Ingnäs, Gustav, and Kasper Heikkilä. "Motivating Millennials : A study on generation Y motivation." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-243213.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores generation Y motivators. They are a growing group of young people among the general workforce, and they have different behavior and motivators at work. This paper explores effective motivating factors for this group of employees by studying a company, LinkedIn, which successfully motivates generation Y employees. Data is gathered through several interviews done with LinkedIn employees working at their Dublin office. The data is analyzed with the help of a motivational theory called self-determination theory and its main concepts autonomy, relatedness and competence. Other insights from earlier studies done on generation Y motivation are used to support the analysis as well. The results and analysis are consistent with theory and earlier studies, and can even show some interesting factors generation Y employees value, such as high value for manager flexibility and sharing similar values with the company they work for.

Abstract:
This study explored how motivation and motivational strategies influence the communicative competence of students from Saudi Arabia. Participants included Saudi students enrolled in English courses in Australian educational institutions, and Saudi students living in Saudi Arabia studying in English language institutes in Saudi Arabia. Phase One involved interviews with16 participants. In Phase Two, 279 participants completed a questionnaire. Findings included differences between participants’ measured and self-reported communicative competence, with the Australian group having higher levels of measured and self-reported communicative competence. In addition, motivation teaching strategies were found to affect students’ motivation, but not their communicative competence.

Abstract:

Lopez, Francesca. "Educational Policy and Scholastic Competence Among English Language Learners." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193881.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, I explore the potential impact of differing educational policies and reform efforts that influence state and federal standards-based assessments and their interpretations. Specifically, I examine the educational policies of Arizona (Structured English Immersion [SEI]) and Texas (bilingual education) for their effect on the belief systems of students, parents, and teachers. I also examine the role of identity and language in the motivation to learn and student disposition toward school among English Language Learners (ELLs). In support of a co-regulation model of emerging identity, acculturation, acculturative stress, and student perceptions of scholastic competence, student disposition toward school, and student motivational dynamics contributed to the accurate prediction of 77.5% of the participants' group membership in either SEI or bilingual education. ELLs in bilingual education had higher perceptions of scholastic competence than ELLs in SEI (d = .54). Four types of dispositions toward school, Pride in Achieving, Participation and Belonging, Literacy, and Math, were higher for ELLs in bilingual education than for ELLs in SEI. Contrary to the hypothesized results, however, there were no differences in the Rigid and Right disposition between ELLs in SEI and bilingual education. In reference to motivation, scores on Disengaged and Distracting were higher for ELLs in SEI (Arizona) than for ELLs in bilingual programs (Texas). However, contrary to the hypotheses, Good Worker/Engaged Learner, and Struggling and Persistent were higher for ELLs in SEI than for ELLs in bilingual programs. I conclude by discussing the potential impact of differing educational policies and reform efforts on the belief systems of ELLs, their parents, and teachers.

Lindberg, Catharina. Thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Education in Arts and Professions, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-39784.

Full text
Abstract:

This study investigated the main motives for why some registered nurses choose to continue on the path of higher educational studies. More specific, this study aimed to explore how registered nurses with additional academic marks in nursing science viewed academic competence development. Following questions were used to capture the complexity of the phenomenon of academic competence development; i) What did competence development involve for the registered nurses? ii) What kind of knowledge did they strive to develop and why? iii) What were the main motives for their competence development? and finally iv) What factors did they perceive as facilitators and/or barriers for competence development? Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten female registered nurses, who were either still enrolled or had completed basic or advanced academic studies in Nursing Science. The informants worked in different kind of specialties either in secondary or in primary care. All the interviews were taped and transcribed before being analyzed inspired by the model of content analysis as described by Graneheim and Lundman. Established theories and definitions for the concepts of competence, knowledge and motivation were used to understand, explain and/or to evaluate the findings. The content analysis revealed four categories,‘motivations’, ‘conditions’, ‘competences’ and finally ‘consequences’. Each category was also interpreted to include several sub categories. One of the main findings coming out from this study was the obvious culture clash experienced to occur in meetings between the informants and newly graduated registered nurses or nursing students. Experiencing this culture clash meant that the informants became strongly motivated to pursue further degrees in nursing science. Their studies mainly aimed at increasing their knowledge within their own speciality but also to increase their skills in appraising and performing nursing research. Their own individual and personal developments were interpreted to be both a motive and a consequence of taking on further academic competence development. In the analysis of the nurses stories it became obvious that clinical practice were not yet ready for nurses who departures from a theoretical and academy knowledge base in their everyday practice. Hence, practical and productive nursing knowledge, mainly described by the nurses as abilities, were more highly valued than theoretical academic knowledge. The nurses experienced that the process of continuing to develop their academic competences could be compared by a journey and in this case more specific an academic journey.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Research shows that preservice education students tend to lack competence, confidence, motivation, and self-identity for facilitating singing in primary school classrooms. In response, this Doctor of Education project involved preservice music education students in classroom and pitch-matching interventions to improve their singing knowledge and skills. Data were collected through a One Group Pretest-Posttest Survey Design and Semi-Structured interviews. The study’s key finding is that when preservice students experience transformative pedagogy through pitching-matching and develop their singing competence, this leads to greater confidence and a higher likelihood that they will implement music in their classrooms in the future.

