Rosli, Mohamed. "Competitive positioning strategies for Malaysian wooden furniture businesses." Thesis, University of Hull, 1998. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:3810.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is concerned with the applications of strategic management concepts and practices by Malaysian wooden furniture businesses in managing linkages in the value web and formulating competitive positioning strategies. For the purpose of the study, interviews were held with managers of the selected Malaysian wooden furniture businesses, and their key distributors/retailers and suppliers. The finding of the study shows that the strategic group concept is an important tool for understanding strategy, competition and opportunities within an industry. In the study, the geographical dimensions and the product dimensions of the market are used as the strategic dimensions for forming strategic groups (at the business level) of the selected Malaysian wooden furniture businesses: SG I (businesses in the low end segment of the domestic market); SG2 (businesses in the medium segment of the domestic market); SG3 businesses in the low end segment of the international market); and SG4 (businesses in the medium segment of the international market). In terms of the management of linkages in the value web (in respect of selection criteria and channel relationships), the study demonstrates that it varies according to strategic groups. Specifically, greater variation is observed along the product dimensions than the geographical dimensions of the market. Meanwhile, it is observed that there are differences between the way businesses manage linkages in the downstream value web (with distributors/retailers) and upstream value web (with suppliers). As for the businesses' perceptions of competitors (in terms of the businesses' view about competition and categories of competitors considered), greater variation is observed along the product dimensions than the geographical dimensions of the market. However, most businesses (irrespective of their strategic group membership) appear to give low attention to competitors and to have no clear approach for organising competitor analysis. In the formulation of competitive positioning strategies, the study shows that the activities undertaken and approaches considered (in respect of defining markets determining the key factors for success, identifying sources of sustainable competitive advantage formulating competitive strategies and developing positioning themes) vary more along the product dimensions than the geographical dimensions of the market. Although the activities undertaken and approaches considered by members of SG4 are broader that those of other strategic groups, they are not fully adequate as certain factors in the external environment have not been explicitly considered. Hence, it is suggested that the rotating wheel framework. which is based on pull-factor and push-factor approaches, should be considered by Malaysian wooden furniture businesses for the formulation of competitive positioning strategies. The distinctive characteristics of the rotating wheel framework are: an integration of concepts from the strategic management and marketing disciplines; an integration ofthe competitive forces perspective and the resource-based view perspective within the field of strategic management; a broadened concept of environmental analysis, and a dynamic analysis ofthe competitive environment. As regards the measurement of businesses' competitive advantage. the study reveals that the added value concept offers not just an alternative, but an important measure of businesses' performance, particularly in terms of their ability to add value. Specifically, the study shows that the added value contribution of businesses varies according to strategic groups: members of SG4 add greater value to their inputs than those of members of SG3, who in turn add more value than those of members of SG 1. Finally, recommendations (in respect of management of linkages in the value web, formulation of competitive positioning strategies and measurement of businesses' performance) are made for the consideration of Malaysian wooden furniture businesses and the government.

Foster, S. "Making sense of e-HRM : technological frames, value creation and competitive advantage." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/4511.

Full text
Abstract:
A wide range of Human Resources (HR) processes and information can now be managed and devolved to line managers and employees using e-HRM (‘electronic Human Resource Management’). E-HRM has been defined as “An umbrella term covering all possible integration mechanisms and contents between HRM and information technologies, aiming at creating value within and across organisations for targeted employees and management.” (Bondarouk & Ruel, 2009, p.507). Contemporary e-HRM technologies contain powerful functionality that can support organisations in reducing the cost and improving the quality of Human Resource service delivery, as well as enabling higher productivity and providing strategic capability. The aim of this dissertation is to explore why the development of e-HRM has been relatively immature, given that organisations tend to take an ‘automating’ approach that focuses primarily on administrative efficiency. The central thesis is that future development of e-HRM depends on two factors; firstly, that stronger links between e-HRM and competitive advantage at the organisational level must be defined and exploited; and secondly that shared frames of reference with regard to technology are critical to gaining the support of investors in e-HRM. The dissertation explores the wider context of e-HRM and its relationship to contemporary themes such as HR transformation, service delivery models, the growth of the internet and changing employee and managerial workplace expectations. Various definitions of e-HRM are explored, together with a literature review that categorises and summarises e-HRM literature over a twenty-one year period, concluding that there has been inadequate focus on understanding how e-HRM creates value. The dissertation makes a key contribution to practice through the e-HRM Value Model, a framework for defining, understanding and articulating how e-HRM creates organisational value. Its focus is on the outcomes of e-HRM rather than its characteristics, proposing that only three forms of outcomes can be derived from e-HRM: Operational HR cost reduction, improved people management / productivity and increased strategic capability. It represents a means of defining not only the value outcomes of e-HRM, but also the linkages between value potential, value conversion and value outcomes, providing a practical framework for defining the linkages between e-HRM and competitive advantage, as well as the basis for a diagnostic tool. The dissertation makes a contribution to knowledge through the analysis and subsequent synthesis of a wide-ranging literature review and interviews with fortysix managers and line managers across fifteen organisations that were planning for or had implemented e-HRM. It concludes with a series of proposed reasons for the slow progress towards greater strategic use of e-HRM, based on a technological frames approach with regard to the Nature of Technology, Technology in Use and Technology Strategy. The dissertation argues that unless HR professionals are themselves able to make sense of e-HRM and articulate the benefits in terms of competitive advantage, e-HRM development is likely to remain immature. Further research opportunities to develop and test the model are identified, together with an assessment of the implications for e-HRM management.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the Competitive Intelligence (CI) by itself as a potential source of competitive advantage, based upon the Resource Based View (RBV) framework. Therefore, the main concepts of the available literature were organized in the following sequence in order to support the research: strategic management, strategic resources, RBV main concepts, competitive advantage, strategic resources main characteristics and competitive intelligence. The research method employed in this study was exploratory qualitative descriptive, making use of deep interviews guided by a semi structured script. In total, six executives in charge of CI functions from different companies were interviewed. It is relevant to highlight that none of these companies were competitors whatsoever, in order to keep the proper protection and privacy of their competitive information. Content analysis method was selected to analyze the obtained data (BARDIN,2006). The main result identified was the impossibility of considering CI by itself as a source of competitive advantage from the RBV perspective. The main explanation is that CI does not fit into all of the Barney and Hesterly (2007) VRIO (Value, Rarity, Imitability,Organization) aspects at the same time and conditions such model has served as a basis to evaluate CI as a possible strategic resource. However, there were indications that CI could be considered rare, difficult to imitate, and dependent on organizational conditions to maximize its potential. Notwithstanding, there were no indications that CI could generate value, especially to the customer. This aspect is tightly connected to the competitive advantage concept herein adopted and it is vital in fulfilling this research main goal.

