Neves, Ana Sofia da Silva. "Innovation and international competitiveness: Portuguese companies versus Latvian companies." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/16493.
Full textThe European strategy for 2020 considers the innovation as one of the main features to boost the progress towards a competitive and sustainable European economy. Assuming that innovation contributes for competitiveness, the current work intends to focus on the relation between innovation and international competitiveness of two European small economies, namely Portugal and Latvia. There is evidence that small economies are characterized by higher trade liberalization and higher international competitiveness. To better understand the relation amongst innovation and international competitiveness, within the scope of the two small economies under study, it’s performed a comparative analysis between both countries and employed a statistical and sectorial analysis, with a shift-share analysis. Even under harsh economic conditions, innovation occurred in both countries. The results show that the international competitiveness of Portugal is related with its expenditures on R&D and patent applications while the Latvian international competitiveness is evidenced only with expenditures on R&D. The most internationally competitive sector of is the other manufactured goods and in Latvia is the food, drinks and tobacco sectors. Both countries show evidence of international competitiveness’ potential in the sector of transport and machinery equipment.

Full textIdentifying the variables that positively or negatively impacts a company´s Cost of Capital or, in a general way, a country´s Cost of Capital has been the objective of much research published in the academic environment in the last few years. The appearance of the Capital Asset Pricing Model - CAPM in the early ´60s could be seen as a milestone inasmuch as, after its publications, various studies, such as those performed by Gitman e Forrester (1977), Gitman e Mercurio (1982), Moore e Reichert (1983), Trahan e Gitman (1995), Bruner (1998), Block (2000) e Graham e Harvey (2001 e 2002), challenge the investment decision-making practices and cost of capital estimates in US corporations. The variables that affect the profitability of a determined industry were more closely studied after the publication of the Five Competitive Forces Model (Porter, 1980). Based on the huge complexities that involves those issues, and which arose during this research, one of the principle questions to be answered became: what are the variables that influence the total Cost of Capital available for a company, in any given country, in light of the fact that it may be very different from country to country? Upon analyzing the data, we see that, in emerging countries, the cost of capital is related to Employment, Education, Basic Infrastructure, International Investment and International Trade, while in developed countries, it is related to Basic Infrastructure, Prices, Public Finance and Managerial Practices.
Meyer, Petrus Gerhardus. "Determinants of credit risk mitigation in lending to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) companies, from a banker's perspective." Diss., Unisa, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/163.
Full textA research report presented to the Graduate School of Business Leadership, University of South Africa
The previous political dispensation limited black people’s participation in the South African economy. Poor credit records, lack of training, resulting in skills and capacity gaps further limited entry into the lending market. These aspects are considered the main limitations in obtaining finance for the Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). This research report focuses on how credit risk can be mitigated by commercial banks in lending to Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) companies in the medium to large market. Exploratory research was conducted using various methods to achieve methodological triangulation. These methods consisted of a literature review, interviewing experts in the field and case studies. A qualitative research approach was followed. It was found that the lack of own contribution and security were still prevalent in the medium to large market, but the quality of management (little training and skills) was deemed not to be a limitation as suitable credit risk mitigants were identified. No credit risk mitigants were identified to mitigate poor credit records. It is postulated that by adopting and applying the identified credit risk mitigants, commercial banks can increase their success rate in lending to BEE companies. It will further assist in the transformation of black people and compliance with the Financial Services Charter. It is recommended that a similar study be conducted in the agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing industry. The reasons why BEE companies applications are declined could also be investigated. Further studies could also explore other external factors such as economical, legal and social that could have an influence on the funding of BEE companies.

This study analyses firms' compliance with disclosure requirements of the International Accounting Standard 37 (IAS 37 - provisions, contingent liabilities and contingent assets), through a thorough examination of the 20-F Reports of 91 foreign companies for the fiscal year of 2016. These companies have in common that they are foreign firms cross-listed in the U.S. stock exchanges NASDAQ or NYSE, they report under IFRS both locally and in the U.S., and they are from 14 countries that obligate the adoption of IFRS for locally traded companies. I measured disclosure compliance levels for each required item and overall, by calculating two indexes, one stricter and another more tolerant in treating omissions on the non-applicability of an item to the company. My hypothesis confronts the assertions that the legal tradition to which a company is submitted influences its disclosure level. An important finding is that the enforcement of the SEC regulations is what mostly explains the level of disclosure, rather than the legal tradition of the firm’s country of origin. I found that cross-listed companies under the same enforcement of the SEC, do not differ in their level of disclosure, regardless of the legal tradition of their country of origin. No statistically significant differences were found between the disclosure level for companies from countries with common law tradition, compared to countries with civil law roots. Additionally, the study concluded that the local financial markets development and the local regulation of the security exchanges are variables that significantly influence the level of disclosure.

