What kind of economic development trajectory can be expected in cosmopolitan cities that display a high degree of cultural, religious, ethnic and social diversity? Much can be gleaned from examining defined periods in their history that show a rapid transition in religious/cultural and socio-economic terms. Cape Town, a city that prides itself on its deeply rooted diversity and hybridity, and aspires to global status as a creative urban hub after having emerged from the rigidities of apartheid, appears not to be able to manage a breakthrough to sustained long-term development. An examination of the city's transformational period during the early decades of the nineteenth century may explain why this is so. Competitive diversity in religion, culture and business provided the template for a highly individualised development path with a short time horizon. This work uses the analytical tools of human development theory, cultural value analysis, the linkages between religion and economics, rational choice theory, urban development studies, and the study of identity formation and creolisation to construct a lens for the review of religious and socio-economic discourse in Cape Town during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
Recognising that invasion is a structure not an event (Wolfe, 2006) and that settler colonialism shapes the present in significant ways, this thesis investigates the invisible presence of Aboriginal Victorians through a study of the Victorian gold rush and Australian Rules football. As key markers of Australian national identity, the case studies demonstrate the importance of white belonging to identity construction and argue that Aboriginal Victorians are necessarily invisibly present within the settler colonial present (Veracini, 2015).

Abstract:
The competition today has many faces and it has persuaded all kinds of organizations to prepare for the unknown. To broaden your capacity for quick changes or come up with effective and creative initiatives became imperative. Therefore, the choice of strategy and the making of decisions can implicate in the survival of these companies. Our objective is to propose marketing strategies to be used by small bakeries, with a goal to obtain competitive advantages. We emphasize also the study of the strategies adopted by these companies, the comparison of these companyâs strategic actions with the theories advocated by the referred authors and the evaluation of these actions in accordance with the companyâs positioning. The themes of the theoretical referential that substantiated the field research along with the bakeryâs businessmen and managers are associated to the following thematics: strategy and concepts, competitive advantages, strategic positioning and marketing strategy. The characteristics of the local bakeries and the profile of this sector were themes also studied for the better understanding on the subject. The researched companies are traditional bakeries and are of great economical importance for the region where they are installed. The research allowed us to confirm the unawareness of marketing. It was also verified, that the competition between companies of this sector is very aggressive, and that the companies which adopts marketing strategies do so with competitive advantages in mind. In a general way, it was observed that the elevated growth of the economy makes the changes in strategical behavior of the companies mandatory, which suggests a deeper look in to these questions.

Patrick, Diane Porter. "The Response of a Public School District to Charter School Competition: An Examination of Free-Market Effects." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1999. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2434/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine a school district's responses to charter schools operating within its boundaries. The selected district was the only one in the state with two large academically competitive charter schools for at least two years. Four questions guided the research: In terms of instruction, finance, communication, and leadership, how has the traditional district been impacted due to charter school existence? The exploratory research was timely since charter schools are proliferating as tax-supported public choice schools. While many have speculated about free-market effects of charter school competition on systemic educational reform, the debate has been chiefly along ideological lines; therefore, little empirical research addresses this issue. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used to present a comprehensive case study. Twenty-six school officials and teachers were interviewed; 159 teachers and 1576 parents were surveyed. District, community, and state education department documents were analyzed. Since charter schools have existed in the district, numerous activities have taken place. Instructional initiatives included a high school academy, expanded technology, gifted and talented, tutoring, and dropout prevention. All elementary and middle schools required uniforms. The district's state accountability rating improved from acceptable to recognized. A leadership void was perceived due to students leaving to attend charter schools initially. The district was perceived as making efforts to improve communication with the community. The financial impact of charter schools was neutralized due to the district's student population increase, property wealth, and state charter funding structure. The data supported all of the hypotheses in terms of the impact of charter schools in the district on these activities: free-market effects of charter school competition were not established as the primary reason for internal organizational changes that occurred in the district. Anecdotal evidence suggested that charter schools may have played some role, but primarily they seemed to reinforce trends already occurring in the district.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of information technology (IT) on the competitive position of a firm. The problem motivating this study is the potential for misallocation of scarce resources on new technology without realizing the level of competitive advantage (CA) expected. This study was a single-site case study. It examined the factors related to the selection, design, development, implementation, use, and effects of an information system (IS) intended to generate CA. The study examined all these factors within the organizational and industrial contexts of the subject firm.

