Abstract:
Although its replacement has not yet been fully developed, the traditional book is likely to be largely superseded in the foreseeable future by electronic publishing. Libraries will become book museums; with librarians as curators; many other librarians will find themselves dealing with unlimited and unpackaged information rather than with pre-packaged artefacts, in a role which will include facilitating and championing public access to information. The electronic ‘virtual library’ will encompass visual as well as verbal information; it will subsume art libraries except insofar as art libraries will become museums, but both the ‘virtual library’ and art libraries will continue to require the skills and vision of art librarians. Finally, in the short term, and perhaps indefinitely, the ‘virtual library’ and the ‘book library’ may not diverge to the extent of parting company altogether: the latter may continue to function as one gateway providing access to the latter.

Abstract:
The richness of the term “library” is revealed: from the common meaning (a depositary, collection of books and other publications) to that of the library science object (an institution, social institution). The attempt is made to identify whether corporate book collections make a document array, internal book collection, or a library. The case study of the “Laboratory of urban planning” Company (St. Petersburg) is offered. The main stages of the Company’s library development and vectors of work are discussed. Other corporate libraries’ experience is examined. The common features of the corporate and special, e.g. sci-tech, libraries, that satisfy information needs and demands in professional sphere, are revealed. The author also attempts to apply Yury Stoyarov’s four-component library model to the corporate library phenomenon. She speculates on whether the library core features are applicable to a corporate library – namely, collection purpose, document array orderliness, librarian supply. The differences between the traditional concept of a library and a library as a live selforganizing system are revealed. The need to include corporate libraries into the library science subject scope and therefore to expand social influence of librarians is emphasized.

Abstract:
Intelligent Material Management System, IMMS, was developed in a collaboration between Lyngsoe Systems, a commercial company, and public libraries in Aarhus and Copenhagen, Denmark, with the aim to reduce the time staff spend on managing library materials. The aim of this article is to shed light on what IMMS means for the library practices and hence for the librarian profession. Two research questions will guide the analysis: How do librarians and IMMS interplay at the public library in Copenhagen, Denmark? How does the implementation of IMMS impact the library practices at the branch libraries in Copenhagen, Denmark? With the theoretical lens of practice theory, the article shows how new norms and rules as well as new tools and objects are implemented with IMMS. Librarians need to be able to work with the new objects and tools, the new norms and to create an inspiring library room for library users. Their relation to collection management is changed, and their ability to evaluate materials is not needed in the same way when it comes to selection of titles for the collection. This sometimes creates a tension between the librarian and the system, especially when the librarians’ role in the practice is to perform the decision-making by the algorithm, and not to use their skills to evaluate resources.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the role of companies through social responsibility programs in the field of education in improving community literacy. Companies get social benefits when making libraries as their program targets, because libraries are public spaces frequented by many people. The research method used is explorative qualitative research with a case study approach in various libraries in the Surakarta region. This research was designed in accordance with the paradigm of cultural studies on current issues in village level libraries with various problems. Data validity was tested by triangulation techniques involving key informants in the study area. The results of the study describe the function of the library as a learning center, library in supporting the community literacy movement, and CSR in the library. Cooperation between libraries and companies is mutually beneficial cooperation. For village libraries, they will get donations of funds and infrastructure to develop libraries. As for companies by contributing to village libraries, the company has fulfilled its legal obligations and the company’s products or services are better known by the community and builds a positive image of the company.

For the last three years, roger chartier and i have taught an undergraduate seminar called the history of print Culture in Early Modern Europe and America. Although the content of the course has changed, one feature has been persistent: at least half our classes met in the rare-book libraries of Philadelphia. While we have often held the seminar in Special Collections at the University of Pennsylvania, we have also gone to the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Free Library, and the Rosenbach Museum and Library. This would not have been possible without the extraordinary openness and generosity of the Philadelphia libraries and librarians. But the work of those librarians has not only provided an infrastructure for the course; it has also reshaped what we've worked on and how we teach it.

