Abstract:
Abstract Conventionally, linguistic practice, social interaction in particular, and exchange of meaning between interlocutors entails systematic recourse to word and non-word communicative resources interdependently. The intersection of the vocal and gestural structures is a justifiably predominant sociolinguistic phenomenon in interaction, in terms of the actualization of communicative acts and meaning production. Along with this focus, this paper has endeavoured to review the bulk of communication and semiotics theories in their handling of the entrenched verbal/nonverbal dichotomy, mainly: the communicative system and configuration of signs paradigmatically and syntagmatically in the overall process of social interaction.

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the major issues surrounding the concept of non-verbal communica tion is which forms of non-verbal behaviour qualify as communication. It is in this regard that this article strives to formulate some points of departure for a teaching approach to non-verbal communication. The main characteristics of the three most important perspectives relating to non-verbal communication are as sessed. By combining certain aspects of the three perspectives, omitting others and adding new perspectives, it is proposed that one can distinguish between communication, ascribed communication and non-communica tion. Communication behaviour encom passes all forms of intentional or goal directed behaviour, or behaviour for which proof exists that encoding is tak ing place and is being interpreted as such. Ascribed communication encompasses indicative behaviour upon which conclusions are based, or to which intention or meaning is ascribed. Non-communicative behaviour encom passes non-verbal behaviour which is neither goal-directed nor interpreted as such. Although this distinction should be scientifically refined even further, it may serve as a basis for a description of non-verbal communication.

Abstract:
This paper aims to define communication and incorporate differences between verbal and non-verbal communication. The special focus is given to different kinds of non-verbal skills with their color and creed. Their contribution in professional field is critically examined. As communication is an ongoing and complex process of transmission and reception of message, the implication of non-verbal communication is indispensable. When verbal and non-verbal cues are in conflict, verbal skills are virtually disregarded and the meaning and implication of ‘what’ heavily depends on non-verbal signs and symbols. The paper also highlights the different forms of vocalic and non-vocalic nonverbal cues with rational categorization. It also explores space in which culture and gender affect non-verbal communication by creating different meanings of particular item of behaviors. In this way, this paper attempts to excavate the importance of non-verbal communication in professional life.Repositioning Vol.1(1) 2016: 91-98

Abstract:
The purpose of this reseach is to explore, and categorize verbal and non verbal communication behavior in the performances of street children and beggars in Makassar. This study explored the operational actions and motivations of street children and beggars who work the streets. This study uses a qualitative method that seeks to interpret the meaning of data to understand a community's social life. The ethnographic approach to communication studies focuses on studying the interactions and activities of individuals as social creatures in using verbal and non-verbal symbols. Primary data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews with 21 street children informants and beggars operating in three sectors, namely, the Panakukang/ Fly Over/Red Light Sector, the Losari Beach Platform Sector, and the Hertasning Sector. Non-participant observation by repeatedly observing themselves both verbally and non-verbally in performing actions and actions in front of benefactors. This study found verbal and non verbal communication behaviors that are displayed as a form of impression management on the front stage in attracting the sympathies of benefactors. Verbal communication behavior in the form of spoken and written language based on categorical finding verbal symbols of street children and beggars using three elements, namely the structure of the message, the style of the message, and the attractiveness of the message. Furthermore, the categorization of non-verbal communication behaviors is facial expressions, body movements (kinetic), physical appearance (body and manner of dress), and paralinguistic(vocalic).

Abstract:
Previous research has shown deficits in vocal emotion recognition in sub-populations of individuals with hearing loss, making this a high priority research topic. However, previous research has only examined vocal emotion recognition using verbal material, in which emotions are expressed through emotional prosody. There is evidence that older individuals with hearing loss suffer from deficits in general prosody recognition, not specific to emotional prosody. No study has examined the recognition of non-verbal vocalization, which constitutes another important source for the vocal communication of emotions. It might be the case that individuals with hearing loss have specific difficulties in recognizing emotions expressed through prosody in speech, but not non-verbal vocalizations. We aim to examine whether vocal emotion recognition difficulties in middle- aged-to older individuals with sensorineural mild-moderate hearing loss are better explained by deficits in vocal emotion recognition specifically, or deficits in prosody recognition generally by including both sentences and non-verbal expressions. Furthermore a, some of the studies which have concluded that individuals with mild-moderate hearing loss have deficits in vocal emotion recognition ability have also found that the use of hearing aids does not improve recognition accuracy in this group. We aim to examine the effects of linear amplification and audibility on the recognition of different emotions expressed both verbally and non-verbally. Besides examining accuracy for different emotions we will also look at patterns of confusion (which specific emotions are mistaken for other specific emotion and at which rates) during both amplified and non-amplified listening, and we will analyze all material acoustically and relate the acoustic content to performance. Together these analyses will provide clues to effects of amplification on the perception of different emotions. For these purposes, a total of 70 middle-aged-older individuals, half with mild-moderate hearing loss and half with normal hearing will perform a computerized forced-choice vocal emotion recognition task with and without amplification.