Abstract:
Motivated by the lack of models that can bring a general preparation formula for developing competitive intelligence in Trade Show, the authors researched in a theoretical database to develop a model that can bring a general vision for a company that wants to start to organize the personnel to gather competitive intelligence in trade show events.          Furthermore, was discovered that not many firms do actually realize the opportunities they have to acquire competitive intelligence in trade shows, that way the model was developed to facilitate the process.         The discovering of the research pointed Socialization as well as relationship building and strengthening were the main channels to acquire information. In addition, Trade Shows create a rich environment where most of the stakeholders are present and also willing to share knowledge and information, creating an even more favorable place to develop this kind of intelligence.         The model presented takes in consideration the company’s stakeholder, and how to allocate personnel in booths and in extensive research around the area, it also classifies the visitors and attendees in different groups, facilitating the organizing process to understand and explore more easily and efficiently the Trade Show. The models also suggest approaches to each group in order to don’t invest resources in an ineffective way.

Burton-Taylor, Sarah. "The management of firm specific resources as a source of competitive advantage." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/123.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is about helping managers identify and enhance the idiosyncratic firm resources required for delivering superior perceived use value to customers. Specifically, the research has focused on the organisational knowledge required for routinised service delivery, and has operationalised this organisational knowledge as activities. Project 1 was a comparative study involving observation and interviews in two similar but differentially performing financial services organisations in order to identify the activities involved in service delivery and the differences between the two operations. Project 2 identified customers’ perceptions of value through customer interviews, and then mapped the links between these and the service delivery activities identified in Project 1. Project 3 involved a clinical inquiry intervention aiming to encourage and leverage the firm specific resource of inter-team coordination to enhance the delivery of customer value. The research has confirmed the role of firm specific resources as a source of competitive advantage, and has demonstrated a link with customers’ dimensions of perceived use value. In this study, effective inter-team coordination is identified as the firm specific strategic resource that appears to enable effective service delivery as perceived by customers, through the sharing of knowledge and interpretations, and the development of service process innovation. Many of these coordination activities are discretionary rather than prescribed, with implications for management practice. From this research, a framework has been developed for considering and managing firm specific sources of advantage at the detailed operational level. This is a micro level approach that makes specific links between the customer experience and internal activities, through identifying internal and external competitiveness factors, mapping the ‘inside-outside’ connections, and achieving alignment between internal activities and customer perceptions of value.

Elshaer, Ibrahim Abdelhamid. "The relationship between quality management and competitive advantage : an empirical study of the Egyptian hotel industry." Thesis, University of Hull, 2012. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6069.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the resource based view (RBV) of the firm, quality management (QM) is one of the sources the firm can use to generate competitive advantage (CA). Although QM and CA have widely attracted the attention of both academics and practitioners, the link between these two concepts has rarely been examined in the literature, especially in service industry. Additionally, among those few studies that investigated the relationship between QM and CA, there is contradictory evidence on which QM practices generate CA. Thus, this study examines the impact of QM on CA in the hotels industry, in order to identify which QM practices generate CA. Based on an extensive review of the literature on QM and CA, valid and reliable definitions were formulated for both concepts, and then a conceptual framework was developed to illustrate the relationships between the research variables. Data obtained from a survey of 384 four and five star hotels in Egypt is used to test the impact of QM on CA. A total of 300 responses were obtained. Twelve uncompleted questionnaires were removed, leaving 288 usable questionnaires and yielding a response rate of 75 %. All questionnaires were completed by the hotel general managers. Three main data analysis techniques were employed: exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modelling (SEM). Three models are employed in CFA to test the dimensional structure of QM. These models include a model that allows all factors to be freely correlated (oblique factor model), a model where all factors are correlated because they all measure one higher order factor (higher order factor model), and a model where all indicators are employed to test if they measure only one construct. The results of CFA provide solid statistical evidence that affirm the multidimensionality of the QM construct and contradict other studies that employed QM as a unidimensional construct. These results assist in resolving the problems that might arise from the lack of clarity in the literature concerning the dimensional structure of QM. The SEM results affirm that the soft QM practices such as top management leadership (TML), employee management (EM), customer focus (CF), and supplier management (SM) directly improve the hotel financial performance but the hard QM practices such as process management (PM) and quality data and reporting (QD&R) do not. However, two quality management practices, TML and SM, are found to distinguish those hotels that have CA from those hotels that have not. Therefore, these results can help hotel managers to reallocate the hotel resources to implement those QM practices that can improve the hotel financial performance and generate CA. Finally, this study would benefit if these models are tested with an alternative data set. This study also suffered from a limitation common to survey research and SEM. The current study survey, due to time and money constraints, is a cross sectional sample at one specific point in time. As a result, while causal relationships can be inferred, they cannot be strictly proven. Causal inferences are stronger with longitudinal studies.

