capital requirements is currently the most popular in the developed nations with the United States of America being the champion of this. Australia has implemented its own version of the risk-based capital approach and the United Kingdom has implemented ICAS which is a prelude to Solvency II to be implemented by the European Union. It is unknown how Financial Condition Reporting in South Africa will affect the levels of competitiveness of the short-term insurance industry. Qualitative study was done firstly to develop an understanding of the regulation of financial services and secondly to get an appreciation of how the regulation of financial services affects the levels of competition within the industry. Due to the fact that different people (organisations) have different views on the proposed financial reporting, qualitative data methods provide participants with an opportunity to discuss their reasons. The intention of the researcher was to get as much information as possible from the interviews and hence one of the data collection techniques employed was the use of a tape recorder.. Generally all participants indicated that Financial Condition Reporting was more than welcome in the short-term insurance industry. It was evident that this will force the board of directors of short-term insurance companies to be involved in the risk management of the organisation. In turn this will allow an in-depth understanding of the risks that the organisations are facing. i Financial Condition Reporting will certainly not come without costs; these could either be the cost of implementing the internal models as this will inevitably require the use of qualified actuaries or the capital required as dictated by the prescribed model as this is an industry average. Both costs can result in some companies merging or some being bought out and this could change the scales of competition within the short-term insurance industry.

Full text
Abstract:
D. Ing.
The key objective of this thesis is clearly stated in its comprehensive title. In today’s fast moving, turbulent and highly competitive world, high tech companies and engineering-based organizations struggle possibly more than other businesses with the seemingly irrational, analogical events when most people in such organizations are rational, highly analytical persons. Value creation is one of the key objectives of modern high tech companies. Hence, the achievement of this ideal within the constraints and consideration of a myriad of factors requires a different approach and implies an ongoing transformation process which is not always based on rational aspects alone. If such a transformation is to be sustainable and takes place in a globally competitive framework, the approach has to be holistic and it has to consider many additional factors which tend to be considered as soft in the analytical world of high tech. The thesis formulates a management and leadership model which includes both the soft and hard factors in a comprehensive and collaborative manner. The model lends itself to understand and judiciously manipulate the dynamics of the high tech global business environment for sustained competitive advantage. The model recognizes and enables the manager and leader to address the many issues confronting them daily by giving a new strategic perspective with the help of sub-models. These sub-models form the anchors whereby a complex situation can be managed reasonably, effectively and hopefully wisely too. The suggested model is to a large degree independent of time and industry-space and is considered valid for a long time to come. Although aimed at providing a guideline at executive level of management in the high tech environment the suggested model is by no means limited to engineering nor is it limited to high tech companies. The framework and model anchors developed, are equally valid in other complexity-prone industries as can be confirmed by the author’s wide international practical experience in a number of industries, from Banking, Service provides, Health Systems, e-commerce, Petro-Chemical and others.

After strict examination, Taiming has won the recognition of the Insurance Bureau, Financial Supervisory Commission, Executive Yuan for its outstanding performance and becomes the first insurance broker company that has registered as an emerging-stock company in Taiwan. In this study, how Taiming Assurance Broker Co., Ltd. makes use of its advantages and avoids the disadvantages to create and enhance its business competitiveness in the severe competition with other traditional life insurance companies has been thoroughly explored. Based on the literature review, this study adopted the case study approach and further collected relevant literature in combination with the in-depth interviews of five suitable objects to be the source of exploration and analysis. The important conclusions obtained are listed as follows: 1. Insurance broker companies have various factors that include external environmental impacts and internal environment needs to overcome to increase the market share by business volume. 2. There are advantages and disadvantages existed in the domestic life insurance industry, and insurance broker companies can make good use of the advantages and overcome the disadvantages to create even greater business advantages. 3. The key reason that insurance broker companies have rapidly risen in the domestic insurance marketing channels is that they can exactly customize the proper products for their customers from their perspective and all policy problems can be solved by only one broker. 4. There is a big chance for insurance broker companies to become the main trend of marketing channels in the life insurance market. New insurance broker companies must engage in an inter- and cross-industry alliance and actively set the layout in Asia and in China to open up a bigger market.

Lamprecht, Norman. "Analysis of the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) as a promotional tool for the South African automotive industry in the global automotive environment." Diss., 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2378.

Abstract:
The Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP) was implemented on 1 September 1995 in the context of the country's political and economic liberalisation and the major structural shift in government policy and the trade regime. In an intensely competitive global environment, the strategies of a few dominant motor vehicle manufacturers, mainly operating from the Triad regions of North America, Europe and Japan, impact significantly on the developments of the global automotive industry. Over the past decade the small, highly protected and inwardly focused South African automotive industry has become fully integrated in the global strategies of foreign parent companies. As South Africa's leading manufacturing sector, the automotive sector is contributing significantly to the country's economy in terms of exports, investment, employment and the gross domestic product. The objective of the study was to establish and measure the relevance and value of the MIDP as a promotional tool in the global automotive environment by capturing the responses and perceptions of direct automotive industry exporters and stakeholders for * the South African automotive industry in general, and * the companies forming part of the empirical survey. To satisfy the objectives of the study, the research methodology incorporated an extensive primary and secondary research phase (qualitative and quantitative). A structured empirical survey was used to collect the primary data. The survey data were captured and processed by the Bureau for Market Research (BMR), Unisa. The main findings of the study are that: * The promotional relevance and value of the MIDP as a promotional tool is embedded in the programme's ability to trigger interest in the South African automotive industry, to generate business and to attract investments. * The MIDP is successful in contributing to the automotive sector's international competitiveness and is therefore a very important promotional tool for convincing foreign parent companies to consider South Africa as an investment destination. * The South African automotive industry would not be able to cope with global competition without the MIDP. * Different factors impact on the business operations of the South African automotive industry in general and the specific company in particular and the factors are viewed differently by the selected groups based on their demographic details. The process of trade liberalisation is forcing many South African companies to encounter both intensified competition and new forms of competition. The South African government's target of a 6 percent economic growth rate by 2010 will largely depend on the ongoing successes achieved in priority sectors such as the domestic automotive sector.
