We review the current observational status of Sgr A∗, the compact nonthermal radio source at the galactic center. Sgr A∗ is a unique radio source at a unique location of the Galaxy. It is unlike any compact radio source associated with known stellar objects, but it is similar to extragalactic nuclear compact radio sources. The positional offset between Sgr A∗ and IRS16 places little constraint on the nature of the underlying energy source, since IRS16 need not be the core of the central star cluster. Sgr A∗ is still the best candidate for marking the location of a massive collapsed object.

This article revisits social sustainability of compact urban neighbourhoods based on first-hand evidence from four case studies in London and Berlin. It suggests a working definition for socially sustainable neighbourhoods, develops a tripartite integrative evaluation framework for measuring social sustainability of urban neighbourhoods, and applies it to four case studies in London and Berlin. Findings of this research are in line with some dominant arguments made in favour of social sustainability of compact urban form, but challenges some others. Research findings suggest that compact urban form is not an urban orthodoxy, but has multiple and contrasting social meanings and perceptions in different contexts and places.

We present the results of a detailed BVRI and Hα study of the isolated nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy NGC 6789. Judging from the literature the observed galaxy has not yet been resolved into stars up to now. On CCD frames obtained with 6m BTA telescope and 2.5m Nordic telescope the galaxy is well resolved. Its colour-magnitude diagram confirms the two component (core-halo) galaxy morphology, which consists of two stellar populations distinct in structure and colour: an inner high surface-brightness young population within 150 pc from the center of the galaxy, and a relatively low surface-brightness intermediate-age population extending out to at least 600 pc. The distance to the galaxy, estimated from the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) is 2.1 Mpc which places NGC 6789 close to the Local Group. From the mean colour of the RGB, the mean metal abundance of the halo population is estimated as [Fe/H] ≃ −1 dex.

This article offers a case study of the Compact Disc Database and ID3 tags, two instrumental information technologies for digital music on computers. Using an interpretive analysis of the technical and cultural features of the Compact Disc Database and ID3 tags as well as press releases and journalistic accounts detailing the rise of these services, this article places digital metadata within the broader history of recorded music specifically and digital objects more generally. Started as hobby projects, the Compact Disc Database and ID3 tags have evolved into central components of the digital music ecosystem. As keystone technologies, they contributed to the emergence of a digital music commodity. Since both technologies derive much of their value from user contributions, this article also contributes to current theorization on the role of users in the production of digital commodities.

<p>Public spaces should be places that support an intense civic life. They have been so throughout history, even if in each culture and historical period they have taken very different shapes and followed different design principles. Nevertheless, during the XX century, the Modern Movement faced some difficulties in dealing with public spaces. Too many times the zoning approach opposed the complexity, mix of uses and intensity required by lively public spaces, where social encounters and knowledge exchanges are made possible. In the XXI century, public spaces regained a major role in city projects and urban strategies all over the world. Their appearance was enriched by new forms. Besides the traditional squares, parks and promenades of compact cities, new metropolitan open spaces and collective places related to transport network nodes emerged. This paper focuses on the urban design of such contemporary collective places. Based on an overview of the historical evolution of public spaces, we identify some design principles (from the overlap of scales to acupuncture strategies, through to the complexity of relations between urban architectures) necessary to ensure that metropolitan nodes emerge as places full of urbanity rather than as deserted non places.</p>

Dynamical mass within ~0.1 pc from Sgr A* has been estimated to be ~ 3×106 M⊙. This places Sgr A* to be a candidate of a massive blackhole (Eckart and Genzel, 1997 and reference therein).

