Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Using a sample of 116 languages, this article investigates the typology of comparative constructions and their distribution in Melanesia, one of the world’s least-understood linguistic areas. We present a rigorous definition of a comparative construction as a “comparative concept”, thereby excluding many constructions which have been considered functionally comparatives in Melanesia. Conjoined comparatives are shown to dominate at the core of the area on the island of New Guinea, while (monoclausal) exceed comparatives are found in the maritime regions around New Guinea. Outside of Melanesia adpositional and other comparative constructions including particle comparatives are most frequent in Austronesian languages. The unity of the conjoined comparative type in the core Melanesian area illustrates that, while morpho-syntactic profiles of Melanesian languages are heterogenous, significant convergence in the “ways of saying things” can be found across the region. Additionally, we find no cases of clause chaining constructions being used for encoding comparatives, even in canonical clause chaining languages of central New Guinea. Our findings thus offer no support for Stassen’s claim of a correlation between temporal chaining type and comparative construction type. Instead we suggest that an areal preference for mini-clauses may explain the dominance of the conjoined comparative in Melanesia.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the distribution of conjunctive and prepositional comparative structures in Slovenian. They are introduced by the complementiser kot and the preposition od, respectively. Comparative structures are categorised along three dimensions: (i) the morphological environment of the comparative morpheme (yielding amount and quality comparatives); (ii) the syntactic environment of the comparative morpheme (eight syntactic environments are discussed: (nominative) subject, (accusative) direct object, (dative) indirect object, prepositional object, locative adverbial, temporal adverbial, some other adverbial, and predicate); (iii) the syntactic environment (the same environments as above are discussed) of the associate (the non-elided phrase in the comparative complement is the remnant; its counterpart with the same grammatical function in the matrix clause is the associate). The comparison of conjunctive and prepositional comparatives shows that the distribution of the latter is more restricted and also exhibits more inter-speaker variation than the former. Conjunctive comparatives are acceptable in virtually all combinations of the above-mentioned parameters, the only exception being quality comparatives withan adverbial or predicate associate where the comparative morpheme is embedded in the associate. The only absolute generalisation that can be made about prepositional comparatives is that the associate must be either a subject or a direct object; all other generalisations are merely tendencies.

AbstractThis explorative study reports how three types of comparative constructions in Mandarin Chinese, namely adjectival, adverbial and differential comparatives, are acquired by English learners in a college Chinese-language classroom. We start with a hypothesis that the syntactic structures of the adverbial comparative and the differential comparative will be a potential challenge to learners because these two constructions are neutralized in English comparatives. However, the results of the three in-class tests we conducted indicate that learners have more difficulty with the adjectival comparative and the adverbial comparative than the differential comparative. Based on these results, we discuss effects of L1 transfer, difficulties in acquiring structures that involve optional components, and differences between heritage and non-heritage learners in learning Chinese as a second language.

Abstract:
This paper explores expletive ne in subordinate comparative clauses in French. I limit the discussion to (reduced) clausal comparatives, since expletive negation does not occur in (direct) phrasal comparatives. I show that expletive ne is favored in all comparative clauses, and argue that this provides direct evidence that it is still a part of synchronic French grammar. I propose that French comparatives should be analyzed as A-not-A constructions, and that expletive ne is a formally negative head that is licensed by a truth-value operator. Expletive ne thus functions concordally to mark the comparative subordinate clause as containing a negation.

Abstract:
Abstract In this article, I describe the internal structure, surface distribution, and scope possibilities for comparative phrases in Syrian Arabic. Comparative phrases may show surface displacement from their scalar associate in this language, subject to certain restrictions. The restrictions on surface displacement match those on scope construal, suggesting that scope construal involves covert displacement. Further, the restrictions on displacement are shown to be at work in ‘Comparative Deletion’, an ellipsis process operative in clausal comparatives. Comparative Deletion is shown to suspend barriers to movement involved in the semantic derivation of clausal comparative constructions, as reported previously for English. However, I show that attempts in the literature to reduce the barrier-suspending effect of Comparative Deletion to ellipsis in general do not extend to Syrian Arabic. Rather, the Arabic facts suggest that the suspension of constraints on movement under Comparative Deletion is unique to comparative constructions.

The letter as genre exemplifi es the presence of hidden connections between its literary, administrative and pastoral forms. The method appears to be especially useful in the reconstructions of past phenomena (works, movements, periods etc.).

This introduction illuminates the multifaceted nature of comparative law, transcending its conventional perception as merely a methodological tool. Rather, it emerges as a dynamic arena of political struggle, embodying diverse perspectives and objectives across various discursive exchanges. The volume delves into this complexity through contributions from esteemed scholars exploring topics ranging from granting rights to rivers in Colombia to the constitutional interpretive politics of Italian abortion rights. It underscores how comparative law shapes governance and policy, both reinforcing hegemonic norms and providing avenues for resistance and alternative perspectives. Ultimately, the volume celebrates the rich diversity and interconnectedness within comparative law, offering nuanced insights into its pivotal role in shaping global legal landscapes and public policies.