Aim. The purpose of this study is: (a) to examine how swimming coaches perceive their communication skills and preferences; (b) to better understand the behaviour of coach-athlete communication during practice sessions; (c) to explore similarities and differences between coaches’ declared and actual communication behaviour. Basic procedures. To accomplish this purpose, 10 swimming coaches (6 males, 4 females; mage=31 years) were invited to take part in the two-part study. First, the participants were asked to answer 6 questions about their communicational behaviours towards children during typical swimming practices. Then, during a real swimming session, both verbal and non-verbal communication was recorded (content of the message, recipient of the message, body posture, gestures, proxemics, vocal aspects). Results. The obtained results show that the coaches used six of communication behaviours. The results revealed a discrepancy between the coaches’ declared and observed communication preferences. The data analysis shows that the coaches provided both feedback (40.7%) and feedforward (59. 3%) information. In the research, it is shown that swimming teachers used non-verbal messages more often (63%) than verbal ones. Conclusions. In the teaching process, it is important that the trainer/coach provides not only information regarding the tasks to be performed but also information improving the atmosphere and also the quality of the exercises performed.

Abstract:
The article deals with the thorough description of main directions of modern kinesic research in the paralinguistic aspect. Particular attention is paid to the term "paralinguistics", which studies communicatively meaningful nonverbal components and "kinesics," in which they consider the language of the body in a broad sense. It is defined which terms are used to denote non-verbal units. It is established that gestures can be considered as an auxiliary functional component. Gestures are necessary in cases where it is impossible to verbalize (for example, because of the language barrier and hearing problems). In addition, gestures are often used when verbal statements are considered socially inappropriate. It was analyzed which 6 main functions perform gestures. It was found out that the noncommunicational human systems of the person are subordinate, secondary systems. It is noted that non-verbal components are inherent in their regularities in the formation of the expression and transmission of information. The main directions of modern kinetic researches are indicated. Three large kinetic groups are considered: prequenics, microkinesics, macroconesisics. Nonverbal components are inherent in their regularities in the formation of the expression and transmission of information, which are now becoming the subject of research on the theory of communication.Principal methodological issues that cover the study of all types of kinesics (from gestures to pantomime), phonation (from speech to vocal art), proxemic (posture, position of communications), as well as communication with the participation of so-called situational text will create the opportunity to prevent communicative failures in the process of communication of representatives of different ethnic cultures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the main psychometric properties of the CDR, a new parent report instrument for the early screening of communication and language development of Greek-speaking children. Based on a representative sample of 1391 children aged 7 to 30 months (M= 19.45, SD= 6.91), results are presented on the sensitivity, internalconsistency, and convergent and divergent validity of its two major scales (‘Preverbal behaviors’ and ‘Verbal behaviors’) and their respective subscales (vocal and non-vocal preverbal communication, language comprehension, productive vocabulary, morphology and syntax). Results also illustrate the developmental patterns of the dimensions of communicative/linguistic development assessed, as well as the high and significant correlations among these dimensions of (pre)linguistic knowledge. Overall, results provide evidence on the functionality, validity and reliability of the CDR, and point to its use as a tool for the early screening of communication development in Greek-speaking children for clinical, educational and research purposes.

Abstract:
In human-human communication we use verbal, vocal and non-verbal signals to communicate with others. Facial expressions are a form of non-verbal communication, recognizing them helps to improve the human-machine interaction. This paper proposes a system for pose- and illumination-invariant recognition of facial expressions using near-infrared camera images and precise 3D shape registration. Precise 3D shape information of the human face can be computed by means of Constrained Local Models (CLM), which fits a dense model to an unseen image in an iterative manner. We used a multi-class SVM to classify the acquired 3D shape into different emotion categories. Results surpassed human performance and show poseinvariant performance. Varying lighting conditions can influence the fitting process and reduce the recognition precision. We built a near-infrared and visible light camera array to test the method with different illuminations. Results shows that the near-infrared camera configuration is suitable for robust and reliable facial expression recognition with changing lighting conditions.