In this article we establish the arithmetic purity of strong approximation for certain semisimple simply connected linear algebraic groups and their homogeneous spaces over a number field $k$. For instance, for any such group $G$ and for any open subset $U$ of $G$ with ${\mathrm {codim}}(G\setminus U, G)\geqslant 2$, we prove that (i) if $G$ is $k$-simple and $k$-isotropic, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off any finite number of places; and (ii) if $G$ is the spin group of a non-degenerate quadratic form which is not compact over archimedean places, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off all archimedean places. As a consequence, we prove that the same property holds for affine quadratic hypersurfaces. Our approach combines a fibration method with subgroup actions developed for induction on the codimension of $G\setminus U$, and an affine linear sieve which allows us to produce integral points with almost-prime polynomial values.

The article describes the names of dwellings in the Even language in the ethnolinguological and cultural aspects. There is the semantics of lexical units nominating dwellings that have parallels in other Tungus-Manchurian languages. These lexemes are classified into three groups. The research is conducted on the basis of the local accents and dialects of the Even language; ethnographic, bilingual dictionaries of various kinds and expeditionary materials of the author collected in the places of compact residence of the Even are also used. The study enabled to discover 28 lexical units nominating various housing depending on their functions, construction and adaptability to the landscape of places of residence of certain groups of Evens. This is one of the facts that demonstrates the Even traditional material culture preservation despite transformation and assimilation tendencies destructive for language minorities.

We explore the possibility to accelerate particles up to VHE energies in such small compact regions around massive black holes, taking into account the two places in the black hole surroundings where efficient acceleration can be expected during the accretion-ejection process, namely turbulent low-luminosity accretion disks and rotating magnetospheres.

Such a composition places them among the most variable stars. In some systems the cool giant is a pulsating Mira-type star usually surrounded by a variable dust shell. Here, I present results of optical and IR monitoring of symbiotic systems as well as future prospects for such studies.

It explores how architecture and landscape architecture can transform urban environments into desirable places to live and capitalise on the potentials of interstitial spaces, outdated zoning and changing land-use. To achieve that, it looks at green and blue infrastructure design solutions and opportunities that foster sustainable intensification and by offering new views for health and wellbeing that improve the social, cultural and environmental health of the city.

The problem of urban planning in the context of globalization and the intensification of urban growth is considered in the context of sustainable development. Under UN-Habitat regulations, urban development must be in line with five principles: compactness, high density, mixed use, variety, limited land-use specialization. Compact urban development is a model for sustainable urban development, based on the synergy of three main dimensions: social, economic and environmental. In contrast to the approach to territorial zoning, the compact city model pays attention not only to the development of mixed land use, but also to social needs in places of employment, leisure, recreation, as well as the need for economic resources. In order to identify strategies for designing a sustainable architectural and planning structure, theoretical approaches to the practice of urban planning are investigated. Implementation of the provisions of UN-Habitat is aimed at reducing energy consumption and harmful emissions, preserving biodiversity, reducing the cost of infrastructure and increasing labor productivity, which helps to achieve a balance of social, economic and environmental goals of sustainable development.

The analysis of the possibility of expanding the scope of selective laser sintering technology has been made for the production of parts of short-range gas turbine aircraft engines due to the strengthening of stress concentration points by local plastic deformation by diamond smoothing. The technical, economic, and social effects of the application of this technology have been considered.The stress-strain state of complex-shaped thin-walled parts such as a disk and a monowheel of a short-life aircraft engine during their manufacture according to the traditional techniques from the compact materials VT8 and INCONEL 718 and according to the alternative technology from the materials Ti45Al3Nb (SLS) and INCONEL 718 (SLS)has been calculated and studied. The analysis of stress fields in stress concentration zones is carried out. Estimates are obtained from the static strength reserves of these parts during delamination and rupture of the force layers. A comparison of the obtained reserves of static strength for various places of stress concentration of parts made of compact and non-compact materials has been performed.The effectiveness of the use of alternative technology has been estimated by calculating the unit cost of production in mass production with a production program of 1000 pcs. The economic effect of the use of selective laser sintering and hardening technology in the manufacture of a part of a disk made of INCONEL 718 non-compact material (SLS) is estimated in comparison with the basic technology for the production of a part made of INCONEL 718 compact material in mass production. The comparison of the required capital investments for basic and alternative technology is carried out. The impact of alternative technology on the social and environmental spheres of human life has been assessed.Conclusions have been drawn about the prospects of introducing the technology of local plastic deformation by diamond smoothing to expand the scope of using SLS in the production of parts for the domestic aviation and aerospace industries and society, as well as its potential for other industries.

