Abstract:
In this paper, I provide an analysis of Tohono O'odham vowel devoicing with respect to physiological explanation. There are three points in this paper. First, this paper provides data of devoicing (consonants and vowels) in Tohono O'odham. Second, analysis of devoicing in terms of subglottal pressure drop is provided. Third, the devoicing is accounted for within the framework of OT (McCarthy and Prince 1993, Prince and Smolensky 1993). The organization of the paper is as follows. In section 2, the background of the language including both voiced and voiceless vowels is described. In section 3, the data of Tohono O'odham words with voiceless vowels are provided. Then the distribution of devoiced segments is discussed. In section 4, an analysis of devoicing with respect to subglottal pressure drop is presented with schematic diagrams. Then an OT account utilizing phonetic constraints is presented.

Abstract:
It is well known that there are four classes of Japanese vocabulary with respect to its origin; Yamato vocabulary consists of native morphemes, Sino- Japanese consists of borrowed morphemes from Chinese, Foreign is a loanword from a language other than Chinese, and Mimetic describes sounds or manners. Each of these classes has different phonological properties.1 There are three phenomena with respect to the distribution of voice in Japanese. One of them is that post-nasal obstruents in Yamato vocabulary and Mimetic are mostly voiced while those in Sino-Japanese and Foreign are not. I will mainly focus on this property in this paper. However, I will also discuss the other phenomena, namely the compound voicing alternation (Rendaku) and the restriction of voiced sounds in a morpheme (Lyman's Law). These phenomena typically occur with Yamato vocabulary only. Although the domain of each phenomenon largely overlaps with a certain class of lexical origin, they do not match completely with each other. The purpose of this paper is to account for the distribution of voice in Japanese by establishing a constraint ranking that covers Japanese vocabulary of any origin. The organization of the paper is as follows. In section 2, I will present data and four problems to be solved. General tendency of Yamato vocabulary are summarized in 2.1, and many exceptions to the generalization are presented in 2.2. In section 3, I will give an analysis using a unified ranking rather than different rankings depending on origins of the vocabulary. In section 4, I will present two pieces of evidence --- historical and acquisional---to support my claim that Japanese has only one ranking.

Abstract:
This thesis brings together two different lines of research, the nature of passive voice, the nature of readability. Commonly, languages have a range of tools for detransitivisation, topicalisation, and impersonalisation, of which passivisation is one (Givón, 1981). Passives have important roles in our language, and prescribing against their use lacks a full understanding of these roles. Much of the concern around passives from writers, editors, and teachers is no more than folklore that has not clearly analysed various writing and reading problems. Many awkward sentences are not awkward because they use passives but because they are wordy, clumsy, or pretentious. Most criticisms have little basis in linguistic theory, and rarely is there more than passing mention of the important role that passives play in communication. Some uses of passives are inappropriate, being vague, ambiguous, or even deceitful. These inappropriate uses of passive voice give the construction a bad name. They have become ammunition for prescriptive grammarians to fire at all uses of passives, often with weak analysis and minimal reference to linguistic theory. ‘Avoid passives’ has become a mantra. I tentatively suggest that there is unlikely to be a cost to processing passives. Given the speed at which the brain processes clauses, any differences in readability (if they exist) must be miniscule. Consequently, I suggest that any differences are unimportant relative to the benefits that appropriately used passives bring to readability. Furthermore, appropriately used passives may actually improve readability, especially when there is greater interest in the passive subject than the active subject, and when the passive serves to connect clauses or sentences.

Abstract:
For the past twenty years, there has been a growing trend in translation studies to follow a deconstructionist philosophy and give translators authorship of their work. Translation, in this sense, is no longer a target language equivalence of an 'original' text by an author, but rather a creative process of 're-writing.' In this regard, translators have the possibility of showing their own voice in the translation. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether either of the French or English translators (Albert Bensoussan and Suzanne Jill Levine, respectively) of the Cuban novel Tres Tristes Tigres (Barcelona: 1967) intervened in the text to show their own voices; and in Levine's case, whether this intervention corresponded to a declared ideology of 'subversion.' A systematic analysis of the wordplay in Chapters 16, 17 and 18 of the two translations reveal significant differences. Whereas the French translation has only minor adjustments, the English translation shows a large number of alterations to existing source text wordplay as well as additional instances of wordplay. In the final tally, there are almost twice as many instances of wordplay in Levine's English translation than in the Spanish source text. From the results of the analysis and from Levine's own self-portrayal in her book The Subversive Scribe (St. Paul: 1991), it would appear that her extensive intervention in the text is ideologically motivated. However, closer examination of circumstances surrounding the actual translation process reveals that the author, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, greatly influenced the final 're-writing.' Therefore, Levine's translation was not so much subversion as it was a sub-version of the original.

Resumo: Análise de seis contos do livro "Primeiras Estórias", de Guimarães Rosa. O ponto de partida da análise foi uma estrutura linguística chamada voz média, uma espécie de síntese entre a voz ativa e voz passiva. Com ponto de partida linguístico, o trabalho se inspira na obra Was Geht Uns Noah An, de Wolfgang Von Schöfer, e tenta resgatar significados de palavras que se perderam ao longo do tempo. Assim, encontra-se um ponto de diálogo com a obra de Suzi Frankl Sperber, que defende que Guimarães Rosa utiliza um recurso que a autora chamou de abertura do sintagma e também o de fundir espaço e personagem na narrativa com o objetivo de potencializar, ampliar os sentidos. A presente dissertação explora as dimensões simbólicas da obra de Rosa, mostrando de que maneira o autor se abria e investigava os mistérios da vida. Foram levantados alguns temas que se repetem em todos os contos, e a partir de uma análise minuciosa sobre os contos, encontra-se um tema principal que é desenvolvido: a importância de viver é compreendida através do aprimoramento da alma - e isso se dá através do conhecimento não de ordem racional, mas prática
Abstract: Analysis of six shorts stories from the book "Primeiras Estórias", written by João Guimarães Rosa. The analysis' starting point was a linguistic structure called "Middle Voice", some kind of synthesis between active and passive voice. This work is inspired in the book from Wolfgang Von Schöfer, Was Geht Uns Noah An, and tries to retrieve some word's meanings that have got lost through time. Therefore, this work was able to dialogue with the work from Suzi Frankl Sperber, who defends that Rosa uses a technique that Suzi has called "syntagm 's opening", and also an important structural characteristic: Rosa merges the space and the character in the narrative, in order to amplify the possible meanings and interpretations. This current dissertation explores the symbolic dimension of six shorts stories from Primeiras Estórias and tries to analyze how the author explored the meaning and mysteries of life. Some subjects were noticed, and after a detailed analysis of each short story, a main subject is found: the importance of living is understood as the development of the soul - and this happens only through the acquisition of practical knowledge

