Abstract:
This chapter offers a critical overview of the emergence of different strands of historical enquiry into political communication, a term of art rarely used in Britain until the 1960s and only taken seriously by historians from the 1980s. The chapter pays particular attention to the history of political communication in the era of mass democracy and the mass media and focuses on the relationship between the British left and the media as a lens onto wider developments. The final section examines how, particularly after the election victory of New Labour in 1997, a new generation of historians has explored the phenmenon of mediated political communication and its intersections with areas of popular culture with increasing sophistication.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 explores the ways in which communication determined the outcome of battles in classical Greece—encounters where an army’s victory would depend upon its continued cohesion and its soldiers’ ability to remain in effective communication with one another. Neither Thucydides nor Xenophon (our principal sources for the battles in question) draws specific attention to these two vital needs, let alone their synergy, but Naiden demonstrates how readily identifiable they are. He draws a distinction between networks of “horizontal” communication among an army’s mass of soldiers on the one hand, and officers’ top-down “vertical” communication on the other, the latter form conveyed by symbolic gestures as well as by verbal instruction.

Abstract:
Why Write? is the result of collaborative work from members of the Academic and Technical Writing Program, the Centre for Academic Communication, the Libraries at University of Victoria. The goal for the textbook is to provide a thoroughly Canadian resource for Academic Writing at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The approach we take in this interactive resource is that academic writing is fundamental to understanding how language operates as a means to understand ourselves, our worlds and each other. Academic writing is the conduit through which we solve problems, test ideas, and make change.