Non-scaling FFAG (NS-FFAG) rings have been proposed as a solution for muon acceleration in the Neutrino Factory. In order to achieve small orbit excursion and small time of flight variation, lattices with a very compact cell structure and consequent short straight sections are required. The resulting geometry, combined with the large transverse emittance of the muon bunch, places very challenging constraints on the injection/extraction systems. The injection/extraction system requires a set of distributed kickers, a superconducting septum and increased aperture in some of the main ring magnets. A scheme for both injection and extraction for a FFAG with triplet geometry is presented. In addition, a solution for the required kicker magnets is proposed.

AbstractWe show that any cocycle from an ergodic, finite measure preserving action of a higher-rank group to a closed subgroup of the isometry group of a proper, geodesic hyperbolic, ‘at most exponential’ metric space is necessarily cohomologous to a cocycle with values in a compact subgroup. Philosophically, this says that higher-rank dynamics is incompatible with hyperbolic dynamics; since hyperbolicity is, in some sense, generic among finitely presented groups, this places strong restrictions on the possible dynamics of higher-rank groups. We derive some applications of the main result. When the target group of the cocycle has no small subgroups, we show that the main result holds for a wider class of domain groups.

The main result provides congruences between automorphic forms which are Iwahori-spherical at a certain place ω, and forms with a tamely ramified principal series at ω, Thus, after base change to a finite solvable totally real extension, one can often lower the level at ω. For the proof, we first establish an analogue of the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence, using the stable trace formula. The congruences are then obtained on inner forms, which are compact at infinity modulo the centre, and split at all the finite places. The crucial ingredient allowing us to do so, is an important result of Roche on types for principal series representations of split reductive groups.

Planning and urban policies emphasise ‘sustainability’, but claims that ‘compact cities' are more socially sustainable and acceptable have been controversial and subject to limited empirical testing. After a brief review of the concepts and debate, we set out new empirical evidence based on household surveys linked to neighbourhood physical, map-based, and sociodemographic data for five British cities. Statistical models are developed to account for systematic variations in the main social sustainability outcomes. The results are considered both in terms of the role of particular urban form and locational measures, but also in terms of the broader patterns of effects of packages of measures. Outcomes relating to residential satisfaction, stability, neighbourhood environment, and safety are all shown to be lower in higher density/central places, but it is also shown that a good deal of this apparent effect is due to social and demographic factors. Interaction with neighbours and participation in groups is better at medium densities, controlling for other factors, while use of local services is, as expected, greater in denser, more central locations. These findings indicate that compact cities are not ‘win-win’ on all dimensions of sustainability but, rather, that reductions in transport emissions will have to be weighed against social criteria. In addition, urban form has different aspects, which have differing social effects, and this knowledge could inform the future design of ‘smarter’ urban environments.

One can now construct new processes whose density is derived from an exponential of a linear combination of quermass functionals of Ξ. If only the area functional is used, then the area-interaction point process is recovered. New point processes arise if we include the perimeter length functional, or the Euler functional (number of components minus number of holes). The main question addressed by the paper is that of when the resulting point process is well-defined: geometric arguments are used to establish conditions for the point process to be stable in the sense of Ruelle.

There are several excellent reasons for studying the Magellanic Clouds at millimetre wavelengths with a telescope such as the AT Mopra antenna:• The Magellanic Clouds are the nearest young, gas-rich galaxies to the Galaxy. They are therefore ideal places to study the processes which lead to star formation, and for comparing these processes with Galactic processes.• The distances of the Clouds are well established at close to 50 kpc for the LMC and 60 kpc for the SMC.• The Mopra beam at 2·6 mm (CO) corresponds to ~10 pc, which is comparable with the size of molecular clouds and complexes in the LMC and SMC (e.g. Rubio et al. 1993). The Mopra beam is also complementary to that obtainable at low frequencies with the AT Compact Array for continuum and HI studies (e.g. the 750 m configuration at 21 cm will give a resolution of ~12pc).