Resumo: A presente tese tem por objetivo oferecer uma descrição e análise de aspectos fundamentais da morfossintaxe do Kaiowá (Guarani), que permita um conhecimento plausível de sua gramática. Inicialmente,. a tese tráz considerações à respeito do povo Kaiowá e sua língua, além de tratar da metodologia empregada na pesquisa lingüística de campo. Posteriormente, é apresentada a descrição seguida de análise gramatical do Kaiowá que projetou a pesquisa a uma análise primeira da marcação de caso e de voz inversa. Neste trabalho, defende-se a idéia de que o Kaiowá é uma língua Ativa/Inativa (Cisão Intransitiva), e que a. marcação de caso intra-clausal apresenta cisões motivadas por operações morfossintáticas e pela pragmática, o que resulta em diferentes configurações da marcação de caso na língua: nominativo/acusativo, ergativo/absolutivo ou ergativo/acusativo. Quanto à voz inversa, pode-se concluir que a análise sobre inversão proposta por Payne (1994) para as línguas Tupi-Guarani, aplica-se ao Kaiowá, e, pelo que se observa pelas análises, essa é uma língua de inversão semântica motivada pela hierarquia de pessoa.
Abstract: In this dissertation a description and an analysis of fundamental aspects of Kaiowá (Guarani) morphosyntax are presented. It results in a plausible knowledge of the grammar of this language. First, considerations on Kaiowá people and its language are made. It is also presented a discussion on the methodology adopted in the fieldwork of linguistic research. Second, the description is presented followed by grammatical analysis of Kaiowá that projected the research to a first analysis of case marking and inverse voice. In this dissertation, the idea of Kaiowá as an Active/lnactive (Split-S) is claimed. Splits motivated by morphosyntatic operation and by pragmatics are presented in intra-clausal case marking. It results in different configurations of case marking in the language: nominative/accusative, ergative/absolutive or ergative/accusative. Conceming the voice inverse its is possible to conclude that Payne's (1994) analysis of inversion on Tupi Guaraní languages is to Kaiowá. The semantic inverse motivated by the person hierarchy was also reveled through the analysis.

Resumo: Esta tese situa-se na área de Neurolingüística, buscando dialogar com a área da Aquisição de Linguagem. Seu ponto de partida é a hipótese do espelho invertido, proposta por Roman Jakobson ([1956] 1971), que prevê que os primeiros elementos lingüísticos adquiridos por uma criança serão os últimos sujeitos à dissolução na fala do sujeito afásico. O objeto de estudo desta pesquisa é a preposição ligada a verbos na fala de uma criança (R) em processo de aquisição de linguagem e de dois sujeitos afásicos com agramatismo (MS e OJ) em processo de reconstrução de linguagem. Não se tem notícia de outros estudos que tomem a preposição como ponto de articulação para o contraste da fala de crianças e sujeitos afásicos. Foram examinados dados longitudinais, dialógicos e de fala espontânea de R, MS e OJ e dados dialógicos dos sujeitos afásicos, coletados em situações experimentais. Estes dados, de naturezas diferentes, foram examinados separadamente, para que fosse possível contrastar o funcionamento da preposição (i) na fala da criança versus dos sujeitos afásicos quando envolvidos numa mesma situação dialógica: a conversa informal; (ii) e na fala dos sujeitos afásicos em diferentes situações dialógicas: conversa informal versus situações experimentais. Os resultados obtidos indicam que a classificação das preposições mais adequada é a proposta pela Hipótese da Gramaticalização, já adotada em Kleppa (2005a) para dispor as preposições num continuum de diferentes graus de gramaticalização. Assim, questões de freqüência, distribuição, forma e sentido da preposição determinam seu uso na fala da criança e dos sujeitos afásicos. Os resultados também indicam que a diferença de uso de preposições na fala da criança versus sujeitos afásicos, e dos sujeitos afásicos em conversas espontâneas versus situações experimentais é quantitativa, não qualitativa. Contudo, a maior diferença encontrada diz respeito ao estatuto de sujeito falante da criança e do sujeito afásico. A partir da análise de dados podemos dizer que a criança e os sujeitos afásicos movimentam-se na mesma língua, mas estabelecem diferentes (e incomparáveis) relações com ela. No âmbito da Neurolingüística, a Teoria da Adaptação orienta esta pesquisa, ao passo que no âmbito da Aquisição de Linguagem, a teorização de De Lemos ilumina algumas questões pontuais. Davidson, com seu estudo sobre malapropismos, apresenta uma visão interessante do ato comunicativo/ interpretativo e assim chegamos a diferentes concepções de língua, falante e fala daquelas adotadas nos estudos correntes sobre preposições, fala de criança ou afásico.
Abstract: This thesis was developed within the field of Neurolinguistics and aims some possible dialogue with the field of Language Acquisition. The starting point for this study is the inverted mirror hypothesis, posed by Roman Jakobson ([1956] 1971), predicting that the first linguistic elements acquired by the child will be the last ones dissolved in the speech of aphasic speakers. The object of this study is the preposition linked to verbs in the speech of one child (R) in the process of language acquisition and two agrammatic speakers (MS and OJ) in the process of language reconstruction. As far as we know, there are no other studies taking the preposition as an articulation point for the contrast between child and aphasic speech. Longitudinal, dialogical data were examined from both the child and the aphasic speakers: R provides spontaneous speech data, while MS and OJ provide as well spontaneous as elicited speech. These data, different by nature, were examined separately in order to allow the contrast of prepositions functioning (i) in the speech of the child versus the speech of agrammatic speakers when involved in the same dialogical context: informal conversation; (ii) and in the speech of agrammatic subjects in different conversational situations: informal conversation versus experimental situations. The results obtained indicate that the best classification of prepositions is the one offered by the Grammaticalization Hypothesis, arraying them in a synchronic continuum of different degrees of grammaticalization, as was done in Kleppa (2005a). Thus, issues concerning frequency, distribution, form and meaning of the prepositions determine their use in the speech of children and agrammatic subjects. Our results also indicate that the differences between the use of prepositions in child and aphasic speech in informal conversations are quantitative, not qualitative. The greatest difference, however, is related to the position of the speaker towards (his) language. The analysis shows that both the child and the aphasic speakers move within their language according to the possibilities given by the language, but the relations they establish with this language are not comparable. Within Neurolinguistics, the Adaptation Theory guides this research, while the theory developed by De Lemos comes to illuminate some specific points of debate concerning language acquisition. Davidson, with his study on malapropisms, presents an alternative view of the communicative/ interpretive act, and thus we reach different conceptions of language, speaker and speech from those assumed in current studies about prepositions, child and agrammatic speech.