Full textThe aim of the first study was to analyze the chain of wheat seed production in Rio Grande do Sul from the forces acting on it. For the analysis, it was used the methodology of the five competitive forces: competition within the industry, new entrants, substitute products, bargaining power of suppliers, and bargaining power of buyers. Initially, a survey of secondary data from various sources was done, among which the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), the Association of Seed Producers of Rio Grande do Sul (Apassul), the National Supply Company (CONAB) and the Brazilian Association of Wheat Industry (ABITRIGO). The study showed that there is great imbalance within the forces that act on the chain of wheat seed production in Rio Grande do Sul, with the bargaining power of buyers making strong pressure on all parts of the chain, even where there is no direct commercial relationships. The second study aimed at, from the implementation of the Plant Cultivars Protection Law (LPC), and the Seeds and Seedlings Law (LS), quantifying the wheat seed companies of Rio Grande do Sul based on their scale of production, relations with class entities, plant breeding companies, and innovation, and to compare current data with the data obtained before the consolidation of the LPC and before the LS became effective. This study was done using secondary data generated from the database of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. The study showed that the distribution of seed companies in relation to the scale of production has changed very little since 2002. Companies that produce up to 460 tons continue to predominate in the market. Regarding innovation, the study showed that the number of cultivars in the portfolio of seed companies is directly proportional to its size, and that every company, excluding the very young, is seeking new cultivars for their portfolios. Larger firms access more new cultivars because of their scale.

Full textThe construction and real estate industry has a major impact on society; financially, environmentally as well as socially. However, the industry is characterized by being inefficient, conservative and lagging behind in digital development. Studies have shown that real estate companies are an important key player in driving the industry's digital development forward. It has also been emphasized that real estate companies' strategy work is of great importance to enable this development. Working strategically is described as a crucial factor in enabling companies to survive and be competitive in the market. Strategies are described at three different organizational levels, which are at corporate group, a business or an operational level. Research has shown that great benefits can be seen upon interconnecting the strategies between the different organizational levels. This makes it easier to coordinate strategic work and thus eases working towards the same processes and goals. One strategy that concerns the use of digital technology is the functional strategy IT strategy. When it is linked to the business strategy, a digital strategy is created. Digital strategy, in other words, can be described by the fact that digital technology is integrated with business activities. A digital strategy is highlighted as an important driver for driving digital development forward. The following thesis work aims to investigate how a digital strategy can substantiate competitiveness and value creation by examining how real estate companies' business strategy and IT strategy are aligned. The study also investigates the overall work of real estate companies to develop digitally. The study is based on a qualitative method, where data was obtained from semi-structured interviews from two real estate companies. The companies are referred to as Real Estate Company A and Real Estate Company B. Both companies are primarily focused on commercial properties, with long-term ownership. The respondents from the interviews are head of operations, project managers, assistant project managers and digitization experts. The study's results indicate that there is a higher awareness of the real estate companies' business strategy, as compared to strategies of digital work. Regarding the connection between the use of digital technology and the business activities, it is clear that the preexisting conditions are good, but not clearly stated and conscious within the companies, which makes them perceived as non-existent. The conclusions drawn from the study are that strategical work is seen as extremely complex, hence high demands are placed on the structure of the work. For digital technology to be integrated into business activities, the study shows that everything is ultimately about being able to demonstrate a direct benefit. At present, the digital strategy does not support competitiveness and value creation within real estate companies to the extent that it has the ability to, as it has not been able to demonstrate a direct benefit. However, it can be questioned whose benefit drives the real estate companies' digital development. Is it the customer who demands a benefit? Or is it the companies that needs to offer the customer something that creates benefits, before the customer has demanded it himself? This can be seen as a complex paradox, which may be an explanation for the real estate companies' digital development being slowed down.

Full textThe globalization of the economy and business consolidates a new context of fierce competition, changing markets, where you can no longer hear the past to guide the decisions of the now much less of the future. With that come the crisis, the competitors rapidly change its manner to compete, new concepts are applied in management and business organization, new technologies appears with lifecycles each time shorter, making obsolete the ones in use. In the business sectors most affected by the new environment, where increased competition is more present and visible, seems to be increasingly difficult for one company alone to face the competition. Then we see some evidence that companies are seeking other forms of management and performance to compete, including even the competition in conjunct. In other words, a form of competition of companies in which they join other companies to compete in the market with others agglomerates of companies. This union has been evidenced by different formats of supra-companies. Among these formats we can highlight the business clusters and business networks, in which governance transcends the boundaries of a single company, reaching the entire agglomerate. The concern of this study was to determine if, within groups of companies named in the literature as clusters, exist or not among the companies in it, some of them that are also guided by supra-companies strategies of networks business, not just by cluster strategies. This was verified by this research, two clusters of important business in their countries, the Port wine, in the Douro Valley, Portugal, and the wines of Vinhedos Valley, in Serra Gaúcha, Brazil, we found companies oriented with a dual strategy, in other words, by cluster strategy and business network strategy. And this discover is new in the literature of supra-companies entities, because those entities themselves are not of very recent scholarship. Another concern of this research was to verify if the fact of companies driven by a dual strategy had contributed to an increase in their competitiveness, what the study also confirmed