This paper motivates and presents a novel analysis of the "subset comparative" construction (e.g. John saw more phonologists than just Mary; John drank more than just coffee). I build on Hackl (2000) and Alxatib (2013)'s analyses of comparative quantifiers (more than three) to develop a unified account for both. This analysis entails that subset comparatives are formed via ellipsis of a clausal source; I provide evidence for this claim and against previous analyses that give subset comparatives a phrasal analysis.

Full text
Abstract:
Perhaps one of the most interesting and topical discussions to emerge quite contentiously within the legal purview in recent decades is the subject of comparative brand advertising. Comparative brand advertisements explicitly name the brand of another proprietor, and in doing so, use trademarks of that other proprietor. This paper will seek to expound on the subject of comparative advertising. This paper will further consider how comparative brand advertisements are regulated within South Africa, the US and the European Union and then ultimately deliberate the similarities and differences, if any, between the law and regulations relating to comparative brand advertising in each jurisdiction.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy, February 2001.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 187-193).
The main goal of the thesis is to present a novel analysis of comparative quantifiers such as more than three students. The prevalent view on such expressions advocated in Generalized Quantifier Theory is that they denoted generalized quantifiers ranging over individuals - entirely on a par with expressions like every student, some student(s), etc. According to this view, more than three is a determiner (like every) that is, even though morpho-syntactically complex, semantically a simplex expression that can be viewed as denoting a relation between sets of individuals. The proposal that will be developed in this thesis on the other hand maintains that expressions like more than three are also semantically complex. More specifically, an analysis of comparative quantifiers will be given that is fully compositional down to level of the formation of comparative determiners. The proposal is based on concepts that are independently needed to analyze comparative constructions. Three main pieces will be argued to form the semantic and syntactic core of comparative quantifiers: a degree function expressed by many, a degree description given by the numeral (which will be analyzed as measure phrase) and the comparative relation expressed by the comparative morpheme -er. Importantly, each of the three pieces can be empirically shown to interact in predictably (and partially independent) ways with elements inside the quantifier as well as with elements in the matrix clause. These interactions are unexpected unless comparative quantifiers are built in the syntax. Giving a fully compositional analysis is therefore not just conceptually appealing but also required to explain new empirical generalizations. The more general enterprise that this thesis hopes pave the way is giving a uniform and fully compositional analysis of comparative quantificational structures that does not exist so far.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to explore the nature of ethnic mobilization, its underlying dynamics, the characteristic elements that compose it and to assess how the political environment (associated with emerging and shifting political opportunities) influences the birth and development of ethnic movements. In order to do so, I developed a comparative study of Romani associative movement in two different geographical locations – Spain and Colombia. In an attempt to overcome the existing theoretical divisions, as a means of simplification and synthesis I developed a theoretical-analytical model which allowed me to operationalize the concept of ethic mobilization for analytical purposes. In this process, I established five key elements which compose ethnic mobilization and which I treat as macro-variables. Breaking down the concept of ethnic mobilization into these ingredients enables a detailed analysis of relevant elements in a more transparent way, at the same time allowing for an insight into relationships which these components establish between each other in a rather dynamic manner. Furthermore, a major contribution of this model lies in conceptualizing ethnic mobilization as a complex, dynamic and multi-level process which takes place in multiple directions, namely: internal mobilization (towards the constituencies), external sideways mobilization (targeting allies and bystanders) and external upward mobilization (targeting the opponent, mostly the State). This comparative and inter-disciplinary investigation is based on case studies and draws from a multi-sited ethnography approach. During field-work in Colombia and Spain, I relied mainly on qualitative methods and incorporated elements of ethnography, observing patterns of leadership and representation, on the intersection of public and private spheres among Romani actors of ethnic mobilization vis-a-vis un-associated members of the Romani community. This thesis is divided into eight chapters. In the first chapter I present initial reflections. In the second chapter, I provide insight into the concepts and their underlying theoretical conceptualization of the key terms relevant for the object of study. I provide an initial framing of Romani activism, to situate my discussion in what I consider as expressions of Romani ethnic mobilization. I also outline the theoretical-analytical model. In chapter three, I outline my methodology and research design, describe in detail the process of field-work and provide an insight into the process of data analysis and triangulation. In chapter four I “set the scene” by produce the necessary description of a broad and complex environment in Europe and Latin America, which allows to situate specific case-studies of Romani ethnic mobilization to in a wider context. Chapters five and six present the findings from the case-studies in Spain and Colombia, respectively. I provide empirical evidence, discuss and contextualize my findings with regards to Romani ethnic mobilization. Both chapters have a similar composition in which I discuss the actors and structures of Romani ethnic mobilization, the frames of collective identity and collective interests, strategies of collective action and the question of timing and external factors conditioning the phenomenon of ethnic mobilization. Chapter seven is dedicated to discussing my findings from both case-studies from a comparative perspective, by identifying similarities, synergies and differences as well as their causes; I also discuss my contributions to the field with regards to the understanding of ethnic mobilization as a multi-directional process. The final chapter, I recapitulate the findings and conclusions of this dissertation, providing a brief synthesis. I also consider the possible academic and social impact of my research and outline the potential future lines of research.