Herbane, Brahim. "Resources, autonomy and strategy : perceptions of competitive advantage in the UK automotive components industry." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/13261.

Full text
Abstract:
Theory building in strategic management has traditionally suffered from strong demarcation lines. The case of the resource-based view of firm (RBV) which has emerged as an alternative approach to industry-based explanations of how organisations develop and sustain competitive advantage, particularly demonstrates this divide. Since then, these alternative views of competitive advantage have often been portrayed as mutually exclusive antagonists. This study sets out to examine the perceptions of strategic managers in the UK automotive components industry in relation to these two competing schools of thought which advocate advantage through resources (RBV) or advantage through residence (industry approaches). This industry has been chosen due to the clear potential for industry structure and internal competencies to influence competitive advantage. Using quantitative techniques, data from senior managers is analysed in order to establish the extent to which the views of industry practitioners converge or diverge with the theoretical or anecdotal offerings of the strategy literature. The findings of this thesis suggest that a complex hybrid of perceptions tends to prevail among respondents from the industry. This can be attributed to historical, operational and supply chain factors. Furthermore, the study finds that the lexicon of competitive advantage and the priorities of resources advocated in the literature are not shared by strategists in the industry. Accordingly, the study finds, strategic management theory in relation to the resource-based view requires further research using the methodology developed in this thesis as a foundation.

Abstract:
Based on the Resource Based View of the Firm (RBV), this study had the objective of identifying, assessing and analyzing the different resources (tangibles and intangibles) and capabilities found in the furniture industry of Bento Gonçalves, at Rio Grande do Sul (state that accounts for more than 20% of national production and about 30% of total furniture exports, and whose largest industrial pole is the Bento Gonçalves one). Beginning with a theoretical review of the RBV key concepts, such as of resources and capabilities, this study looked for associating the attainment of sustainable competitive advantage to a correct determination of strategy, based on the development and on the combination of the firm’s resources which are valuable and unique to the market. This work has a relevance either theoretical as practical, in the way that it looks for expanding RBV application and considering a framework for identification and assessment of resources and capabilities. Having an exploratory and qualitative nature, the research method applied was a multiple case study. Four companies from Bento Gonçalves furniture sector have been studied (a big one, one average and two small companies) and the main outcomes were: it is possible to identify all the types of resources, since the “classical” tangible ones, until the assets of registered trade mark and patents, and the competences like the employees know-how. The identified and analyzed capabilities had shown that the way to reach a sustainable competitive advantage is independent from the company’s size and from the market where it acts. The study conclusions point to a gradual change of emphasis from the tangible resource to the intangible one in the contemporary market.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of Born Globals in particular to the internationalization process has been highlighted by many scholars. The insufficient of the existing researches to the ability of Born Globals going international since their inceptions with limited resources encouraged us to study more in-depth. Resource-based View (RBV) and firm‟s competitive advantage are chosen as the theoretical framework. Three Swedish Born Globals were chosen as case studies, the data was collected by semi-structure and e-mail interviews which within-case and cross-case analysis were applied. The empirical data and analysis draws us to the conclusion that human resource especially entrepreneurs and network are the key firm resources that significantly contribute to Born Globals‟ establishment, internationalization and competitive advantage. However, the finding is highlighted that entrepreneur has a crucial role to both establishment and internationalization stages. Entrepreneur‟s personal network has high contribution when Born Globals is started up while firm‟s network plays more important role at the internationalization stage. By using network, Born Globals gain an easier way to find financial and operating resource. Moreover, entrepreneur‟s capability is the main key resource that creates competitiveness to Born Global firms. Future research suggestions and implications are discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract:
Health market in Rio de Janeiro is in transformation. The more competitive and complex situation generates a moment of uncertainties for managers, who search to readapt their units, stimulated by the challenge of guaranteeing the survival of the institutions. In this context, managers must adapt their management practices with the purpose of turning the health service companies more efficient, capable to fulfill society`s demands and produce a competitive advantage better than the one provided by its competitors. Therefore, this study aims at answering the following question: in the present context, which management practices would lead health service companies to obtain a competitive advantage through the efficient use of its own resources? In order to answer this question, was used the Resource-based view theory as a conceptual base for identifying the resources that generate value to the organizations and how they are managed. It is a descriptive study, since it proposes to present relevant characteristics of such health sector. It may also be characterized as a qualitative research, since it is based on subjective perceptions by members of the analyzed sector over certain events or situations. Research subjects are managers or persons occupying strategic positions in some of the major private hospital and clinics in Rio de Janeiro City. Fifteen persons with this profile have been interviewed. In addition to other aspects, results point out the affiliation to a verticalized network associated to a health plan and the management of the connected unit network, as elements representing a competitive advantage for some companies of the sector. Other relevant factors are the scale gains produced through a more efficient management of the physical resources and through a greater quantity and rotation of beds occupancy. Aspects such as hotel quality and diversification of health plans were identified as requirements for a competitive parity. Factors connected to technology and acquisition systems have shown themselves as sources of temporary advantage.

