Abstract:
This research provides the evaluation of the technical measurements of pavement marking materials from a two-year data collection on 2002 National Transportation Product Evaluation Program (NTPEP)?s Mississippi Test Deck from June, 2002 to June 2004. The materials studied in this research were divided into permanent and temporary material groups on two different pavement surfaces ---- asphalt and concrete. The retro reflectivity and durability of permanent marking materials among different surfaces, colors and groups were studied. Also the characteristics for temporary tapes, which include internal tape strength, adhesion, tackiness and dicernablity were compared and regressed. This correlation analysis is to see whether these ratings are correlated to each other. The results of this study can be used for estimating service lives of pavement marking materials. They also can be used by states to select appropriate pavement marking materials for different needs.

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze how the risk-adjusted returns of green funds are compared to the risk-adjusted returns of conventional funds between the years 2005 and 2020 for the European Union countries. Additionally, we have tested how the performance of green funds correlates to the business cycle, subdividing their performance through expansionary and recessionary times. The findings of this paper are summarized as follows: Our regression results demonstrate green and conventional funds exhibiting negative abnormal adjusted-returns against the developed world market benchmark for the single-factor and multifactor models. For the European market benchmark, we find environmental mutual funds presenting a positive performance for both models and conventional funds displaying negative results for the single-factor model and positive results for the multifactor model. The factor loadings findings for green funds indicate a negative load on Momentum, HML and SMB, revealing a higher exposure to big and value companies. Subsampling per business cycle exhibits green mutual funds providing higher risk-adjusted returns to investors during crisis periods and mixed results for the non-crisis periods.

Abstract:
Economic liberalism has always been a very controversial issue in the content of development economics. The relation of neo-liberalism with economic development, as today&rsquo
s dominant discourse of economics, has been highly debated in the last decades. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate this relationship via comparing four countries&rsquo
development experiences
Argentina, China, Turkey and Poland, in between 1965-2005. In addition to that purpose, this thesis aims to analyze whether the experiences of the countries are unique or they display strong similarities with each other
and moreover to assess whether countries that follow the dominant development discourse are more successful than those that diverge from it. Development is defined on the basis of twenty-one indicators which consist of both purely quantitative ones and also others that possess qualitative elements. The comparison was concluded with the results that there was not a universal development path followed by the four countries
neo-liberal transition and reforms in the four countries have in fact brought about changes in some indicators and finally China has been performing better than the other countries by means of a number of indicators, as a country which has relatively been outside the dominant development trend in the world

Abstract:
The use of internet has increased over the past years. Many users may not have good intentions. Some people use the internet to gain access to the unauthorized information. Although absolute security of information is not possible for any network connected to the Internet however, firewalls make an important contribution to the network security. A firewall is a barrier placed between the network and the outside world to prevent the unwanted and potentially damaging intrusion of the network. This thesis compares the performance of Linux packet filtering firewalls, i.e. iptables and shorewall. The firewall performance testing helps in selecting the right firewall as needed. In addition, it highlights the strength and weakness of each firewall. Both firewalls were tested by using the identical parameters. During the experiments, recommended benchmarking methodology for firewall performance testing is taken into account as described in RFC 3511. The comparison process includes experiments which are performed by using different tools. To validate the effectiveness of firewalls, several performance metrics such as throughput, latency, connection establishment and teardown rate, HTTP transfer rate and system resource consumption are used. The experimental results indicate that the performance of Iptables firewall decreases as compared to shorewall in all the aspects taken into account. All the selected metrics show that large numbers of filtering rules have a negative impact on the performance of both firewalls. However, UDP throughput is not affected by the number of filtering rules. The experimental results also indicate that traffic sent with different packet sizes do not affect the performance of firewalls.

The scope of this dissertation is the comparison between the meanvariance based performance measurers of active management Brazilian-based stock funds and stochastic dominance of first, second and third orders criteria. 84 funds were considered and the period studied goes from May 1999 to April 2001. For the stochastic dominance calculus a Matlab function was created so that, with the funds returns as inputs, it gives the most dominating funds in relation to the others. The conclusion of this study is that individuals that chose investments taking account solely mean-variance measurers can make decisions that goes against their criteria of risk aversion and absolute decreasing risk aversion. In the same way, investments funds performance measured only by stochastic dominance criteria will not lead necessarily to a highest reward-to- risk ratio. Regarding a well structured investment decision, investors should consider all moments of the distribution of returns and perform not only a mean- variance but also a stochastic dominance analysis.

