Abstract:

Communication, conceived as an intersubjective phenomenon, woven in the intersections of common and shared psychic spaces, proves to be fundamental for the construction of the psyche. As a notion, the centrality of communication has been undeniable in psychoanalytic theory and technique since its beginnings. In this work, we sought to investigate the origins of the concept of communication in psychoanalytic theory, arguing that it is a notion supported by the paradigm of intersubjectivity. This thesis is structured in four axes and presented in four articles. In the first axis, it is proposed to explain the Freudian trajectory around the notion of communication, from its proposals more focused on the construction of a psychic apparatus model to considerations that provide the basis for the beginnings of a theory of intersubjectivity. In the second, the notion of communication for D. Winnicott is discussed, considering his proposals referring to the theory of intersubjectivity, especially from the mother-baby relationship. In the third one, S. Ferenczi s contributions on communication in an intersubjective perspective based on the concept of affective tuning were explained and discussed. In the fourth, it was tried to evidence the bases of the communication in the family from the concepts of group and familiar psychic apparatus, both constituted intersubjectively. From this path, it is evident that the notion of communication, from the psychoanalytic point of view, is constructed and sustained in the intersubjectivity.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Machine type communications is seen as a form of data communication, among devices and/or from devices to a set of servers, that do not necessarily require human interaction. However, it is challenging to accommodate MTC in LTE as a result of its specific characteristics and requirements. The aim of this thesis is to propose mechanisms and optimize the access layer techniques for MTC in LTE. For uplink access, we propose two methods to improve the performance of random access in terms of latency: a packet aggregation method and a Transmission Time Interval bundling scheme. To further reduce the uplink latency and enable massive number of connected device, we propose a new contention based access method (CBA) to bypass both the redundant signaling in the random access procedure and also the latency of regular scheduling. For downlink reception, we propose two methods to analyze the performance of discontinuous reception DRX mode for MTC applications: the first with the Poisson distribution and the second with the Pareto distribution for sporadic traffic. With the proposed models, the power saving factor and wake up latency can be accurately estimated for a given choice of DRX parameters, thus allowing to select the ones presenting the optimal tradeoff

Abstract:
Context Interactive GPGPU applications requires low response time feedback from events such as user input in order to provide a positive user experience. Communication of these events must be performed asynchronously as to not cause significant performance penalties. Objectives In this study the usage of CPU/GPU shared virtual memory to perform asynchronous communication is explored. Previous studies have shown that shared virtual memory can increase computational performance compared to other types of memory. Methods A communication technique that aimed to utilize the performance increasing properties of shared virtual memory was developed and implemented. The implemented technique was then compared to an implementation using explicitly transferred memory in an experiment measuring the performance of the various stages involved in the technique. Results The results from the experiment revealed that utilizing shared virtual memory for performing asynchronous communication was in general slightly slower than- or comparable to using explicitly transferred memory. In some cases, where the memory access pattern was right, utilization of shared virtual memory lead to a 50% reduction in execution time compared to explicitly transferred memory. Conclusions A conclusion that shared virtual memory can be utilized for performing asynchronous communication was reached. It was also concluded that by utilizing shared virtual memory a performance increase can be achieved over explicitly transferred memory. In addition it was concluded that careful consideration of data size and access pattern is required to utilize the performance increasing properties of shared virtual memory.

Abstract:
The thesis expounds the following theoretical and espistemological options : - at the moment, a technical culture with its notions, values and methode is setting itself up; it tends to substitute itself to another culture - called here "humanistic" - which was prevailing until now. -the juxtaposition of the two cultural fields is particulary sensible in the domains linked with communication. The latter notion is presently a compulsory passing place for the two cultures. The thesis then centers on the evolution in the pedagogical conceptions of the lecturers in "expression techniques" in the french "polytechnics" (i. U. T. ) since 1969. This evolution points out to a gradual shift from one field of reference to another. The analysis rests on a sorting of the words used by the aforementioned lecturers in the pedagogical journal "expression". The sorting has been carried out with two different methods : the former is subjective and qualitative, the latter quantitative (the words have been counted and sorted thanks to the use of a software specifically modified for carrying out the research). The two methods intersect and confirm the presuppositions : there is an evolution in discourses from a humanistic culture to a technical culture