Ramesh, M. "The politics of industrial adjustment in Canada : the case of the footwear industry." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29167.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is, first, to describe the Canadian government's policy for the domestic footwear industry during the 1970-1985 period, and second, to account for the forces that shaped it. The analysis is conducted within an "organizational" framework, which is based on the approach developed by Peter Hall. The framework postulates that the relationships within and among state, societal, and international political-economic institutions are the key determinants of economic policy. The study argues that it is the conflicts within and among the state, manufacturing interests (business and labour in the footwear industry, and those in the supplying industries), and trading interests (importers and retailers dealing in footwear), conditioned by international political economy, that shaped the government's policy. It is concluded that the state and manufacturing interests formed internally united organizations and pursued well defined objectives. The state's objective was to assist the industry through high tariffs and financial aid for modernization. In contrast, the manufacturing interests' objective was to secure quotas on imports. While the two sides were internally united, neither were sufficiently strong to impose their objectives on the other. The international political economy favoured the use of tariffs and financial assistance. At the same time, circumstances arose -- resulting from economic recession, appreciation of the Canadian dollar, and the threat of Quebec separatism--that made it difficult for the state to resist the manufacturing interests' demands. In such circumstances, the industry succeeded, if only temporarily, in securing quotas in addition to tariffs and financial assistance. The trading interests were somewhat divided among themselves, which restricted their capacity to participate effectively in the policy process. Their positions were relevant only to the extent they could be selectively used by the state to resist the manufacturing interests' demands. A theme of major theoretical significance that emerges from this study is the importance of international political economy in the making of domestic policies. The second theoretical implication of the study is the need to view the state and societal actors in a policy process not just as players, but also as structures. They form an organized relationship, both within and in relation to each other, which facilitates the pursuit of some objectives and impedes the accomplishment of others.

Mfono, Zanele Ntombizanele. "An analysis of the emerging patterns of reproductive behaviour among rural women in South Africa : a case study of the Victoria East District of the Eastern Cape Province." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52660.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (DPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study describes and analyses changes in women's reproductive behaviour ID developing communities. These changes took more than hundred years to occur ID Western communities but only two to three decades in developing communities such as Taiwan and Barbados. The population of Victoria East district of the Eastern Cape province of South Afiica was chosen as a case study of these changes. Changes in the reproductive behaviour of women are described over a period of twenty-two years. The base year for the study is 1978 and data were collected up to 2001. Changes increased in particular since 1988. Statistical descriptive analyses were undertaken with regard to patterns of changes in variables such as age at the onset of births, child spacing, the mean number of births per woman, fertility regulation, and the number of children ever bom. Variations in patterns were analysed according to age cohorts, occupation and marital status. Information regarding these variables was collected from records at hospitals and clinics. Focus group interviews were held to reflect women's own descriptions and experiences regarding these variables. The research design thus combines the quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings confirm a pattern of fertility decline that Caldwell described as the African pattern, which is different from that seen in Europe and Asia. It is characterized by a progressive delay in onset of childbearing and reductions in the mean number of childbirths that occur across all age cohorts and are associated with contraceptive accessibility. The high incidence of non-marital childbearing in the Victoria East district however sets the population studied apart from the polygamous Afiican societies on which Caldwell based the African transition. In this respect the population considered resembles the scenarios seen in Latin America, the Caribbean, Botswana and in recent years Europe. The study population shows a divergence in the patterns of marital and non-marital childbearing, with marital childbearing following the African pattem. Because of its high incidence, non-marital childbearing is dominant and the major contributor to the fertility decline that is afoot. The implications of this pattern needs much more in-depth study before comparisons with the above-mentioned communities can be made.

