Abstract:
What specific factors contribute to Silicon Valley’s world-renowned success as a high technology district? How significant is California’s rejection of specific regulation restricting the mobility of technical professionals via the nullification of all non-compete agreements? Using in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs seeking to start their own companies, I argue that the ability to effectively ignore non-compete agreements in Silicon Valley is a critical yet understudied premise underlying Silicon Valley’s success. Scholars seeking to understand Silicon Valley’s global success and continuing allure must turn their attention to the effects of this regulation. My findings suggest that an analysis not only of these regulations but of the lack of enforcement around such regulations needs to be a central focus in understanding how Silicon Valley emerged as a high technological powerhouse.

Abstract:
The present study was designed to examine whether social organization influences children's desire to compete and to achieve valued outcomes in important areas of life. One hundred and fifty-eight participants (71 males and 87 females) from three classes of grade 4 and four classes of grade 6 children participated in this study. Children completed a two-part questionnaire. The first part assessed their desire to play competitive and cooperative versions of an actual game in two types of social organizations, with their one closest friend and with their group of three closest friends. The second part measured children's beliefs about the effect of social organization on the children's achievements in four life domains. For part one, results indicated that children preferred to compete in a group versus a dyad, but the social organization had no effort on the desire to play a cooperative game. For part two, children believed their groups of friends would be happier for them if they were successful in a social situation; however, they believed their one closest friend would be happier for them if they were successful in either an academic or athletic situation. Results are discussed in terms of the educational and therapeutic implications of differing social organizations.

Abstract:
There has been slow growth among traditional residential real estate organization managers to communicate among the real estate industry successful e-commerce strategies. Grounded in diffusion of innovation theory, the purpose of this descriptive case study was to explore strategies traditional residential real estate managers use to compete with e-commerce real estate managers. The study population comprised traditional real estate office managers in western Nebraska who had at least 5 years' experience in developing successful e-commerce strategies and had sold a home in the past 5 years. I conducted a thematic analysis on the data collected via semistructured interviews and company documents. Four themes emerged from the analysis, including establishing and maintaining multiple e-commerce websites, regularly monitoring websites, establishing a visible presence on multiple e-commerce websites, and preparation to evolve as technology evolves. The study's implications for positive social change include the potential for traditional residential real estate organization managers' to develop and use new and useful strategies for overcoming barriers and effectively competing with e-commerce real estate organizations to remain competitive in the local economy through job creation, innovation, and competitiveness to sustain their businesses.

Abstract:
The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that well-established home recording studio owners in a city in the southeastern United States have used to compete in the recording industry. Four home recording studio owners served as participants. Each participant owned and operated a home studio business in the target area for longer than 10 years. Porter's 5 competitive forces model and Christensen's disruptive innovation theory were the conceptual lenses for this study. Interviews, direct observations, and website documents were the 3 data collection sources used to achieve methodological triangulation. The data were analyzed using Yin's 5-step thematic approach to qualitative data analysis: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. Four themes emerged from the analysis of the data: doing business and making money with friends, keeping the family safe and the studio secure, decoupling the clock from the creative process, and linking strategy to personal goals. The findings of this study may contribute to positive social change by economically empowering aspiring entrepreneurs to become small business owners and create new jobs that help strengthen their local economies.

Twomey, Patrick M. "The New Free Rider Problem: How States Compete Over Gambling Revenues." Thesis, Boston College, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/546.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: S.J. Richard A. McGowan
This thesis will examine the free rider problem in a unique setting: how states compete over gambling revenues. As the economy tightens, states continue to look for revenue streams to supplement their already strained budgets. Gambling is an attractive option for many states, as it is a steady and reliable source of income each month. With appealing funds available, different states have intensified their competition, authorizing new casinos on neighboring state borders to entice out-of-state visitors. States receive money from these visitors but are not responsible for their social problems, which they bring back to their home states. This phenomenon is a modern incarnation of the free rider problem. This paper explores three main questions. To begin, does the gambling market expand with the introduction of a new state's gambling facilities? Next, are states able to successfully reclaim revenues? Lastly, what are the effects of changes in tax rates on state revenues? These questions are examined in two regions. First, the newly authorized slots in Pennsylvania are having a direct impact on the casinos in Atlantic City, NJ. Also, a variety of tax changes in the Midwest states of Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri is shifting revenues among these three states. The free rider problem relating to states and gambling will continue to be an important and relevant issue for years to come

Cooperation within a competitive social situation is a essential part of human social life. This requires knowledge of teams and goals as well as an ability to infer the intentions of both teammates and opponents from sparse and noisy observations of their behavior. We describe a formal generative model that composes individual planning programs into rich and variable teams. This model constructs optimal coordinated team plans and uses these plans as part of a Bayesian inference of collaborators and adversaries of varying intelligence. We study these models in two environments: a complex continuous Atari game Warlords and a grid-world stochastic game, and compare our model with human behavior.