The economic situation of industrial enterprises is characterised by simultaneous changes of the markets: sales-, purchase-, finance- and personnel market. For this reason measures have been proposed since the eighties and increasingly so today (e. G. CIM, lean-production, simultaneous engineering), taking into account these changes. These measures bring communication more and more into the focus. The target of this work is it to determine the influence of communication on professional qualification requirements for personnel of industrial enterprises. This investigation is made using as example the mechanical engineering industry, taking into the consideration the simultaneous engineering working method during the product development

Abstract:
In order to reach sustainability, a greater capacity to facilitate the implementation of the principles on which sustainability is founded is required. Effective methods of communicating sustainability will be necessary. Although there is a notable range of successful methods, opportunities to expand that range always remain and are worthy of exploration. This study pursues capacity building by testing a communication method variation that uses questions, audience participation, and metaphors intended to make the subject matter more easily understood and more permanently retained. An initial trial of the method was attempted with several groups of senior secondary students who were introduced to the ideas of sustainability during group and individual sessions. The students were surveyed before, during and after the sessions to measure their understanding and acceptance of sustainability concepts and principles. Of the students surveyed, all showed greater knowledge after instructional sessions using this technique. Results suggest that using a consciously dynamic and adaptive approach to choice of metaphors and questions can make the subject of sustainability easier to understand and remember.

Rahman, Zarina. "Thabo Mbeki : State of the Nation Addresses - an analysis of his rhetorical technique." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/9001.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 87-95).
The dissertation analyses the rhetorical style of Thabo Mbeki with the aim of evaluating whether his oratory was effective enough to convince his audience to support him. It does this by analysing four of the eleven annual addresses that he delivered at the occasion of the Opening of Parliament during his period in office. Mbeki held the position of President of South Africa from June 1999 to September 2008. The speeches that were chosen for analysis from this period are 1999, 2003, 2006 and 2008. The motivation for these choices is related to critical periods during the Mbeki presidency. Before analysing the speeches, the paper examines the context in detail by briefly outlining Mbeki's political and personal background in order to understand his identity in relation to his rhetoric. The current form of annual address at the opening of Parliament is placed in its historical context It also places the type of speech in context in terms of parliamentary rules and the South African Constitution and does a brief comparison with similar addresses in the United States of America and Britain. A key aspect of the dissertation is to attempt to identify how he possibly failed to gain the support his audience by missing the opportunities that his annual address to Parliament presented. In order to identity the disjuncture between the style and content of the oration and the audience. the dissertation examines the understanding of audience and speculates about the real and perceived audiences in the case of Mbeki's annual addresses. The annual address to Parliament provided Mbeki with an opportunity to speak to the nation. directly through the various forms of media as well as through the members of Parliament that were present at the addresses. The dissertation concludes that, on the basis of the in-depth rhetorical analyses of the speeches and the perception of the audience. Mbeki's form of oration resulted in him appearing distant and aloof to his audience. Mbeki used Eurocentric language and metaphors that the audience was not able to identify with thereby failing to unite the audience in support for him. He failed to use presidential rhetoric to his advantage in his speeches in Parliament but further failed to bolster the rhetorical presidency by not establishing his ethos with the people whose support he depended on in order to secure his position in office. By maintaining a strong adherence to the British notion of a president-in-parliament, he remained aloof and wasted the opportunity that the office of the President provided. While his policies may have been sound. he was not able to convince his audience of this causing him ultimately to fail.