Almström, Kristina, and Ulrika Andersson. "Hur påverkar kompetensutveckling individens engagemang och motivation?" Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2000. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-659.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper was to review research within the field of digital games and language learning to explore whether gaming can facilitate communicative competence and foster motivation for language learning. To answer my questions I conducted a research synthesis, compiling a variety of research over the last decade to answer my questions as effectively as possible. Results showed that digital games do in fact facilitate language development and induce motivation. Research also showed that different games provide different opportunities and activities, resulting in some games fostering language competence more than others. For instance, World of Warcraft provided social situations where conversations were erratic, spontaneous, contextual and driven by small events in the game, while The Sims focused more on strategic and creative activities. Additionally, research suggested that digital games motivated learners to develop their L2 language in hope of achieving more goals together within a variety games and game types.

Full text
Abstract:
The task manager Habitica was studied to explain 1) How Habitica motivates by satisfying the psychological needs identified by SDT and 2) Why users keep using Habitica. Based on theories of gamification, motivation and the theoretical framework METUX an interview study was conducted with 10 participants followed by a thematic analysis. Personalization, avatars, responsibility toward party members and different rewards were identified as motivating factors. However, some participants experienced the opposite with some of the factors mentioned. The motivating factors identified by the study could be connected to one or more psychological needs, based on the theoretical framework of the study. More research is necessary to determine if the findings apply to other settings outside of the context of the study.

Full text
Abstract:
This longitudinal study uses a cultural ecological-transactional perspective (Garcia-Coll, et. al., 1996; Kuperminc, et al., in press) to examine whether relational factors (familism and parental involvement) predict processes of motivation and achievement one year later among 199 Latino adolescents from immigrant families. Parent involvement predicted higher present-oriented and future-oriented motivation, and familism predicted higher present-oriented motivation. Future-oriented motivation predicted higher perceived school competence, while present-oriented motivation predicted lower perceived school competence. Both future and present-oriented motivation increased over time for recent immigrants significantly more than for US-reared youth. Findings suggest that 1) familism and parent involvement relate significantly to processes of achievement motivation among Latino youth 2) future-oriented and present-oriented motivation are distinct from one another and are linked to perceived school competence in unique, and inverse ways among Latino youth and 3) immigration age plays an important role in the motivational processes of Latino youth over time.

Clements, Jami Beth. "The Impact of the Balanced Literacy Approach in Reading Instruction on Student Reading Motivation and Reading Competence." W&M ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1582642577.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the impact Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction had on student motivation to read and student reading competence in the elementary school of one public school district. This study analyzed extant student summative reading assessment data and extant teacher observation data. The study also administered the Self-Regulation Questionnaire-Reading Motivation to measure the reading motivation of students who had received Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction in the district from first grade through fifth grade. The study sought to determine the amount of reading time administered during reading instruction during the implementation, the current level of student reading motivation, and the longitudinal growth of student reading competence. The study used the CIPP model of program evaluation for data collection on the context, input, process, and products of implementation and student results of the Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction. The findings of the study indicate that the Balanced Literacy approach is not being implemented with fidelity based on the disparity of student reading time between teachers. Based on survey results, the current level of student motivation to read varies significantly between students and does not reflect trends in motivation research. The students have not experienced significant growth in reading competence during implementation. Recommendations for future research and continuous program improvement include providing consistent and continuous professional development on Balanced Literacy, collecting baseline data on student motivation to measure growth, and analyzing the effect of Balanced Literacy Reading Instruction on student populations more aligned to the district’s student population.