One of the major concerns of management today is to explain how organizations acquire and sustain their competitive advantage. This study sets out to understand how QG grelhados , a medium-sized company in the fragmented fast food industry, has built up and maintains a position of competitiv e advantage in a market, where low barriers to new entrants generate significant competition. QG grelhados was chosen for the case study because of its prominent position in Goiás’s fast food sector. As a theoretical basis, two different currents, which rely on competing hypotheses and are being seen as complimentary, were used. They are Porter’s Competitive Strategy, which sees a company's position in the industry as the main determinant for its performance, and the Resource-Based View (RBV), which considers the set of resources and capabilities to be a major source of competitive advantage for a company. This study noted that the company's sustainable competitive advantage comes from both its position in the fast food industry, as well as its set of resources and capabilities acquired throughout its twenty-nine years in the market. The QG lower price in the industry and its capacity in managing the supply chain suggest that QG follows a cost oriented strategy. This strategy is supported by its brand name, by a set of human and strategic resources which continuously indicate new ways to compete in order to achieve higher performance.

The general idea of this research is to analyze overall firm performance before and after the global financial crisis of 2008. The main question is: What kind of strategies did companies adopt that led to positive business performance after the crisis? Are there any particular competitive advantages that bring better performance in the case of an economic downturn? This research focuses on competitive advantage gained by resource-based view attributes of a product (quality, durability and prestige) and dynamic capabilities (strategic flexibility in product development and technological innovation ability). The economic crisis setting provides a proper background to analyze the competitive advantage strategies in a dynamic, low-probability environment to determine which are most worth adopting in the business world. I employ an OLS regression analysis in order to measure the business performance of 136 Brazilian firms across four years – 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The findings indicate that even though all of the strategic resources and capabilities positively influence firm performance in expansionary periods, only the superior product characteristics are pertinent in surviving an economic downturn.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Negócios Internacionais apresentada à ESTG - Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria.
Why do some firms succeed in exporting while others do not? Export activities are a crucial area of international business but the drivers of superior export performance are not yet well understood. In this study, employing a sample of 52 Portuguese firms, we examine what are the distinctive resources and capabilities associated to superior export performance through the establishment of sustainable competitive advantages. Resource-based view supports the development of explicit hypothesis. Different combinations of export-related resources and capabilities are identified as source of cost, product and service-type advantages and how do these advantages impact economic, strategic and relational dimensions of export performance. The findings of this study have important implications for theory, managers and policymakers. Limitations of the study are considered, and future research directions are identified.

Full text
Abstract:
As a large number of MNEs have entered China and many domestic companies become increasingly competitive, Sino-foreign joint ventures are facing intensified competition in many industries in China. The review of the literature shows that few studies on Sino-foreign joint ventures focus on competitive issues, and most studies tend to examine the issues associated with partnerships. This thesis examines competitive advantage of Sino-British joint ventures in China and explains why some joint ventures have (or have not) achieved competitive advantage. The research developed a multi-perspective framework for analysing competitive advantage of the joint venture. The framework embraces strategic positioning, the resource-based view, partnerships, and location specific factors. The empirical study investigated five cases: AstraZeneca China, ERM China, Shanghai Marconi, GSK Chongqing, and YARACO. The case studies have revealed some salient characteristics of the joint ventures from the differing perspectives. The positioning perspective examines the alignment of activities with the positioning and fit among activities. Partnerships and locational factors are incorporated into the analysis. The analysis from the resource-based is focused on the potential of some critical resources for competitive advantage. The resources embedded in the partnership structure and the local context are likely to be sources of sustainable competitive advantage. The synthesized analysis investigates the relationship between activities and resources of the firm and leads to some theoretical propositions about creating sustainable competitive advantage. The research aims to make contributions to knowledge in the following respects. First, the research draws attention to competitive advantage of the joint venture as a relatively new area for the study. Second, by developing multi-perspective framework, the research can help broaden theoretical perspectives for studying the joint venture and may effect discoveries of new issues. Moreover, the research seeks to contribute to the debate about competitive advantage and strategy through synthesizing positioning and the resource-based view.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to describe how networking can provide competitive advantage to facilitate growth when offering consultancy services toward the public sector. The majority of companies are looking to expand their business due to different reasons. With todays intense competiton on the market it is becoming increasingly important to outperform competitors in order to maintain the current customerbase aswell as it is to gain new businesses. Companies that work toward the public sector have special laws, directives and regulations that have to be taken into account when conducting business. Involvement with networks is based on different reasons, it can be due to gaining new customers, contacts and knowledge to name a few.   The authors have performed a qualitative case study with a focus on two companies. The empirical findings is based on information collected through interviews with these companies and through a quanitative self-completion questionnaire with a sample group of 16 repondents. By analysing the empirical information the authors have concluded that networking activities are important in order to prosper growth. However, there is a lack of networking strategies among the two companies of focus which constraint the firms to get the most out of the networks.

This thesis relates the theory of constraints (TOC) with the resource based view (RBV) and uses its implications as strategy to obtain results and competitive advantage in the process of company management. During the last 30 years, much progress has been made in researching resources and constraints of companies. However, there are still gaps to be explored, such as the alignment of TOC to VBR. This research seeks to minimize this gap. This thesis aims to use the TOC thinking process (TP) as a tool for the management of resources’ constraints, and once aligned with VBR, as a strategy to gain performance and competitive advantage. In order to reach this objective, the research is backed by TOC and VBR theories by exploring the main authors' perspectives and researches, allowing the identification of points of convergence between both theories. The methodology rests on a qualitative and quantitative approach and it is based on a multiple case study in 13 units of the Unimed Vitória Health Cooperative, where it was used data triangulation through direct non-participant observation of interviews with decision-makers and the application of questionnaires to measure the main weaknesses of resources or undesirable effects, making it possible to identify the root problem of the company and the obstacles to a better performance. The results show that by aligning the two theories it was possible to analyze the intensity of weakness of the company's internal resources, to find the main undesirable effects, and to apply the cause-effect logic of the TOC TP, identifying: what to change? for what to change? and how to change? An action plan that allowed to identify the few causes that explain the many symptoms has been drawn up, that is, the constraints of resources that if eliminated or treated will result in gains of results. The research allowed to integrate two fields of knowledge and develop a new strategy to solve problems of restrictions in resources. The alignment between VBR and TOC enhances the use of VBR as a resource management strategy to performance improvement, as it uses TOC TP in the management of resources’ constraints. Managers perceive that the integration between the two theories can improve the management of resources and it represents a better and more accurate strategy for the decision-making process and for obtaining better results in the company.