Full text
Abstract:
Cooperative communication has been considered a promising technique used in wireless network to introduce diversity. Based on distributed architecture, cooperative network enables single-antenna users to share their information as a virtual multiple antenna array, which makes it possible to enhance the user data rates and obtain the diversity gain. Depending on the ways users share and process the information, practical user cooperation is mainly grouped in three modes: Amplify and Forward (AF), Decode and Forward (DF) and Compress and Forward (CF). Generally, DF outperforms AF in most practical implementation and is alternately the best by theoretical analysis. In particular, it is shown in theory that DF outperforms CF when the inter-user link is in good condition and vice versa. Considered as a capacity achieving approach, superposition encoding technique produces approximate Gaussian output signals. It is the power and spectral efficiency of the encoding scheme that make it useful for several wireless communication systems such as MIMO system, relay channels, and so on. The main goal of the thesis is to study how much superposition coding can help when applied to DF user cooperation. In particular, a new DF scheme with soft information relaying technique is proposed to overcome the performance degradation happening when the quality of the inter-user channel is bad. Based on the scheme, soft log-likelihood ratio (LLR) of the relay decoder is quantized, encoded, modulated by superimposition and then forwarded to the destination. The destination receiver employs an iterative superposition decoder and modified maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoder to recover the transmitted signal from the source. The performance of the scheme is evaluated by simulation. We show that the new scheme can significantly outperform the conventional DF scheme even in a poor inter-user channel. Furthermore, a new cooperative transmission strategy based on superposition and multiuser detection techniques is also investigated in the thesis. The new scheme is an improved DF scheme in which the two users take turns in being the relay for each other and the signal forwarded by each user is the superimposed data of both users. Here, interleavers are introduced in the superposition process as an efficient user separation tool, providing a large improvement in error performance and also facilitating the decoding process at the destination. Different types of iterative receivers are examined. The performance of the scheme is evaluated by simulation. It is shown that the new transmission scheme outperforms the conventional one in terms of both spectral and power efficiency.

The studies of the different books and articles on the non verbal communication has shown 11 fields of investigation: reactive, intensive, physiologist, perceptive, bipolar, classifier, associative, expressive, relational and statutary. The study of gestures in communication has presented some only one or two gestures analysed by authors, very few quantitative analysis and contradiction in the interpretation of gestures. The study of fields of investigation has proved the importance of such variables as gender, situation or dyads. The research conducted by the authors on these variables has permitted to define 21 hypothesis associated to these explicative variables. The explained variables represent some gestures or non verbal expessions ( hands, legs, attitudes, eyes, tone of voice, clothes, facial expression ). The experiment covers 382 sales calls of an average 11 minutes. These 382 sales calls are broken into 304 calls by average salesmen, 39 sales calls of + bad ; or non effective salesmen and 39 calls made by good or effective salesmen. The research considers 1205 gestures. The results prove that sales activity varies with competences or sales skills: does an effective salesman use more gestures than a non effective salesman and why ? these analysis are followed by different statistical studies showing, for example, the influence of gender on hands gestures: does a woman move more than a man and if yes, why? then, we examined the associations between the variables (does a person move his legs in non threatening or calm situation or in times of in stress?) this research will help us better understand the gestures of salesmen in various sales situations

Abstract:
Learning to speak a foreign language (L2) can be a challenging feat, made all the more challenging when done in only 50 minute, daily increments in class. Oral asynchronous computer-mediated communication (ACMC) provides learners with opportunities to practice spoken communication and evaluate their practice outside the classroom. In this dissertation, I explore methods for classroom integration of oral ACMC, linguistic traits developed in previous oral ACMC studies, methods for determining the effectiveness of oral ACMC, learner beliefs about the effectiveness of oral ACMC activities, and the effects of learners' deliberate practice in a series of oral ACMC activities on 3 measures of L2 fluency. In my first article, a literature review, I found that most studies on this topic focus on the linguistic traits of accuracy, fluency, and pronunciation, and determine L2 growth from oral ACMC activities through learner perceptions of L2 growth not relying on objective measures. In my second article, I analyzed the fluency change of learners who participated in a series of video recording and feedback activities. I found that, although there were few significant results, the activities may be of some benefit to learners in improving their spoken fluency. I also found that structural equational modelling may be of more value for researching classroom-based activities than t tests and regression models. In my third article, I investigated the experiences of several learners who participated in the video recording activities described in article two. Based on these learner experiences, I provided key considerations for designing asynchronous video recording assignments. The three articles included in this dissertation will be valuable in highlighting key factors related to the design, development, research, and effective use of oral ACMC activities in foreign language classrooms.