Abstract:
Over the past 20 years, many thousands of CD-ROM titles were published; many of these have lasting cultural significance, yet present a difficult challenge for libraries due to obsolescence of the supporting software and hardware, and the consequent decline in the technical knowledge required to support them. The current trend appears to be one of abandonment – for example, the Indiana University Libraries no longer maintain machines capable of accessing early CD-ROM titles. In previous work, we proposed an access model based upon networked ‘virtual collections’ of CD-ROMs which can enable consortia of libraries to pool the technical expertise necessary to provide continued access to such materials for a geographically sparse base of patrons, who may have limited technical knowledge. In this paper, we extend this idea to CD-ROMs designed to operate on ‘classic’ Macintosh systems with an extensive case study – the catalog of the Voyager Company publications, which was the first major innovator in interactive CD-ROMs. The work described includes emulator extensions to support obsolete CD formats and to enable networked access to the virtual collection.

Abstract:
All librarians come face to face with design every day in their interaction with a library building, its furniture, and its equipment. Librarians in design libraries are in addition concerned with information, about and for designing. The library of the German Design Council constitutes the most comprehensive collection of design information available to the public in the former Federal Republic, and is complemented by a photo and slide archive, including company literature and a newly-established video collection. Although no use is made of modern information technology, user-friendly information services, including a periodicals indexing service in the form of cards which are also available to external subscribers, are provided. However, the dissemination of design information further afield is constrained by three factors. In the first place, designers themselves do not fully appreciate how libraries can help them. Secondly, there is little co-ordination in Germany of design libraries of different kinds and in different regions and administrative units. Thirdly, most German design libraries are insufficiently resourced to allow them to do more than fulfil a specific function within the context of an institution or a locale. Nonetheless, librarians of German design libraries have formed an action group and have taken the first steps towards working together, while the German Design Council’s publication Design Bericht (1989) has provided a directory of design institutions. Design Bericht will appear every two years; a similar publication encompassing the whole of Europe is envisaged. (A full English version follows the original text in German. Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to describe the scope and depth of the historic corporate annual report collections in twelve academic/research libraries in North America. For many decades, a few major academic business libraries have been collecting and preserving corporate Annual Reports (ARS), the reports sent to shareholders documenting the financial status and future plans of the company. Today these historic collections provide more than a record of the companies’ finances; they provide a glimpse into the social and cultural thoughts from the past and the corporate stories of individual companies. Digitization of these reports has only just begun; so, except for fewer than 900 companies (most of which have been on the Fortune 500 list), the companies included in these historic annual report collections are not available electronically. The combined collection of the twelve libraries includes reports from nearly 38,000 different companies. Stanford, Harvard, and Western Ontario have the largest collections. Harvard and Columbia have collections with significant historic depth, while Purdue has a collection with important late–twentieth-century holdings. The overlap of the collections is much smaller than was anticipated. The two largest collections, Stanford with over 18,000 companies and Harvard with over 11,000 companies, have only 3,668 companies in common. The overlap of companies between the largest five collections is only thirty-three companies. This research identifies these collections as unique and therefore valuable to the study of specific company histories and the industrial development in North America. Librarians need to preserve these collections and work toward digitizing them.

Abstract:
We have developed a method for spatiotemporally integrating databases of shop and company information, such as from a digital telephone directory, spatiotemporally, in order to monitor dynamic urban transformations in a detailed manner. To realize this, an additional method is necessary to verify the identicalness of different instances of Japanese shop and company names that might contain fluctuations of description. In this paper, we discuss a method that utilizes an n-gram model for comparing and identifying Japanese words. The processing accuracy was improved through developing various kinds of libraries for frequently appearing words, and using these libraries to clean shop and company names. In addition, the accuracy was greatly and novelty improved through the detection of those frequently appearing words that appear eccentrically across both space and time. By utilizing natural language processing (NLP), our method incorporates a novel technique for the advanced processing of spatial and temporal data.