Abstract The special steel industry has been developed in Taiwan more than 30 years. Now it is a well-developed industry. With the development of this industry, a complete headstream, midstream and downstream process system has been built. With restricted lands, Taiwan is crowded with people. This limits the development of the special steel market in Taiwan. The companies of Taiwan, therefore, have to develop the export market and confront with the competition of other international companies as well. The special steel industry in China, in particular, is an extreme threat to that in Taiwan. Taiwan’s companies, as a result, should ponder how to face the competition of China and other international industries. This thesis attempts to explore the operation of the special steel industry in Taiwan and the influence of China’s steel industry, which has been sprung up recently, on Taiwan’s market. Also, it focuses on the strategies which Taiwan’s companies adopt to face the international competition. With regard to the research of steel industry, most of the studies concentrate on the discussion of carbon steel. Little attention is paid to special steel. Therefore, this thesis aims to do some research on several special steel companies in Taiwan to examine how they figure out the strategies to administrate their companies. First, the thesis offers a brief overview of the development and market of the special steel industry. To understand the viewpoints and strategies of competitiveness, the documents of competition and competitive advantage, the industry correlation reports and research material will be further evaluated and the in-depth interview of qualitative research will be held. The subjects of this research are the fourteen financial holding companies established nationwide around 2003, and 2003 as a reference point, starting from beginning of 1997 until end of 2008, total twelve years. In reference to IMF 2007 report, it mentioned that H Index, developed by Panzar and Rosse (1987) and HHI Index, developed by Bikker and Haaf (2000) were used to analyze the ability to compete of a company, before and after the merge. After analysis in this essay, the ability to compete with others after merge is much higher than of it before merge. Increased H Index and decreased HHI Index show the market concentration ratio of finance market does not raise, and the size of the company should be continuously extended. At the same time, the after-merge finance holding companies also show the negative effects, and market concentration ratio does not raise evidently. The after-merge finance holding companies should do their best to resolve the problems, in order to raise the ability to compete with others.

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry in Taiwan has started to apply modern production equipment in mass-production of commercial commodities since 1960. Meanwhile, the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations have been initiated as guidelines for international pharmaceutical companies. The GMP regulations have been launched in Taiwan since 1980. As announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2018, all the Taiwanese pharmaceutical manufacturers of concentrated herbal extracts should complete the four steps of the validation process within 8 years from 2020. However, the timeline of implementing new regulations on TCM pharmaceutical companies has not yet been announced. In the near future, the regulations on the TCM pharmaceutical companies will transit from GMP to GMP validation. In the study, in-depth interviews were undertaken with seven managers, who were recruited from five TCM pharmaceutical companies of different scales and were empowered to make critical decisions. The subjects were asked to express their opinions regarding the issue of applying GMP validation to the TCM pharmaceutical industry and its effects on the industrial competitiveness. As shown by the results, there was discrepancy among 7 respondents regarding the issue. However, they made the similar prediction that the number of TCM pharmaceutical company would decrease after the implementation of the new regulations. In addition, they all possessed the same understanding that the payments from the national health insurance were too low for traditional Chinese medicine. However, the interviewees expressed different opinions on various issues related to GMP validation, such as future investment, professional personnel fostering, domestic and international marketing, marketing strategy transformation and consumer confidence. The diverse opinions on GMP validation might arise as a result of the company size, leading products, future products and sales channels. With regard to the possible effects of GMP validation on TCM companies and the improvement of the industrial competitiveness, the study used SWOT analysis with the aid of the data collected from in-depth interviews to study the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats confronting TCM companies and the association of GMP validation with the industrial competitiveness. Some useful information was also provided to peer TCM companies and the government. Keywords: Chinese Medicine pharmaceutical Companies, GMP, Validation, Competitiveness, SWOT