Abstract:
AFor few decades, product design process became a prior factor for enterprises. Their organizations have to be more efficient to enhance product cost, time to market and quality. Traditional seqential engineering is no more efficient, then principles of concurrent engineering appears to fit perfectly with the competitive context in industry. Concurrently, extended enterprises raised with economic globalization. In this context, development of Information Technologies exploded to support the needs of such organizations and methodologies

Scientific, technical and medical publishing are subject to the increasing dominance of the industries of mass culture and information. Their power alters the conditions required for publishing to operate in an independent manner and jeopardises its role in scientific communication. Scientific, technical and medical books only play a secondary role as a medium of scientific communication. But, they retain a certain legitimacy in that they are determined by the constraints of scientific endeavour. They are subject to the logic of supply, the logic of science but above all the logic of demand, a mercantile force that tends to prevail. As a result, scientific publishing is less and less an instrument for communicating and promoting science. Publishers are subject to production requirements that are specific to the world of science, which imposes its own standards and endorsement processes. They make only a slight contribution to the organization of publishing as a whole and the control they exercise is increasingly commercial in nature. The acceleration of the industrial process, caused in particular by the development of new technology, does not appear to contribute any additional energy to the sector, which is particularly influenced by the logic of the information industries, proposing increasingly customized services based on upstream control of information flows. The transformation of the sector must also be seen in the context of changes in the world of scientific communication, where technical media and market forces play an increasingly important role

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis was the verification and the implementation of a multiple retransmission technique for the one-way asynchronous communication channel of the Interactive Video Data Service (IVDS) system. The commercial application of the IVDS project made reliability of the retransmission technique important. Verification of the reliability of the technique was done using a simulator written in the C programming language. The results of the IVDS simulator were compared to the existing statistical model of the transmission channel. Following a favorable comparison of the statistical model and simulator results, a prototype of the control section for the IVDS Consumer Control Unit (CCU) was designed and constructed. This was an important step towards the completion of the IVDS system. The CCU design defined protocols for message format and error detection and also helped to establish an IVDS test-bed system.

Distributed wireless sensor networks (DWSNs) are applied in a variety of applications that can enhance the quality of human life or even save lives, such as in fire monitoring, where DWSN microsensors relay the exact location of the fire to water sprinkler actors to automatically extinguish the fire. Batteries are currently the predominant source of energy in DWSNs. one of the key obstacles in the adoption of DWSN technology is the limited lifetime of batteries in microsensors. Recharging or replacing depleted batteries can significantly increase costs in DWSNs. The aim of this study is to address the power challenge in DWSNs by proposing a sixteen-element equiangular spiral rectenna to ahrvest ambient microwave energy to supply indoor DWSNs. The study concludes that this rectenna model has the potential to generate power that enables long periods of operation of the DWSNs without human intervention in the power manageement process, thus reducing maintenance and administration costs. The efficiency of the rectenna model was tested in an anechoic chamber. Efficiency test results indicated that the highest efficiency of 2% for the rectenna model was achieved as 2 GHz for an ambient power of -6 dBm across a 1 K ohm load resistence. The study further concludes that the current rectenna model size of sixteen elements is a limiting factor for the deployment of DWSNs.

