Abstract:
After the individual case studies presented in the previous chapters, the book now investigates whether the results of the individual case analyses can be generalized, which depends on whether they can also be confirmed against the background of a larger sample. A multilevel analysis involving a total of fifty-four countries was therefore carried out. Church attendance and belief in God, as well as indexes of individual and church religiosity, were used as dependent variables. The guiding set of questions developed in Chapter 3 was operationalized in the selection of the independent variables: the compatibility of religion with functional differentiation, the relationship between religion and differentiation between levels, and the relationship between religious vitality and religious plurality. One interesting result of the multilevel analysis was that belief in God that is part of church interaction is contextually more independent than belief in God that is not tied to the church.

Beghin, Tom. Recognizing Musical Topics Versus Executing Rhetorical Figures. Edited by Danuta Mirka. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199841578.013.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
Along with the emergence of topic theory, musicological discourse has witnessed a spectacular revival of rhetorical terminology. How can musical topics be defined vis-à-vis rhetorical figures? Any answer is fraught with paradox. Unlike Scheibe’s or Mattheson’sloci topici(which remained conceptually clearly anchored ininventio), Ratnerian topics span the range ofresandverba(ideas and words) orinventioandelocutio: like figures, topics are to be recognized as striking foreground events and definitions of them have been style-specific. This chapter discusses three existing examples of figure- versus topic-oriented analysis of solo keyboard sonatas, exploring the compatibility of topic and figure while enlarging the picture to include performance, voluntas(or intent of the speaker), and choice of instrument. The three analyses are Friedrich August Kanne’s (1821) of Mozart’s K. 309/i, Wye Allanbrook’s (1992) of Mozart’s K. 332/i, and Leonard Ratner’s (1980) of Haydn’s Hob. XVI:52/i.

Abstract:
Modern digital echo laboratories are based on echo scanners working in a network with file server(s) and work-station computers for offline analysis and reporting. They may be based on vendor-specific software, but are preferably based on vendor-independent software solutions, being able to handle data from all brands of scanners. To enable analysis of advanced echocardiographic techniques, plug-ins for vendor-specific solutions should be integrated in the otherwise vendor-independent software. To obtain full efficiency, the system should be integrated with the hospital information system for patient demographics and scheduling, and the approved report should automatically be returned to the electronic patient record without the need for scanning or other handling by manpower. To obtain this, a variety of standards have been developed, most of them for medical imaging in general. Scanners of all major brands deliver data compatible with those standards, even if compatibility problems may occur. When the optimal solution for the individual organization has been established, running the echo lab changes significantly. Digital images are stored on safe repositories without quality loss and are available for viewing outside the echo lab. Offline measurements, structured reporting, education, research, quality control, and financial analyses are available. The lab becomes more efficient and cost-effective.