Abstract:
Constitutional Preambles are worldwide spread from the late 18st Century constitutionalism. And today, more than two to three constitutions are opened with such a Preamble. Yet, regarding to their particuliar nature, law studies dealing with them are quite rare, if not deny them. However, the certain onstituents'interest to them and their use by constitutional judges just disprove it. A broad and methodic study dealing with the wide range of Preambles shall be established in ordre to understand their functions and their judicial uses - though a jurisdiction can not use them. To that end, a broad - macro-comparativ - and then a micro-comparativ study must be done, since a systematic study on Preambles has not been done

Abstract: Monoterpenes are an important class of natural products with intense flavor and odor and can exhibit biological activity including antimicrobial activity, and applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industry. However, monoterpenes are lipophilic and volatile substances which demonstrate some chemical instability. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are macrocyclic carriers capable of complexing a wide range of substances and increase their water solubility currently been the subject of research and development of new products for the pharmaceutical industry. In this project a comparative study was carried complexing four monoterpenes (citral, ?-myrcene, limonene and 1,8-cineole) in ?-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-?-cyclodextrin, and biological evaluation of such monoterpenes, complexed or not. After these assessments was performed to develop a mouthwash containing the most promising monoterpene to combat dental biofilm. For physico-chemical characterization of the inclusion complex monoterpene-CD spectroscopic (UV-Vis), chromatographic (GC-MS) and calorimetric (DSC) were used to evaluate the solubility of the complex in water and percentage of inclusion of these monoterpenes in cyclodextrin. Antimicrobial activity screening for the monoterpenes was conducted across four strains of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 10538 and Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175) and four strains of fungi (Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Candida dubliniensis ATCC 22019, Candida tropicalis ATCC 157 and Candida parapsilosis ATCC 22019). This evaluation was performed by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (concentration that inhibited 50% of microbial growth, MIC) and Minimum Biocide Concentration (concentration that inhibited 100% microbial development, MBC). The monoterpene citral was more effective (MBC citral = 2.5?L/mL) against the strain of S. mutans (ATCC 25175). From these results the monoterpene citral was chosen to continue the studies in the proposed project. Were evaluated the effect of citral alone, complexed and incorporated into mouthwash formulations, to the growth and adherence of S. mutans (ATCC25175) on a solid surface. It was also assessed the cytotoxicity of citral and some mouthwash formulations afford low cytotoxicity against human keratinocytes (HaCat) cell culture. Both citral and citral complexed with CDs presented activity against the indicator strain of S. mutans (ATCC25175), preventing the formation of biofilms in vitro in the sub-inhibitory concentration (MBC/2 = 1.25?L/mL). When evaluating citral and their inclusion complexes embedded in mouthwash formulations, the in vitro antibacterial effect against S. mutans (ATCC 25175) was maintained and an increased solubility of the inclusion complex citral-HP?CD compared to monoterpene uncomplexed with CD

Abstract:
Phraseology and Construction Grammar have many interests in common, which is not surprising since first construction-based studies focused on idiomatic expressions (cf. Fillmore, Kay and O’Connor 1988; Kay and Fillmore 1999). The main aim is to analyse variation and creativity of intensifying comparative constructions of ugliness in Catalan, Spanish, English, and French adopting an inductive methodology based on corpora from the Sketch Engine software. Following a usage-based constructionist approach, we conduct an intra- and interlinguistic analysis on the entrenchment of constructions, semantic variants of meaning, as well as productivity by means of type frequency and those occurrences with low token frequency (hapax legomena) and creativity according to analogical extensions and constructional contamination.

Otman, Ismail. Thesis, Reims, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020REIMD002.

Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative analysis of the repressive legal rights in France and Libya with regard to Restorative justice. The author, in carrying out this comparative analysis, has employed both the descriptive and the critical analytical methods. The use of descriptive method gave a clear picture of the idea of restorative justice by submitting it to examination and taking cognizance of its application with regard to period, location and culture. On the other hand, the use of critical analytical method, made it possible to read and compare the legal texts of French and Libyan laws, in order to examine the extent to which they make it possible to achieve the restorative justice goals