Abstract:
This study is an exploration, on a professional and personal level, of metaphor as both an object of, and a tool for, research. The methodology used is qualitative, and overall the approach is phenomenographic. The research develops through three stages. Firstly, through an analysis of the metaphors found in the discourse of students, teachers and the government, a model of metaphor has been developed and used to give a framework for the examination of metaphor as the object of research. Secondly, the model has been extended to identify the metaphors by which the reality of the research process is constructed. Metaphor has then been used as a tool of research in order to identify and analyse the metaphors by which the research process has been framed by two researchers working with the same teacher. The three key metaphors identified through this application of the model; narrative, story and voice, have been explored to consider their applicability and relevance as ways of conceptualising research. Finally the implicit metaphor by which this entire study has been framed, research as metaphysics, has been explored through a personal reflection on the reality of the research process for the researcher. The study is located within a postmodernist paradigm through an exploration of the applicability of postmodernist assumptions to this research process. Throughout the work the voice of the researcher narrates her reality contextualising the research process.

Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that matron lit gives over-forties women a voice within contemporary popular fictional texts that they have previously been denied. This genre began to emerge around the turn of the twenty-first century as a sub-genre of chick lit and is now firmly entrenched in the mainstream of popular fiction. Contemporary popular fiction aimed at the baby-boom market has established its readership steadily. For the first time older female readers of popular fiction have heroines to whom they can relate. Matron lit discusses the gains and losses that are encountered by ageing women in Western society. Cultural attitudes about ageing and gender operate together to marginalise older women. Matron lit contributes to the debate around ageing and gender by reporting and exposing gendered and ageist discourses. In order to explore the impact of fictional narratives that represent the lives of older women, I draw on the work of Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. These theorists provide a frame of reference that assist an understanding of the constructive discourse which promotes normative cultural concepts of ageing and gender. In reporting on gendered ageist discourses matron lit exposes the repetitive linguistic process that undermines mature, female identities. While matron lit sometimes simply recites ageist discourses, it occasionally challenges them directly and frequently subverts them through irony. The particular issues which I explore over five chapters are: The importance of body image and sexuality, in the lives of matron lit heroines. The effect of ageist attitudes on wellbeing. The significance of home for matron lit heroines. The relevance of relationships and friendships to mature women. The pursuit of ‘liminal’ space where post-reproductive women can re-evaluate their purpose.

Abstract:
This study explores the perspectives and experiences of eleven adolescent girls in Cameroon on the meanings, purposes and barriers to education. Arts-based and visual methodologies are used to engage the girls in critical dialogue. A participatory approach gives value to the knowledge of local people as expertise and insight, which is often unknown to outsiders (NGOs, researchers, policy makers), in identifying issues specific to their own communities. With limited research done with girls, as opposed to on girls, this study seeks to hear the voices of girls, in-school and out-of-school, and make those voices heard in offering their inside-stories and lived-experiences. A new light is shed on their common everyday-life as they take part in the processes of working collectively, and collaboratively in exploring themes around education through drawings and picture taking. As a result, these processes lead to opportunities of knowledge creation and reflection on the realities that they face daily. Issues around identity, 'who they were' and 'who they could be', and sacrifice among the important themes.
Cette étude explore les perspectives et les expériences d'onze adolescentes au Cameroun sur les significations, les buts et les obstacles liées à l'éducation. Les méthodologies visuelles et basées sur l'art sont utilisées afin d'engager les filles dans des dialogues critiques. L'approche participatoire donne la valeur aux connaissances des gens locaux comme étant des expertises lors de l'identification des problèmes particulières à leur communauté. Ces connaissances donnent un aperçu particulier et souvent, elles ne sont pas connues par les étrangers. Ayant un nombre limité d'études faites avec les filles et non au sujet des filles, cette étude cherche à écouter les voix des filles et de faire en sorte que ces voix sont entendues en offrant leurs histoires personnelles et expériences vécues. En explorant les thèmes sur l'éducation à travers les dessins et la photographie, une nouvelle lumière est éclairée sur leur vie courante de tous les jours. En résultat, ces processus mènent à la création des connaissances et à la réflexion sur les réalités auxquelles les filles font face tous les jours.