Rutsate, Jerry. "Performance of Mhande song-dance: a contextualized and comparative analysis." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002321.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the significance of Mhande song-dance in two performance contexts: the Mutoro ritual of the Karanga and the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Competition. In addition, I undertake comparative analysis of the structure of Mhande music in relation to the structure of selected genres of Shona indigenous music. The position of Mhande in the larger context of Shona music is determined through analysis of transcriptions of the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic elements of chizambi mouth bow, karimba mbira, ngororombe panpipes, ngano story songs, game, hunting, war, and love songs. Mhande is an indigenous song-dance performed for the mutoro ceremony, the annual rain ritual of the Karanga. The Mhande repertoire consists of distinctive songs and rhythms used for communicating with the majukwa rain spirits. The rain spirits in turn communicate with God (Mwari) the provider of rain, on behalf of the Karanga. Mhande song-dance is performed exactly the same way in the annual Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Competitions as in the ritual context of the mutoro ceremony. However, in the context of the Competition, it is used for the expression of joy and as a form of cultural identity. The Competition is a forum in which Karanga songdance traditions such as Mhande, compete with other Shona song-dance traditions such as mbakumba, shangara and chinyambera. I contextualize and analyse Mhande song-dance by using the ‘Matonjeni Model’, which in terms of Karanga epistemology, is culture specific. This Model is grounded in description, interpretation and analysis; the primary methods in my research process.

Pinto, Ribeiro Bruno Alfredo. "Exploring authenticity in performance : a comparative performance analysis of Arnold van Wyk’s Night Music for piano." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1924.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MMus (Music))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
Arnold van Wyk was a composer and a pianist. He recorded his largest work for piano, Night Music (1958), on LP in 1963. Steven de Groote performed Night Music on 21 July 1984 at the Cheltenham International Festival of Music. This live performance was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 24 September 1984 and a copy of this broadcast exists in the Arnold van Wyk collection in the J.S. Gericke Library at Stellenbosch University. Night Music is a perfect example of Van Wyk’s compositional techniques for the keyboard. It demands a considerable musical imagination and piano technique from the performer. The score of Night Music contains many detailed instructions regarding the different musical parameters and it also encloses unusual terms such as glacial or lugubre. It shows that the composer is extremely concerned to control all aspects of the performance and expects great depth of interpretation of the performer. Analysing the score of Night Music together with a performance by the composer enables one to consider two versions of “authenticated text”. The comparison between Arnold van Wyk’s recording, score and Steven de Groote’s performance allows the researcher to draw conclusions about score fidelity as a condition for “authenticity” in performance. Therefore, the primary aim of this research project is to yield interesting perspectives on notions of authenticity in performance with regard to these two particular performances of Night Music. The main body of this thesis consists of four chapters. In Chapter One a philosophical discussion about authenticity in performance is presented. Chapter Two focuses on the contextualisation of the work under discussion, including the reception and a short analysis of Night Music. It is followed by Chapter Three which compares the pianism of Arnold van Wyk and Steven de Groote. These latter two chapters form the background of the comparative performance analysis of the renditions of Night Music by these two performers which are presented in Chapter Four. Through the careful comparative analysis of Arnold van Wyk’s and Steven de Groote’s performances of Night Music it was possible to observe that a composer can present a version of his work that departs quite radically from the score. As “authenticity in performance” strives to honour the composer’s intentions as notated in the score, this discrepancy illustrates the controversial nature of the discourse on the “authentic” in music.

Ferdous, Arundhoti. "Comparative Analysis of Tag Estimation Algorithms on RFID EPC Gen-2 Performance." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6837.

Full text
Abstract:
In a passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) system the reader communicates with the tags using the EPC Global UHF Class 1 Generation 2 (EPC Gen-2) protocol with dynamic framed slotted ALOHA. Due to the unique challenges presented by a low-power, random link, the channel efficiency of even the most modern passive RFID system is less than 40%. Hence, a variety of methods have been proposed to estimate the number of tags in the environment and set the optimal frame size. Some of the algorithms in the literature even claim system efficiency beyond 90%. However, these algorithms require fundamental changes to the underlying protocol framework which makes them ineligible to be used with the current hardware running on the EPC Gen-2 platform and this infrastructure change of the existing industry will cost billions of dollars. Though numerous types of tag estimation algorithms have been proposed in the literature, none had their performance analyzed thoroughly when incorporated with the industry standard EPC Gen-2. In this study, we focus on some of the algorithms which can be utilized on today’s current hardware with minimal modifications. EPC Gen-2 already provides a dynamic platform in adjusting frame sizes based on subsequent knowledge of collision slots in a given frame. We choose some of the popular probabilistic tag estimation algorithms in the literature such as Dynamic Frame Slotted ALOHA (DFSA) – I, and DFSA – II, and rule based algorithms such as two conditional tag estimation (2CTE) method and incorporate them with EPC Gen-2 using different strategies to see if they can significantly improve channel efficiency and dynamicity. The results from each algorithm are also evaluated and compared with the performance of pure EPC Gen-2. It is important to note that while integrating these algorithms with EPC Gen-2 to modify the frame size, the protocol is not altered in any substantial way. We also kept the maximum system efficiency for any MAC layer protocol using DFSA as the upper bound to have an impartial comparison between the algorithms. Finally, we present a novel and comprehensive analysis of the probabilistic tag estimation algorithms (DFSA-I & DFSA-II) in terms of their statistically significant correlations between channel efficiency, algorithm estimation accuracy and algorithm utilization rate as the existing literature only look at channel efficiency with no auxiliary analysis. In this study, we use a scalable and flexible simulation framework and created a light-weight, verifiable Gen-2 simulation tool to measure these performance parameters as it is very difficult, if not impossible, to calculate system performance analytically. This framework can easily be used to test and compare more algorithms in the literature with Gen-2 and other DFSA based approaches.

