Community radio in Australia was established to empower ordinary citizens. However, people with disability are less heard than others in community radio, as with mainstream media. Listening to experiences of community radio staff and volunteers with disability can provide the foundation for plans to increase participation, agency and voice. Using semi-structured interviews, this practice-led research asked people with disability in the sector what empowers them, and how policy change, training and awareness-raising might increase their participation. It's The People's Radio, an accompanying 4 part radio documentary, tells the stories of community radio participants with disability in their own voices.

In addition, there is limited knowledge about the community participation of individuals who are homeless. This dissertation contains three studies aimed at furthering our understanding about community participation among individuals who are, or were previously, homeless. Study 1 systematically reviewed instruments that measure community participation in people with disabilities and compared these instruments by analyzing the content based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Perspective (ICF) classification. Seventeen instruments were identified as containing community participation items. None of these instruments covered the full breadth of community participation domains, but each addressed community participation to some extent. Mestrado em GestãoIn the last fifteen years, the growth of the global computer network known as the internet has facilitated the rapid emergence of online interactions of dispersed groups of people with shared interests. A new communication approach is required and in this context a new professional comes up: the Online Community Manager. The new mode of communication is not a fad, but it is a sign of a big change. For better understanding the role of the community manager this document aims to show how a community itself is build, what a community is and how can it be managed in virtual world. The scientific method applied to achieve the goal was Participant Observation in which the researcher carried on an internship into an online company for six months and worked as a Community Manager for Brazil and Portugal participating actively inside a real community during this time. A complete Observation was done once the researcher became a member of the group that has been studied. The literature review was based on the central concept of community in the broad sense. Later, it was an effort to understand how the concept is transported to the virtual world and how it fits into the new context. As a result some cases were presented showing how are the real problems faced by the community manager, how they can be solved, and finally some recommendations for a Community Managment policy.

Nos últimos quinze anos, o crescimento da rede mundial de computadores conhecida como internet tem facilitado a rápida interação on-line de grupos de pessoas com interesses comuns em vários ambientes. Uma nova abordagem de comunicação é necessária e, neste contexto, um novo profissional surge: o Gestor de Comunidades on-line. O novo modo de comunicação não é um modismo, é sim um sinal de uma grande mudança. Para uma melhor compreensão do papel do Gestor de Comunidades On-line, este documento pretende mostrar como uma comunidade é construida, o que é uma comunidade e como ela pode ser gerenciada em um mundo virtual. O método científico aplicado para alcançar a meta foi a Observação Participante em onde o pesquisador realizou em um estágio em uma empresa on-line por seis meses e trabalhou como gestor da comunidade do Brasil e de Portugal participando ativamente dentro da comunidade real durante este tempo. Assim, a observação pode ser considerada como completa visto que o pesquisador tornou-se membro do grupo que foi estudado. A revisão da literatura foi baseada no conceito central de comunidade no sentido amplo. Posteriormente, foi um esforço para compreender como o conceito é transportado para o mundo virtual e como se encaixa no novo contexto. Como resultado, alguns casos foram apresentados mostrando como são os problemas reais enfrentados pelo Gestor de Comunidades On-line, como eles podem ser resolvidos e, finalmente, algumas recomendações para uma política de comunidades on-line.

As a research community grows, it is becoming increasingly difficult to understand its dynamics, its history, and the varying perspectives with which that history is interpreted and remembered. This thesis focuses on three major components of research communities: events, people, and ideas. Within each of those components exploring how to construct and answer questions to improve connectivity and elucidate relationships for community members. Assuming the artifacts of a community (its publications, projects, etc) model a representation of its nature, we apply a variety of visualization and natural language processing techniques to those artifacts to produce a community data portrait. The goal of said portrait is to provide a compressed representation viable for consumption by a new researcher to learn about the community they are entering, or for a current member to reflect on the community's behavior and help construct future goals. Rather than evaluating a general technique, the tools and methods were developed specifically for the MIT Media Lab community, general principles can then be abstracted from this initial practical application.