The China auto market is surging as the most fascinating place for the global auto industry today. All major foreign auto OEMs have been aggressively expanding their business in China, and expecting most of their global sales growth to come from China in the next decade. Following the move of foreign OEMs, many foreign auto suppliers also entered the China market, either to serve their traditional OEM customers, or to look for new business opportunities. Among them, one of the global exhaust system suppliers is very interested in China and invited us to conduct a case study on their China operations. In this thesis, we analyzed the dynamics of China auto market and the challenges to foreign OEMs and suppliers. Being driven by the market's rapid growth, tough competition, increasing margin pressures, global pressure on low-cost country sourcing and the Chinese government regulations, foreign OEMs have been increasing their efforts on the localization of manufacturing and product development. We first examine the current strategic role of China operations for major foreign OEMs in China, and the current and future requirements from foreign and Chinese OEMs on auto suppliers in China.
(cont.) Then we analyzed the China exhaust system industry in detail using the Porter's Five Forces. After obtaining a good understanding of how a foreign exhaust system supplier needs to compete in China, the authors focused on the global exhaust system supplier under the study and investigated how it has been competing in China market, what have been done successfully, and what could be done differently. The root causes of the issues were identified and the suggestions to address some of them were presented. In the last section, we extend the findings and suggestions to other foreign auto suppliers in China.

Francesca, Giovannini. "Cooperating to compete : the role of regional powers in global nuclear governance." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:b1e99751-f5be-48df-9446-3897839db348.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the role of regional powers in the development of regional nuclear regimes. Its central argument is that the devise of regional nuclear regimes through the leadership of regional powers is driven by both functional and strategic reasons. Functionally, regional nuclear institutions serve to provide more tailored solutions to respond to nuclear risks emerging at the local level. Strategically, the formation of sub-global institutions enables regional powers to exercise considerable influence on nuclear governance processes at both regional and global levels. And in situations where regional powers are dissatisfied with the global nuclear-institutional status quo, regional nuclear institution-building provides an incomparable opportunity to question that status quo and challenge, albeit indirectly, the preferences of the United States, their main architect. The type of leadership provided by regional powers in the establishment of regional nuclear regimes is affected dynamically by two relationships: the regional powers' relation with the United States and their relation with secondary regional players. The former relation is defined as 'global nuclear alignment' and refers to the degree of proximity of the regional power towards U.S. nuclear preferences. The latter is defined as 'regional embeddedness' and captures the degree of convergence of regional powers' nuclear preferences with those of its most proxy regional contender, as well as the level of commitment shown by the regional power vis-à-vis regional integration. The thesis argues that when both relations are low, divergence of the regional nuclear regime from global nuclear institutions is most acute. Conversely, when only one of the relations is high, the regional nuclear regime tends to converge with global nuclear institutions, either in goals or in methods. The theoretical framework is applied to investigate three cases of regional leadership as provided by Brazil, Indonesia and France in the establishment of the regional nuclear regimes in their respective regions.

Doole, Isobel. "How small and medium sized enterprises learn to compete effectively on international markets." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2000. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/3150/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to develop insights into the nature of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that are effective in competing internationally, over the longer term. It therefore aims to provide a better understanding of the behaviour that engenders this capability. Its contributory value lies in the development of the new perspectives which emerged from inductive theory development grounded in longitudinal data collected between1996-1999. Traditionally explanations for the success of SMEs in export markets, it is suggested, have been sought in the marketing mix paradigm rooted in exchange theory. This thesis draws from a range of literature in seeking an understanding of the behaviours observed. In developing a substantive theory to explain the dynamic nature of firms that sustain their competitive effectiveness on international markets this thesis then seeks explanations from the organisational learning paradigm. This study follows the tradition of the naturalistic paradigm and as such the research was a phenomenological study of an exploratory and qualitative nature. The naturalistic paradigm recognises the importance of the subjective experiences of individuals and groups. In the verstehen tradition this study stresses the importance of the informant as the primary source of information. The aim of the inquiry was to develop an ideographic body of knowledge, the emphasis being on explanation and understanding rather than the identification of general and universal laws. The epistemological stance taken required an inductive approach to theory building. Examining the firms longitudinally was the means by which the author was able to take an holistic view of the international activities of the firms studied and focus on the change processes and challenges faced in the study period. The central proposition of this thesis is that the firms that compete effectively on international markets exhibit a positive marketing orientation, and have a strong core purpose on which is generated a clear internationally based strategic direction. It is further proposed that over a period of time, through an iterative process of strategy development, firms build a sustainable competitive advantage in their international markets and develop the ability to maintain this advantage, even when faced with hostile challenges in their international markets. Firms, it is suggested through their relationships, build a virtual structure to their international markets, which provide the means through which a knowledge of their markets is acquired, and an input is made to the strategy development process by external partners. However, it is through the dynamic processes of organisational learning that SMEs develop these capabilities and so enhance their ability to sustain a competitive advantage over a period of time.

Abstract:
Non-compete covenants are clauses in employment contracts that forbid employees from competing with their former employers during a given time period. Recent literature has identified non-compete covenants as a new type of entry barrier to entrepreneurship within high-tech industries, impeding regional innovation, growth and employment. In Europe, the legal regime is highly heterogeneous, suggesting that certain regions might gain a competitive advantage in innovation. This study uses Fixed Effects regression and Poisson Fixed Effects regression models to investigate the ways in which non-compete covenants effect how venture capital investments stimulate regional innovation and entrepreneurship. The data set was constructed using data from The European Patent Office, the Eurostat, the World Bank and the OECD Economic Outlook. Ius Laboris overview was used to assess the enforceability of non-compete covenants in sample countries. The results show that increased supply of venture capital increases innovative activity in all regions. Relative to countries that enforce non-compete covenants, countries that restrict the use of these contracts experience higher rates of patenting activity. The level of enforceability was not found to have significant effects on new firm formation. The results suggest that financial intermediates and the legal regime have an important role in promoting regional innovation.