Abstract:
Competence-oriented pedagogy has entered the training of the health and social sector in France since the year 2000. The aim of this doctoral dissertation is to explore the effects on motivation, academic achievement and professional adaptation. This doctoral dissertation is based on constructivist, socio-constructivist and socio-cognitivist theories. In this context, three surveys were conducted, the first two with students and the last one with professionals. These surveys compared two groups of students : a group that benefited from a competence-oriented pedagogy and another group that benefited from traditional methods. This doctoral dissertation shows that students who have benefited from a competence-oriented pedagogy have less amotivation, and more extrinsic motivation (MEID and MERE). Their school results are also higher. However, they seem less autonomous and less able to transfer their knowledge. These results question supervision, training of supervisors, and use of portfolio and integration units in training

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Testing and analysis of measurement data is a major part of the workday for development engineers within the section Fluid and Emission Treatment to assure the quality of products developed by Scania CV. The ineluctable variation and therefore uncertainty of results can be quantified and discussed with the use of statistical methods. The overall objective of this study is to examine how the competence of development engineers can be improved within the area of statistics. This has been done by relating the concept of competence with the use of statistical methods to analyse experimental data and by investigating which factors that influence the competence of the engineers. Observations of the daily operations, interviews and a focus group with development engineers and a workshop with management personnel, has been used as research methods in this study. The results show that the desired competence, from the perspective of the individual, consists of knowledge, motivation and support. It is important that none of these parts are neglected when the competence of engineers is to be strengthened. The demand of statistical analysis by management and decision makers is a factor that has been shown to have great influence on the competence of development engineers. The competence of development engineers is also influenced by which tools and other types of support the organisation offers. The conclusion is that competence development is more comprehensive than a one-time-effort, as for example a short course, since the competence needs to be maintained and develop as the business evolves. A continuous support from the organisation would probably contribute to a more active development of competence. Knowledge sharing between colleagues on internal digital platforms has great potential and could be a component of a continuous support for the development engineers.

Abstract:
To maintain motivated employees is considered an organizational success factor. According to previous research, organizations with motivated employees are 30-40 percent more productive than organizations with amotivated employees. Motivation is also considered to have positive effects on employees' personal development, performance, job satisfaction and well-being. Previous research based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) explains that three basic psychological needs, autonomy, competence and relatedness contribute to increased work motivation. It is also proved that external factors in social environments can promote or inhibit employees' motivation, according to SDT. Although previous research has shown that employee motivation is significant for organizations, as well as having positive effects on employee development, performance, job satisfaction and prosperity, limited qualitative research explains how employees are motivated. The researchers for this study believe that the results of previous studies explain what contributes to an increased work motivation among employees but does not provide detailed explanations which work-related factors employees feel as motivating. The aim of the study is thus to contribute to increased understanding and knowledge of how employees are motivated by the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness, and how external factors such as organizational values and wages contribute to increased or decreased internal motivation. The researchers have done a qualitative case study and with the help of interviews answered the purpose and research questions of the study. The results and conclusions of the study show how employees can be motivated based on the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness, and how organizational values and wages are contributing to increased or decreased internal work motivation.

Abstract:
The research sought to uncover the links that exist between perceived competence, goal orientations and mind sets with the motivation to participate in sports. The research was conducted in a South African university context and was comprised of 212 participants. Data was collected through the use of Sports Motivation Scale 6, Intrinsic Motivation Inventory: Perceived Competence Subscale, Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire and the Self-Theory Questionnaire. The participants completed the questionnaires using a pen and paper technique at their various sports practices. Data was collected and analysed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient in order to demonstrate the strength and nature of the relationships that existed between the variables. Findings generally supported previous findings. Using a deductive approach, the main findings found that various types of motivation based on Self-Determination Theory demonstrated a proportional relationship with task orientation and little to no relationship was found between motivation and ego orientation. The relationships between motivation and perceived competence were mixed, with the most significant relationship occurring between integrated regulation and perceived competence. Fixed mind sets also showed little to no relationship with motivation, whereas growth mind sets showed proportional relationships with the various kinds of motivation. Further relationships between these variables were also explained. It is recommended that data collection techniques are improved in future research. This research may be useful in indicating what factors are related to motivation to play sport at university.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research survey is to investigate how the extramural English that primary-school pupils, grades 4-6, devote their leisure time to - playing games, listening to music, surfing the web and watching TV – may affect their performance of English in school. The study also investigates research about the teachers’ role in the pupils’ development of English proficiency. The research that I review in this essay shows that extramural English has positive effects on the pupils’ learning in school. The results also show that it is important for teachers to base their teaching on the pupils’ prior knowledge of, and interest in, English. In this way, teachers can help increase the pupils’ motivation to learn more English. How teachers encourage pupils to learn is also examined, to a limited extent, in this study, particularly how they make pupils take responsibility for their own language learning.