Aims The aims of this study were to increase community pharmacists’ willingness and confidence to provide consultations for people with depression, and to enhance patients’ awareness of the pharmacists’ developing role. Research Design To observe pharmacist-patient consultations, the researcher developed a patient scenario. Pharmacist knowledge and attitude questionnaires were adapted, and a skills observation checklist was developed. Assessments of patient satisfaction levels took place before and after pharmacist training, which included a simulated consultation and action planning. The consultations were both video recorded and observed. Participants undertook a short interview with the researcher and each pharmacist developed his/her own plan for continuing professional development (CPD). An exploration of the interview transcripts was undertaken qualitatively. A University Ethics Panel approved the project. Results There were twenty-two pharmacists who took part in the study, comprising eighteen males and four females. MPharm students comprised one female and two males, and community pharmacists made up three females and sixteen males. The quantitative results: It was found that pharmacists possessed appropriate knowledge (the mean score was 75%, which showed that the pharmacists were aware of the safety and action of anti-depressants). The mean score for attitude was 54%, which tends towards the positive. When observing the simulated consultations, the mean score for initiating a consultation session was recorded at 28%. This indicates that the pharmacists were not very interested in initiating rapport with patients. However, the highest mean score calculated was 61%, which corresponded with closing a consultation. For data collection and action, the mean scores were 42% and 35%, respectively, and this indicates the need for improvement in these areas. The qualitative findings: The pharmacists demonstrated good knowledge about anti-depressants and held positive attitudes towards people with depression. However, the pharmacists were not very willing to exercise the responsibilities of their extended role or provide additional services for patients. The pharmacists lacked certain skills and opportunities to be able to enhance the patients’ satisfaction. The pharmacists in this study needed to improve their soft skills in some areas and engage in mutual discussion with patients in order to enhance patients’ expectations with the service provided. Conclusion/discussion The knowledge and attitude of pharmacists were good, but their consultation skills could be improved. Although simulated consultation allowed pharmacists to review their skills and practice the apparent impact on patient care was limited. This study has enable greater understanding of pharmacist strategies when consulting people with depression, and the findings could be used by those developing training programmes for enhancing pharmacists skills.

Computing is moving away from the desktop, permeating into many everyday objects and the environments in which we live. Many researchers in ubiquitous computing are excited about the potential to profoundly change the way we live by revolutionizing how we interact with information. Despite the excitement, few successful applications are making the transition from the laboratories to the mass market. While this could easily be attributed to the immaturity of the research area, it is also a manifestation of a larger problemâ the lack of coherent methods, processes or tools that assist designers in thinking about issues pertinent to ubiquitous computing, as they explore potential ideas and develop some of these into working prototypes.
To this end, this research presents an overview of the important characteristics of ubiquitous computing systems identified by many of the leading researchers in the field. Contrasting with conventional systems, we discuss the resulting issues and challenges, and their implications on the future directions of this emerging research area. In a case study, we use scenario-based design to walkthrough the design of a community computing application. At various stages of the design process, the need to focus on more issues relevant to ubiquitous computing design became apparent, resulting in the augmentation of scenario-based design.
The augmented scenario-based design process is proposed as a tool for helping designers conceptualize user activities within given usage circumstances and at various stages of the design process. New questions help to identify the most common pitfalls, enabling designers to produce systems that are more socially acceptable and provide a higher likelihood for adoption by everyday users beyond the laboratory. In initial testing, the augmented process was shown to produce better designs.
The ultimate ambition of ubiquitous computing technology is to be able to serve users anywhere, at anytime. However, taking into account the dynamic nature of user needs and usage situations, is a novel and non trivial undertaking. In essence, it is a fundamental change that requires designers to rethink many of the conventional answers and processes that help guide the creation of interactive systemsâ We provide a promising approach.Master of Science

The repercussions associated with young people's exclusion from policing can be detrimental. The police will lack a basic understanding of young people s problems, needs and expectations. In these situations, young people will be less inclined to report crimes and their own victimisation to the police, provide intelligence, and participate in the criminal justice system. This study is intended to provide a critical appraisal of young people s perceptions of Police and Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and community policing in Leicester, in an effort to delineate the implications of their exclusion from local policing and crime related issues. Community policing is a well-known policing philosophy, particularly for repairing police public relations through engagement and problem solving. The findings demonstrate that despite the fundamental benefits associated with community policing, conventional methods of engagement and problem solving have failed to reach out to young people who are, nevertheless, particularly enthusiastic about collaborating with the police. However, whilst the vast majority of young people are positive about getting involved in policing, there are important variations within young people in their perceptions and attitudes towards the police. Young ethnic minorities in general, blacks in particular, were passive and reluctant to collaborate with the police due to their experiences of stop and search and other repercussion associated with the law enforcement style of policing. A lot of these problems can be subsided by diverting police resources to community policing, but there are going to be strong financial, organisational and cultural challenges.