Use of Peltier effect for cooling is not new. Various attempts have been made to generate cooling using Peltier effect. Occasionally use of this effect for heating applications is also reported. This paper reports the development and testing of a hot cold tumbler that is capable of heating as well as cooling of a 300 cc can of water/tea/coffee or any other liquid. The compact design makes this tumbler portable and can be carried out without any inconvenience. Use of battery makes it possible to use this at remote places or where electric supply is not readily available. The testing showed positive results and tumbler was capable of heating drink can up to 60oCand cooling was achieved up to 20oC within a span of 30 minutes. To reduce this time it was suggested to increase the Peltier chip capacity and solar power to recharge the battery.

Context. Central compact objects (CCOs) are a peculiar class of neutron stars, primarily encountered close to the center of young supernova remnants (SNRs) and characterized by thermal X-ray emission. Measurements of their proper motion and the expansion of the parent SNR are powerful tools for constraining explosion kinematics and the age of the system. Aims. Our goal is to perform a systematic study of the proper motion of all known CCOs with appropriate data available. From this, we hope to obtain constraints on the violent kick acting on the neutron star during the supernova explosion and infer the exact site of the explosion within the SNR. In addition, we aim to measure the expansion of three SNRs within our sample to obtain a direct handle on their kinematics and age. Methods. We analyze multiple archival Chandra data sets that consist of HRC and ACIS observations separated by temporal baselines of between 8 and 15 years. We achieve accurate source positions by fitting the imaging data with ray-tracing models of the Chandra point spread function. In order to correct for Chandra’s systematic astrometric uncertainties, we establish a reference frame using X-ray-detected sources in Gaia DR2 to provide accurate proper motion estimates for our target CCOs. Complementarily, we use our coaligned data sets to trace the expansion of three SNRs by directly measuring the spatial offset of various filaments and ejecta clumps between different epochs. Results. In total, we present new proper motion measurements for six CCOs. Within our sample, we do not find any indication of a hypervelocity object, and we determine comparatively tight upper limits (< 230 km s−1) on the transverse velocities of the CCOs in G330.2+1.0 and RX J1713.7−3946. We tentatively identify direct signatures of expansion for the SNRs G15.9+0.2 and Kes 79, at an estimated significance of 2.5σ and 2σ, respectively. Moreover, we confirm recently reported results, measuring the rapid expansion of G350.1−0.3 at almost 6000 km s−1, which places its maximal age at 600 − 700 years, making this object one of the youngest Galactic core-collapse SNRs. The observed expansion, combined with the proper motion of its CCO, which is much slower than previously predicted, implies the need for a very inhomogeneous circumstellar medium to explain the highly asymmetric appearance of the SNR. Finally, for the SNR RX J1713.7−3946, we combine previously published expansion measurements with our measurement of the CCO’s proper motion to obtain a constraining upper limit of 1700 years on the system’s age.

This study empirically assesses the impact of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) on multi-actor global governance initiatives. Multi-actor global governance initiatives have emerged to strengthen joint action among different societal actors to tackle transnational social and environmental issues. While such initiatives have received a great deal of academic attention, previous research has primarily focused on businesses’ perspectives. In light of the important role of NPOs within such initiatives, critically addressing NPOs’ role by assessing their impact on the effectiveness of such initiatives is crucial. This article builds on the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)—the largest multi-actor global governance initiative in the world—and offers a panel analysis on a unique dataset including 820 NPOs from 68 different countries. The findings suggest that NPOs have indeed strengthened the UNGC over time, yet their engagement explains only a small fraction of differences in UNGC activity across countries. This study contributes to the emerging research on nonprofits’ social responsibility by fostering the actorhood thesis, which places higher responsibility for the impact and requirements for accountability on NPOs. Furthermore, the study supports discussions about the increasing political role of NPOs by providing the first empirical evidence for their political leadership and impact in multi-actor global governance initiatives.