Abstract:
Traditional Ad Hoc network wireless communication in the past years have contributed tremendously to the dawn of wireless mesh networks (WMNs) which have so far been able to provide a significant improvement in capacity and scalability. Routing metrics which form the basic element for the routing protocol in this innovative communication technology is a call for concern as they must take into consideration the wireless medium network characteristics in order to provide a optimum appreciable QoS performance. In the past many single-radio routing metrics have been proposed for Ad Hoc networks which are not compatible with the multi-radio routing scenario demanded by WMNs. In our work, we provide a comparative analysis of most recently proposed multi-radio routing metrics for WMNs. We begin by providing an overview of the features of a wireless mesh network thereby presenting a better understanding of some of the research challenges of WMNs. Also, since single-radio routing forms the basis of multi-radio routing, we in this regard provide a review of some single-radio routing metrics. In our comparative analysis, an overview of routing protocols for WMNs is provided enabling an understanding of the demands to be included in a routing metric to ensure efficient routing in WMNs since different routing protocols may impose different demands; we then identify the requirements of multi-radio routing metrics from which we base our comparative analysis.

Abstract:
The Load Haul Dump (LHD) machine and its operating environment create a complex system. Mine productivity depends on the operation of the LHDs and on the mining environment, including fragmentation, size of boulders, navigation techniques etc. Traditional navigation techniques require a lot of infrastructure to accommodate automatic operation. From fully automated fleets of vehicles, the focus of automation has gradually widened to include more flexible solutions, such as semi-automatic LHD machines, with safety as a main goal. The automatic system used for semi-automation is different from that used for fleet automation in that less infrastructure is needed, and the operator controls only one vehicle at a time. A semi-automatic LHD machine can operate in either manual or automatic mode depending on the need and situation. Several issues must be resolved to maximise the benefits of automation. One is to improve the maintenance strategy, especially preventive maintenance, as it is crucial to avoid the loss of time incurred by unplanned breakdowns. Another issue is the complexity of the mining environment; external disturbances such as oversized boulders, road maintenance etc. can throw the entire investment in automation into question. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the maintenance actions connected to automated LHDs as well as the factors influencing the operation of the machine. Research methods include a literature review, unstructured interviews, and data collection and integration. Reliability analysis, fault tree analysis and Markov modeling were performed to comparatively analyse manual and automatic LHDs.This thesis presents an approach to evaluate the performance of manual and semi-automatic LHD machines. It describes the maintenance procedures of automatic LHD machines. It includes a study of the reliability of LHD machines with special attention to automatic operation. It studies the operating environment’s effect on automatically operated LHDs compared to manually operated LHD machines, identifies the external disturbances affecting the automatic operation of LHD machines, and introduces a new way of modeling the maintenance and environmental disturbances to determine the best operation mode for the LHD machine. The analysis shows that the production performance of manual and semi-automatic LHD machines is similar. When it comes to the maintenance performance, hydraulic and electric systems are still the biggest reason for machine downtime but the stops are usually short, which means that LHD machines can start producing relatively soon after failure. However, the automatic LHD machine has more time spent in the workshop for the transmission and engine than the manual LHD machine. The difference in reliability between the machines regarding the engine is not significant. But for the transmission there is a verified difference. One possible reason for the difference in transmission reliability could be engaging/disengaging gears when the machine is in automatic mode. The analysis of the operating environment shows that LHDs suffer from mining related, machine related and/or automatic system related disturbances. Seventy-five percent of the stops causing idle time for LHD machines are related to the operating environment. Better fragmentation of rock to avoid big boulders, better constructed roads to minimise the need for road maintenance etc. are keys to the successful operation of automated LHDs.Fault tree models and reliability block diagrams are effective tools for evaluating the reliability of a system but it can be difficult to include mining related disturbances. Therefore, in this thesis, Markov models are introduced to describe disturbances affecting LHD machines and to identify possible differences between manual and semi-automatic LHDs. A fault tree model can classify and analyse failures but cannot show changes between states; this is something a Markov model can handle. The proposed Markov model built for the application shows that the best mode, from an operational point of view, is semi-automatic operation due to its flexibility handling disturbances of different kinds, especially those that are mining related.