Abstract:
In the last decades, there have been significant changes in the world, such as the globalization of economies, technological advances and the growing importance of information and knowledge, which led to a change and demanded the constant adaptation of Management practices in organizations. The Portuguese companies are mainly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and its contribution is of extreme relevance for the development of the national economy. However, SMEs have very specific characteristics, they are composed of very simple, heterogeneous and volatile structures, with centralized management. In these companies, there is a weak and limited capacity regarding the resources available, which limits their growth. In a period of economic recovery, in which Portugal manifested the need for various reforms and restrictive policies due to the crisis context in the recent years, one of the recovery measures is to increase the competitiveness of these companies, to encourage entrepreneurship, innovation and internationalization. To this end, is available a national program, Portugal 2020 (PT2020), a Program of Incentive Systems based on European Funds, and more specifically the COMPETE 2020 Program, the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program, to increase SME´s competitiveness and internationalization. This report is based on an internship which took place in the Projects Department of a Management, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology consulting company, named Globalseven - Business Consulting (Globalseven). This internship allowed the realization of a study where, through a qualitative methodology based on participatory observation techniques and documentation analysis, it is intended to describe and analyze the COMPETE 2020 Program as a source of encouragement and support of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Internationalization of Portuguese SMEs. Thus, the study focuses on the preparation of Projects addressing the various stages of this elaboration, using as an example a Globalseven´s client, the APPB company, to illustrate de procedures from the beginning of the project to the investment´s planning, to the economic and financial feasibility study, to later be carried out the application of the projects to COMPETE 2020 Program, more specifically to the Incentive System (SI) for Qualified and Creative Entrepreneurship and Internationalization of the SMEs. xii Considering the study carried out at Globalseven, it was found that Globalseven has consistent project planning processes and it is noted that COMPETE 2020 Program is an important support and incentive to the entrepreneurship, innovation and internationalization of Portuguese SMEs. It was verified that, during the period of the internship, all the projects carried out for Globalseven's SME clients were candidates for the IS in Qualified and Creative Entrepreneurship and the IS Internationalization, being perceived by the companies as a form of encouragement as well as the necessary financial support to advance with their projects, facilitating the acquisition of resources needed by the entrepreneur. Based on the conclusions obtained with the present study we intend to suggest proposals of perspectives that allow to add value to the process of planning and elaboration of projects in Globalseven, with the objective of creating value for the host entity as well as for their customers.

Abstract:
Home/school/community factors of student jobs, extracurricular activities, church activities, community activities, family activities, and television watching were examined to determine the relationship between these factors and the time students spent on homework. Two hundred forty-seven high school students were used as subjects. A student time log and questionnaire were developed and used to collect the data. Eight students were closely examined through case studies. When time spent on homework was correlated with time spent at a job, the results were strongly negative (r = -.89). Time spent on homework was moderately correlated (r= + .46) with time spent in extracurricular activities. When time spent on homework was correlated with time spent in family activities, the results were moderately negative (r= -.41 ). Time spent on homework was moderately correlated (r= +.64) with time spent in church activities. When time spent on homework was correlated with time spent watching television, the results were strongly negative (r = -.77). No statistically significant difference was found between the number of conflicts above average students reported doing homework and the number of conflicts below average students reported doing homework. A call was made for parents, students, and school personnel to beware of the possible negative effects of students spending excessive time at jobs, watching television, and in extracurricular activities.

Abstract:
After given due consideration to the need of the original hyperandrogenic regulations and the constant pressure from society upon the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (hereafter IAAF) to take action against the presumed unfair competitive edge which such an athlete posed, it cannot be said that a female athlete’s natural levels of testosterone should be considered prejudicial in cases where such an excess is naturally produced within the athlete’s body. Any regulation that impedes upon the rights and freedoms of an athlete must be drafted in a manner that bears the highest degree of credibility and evidence, including the support of several cross-examinations of the evidential value before the promulgation thereof. The IAAF’s hyperandrogenic regulations fail to meet this extrinsic threshold and instead announces it in the absence of trailed and proven factual scientific evidence. The CAS board identified a lack of legality due to insufficient scientific evidence presented by the IAAF in order to justify the need of such regulations. This study found that Hyperandrogenic athletes faced numerous accounts of prejudice as a result of the regulations and the enforcement thereof by the IAAF. After the CAS panel established that several of the Hyperandrogenic athlete’s rights were infringed upon by the regulations, in an attempt to evade legal consequences, the IAAF withdrew the hyperandrogenic regulations leading to the abolishment of all legal proceedings linked thereto. The IAAF then retaliated months later with the publication of their DSD regulations. After facing an immense amount of critique by professionals globally, a communal consensus was reached that the DSD regulation was even weaker than its pre-successor. This study firstly investigates the scientific evidence, both in manner and in the hypothesis, presented by the IAAF in support of their DSD regulations. Secondly, it will criticise the legitimacy of the Bermon test and its publication in the British Journal of Sport Medicine (hereinafter the BJSM). Comparisons are made between hyperandrogenism and collateral cases involving similar medical conditions. Attention has also been drawn to the legal recourse currently available to affected athletes. Hereinafter, opinions and suggestions will be made as to an appropriate, and a law-abiding way as to how hyperandrogenism should be regulated.