Abstract:
Digital competence used to be a confusing concept, until recently when some researchers coined a comprehensive definition of digital competence and formulated a conceptual framework in an SME context. However, the framework was only at a conceptual level and required to be tested with the empirics of a qualitative or quantitative study. By an abductive qualitative approach, this research explored existing theories on digital competence and formulated a new digital competence framework in Swedish manufacturing SME perspective. Moreover, with cross-sectional study design, this research explored the role of digital competence in the internationalization process of six Swedish manufacturing firms, which is unprecedented in academic literature. Our findings indicate that digital competence is an evolving concept which develops gradually with technological advancements and requires a combination of three integral components: i) Digital technologies (basic and advanced level digitalization), ii) Automation of organizational processes, iii) Human resources who have the latest digital skills and are duly motivated to use these skills. This research affirms that after attaining digital competence Swedish manufacturing SMEs can sustain a competitive advantage in their international markets and it successfully facilitates in the firm’s internationalization process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is, from a symbolic interactionistic perspective, to try to understand what motivates adult amateur actors, amateur singers and amateur musical artists to participate in non-profit artistic projects. The study also determines whether art practice and the group attending have any impact on the individual's identity and identity formation. Nine semi-structured interviews have been done to get a deeper understanding about the motivation and identity creation. The data from the interviews shows that social belonging, artistic challenge and development, participation in the artistic process, the sense of flow, the desire to express oneself as well as personal development were the main motivation factors. It also shows that both the artistic performance as well as the group had an impact on the individual's identity and identity formation. The data are then explained by motivation theories and theories of identity.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to investigate how preschool leaders perceive that they give preschool organisations the opportunity for collegial learning and how this is experienced in the organisation. Together with the theoretical perspectives: social learning, group reflection and competence the study describes how the categories emerged in the result. The categories are in the study referred to motivation, professional learning and guidance manager. These three categories are then discussed and it is highlighted that a part in the collegial learning is shared discussions that the preschool managers' gives the preschool teachers opportunity for. The preschool managers' also mean that it is important from a scientific perspective to extending skills of each preschool teacher through collegial learning. The conclusion is that preschool managers do not really tell what they mean when they say collegial learning. They are using the concept of collegial learning together with systematic quality work. However, I understand that preschool managers see collegial work as something positive in preschool organisations, but how they know that collegial learning is happening they do not say. In the preschool the teachers can use the already existing competences in their collegial learning. In this study it is also found that keypersons are an important part of the development of preschool organisations. These keypersons can also develop and/or supervise preschool teachers in collegial learning for develop a preschool in constant development.

Abstract:
Digital technology is to be found in many places today, especially in school. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of digital tools in the teaching of mathematics by lower secondary teachers. The method of the study was a qualitative method in which eight teachers from tree different schools were interviewed. The material collected from the interviews was analyzed on the basis of a content analysis, where the results were divided into two main categories and then into subcategories. The two main categories that emerged were "Digital tools in teaching" and "Teachers´ perception of digital tools". The earlier research indicated that the teachers´skills had great influence in how they choose to use the digital tools. Research also showed that digital tools, if used for the right purpose, could affect student motivation and mathematical understanding in a positive way. The result of the study shows that all the teachers that participated see digital tools as something positive even though they themselves think that they should have had more digital skills. They however see a profit with digital tools and believe that students become more committed when they use them. They also think that digital tools are important in order to make a difference in their teaching. What emerges from the result is that digital tools in teaching have a good effect on students´ motivation but that teachers´ digital skills need to be improved. The government´s decision to clarify the curriculum in terms of digital competence also places higher demands on teachers.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to see if people’s motivation can be developed by the practice of the method focusing. The motivational constructs used to reflect the participants sense of motivation is; autonomy and competence. Autonomy is in this study derived from the theory of self-determination and is concerned with the participant’s degree of expressing their personal or autonomous desires, choices and goals (Skinner & Edge, 2002). Competence is in this study, a construct derived from Self-efficacy theory, and is concerned with the participants’ degree of using their capabilities effectively (Bandura, 1997). I have used qualitative methods; more specifically I have been inspired by phenomenology, to explore the common essences of the effects of focusing on their sense of motivation. I have interviewed three participants which have at least completed two levels of focusing. They are thus considered familiar with the essence of focusing, which practically means spending time or listening to a bodily felt issue, experience or problem (Gendlin, 1996). The raw data were analyzed by using a phenomenological reduction which resulted in four themes. The three themes that caught the essence of their experience of motivation were; “I focus on what I can do in my career,” “I am clearer about me in relationship with other people,” and “I want to do this.” The degree of their motivation was discussed with literature from Albert Bandura (1997, 2001), Edvard Deci and Richard Ryan (1985, 2002). The final theme representing their experience of focusing; “I can read what is going on,” was used together with relevant literature from Eugene Gendlin (1996, 2003) to gauge the effect of focusing, on the participants’ sense of motivation. The Findings in this study indicate that there is a positive effect from the practice of focusing on the participants’ motivation. The participants seem to use their competence and autonomy better. Focusing seem to contribute in terms of; higher levels of self-aiding thoughts and feelings, a stronger inward relationship and a stronger control in terms of overcoming negative states and perceived challenges. The participants seem more inclined to  act from personal or autonomous desires and goals and to use relevant competence effectively in social and occupational settings.