Technology, communication and information are fudamentals in the functionning of societies. In western countries, technology, science and their final comination have attained very elaborated and efficient developments. Both technology and science relied on specialized communication and information systems (particularly documentary systems) whch in turn benefited from the scientific and technical improvements they contributed in. This gave the european countries the means of a very important economic growth 1and of a general comination over the other regions in the world. Colonization was one of the ways this domination was exerted, and it now assumes the general shape of economic and cultural globalization. During colonization, it was agreed that administration, economic production, research and documentary systems should be implemented in africa more or less under the general shape they had taken in europe. These practives did not give real consideration to the different social, cultural, ideological, economical and communicational previous practices(including languages, types of know-how and know-why communication systemes, orality, etc) this tentative duplication has been a global failure. It cannot be a surprise, since real use, creation and synthesis of technical and scientific information, as a sociological and psychological phenomenon can only take place in accordance with the genune cultural and communicational functionning of societies, as happened in europe. Elsherif, Mohamed Asaad. "Mapping multiplexing technique (MMT) : a novel intensity modulated transmission format for high-speed optical communication systems." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33413/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a huge rapid growth in the deployment of data centers, mainly driven from the increasing demand of internet services as video streaming, e-commerce, Internet Of Things (IOT), social media, and cloud computing. This led data centers to experience an expeditious increase in the amount of network traffic that they have to sustain due to requirement of scaling with the processing speed of Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology. On the other side, as more and more data centers and processing cores are on demand, as the power consumption is becoming a challenging issue. Unless novel power efficient methodologies are innovated, the information technology industry will be more liable to a future power crunch. As such, low complex novel transmission formats featuring both power efficiency and low cost are considered the major characteristics enabling large-scale, high performance data transmission environment for short-haul optical interconnects and metropolitan range data networks. In this thesis, a novel high-speed Intensity-Modulated Direct-Detection (IM/DD) transmission format named “Mapping Multiplexing Technique (MMT)” for high-speed optical fiber networks, is proposed and presented. Conceptually, MMT design challenges the high power consumption issue that exists in high-speed short and medium range networks. The proposed novel scheme provides low complex means for increasing the power efficiency of optical transceivers at an impactful tradeoff between power efficiency, spectral efficiency, and cost. The novel scheme has been registered as a patent (Malaysia PI2012700631) that can be employed for applications related but not limited to, short-haul optical interconnects in data centers and Metropolitan Area networks (MAN). A comprehensive mathematical model for N-channel MMT modulation format has been developed. In addition, a signal space model for the N-channel MMT has been presented to serve as a platform for comparison with other transmission formats under optical channel constraints. Especially, comparison with M-PAM, as meanwhile are of practical interest to expand the capacity for optical interconnects deployment which has been recently standardized for Ethernet IEEE 802.3bs 100Gb/s and in today ongoing investigation activities by IEEE 802.3 400Gb/s Ethernet Task Force. Performance metrics have been considered by the derivation of the average electrical and optical power for N-channel MMT symbols in comparison with Pulse Amplitude Modulation (M-PAM) format with respect to the information capacity. Asymptotic power efficiency evaluation in multi-dimensional signal space has been considered. For information capacity of 2, 3 and 4 bits/symbol, 2-channel, 3-channel and 4-channel MMT modulation formats can reduce the power penalty by 1.76 dB, 2.2 dB and 4 dB compared with 4-PAM, 8-PAM and 16-PAM, respectively. This enhancement is equivalent to 53%, 60% and 71% energy per bit reduction to the transmission of 2, 3 and 4 bits per symbol employing 2-, 3- and 4-channel MMT compared with 4-, 8- and 16-PAM format, respectively. One of the major dependable parameters that affect the immunity of a modulation format to fiber non-linearities, is the system baud rate. The propagation of pulses in fiber with bitrates in the order > 10G, is not only limited by the linear fiber impairments, however, it has strong proportionality with fiber intra-channel non-linearities (Self Phase Modulation (SPM), Intra-channel Cross-Phase Modulation (IXPM) and Intra-channel Four-Wave Mixing (IFWM)). Hence, in addition to the potential application of MMT in short-haul networks, the thesis validates the practicality of implementing N-channel MMT system accompanied by dispersion compensation methodologies to extend the reach of error free transmission (BER ≤ 10-12) for Metro-networks. N-Channel MMT has been validated by real environment simulation results to outperform the performance of M-PAM in tolerating fiber non-linearities. By the employment of pre-post compensation to tolerate both residual chromatic dispersion and non-linearity, performance above the error free transmission limit at 40Gb/s bit rate have been attained for 2-, 3- and 4-channel MMT over spans lengths of up to 1200Km, 320 Km and 320 Km, respectively. While, at an aggregated bit rate of 100 Gb/s, error free transmission can be achieved for 2-, 3- and 4-channel MMT over spans lengths of up to 480 Km, 80 Km and 160 Km, respectively. At the same spectral efficiency, 4-channel MMT has realized a single channel maximum error free transmission over span lengths up to 320 Km and 160 Km at 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s, respectively, in contrast with 4-PAM attaining 240 Km and 80 Km at 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s, respectively.