Abstract:
This paper is the result of a field study made at a company that works within the transport- and logistics industry. I have used both primary information (interviews) and secondary data (homepage, sustainability report, business magazine etc.) to find out what the company does to be able to compete in the industry. Theories and models have been related to the topics that were generated by the result. A few of the theories are Porter’s value chain, Normann’s Common Creating of Value and Abrahamsson’s et al Strategic flexibility. Used concepts are competitive advantage, service, quality and flexibility among others. The result shows that the company in question, through high quality in their service offering, delivers exceptional service to customers who tend to stay and continue the cooperation with their supplier. The quality that the company appears to stand for has its base in not allowing a chase for lowest possible costs be most important to them, but to stick to trustworthy subcontractors that can perform effectively and flexibly, following quick fluctuations in demand. Another base for the company’s quality lies in its engaged and competent employees. My conclusion is that it appears to be possible for a company to compete for customers by maintaining a high degree of service, strategic flexibility and motivated employees. Through these elements the company seems to be able to can ask a defendable and reasonable price for its services and thereby create sustainable and long-term profitability.

Right now smartphones and tablets coexist with other systems, since they offer a different kind of experience than other platforms. This is both due to technological constraints as well as the way people generally play on touch devices. People do not usually play their games for hours on touch-based devices, which is more common on other kinds of systems. With technological advancements, smartphones and tablets might become serious competitors to gaming consoles.

Redding, L. E. "A strategy formulation methodology for companies seeking to compete through IVHM enabled service delivery systems." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2012. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/7771.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis makes a contribution to knowledge through the development of a strategy formulation methodology for manufacturing organisations who wish to compete through advanced technology enabled service delivery systems. The research introduces the reader to the concept of Product Service Systems (PSS) and the process of ‘servitization’. It identifies Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) as one of a set of enabling technological applications, which if adopted, can facilitate the supply of “intelligent” or “informated” products. Such products enable the manufacturer to monitor the condition and usage of these products ‘in the field’ thereby enabling aligned service solutions to be offered. A five phase research programme is undertaken which seeks to understand the principles of IVHM and gain knowledge of the level of practitioner awareness of the concept and related issues. The research then explores and defines the concept of the service delivery system, and identifies and reviews operations strategy formulation methodologies. A pre-pilot methodology is adopted which is then tested via case application to generate a list of requirements and specification. A pilot methodology is designed to suit the specification and tested via industrial case studies and expert practitioner evaluation. The pilot methodology is finally refined prior to verification and validation through industrial case application and further expert practitioner evaluation. This research delivers a sequential and iterative strategy formulation methodology which fills a gap that is identified through a state of the art literature review and practitioner survey. The documented methodology is the result of a structured development and test programme and is shown to be feasible, useable and useful by test and validation by numerous manufacturing organisations. It makes a significant contribution to knowledge. This is attained through seeking to understand the organisation’s actual competitive position, its alignment to the stakeholder’s service requirements, and organisational structure. It also offers alignment relative to the level of technology adoption when offering intelligent/informated products. The research provides a strategy formulation methodology to deliver an enhanced service delivery system.

Abstract:
To determine if general, community hospitals show evidence of specializing in the nation's six highest volume, highest revenue-generating service lines, 2003-2007 data of hospitals throughout Florida, Virginia, and Nevada were analyzed using backward deletion, stepwise regression. Service lines selected for study were cardiac surgery, cardiology, invasive cardiology, orthopedics, labor and delivery, and pulmonary services. Results do show evidence of specialization, but characteristics of hospitals vary by service line. Findings suggest that the general, community hospital, traditionally a full-service provider, may be undergoing transformation including specialization. The study demonstrates the usefulness of studying specialization at the service line level.

Abstract:
This research study sets out to determine what incentives and programs are being utilized throughout the country and in Texas to keep historic residential neighborhoods maintained and vibrant. For this purpose, federal, state and local programs have been surveyed to discover what programs are being utilized and which might be successful in Texas cities. Also surveyed were prospective homebuyers to determine what incentives and maintenance assistance could induce them to purchase, or to consider purchasing, an older home versus a new home in a builder community. The responses of the prospective homebuyers’ survey indicates that there is a good deal of interest in older homes among prospective homebuyers. A program to assist them should be based on education, making pertinent information and resources available, and providing financial relief for those purchasing and rehabilitating an older or historic home.

Leichter, Paola J. "A Bitter Pill to Swallow| The Negative Impact of Non-Compete Clauses in Physician Employment Contracts." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1596166.

Full text
Abstract:

In today's modern world of medicine, most, if not all, physician employment contracts contain non-compete clauses. Non-competes, also known as restrictive covenants, essentially function as restraints on trade. Non-competes act as a restraint in the medical arena by preventing physicians from taking patients with them when physicians begin new employment or, alternatively, depart on a self-employment basis. They also restrain physicians from competitively practicing medicine in a predetermined geographic area for a specified period of time.

Restraints on trade have a long noteworthy history. One case that emphasized the importance of having checks and balances on such restraints is Lochner v. New York. While not relating to the practice of medicine and non-compete provisions, Lochner is nonetheless an important case to the analysis of non-compete provisions in physician employment contracts. Lochner is necessary to the discussion of non-competes because it emphasizes how the history of restrictions on restraints on trade have changed so that now private parties, and not just the government, are allowed to implement restrictions. Additionally, these restrictions vary depending on the profession and where professionals practice.

Non-compete provisions are found in contracts created by both small private medical practices, as well as bigger entities, such as hospitals and managed care organizations. Therefore, this is not an issue limited to the size of the practice. The physician-patient relationship has gradually become more and more of an impersonal one due to managed care organizations and legislation such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This does not, however, mean that physicians and patients approve of this interference and push towards an impersonal relationship. Thus, if patients are unhappy with the resulting impersonal relationship from managed care plans and legislation, patients may suffer further from these non-compete clauses interfering with the patients' utilization of physician services.