Abstract:
This thesis has aimed at conducting experimentally informed reflection on the role or the function of ICT in the process of acquisition of LE and learning of multiculturalism and openness to the other. It also aims to evaluate the potential of students’ acquisitionnel in knowledge, skills, communication and openness to other cultures. The research supported by this problem is also related to the role of ICT in the learning process in primary school: To what extent these new technologies involved in developing young people's skills in the field of French language and intercultural? ICT allow for simulations of various phenomena (physical, historical ...), they provide students with very diverse ways to realize the skills and knowledge they can develop while awakening their curiosity and motivation. Field research is based on two concrete learning experience language and French culture through networking school in various Francophone countries each using ICT. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ self-esteem regarding the subject of mathematics and what affects their motivation in the subject. The applied method in this study is a survey that generated both quantitative and qualitative data. The basis of the survey and the analysis is the self-efficacy theory and the self-determination theory. The results of my study indicates that the students’ need for competence, togetherness and autonomy are not met to the degree that allows them to feel motivation in the subject of matematics. The result can also be interpreted as that students’ self-esteem is relatively low and in these cases has a negative impact on the students’ motivation in the subject. In order for us teachers to be able to further motivate students in the subject of matematics we have to ensure that these needs are fulfilled and that we help them to increase their self-esteem in the subject.

Abstract:
Human resources are probably one of the most important component within organizations, due to the workforce of employees is the original cause of efficiency, capital and maintenance of machines. Employees' work motivation is the essential to study since work motivation is one of the most important tools for employees to achieve a favorable work result. Unmotivated employees would probably contribute little or give no effort at all in their work. In many cases it can be a challenge for employers to maintain a high level of work motivation, because the employees seems to have different needs to keep their motivation at the highest level. The study has been based on external symbolic and external material motivational factors, since external work motivation is important for employees' performance in the work accomplished. In order to give answer to the study's problem formulation a qualitative researching method has been used, in which interviews were made on employees from the case study's two different departments. The study was made on an organization within the industry. This industry is growing larger in Sweden and especially in Västra Götaland County, where the study took place. The study wants to describe the importance of maintaining employees' work motivation and how it can be different between departments. The results of the study showed the importance of knowing the different needs from employees since it has been found out there have been differences in both the demand for different motivational factors and also the employees' views on the definition of work motivation. However, it is important to keep in mind that the study's results are only an indication of how employees can gain increased work motivation based on external symbolic and external material motivation factors, and how employees' work motivation can be differentiated within different departments belonging to the same organization.