Arcella, Joseph Louis. "Comparative Analysis of Current Performance-Based Maintenance Methods to Improve Virginia Highways." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/19321.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was completed in two phases; phase-one involved a mini-scan study of the highway maintenance industry to identify the current state-of-practice in performance-based maintenance contracting (PBMC). Phase one gathered information on domestic and foreign agencies currently using performance-based maintenance on highways. Phase two used the mini-scan study information to build, compare and analyze agency timelines (i.e., VDOT to others). Timelines included major milestones at each agency; milestones which enabled innovation in the field of performance-based contracting. The purpose of comparing VDOT to other agencies was to provide VDOT with industry best practices as well as recommendations for future contract evolutions. Timelines were constructed for Florida DOT, Main Roads of Western Australia, England\'s Highways Agency and New Zealand Transport Agency. Connection links were made between VDOT and the other four agencies based on similarities in procurement laws and maintenance milestones (i.e., 1st Design-Build project). The timeline linkages and collection of information on benefits associated with PBMC (compared to traditional method-based maintenance) were used to make five recommendations for VDOT\'s future maintenance program. VDOT recommendations were: Use performance-based contracting on secondary roads, use area-wide contracts to cover addition facilities, shift VDOT TAMS focus from lowest-cost to a best-value approach similar to England\'s Managing-Agent Contractor, devise a strategic network of highways to prioritize maintenance, use key performance indicators to align Maintenance Division objectives with overall VDOT organization. Recommendations also considered the current restrictions imposed by Virginia procurement laws.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the impact of mobility on fifth grade students in an urban elementary school environment during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 school years. The significance of the study lay in its intent to assess the impact of mobility. Specifically, the study analyzed the demographic characteristics of mobile students and investigated the impact of mobility on student achievement, attendance, discipline referrals, and retention.;The sample consisted of 244 fifth graders. Archival data were obtained from the students' scholastic and directory information records for the 1994-95 and 1995-96 school years. The results were analyzed by performing a one tail t-test. The study concluded that the reading achievement and the mathematics achievement of mobile students were significantly less than that of nonmobile students.;In addition, the number of absences, discipline referrals, and retentions for mobile students were significantly higher than that of nonmobile students. This study supported the idea that schools must advocate more and better interventions to equitably meet the needs of mobile students. Recommendations were made for future research.

When storing and handling Big Data sets a database management system (DBMS) can be implemented to administrate and query databases. The Swedish Internet is a big unstructured data set that contains all published Swedish Websites since the late 1990’s. NoSQL DBMSs such as MongoDB and CouchDB are particularly suited to store the Swedish Internet. Comparing the search performance of MongoDB and CouchDB in this scenario required the insertion of a subset of the Swedish Internet, querying of the data and measuring the search performance. The results show that CouchDB has in general a superior performance but comes with a drawback which is its indexation time. If a query will only be executed a few amount of times MongoDB is generally the better choice. Further studies needs to be conducted in order to assess the performance of NoSQL DBMSs over the whole dataset.

Abstract:
This thesis researched the accuracy of measured energy data in comparison to estimated hand calculation data and estimated building energy performance simulation data. In the facility management industry, there is minimal evidence that building energy performance software is being used as a benchmark against measured energy usage within a building. Research was conducted to find examples of measured energy data compared to simulated data. The study examined the accuracy of a simulation software and hand calculations to measured energy data. Data suggests that comparisons may be made between building energy performance simulated data and measured data, though comparisons are solely based on each individual case. Data suggests that heating load simulation data is more accurate for benchmarks than cooling load simulation data. Importing models into Autodesk Green Building Studio (GBS) was not as successful as was expected. When only four of the initial ten building models chosen imported successfully, the remaining twenty-five other building models were imported. Only two of the twenty-five models successfully imported into GBS. The sample size of this research changed from ten to six. The results of this study show that GBS simulated data was close to actual data for the heating loads. For the cooling loads, however, GBS simulated data was consistently low in comparison to the actual data. The results of this study show that hand calculations were consistently low and not as close as GBS simulated data when compared to the actual data for the heating loads. The opposite was true with the cooling loads as hand calculations were consistently high in comparison to actual data.

Abstract:
Many hedge funds are believed to yield considerable returns to investors; there is an assumption that suggests hedge funds seem uncorrelated with market fluctuations and have relatively low volatility. In recent years, emerging market hedge funds have experienced a higher capital inflow in periods when the diversification benefits of investing in emerging markets are higher. However, the strategy‟s share of the hedge fund industry‟s total capital flows has decreased significantly during the same periods: this might imply that investors have reallocated capital to other hedge fund strategies. This paper investigates whether emerging markets hedge funds have been as consistent in performance as the benchmark indices by presenting results of comparative analysis of two sample emerging markets hedge fund indices and two standard emerging markets benchmarks performance. The empirical study ranges from the period of January 2006 to December 2010.