These clauses hurt not only the physicians trying to practice, but also have the capacity to conflict with patient choice in regard to selecting the physician they want for treatment purposes. More importantly, such non-competes negatively interfere with the continuity of patient care. It is for these aforementioned reasons that it would behoove the American Medical Association (AMA) to model its non-compete guidelines after those found in the American Bar Association (ABA), which strictly limit the use of such non-compete provisions in attorney employment contracts.

Janrattana, Jirasak. "How can Small and Medium Enterprise retail business in Thailand successfully compete through Business Model Innovation?" Thesis, University of Manchester, 2017. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/how-can-small-and-medium-enterprise-retail-business-in-thailand-successfully-compete-through-business-model-innovation(4bf8547d-7a76-49ee-9776-e9ed7dbf0c39).html.

Full text
Abstract:
Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) retail businesses in many countries, including Thailand, are facing challenges of high competition, as modern retail formats have grown rapidly in many Asian countries such as Singapore, Taiwan, China and Thailand (Howard, 2009). Thus, SME retail Businesses are facing an "innovate or die" situation, as non-adapting retail firms have always been and will continue to be driven out of the business (Evans, 2011). A new critical capability of retail business is the ability to configure and reconfigure its processes into a coherent blueprint - known in other words as a Business Model (Sorescu et al., 2011). The research question becomes "How can SME retail Business in Thailand successfully compete through Business Model Innovation?" Business Model Innovation requires system wide changes, since modifying one component always has network effects on other components (Tikkanen et al., 2005). There is no fixed method or successful formula that all companies will adopt; therefore disciplined experimentation and adaptation is recommended (Berman, 2011; Chesbrough, 2010; McGrath, 2010; Mitchell et al., 2003; Teece, 2010). However, most past studies on innovation are about large companies (Tim, 2004) and not many articles cover empirical studies on Business Model Innovation. In particular, few studies address the dynamic view (Demil and Lecocq, 2010; Svejenova et al., 2010; Sosna et al., 2010).This research focuses on the implementation of Business Model Innovation within SME retail business. The research uses a methodology called Action Research, and was conducted within the researcher's organization, which is a SME retail business in Thailand. This overcomes the practical challenges of studying SME business, which is related to limited opportunity to conduct empirical research. The study was conducted over the 4 year period from October 2010 to August 2014 by implementing Business Model Innovation in order to exploit opportunities in rural areas. Business Model concepts were employed as sources of innovation and units of analysis. Action Research consists of multiple cycles of changes and adaptation. It was found that Business Model concepts can be represented at different levels of abstraction from reality. At a high level of abstraction, the Business Model Canvas helps to understand the overview of the firm's business logic in a broad way, and provide ideas about what can be adapted. At the operational level, the Retailing Business Model provides a structural approach to the conceptualisation, planning and implementation of activities that support high level changes. In all, Business Model Innovation can be conceptualised as an ongoing learning process similar to the iterative cycles of Action research. These cycles consist of constructing actions, planning, taking actions and evaluating actions. The Business Model concepts at different levels of abstraction can be used for understanding and planning, as well as to capture learning experiences, both on the high level and on the operational level. Therefore, Business Model Innovation is a dynamic process where changes and learning happen continuously. Such a process enables SME retail businesses to improve their understanding of their Business Model and thus improve their chances of success?

Abstract:
This study examines how MNCs manage challenges when operating in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). These are challenges such as uncertain environment because of bureaucracy and corruption and also difficulties to reach consumers because of poor infrastructure, dispersed population and cultural differences. The analysis of our case company ABB suggests that firms operating in SSA need to build long-term relationships, as well as long experience and a brand with well-attached references in order to reach the customer. To deal with the uncertain environment there is a need for being well prepared beforehand and having ability to adapt easily. Also, our study suggests that to be a Swedish MNC could be a competitive advantage in SSA. The role of NGOs is not that big for an established player like ABB, as literature suggests it would be, but will perhaps grow bigger in the future when more companies want to enter the SSA market. We urge researchers to continue the quest of finding new perspectives when it comes to doing business in SSA, as there are still plenty of topics that need to be covered.

Richards, Othello Lennox. "When Eyes and Ears Compete: Eye Tracking How Television News Viewers Read and Recall Pull Quote Graphics." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6801.

Full text
Abstract:
This study applied dual processing theory, the theory of working memory, and the theory of cue summation to examine how the video and audio in a television news story interact with or against each other when the story uses pull quote graphics to convey key information to viewers. Using eye-tracking, the study produced visual depictions of exactly what viewers look at on the screen when the words in the reporter's voice track match the text in the pull quote graphic verbatim, when the reporter summarizes the text in the graphic, and when the reporter's voice track ignores the text in the pull quote. The study tested the effect on recall when viewers were presented with these three story conditions—high redundancy, medium redundancy, and low redundancy, respectively. Key findings included the following: first, that stories with low redundancy resulted in lower recall and memory sensitivity scores (a measure of memory strength) than pull quotes that the reporter either summarized or read verbatim on the air. Second, it was found that neither high-redundancy nor medium-redundancy stories were superior or inferior to the other when looking at the effect on recall and memory sensitivity. And finally, in high-, medium-, and low-redundancy conditions, subjects stated that they relied more on the reporter's narration than the pull quote to get information. The study states possible implications for news producers and reporters and suggests future research in the broadcast television news industry.