The psychological literature has, historically, portrayed people with an intellectual disability as socially incompetent, with low levels of community participation being seen as a consequence of this incompetence. More recently the literature has suggested that structural features of service design and staffing practices may affect the levels of community participation achieved by people with an intellectual disability. This study contributes to the ongoing debate in the literature by evaluating levels of social interaction achieved by people with intellectual disabilities across agency settings, and by re-examining the assumption that the interactional incompetence of people with intellectual disabilities is a primary determinant of poor service outcomes.
Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the current study examined the community living experience of 43 service users living in supported accommodation in rural and urban locations. In Part One, quantitative results indicated few differences in service outcomes between the two locations. In keeping with the international literature, few people had a range of relationships in the wider community and most spent their time at home, in the company of staff or others with a disability.
In contrast to the existing literature, however, qualitative analyses conducted in Part Two suggest that absolute levels of service users’ interaction competence, as gauged by the quantitative measures used in Part One, do not permit the assumption that service users’ deficits per se are a necessary and sufficient cause of impoverished social relations. Conversation analysis of naturally occurring interactions between service users and members of staff indicated that many staff behaviours prohibit the display of interactional competence by intellectually disabled people.
This study serves to add weight to the growing recognition that locating people in houses in the community is not enough to meet the policy goals of service providers. The study also suggests that the current romanticising of small, rural, communities as promoting high levels of integration may be mistaken. In conclusion it is suggested that service providers may profit from directing their attention to the fine grain of staff client interaction, rather than directing resources towards individually-based social skills training, if the policy goal of increased social integration is to be realised.

Background: This thesis explores the concept of frailty, as a latent vulnerability in older people, with the aim of refining its measurement by generating a new measure of frailty - the British Frailty Index (FI). This index was developed and validated in a cohort of community-dwelling older women, the British Women's Heart and Health Study (BWHHS), in 23 towns in Britain. Findings were replicated in another large Medical Research Council (MRC) Assessment of Older People study Methods: A systematic literature review examined the evolution of the concept and definitions of frailty. A meta-analysis on the prognostic value of current frailty measures confirmed extensive heterogeneity in the prediction of all-cause mortality despite consideration of age, sex, type of measure and duration of follow up. A 'General Specific' model of frailty was derived from factor analysis in the BWHHS population and replicated in the MRC cohort. Construct, external criterion and predictive validity of the British FI were assessed and its performance compared to another widely used index - the Canadian Frailty Index - with single indicators of frailty. Results: Frailty was explained by seven factors; physical ability, cardiovascular and respiratory disease and symptoms, visual impairments, other comorbidities, psychological problems and physiological measures. Associations with frailty included increased age, female sex, smoking, living alone, not living in own home, poor social contact and low socioeconomic position. Frailty was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in both cohorts and predicted hospitalization and institutionalization in the MRC study, performing better than the Canadian Index. Conclusion: This thesis provides better understanding of the multi-dimensional domains of frailty in older people. The British FI demonstrates validity in relation to adverse outcomes, provides a more reliable measurement tool and its application offers further opportunities for the prevention, detection and treatment of frailty at a clinical level.