Abstract:
Digital resources and services have become an essential part of the growing collection of libraries all over the world, and their relevance and importance in the higher academic and research institutions have been increasing day by day. Library users also embrace the electronic resources quite enthusiastically considering their multitude of advantages. On the other hand, the collection, development and management of e-resources demand a lot of financial commitments on the part of the institutions, and as a result, they expect and encourage a fair return on investment. Therefore it has become mandatory on the part of libraries to assess the usage and usability of their procured/subscribed resources. Usage statistics are now considered as one of the most prominent measuring tools that help the libraries to examine the usage of online resources and ensuring their optimum utilization. At the same time, the collection of usage reports from the vast number of e-resources is a challenging task for the librarians. E-resources exist in multiple formats such as e-journals, e-books; aggregated full-text databases, company, industry, statistical databases etc. and the usage data collected for these resources vary from each other. There exist many ways and methods to collect usage reports of e-resources. It can either be downloaded manually from the e-resources website, using administrative credentials provided by the publishers or automatically harvested through SUSHI (Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative). This paper attempts to draw the attention of information professionals on the enormous potential in the usage of e-resources by the libraries. It presents the IIM Kozhikode library’s experience in obtaining the usage statistics of e-resources and attempts to examine how these reports are used as a tool to assess the usage of e-resources. This paper puts forth the argument that the e-resources usage statistics acts as an indicator of the knowledge consumption of the organization, as evidenced by the relative growth in its research output, quality of education being imparted and its placement records.

Abstract:
In the modern digital society, innovative technologies are coming to the fore in the activities of libraries; with their help the libraries can focus on the value of their role in culture and education, meet information needs in the context of digital transformation. At the same time, libraries try to facilitate the work of their employees as much as possible and simplify the efforts of readers in obtaining the necessary literature. This can be achieved by automation of the process of delivery and return of library materials ordered by users within the premises of the library. As a rule, for such purposes there is used telelift — an automated monorail handling system designed for the delivery of goods up to 50 kg (documents, books, magazines, etc.) inside buildings and premises. Telelift is installed in many large libraries, including national libraries in many countries. In addition to telelifts, national libraries use some other document delivery systems. So, the national library of the Netherlands, which is located in one building, has three reading rooms and several storages in the same building, uses the automated storage and retrieval systems of Swisslog company. The article is based on studying the materials of websites of the national libraries, the appeals to the library virtual reference services Ask a Librarian, correspondence with employees of the departments of storage and library and information services of national libraries, as well as additional questionnaire surveys of libraries on the issues related to the storage of library materials. The questionnaire covered the following topics: conducting complete or partial audit, types of audit, use of RFID tags, delivery of material to reading rooms, including, from the remote repositories, the preferred format for issuing a document to the user if this document has a copy (microfilm, microfiche, electronic copy, etc.), as well as statistics of binding and restoration work, ordering necessary materials by readers, etc. The article presents the questionnaire survey responses of the national libraries of Switzerland, Korea, the Royal Library of Netherlands, the British Library, as well as the the Library and Archives of Canada.

My first job as a librarian was for a large software company (which shall remain nameless), working in the research library supporting one of its divisions. Almost all of the questions would come by email (at the risk of dating myself, this was the mid-90s) either directly to me or triaged through a request system. I handled questions about market research, software algorithms, trademarks, and anything else that happened to come up. It was a great place to work—one of those beautiful campuses, where the lounge is stocked with free soft drinks and you can come in when you want because everyone puts in much more than 40 hours a week. Abstract:
Per the vendor, Benchmark: Library Metrics and Trends “provides libraries with data visualizations that facilitate comparisons with customized peer groups, Carnegie classes, and nationwide data.” Navigating this database can be somewhat difficult, as it has no starting point that will be obvious to the user. It takes some time to click on the various tabs and determine what functionality is available and how to use it. Therefore, a new user might benefit from instruction in the use of this database from either the vendor or someone else familiar with it. Despite these complexities, this resource offers its users a broad and varied range of data on the institutions covered therein. This includes total expenditures, circulation, information services, FTE staff, collections institutional repositories, Interlibrary Loan, group presentations, hours opens per week, weeks effected by COVID 19, student enrollment, gate-count, and materials and operations expenditures. The last of these includes total salary expenditures for all FTE librarians and other paid staff, as well as student assistants, but doesn't include salary information for specific positions. There are two levels of access to this database, the first of which is free! It allows academic libraries to view and complete open ACRL surveys and see their responses to previous surveys, among other things. The second level of access is via subscription. It gives libraries access to all of the free features, plus a custom report builder, interactive data dashboards, and the means to generate custom peer groups. The cost of the subscription portion of this database depends on whether the library subscribing is an academic or company/corporate one, and/or is part of a consortia. There are also discounts available for ACRL members and libraries that have participated in the database's 2020 survey. Consequently, the subscription price can range from an annual cost of $3,000 (for consortia) to $428 (for academic libraries taking advantage of all available discounts). Overall, most libraries will find this pricing quite reasonable. However, it's advisable that potential subscribers contact the vendor for a price quote specific to their institution. The licensing agreement for this database isn't particularly long and is in many ways average in its composition, so it presents little reason for concern.