Abstract:
Sharing economy businesses have increasingly began to inhibit the competitive landscape of many different industries. Their growth can be primary connected to general digitalization developments. At its core, the sharing economy concept is built around efficiently using excess resources. In this thesis, it is argued that sharing economy businesses should be considered disruptive innovations, partly because they present incumbent firms with significant challenges. While the sharing economy business concept facilitates effective peer-to-peer exchange, and in the process provides new possibilities of employment, customer-centric innovation and market development, it can also be tied to a decreasing demand for goods and services offered by incumbents in the same marketplace. Examples of businesses built around the sharing economy concept include – but are not limited to – Airbnb, Vrbo, Uber, Lyft, Zilok, and Hygglo. Prior to the beginning of this research project, very little research regarding potential strategic countermeasures for incumbent firms to employ against sharing economy competitors had been conducted. As a result, this thesis serves the purpose of investigating the impact of sharing economy businesses from the perspective of incumbents and theorizing about potential responses. In order to facilitate this purpose, the hospitality industry was chosen as a representative of an industry that has experienced sharing economy business entrances and sharing economy business competition to a researchable extent. Through this thesis and its accompanying qualitative data collection process, several challenges that are presented to incumbents as a result of sharing economy business entrances were identified. Additionally, a focus was placed on evaluating both tried and prospective strategic measures, using existing theory and insights from the data collection to discover the key aspects needed for the development of potential responses to sharing economy businesses. A similar process was undertaken regarding business models, as the crucial and core elements of a perceived successful business model needed to be identified. The findings generated by the data collection process were then analyzed using a thematic analysis, centered on the themes of: Strategic Management in the Hospitality Industry; Current Trends in the Hospitality Sector; Fundamentals of a Successful Hotel Business; and Future Strategy Suggestions and Industry Prospects. After conducting the three identification and analyzation stages, the findings were discussed in the penultimate chapter of the thesis, where the findings’ relation to existing theory was explored. Following the discussion, the possibility to answer the main research question of this thesis appeared. After discussing our findings, our analysis, and the connection to existing theory, we were able to conclude that incumbent firms can successfully compete with sharing economy businesses. Specifically, they could ensure this through strategic changes and business model innovations built around efficiently exploiting the incumbents’ internal strengths and advantages that are currently not easily imitable by sharing economy businesses. As such, they should look to create, deliver, and communicate unique value to its customers, and suggestions on how this could be achieved by both incumbent hospitality managers and others are provided.

Miller, Grant. "Competencies required for an emerging market SME to compete in the developed market for design, development and manufacturing projects." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/24701.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explored the requirements and subsequent competencies needed for an emerging market SME to operate in the developed markets on design, development and manufacturing projects. This was analysed by first exploring the differences in the requirements of the two markets and then determining what competencies a typical SA company would have to acquire to be competitive in the DM. The case was explored through a study of an SA SME operating in the design and development market, who was in the process of internationalising into the US and European markets. Data was gathered through a desk analysis of specifications from each market as well as in-depth interviews with the firm’s key decision makers and customers from each market. The first outcome was that there was a difference in the requirements of the two markets, namely the level of detail and sophistication of the DM specifications, the greater need for a competitive product in the DMs, both in pricing and functionality, the requirement for socially ethical practices and that EMF products need to overcome the negative COO effects. The final outcome was that EM SME’s needed to improve on their current competency set, namely an adaptation of the development process, sourcing practices and improvement in technical competencies. The firm also developed a method of introducing their product to the DM, such that the COO effect was reduced. This was done through the use of SA OEM’s and DM MNE’s supplying SA. Copyright