Abstract:
Successful communication in background noise is a continuous interaction between conversation partners. They continuously exchange conscious, unconscious, verbal, and non-verbal information regarding how well the other person is understood. Human communication is not limited to one-on-one interactions but can also happen in group conversation situations. The complexity of taking an active part in a group conversation is much higher though, since the continuous interaction happens with more than one conversation partner at the same time. To investigate human communication behavior, real conversations between groups of six people were observed in the Sonova Real Life Lab. All participants were allowed to move around freely within the lab space. The head position and orientation of all six participants was continuously monitored with an optical motion capturing system. The voices of all participants were recorded with wireless headset microphones, which allowed to assess individual vocal effort. During the conversation situation, background noise was played from all four directions simultaneously and systematically varied in overall level. The individual position data and vocal effort were used to estimate perceived communication difficulty and signal to noise ratios. The head orientation data was analyzed to estimate which individuals the participants were talking and listening to.

Abstract:
Non verbal communication as a tool for inclusion and integration: results of a questionnaire Immigration represents a challenge for integration at local and international levels and for this reason, in recent years, there has been an increase in interventions aimed at facilitating the process of integration of third-country nationals. Particular attention is paid to linguistic, cultural and social issues. In general, however, there is a lack of reflection on the importance of non-verbal language in intercultural communication and how this adds a crucial key of interpretation to the message that is being conveyed: the lack of attention to the non-verbal can result in episodes of social exclusion and stereotyping that can have decisive consequences for the integration of the individual into society. On the other hand, it is believed that a greater awareness of the differences in non-verbal language between cultures could promote understanding and acceptance of diversity, improve personal and professional relationships with migrants and facilitate their integration into society. This article presents the results of a questionnaire created and distributed within the framework of the Programma Nazionale del Fondo Asilo, Migrazione e Integrazione (National Program of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund) (FAMI) and is aimed at understanding the degree of awareness of non-verbal language among social workers in contact with migrants from different geographical, social and religious backgrounds, in order to collect data useful to develop a project that includes the dynamics of non-verbal language in the training of professionals working in the field of integration and inclusion of migrants.

Abstract:
A comprehensive view of speech communication requires a consideration of dynamic characteristics in language users’ multimodal behaviors. This talk discusses dynamic properties of both verbal and non-verbal communication behaviors, focusing on variability in voice, speech, and co-speech gesture production. I present a series of experiments that leverage quantitative approaches to examine how the multimodal production units of the cognitive system vary in their dynamic control and realization in executing communication goals. The overarching hypothesis is that surface variations in multimodal behaviors are structured to reflect communicative intentions, exhibiting a tight relation between the linguistic system and recruited modalities. Supporting evidence emerges from two types of data: dynamic voice signals drawn from speech corpora of various speakers, speaking styles, and languages, and time-aligned multidimensional signals of speech and co-speech gestures (simultaneously recorded audio, kinematic, and visual signals). Voice variations are acoustically structured by both biologically relevant factors and factors that vary with language-specific phonology. Furthermore, the spatiotemporal patterning of vocal tract actions and cooccurring body movements systematically varies, reflecting the prosodic structure of language. The findings and the utility of the analytical tools employed in these studies have implications for comparative investigations of communicative behaviors in animals. [Work supported by the NSF.]

Abstract:
Fides Krucker is a singer of contemporary opera who specializes in extended vocal sound. For three decades, her passion has been interdisciplinary co-creation. Extended, or ‘expanded,’ voice is an effective mode of expression and communication. It can marry with theatrical forms in multiple ways. This article dips into (1) the work of the music-driven feminist collective URGE, (2) Krucker’s history in electroacoustic opera, (3) ‘vocalography’ for choreographer Jessica Runge, and (4) devised theatre at Humber College Theatre Performance. There is practicality, purpose, and economy to non-verbals—from groan, growl, and sigh through to scream, squeal, and shriek. This palette becomes the rough material for aesthetic shaping, and the sounds—often taboo and definitely stimulating—are emotion turned inside out. They affect the listener in biologically direct ways that are surprisingly spiritual. It requires training to develop a body of performers willing and able to go to these ‘improper’ vocal places. It takes an imagination that loves and understands these sounds to create compositions based on their loamy soil. This terrain is a fertile meeting ground for theatrical impulse to marry with the structural values of musical composition: dynamics, timbre, layering, motifs, range. Physical and devised theatre are a part of the Canadian performance landscape. Could vocally driven theatre create a robust avant-garde aesthetic capable of going beyond shouting to express the urgency of our times?