Abstract:
Eleven years ago Cisco introduced three types of applications on the same converged network and named it AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data). In spite of the initial interest and hype surrounding AVVID, the feature was and still is unable to confront problems such as: data priority, load balancing and network congestion. The work in this report addressed these issues within the network. Different Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) methods: routing protocols, Cisco IOS QoS (including LLQ, LFI and Header Compression), Path Control and Cisco Performance Routing (PfR) were all tested to see which feature would work best at enhancing network performance. A practical network was created in which these features were carefully implemented one after another. In every step, the results were observed and recorded and if necessary repeated in order to check their validity. The results for RTT (Round Trip Time) and MOS (Mean Opinion Score) showed that in comparison to Path Control and Cisco IOS QoS (Quality of Service) mechanisms, Cisco PfR was able to generate routes on the fly during times of network congestion. This cannot be achieved with the use of Cisco QoS and Path Control which makes Cisco Performance Routing a far more superior feature. Although the focus of the work was VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) data, it is possible to construct a network with any application as Cisco PfR is able to reroute data. Cisco PfR is an easily accessible IOS feature which, once implemented, requires very little updating and maintenance.

Abstract:
In crucial times, such as natural disasters like Earthquakes, Floods, military attack, rescue and emergency operations, etc., it is not possible to maintain an infrastructure. In these situations, wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc networks can be an alternative to wired networks. In our thesis, due to the importance of MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc Network) applications, we do research on MANET and its subtype IMANET (Internet based Mobile Ad-hoc Network). In MANETs, finding an optimum path among nodes is not a simple issue due to the random mobility of nodes and topology changes frequently. Simple routing algorithms like Shortest Path, Dijksta‟s and Link State fail to find route in such dynamic scenarios. A number of ad-hoc protocols (Proactive, Reactive, Hybrid and Position based) have been developed for MANETs. In this thesis, we have designed an IMANET in OPNET 14.5 and tested the performance of three different routing protocols namely OLSR (Optimum Link State Routing), TORA (Temporarily Ordered Routing Algorithm) and AODV (Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector) in different scenarios by varying the number of nodes and the size of the area. The experimental results demonstrate that among the three protocols, none of the routing protocol can ensure good quality HTTP and voice communication in all our considered scenarios.

Lahel, Amarjit. "Political leadership : character and performance : a comparative analysis of British political leadership, 1997-2010." Thesis, Aston University, 2012. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/17475/.

Full text
Abstract:
Classical and contemporary scholarship on leadership has referred to political performance and the ability of political actors to deploy the self to political purpose. Literature on contemporary British politics (Hennessy, 2001; Marquand, 2008, King, 2009) has highlighted the qualitative shift in political leadership from the mid-1990s towards a focus upon the image, style, celebrity and performance of political leaders, and the shift towards the presidentialisation or semi-presidentialisation of the prime minister (Foley, 2001). However, the literature has lacked a focus upon political performance and a methodology for assessing leadership performance within cultural and institutional contexts. This thesis assesses British political leadership performance from 1997-2010 through the proposal of a framework of political performance to suit comparative purpose. The framework consisting of culture, institutions and performance is used to assess the performance of the case studies (Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron, and Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg in the televised Leaders’ Debates of 2010). The application of the framework to the case studies will allow us to a) analyse political performance within given cultural and institutional contexts; b) establish the character traits and other aspects of a politician’s political persona; and c) appraise the role and effects of performance and persona upon the political process.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This thesis deals with the fascinating subject of the design of digital communication systems - or more precisely one topic therein, i.e., modulation. Modulation and its counterpart demodulation are the means of making the information ride the beast of a wireless radio channel. The introduction of mMFSK and amMFSK generated ideas of applying the approach to other modulation methods. The straightforward extension was to apply the method to CSK modulation to introduce mMCSK modulation. The analysis shows that due to the orthogonality of the signaling waveforms of mMCSK (with Walsh codes) and mMFSK, the same performance is achieved for modulation methods with the same modulation alphabet. But with CSK it is rather easy to construct non-orthogonal signaling waveforms. Hence, the thesis also gives analytical results for non-orthogonal mMCSK and especially considers (as an example) the use of Gold and Kasami codes. The results indicate that the best choice of codes for a non-coherent mMCSK system is the orthogonal code family, which is a rather intuitive result. However, for a coherent mMCSK system, better performance could be achieved with non-orthogonal codes. Given that we can construct a code set where the cross-correlation between the codes in the family is negative (ρi,j<0), performance improvement compared to the orthogonal code family is achieved. The results show that, for instance, a 0.5 dB performance improvement in the AWGN channel can be achieved by using a specifically constructed set of Kasami codes as the basis functions in the modulation. The thesis also presents the performance analysis results of mMCSK in a flat Rayleigh fading channel. To further enlarge the modulation alphabet sizes (with the price of larger spectrum usage) it was realized that combining the mMFSK and mMCSK would be an interesting choice. The mMCSK-mMFSK modulation was hence introduced, which can be viewed as the main contribution of this thesis. A method to analyze this two-component modulation was developed and the performance analyses give results for mMCSK-mMFSK modulation in AWGN and flat Rayleigh fading channels for both coherent and non-coherent receivers. The performance was also assessed with orthogonal and non-orthogonal code constructs. Moreover, an antipodal extension of the mMCSK-mMFSK modulation was introduced with the analysis of the performance. A third contribution of the thesis was to introduce the mPPM modulation method following the mMFSK principles. The performance results obtained in the mMCSK can also be applied to these modulation formats in certain scenarios. PPM modulation has been widely suggested to be used in UWB systems. In UWB systems, the means to adapt the data rate is the use of pulse repetition. Hence, the performance analysis of the mPPM modulation methods with pulse repetition and a non-coherent receiver was computed. The performance of pulse repetition in impulsive interference was also computed
Koherentille mMCSK:lle voidaan kuitenkin rakentaa epäortogonaalisia koodikonstruktioita, joissa koodien välinen ristikorrelaatio on negatiivinen ja tällöin saavutetaan suorituskyvyn parantumista ortogonaaliseen koodiperheeseen verattuna.