Abstract:
The global cosmetics industry was not greatly affected by the economic recessions over the last years. As cosmetics are consumer goods that do not require huge investment and provide comfort and well-being to their users, they tend to remain on consumers’ shopping lists even during recession. However, the global competitive scenario shows volatility and dynamism of market needs, driving firms of different sizes to remain flexible and efficient so as to better respond to customer requirements. Research on the cosmetics sector tends to focus on marketing strategy and consumer behavior. Only few investigations look into global competitive strategies, and even fewer into the strategic alliances established by firms in this sector. The present research aims to verify the adequacy of the strategy of L Oréal Latin America, considering its alliances and the global competitive strategy of L Oréal Group. Because of the importance of taking into account the firm’s specific contingencies and its contemporaneity, the case study methodology was adopted. Multiple sources and means to collect the necessary data were used in accordance with the strategy of data and method triangulation, so as to ensure results’ consistency. Data interpretation and analysis were carried out in keeping with the research’s theoretical references and with the help of the Macedo-Soares, 2011, Global SNA framework (Global Strategic Network Analysis). The results confirmed what was verified in cases of other sectors: the global alliances create more opportunities than threats, and in many cases the relational global opportunities mitigate the non-relational global threats.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
The goal of the study was to identify the ideal positioning strategy for the South African Apple and Pear industry to successfully compete as a supplier against Chile in the European retail environment. The hypothesis of the study states that the ideal positioning strategy for South Africa is a combination between a Corporate and a Generic strategy. The Corporate strategy would focus on what wants to be achieved while the Generic strategy would focus on how it needs to be achieved. A strategy framework combining available corporate strategies with available Generic strategies identified 12 potential corporate/generic strategy combinations. The outcome of the study would be the selection of the combination most suited to take the South African Apple and Pear industry into the future. The research in this study included a full description of both the South African and Chilean industries discussing the physical, economic and political environment as well as the available human resources and industry structures. A thorough description of the European retail environment was followed by an external analysis identifying the key success factors required to successfully supply this market. The key success factors were used as the framework to do an internal situational analysis of the South African and Chilean industries. The internal situational analysis identified the key areas that South Africa needs to focus on to improve its competitive position against Chile in the European retail market. These key areas were pivotal in the selection of the optimal corporate / generic strategy combination. The outcome of the study identified a Market penetration strategy (Corporate strategy) through the use of a Differentiation (Generic strategy) as most suited to improve the competitiveness of the South African Apple and Pear industry. This strategy will grow demand and market share for South African apples and pears in the existing EU retail market for its existing product range by focusing on: 1. Improving the retail value and sales volume of SA apples and pears in the European retail market through:  In-store promotional and media campaigns that will create awareness of South African apples and pears and SA Tourism as well as educate and communicate consumers about the attributes and different uses of SA apples and pears as well as SA Tourism opportunities.  The identification of all South African apples and pears through on-pack branding by using the “South Africa, Alive with Possibility brand”. In-pack information booklets providing nutritional information and recipes for South African apples and pears. 2. Communication of real time supply information to European retailers and importers through:  E-mailing retail buyers direct website links giving them access to the weekly South African Pome Fruit newsletters indicating crop estimates, weekly inspection volumes and shipment volumes per variety. 3. Active engagements with the SA government to gain their involvement and financial support for promotional activities in retail stores through:  Active lobbying by industry representatives for the involvement of SA Tourism, the Department of Trade and Industry and the International Marketing Council in promotional campaigns where SA Apples and Pears are used as a vehicle to enhance the image of the South Africa amongst consumers, retailers and importers. 4. The active communication at an industry level to European retailers and importers about the South African Apple and Pear industry’s progress regarding the management of the carbon footprint of its products as well as the production of residue free fruit through.  Yearly visits by industry representatives to European retailers and importers where South African progress reports in these areas are presented. The assessment highlighted that South Africa is relatively strong throughout the value chain activities but that the lack of a unified industry whereby its strengths are communicated to consumers, retailers and importers, has led to South Africa loosing market share to Chile.

Abstract:
Problem: Due to the promises of retailer benefits, self-service technologies (SSTs) are becoming a common sight in the Swedish grocery retail setting. The mere installation of SSTs is yet not enough to make the consumer adopt them.  Purpose: By asking, “how is the consumer’s attitude towards technology affecting his/her acceptance of the grocery retail self-scanning system”, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the effect of the technology readiness theory on the technology acceptance model. Thus, practically investigate how and why some consumers accept, whereas other consumers reject SSTs.  Theory: The direct mediating effect of four consumer-specific technology adoption predictors: optimism, innovativeness, insecurity and discomfort, are investigated in relation to two system-specific technology adoption predictors: perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Throughout the theoretical framework, and in combination with SST literature, eight hypotheses are constructed.  Method: A positivist research approach with a deductive reasoning is adopted. To answer the hypotheses, a quantitative method implemented through a survey strategy is chosen. Statistical testing of the 192 collected answers follows the quantitative data gathering.  Conclusion: The results show that multiple consumer-specific characteristics have a direct mediating effect on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Thus, the consumer’s attitude towards technology plays a significant role in the consumer’s propensity to accept SSTs, such as the grocery retail self- scanning system. This implies that retailers aiming at developing efficient and competitive self-service strategies should pro-actively consider the “techno-ready” consumer attributes. In particular: optimism and discomfort.