By the end of 2010, it is estimated that Apple iPad sales have topped 8,500,000 since its launch on January 27, 2010. The iPad tablet computer is not the first of its kind on the market, but certainly, to date, it is the one that sells by far the best. Actually, the first commercialized tablet computer was GRiDPad, made by GRiD Systems in September of 1989, which adopted MS-DOS as its operating system. Before Microsoft marketed Windows XP Tablet PC Edition in the autumn of 2002, tablet computers were mainly used by professionals in undersized markets, such as industrial, medicinal, and governmental ones. All the other tablet computer-related products before iPad, like Apple’s Newton and Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, have ended in failure, why can iPad, put on the market in 2010, become such a success? Through case-studying Microsoft Tablet PC, Apple iPod, and Nintendo Wii, the research aims to build up a complete and creative framework and strategic steps for marketing hi-tech products, and analyzes the strengths of iPad’s competitive strategies as well. The research, therefore, first examines what success or failure the three cases have achieved by use of the marketing theory. The close examination of the three cases leads to the establishment of a strategic analysis framework, which is utilized to investigate the competitive strategies that iPad adopts. By offering the best available strategy for the theory to put into practice, the research intends to assist other researchers or practitioners to develop a better or full-fledged strategy or practice. This framework can also better complete the marketing methods for hi-tech products, and help the administrators in this field to develop better marketing strategies of their own once they learn the different viewpoints concerning the hi-tech marketing in this research.

The European Union (EU) is both a supranational and intergovernmental organization consisting of 28 Member States. Over the course of five decades, it has become more and more integrated economically, aiming to form an internal market that seeks to guarantee the free movements of goods, capital, service and labors between the EU member states. Against the backdrop of globalization today, the world has become borderless, in which cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have become the norm. Being one of the major actors in international trade, the EU is by no means a stranger to this phenomenon. As mentioned above, the EU has created the internal market, and therefore the regulations must be made at the European level and observed by all the Member States to ensure faire competition among all the market players. After the entry into force of the Single European Act (SEA) in 1987, which set the objective of establishing a European Single Market by the end of 1992, the aviation industry underwent the process of liberalization. Under Single European Sky and EU-US Open Skies Agreement, the entry barrier of the airline industry has been removed. From then on, not only can flag carrier fly regular transatlantic flights, but also private sectors. The deregulation in European aviation market serves two purposes: preventing government interventions within the EU, and thus creating a dynamic and diverse investment environment. However, the deregulation has made the market more competitive. To make their business more profitable, many airline companies will seek a merger with their competitors. In view of this phenomenon, the competition law is needed to ensure the open competition. The thesis aims to analysis the origin and the development of the EU Competition law and its application to cross-border airlines merger cases.

AUO and InnoLux, two Taiwanese panel factories, have exported one of the most pieces of panel in the world. In 2017, both companies’ revenue reached more than 30 billion NTD; though having around 60 billion NTD of liability in 2011. As we know, few years ago, AUO and InnoLux suffered from an unscrupulously underpricing among competitors and was regarded as an awful performing in their businesses. Nevertheless, as time went by, it seems obvious that both of the companies have found out their niche market in the panel industry. What are the strategies made by AUO and InnoLux respectively and how these strategies changed this competitive situation? The dynamic competitive perceptive is utilized in this thesis to figure out the answer of the question stated above. What’s more, instead of one-time competition, this research is going to put more emphasis on “feedback loop”, which means multi-run rivalry. With feedback loop, the research can tell more specific about what the effect of the strategy was and how it changed the competitive situation of them. Before 2014, both companies tried to get the order as large amount as possible while the profit was low, causing the unstable income and satisfaction of both companies’ performance. After that, AUO decided to dedicate to niche market (commercial panel); since InnoLux dug in medium & small size panel. From then on, the two companies set themselves on different paths. The aim of the research is not only to explain the reborn of AUO and InnoLux in a systematic way, but also point out a different view of the dynamic competitive structure.