More and more attention is given to the capacity that an organization has to retain its clients and maintain their loyalty, even when situations go wrong. This is due to the attitudes and behaviors of employees. This work intends to understand which factors or combination of factors contribute to the recovery of a service where a failure occurred. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, sent by email, made to the organization's employees. Data analysis was done using the Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The results revealed that equifinal combinations of conditions that origin behavior of the adaptive type are similar to combinations that lead to proactive behaviors by employees and that commitment to the organization is an almost always necessary condition to ensure a good level of service recovery through adaptive and proactive behavior. It was also concluded that there are five combinations of conditions that lead to proactive behaviors of service recovery and five combinations that lead to adaptive behavior. Four of the last ones are the same that lead to proactive behaviors.

Context: Extensive and rapid continuous growth in Internet Protocol (IP) based networks and as the result of increasing dependencies on these networks makes them extremely challenging to manage and keep them running all the time. 24/7 non-stop monitoring is important to minimize the down time of the network. For this reason dependency on automated network monitoring has been increased. Objectives: There are many tools and systems available for network monitoring. This includes expensive commercial solutions to open source products. Nagios and OpenNMS are two of the most popular systems and they are considered to be close competitors. Comparison discussions about them are very common at different forums on internet. But no empirical study for comparison analysis has been done. In this thesis the comparison study between Nagios and OpenNMS was conducted. Methods: Network monitoring functionalities are listed down from literature followed by industrial interviews with the networking professionals. Then taking these functionalities as a base, to evaluate, survey studies for both systems were conducted separately and comparison analysis of the results was performed. Usability evaluation of both systems was done by conducting usability testing and comparison analysis of the results was performed. Results: Besides providing the comparison of both systems this study also can help to findout the strengths and weaknesses of both systems separately. And in the end we suggested a list of functionalities and features which might help in selection of a monitoring system and also might be helpful for improvement of the monitoring systems.

This essay intends to cover the empirical aspects of the performance of the Federal Audit Court (Tribunal de Contas da União - TCU) since the beginning of the Constitution of 1988 to 2010. To this end, the work begins with a theoretical approach on the state accountability, represented by the accountability phenomenon, analyzed by several political scientists, especially in the context of Latin America. In a second moment, we pass to the study of the figure of the Audit Courts, summarizing the characteristics of some base models of external control agencies in other countries, writing, after that, about brief historical aspects of TCU - with emphasis on the debates of the 87-88 Constituent - and culminating in the regulatory and institutional aspects of the Federal Audit Court in Brazil. Finally, the work reveals the real features of the action of TCU, demonstrated by the legal successive internal comparison, carried out under two main guiding aspects related to the Court (the annual review of accounts rendered by the President and the exercise of some ordinary activities of TCU, such as inspections, receiving complaints, executive lawsuits, among others), covering the period from 1989 to 2010.

Glew, Fiona. "High-performance liquid chromatographic studies of the acid degradation, pharmacokinetics and comparative bioavailability of erythromycin." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001529.

Full text
Abstract:
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with a spectrum similar to penicillin and is used mainly in the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive organisms. Since its discovery in 1952, erythromycin has achieved wide-spread clinical use. Susceptibility of erythromycin base to inactivation by acid results in decreased availability following exposure to acidic gastric fluids. Formulation of acid resistant dosage forms and the preparation of acid stable chemical derivatives have been attempted to improve absorption and subsequent clinical efficacy . Two of the most commonly used erythromycin derivatives are the stearic acid salt (erythromycin stearate) and the lauryl sulphate salt of the propionyl ester (erythromycin estolate). Although it has been known for many years that erythromycin is susceptible to acid degradation, very few reports on the stability of erythromycin in aqueous solutions appear in the literature. In this study, a high-performance liquid chromatographic system using electrochemical detection was employed for a kinetic study of erythromycin degradation. The effect of varying acid pH on the degradation rate of both erythromycin base and erythromycin stearate, and the effect on the hydrolysis rate of erythromycin estolate is presented. In addition, the effect of temperature on erythromycin degradation was also investigated. Until recently, the majority of pharmacokinetic and bioavailability studies have utilized relatively non-specific microbiological assay procedures. However, in this study a solid phase extraction, followed by the use of a high-performance liquid chromatographic system using electrochemical coulometric detection was employed for the determination of erythromycin in biological fluids. Human volunteers each received enteric coated erythromycin base pellets in capsule dosage form and also film coated erythromycin stearate tablets on separate occasions. Results from the clinical trials revealed the enteric coated erythromycin base pellets had a greater bioavailability than the film coated erythromycin stearate tablets. Computer fitting of data revealed no intra-volunteer variability in elimination rate constants, suggesting differences in serum levels following administration of both dosage forms are due to variation in absorption. Results from the clinical trials were also compared with those obtained from a further trial, during which the same volunteers received erythromycin estolate