This thesis addresses the topic of voice communications in the cockpit noise environment of modern `fast-jet' aircraft and helicopters, and in particular, describes research undertaken in support of the development of a system for reducing the noise level at the operators' ear by acoustic cancellation within the ear defender, known as Active Noise Reduction or ANR. The internal noise spectra of today's high performance `fast-jet' aircraft and military helicopters is described, and the complex interaction of acoustic noise transmission, speech, and microphone noise pick-up, which produces the total acoustic environment at the aircrews' ears, is discussed. Means of mathematically modelling the audio channel, quantifying the components identified above, and identifying areas of shortfall in performance are derived, leading to a procedure for the development of attenuation requirements, described as the communications audit. A model of the electroacoustic characteristics of the ANR ear defender assembly is presented and the sound field distribution within the ear defender/ear cavity, and its effect upon cancellation performance, is discussed. The extensive laboratory and flight testing of the ANR system that has been undertaken is reviewed, paying particular attention to the measurement and analysis techniques employed in such testing. Finally, the performance characteristics of ANR are discussed and compared with the requirements previously established. Design limitations placed upon the system by the constraints of its area of application are described, and the scope for future improvements is considered.

This thesis is presented in part fulfilment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Huddersfield. This thesis aims to explore the lives of seventeenth century noble widows in the north of England. The issues investigated include the demographics of widowhood, economics of widowhood, charitable activities, noble widows and the law, social networks surrounding widows and widows' political interests. Each of these subjects forms a chapter, where widows' contribution to each sphere through the seventeenth century is explored and assessed. The work also covers wider issues which affected women prior to and during marriage as they were also relevant to widowhood. Therefore it has been necessary to widen the scope of research from analyzing women's lives after the deaths of their husbands. Similarly, the geographical scope of the research, whilst basically entrenched in the north of England, extends in response to the variety of widows' experiences. The research has required examination of primary source material generated by widows such as letters, diaries, estate records and account books from institutions such as the British Library and private libraries such as that at Chatsworth. The second aim of this thesis is to examine more recent attitudes towards seventeenth century noble widows, encompassing the writings of nineteenth century historians and contemporary authors. The subject of this study is an under researched area and the thesis highlights the importance of the only part of a noblewoman's life that was lived as an independent individual. By scrutinising the secondary source material, challenging and criticizing general arguments proposed by other writers, debate upon the subject should be increased and new ideas expressed. Despite the social, legal, economic and political changes which took place throughout the seventeenth century, noble widows remained influential figures within the contexts of family, household and society as they exploited legal loopholes or accepted conventions in order to further their individual aims. This study advances the understanding of women's history by focussing on a neglected aspect of the subject, provides a new viewpoint for regional history and stimulates ideas for further academic debate.

This exegesis is a critical and reflexive commentary on my first novel (Taft, A.J. (2011) Our Father, Who Art Out There ... Somewhere, Caffeine Nights: Kent) and my struggle to fit my writing to pre-existing or newly-emerging genres. At the time Our Father was published (September 2011) a new publishing category was seeking to establish itself in the marketplace. Chick Noir first emerged as a feminist reinvention of the traditionally male noir genre with stories centred around a criminal story question. However, following the phenomenal commercial success of chick noir books like Before I Sleep (Watson, S.J. 2011), Gone Girl (Flynn, Gillian, 2012), and Girl On The Train (Hawkins, Paula, 2015) our understanding of what constitutes a chick noir text has changed. This exegesis examines my attempts to contextualise Our Father within the framework of Chick Noir, both as it existed in 2011 and as it has developed since. It has led to me looking at other possible categories for my writing including Feminist Crime Fiction and Feminist Noir.

The main objective of this study is to provide an understanding of the way Civic and Citizenship Education, as intended at the macro level is translated, implemented and enacted at the micro level. Moreover, it also seeks to understand the contestation and challenges of secondary school teachers as policy implementers at the micro level in transferring the new curriculum policy into teaching and learning practice. Adopting a qualitative research approach, empirical evidence and in-depth information were gathered through document analysis, interviews, questionnaire, lesson observation and field notes. The document analysis showed that there were similarities between Western and Malaysian concepts of citizenship education in that Malaysia’s Civic and Citizenship Education was concerned with developing good personal and patriotic citizens. This differed from England’s citizenship education that promoted political literacy and active participation in democratic society. Despite in the official document, Civic and Citizenship Education seems to be strongly classified and strongly framed (Bernstein, 1975; 1971), at the school level, this subject is weakly classified and weakly framed. Indeed, a closer examination in each school visited showed that the ‘battle’ (Goodson, 1998 : 45) between this subject and other academic subjects continue. The analysis also illustrated that the enactment of Civic and Citizenship Education was mediated, not only by school students’ ethnic population, but also by school contexts that existed in each school. This also led to the gap between teachers’ perception of citizenship and citizenship education with their teaching practices. Thus, this study demonstrated that the process of translating, implementing and enacting policy at the school level is not a direct process (Ball, 2006) as there are various factors that could mediate the way a policy is implemented and enacted at the micro level (Ball et al., 2012; Braun et al. 2011a).

Whether in common law jurisdictions or in German civil law, the issue of pre-incorporation transactions has always been the subject of considerable controversy. Concerned with the promoters, third parties, the company and its shareholders, the law has found it difficult to balance these frequently conflicting interests without neglecting the need for clear and simple rules. Common law courts, sometimes excessively committed to legal principles, have even come up with absurd results.
This survey looks at the various attempts made in order to reconcile legal principles and business requirements--legislative in most common law jurisdictions, juridical in Germany. It will critically examine the approaches taken in Anglo-Saxon jurisdictions and compare their results and reasoning with the solution found in German law. It will be seen that even among closely related legal systems, results differ considerably. The survey will illustrate how established rules of law have turned out to be largely incapable of meeting the challenge of pre-incorporation transactions. From a comparative point of view, some suggestions will be made in order to achieve a solution that is more satisfactory in result and reasoning.