ABSTRACTThis article describes the design and implementation of a redistricting simulation in two classes at a large university. Simulations often include a high degree of abstraction and, as a result, may not inform and develop an understanding of how the world operates. We developed a binding-arbitration game, based on the New Jersey model of a bipartisan commission, in which groups of students used US Census data and a set of mandatory and discretionary criteria to design congressional districts in Louisiana as well as advocate for their plan at an open hearing. In so doing, they learned about the complexities of redistricting and were introduced to geographical information systems (GIS). The student-drawn maps, on average, were more compact and preserved a larger proportion of places and parishes in a single district than the legislature-drawn map. The article discusses other features of the students’ maps and concludes with comments on the general decision-game design.

Scholars investigating European state development have long placed a heavy emphasis on the role played by representative institutions. The presence of an active representative assembly, it is argued, allowed citizens and rulers to contract over raising revenue and accessing credit. It may also have had implications for economic growth. These arguments have in turn been used to draw broad implications about the causal effect of analogous institutions in other places and during other time periods. But if assemblies had such clear efficiency benefits, why did they not become a universal phenomenon in Europe prior to the nineteenth century? I argue that in an era of costly communications and transport, an intensive form of political representative was much easier to sustain in geographically compact polities. This simple fact had important implications for the pattern of European state formation, and it may provide one reason why small states were able to survive despite threats from much larger neighbors. I test several relevant hypotheses using an original data set that provides the first broad view of European representative institutions in the medieval and early modern eras. I combine this with a geographic information system data set of state boundaries and populations in Europe between 1250 and 1750. The results suggest a strong effect of geographic scale on the format of political representation. The broader implication of this result is to provide a reminder that if institutions help solve contracting problems, ultimately, the maintenance of institutions may itself depend on ongoing transactions costs.

The main objectives of the introduced Directive 2002/49/EC are to harmonize the activities intended to control the harmful effects of noise pollution and to standardize the methodology for their assessment. Strategic acoustic maps drawn up in the EU Member States allow for determining the state of environmental noise pollution and planning preventive measures. This study involved analyses of noise levels in selected European capitals and Polish cities. The number of inhabitants who may be affected by a high degree of sleep disturbance caused by railway noise was also analyzed. An attempt was made to present a correlation between the scale of noise exposure and population density, the length of the existing railway infrastructure, and the type of areas with railways running through them. The most unfavorable type of development in terms of the number of people exposed to noise is compact development located directly along railway lines. Thanks to the acoustic maps, it is possible to locate the most noise-polluted places and establish a hierarchy of protective measures.

Our proposed rehabilitation device to prevent contracture of the ankle is easy to produce, transport, and install at the time of use in places such as medical institutions. This device is intended for use by hemiplegic people. The ankle is moved when it is worn, preventing ankle contracture. It consists of a new tendon-drive system using a pneumatic balloon actuator, power transfer mechanism, and ankle foot orthosis. This new tendon drive system using a pneumatic balloon was developed as an actuator of this device. The system consists of a tendon and a silicone tube. Both ends of the tube are closed. The tube expands with the supplied air, which distends the silicone tube and thereby pulls the tendon. This simple system is both compact and powerful. Furthermore, its materials and structure make it light. This paper describes characteristics of this tendon drive system using a pneumatic balloon, along with its composition and operation as a rehabilitation device for preventing ankle contracture. Results of operation tests using the device are also presented.