The increasing competition in today's economy has created the need for organizations to assess the role of human resources management in their practices, since when properly integrated in an organization's strategy can have a significant impact in its performance. Thus, it is possible that organizations develop their human resources to generate sustained competitive advantage over time. To achieve this, it is necessary that organizations have the capability to add value to their productivity, their competencies should be rare and specific, the integration and alignment of human resource management practices should be difficult to imitate as well as their human resources should not be subject to replacement. The main goal of this report is to reiterate the influence of human resources management in the organizational performance and how it can become a way to obtain a competitive advantage. Managers use strategic planning in order to design the ways to get the organizational goals. In a competitive environment the organizations aim to overcome their competitors and to obtain superior financial performance. In order to reach this superior financial performance, the organizations manage their resources so as they can obtain a position of competitive advantage in the marketplace. Thus, the resource management is an important activity in the organizations and the internal analysis is a process that can support this activity. Methods and frameworks to support strategic analyses are no novelty in the business environment. In different intensities these structures of analyses are built up from theoretical knowledge and concepts. In this thesis it is proposed a set of steps to facilitate the strategic competitive planning of organizations. This set of steps was turned into a managerial framework of organizations internal analysis, using the Resource-Advantage Theory as theoretical basis. Thus, the main goal of this thesis was to develop a method, departing from the resource concept, for internal analysis of companies that are embedded in a context of market competition. Exploratory and qualitative research was carried out. Departing from literature review related to the theme, a preliminary method of internal analysis was built then validated and improved by means of collected data from field research. The field research consisted of six case studies with companies working in the area of agrochemicals industry in Brazil. The final version of the internal analysis method is made of six steps. The study contributes theoretically by discussing several concepts related to the Resource-Based Theory and the Resource-Advantage Theory. As a result, the study proposes a way of operationalization of the resource concept (that is a gap observed by some authors). Managerially speaking, the study contributes by providing the administrators with a method of analysis that supports decisions related to organizational resources management.

This present study analyses, under the resource-based view (RBV) and the transaction cost theory (TCT) approach, small and medium import companies operating in the non-durable consumer goods sector in Brazil. The RBV theory focuses on the internal resources owned or accessed by a company that could lead the firm to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage, while the TCT covers the dichotomy of ownership and flexibility of activities and dealing with uncertainty. After gathering information about the macro-environmental context in which the companies are, and the inherent complexities involved, such as exchange rate fluctuation, port infrastructure, freight cost, legislations and bureaucracy, a qualitative phenomenological research was conducted with executives in the sector in order to evaluate their perception of the business and to identify the internal resources each company has at its disposal. Those resources are subject to evaluation using the VRIO framework, which intends to check whether a resource is valuable, rare and easy to imitate. Therefore, it can be classified – or not – as a source of sustainable competitive advantage. Results show that, among small and medium sized companies, there aren’t too many sources of competitive advantage, with few exceptions. The way companies deal with adversities and challenges are similar and, therefore, pricing plays an important role as an important variable while in this business.

Abstract:
The modern financial industry includes fast-changing technology, new regulations, and markets where companies at times find themselves at disadvantage. This study focuses on how organizations can build competitive advantage, particularly by drawing on the open innovation concept. We conceptualize its relationship to competitive advantage as a strategy of using and developing dynamic capabilities in business ecosystems. This view is empirically analysed through qualitative data from four organizational actors in the financial technology (fintech) sector, using semi-structured interviews and a case study approach. The results of the study show that there is a so-called fintech business ecosystem where collaboration and openness generate new opportunities and new innovations. It also shows that the capabilities networking and scanning, investment processes and an open, agile organizational culture are essential to gain advantage of the opportunities in the business ecosystem. In building competitive advantage from open innovation process, these capabilities provide speed and are necessary to find external resources that can effectively be united with internal key resources, creating unique resource combinations. This indicates that companies should focus on activities that enable these capabilities.

Abstract:
The research in this thesis focuses on the intangible resources of organisations. Intangible resources include an organisation's collective knowledge and learning, leadership talent, the values that shape its culture, routines and processes and the collaborative relationships. These intangible resources are known as intellectual capital (IC) because they support organisational activity along with financial and physical capital. Previous research has classified IC into three principle components of human, organisational and relationship capital and has established a link between IC and organisational value. Recent studies have also emphasised the notion of interrelationships between the three components of intellectual capital in developing capabilities that drive value creation. Yet it is often unclear how the various elements interrelate to one another to generate organisational value. This thesis investigates how IC contributes to organisational value creation. Central to this research is the examination of the mechanisms through which IC factors are integrated within organisations in order to develop capabilities. As innovation is widely agreed to be a determinant of organisational value creation, this research adapted and extended the model of intelligence and innovation proposed by Glynn (1996) to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework for empirically examining the synergistic effects of IC. Building upon four major theoretical streams: resource-based view of the firm, innovation theory, intellectual capital theory and organisational capabilities, this research has elaborated the ideas and constructs presented in the original model and de-contextualised them to an intellectual capital perspective. A qualitative, interpretive approach was applied to two in-depth case studies for investigating the intangible resource-base of two knowledge intensive companies. The results were then expanded to a cross-case context in order to compare and contrast the value creating potential of the IC factors. The findings of this research are presented in the form of a descriptive framework that classifies the characteristics of a value creating process. The purpose of the framework is to provide pointers for identifying IC resources and developing capabilities in a way that provides an organisation with sustainable competitive advantage, and thereby, value.