Abstract:
This thesis examines the cost-effectiveness of the Greek Supplementary Schools with respect to the two aims they pursue: 1. The good performance of their students in the A-level Modern Greek examination and 2. The maintenance of a 'Greek cultural identity' by their students. In the study I used a random sample of nine schools with 203 students from successive year cohorts. The data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and group conversations. The ML3 package and the value added method were employed to analyse the factors affecting the A-level results. Discourse analysis with some elements of conversation analysis was used to examine the cultural aim of the schools. The study found that there are differences in the cost-effectiveness of the different Greek Supplementary schools. These differences are mainly due to the student intake (GCSE grade) and to the school type, that is whether it is a church school, a parent's association school or an independent school. The cost of the school appears to have a negative effect on performance, but the effect disappears when the type of school dummy is included. The study also showed that girls do slightly better in the exams than boys and that educated mothers positively influence the performance of students. Also, certain characteristics of the teachers and head teachers as well as factors related to the school organisation and ethos were found to have an effect on the A-level grades. The cultural analysis showed that the school did not appear to be responsible for creating the Greek Identity of students, but developed and reinforced what the family had already given. When the two main types of analysis were brought together, it was found that these two aims are jointly pursued in these schools. The findings of this research will be of use to decision makers in the field of educational provision in the Greek Supplementary Schools. The results show that cost-effectiveness analysis is a useful tool that should be used in school effectiveness studies. The study also shows that in analysing the cost-effectiveness of schools the multi level approach has significant advantages over simple input-output methods.

Abstract:
In today’s globalized business world enterprises face increasing competition and accompanying internal and external threats that challenge their enterprise strategies. Multiple examples of enterprises show that long-lasting strategies need to be progressively overworked in order to secure competitiveness. One key for long-term competitiveness seems to lie in the ability to find a reasonable ratio of strategic stability and change. Neglecting the tension of strategic stability and change can have fatal consequences. Strategic management research increasingly focuses on this challenge. Lately research on ambidexterity and dynamic capability attempts to explain the underlying issues of proactively balancing strategic tensions in dynamic markets. Yet, there remain a couple of questions that – unanswered – limit the explanatory power of recent research models. Because of conceptual ambiguities around the concepts of ambidexterity and dynamic capabilities, until now it remains unclear how a balance between strategic stability and change is reached and managed, and how the underlying strategic decision and strategic management processes at the organizational level look like. To address these open issues, this work develops an alternative framework of strategic ambidexterity. It is defined as a deliberate mechanism to detect, monitor, steer, coordinate and balance stability and change of the enterprise strategy. It argues that enterprises do not deal with strategic stability and change accidently. Quite on the contrary, the enterprises’ key actors are aware of this challenge and have a mechanism in place that allows them to deliberately and continuously employ the right ratio of strategic stability and change. This deliberate mechanism is assumed to create performance differences. High-performing enterprises have a particular setting of the mechanism that distinguishes them from low-performing peers and that secures their long-term competitiveness. In order to empirically test the mechanism a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) using a sample of 74 mechanical engineering enterprises is performed. As will be shown there are in fact differences between high and low-performing enterprises. The strategic behavior of high-performing enterprises can be classified as Guided Long-Term Inclusive Planning (GLTIP). This work adds new knowledge to the research on ambidexterity and dynamic capabilities and also contributes to the methodological discussion on the analysis of sustainable competitive advantage in today’s globalized and dynamic markets.

Introduction: Sustained attention is known to be dysfunctional in psychotic disorders. Sustained attention is the ability to remain focused on a specific time-locked stimulus within a task. We aimed to determine whether there are specific group differences between CON and three psychotic disorders: SCZ, MPD and BPD, then to determine differences between these psychotic disorders. This included differences in behavioural performance and prominent electrophysiological event-related potential (ERP) wave components during cueing and target processing of a visual sustained attention task. Further we aimed to characterize ERP waveform component relationships across and within these groups for demographics, substance use, behavioural performance, and clinical variables, the last limited to the psychotic groups. Lastly, we investigated the effects of prescribed medications on ERP wave components within the psychotic groups. Methodology: 103 participants (29 schizophrenia (SCZ), 28 bipolar disorder with a history of psychosis (BPD), 21 methamphetamine-induced psychotic disorder (MPD), and 30 controls (CON)) underwent electroencephalography (EEG) record while completing a visual continuous performance task. Participants were presented with 60 trials with three consecutive S’s, the presentation of the third S required a behavioural response. Prominent ERP waveform components were extracted from cues and target stimulus. Group differences were determined by ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc correction or multivariate Kruskal-Wallis test dependent on data distribution. Relationships between ERP wave components were determined appropriate with Spearman’s Rank order correlation analyses.