Tributaries are geographic fingers of water moving across the landscape making connections with a main water source. As a title for my Master of Fine Arts research paper this metaphorically refers to the political, social and cultural streams which are expressed through my public artworks. It is also a poetic play on notions of paying tribute. This research examines the process of collaboration and cross-cultural arts practice and the relationship between a public artwork, the site and the audience. Four diverse yet interrelated public art projects are presented for my Master of Fine Arts degree. This research investigates the conceptual links between the four projects and the current discourse of cross-cultural collaborations. Although my art practice varies in location, materials, forms and approach, generally it is focussed around sculpture and installation and includes temporary and permanent public artworks. Two of the projects discussed took place in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, the other two took place in Vietnam. This research discusses the advantages, disadvantages and challenges in choosing to work collaboratively and questions the relationship of the author to the work and the importance of the process in creating an artwork. It also explores notions of hierarchy and power relationships that occur between artists from within the same culture and between artists from different cultures. Exploring the connections between public art and specific communities/sites has expanded my research into related notions of homes, homelessness and displacement. My approach to public sculpture is deliberately anti-monumental. This takes into account the relationship of scale within a public artwork: including the relationship of the work to the human body and to the surrounding environment I examine how contemporary public art can serve as a form of tribute to historic events and people of the past. My poetic approach to creating public art differs from more conventional monuments and statues of tribute and can be considered as a non-linear approach to presenting history. While the events these artworks refer to have taken place in the past, the issues surrounding them continue to have relevance to political situations of today.

No.The University of Bradford has recently pioneered a radical approach to engaging children and young people in learning about technology and the arts, thanks to funding provided by the English Arts Council. Young people engaged with youth services in the Bradford area were invited to take part in innovative performance art and digital media sessions held at the University. The sessions had a tangible output for the young people. The result was four one-minute ¿motion-captured¿ animations containing original music and dance ¿ produced by the participants themselves, with the help of experienced workshop leaders. This was packaged on a DVD which also contained a video documentary about the workshops, filmed as they were taking place by local film-maker and lecturer, David Robison. The participants were also able to take away their work on their mobile phones, video phones and portable Play-stations.

The central question posed in this thesis is why has the Queensland model of workers' compensation been so enduring? The legislation remained largely intact from 1916 until 2001, with the exception of the years from 1996 to 1998. This was so despite the fact the central feature of a state-controlled monopoly that underpinned this model was always potentially divisive in line with the variances between liberal-conservative traditions and social-democratic ideals that subsisted in broader political culture. In addressing this question of longevity, this thesis explores the capacity of an initially contentious piece of legislation to draw strong support from former opponents, and the argument is put forward that it is best explained through the development and operation of a policy community that fostered a shared set of core values relative to broad workers' compensation policy preferences. These core values were compulsory state monopoly, no fault insurance and full access to common law. Thus, the longevity of the legislation is attributed to the continued support by key stakeholders of these core values. The thesis also demonstrates that policy community relations deteriorated during the 1990s as governments responded to broader political pressures precipitated by reform agendas. Inconsistencies in core values and policy outcomes for each stakeholder emerged as governments attempted to assert unprecedented control over the direction of workers' compensation in order to meet broader political goals. The legislation was threatened as relations within the policy community proved unsustainable when existing core values were contested.

The central question posed in this thesis is why has the Queensland model of workers' compensation been so enduring? The legislation remained largely intact from 1916 until 2001, with the exception of the years from 1996 to 1998. This was so despite the fact the central feature of a state-controlled monopoly that underpinned this model was always potentially divisive in line with the variances between liberal-conservative traditions and social-democratic ideals that subsisted in broader political culture. In addressing this question of longevity, this thesis explores the capacity of an initially contentious piece of legislation to draw strong support from former opponents, and the argument is put forward that it is best explained through the development and operation of a policy community that fostered a shared set of core values relative to broad workers' compensation policy preferences. These core values were compulsory state monopoly, no fault insurance and full access to common law. Thus, the longevity of the legislation is attributed to the continued support by key stakeholders of these core values. The thesis also demonstrates that policy community relations deteriorated during the 1990s as governments responded to broader political pressures precipitated by reform agendas. Inconsistencies in core values and policy outcomes for each stakeholder emerged as governments attempted to assert unprecedented control over the direction of workers' compensation in order to meet broader political goals. The legislation was threatened as relations within the policy community proved unsustainable when existing core values were contested.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)