Abstract:
The Ultra Wide Band technology is a radio modulation technique based on the transmission of very short pulses transmission (carrier less). This technique allows robust transmission in severe multi-paths channel environments, with high rate data flow and good resolution. It offers a good and single opportunity for simultaneous functionality of localisation and communication. The current technologies for transmission and localization don’t ensure a good precision of localization, neither communication with medium flow rate and long range. Our objective is to explore a technique based on new waveforms of Modified Gegenbauer Functions (MGF) waveforms for applications to obstacle detection (radar), localisation (in the zones non covered by the GPS) and communication for guided transports. The multiple access multi-bands Ultra Wide Band system should moreover exploit optimally the spectral masks UWB imposed by FCC and ETSI

Abstract:
For decades, unresolved conflicts have negatively influenced the general public through increased violence, overwhelming the judicial system. A literature review suggested that between 15% and 20% of conflicts result in an impasse. This study was designed to understand how the implementation and application of the transformative meditation technique (TMT) is used to resolve conflicts. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the interpretation and implementation of TMT. This qualitative case study was grounded in the conceptual framework of interest-based negotiation (IBN) principles. The research questions focused on mediators' perceptions, interpretations, and depth of knowledge, as well as the effectiveness of the transformative mediation technique (TMT) as an improvement over evaluative or facilitative techniques in resolving conflicts and reducing impasses. Twenty face-to-face interviews were conducted with purposefully selected mediators. Data were coded and analyzed to identify recurring themes: interests, needs, responsibility, relationship, empowerment, problem solving, and negotiation. The findings of the data analysis revealed that mediators were familiar with TMT; interpretation and implementation varied with mediator style. Moreover, most mediators were not highly educated in TMT. In addition, it was found that simply having knowledge of TMT did not prepare mediators to apply the technique appropriately. Mediators were more attracted to the hybrid transformative mediation technique (HTMT). This study has the potential to create positive social change by reducing the number of litigations, giving relief to the overburdened justice system, and thus decreasing the use of limited courts resources.

Abstract:
This research carried out on a corpus which gathers eleven Arab countries, aims at raising problems related to the rupture and continuity within the Arabic terminology of Internet, terminology created in the Anglophone world, more precisely in the United States. The terms “rupture” and “continuity” show a real conflict between two different linguistic systems: the Arabic language system which we call “indigenous system” and the English language system which we call “foreign system”. The image which takes shape is that of two systems playing chess. At the beginning of the game, the knights of the two sides are mobilized quickly. Those of the “foreign system” try to impose elements which we call “elements of rupture”. The latter appear through the linguistic loan phenomenon with its two forms: the integral loan and the acronyms. In response to these “elements of rupture”, the “indigenous system” mobilizes first of all its two knights, i.e. its two morpho-syntactic means: the subsystem of nomination and the subsystem of communication. Then, in order not to collapse, the “indigenous system” fortifies its position using two other processes: the semantic process which is the metaphor and the discursive process which is the rewording. In this study, we are not aiming at saying which of the two systems won. Indeed, within a period of ten years, we followed the evolution of the Arabic terminology of Internet in order to draw conclusions, and more exactly to draw a general tendency in light of changes that this terminology has known, changes which are certainly not final

Abstract:
During the 20th century, a significant portion of the field of public health has evolved to focus on the impact of lifestyle on health and chronic disease, and survey research is considered a staple to both public health practice and research. Because of the costs associated with non-response and nonparticipation, it is important to consider strategies and techniques that maximize participants. This dissertation examines this area of compliance by studying the impact of the foot-in-the-door technique (FITD) (Freedman & Fraser, 1966) in two studies utilizing health related survey measures. The FITD technique is tested in two applied settings to determine effectiveness. The project is unique in that the project uses test of multiple targets at once, and multiple critical requests. Independent variables include size of critical request, exposure to multiple critical requests over time, psychological reactance, preference for consistency, and demographic variables. Results show that the FITD is effective when used to recruit multiple individuals at once, and with multiple critical questionnaires. In addition, the size of critical questionnaire is inversely related to participation, for both treatment and control subjects. Finally, although the FITD was not supported as effective when compared with a control group over time, it was significantly more effective than a 'standard treatment' that did not use a 'short' FITD questionnaire, but rather used standard length questionnaires over time. Psychological reactance and preference for consistency did not impact compliance with critical requests. In addition, demographic variables did not impact completion of critical requests questionnaires.