The present study considers the issues of organiza-tion of activities aimed at prevention of manifesta-tions of extremism and terrorism among migrant workers by local governments. The tasks assigned to local authorities are determined by national policy priorities and the local operational situation. There are specified a number of social effects that arise as a result of the influx of migrants, especially in the labor sphere. It is also noted that labor migrants may, under certain circumstances, become dissemi-nators of extremism and terrorism ideology. Special attention is paid to the processes of involvement of migrants from Central Asia in illegal activities. In connection with the above stated circumstances, there are determined complex tasks concerning pre-vention of extremism manifestations in places of compact settlement of migrants, as well as the tasks of interdepartmental interaction, general, complex and additional preventive activities, targeted work with certain individuals. In conclusion it is empha-sized that competent preventive work with labor migrants and the local community will allow to maintain peaceful interaction between different con-fessions and nationalities within a municipality.

The culturological and sociological study of the problems of sociocultural adaptation and the definition of the content elements and the target direction of the system target regional programs of ethnocultural adaptation of the youth of Meskhetian Turks in Ukraine are actualized. As tourism texts act as an important source of information for prospective tourists, this paper looks into the use of adjectives in English tourism texts by analyzing a small, specialized corpus of texts promoting destinations. The self-compiled corpus had its data taken from the official tourism website of Vietnam. Using TermoStat Web 3.0 (Drouin, 2003) and Antconc (Anthony, 2011) to identify adjectives in the corpus, the study seeks to explore adjectival usage in a discourse which is known for its hyperbolic language and offers a better understanding of ways adjectives help create persuasive texts. Results revealed a high percentage of adjectives in the analyzed texts. Besides, the extensive use and high selectivity of adjectives in the corpus help paint a complete picture of the destinations being described, hence connect those places with the reader. Notably, compound adjectives were found to be widely utilized for compact but detailed expressions. The findings are beneficial to instructors and learners of English for tourism and English writing as well as translation training and practice.

AbstractBased on morphological, anatomical, chemical, ecological and molecular evidence, Blarneya is synonymized here with Tylophoron. The molecular phylogeny derived from sequences obtained from sporodochia of Blarneya places this genus, described to accommodate an anamorphic lichen with white cushion-shaped sporodochia, within Tylophoron. This conclusion is further supported by the discovery of Tylophoron-type ascomata emerging directly from thalli with Blarneya-type sporodochia and producing identical hyaline conidia. In one specimen pycnidia were also observed. This represents a surprising variety of morphologically different conidiomata. A different anamorphic type was previously reported from Tylophoron, and this is confirmed here by molecular analysis for T. moderatum: besides thalli with ascomata this species has anamorphic thalli with an irregularly delimited brown sporodochial felt and brown conidia. Ascomata are not known from these entirely anamorphic thalli, whereas they do occur infrequently in Tylophoron species with Blarneya-type sporodochia. A key to all currently accepted species of Tylophoron is provided. In addition to the corticolous Tylophoron hibernicum, confined to humid forests, two saxicolous species with Blarneya-type sporodochia are described here as new: T. galapagoense, known only from Galapagos, differs from T. hibernicum by a thicker, more compact, beige rather than white, more strongly C+ red thallus, growing below sheltered rock overhangs in dry forests; T. stalactiticum has a C− thallus with stipitate, white, C+ red sporodochia; the species is known only from a single locality in Tenerife, on a large slope with volcanic boulders.