Abstract:
Given the changes in the environment, customer demands, and alternative media portals, public libraries are starting to rethink their business models. The purpose of this study is to investigate how business models for public libraries can look in the future. Using pragmatic constructivism as a paradigm, this paper investigates the research question through a case study of the Urban Media space Aarhus (Aarhus Library) with additional comparable data from Aarhus State Library. The empirical data has been collected through interviews with the administrative director of the citizen service center and libraries and with the area director from Aarhus State Library. According to the six types of business models by Henry Chesbrough, Aarhus Library lies between type 5 and 6, which is a company with a quit open business model that has close connections to both partnerships and customers. The study of these libraries implies that different elements need to be taken into account when defining a business model for public libraries. These elements are customer integration, innovation, and broad collaboration in order to satisfy the diverse customers’ demands. We suggest that future libraries have to be well adapted to changes and be quick at picking up new ideas both from customers and partners and other actors in society in order to cope with the ever changing environment.

Abstract:
The relevance of the study is due to the need to fill the historiographical gap in the study of public libraries activities of pre-revolutionary Russia as an element of the provincial cultural environment. We consider formation and activities history of Tambov public library (opened in the city of Tambov in 1833). Novelty of the work is the introduction of previously unused historical sources in the characteristic of public libraries. The subject of the study are staffing table features, use pattern of the fund, ways of functioning of the stock company in public library, specifics of shares issue and disposition, social composition of readers. An important element of the study is the research of Tambov public library decline problems in post-reform time, reasons for the lack of material resources and attempts to transfer institution to the balance of the Tambov city budget. We note the role of private initiative in the arrangement of library at different stages of its development. We assess the books catalogues published at the institution which are one of the first printed bibliographies of public libraries in Russia. In the framework of literary preferences of library users study, we consider the assessments of the gymnasium director and Tambov Seminary rector, whose tasks included supervision of students’ reading and librarians’ implementation of circulars and decrees of public education minister. Theoretical and concrete historical analysis of Tambov public library allowed to draw conclusions about the significant impact of the library institution on the local cultural environment. We emphasize that the formation of library brought together the structure of provincial society, contributed to the qualitative social and cultural transformations of local population.

The Society of Arkhangelsk Doctors (OAB) was founded in 1863 and was one of the first public medical organizations in Russia. The Society has been active for 55 years. Despite the small number (8–15 people), the OAB immediately began to publish the minutes and proceedings of the Society. Copies of publications were distributed to libraries and similar societies in other regions of the Russian Empire. In the unique library of the Kronstadt Naval Hospital, 30 copies of the protocols and works of the Society of Arkhangelsk Doctors from 1864 to 1896 are preserved. Immediately after the revolution (1917) in the Arkhangelsk province, as well as throughout Russia, the work of the OAB was suspended. The activities of the Society played an important role in uniting the doctors of the province, contributed to the growth of their qualifications and the development of health care in the Russian North.

Abstract:
The digitisation of print publications began on a small scale. In 2005 it entered a new phase, mass digitisation, with the beginning of Google's Books programme. This aimed to convert whole collections and libraries into electronic form. A US challenge to Google's digitisation plans in 2005 led to a complex legal dispute, between the company and authors, publishers and others, which remains unresolved. The advantages of the revised ‘Google Books Settlement’ (November 2009) are described, as well as the serious objections to it: these include uncertainties about ownership and use of the digitised texts and their long-term preservation, the quality of digitisation, monopoly of mass digitisation activity, and the fact that Google is not a permanent trusted institution. Alternatives to Google are analysed from the point of view of libraries and others wishing to digitise collections: these include public sponsorship and private partnerships. Future uses of the product of mass digitisation are hard to predict. Among them may be novel ways of analysing large corpora of unstructured text, and substantial interaction with contributor-users.