Abstract:
Context: The Vehicle Routing Problem is an NP-hard problem with a combination of varieties oftopics like logistics, optimization research and data mining. There is a vast need of vehicle routingsolutions in day to day like with different constraints. According to the requirements, this problem hasbeen a field of interest to a lot of researchers who incorporate scientific methods to combine andinnovate new solutions to optimize the routing. Being an np-hard problem, it is almost impossible tocompute the solutions to optimality but years of research on this area has paid off quite significantlyand the solutions are optimized little by little and better than before. Some applications may or maynot find slight difference in the performance as a considerable affect but some applications orscenarios heavily depend on the performance of the solution where it is very vital that the solution isoptimized to the fullest. As a data mining technique clustering has been used very prominently in caseof portioning scenarios and similarly it has also began to surface in implementing VRP solutions.Although it has recently emerged into the Vehicle Routing era and shown some significant results, ithas not yet come into an open state or awareness. The awareness regarding clustering matters in ahuge extent to be considered by most of the recent researchers who formulate new algorithms to solveVRP and help them further optimize their solution. Objectives: In this study the significance of clustering has been considered to find out how the usageof clustering techniques can alter the performance of VRP based solutions favorably. Then to test theresults of two recently proposed cluster based algorithms, a comparison has been made to other typesof algorithms which prove how the algorithms stand with various methods. Methods: A literature review is performed using various articles that have been gathered from GoogleScholar and then an empirical experiment was conducted on the results available in the papers. Thisexperiment was done by performing a comparative analysis. Results: For the literature review the results were gathered from all the articles based on theirresearch, experience, use of clustering and how their result was improved by using clustering methodsin their formulations. Considering the experiment, the results of both the algorithm were comparedwith the results of five other papers who aim to solve the VRP using exactly the same instances thatwere used in the two algorithms in order to compare valid results on the same variables. Then theresults were analyzed for the purpose of comparison and conclusions were drawn accordingly. Conclusions: From the research performed in this paper we can conclude the vast significance ofclustering techniques that were drawn based on practical test results of various authors. From theexperiment performed it is clear that the Hybrid algorithm has a much higher performance than anyother algorithm it has been compared to. This algorithm has also been proven to enhance itsperformance due to the implementation of clustering techniques in their formulation. Since the resultswere only based on performance that is, in this case the total distance of the final route, future studyindicates the implementation of algorithms to compare them on basis of time complexity and spacecomplexity as well.

Abstract:
In the field of Natural Language Processing, supervised machine learning is commonly used to solve classification tasks such as sentiment analysis and text categorization. The classical way of representing the text has been to use the well known Bag-Of-Words representation. However lately low-dimensional dense word vectors have come to dominate the input to state-of-the-art models. While few studies have made a fair comparison of the models' sensibility to the text representation, this thesis tries to fill that gap. We especially seek insight in the impact various unsupervised pre-trained vectors have on the performance. In addition, we take a closer look at the Random Indexing representation and try to optimize it jointly with the classification task. The results show that while low-dimensional pre-trained representations often have computational benefits and have also reported state-of-the-art performance, they do not necessarily outperform the classical representations in all cases.

Platonova, Elena. "Comparative analysis of CSR disclosure and its impact on financial performance in the GCC Islamic banks." Thesis, Durham University, 2014. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/10726/.

Abstract:
The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been developed and promoted since the 1960s, as part of the changing nature of the corporate working environment, with the objective of corporations having their share in contributing to social good in the economy and in society. CSR, as a concept and practice, is directly related to Islamic banking operations, since Islamic finance is located within Islamic moral economy, which essentialises social justice. The Islamic banking sector, therefore, is required by the nature of Islamic injunctions and principles to produce outcomes that are in line with the larger social expectations, namely CSR, with the objective of delivering long-term economic benefits but also to help society. The main aim of this research, therefore, is to analyse the CSR attitudes and practices of Islamic banks in the GCC region through their CSR disclosure practices. This research further aims to examine empirically the impact of CSR disclosure practices of the GCC Islamic banks on their financial performance. In fulfilling the research aim, annual reports of GCC Islamic banks for the period 2000- 2011 are scored by using content analysis. The CSR disclosure index is constructed based on the eight dimensions developed for this purpose. Despite the high expectations of full disclosure and accountability, the research findings do not produce encouraging results in terms of CSR or the social outcome of Islamic banks in the GCC region. The majority of GCC Islamic banks disclose significantly less than required, as CSR disclosure indices for all the Islamic banks remain very low in comparison to the overall score but also for each of the CSR dimensions included in the indices. While examining the impact of CSR disclosure practices on financial performance of Islamic banks in the GCC region, the results indicate the positive relationship between CSR disclosure and financial performance. These results are in line with the set hypotheses and discussed theoretical framework that predict a positive link between corporate social and financial performance in the Islamic banking industry.