Abstract:
Business educators and employers recognize the importance of quantitative methods to business professionals, and subjects in quantitative methods are among the most frequentiy required in the business undergraduate curriculum. However, both business employers and graduates have expressed some dissatisfaction with business education and comment that school ttaining fails to prepare graduates adequately for the particular needs of business organisations. Because of recent changes in technology in the business environment, business educators need to understand what employers consider important, what quantitative methods are required in industry, and how education in quantitative methods can best be prepared in order to meet the needs of business in the 21st century. This research study attempts to answer these questions by investigating the content of quantitative programs offered at the Victoria University of Technology, the effectiveness of associated teaching methods in undergraduate business comses and the viewpoints of final-year students, graduates, educators and business employers about the courses.

Larocque, Krystal Lynn. "Blurred park boundaries and the spread of English Ivy (Hedera helix L.): case studies from Greater Victoria, British Columbia." Thesis, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2383.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the invasiveness of English ivy (Hedera helix L..: Araliaceae). an exotic horticultural species, in 14 near-urban parks in Greater Victoria. British Columbia. Using descriptive notes from field observations, the overall invasiveness of H. helix is assessed in each park, particularly near park boundaries. Land use associated with the fragmentation of natural habitat directly outside each park is characterised and related to invasion inside the park. Only three of the 14 representative parks examined are not invaded by P. helix. and four are very extensively invaded. ' The analysis of administrative park boundaries supports the hypothesis that H. helix begins invasion inside park boundaries that are adjacent to established residential areas. H. helix is found in moist forest communities of grand fir (Abies grandis) bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) and western redcedar (Thuja plicata). Communities c f Garry oak (Quercus garryana) with black hawthorn (Crataegus douglasii) and English hawthorn (C. monogyna) are heavily invaded and vulnerable to invasion' However. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forest communities are most heavily invaded and especially at risk of invasion. H helix climbs at least 17 species of trees and tall shrubs. with Douglas-fir trees providing the tallest supports. Other areas in parks vulnerable to invasion by H. helix include woodlands with rich soils, slight canopy gaps. windthrown forest edges, park entranceways and accessways. During the growth season, H. helix shoots were monitored in both heavily and less invaded sites. On average, shoots on the forest floor grew 22 cm per month. and on host trees, shoots grew 17 cm per month. Another growth characteristic of H. helix is that where it is long established on host trees, its stems have radial growth rings viewable in cross-section. These rings are likely annual and sensitive to annual climatic variability. The spread of an introduced liana, a plant form not present in the indigenous flora, has several implications for near-urban forest ecology including altered physical forest structure, hastened tree death and suppression of understory species (e.g. seedlings and shrub species such as salal - Gaultheria shallon and possibly red huckleberry - Vaccinium parvifolium). The increased concentration and range of exotic, horticultural species such as H. helix, in near-urban park and forest fragments, signifies that an exotic species management strategy is urgently needed for habitat and ecosystem conservation.

Abstract:
Increased competition among education providers has made the process of student choice regarding higher education institutions (institutions) more complicated for potential students. At the same time, institutions are striving to attract new students through new and innovative ways. This research contributes to an increased understanding of the social influence factors that impact on student choice processes and explores their effect on the selection of institutions. This study predominantly focused on factors influencing the final choice of institutions. However, in order to consider a broader range of social pressures on student choice, the study also examined the stages of development of a predisposition to engage in post-secondary education and the information search. This study adopted a qualitative methodology and employed the phenomenological perspective as a theoretical basis to investigate students’ choice processes. A series of research questions guided the in- depth face to face interviews, conducted with 13 first-year undergraduate students, which had the main objective of interpreting and exploring the participants’ lived experiences contributing to their choice of institution. The findings of the study highlight the importance of perceived elements of sincerity and credibility during prospective student encounters with influencing agents. These crucial elements affecting student choices provide further insight in identifying the prerequisite conditions for these perceptions to form. The research makes contributions to the broader body of knowledge concerned with student choice through the adoption of a phenomenological perspective and a strong focus on the role of social influence in this context. The research offers practical implications for higher education marketers as it informs the development of more targeted marketing communication and recruitment campaigns through increased knowledge of the student choice processes and the social influence determinants that underpin these processes.