Abstract:

The purpose of this essay is to examine the possibilities to competence development within two different departments at the country council of Halland. This is done to obtain an understanding of the existing preconditions for learning and competence development within the above mentioned organization. The purpose of the study is to get an answer to the following questions: (1) How does the employees of the country council of Halland view their abilities to develop new competence themselves? (2) How are the healthcare units learning within the workplace structured? (3) What are the precondition for learning within the workplace? (4) How are the co-workers within the country council of Halland attracted to staying and at the same time given the opportunity to develop themselves? To get an answer to these questions we have conducted nine individual interviews with respondents in different professions within the country council of Halland. The outcome of these interviews shows that the respondents view their possibility to develop competence as good and that there is a good climate for learning. They also show that there is an adequate infrastructure that enables learning whithin the country council of Halland. It was also found that there is a wide selection of different educations made available to the employees. The employees also find that there is a great deal of freedom when it comes to individual choices and preferences among these educations. The three main weaknesses to be able to develop competence were found to be lack of time and resources for participating in various courses and educations along with the demands from the management. We believe that the lack of time hinders tha respondents being creative and reflective during their workplace learning. When cutbacks are done within the organization they are not seldom done in the number of staff which hampers the learning due to the fact that fewer employees are to conduct the same tasks within a smaller timeframe. At the same time the respondents feel that they have a lot of freedom to act and that they also have the possibility to influence and be a part of the decisions taken that effect their own workunit. In conclusion, tha employees of the country council of Halland view their own organization as stabile and reliant which contributes to a high level of satisfaction and that the employees are willing to stay and develop themseves within the organization.

Troum, Julie F. "Empowered for Practice: The Relationship Among Perceived Autonomy Support, Competence, and Task Persistence of Undergraduate Applied Music Students." Scholar Commons, 2010. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1795.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among undergraduate applied music students' perceptions of autonomy support, competence, and task persistence. One assumption of self-determination theory was that competence would increase when social environment supported self-organization. A motivational-cognitive framework designed to promote sustained motivation in undergraduate applied music students was proposed. Three self-report scales administered in the form of a web survey were completed by undergraduate applied music students (N = 366) at six Florida universities. The scales were designed to measure perceived autonomy support, perceived competence, and perceived persistence in practice in the applied music studio setting. Internal consistency reliability estimates as measured by Cronbach's alpha were high for all three measures: perceived competence (alpha = .89), perceived autonomy support (alpha = 92), and perceived task persistence of musical practice (alpha = .87). All three constructs-perceived competence, perceived autonomy support, and perceived task persistence showed a significant positive correlation with each other. The use of perceived competence as a mediating variable in a hypothesized path model helps to illuminate the nature of the relationships among the three constructs. In the path analysis model, perceived autonomy support was found to have a significant direct effect on perceived task persistence. Thus, students who perceived that they had strong autonomy support in the applied studio setting were more likely to perceive themselves as more highly task persistent than students who perceived that they had less autonomy support. Also, in the path model, student perceived competence was found to moderately mediate the effect of their perceived autonomy support on perceived task persistence. Thus, in the investigation of the relationship between perceived autonomy support and task persistence, the path analysis also revealed that something in addition to perceived autonomy support, namely perceived competence, served to explain the relationship between perceptions of autonomy support and task persistence. It is hoped that this study may promote further understanding of the optimal conditions in higher education for the persistence of practice for applied music study.

Abstract:
The greatest value to every organization is its staff. Staff training and raising of qualification are very important factors in the management of the staff. It helps to regularize the demands and goals of the staff with the demands and goals of the institution and thus to achieve the goals of the organization. Having analyzed the juristical and regulated documents and other reports on the issues of staff training, it can be stated that the system of the staff training has been established and it can function successfully. The planning of training and the way of administering the allocations are also provided. Staff training is organized taking into consideration the demands appointed by the employees, but not the future plans of the organization. Responding to the current situation employees do not envisage long-term perspective, so their demands only reflect their current situation. Although there exists an opinion that training is necessary for everyone, the efficiency of training is not ultimate because the knowledge of one employee is not spread further in the organization. The employees use the obtained knowledge only in their work.

Enghag, Margareta. "Miniprojects and Context Rich Problems : Case studies with qualitative analysis of motivation, learner ownership and competence in small group work in physics." Licentiate thesis, Linköping University, The Tema Institute, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-5568.

Abstract:

This thesis reports case studies of students working with context rich problems (CRP) and mini projects (MP) in physics in an upper secondary school class and in a physics teacher education class at university. The students report a big shift from physics in secondary school as fun and easy, to physics in upper secondary school as boring, difficult and with lack of time for reflections and physics talking, but they also found physics as interesting in itself. In order to study how group discussions in physics influence the students learning and to study the phenomena of students’ ownership of learning (SOL) we introduced CRP and MP. We video recorded five groups with 14 teacher students at university in the end of 2002, and five group with 15 students at upper secondary school during the beginning of their second physics course in the spring term in 2003. MP and CRP in physics were used as instructional settings in order to give students possibility to strengthen their holistic understanding and their possibilities to ownership. When students get the opportunity to manage their own learning and studying by open-ended tasks in physics, without the teacher determining all details of the performance, this gives more ownership of learning. The advantage of MPs and CRPs from the student’s point of view is more freedom to act, think and discuss and from the teacher’s view, to get insights of the students’ ability and how they really think in physics. The ownership is found to be crucial for motivation and development of competence.