The following dissertation s main objective was to understand the various aspects of customer loyalty as a strategic resource that leads service-providing companies to obtain superior results considering the point of view of their managers. This topic was considered important due to the limited available studies concerning themes related to both loyalty and strategic resources and due to the importance of service-providing sector for the country s economy. This study was based on theoretical concepts related to customers loyalty, resource-based view (RBV) and competitive advantages. This way, an exploratory qualitative research was conducted in the Greater São Paulo area with seven executives from marketing or customer loyalty department of service-providing companies from various segments whose services are targeted to individuals. Data was acquired by in-depth interviews based on a semi-structured interview guide, and content analysis was employed for analysis and data interpretation. The outcome revealed that customer loyalty is an important issue, but that it is not necessarily considered a priority in companies business strategy. It was also identified characteristics of strategic resources in loyalty, such as perceived value, exclusivity and the"empowerment" of opportunities and reduction of threats. However, it was observed that the loyalty strategies are not necessarily non-imitable. Besides, evidence of competitive advantage through customer loyalty was also found, given a general view of the executives that loyalty actions have high potential to increase the customers profitability.

Owing to that the demand of National Defense high quality manpower has substantial effect on the modern war in this new century, so in this study that the National Defense human resources strategies and problems are investigated based on the resource-based competitive advantage perspective. But what kind of resources could be "the core resources"? And what kind of resources could cause a tremendous impact on competitive advantage? These are the key elements that need us to verify and to take into account seriously, before we start to develop any resources strategies. From the core resources'' point of view, we could recheck the National Defense Organizational Resources to find out what the assets of the Organization are, for which could be one of the keystones to the recruitment of the National Defense high quality manpower. And it is more likely to be a fundamental foundation to get our military service system transformed, as the resources strategies become more firm and solid, into a more delicate and powerful system to meet the twenty-first century''s need. In this study, we found out that although these eight human resources activities like Work & Organizational development, Diversity, Job-interesting, Benefits & Services, Human relations, Reward system, Job-protection, Performance-management in our National Defense Organization, are qualify to the core resource'' features such as value, rareness, imitability and organization’s exploit. We still have to work with the National Defense developing strategy accordingly. And try to get every resource integrated horizontally, and get the new idea of the organization vista transmitted vertically all at once, while we are developing and making use of it. In addition, we must build up a project pattern for the long run, and must keep an eye closely on the explore and communicate of the value-chain among departments, for establishing a mutual supportive system or an active net delivery system as a linkage amongst departments. However, the actions that should do regularly are identifying the gaps of resources, keeping the adjustment to the resources more adequately, and watching out for the balance and concord between new resources and the old ones. Only by doing so, we can create the whole new assets of strategy. This means, on the other hand, not only can we improve our competitive advantage consistently and secure our nation in a more efficient way, but also can we assign the right man into a more productive position to increase our nation''s entire ability economically and competitively.

Roggendorf, Matthias. "Dynamic pricing of wireless network resources in a competitive provider setting." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2880.

Full text
Abstract:
The ongoing convergence of cell-based wireless systems, from proprietary standards for data transmission toward a unifying approach based on the Internet Protocol (IP), as well as the increasing ability of wireless computer networks to support Quality-of-Service, opens up a tremendous potential for new business models and is expected to significantly alter the way mobile and wireless services are provided. An important field of study is about understanding the implications on the competitive structure of the wireless market. With the technical barriers between di erent technologies more and more diminishing, it becomes possible for customers to select network access on-demand instead of entering long-term contracts with a single wireless network provider based on factors such as connection speed, level of mobility and prices. In such a setting, wireless network providers, but also the regulatory bodies designing the principle market rules, need to learn about new ways of allocating resources among customers to reach their objectives. With resources being available on-demand, pricing becomes an important factor for controlling demand and distributing resources among users. Instead of being fixed over longer periods, pricing can be used for signalling the congestion levels in di erent wireless networks and to let users communicate their willingness-to-pay to the market. Besides presenting a classification framework for pricing in wireless networks and providing a comprehensive review of the relevant literature, the main contributions of this thesis are on the development of behavioural strategies, which di erent entities can follow in the described scenarios. In the first scenario we regard wireless resources as a public good, which should be efficiently allocated among active customers. By letting each provider use a second price auction, with each customer being able to bundle resources from multiple providers, we develop a bidding strategy, which allows customers to distribute their demand among providers. The bidding strategy resembles truth-telling in such a market and is shown to be the best strategy a user can follow to fulfill his demand. We examine the properties of the system analytically and present the results of an extensive simulation study. In the second scenario we model a free market for wireless resources on which prices are determined at the time of request. With customers having more than one option to obtain resources, the task of a provider becomes setting prices so that it maximises revenue under partial or full competition. We discuss the constrained maximisation problem and analyse the situation of a two-provider setting as a game. Simulation is used to analyse the game under uncertainty and to understand if a steady-state situation arises. While the results make use of multiple simplifications to allow us to understand the main model variables, the findings can potentially be of interest for providers and market authorities to develop new ways for resource allocation using dynamic pricing as a tool for reaching their design objectives.

