Full textToday, grid-connected photovoltaic systems are becoming an increasingly important part of renewable energy. The power conversion system's heart is the grid-connected interface converter based on power electronics. The single-phase inverter is the best compromise for low power applications as an interface for power conversion. Single-stage systems offer higher efficiency and lower cost and size. However, the PV voltage drops under low irradiance conditions, leading to inverter shut down and the total injected power loss.As a consequence, single-stage systems suffer from a low operating range. This work addresses the critical issues of the single-stage single-phase grid-connected PV system, including reliability and efficiency. A fast terminal sliding mode combined with direct power control is proposed in the first part. It is associated with a maximum power point tracking algorithm with power output. Simulations and experimental results on a 1kW test bench show the proposal's effectiveness in terms of dynamic performance, low total harmonic distortion and robustness to irradiance variations. Single-phase power systems also face pulsating power at twice the mains frequency on the DC bus. This pulsating power should not be transferred to the PV side as it reduces the efficiency of the solar panel. Thus, the second part of this work proposes a dual-function decoupling circuit: it mitigates pulsating power and compensates for the voltage drop. Thanks to the following additional power converters, these objectives are fulfilled: a low power flyback and an H-bridge. The hybrid compensator increases the inverter's operating range, prevents its shutdown, and increases the system reliability. A 1kW experimental bench has been designed to evaluate the proposal for several operating points. The steady-state results show that the hybrid compensator can simultaneously achieve 85% compensation of the pulsating power and 20% compensation of the voltage drop. The circuit also shows good transient responses. In the third part of this work, monitoring and fault diagnosis of PV modules are addressed to increase system reliability, efficiency, and safety. The proposed fault diagnosis method is based on online PV impedance spectroscopy without additional equipment. It does not require interrupting the power production and uses the pulsating power decoupling circuit as an impedance spectroscopy tool. The simulation results, using MATLAB-Simulink®, show a reduction of more than 80% ripples amplitude of the PV modules terminal voltage. The results also show that impedance spectroscopy can estimate the PV module impedance parameters with a lower than 5% relative error. The evolution of these parameters during operation should make it possible to monitor the health of the panel

Full textThe Low Voltage IGCT (3. 3 kV) is developed to provide a semiconductor able to work at high switching frequencies (>1kHz), preserving its "high current" capacity (4kA). The ultimate goal is to increase the dynamic performances of medium/high power converters, thus extending their application field. To characterise the experimental samples of 3. 3kV IGCTs, an opposition method based test bench was developed. This method allows the components to be evaluated at different test conditions in real operation without the need of several megawatt power supplies. Once the samples were characterised, the applicability analysis of these components on specific applications related to the French railway network (SNCF) is performed. Finally, a reactive power compensation application for single-phase systems is studied in detail and a 100kVAR IGCT based set up is built

Full textThe arc splitting process and the quantification of additional voltage drops are the major phenomena to understand and to optimize the Low Voltage Circuit Breaker (LVCB). The aim of our work is to understand their behavior through experiments and then their representation by our model. Therefore, a three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic modeling is carried out on a simplified LVCB geometry. The developments are based on the commercial code Ansys @Fluent with UDF (User Define Functions). The plasma is described by fluid equations and a finite volume method. To study and isolate the mechanisms, the experimental and numerical work were realized on a simplified geometry, composed by two parallel electrodes with or without splitter plates. Numerically, the additional voltage resulting from the sheaths at the plasma/material interfaces, is considered by an approximate method based on the theoretical characteristic of voltage variation, as the function of current density. This additional resistivity allows to present the current flow in the materials and create some delay at the switching during the splitting process. Further to the experiments, the arc behavior is characterized by electrical measurements (Voltage, current) and by high-speed camera. The arc ignition is realized by a copper fuse of 0.1 mm. The geometry can be more or less closed at its both extremities in order to highlight the effects of pressure force and/or Lorentz force. The description of arc behavior was found similar between the simulation and experiments results. However, the initial conditions of our model proved to be preponderate while at the same time, the conditions remained delicate to determine

Full textThis work deals on the study and the development of a model describing the interaction between argon thermal plasma and a tungsten cathode. A bibliographical study of the different models describing the interaction region is performed leading to the theory proposed by Benilov as base of our developments. In a second part, the arc/cathode interaction model has been realized taking into account secondary emission phenomenon. Then the model has been compared and validated by experimental results found in the literature. The final aim of this study was to couple the developed interaction model to a more global modeling describing the electrical conduction in the cathode bulk, the interaction region (sheath and pre-sheath) and the plasma column. We expose the rule of different possibilities for the input parameters and we justify the choice of the current density as main entry. In a last part, the interaction model has been coupled to a two dimensional coordinate system model of thermal plasma flow. The current continuity between cathode and plasma has been assumed using an estimation of the two temperature electrical conductivity in the pre-sheath. The influence of physical parameters (values of the secondary emission coefficient, work function. . . ) and geometrical ones on the characteristics of the discharge (cathode drop voltage, plasma temperature field. . . ) in a free burning arc configuration using cylindrical cathode has been realized showing the good ability and behavior of the model to a global thermal plasma description