Abstract:
Amoebiasis is the third-most common cause of mortality worldwide from a disease borne of a parasitic infection. It affects up to 50 million people annually, of which 40,000 to 100,000 cases are fatal. Entamoeba histolytica is an obligate protozoon parasite of humans and is the aetiological agent of the disease. Recent suggestions that other members of the Entamoeba genus are human-infective, and potentially pathogenic, have been investigated here. A draft assembly and annotation of the 25 Mb genome of E. moshkovskii strain Laredo is presented, to which multiple E. moshkovskii strains were mapped. The E. moshkovskii genome was found to be approximately 200 times more variable than that of E. histolytica. Performance of the four-haplotype test revealed that genetic recombination does not seem to occur in E. moshkovskii. As such, it is suggested that it be referred to as a ‘species complex’, rather than an individual species. A comparative genomic analysis of E. histolytica HM-1:IMSS, E. moshkovskii Laredo, E. invadens IP-1 and the avirulent E. dispar SAW760 was performed. Subsequent comparative analyses against members of genera representative of the diversity in the Unikonts clade enabled the identification of orthologous gene families unique to the Entamoeba genus. Analysis of virulence factors within this set revealed that gene families involved in adhesion of amoebic trophozoites to host cells play a key role in the development of invasive amoebiasis. The Gal/GalNAc lectins and members of the BspA family are of particular interest, being present in all analysed species, except for E. dispar. The presence of these key families, plus cysteine proteases, in the E. moshkovskii genome suggests that some sequence types within this species complex may be pathogenic. E. invadens was found to possess larger numbers of more variable genes within many virulence factor families, including the BspA family and the Gal/GalNAc lectins. This suggests that sequence diversity facilitates E. invadens’ polyxenous lifestyle. Finally, a novel species recently isolated from a human faecal sample - E. bangladeshi, strain 8237 – was sequenced. Its genome was assembled using multiple de novo genome assemblers and coding sequences were assembled individually. A combination of all methods tested was found to be beneficial in maximising the number of gene sequences assembled, which is advised as good practice in future similar assemblies. The phylogeny of E. bangladeshi, achieved using the combined assemblies’ outputs suggested that the novel species is human-infective. The work presented here utilised modern comparative genomic techniques to improve understanding of Entamoeba species, their capacity for causing disease and their potential impact upon the epidemiology of amoebiasis.

This study was conceptualised within the Aristotelian tradition of phronesis and dialectics (Eikeland, 2006; 2012) where the focus of the study was the identification of teacher's voice (Sutherland et al., 2010) using Songs of Praxis, an art-based reflexive account within a reflexivity paradigm of uncovering biographical perspective of identity (Alheit, 1992; 2009). This had two reflexivity contexts; within research (e.g. Rolfe, 2011a; 2011b; Rolfe, Jasper and Freshwater, 2011; Etherington, 2007; Simon, 2013; Ellis, 2004; 2007; 2011) and within critical reflective practice (e.g. Gardner, 2009; Gardner, 2014; Rolfe, Jasper and Freshwater, 2011). This reflexive process led to teacher voice development and transformation through a hybridity of creative pedagogy, teaching for creativity and creative learning (Lin, 2011; 2014; Sawyer 2004; 2011). This visualization was completed using reflexive accounts (referred to as Songs of Praxis) which created space for a reflexive relationship (Etherington, 2007; Ellis, 2004) allowing for emotional recall (understanding biographical identity) through to therapeutic inquiry by dealing with my Mask of Self-Hate (the name I use to describe my bipolarity). This facilitated my authentication and transformation as a scholar of learning and teaching. This study was conducted within an auto ethnographic action research and reflexive accounts methodology using cycles of critical reflection. The cycles of critical reflection are; teacher voice identification stage 1, the reimagination of professional voice framework leading to teacher voice identification stage 2, the multiplicity of voice prism. This led to teacher voice development stage1, the reflexive provocateur toolkit which developed into the Reflexive Classroom, teacher voice development stage 2. This led to the teacher voice transformation through the creation of reflexive spaces of creative pedagogic practices; digital reflexivity; and employability practices. This allowed for teacher voice identification, development and transformation which I illustrate within the 'portfolio' which I conceptualised around an 'Album', Songs of Praxis: Teacher Voice Identification, development and transformation'. This corroboration of the data (experience) has led to the contribution of this study to creative teaching practices, digital reflexivity and employability practices. I propose Songs of Praxis create reflexive space for the identification, development and transformation of teacher's voice.