Full textFinancial Condition Reporting is the new proposed risk-based approach to calculating the solvency requirements of the short-term insurance companies in South Africa by the regulator, the Financial Services Board. A risk-based approach to calculating capital requirements is currently the most popular in the developed nations with the United States of America being the champion of this. Australia has implemented its own version of the risk-based capital approach and the United Kingdom has implemented ICAS which is a prelude to Solvency II to be implemented by the European Union. It is unknown how Financial Condition Reporting in South Africa will affect the levels of competitiveness of the short-term insurance industry. Qualitative study was done firstly to develop an understanding of the regulation of financial services and secondly to get an appreciation of how the regulation of financial services affects the levels of competition within the industry. Due to the fact that different people (organisations) have different views on the proposed financial reporting, qualitative data methods provide participants with an opportunity to discuss their reasons. The intention of the researcher was to get as much information as possible from the interviews and hence one of the data collection techniques employed was the use of a tape recorder.. Generally all participants indicated that Financial Condition Reporting was more than welcome in the short-term insurance industry. It was evident that this will force the board of directors of short-term insurance companies to be involved in the risk management of the organisation. In turn this will allow an in-depth understanding of the risks that the organisations are facing. i Financial Condition Reporting will certainly not come without costs; these could either be the cost of implementing the internal models as this will inevitably require the use of qualified actuaries or the capital required as dictated by the prescribed model as this is an industry average. Both costs can result in some companies merging or some being bought out and this could change the scales of competition within the short-term insurance industry.
Winzker, Dietmar Hans. "A holistic management model for the transformation of high technology engineering companies for sustained value creation and global competitiveness." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/2194.
Full textThe key objective of this thesis is clearly stated in its comprehensive title. In today’s fast moving, turbulent and highly competitive world, high tech companies and engineering-based organizations struggle possibly more than other businesses with the seemingly irrational, analogical events when most people in such organizations are rational, highly analytical persons. Value creation is one of the key objectives of modern high tech companies. Hence, the achievement of this ideal within the constraints and consideration of a myriad of factors requires a different approach and implies an ongoing transformation process which is not always based on rational aspects alone. If such a transformation is to be sustainable and takes place in a globally competitive framework, the approach has to be holistic and it has to consider many additional factors which tend to be considered as soft in the analytical world of high tech. The thesis formulates a management and leadership model which includes both the soft and hard factors in a comprehensive and collaborative manner. The model lends itself to understand and judiciously manipulate the dynamics of the high tech global business environment for sustained competitive advantage. The model recognizes and enables the manager and leader to address the many issues confronting them daily by giving a new strategic perspective with the help of sub-models. These sub-models form the anchors whereby a complex situation can be managed reasonably, effectively and hopefully wisely too. The suggested model is to a large degree independent of time and industry-space and is considered valid for a long time to come. Although aimed at providing a guideline at executive level of management in the high tech environment the suggested model is by no means limited to engineering nor is it limited to high tech companies. The framework and model anchors developed, are equally valid in other complexity-prone industries as can be confirmed by the author’s wide international practical experience in a number of industries, from Banking, Service provides, Health Systems, e-commerce, Petro-Chemical and others.

Taiming Assurance Broker Co., Ltd., founded in 2002, is an insurance broker company that focuses on life insurance and property insurance. In response to the changes in the domestic environment for the development of insurance, more than ten executives from foreign life insurance companies decided to establish Taiming Assurance Broker Co., Ltd., implying the great “timing” they had chosen. With flexible business strategies and years of efforts, Taiming has been deeply trusted and supported by their customers. After strict examination, Taiming has won the recognition of the Insurance Bureau, Financial Supervisory Commission, Executive Yuan for its outstanding performance and becomes the first insurance broker company that has registered as an emerging-stock company in Taiwan. In this study, how Taiming Assurance Broker Co., Ltd. makes use of its advantages and avoids the disadvantages to create and enhance its business competitiveness in the severe competition with other traditional life insurance companies has been thoroughly explored. Based on the literature review, this study adopted the case study approach and further collected relevant literature in combination with the in-depth interviews of five suitable objects to be the source of exploration and analysis. The important conclusions obtained are listed as follows: 1. Insurance broker companies have various factors that include external environmental impacts and internal environment needs to overcome to increase the market share by business volume. 2. There are advantages and disadvantages existed in the domestic life insurance industry, and insurance broker companies can make good use of the advantages and overcome the disadvantages to create even greater business advantages. 3. The key reason that insurance broker companies have rapidly risen in the domestic insurance marketing channels is that they can exactly customize the proper products for their customers from their perspective and all policy problems can be solved by only one broker. 4. There is a big chance for insurance broker companies to become the main trend of marketing channels in the life insurance market. New insurance broker companies must engage in an inter- and cross-industry alliance and actively set the layout in Asia and in China to open up a bigger market.