This study describes the meaning of fracturing a hip for elderly community-dwelling women. To provide collaborative, individualized and meaningful care for patients, it is imperative that nurses understand what the experience of fracturing a hip is like for the elderly individual. Giorgi's phenomenological approach was used to explore the hip fracture experience from the women's perspective. Data were collected through fourteen unstructured audiotaped interviews with six women who had fractured their hip. Analysis occurred concurrently with data collection.
The findings indicate that the overall experience of fracturing a hip is characterized by a sense of loss of control. The loss of control threatens the elderly individual's self-esteem and causes her to reevaluate her self-perceptions, beliefs about aging and expectations for the future.
The elderly women used various coping behaviours in an attempt to establish some control over their situation including attempting to make sense of the fall event, taking action, thinking positively and maintaining a positive attitude. The findings
emphasize the need for nurses to assist elderly individuals to develop a variety of coping behaviours aimed at regaining elements of control and reaffirming self-esteem. This study has presented in detail statistics and research related to the elderly and aging population and the many housing options that are currently available to this age demographic. The research has shown that Assisted Living Facilities are rapidly becoming the preferred method of Elder Care in the US, so much so that they have begun to offer nursing care which is typically offered only by nursing homes. Further exploration demonstrated that there is a lack of consistency in these facilities, and the evidence points to the need for a new model of Assisted Living that will focus more on the individual while still providing necessary care. This discovery has lead to the concept of creating an Assisted Living Development as the new model to be considered by future designers and Assisted Living planners. In today‘s changing demographic, economic, political and environmental context the livelihood strategies developed by the rapidly growing older population deserve particular attention. Lack of support by the state coupled with economic crises and decreasing family availability has meant that older people are increasingly expected to find their own means of support into old age, develop their own strategies and rely on their own resources. Heterogeneity in old age means that while some older people are amongst the most vulnerable and socially down and out, others have accumulated resources that enable them to implement diverse and enterprising livelihood strategies to maintain their wellbeing in old age. This study uses an explorative approach in its quest to understand the various livelihood strategies of the elderly. In-depth interviews and life histories have been utilized as data collection instruments. In addition to this inductive and qualitative research approach, the dissertation uses the sustainable livelihoods framework to examine the different kinds of livelihood strategies employed by the elderly in Mubaira to stave off poverty in old age in the absence of social security systems. A comparative analysis with other regional countries reveals that old age pensions have been able to reduce poverty at old age significantly. By engaging in different livelihood activities, in the absence of old age pensions, the elderly in Mubaira community in Zimbabwe have been able to make a living. Agriculture is the dominant activity the aged people engage in as they try to avert food insecurity. Besides agriculture, aged people diversify their livelihoods through self employments that add income value to their households. The impact of cash and non-cash remittances has seen aged people being able to buy basic goods and a few essentials. Although the state has been dysfunctional, civil society has stepped in to address the livelihood challenges faced by the aged population and in v particular to provide an alternative solution to the needs of the elderly people within the sustainable livelihoods framework which remains one of the most important models for the analysis of rural livelihoods. Through the livelihoods approach‘s vulnerability approach the study also analyses the various impacts affecting the attainment of sustainable livelihood outcomes. Through the utilization of the livelihoods framework in addition to the qualitative research methodology as indicated above, the study found that livelihood activities of the aged require a stock of capital assets which include natural, human, physical, social and financial capital. The life histories of the aged in Mubaira revealed that through the years the aged did accumulate various assets that assist them even now. As the life course perspective suggests events in earlier life do have a bearing on later life, access to a range of capital assets helped old aged people in Mubaira to fully engage in livelihood strategies that ensured their survival and escape from poverty.