This thesis presents the studies of terrestrial planetary atmospheric circula- tion regimes using simplified GCMs with different levels of complexity. Two different versions of the simplified GCM PUMA (Portable University Model for the Atmosphere) are used — PUMA-S with Newtonian cooling scheme and PUMA-G with a semi-grey two-band radiative transfer scheme and dry convective adjustment. A series of controlled experiments are conducted by varying planetary rotation rate and imposed equator-to-pole temperature dif- ference using PUMAS-S, and by varying rotation rate, planetary obliquity, and the ratio of optical depth in long-wave (thermal radiation) band to that in short-wave (stellar radiation) band using PUMA-G. These defining parame- ters are further combined with each other into dimensionless forms to establish parameter spaces, in which the occurences of different circulation regimes are mapped and classified. For the PUMA-S experiments, very coherent trends when varying planetary rotation rate (thermal Rossby number) is found. It is demonstrated that the GRW mechanism is mainly responsible for the equato- rial super-rotation observed in our experiments. Regular baroclinic waves are obtained at intermediate values of thermal Rossby number and depend strongly on the strength of radiative and frictional damping. Global atmospheric ener- getics in terms of Lorenz energy cycle and meridional heat transport efficiency also exhibits strong dependence on planetary rotation rate from our PUMA-S experiments. Theories of geostrophic turbulence (especially the recently in- troduced zonostrophic turbulence) and jet formation are examined using the PUMA-S experiments. For the PUMA-G experiments, Similar trends are ob- served with respect to varying planetary rotation rate, while new regimes like strongly subrotating atmospheres are found when varying obliquity in PUMA- G. Tidally-locked planets are also studied by modifying the incoming stellar irradiation in PUMA-G. It is found that atmospheric optical depth in the long- wave band plays an important role in setting the heat transport efficiency from day-side to night-side. These results provide significant insights into the ter- restrial planetary atmospheric circulation dynamics and the inference of circu- lation regimes of extrasolar planets. Future studies will focus on the effect of seasonal/diurnal cycle, the parametrisation of eddy heat transport efficiency, as well as the modification of the two-band semi-grey radiative transfer scheme to incorporate pressure broadening effects

This thesis explores literary representations in white male discourse of the voices of the racial Other. Tracing a chronological development from colonial to postcolonial texts, it closely analyzes the wider political and ethical implications of these representations in Daniel Defoe’s "Robinson Crusoe", Joseph Conrad’s "Heart of Darkness", Albert Camus’ "L’Étranger" and ‘L’Hôte’, J.M. Coetzee’s "Foe" and "Disgrace", J.M.G. Le Clézio’s "Onitsha" and Cormac McCarthy’s "No Country for Old Men". At the core of my research is the question how can white male writers resist the dominance of Eurocentric consciousness and be a witness to the racial Other and articulate his/her voice without recourse to prejudice and stereotyping. The representation of the Other transitions from the anonymity of slavery in colonial texts to identified and identifiable individuals in postcolonial writings. Through these novels the impact of national Independence, freedom from racial oppression and immigration − all legal expressions of freely articulated voice − can be observed on the traditional colonial power relationship. As a consequence, dominated, silenced voices gradually develop into silent refusals of acquiescence that withhold information. The impact of such resistance is frequently paralleled by a crisis of male identity and the declining stature of the white male protagonists who suffer imprisonment, death, sickness, confusion or defeat, as gestures symbolic of the decline of white patriarchal systems and challenges to accepted concepts of identity, humanity, justice, good and evil. In a globalized world the category of the Other encourages us to think beyond the known and recognize the validity of ideologies that challenge the authority of our own.

In the field of Creative Writing, much is written about narrative form and narrative voice. Narrator and narrative voice have always been important to me, and they were essential to the creation of my own novel, Over the Kite Path. It is my intention that this thesis (incorporating the novel itself, and the supporting dissertation) captures the creative process in a way that will be useful to other practitioners and writing scholars, by articulating complex and often abstract concepts in an accurate and unique way. The success of my novel was largely dependent on the success of my handling of its narrator and narrative voice, and my ability to create the illusion that my narrator was real. But how could this be measured, and – ultimately – how did extensive research and close analysis of my working practice contribute to this? While writing my novel, I researched many topics (including historical research, research on other practitioners in the field, and also the consideration of some of the philosophical and psychological aspects of my creativity), with a particular focus on the development of narrator and narrative voice. Within this context, I considered the novel’s place within the fields of literature and creative writing and compared my work – and my working practice – with other authors, in order to help me understand and analyse how my narrative voice had developed. As a result of this analysis and research, my novel has an original and convincing narrator. Whilst I am aware that the narrator can never be ‘real’, I am also comfortable with creating and maintaining the illusion of the narrator’s ‘reality’ for the reader. In addition, I have demonstrated the importance of this illusion to the writer during the creative process. Via a deeply analytical account my own experience while writing this novel, I have documented how my own creative work was enhanced by my research, and I believe I have provided new approaches and theories on the creative – and often existential - qualities of the writing process. It is my hope that these new approaches and theories make an original contribution to the field of Creative Writing, and will enhance the way in which the craft of writing is considered in the future by practitioners, critical theorists, and literary scholars alike.

Boston is a city steeped in history. Beyond the struggle for abolition, however, the historical experiences of the majority of black Bostonians, especially during the early twentieth-century, are lacking recognition. In this respect, the Jazz Age (represented here as circa 1919 – 1929) serves as a noteworthy case-in-point. For insofar as the impact of jazz music on social, political, and economic climates in cities such as New York, New Orleans, and even Kansas have been recorded, the music’s impact on and significance in Boston is yet to be addressed in any great detail. Simply put, the history of jazz in Boston, and with it an important period for black development in the city, exists in fragments such as discographies, newspaper listings, musical handbooks, potted witness accounts among others. Therefore, the principle aim of this thesis is to piece-together these fragments to form a mosaic history that reveals instances of black struggle, resistance, and progress during a period of heightened racial (Jim Crow segregation), political (the Red Scare), and economic tension. Essential to this process is not only the need to locate the voices of Boston’s black past, whether in text, testimony, sound and beyond, but also to create the conditions to hear them on their own terms. In order to achieve this, emphasis here is placed on tracing instances of voice, and as a by-product heritage, in musical form from the arrival of the first slaves to Boston in the first-half of the seventeenth century and analysing the ways in which these voices were perpetuated through methods of adaptation, appropriation, and evolution. This approach would ultimately assist in enriching the Jazz Age with a black art form that was not only unique but a distinct form of expression for a race lacking a significant voice in America at the time. In this respect, this thesis looks at the ways in which homegrown Boston musicians, such as Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney, and frequenting players, such as Duke Ellington, used jazz music as a way to oppose standard forms of white dominance, cultural elitism, and economic subjugation.