Aims. L 98-59 (TIC 307210830, TOI-175) is a nearby M3 dwarf around which TESS revealed three small transiting planets (0.80, 1.35, 1.57 Earth radii) in a compact configuration with orbital periods shorter than 7.5 days. Here we aim to measure the masses of the known transiting planets in this system using precise radial velocity (RV) measurements taken with the HARPS spectrograph. Methods. We considered both trained and untrained Gaussian process regression models of stellar activity, which are modeled simultaneously with the planetary signals. Our RV analysis was then supplemented with dynamical simulations to provide strong constraints on the planets’ orbital eccentricities by requiring long-term stability. Results. We measure the planet masses of the two outermost planets to be 2.42 ± 0.35 and 2.31 ± 0.46 Earth masses, which confirms the bulk terrestrial composition of the former and eludes to a significant radius fraction in an extended gaseous envelope for the latter. We are able to place an upper limit on the mass of the smallest, innermost planet of <1.01 Earth masses with 95% confidence. Our RV plus dynamical stability analysis places strong constraints on the orbital eccentricities and reveals that each planet’s orbit likely has e < 0.1. Conclusions. L 98-59 is likely a compact system of two rocky planets plus a third outer planet with a lower bulk density possibly indicative of the planet having retained a modest atmosphere. The system offers a unique laboratory for studies of planet formation, dynamical stability, and comparative atmospheric planetology as the two outer planets are attractive targets for atmospheric characterization through transmission spectroscopy. Continued RV monitoring will help refine the characterization of the innermost planet and potentially reveal additional planets in the system at wider separations.

The dominance of agglomerations in post-industrial economic development is a global trend due to the transition to a knowledge economy and the formation of consumer, compact cities. Production as such — agriculture, industry — goes to the periphery both in terms of their role in economy and in geographical terms. The main place is occupied by services: entertainment and ensuring high-quality reproduction of the population — healthcare and education. An essential condition for the successful development of peripheral locations is attainability of the core of agglomeration by a daily trip. Agglomerations are becoming virtually uncontested for ensuring relatively high general levels of labor productivity and quality of life for large masses of population. However, agglomerations also give rise to problems, the complex solution of which requires understanding of the new historic content of the traditional economic and geographical categories, such as central places, connectivity, geographical framework, relations between the center and the periphery. From a practical point of view, this should be reflected in federal programs for development of the largest agglomerations, which now present the only opportunity to quickly solve their most acute problems and realize their development potential, which will also be transferred to development of the regions adjacent to them. Federal support for development of agglomerations — the central places of regions, on the one hand is realistic in the prevailing conditions of centralized state finances and lack of local resources. On the other hand, unlike federal programs that disperse funds throughout the region, such support will contribute to the self-development of regions in accordance with the nature of their participation in the national and global economies, since the organic development of cities and territories within economic influence of the agglomeration is latter's natural function.

Abstract Forty specimens of the Narrowstripe cardinal fish Apogon exostigma were examined for gastrointestinal helminthes, and 62.5% were infected with a new trypanorhynchid larval cestode parasite. The morphology of its larval stage was studied based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The data revealed plerocercoid larvae characterized by a pyriform body lined with prominent microtriches; the acraspedote scolex had four overlapping bothridia; four tentacles protruded through the pars bothridialis; the armature of the tentacles was homeocanthous, homeomorphous, and consisted of falcate compact rose-thorn-shaped tentacular hooks; four oval-shaped bulbs in pars bulbosa; and short appendix at terminal end of the body. Molecular analysis of the 18S rRNA sequences verified the taxonomy of this parasite and supported its morphology. We discovered that there was a close identity (up to 87%) with alternative species obtained for comparison from GenBank. The data also showed that there were high blast scores and low divergence values between this parasite and other Tentaculariidae species. The phyletic analysis showed that parasite sequences in conjunction with existing data places this trypanorhynchid species among the Tentaculariidae. This species is deeply embedded within genus Nybelinia with close relationships to Nybelinia queenslandensis as a putative sister taxon.

The following paper deals with complex studies of the compact location of archaeological sites, including various sites and settlements in the key area of Beryozovaya Slobodka in the Lower Sukhona basin (eastern part of the Vologda region). In the course of landscape studies, the geomorphology of the site was refined, the confinement of the different parking places to various relief elements and the priority factors of ancient settlement preferences were determined. Landscape studies of the ancient population life support zone showed that relatively safe location and provision of the ancient population by various economic lands and natural resources were determined by the complexity and high diversity of the landscape structure formed at the junction of the valley-slope complexes of the Sukhona and the Uftyuga flowing into the Sukhona. Geochemical studies of alluvial-soil sediments in the multi-layered settlement of Berezovaya Slobodka II-III, containing cultural layers from the era of the final Paleolithic to the early Iron Age, made it possible to characterize the climatic conditions for the formation of cultural horizons, to estimate the periods of ancient anthropogenic influence and draw conclusions about the character of the reservoir and the periods of the river terraces formation.