During 1970, the transportation of containers has raised. It made the container shipping tendencies towards vessel enlarging, strategic alliances and hub and spoke routing. Recent years, due to the competitive of shipping industry, rapid grows of China’s economic environment and frequently of international trade, investigating which factors affect ports’ development, competitive condition and grows of its containers become much important. This study collects many port related data of 25 ports and economic indicators of countries in eastern Asia from year 1994 to 2009. In order to analyze the changes and affect factors of container throughput and the development of ports in the past and future, we establish regression models and apply grey theory to develop GM(1,1) time series model and use Markov Chain to improve Grey prediction. The result show that using economic factors can develop forecasting models for Asia ports very well, especially, China’s economic indicators are most influential to these ports. And using Markov Chain-Grey in short terms prediction have well accuracy. Then we choose 12 index data of these ports, and use Grey Relational Grade and GM(1,N) model to analyze the port competitive resources in the group’s ranking and the size of impact of these factors. The results show that: many China’s ports or transshipment ports are in the front of the port competitiveness ranking, such as Shanghai, Shenzhen and Singapore. And port facilities and transfer location are also very important for the growth of ports and its influence in the region.

A Study on the Core Resources and Competitive Advantage of Leisure Farm Abstract From the standpoint of resource-based theory, this study aims at exploring the core resources and competitive advantages of different leisure farms in Taiwan mainly, the research purposes consist of (1)providing the managers of leisure farms with suggestions to enhance individual competitive advantages as well as achieve breakthroughs in the bottleneck of farm management, and (2)offering a referential tool to those prospective leisure farm managers to help examine and better understand their managerial abilities. Built upon the quantitative research paradigm, this study employs survey for investigation. As revealed by the ANOVA analysis of influences resulting from different farm characteristics on the application of core resources, the professional background of the person in charge is found to have a significant relationship, though to various degrees, with the operation of four types of core resources, such as the tangible assets, intangible assets, personal expertizes, and organizational attributes. Variances in farm managerial styles, including the single-angled and multiple-angled management, are also confirmed to result in significant differences with respect to the application of tangible farm core resources. The multiple-angled managerial style is further identified superior than the single one. As for the size of the farm is concerned, the sum amount of employees is statistically related to the use of tangible assets and personal expertises. On the one hand, it is the case that the arrangement of tangible assets and personal expertises appears to be better when there are more employees; On the other hand, farm square measure actually correlates with employee number. In regard to farm competitive characteristics, no impact is shown on the use of core resource based on the result of analysis. Additionally, the MANOVA statistical analysis finds that those core resources leading to obvious effects on competitive advantage include the tangible assets, intangible assets, personal expertises, and organizational attributes. An interaction between the tangible assets and intangible assets has achieved a significant influence on the competitive advantages of leisure farms to a considerable extent. Further analysis also reaches that application of the tangible assets contributes to the efficiency of competitive advantages while those intangible assets have various impacts on the quality and effectiveness of leisure farm management as well as customer responses. In terms of personal expertises, a significant influence is evidenced on four indexes of farm competitive advantages: the quality, efficiency, innovation, and customer response. Organizational attributes are also found in relation to farm competitive advantages of the quality, efficiency, and innovation. Moreover. four core resources of tangible assets, intangible assets, personal expertises, and organizational attributes are analyzed and compared from multiple perspectives. Four results are thus concluded: (1)Among different levels of the utilization of tangible assets, a higher level of utilization reveals a stronger negative influence on the quality of farm management than the low level, and has a stronger negative influence on the farm management efficiency than both medium and lower level of utilization. (2)Compared with the medium and lower level of utilization, the high employment of intangible assets has shown the most negative influence on the farm management quality, efficiency, innovation, and customer responses. (3)Both higher and medium level of utilization of personal expertises have resulted in a more positive influence on the quality and efficiency of farm management than the lower level. (4)A higher level utilization of organizational attributes has a more positive influence on the farm management quality and efficiency, innovation, and customer responses than both medium and lower level of utilization. The Multiple Regression analysis demonstrates that, except tangible assets, influences on the competitive advantages by core resources of intangible assets, personal expertises, and organizational attributes all appear significant to a certain degree. The greater intangible assets and organizational attributes are taken into consideration, the more farm competitive advantages can be improved. However, the more intangible assets are utilized, the less farm competitive advantages can be found. In consequence, among those core resources, intangible assets have a higher significant impact on farm competitive advantages than tangible assets, and influences of personal expertises and organizational attributes are more meaningful than core resources of assets. The Regression equation used for analysis in this study is: Y competitive advantages =136.845 - 8.820 tangible assets(high) - 19.503 intangible assets(high) - 14.911 personal expertises(low) + 26.575 organizational attributes(high). Abstract With the implement of the NHI (national health insurance)and the division of medicines, the“doorway drugstores” Came into being, It has been one and a half year since Taiwan enter WTO on Jan 1,2002 , in this background, the competition of drugstores, which are media of the medicine market and medicines, will be even more intense than before. The drugstores, in order to survive in the market, must evaluate their own conditions, and then reorientate their managing forms and exert their own advantages to expand acceptable drugstores for the customers. Therefore, this study probe into the competitive advantages for the drugstores and the correlations therein from the view of information technology, accountant information system and resource basis. Most of the present chain drugstores have adapted the information technology, but it’s not commonly adapted by the individual drugstores. The main reason for that is that they think the information technology is no use and so expensive. From the affection that information technology, accountant information system and resource basis on the competitive advantages of the drugstores, we can see the competitive advantages of “elastic” ”variety” ”efficiency” and ”costs ”can be approved if the drugstores adapt information technology, accountant information system and resource basis. So, Chain drugstores, which have commonly adapted information technology, have more competitive advantages than individual drugstores. Using a resource-based view, this study attempts to examine the current state of science news output, resources allocation about science news making, competitive advantages and disadvantages stemmed from resources allocation differences, and the correlation between science news output and market performance. By conducting in-depth interviews and surveys in 17 mainstream media of Taiwan, this study found that most media while reporting science news focused on natural disasters and health, concentrated on the downstream levels of science activities, and riveted their attentions on topics concerned by society and human beings. Besides, mainstream media are allocating few property-based resources to science news; and only a few media which collaborated with professional science institutions, which maintained positive thinking about science news, or whose top managers had science reporting experiences could exert competitive advantages from systematic and knowledge-based resources. Since a correlation coefficient analysis shows that science news output and market performance are not significantly correlated, the study concerns the willingness of mainstream media producing content for science communication.