Copyright law grants exclusive rights to right-holders which prevent others from exploiting copyright-protected works without authorisation. However, this right is not absolute. Legislation includes specific exceptions which preclude right-holders from exercising their prerogatives in particular cases which foster creativity and cultural diversity within that society. The parody exception pertains to this ultimate objective by permitting users to reproduce copyright-protected materials for the purpose of parody. While the parody exception is not harmonised at international level, the EU Information Society Directive offers EU Member States the option of including a parody exception within national copyright legislation as part of a harmonising framework. The UK took advantage of this option, and introduced a new copyright exception for parody in October 2014. To understand the meaning and scope of the new exception in UK copyright law and to analyse whether EU harmonisation of the parody exception is achievable, this thesis examines and compares four jurisdictions which differ in their protection of parodies: France, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. This thesis is concerned with finding an appropriate balance between the protection afforded to right-holders and the public interest in encouraging parody. This is achieved by analysing the parody exception to the economic rights of right-holders, the application of moral rights and the interaction of the parody exception with contract law. As parodies constitute an artistic expression protected under the right to freedom of expression, this thesis considers the influence of freedom of expression on the interpretation of this specific copyright exception. Furthermore, this thesis aims to provide guidance on how to resolve conflicts where fundamental rights are in conflict.

This thesis examines the historical significance of the vocal methods employed from the middle of the seventeenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century in what became known as the bel canto era. It provides further exploration into the pedagogical procedures of the bel canto technique through a study of the premier instructors and singers from this period. The resurgence of interest in this tradition is addressed along with its impact on current vocal pedagogy. The vital role that vocal agility played as one of its most distinguishing traits is the primary factor under investigation. A discussion of the bel canto teaching styles in relation to their approach to agility is a major point of inquiry. By maintaining a link between present artists and pedagogues and the old Italian school, it helps the singer understand the historical implications of vocal agility as an integral part of healthy vocal development.

This thesis analyses the impact of marginalised groups using coercive mechanisms as a strategy for deliberative inclusion. It engages the literature on deliberative democratic theory that makes a case for using non-communicative mechanisms to gain entry to exclusionary deliberative forums. This research explores its limits by examining an “extreme” case where marginalised political agents employed threats of force – the apparent antithesis of deliberation – in an attempt to secure inclusion. The case is that of a military mutiny in the Philippines in 2003, where a group of junior officers took over the central business district to publicly air their demands for reform to the military. This strategy opened up spaces for junior officers who did not have access to channels for grievance articulation to persuade government officials to launch reform programs that addressed their concerns in exchange for their peaceful return to barracks. The case highlights that the manner of gaining access to deliberative forums has an effect on the dynamic of the deliberative process. It is argued that while coercive mechanisms can be constructive in opening deliberative spaces, they also risk limiting the deliberative process and outcomes that secured through coercion.

Abstract:
The study develops a framework for improving corporate governance mechanisms in Libya that takes into account its specific environment of weak formal enforcement and its corporate ownership structure, which is based on concentrated state ownership. The central goal of the research is to establish an adequate protection system for minority shareholders that can contribute to the development of an efficient and healthy commercial environment in Libya. To do so, the study examines the current solution for dealing with the conflict of interests between shareholders adopted by Libyan law under art 159 of Libyan Economic Activity Act (LEAA 2010): the minority shareholders’ actions. Using a social and economic analysis and a black letter approach, this study presents a novel analytical framework that formulates an appropriate solution for controlling conflict of interests between shareholders in Libya. To that end, the study addresses the following questions: how effective is the current mechanism for dealing with the conflict of interest between shareholders in Libya? What are the economic and social implications of the different proposed approaches? What elements determine which approach is preferable in Libya? And, finally, what are the challenges that the proposed law reform may face? To answer these questions, firstly, it is necessary to consider the general framework of corporate governance in Libya, examine the country’s current position as an economy in the early stages of transformation and analyse the potential impact of this transformation on corporate governance. Following this, I locate the dimensions of the conflict of interest problem between the minority and majority shareholders in Libya through analysing literature of corporate governance with regard to the minority-majority shareholder problem and applying it to the case of Libya. After that, I examine the efficacy of the current mechanism available in Libyan law (minority shareholders actions) as a solution for dealing with the conflict of interests between the minority shareholders and the majority shareholders in Libyan companies. However, the current approach is not appropriate for Libya for several reasons that relate to either the efficiency of the approach itself or its application and enforcement in Libya. After examining other possible solutions (e.g. a prohibition strategy), I propose the self-enforcing model as the most appropriate solution since it contributes to companies being able raise capital from investors, and it also lowers the number of conflict of interest transactions and makes a company’s transactions more efficient. Finally, the self-enforcing model does away with the need for external monitoring. However, this is not the end of the story; adopting such a model will inevitably lead to some potential risks (such as the risk that the minority shareholders may abuse their rights), which will require the formulation and adoption of new and specific strategies of corporate governance that are appropriate to Libya.

Domestic dogs have co-habited with humans for at least 15000 years. Close social interaction between the two species has promoted inter-specific communication and dogs now show advanced skills in responding to human signals in comparison to wolves. However, research into dogs' abilities to interpret human signals has predominantly focussed on visual gestures, while their responses to vocal signals remain under-investigated. Exploring the perception of human speech by dogs, a phylogenetically distant species, could provide new insights into the evolution of mammal communication. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to assess human speech perception by dogs. Speech is composed of two main communicative components: the segmental phonemic cues carrying the linguistic content and the supra-segmental cues transmitting information about the speaker such as their gender, age and emotional state. I first explore how dogs perceive supra-segmental cues, determining that they are capable of the cross-modal discrimination of human gender. I then provide a review detailing the mechanisms underlying cross-modal associations in mammal communication, before testing which of these mechanisms may enable dogs to cross-modally associate cues to human age. The results indicate that dogs learn to match some voices to humans according to their age category, while also perceiving more general cross-modal correspondences in the environment. Finally, I investigate how dogs dissociate the main communicatory components of speech during processing, providing evidence that dogs differentially process segmental and supra-segmental cues according to their communicative content. In doing so, dogs appear to express parallel hemispheric biases to those reported in humans. Additionally, the results provide the first clear demonstration that dogs attend to the combinatory structure of the phonemic content in learnt commands. Overall, this thesis extends our knowledge of dogs' perception of human signals, indicating that they are capable of perceiving each of the main components of speech in a functionally relevant manner. Together the results suggest that dogs share some of the cognitive and social processes involved in speech perception with human listeners.