Abstract With the growing proportion of older people and increasing use of drugs in this population, it is important to study how drugs affect oral health among older people. The aim of this thesis was to study whether sedative load, which represents cumulative exposure to drugs with sedative properties, is associated with oral health among community-dwelling older people. The focus was on a dry mouth, oral health behavior, dental caries, and infection in the periodontium. In addition, sedative load and anticholinergic burden were compared. The present study population was a subpopulation from an intervention study “Geriatric Multidisciplinary Strategy for Good Care of the Elderly”. The study population consisted of 159 community-dwelling, dentate, and non-smoking people aged 75 or older from the city of Kuopio, Finland. Data were collected with interviews, geriatric assessments, and clinical oral examinations. Sedative load was determined by using a previously published method. The study showed that participants with a sedative load were more likely to have dental caries, but not periodontitis, when compared with participants without a sedative load. Sedative load was associated with decreased stimulated salivary secretion and less strongly with unstimulated salivary secretion but not with xerostomia. The results also showed that sedative load was associated with poor or insufficient oral health behavior. Anticholinergic burden was associated with low unstimulated salivary secretion and xerostomia, but not with low stimulated salivary secretion. In conclusion, cumulative exposure to drugs with sedative properties was associated with insufficient oral self-care and poor oral health. The results from this study emphasize the fact that older people using drugs with sedative properties require thorough prophylaxis measures and regular dental check-ups because of their high risk of having poor oral healthTiivistelmä Väestön iäkkäiden henkilöiden osuuden kasvaessa ja heidän lääkkeiden käytön lisääntyessä on tärkeää tutkia, miten lääkkeet vaikuttavat ikääntyneiden suun terveyteen. Lisäksi tutkittiin antikolinergisen kuorman yhteyttä kuivaan suuhun ja tuloksia verrattiin sedatiivikuormaan. Tutkimuspopulaatio oli osa geriatrista Hyvän Hoidon Strategia -interventiotutkimusta (HHS). Populaatio koostui 159 kotona asuvasta 75-vuotiaasta tai sitä vanhemmasta hampaallisesta, ei-tupakoivasta kuopiolaisesta. Tutkimusmateriaali kerättiin haastattelulla, geriatrisella tutkimuksella sekä kliinisellä suun tutkimuksella. Sedatiivikuorma laskettiin käyttäen aiemmin kehitettyä mallia, jossa määritetään kokonaislääkityksestä aiheutuva sedatiivikuorma. The following three chapters aim to explore the process of individual transition from prison to the community. In the United States of America (U.S) the transition from prison to the community is called re-entry. The term describes the process of leaving prison and returning to the community. Re-entry is not a form of supervision or legal status and all prisoners, other than those who never leave prison, experience re-entry. The body of research addressing offender re-entry in the U.S has been steadily increasing over the last ten years (Arditti & Parkman, 2011; Petersilia & Travis, 2001; Visher & Travis, 2003). Much of the early literature focused on recidivism in adults (Langan & Levin, 2002; Tracy & Kempf-Leonard, 1996) but there has been an increase in attention on longitudinal studies that aim to understand the processes involved in reintegration. This research addresses individual change in relation to desistance in the U.S (Bushway et al., 2001; Laub & Sampson, 2001). There is less research on adult re-entry in the United Kingdom (U.K) possibly due to lower rates of imprisonment compared to the U.S. Differences between the U.S and U.K justice systems mean it is difficult to generalise research findings relating to individual experience across continents. Only a handful of studies focus on young people’s re-entry in the U.K (Meek, 2007; Barry, 2010; Champion & Clare, 2006) and there is none that tries to understand the experience of transition from juvenile custodial services to community youth justice services for young people. The following three chapters aim to contribute to this area of research. Each of the chapters is presented as a standalone component that adds to this shared area of research. The three components summarised below are as follows: firstly a systematic review of all the current published research aims to understand the experience of re-entry for all age-groups; secondly a qualitative empirical paper explores the meaning and impact of transition for young people; finally a concluding discussion extends the dialogue about the empirical research findings. It also provides a lay summary of the empirical study for young people and presents a future research proposal which would extend the empirical research. Chapter 1 presents a systematic review addressing the question: what is the experience of transition from custody to community for young people? Due to the limited research exploring young people’s re-entry, literature addressing the adult re-entry experience was included in this review. After initial scoping of several research databases, three were searched following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews) statement guidelines (Moher et al., 2009). A total of 835 studies were initially retrieved, of which 10 articles met the inclusion criteria. A narrative synthesis of their findings is presented. The literature suggests several common themes that are important in understanding the meaning and impact of transition from custody to the community. These include social components, such as accommodation and interpersonal relationships and psychological components, such as identity and coping skills. The literature acknowledges that there are differences between adults and young people experiencing re-entry, possibly related to developmental stages (Abrams, 2007; Arditti & Parkman, 2011). This may have implications for services offering support for young people and requires further research. This systematic review has been written in accordance with submission guidelines for publication in the journal of ‘Psychology, Crime and Law’. Chapter 2 extends the research discussed in the systematic review and contributes to the literature concerning young people’s experience of re-entry. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to explore how young people made sense of their individual transition experience from custody to the community. Findings demonstrate five superordinate themes that are important in the transition. These are: ‘A beginning and ending to prison’, ‘Family and friendship systems of offending’, ‘A new ‘me’ in the community’, ‘Life on the out’ and ‘Justice system supporting and enforcing change’. Findings are consistent with and extend the current literature on young people’s experience of transition from custody to the community. Clinical implications tentatively indicate that the continuity in care provision, family and peer relationships and Licence conditions of release all impact on the transition experience for young people. These dimensions may be useful in considering service development. This empirical paper has been written in accordance with submission guidelines for publication in the journal of ‘Legal and Criminological Psychology’. Chapter 3 provides an extended concluding discussion, providing a detailed discussion of the empirical findings and how they are relevant to theory, research and practice. A short lay summary of the empirical paper is also presented. This is for the benefit of young people making the transition from custody to community. Given that previous research indicates that this group of people is often marginalised (Barry, 2010); it was considered ethically responsible to develop a summary that was accessible and validating of young people’s experience. Therefore, a version is also presented in a short leaflet and a podcast recording of the summary aims to improve accessibility of the information for people with a range of literacy abilities. The podcast recording will not be published on-line until the empirical research has been published. The end of this chapter presents a proposal for future research, based on the empirical paper’s extended discussion and conclusions. In contributing to the research on young people’s experience of re-entry in the U.K, it is hoped that the meaning and impact of transition for this often marginalised group of people will be acknowledged.