The industrial output of the international medicine around the world has increased dramatically. Asian countries were engaged in the international medicine and it was late for Taiwan to engage in this field. The purpose of this study is to explore the key factors of competitive advantage which was formed by distinctive competencies derived from resources and capabilities for medical institutions in the international medical services. The research method is the case study research. The research targets were the hospitals which belonged to regional hospitals and have passed the certification of international medicine. There are four qualified medical institutions. The respondents were those who took the responsibility to implement the international medical affairs in medical institutions. The data were analyzed and collected through depth interviews. In terms of resources, the study found that intangible and human resources would form more distinctive competencies which gained the sustained competitive advantages than tangible resources did. In terms of capabilities, technological innovation and organizational culture would form more distinct competencies which gained the sustained competitive advantages than organization learning did. The conclusion is that medical institutions engaged in international medical services would depend on the nature of resources and capabilities as they need. Through the market segmentation and positioning, medical institution which owns the unique intangible resources, human resources, and medical technology would form sustained competitive advantage in international medical services.

Conventional CRT displays have been replaced substantially by TFT-LCD displays in most recent years and booming TFT-LCD industry is deemed a heavyweight industry in the 21st century. TFT-LCD business, a well developed industrial cluster in Taiwan, Japan and Korea, holds a critical role to each country and becomes the focus that each government pays attention to owing to its heavy investment, industry structure and complex supply chain that it relies on. This research aims to probe into the strategical resources on the back of forming an industrial cluster. Through resource input and enhancement, industrial cluster could be well formed and expanded, and competition of the cluster could be even further lifted up. This research combines cluster, industry structure and competition related theories, together with Porter’s strategical resource model and value-creating network resource raised by this research, to build up a new strategical resource model. In this theory, a well-rounded analysis is applied to exam the TFT-LCD industry and the competition difference among three countries. To the end, strategies to sustain competitive advantage are proposed. In this model, the result suggests the five essential elements to form the cluster: high-quality labor, infrastructure, knowledge, capital and value-creating network resources. With the competition analysis of three countries by this model and Porter’s diamond model, the result concludes with competition ranking: Japan, Korea and Taiwan. At the end of the research, the specific strategies are proposed to Taiwan TFT-LCD manufacturers and government for sustaining competitive advantage and upgrading the cluster competition level.

Mulcahy, Krista. "The effects of resources on the performance of competitive high school marching bands." Thesis, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/20867.

Full text
Abstract:
High school marching bands have several performance options beyond the Friday night football game. These options range from non-competitive regional festivals to performance circuits that culminate in a final national contest. All of these extra-curricular events require resources such as funding, equipment, staffing, and parental involvement (Corral, 2001). The fundamental question was created to investigate opportunities available for participation in music regardless of socioeconomic status, geographic location, etc. Participation in music was explored from the vantage point of marching band – one of the most resource intensive programs in music. Marching band was used in this study because the activity often requires resources that go above and beyond what many administrators, parents, and some directors claim justifiable. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to examine the effects that resources, financial and otherwise, have on directors’ decisions to participate in marching band competitions. High school marching bands from across the United States were compared to determine the amount of finances and resources invested by each program. The purpose was to find out if resources play a role in a band director’s decision to compete at various national or non-national events. Students who desire to participate in music should have the opportunity to participate in any extra-curricular event without regard to economic distinction. Even though marching arts are not offered at all high schools, those who do commit to investing extreme time and resources to the activity. The nature of marching band, coupled with the relatively small amount of scholarly research on marching bands and resources, made it a unique scenario worthy of further inquiry.

Taiwan''s agriculture is facing the impact of economic liberalization and globalization. How to enhance the competitiveness of agriculture and improve farmers’ income has become the most important task of implementing government policy. Especially after entering the WTO, Taiwan will face more sharp competition and the more sophisticated need of agriculture. According to the viewpoint of resource-based, the specific competition of enterprises comes from their unique resources and expertise. Using the unique resources and expertise effectively, they can get better operational performance in some of their fields. It means that enterprises have unique competitive advantages. According to the 2005 Agriculture, Forestry, Fishery and Husbandry Census, we found that the contribution of efficiently implementing human resources and facilities is more important than that of asset to the resources of leisure farming by means of the correlation analysis. Therefore, income level will be the most influential factors to the competitive advantages of leisure farming. The empirical study shows that the resource holding by leisure farming is the most important factor of competitive advantages. We can also promote the development of modernized leisure farming by upgrading the quantity and quality of inputs with respect to cultivated area, the number of employees, farming revenue per unit, and the sale of agriculture products. Furthermore strengthening the characteristics of leisure agriculture, management efficiency, quality of human resources and asset will positively enhance the competitive advantages of leisure farming.