The realization of some composite materials that allow the best removal of H2S from syngas was the main objective of this work. Thus, the optimization of the technological parameters for obtaining composites based on Zn-Ti was achieved. The paper studies the influence of calcination temperature on the characteristics of the binary ZnO-TiO2 system used to synthesize a composite material with suitable properties to be used subsequently for syngas treatment. The mineralogical and structural analyzes showed that starting with the calcination temperature of 700 °C the material synthetized is composed mainly of zinc orthotitanate which possess the corresponding characteristics to be finally used in the treatment of the syngas for its desulfurization. At this calcination temperature the material has a compact structure most likely due to sintering of the formed titanates. A maximum sulfur removal degree of about 97% was obtained by using a composite synthetized at a temperature of 700 °C (ZT-700).

The paper examines the life and legacy of Eugen von Engelhardt (1899- 1948), a German-Baltic aristocrat, author of the first German-language monograph on Belarus. A truly adventurous person, Engelhardt had been a soldier, landowner, forestry specialist and he traveled around the world before choosing an academic career. Born and raised in the southeast of Courland, in the places of compact residence of Belarusians, he developed an early interest to the Belarusian problem. Deeply involved in the Nazi movement, Engelhardt was one of the theorists of the so-called “soft line” of occupation policy during the War in the East. It envisaged a number of economic and political preferences for Belarusians, with the aim of fostering collaboration between them and Germans. In his concept, Engelhardt, a native landlord, used a Pre-Modern pattern of feudal relationship between the benevolent German nobles and obedient Belarusian serves, which was in no way compatible with the nature of Nazi politics in the East. Moreover, Engelhardt’s approach contained a number of serious flaws. Nevertheless, his main work, “Weissruthenien: Volk und Land”, for a long time remained the only work on this region.

Abstract Classifying “urban” and “rural” environments is a challenge in understanding urban climate, specifically urban heat islands (UHIs). Stewart and Oke developed the “local climate zone” (LCZ) classification system to clarify these distinctions using 17 unique groups. This system has been applied to many areas around the world, but few studies have attempted to utilize them to detect UHI effects in smaller cities. Our aim was to use the LCZ classification system 1) to detect UHI in two small cities in Alabama and 2) to determine whether similar zones experienced similar intensity or magnitude of UHIs. For 1 week, we monitored hourly temperature in two cities, in four zones: compact low-rise, open low-rise, dense forests, and water. We found that urban zones were often warmer for overall, daytime, and nighttime temperatures relative to rural zones (from −0.1° to 2.8°C). In addition, we found that temperatures between cities in similar zones were not very similar, indicating that the LCZ system does not predict UHI intensity equally in places with similar background climates. We found that the LCZ classification system was easy to use, and we recognize its potential as a tool for urban ecologists and urban planners.

Introduction. The article describes the names of berries and berry bushes in the dialects of the Khanty language. The aim of the paper is to systematize and describe the semantics of this lexical and semantic group of words and to identify dialectal features. Materials and Methods. The study is mainly based on the fieldwork materials collected by the author during the expeditions to the places of compact residence of the Synsky Khanty, as well as the materials from lexicographic sources. The main research methods are descriptive, component analysis, and elements of comparative method. Research and Discussion. In Khanty linguistics there is no research on the nomination of the plans, only a few random works. In the Khanty language there is a developed dialect synonymy with several names used to refer to the same plant. For the first time this research gives some names of berries, specifies translation, identifiesa and describes sacred names of berries. Conclusion. The presented material of this lexical and semantic group shows the richness and vastness of the vocabulary of the plants, which relates to the economic and cultural life of the taiga people, allows a better understanding of their linguistics.