Students’ ownership of learning (SOL) is the students’ influence/impact to affect tasks and the learning environment in such a way that the students have a real opportunity to achieve learning of physics.

Students’ ownership of learning (SOL) is found at two levels:

Group level: At the start of a task the SOL is determined by the design of the task. The choice of task, the performance (when, how, where), the level of result and presentatio n and report have to be determined by the students themselves.

Individual level: A person’s experiences and anomalies of understanding have created unique questions that can create certain aspects of the task that drive this person to be very active and highly motivated. This gives the person a high individual ownership. We developed hypotheses concerning the relation between ownership, motivation and competence and we see some evidence in the cases reported in this thesis. The importance of exploratory talks to enhance learning, and to see aspects of communication as part of the motivation are discussed in the model of ownership, motivation and competence that is proposed.

Abstract:
Improved standard of living has been followed by demographic changes and increased retirement age. Hence today’s organizations manage a diverse workforce of four generations, each of them with its own distinct attributes. Likewise, tomorrows organizations will consist of a generational diversity of five to six generations. Most research on generations has focused on characteristics and attitude differences. Drawing on the crucial and continual work of motivation - a journey without an end - this qualitative research study examined the most recent generation currently entering the labor force, Generation Z, and their workplace motivation. More specifically, the study explored if, and how, the generation is influenced by intrinsic motivation and its three basic needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness with regards to Self-Determination Theory and transformational leadership. Leaders role in promoting autonomy, competence and relatedness were analyzed at. The findings are based on semi-structured interviews with seven employees from Generation Z and three leaders. Our results showed that Generation Z is clearly impacted by and requesting intrinsic motivation in work life. In particular, the need for competence and a higher level of disloyalty towards the employer were portrayed. Furthermore, the strong demand for feedback among the generation was disclosed, suggesting more time-consuming measures from leaders.

Spiers, Megan Hayley. "“Becoming a Better Teacher” Exploring the cultural competence of non-Aboriginal teachers in a northern Australian boarding school." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2020. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2365.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation presents an exploration of the journey to cultural competence revealed in the lived experience of teachers and boarding staff in a boarding school in northern Australia. The qualitative inquiry sought to discover the causal attribution and motivations of culturally competent teachers and to enunciate the essential skills, knowledge and understanding required to improve the development of cultural competence in teachers new to the phenomenon: namely, that of being a non- Aboriginal teacher of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, defined in the study as teaching in classrooms of cultural difference. The research was unique in being focused on the teachers’ perspective in a boarding school, an educational context that is not explored in any prevalent way in the current corpus of scholarly literature. A qualitative research approach was applied, using phenomenological and ethnographic methods that revealed participants to be flexible teachers, caring and empathetic, without exception demonstrating an underlying ethos that entailed a service-oriented approach, an attitude of humility, equity and respect, a strong belief in social justice and endeavouring pursuit of quality teaching. The study found that effective teaching practice in classrooms of cultural difference required positive teacher-student relationships, community consultation and a whole-school approach to supporting teachers and students. Underpinning these culturally responsive policies and practices was an alertness by teachers to the unique complexity of the educational context and a deep commitment to Aboriginal students and the pedagogical practices that ensured cultural safety and security in the classroom. The important relationship between motivation, causal attribution and cultural competence was presented in the unique context of the research site. Although the Australian Curriculum mandates the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and clear frameworks have been developed for cultural responsiveness in schools, there is a dearth of research focused on how teachers actually acquire and demonstrate cultural competence in the classroom. In proving a leverageable relationship between motivation, attribution and cultural competence, research findings will assist teachers new to the complexities of multicultural classrooms to develop adaptive pedagogical practices, self-efficacy and connectedness. Further research is recommended, with potential research questions identified concerning improvement in government policy associated with practice in Aboriginal Education; the level of cultural competence or knowledge in preservice teachers during initial teacher education; and the provision of opportunities for schools to actively contribute to the professional development of teachers in becoming culturally competent