Changes in the profiles of professionals and of businesses, and the contact between the two, now calls for the need to mark out lines and offer evaluations of what the future holds, both in terms of education and professionally. Added to this circumstance is the fact that immersion in the European Higher Education Area requires an assessment of educational quality and a greater match between qualifications and the demands of the job market. The cornerstone of this research is to make visible the changes between the professional and academic spheres, in this case within the very specific framework of the Bachelor’s Degree in Design university course, in the Graphics mention. In this context, this research is represented through a case study at EINA, University School of Design and Art of Barcelona, which is formalised in the construction of a diagnostics system that can be applied at different times and periodically, the aim of which is to identify the level of the match between the academic skills taught at the school and the professional skills required in the professional sphere of graphic design. It aims, therefore, to be a tool to help discover the demands of the professional sphere in the sector and to update the skills of the Bachelor’s Degree in Design. It is evaluative research of the transfer of learning to the workplace, which uses a mixed methodological proposal, where quantitative and qualitative research have been applied consecutively to obtain different types of results of interest, seeing them as two complementary visions. The triangulation of the results, both of data and methodologically and instrumentally, is used as the main principle for reinforcing reliability and validity, offering meticulousness and scientific credibility to the research. In the same vein, the use of a systematic, reproducible and reasoned methodology, through the Delphi method, offers a collective vision of different groups of experts through an inter-subjective consensus, which provides basic information for attaining the research aims. This way, it reaches an overview of the match between the academic and professional skills in the area of graphic design today, and a preview of the profile of the graphic designer of the future, offering valuable information to predict the needs of the professional sphere and be able to propose both curricular and methodological changes in the syllabus of the Bachelor’s Degree in Design.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research on probiotics has increased over the past years, which led to commercialization of a number of probiotic supplements and functional foods. In vitro assays such as tolerance to acid and bile, adhesion to mucus and epithelial cells, antimicrobial activity and antibiotic resistance tests are performed to screen lactic acid bacteria for probiotic properties. Enterococcus mundtii ST4SA produces an antimicrobial peptide (peptide ST4SA) with activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Lactobacillus plantarum 423 produces plantaricin 423, a typical class II bacteriocin, active against a number of Gram-positive bacteria. A gastro-intestinal model (GIM) simulating the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) of infants, was developed to study the survival of E. mundtii ST4SA and L. plantarum 423 and evaluate them as possible probiotics. Growth of the two strains in the GIM was compared to the growth of commercially available probiotics. Infant milk formulations were used as growth medium. Changes in pH, the addition of bile salt and pancreatic juice, and intestinal flow rates were controlled by peristaltic pumps linked to a computer with specifically designed software. Strain ST4SA was sensitive to low pH and high concentrations of bile salts. Growth of strain ST4SA was repressed in the first part of the GIM, however, the cells recovered in the ileum. Strain 423 was also sensitive to acidic conditions. However, the cells withstood the presence of bile and pancreatin in the first part of the GIT. Neither of the two strains displayed bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity. Both strains were resistant to amoxicillin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, cefadroxil, roxithromycin, meloxicam, doxycycline, erythromycin, novobiocin, rifampicin, tetracyclin, bacitracin, oflaxacin and cephazolin, anti-inflammatory drugs Na+- diklofenak and ibuprofen, and painkillers codeine terprim hydrate aminobenzoic acid, metamizole aspirin and paracetamol. Strain 423 was resistant to ciprofloxacin. Genes encoding cytolysin, non-cytolysin β-hemolysin and cell aggregation substances were detected on the genome of strain ST4SA but they were not expressed. L. plantarum 423 does not contain genes encoding gelatinase, cell aggregation, enterococcus surface protein, hemolysin, non-cytolysin β- hemolysin and enterococcus endocarditis antigen. Both strains inhibited the growth of Listeria monocytogenes ScottA in the GIM. Survival of the strains improved when used in combination and compared well with the survival of commercially available probiotics. Adhesion to epithelial cells is an important prerequisite for bacterial colonization in the GIT. The adhesion of E. mundtii ST4SA and L. plantarum 423 was studied using Caco-2 (human colon carcinoma epithelial) cells. Both strains revealed good adhesion compared to other probiotic strains. No correlation was found between hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation and adhesion to Caco-2 cells. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicaments had a negative effect on adhesion. Different combinations of proteins were involved in the adhesion of E. mundtii ST4SA and L. plantarum 423 to Caco-2 cells. E. mundtii ST4SA, L. plantarum 423 and L. monocytogenes ScottA were stained with fluorescent dyes to visualize adhesion to Caco-2 cells. Adhesion of L. monocytogenes ScottA to Caco-2 cells was not reduced in the presence of strains ST4SA and 423. Cell-free culture supernatants of both strains inhibited the invasion of L. monocytogenes ScottA. The cell structure of Caco-2 cells changed in the presence of L. monocytogenes ScottA. Strains ST4SA and 423 protected Caco-2 cells from deforming.
Babamelk formules is as groeimedium gebruik. L. plantarum 423 was bestand teen ciprofloksasien.

Abstract:
The Brazilian oil and gas industry is currently one of the most attractive worldwide. Investors, equipment manufacturers and oil companies continuously seek ways to enter in this market to sustain its competitiveness. Due to the complexity and high investments required to operate in this sector, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions become mandatory to benefit from such opportunities. Thus, the aim of this thesisis to analyze strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions of FMC Technologies with their key players in the oil and gas sector. The investigation was conducted using a case study methodology, with triangulation of methods. The survey data were collected by different ways: analysis of documents, telematic and perception research, using surveys and predominantly structured interviews. The data treatment was based on the theoretical framework, pursuant to a review of the relevant literature, with the support of the analytical tool GlobalSNA Framework Macedo-Soares (2011). The study results showed a match between the strategic objectives for the company and explained the alliances and M&A transactions with partners, providing increased opportunities and reducing threats in the industry level. As a result from the research, it is recommendedto conduct new studies focused on the main competitors of FMC Technologies, whose international operations are also based on global alliances in the oil and gas sector.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the business angels activity in Portugal and the impact of the COMPETE Program on firm entry and job creation. This program, created in 2010, includes a co-investment fund for business angels to support the creation of new ventures with innovative potential. There is strong evidence that this financing line has stimulated entrepreneurial activity in Portugal. Using a mandatory database which includes all private firms in Portugal, we select two cross-sectional datasets, collected before and after the COMPETE Program. Through a difference-in-differences approach, we observe that this program is associated with an increase of eleven new firms, primarily among small firms, and an increase of four employees per start-up, although the later effect is not significant. Additionally using data collected through a questionnaire, we analyze Portuguese business angels? main characteristics and evaluate their propensity to invest. We found that Portuguese business angels are predominantly middle-aged male with university education, usually in the fields of business sciences and economy. They also have entrepreneurial, managerial and consulting prior experience. Regarding their propensity to invest, we find that Portuguese business angels have a positive probability to invest up to 50,000 euros/year and they often invest semiannually or annually.

Abstract:
Football Industry has changed a lot during the last decades and turned into more than just sports or entertaining, into a more complex management challenge. It is now influenced by and influences international environment and organizations, as there is an increasing number of followers and money generation associated with this Sport. For all the complexity and diversity that can be found in the Football business, which cannot be studied all at once, this dissertation’s focus was to find out how competitive the Portuguese Football Clubs are between each other. Although the findings haven’t been compared to other football leagues, it is a starting point to further compare with other international leagues.