AbstractThe East India Company began to establish lending libraries for soldiers at its stations in India from about 1891 and, by the early 1830s, the majority of those responsible for the day-to-day operation of these institutions were keen to stress their beneficial effect upon the readers who frequented them. In a series of reports that were written at this time station chaplains and commanding officers emphasised that reading was having a positive effect upon the men's behaviour. What also emerges from these reports is evidence of a contemporary belief that the ‘setting’ in which reading took place determined the degree to which the activity was beneficial.

Abstract:
The popularity of genealogical research is linked to the growth of online genealogy services such as Ancestry.com, which, as of 2020, has over three million paid subscribers. Another 18 million people have taken genetic ancestry tests through the company’s subsidiary, AncestryDNA. This article interrogates how Ancestry presents information on race and ethnicity to users, asking if it is possible for researchers to build a critical racial identity using Ancestry’s services. Applying an understanding of whiteness that comes from critical race studies, the article examines the way race, and whiteness in particular, is presented in the business’s marketing, web features, and products such as AncestryDNA. These examinations reveal a company selling customers family history narratives that comport with the mythology of American egalitarianism, while at the same time essentializing race and ethnicity. The implications of these findings are significant for information professionals because Ancestry relies on partnerships with libraries and archives to supply material for the website’s research database. These partnerships compel archivists and librarians to scrutinize Ancestry’s information ethics. The article calls for further discussion and research into how information professionals can be agents for change in how race and ethnicity are treated in online genealogy spaces.

Abstract:
This article highlights that by using a standard that enables complete product model data to be transmitted digitally, a company can build open systems to make information available on many platforms throughout its operations. The world of CAD/CAM has viewed the International Graphics Exchange Standard (IGES) as its translation standard for years, using the system to move two-dimensional models from one program to another. While IGES does, in fact, do a good job of transmitting basic geometry, another translator—the Standard for the Exchange of Product Data (STEP) —has been gaining on IGES in popularity. STEP goes considerably further than just transmitting geometry; it provides users with the ability to express and exchange digitally useful product information throughout a product's life cycle, including design, analysis, manufacturing, and support. In short, IGES transmits two-dimensional drawings, while STEP transmits complete product models. The updated schema, consisting of an ASCII file written in EXPRESS, is simply run through a utility that merges the extensions that have been added by Unigraphics with the standard ST-Developer libraries. Updating the translator to incorporate an upgraded version of the libraries is just as easy.

Abstract:
This paper aims to provide a comparative analysis between the concept of insurance and the concept of takaful from an Islamic perspective. The method used in this paper is the study of libraries, in which the author seeks to find, summarize, analyze and ultimately deduce from various authoritative data sources. Insurance is a non-bank financial institution that offers protection against difficulties to the public. By paying dues or premiums that have been determined, the public has the right to make a claim that will be reimbursed by the insured party several funds that have also been determined. The insurer states to bear all risks that occur in the future. Therefore, all dues paid will be covered and managed by the company. However, it turns out that attitude is detrimental. Because the claim from the customer is not filed, then the customer's money is forfeited and entirely belongs to the company. In addition, the management of funds that are unclear and even almost unknown to customers makes this insurance practice illegal because it contains gharar and usury.

Abstract:
The purpose of this publication is to show the continuity and development of the basic ideas of bibliometrics over the past 15 years. Continuity is essential not only in preserving the subject matter, but also in personalities: Dr. Ball, the organizer of the 2003 conference, is actively pursuing research in this area and his assessments of the prospects for bibliometrics are quite reasonable and clear. Equally significant is the role of the successor of support, training and promotion work, the company Clarivate Analytics in maintaining interest in the practical results of bibliometric research. It is very important that in 2003 there were outlined the essential limitations in the possibility of using bibliometric methods for assessing the quality of research of individual scientists. These warnings are still valid today. At the same time, many of the criticisms made at that time related to the monopolistic nature of the of Thomson Reuters, which is no longer so significant, since several competing systems have appeared. In general, we can assume that bibliometrics (scientometrics) have excellent prospects. Therefore, the establishment of practical work of libraries of all types, but primarily university and scientific-technical ones, on servicing with the bibliometric data can be an interesting and useful addition to the traditional reference and information services of libraries.
