Full textTechnological advances have resulted in the development of wireless sensor applications. The densely distributed sensors, generally used for data gathering, environmental monitoring, industrial automation or surveillance, involve often low data rates and low transmission ranges. Despite the progress in software and hardware technologies, the energy efficiency is still one of the important constraints for the design of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). For wireless sensor applications, nodes are usually deployed with reduced energy resources and without capability of battery replacement. Several techniques could be used to minimize the energy consumption of WSN. In this thesis we focus the physical layer and we propose to reduce the energy consumption by using low energy coding schemes. Firstly, a study allows us to deduce that in AWGN channel, Minimum-Energy Coding based on OOK modulation is energy efficiency, but at the price of lower spectrum efficiency. Only the transmission power is considered and the consumption of electronic circuits is not taken into account. Then, different energy consumption models are introduced to achieve energy efficiency analysis using realistic devices. The fact that Minimum-Energy coding based on OOK improves the energy efficiency performance is confirmed and the limits of practical circuits are highlighted. At last, the network protocol is addressed by introducing the ARQ error control protocol. Finally, the energy efficiency of an autonomous remote control is improved by using OOK orthogonal modulation and a real demonstrator is realized
Bezuidenhout, Quintus. "Satellite communications strategy selection for optimal LEO satellite communication." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71930.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: A low earth orbit satellite system can be useful in numerous communication applications where physical connections are not possible. Communication time available from any point on earth to the satellite is less than one hour per day. This one hour is fragmented into smaller time slots due to the satellite orbiting. This is not much time to transfer data and there is even less time available to transfer data when there are other external factors affecting the system. It is thus crucial to optimise the satellite communications link so that more data can be transferred per orbit. The goal of this thesis is to improve the performance of a low earth orbit satellite communication channel by varying certain parameters of the system, such as the protocol used, modulation scheme, packet size, transmission power etc. and then to observe how these parameters influence the system. The protocols that were chosen to be implemented are CSMA-CA, CSMA-CA with DSSS technology and Round-Robin Polling. A simulator for each protocol was designed with the Opnet platform, so that specific parameters could be changed and the results observed, in order to optimise the communications link between the satellite and ground stations. The results showed that there is no particular configuration of modulation scheme, packet size, transmission power etc. presenting the best overall solution for LEO satellite communications. It must be considered what the specific LEO satellite application would be used for and the characteristics required by that specific application. A suitable configuration must subsequently be chosen from the set of configurations available to satisfy most of the application requirements.

Full textThough eating disorders are a serious public health threat, misinformation about these potentially deadly diseases is widespread. This study examines eating disorder information from a wide variety of sources including medical journals, news reports, and popular social activist authors. Examples of misinformation were identified, and three aspects of eating disorders (prevalence, mortality, and etiology) were chosen as key indicators of scientific illiteracy about those illnesses. A case study approach was then adopted to trace examples of misinformation to their original sources whenever possible. A dozen examples include best-selling books, national eating disorder information clearinghouses; the news media; documentary feature films; and a PBS television Nova documentary program. The results provide an overview of the ways in which valid information becomes flawed, including poor journalism, lack of fact-checking, plagiarism, and typographical errors. Less obvious—and perhaps even more important—much of the misinformation results from scientific research being co-opted to promote specific sociopolitical agendas. These results highlight a significant gap in science communication between researchers, the medical community, and the public regarding these diseases, and recommendations to address the problem are offered.

Full textIn this thesis I focus on the introduction of Electronic Cornmunication as part of an envisaged Communication Science curriculum in the Language, Literacy and Communication Learning area of the Further Education and Training band. In the course of my thesis I will show that the requisite elements of verbal and written cornmunication are dispersed throughout the Language, Literacy and Communication learning area in the General Education and Training band, and that they can be utilised as basis for formally introducing Communication Science, as a subject in the Language, literacy and Communication learning area in the Further Education and Train¬ing band. I also show that electronic communication will form a crucial area of study in such a Communication Science curriculum. I argue that due to the diversity of cultures in South Africa, cross-cultural cornmunication is required in such a curriculum. I also argue that by the very na¬ture of Outcomes-Based Education it is necessary to have a subject into our school curriculum that will form an interface with conceptual learning and experiential learning, that will contextu-alise language study within the more comprehensive scope of forms of human communication, and that will form an interface between the humanities and science to prevent the humanities from becoming soft options in Further Education and Training band learning programmes. To this effect I focus on the crucial role of Constructivism as integrating theory to account for vari¬ous approaches to motivational learning, the primary form of learning required in Outcomes-Based Education. I examine the principles of curriculum construction in OBE and its associated culture of learn¬ing against the backdrop of the theory of Situated Cognition. This presents a platform to argue the case for Electronic Communication as part of Communication Science in the Further Edu¬cation and Training band curricula in South African schools.

In an all-to-all broadcast, every user wishes to broadcast its message to all the other users. This is a process that frequently appears in large-scale distributed systems such as voting and consensus protocols. In the classic solution, a user needs to receive n messages and n signatures where n is the number of users in the network. This is undesirable for large-scale distributed systems that contain millions or billions of users and can be the throughput bottleneck for some existing systems. In this thesis, we propose two protocols for the all-to-all broadcast problem. Our protocols upper bound the number of bits each user receives by [Theta](n log log2 n), which is a huge improvement from the conventional n times the signature size. Besides the all-to-all protocol, we also provide new results regarding random graphs and regular graphs. These results are used in our protocol to prove its efficiency. But they are interesting by themselves and have independent theoretic value.

Full textOver the years, local television news stations across the nation have seen a dramatic decrease in viewership. Much like newspapers, fewer people are relying on television news for several reasons. Two of the biggest culprits are the age of new technology and social media. These two factors alone have reprogrammed people's daily habits, changing the landscape of television news viewership and resulting in uncertain times at local television news stations. Few studies have been done on the future of local television news. Of the studies that have been conducted, it is clear to see that local news is still relevant even in times of change, uncertainty and evolution, but can it make enough of a profit to survive? The million dollar question TV executives are trying to answer is: How will local TV news stations stay afloat in these uncharted waters? In an attempt to answer this question, qualitative research in the form of ethnography and interview was conducted. The findings in this study reveal television news stations must stay on the cutting edge of technology in order to engage their viewers. They must also think of creative ways to generate revenue besides the traditional way of advertising. Without healthy news ratings, local television news organizations are forced to lower their advertising rates to those seeking to spend money on commercial time. This, in turn, has resulted in a loss of millions of dollars a year for TV stations. The end result will be evident to both stations and viewers. The future of local television news and the direct impact to viewers is discussed.