This thesis argues that there is a clear imbalance in the representation of crime in the newspaper, Grocott’s Mail, in Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The thesis concludes that the system of marginalisation and segregation which was established during the apartheid era is the foundation for the continued segregation and marginalisation of certain groups of people in Grahamstown as depicted in crime journalism. Previous research shows that not only people, but spaces are marginalised through media representations of crime. As people are represented as dangerous, so too the spaces they occupy become dangerous spaces. Importantly, the research shows that discourses of marginalisation are present in newspaper reports reproducing the discourses prominent in society, and in turn, the newspaper itself perpetuates these marginalising discourses. This extends into the coverage that different crimes receive in newspapers. For instance, the reports show that a middle-class audience will be more concerned with property crime in middle-class neighbourhoods, than other crimes in lower-class neighbourhoods. I argue that not only the type of crime, but the severity, the effect, and the necessity for justice represented by the newspaper, are all largely determined by the region of the crime. Further, I show that the criminal is not only demonised and represented as individually deviant in the reports in the newspaper, but that these representations are made by this newspaper because they are deeply imbedded as a discourse in society. This is partly because this newspaper has taken on a monitorial role, requiring neutral reporting from journalists, and a dedication to surveying the processes of state institutions, like the police and courts. As a result, the ways in which crime is reported on in the newspaper is fairly well fixed, making it difficult for journalists to conceive of different ways of reporting crime. The representations of the criminal justice system that the monitorial media, this newspaper included present, are a careful balance between the interest of the public, and the need to preserve relationships with sources. The monitorial media in general, and this newspaper in particular, represent the criminal justice system. The relationship between the police and the newspaper, and the courts and the media, therefore strongly influences the way in which crime news is reported. In particular, crime news is represented from the perspective of the criminal justice system. This research was carried out using Critical Discourse Analysis, qualitative interviews, and focus group interviews.

I used a Community Psychology approach, involving Participatory Action Research with Qualitative methods, to both explore the employment interview experiences of disabled people and to effect positive change for disabled participants discriminated against in the labour market. In the opening chapters I set the action research enterprise within the socio-economic and political climate of the time. I follow this by describing the ethical, ideological, epistemological and methodological concerns that have driven my particular process of inquiry. 1 pay particular attention to the research process and reflect upon personal, social, organisational and political implications of the project. I review literature on disability, disability legislation and employment interviews and place my own work in the context of this. As well as reporting my findings on the difficulties disabled people face when seeking to enter the labour market, I describe the multiple research interventions I engaged with. These ranged from giving research participants welfare benefit advice through to consulting on the Government's Disability Discrimination Act. The main focus for the project became one of developing and marketing a Code of Practice on the recruitment and retention of disabled employees. I worked collaboratively with disabled research participants in developing and marketing this Code with four major employer organisations in order to affect change in employer staffing policies.