Information systems form the backbone of many organizations today and are vital for their daily activities. For each day these systems grows bigger and more customized to the point where it is heavily integrated in the current platform. However, eventually the platform grows obsolete and the system itself becomes an obstacle for further development. Then the question arises, how do we upgrade the platform while retaining customizations and data? One answer is data migration which essentially is the process of moving data from one device to another. The problems of data migration becomes evident with extensive and heavily customized systems which effectively lead to the absence of any general guidelines for data migration.This thesis attempts to take a first step in finding and testing a set of general migration guidelines that might facilitate the creation of future migration projects. This is achieved using a comparative analysis of the general migration guidelines contra the process of migrating data between different editions of the Microsoft SharePoint framework. The analysis attempts to find out if the general guidelines are general enough for this migration process and leave it to future research to further assess their generality. This paper will also investigate the importance of using incremental migration and the ability to perform structural change during migration as well as how these issues is handled by the built in migration tool of SharePoint. In the end the general guidelines proved to be sufficient to express the SharePoint migration process and should therefore be used for further research to assess their worth in other projects. In terms of the second issue, the built-in migration tool proved weak in handling either incremental migration nor structural change which is unfortunate due to the benefits these features bring.

“Speaking Subalterns” examines the literatures of two marginalized groups,African Americans in the United States and Dalits in India. The project demonstrates how two disparate societies, USA and India, are constituted by comparable hegemonic socioeconomic-cultural and political structures of oppression that define and delimit the identities of the subalterns in the respective societies. The superstructures of race in USA and caste in India inform, deform, and complicate the identities of the marginalized along lines of gender, class, and family structure. Effectively, a type of domestic colonialism, exercised by the respective national elitists, silence and exploit the subaltern women and emasculate the men. This repression from above disrupts the respective family structures in the societies, traumatizes the children, and confuses the relationships between all the members of the families. While African American women, children, and men negotiate their national identities in USA, Dalits, the former Untouchables, attempt to realize their national identities guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. While successful resistance to oppression informs the literatures written by these historically marginalized peoples, thereby giving voice to the silenced subalterns, I argue that it is equally important to be attentive to the simultaneous silencing that has not ended. Moreover, we must be skeptical about the power seemingly achieved by the subalterns in articulating their claims to legitimate rights because re-presentation of subaltern resistance by the elite intellectualsand by subalterns themselves becomes a critical inquiry. Thus, while some subaltern women claim agency through representation, their narratives may not be exempt from hegemonic control. Others are thoroughly misrepresented by elitists. While some subaltern mothers undertake outlaw mothering by defying normative patriarchal motherhood, responsible representation can re-cover these tales which are silenced when these mothers succumb to their children and community’s disparagement. While some subaltern children may survive disastrous experiences, others may be traumatized into silence. Representation bears witness to these traumatic silences and the silencing processes. While historically emasculated subaltern men may vent and represent their rightful frustration and wrath against the oppressors, they may be simultaneously silencing their own doubly-oppressed women.

This thesis investigates text memorization, a widely used yet under-explored language practice in foreign language teaching and learning in mainland China. The inquiry was conducted along two lines: to conceptually examine a number of issues central to the understanding of the practice of text memorization in the Chinese context, and empirically inquire into Chinese learners/teachers’ practices and perceptions of the inclusion of text memorization in foreign language learning and teaching. The review of literature shows that (text) memorisation had been widely practiced in other parts of the world until recently, including the Anglophone west. By challenging the belief that emphasis on memorisation stifles and creative thinking, which is believed to be one of the key aims of Western education, I argue that memorisation or memorised knowledge is not only legitimate in but constitutes an important part of learning. I also demonstrate that Confucius’ theory of learning, which allows the coexistence of emphasis on memorisation and critical thinking arguably can be of relevance to education in the 21st century. Also advanced in the conceptual study is the argument that the methodological considerations underlying ALM (Audio Lingual Method), despite its western origin, match up to some fundamental Chinese conceptions of learning and teaching. The empirical study reported in this thesis addresses the need for a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the practices and beliefs of Chinese learners and teachers regarding the use of text memorization in foreign language learning and teaching. This study bases its methodology on semi-structured interviews complemented by small-scale surveys. The data was collected from a group of Chinese learners (N=42) and teachers (N=20) affiliated with 10 schools and 6 universities at three different educational levels, i.e. junior high, senior high and college, which constitute the major part of foreign language education in China. Data collection was mainly based in a single Chinese inland capital city and lasted for one year and two months involving two fieldwork trips to China. Analyses of the data lead to two major findings. First, both learners and teachers hold overwhelmingly positive perceptions of the use of text memorization in foreign language learning and teaching. The practice was perceived to be beneficial not only because it assists learning in a number of ways but because it builds the learners’ sense of achievement and confidence. Second, the informants’ positive beliefs about text memorisation, though context-constrained, might be more attributable to their perception of benefits to their language learning and teaching than to the view that the practice is consistent with traditional Chinese culture and values. In sum, this inquiry promotes a ‘different-rather than-deficit’ perspective in understanding Chinese learners and their learning practice as well as problematizing the uncritical assumptions about the negative impact of a Confucian philosophy of education.
