Abstract:
This thesis proposes and studies a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for networks of tags deployed over an industrial machine using THz communications. Despite the great advantages of these frequencies, there are drawbacks that cannot be ignored, such as propagation delays that, even at small distances, are of the same order of magnitude as packet transmission times. For this reason, the mathematical models developed for Contention-Free and Contention-Based protocols take into account the propagation delay. The main focus of this thesis is on the CSMA/CA protocol, which introduces channel sensing to reduce collisions and increase performance. The performance of the protocol are compared with two benchmarks, based on Polling and Aloha, considering an industrial machine scenario and accounting for physical and MAC layers features.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2002.
Some ill. folded.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 75).
In the area of normal language, there is a ground language that makes abstract language possible. Likewise, the hypothesis in this project is that there are two systems of language in architecture. The language that has been employed in architecture most commonly has been abstract and undecipherable. It is one-way communication: information flows from architects to architecture, but not to users. However, if the notion of language is considered as a communicative tool, likewise architectural languages should embody two-way communication. But because in architecture there is no verbal equivalent of a ground language that makes abstract meaning possible, the language of my project must be visual and intuitive. I believe this direct visual language is the ground language in architecture. By visualizing the mechanisms of architecture, users would know what architecture is saying and might have opportunities to talk about it and actively participate in it. In this research, the mechanism of architecture to be communicated is the event taking place within the library itself: namely, it's own transition from the real to the virtual. A series of diagrams were generated at the beginning of project to understand library programs ever-changing along the development of technology. The overall process of this project consists of dominant two stages. The first stage is about hardware of building: structure, and the second stage is about software: SpaceModulator. At the fist stage, several building configurations were examined to maximize the impact of the visualization. The idea of flexibility was introduced to respond to the current issue of the library's "changing medium". At the second stage, SpatialModulators that control the overall architectural quality were generated. These include furniture and adjustable walls. These discreet objects are meant to reflect the over-arching ideas of the thesis: that is, to illustrate the inner condition of the library and describe the events in the "urban book shelf".

Abstract:
Τaking into consideration how frequent the presence of light is in the most of the communication events and initiatives of human beings, as well as, the continuous need of the society for an evolution and facilitation of communication, without barriers, this thesis aims to study how light can be an impactful medium, suitable to influence and create, a social worldwide engagement οn a daily basis. Βy applying current techniques and methodologies of the field, through the published bibliography and articles, the collection and presentation of the existing projects, original interviews and questionnaires, this research, attempts to present significant reasons and arguments that designate the light as a basic communication tool, suitable to dynamically contribute in transferring messages and information on sociopolitical, environmental and health-related fields. In the end, it is justified that light under a certain context is an attractive medium, suitable for raising awareness, communicating messages for local and global issues and creating social engagement in the urban space. By providing arguments for the importance of the use of light in sociopolitical, environmental and health issues, emphasizing on the dynamic lighting environments that can communicate information through light, this research concludes with an aspiration for more conscious use of this communicative “language” in the urban space. Through the final conclusions, it is evident that the continuation of a constructive dialogue on the subject will help solidify the position of light as a fundamental and meaningful communication medium. For that reason, the discussions and conclusions will give the audience and researchers the incentive to dive deeper into the issue and investigate the many aspects of it in further analysis.

Kenarsari, Anhari Amir. "Medium access control protocol design for in-vehicle power line communication." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45394.

Full text
Abstract:
Nowadays, the number of electronic devices in vehicles grows at an exponential rate. For the purpose of communication between these components, several standardized communication protocols such as controller area network (CAN), local interconnect network (LIN), and FlexRay have been developed and are used in vehicles. However, the use of additional wires for data communication still results in a significant increase in the complexity, volume, weight, and cost of wiring harness. Vehicular power line communication (V-PLC) is an interesting alternative that offers numerous advantages. This technology reuses the existing direct current (DC) power network in vehicles as the physical medium for data transmission and allows eliminating some of the wiring harnesses devoted to convey data signals. Hence, This technology can potentially reduce the vehicle cost, weight, and fuel consumption. However, to provide reliable communication over power lines, several challenges need to be addressed. These include impulsive noise produced by electrical devices connected to the bus and frequency-selective behavior of the power line channels introduced by impedance mismatches in the wiring harness. In this thesis, we study research challenges for the medium access control (MAC) protocol design of V-PLC networks. We propose MAC protocols for such systems, which provide fast collision resolution, and perform performance evaluations on these protocols in terms of collision probability, system throughput, and packet delay. Our results show that these protocols outperform the previously proposed protocol, contention detection and resolution (CDR) in all scenarios. We then investigate the effect of carrier sensing errors on the performance of the proposed MAC protocols. We start with addressing the problem of detection of unknown signals in impulsive noise by using a robust detector, which first removes the impulses from the signal and then performs linear signal detection on the cleaned samples. We obtain the network throughput and delay of the proposed protocols as a function of carrier sensing errors. We then suggest a framework for the optimal joint design of the physical layer signal detector and MAC layer protocol.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the role of social media in the communication process of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Based on communication and social media theories, this study examines how small and medium-sized enterprises incorporate social media in their marketing and communication strategy. As a result, this study concludes that social media has an important role in the communication process of SMEs. The study shows, that to increase a two-way communication via social media, SMEs must focus more on enabling interactions, to collect responses and feedback. A professional appearance on the platforms has been considered as crucial. The results additionally show that SMEs recognize space and need for improvement of their social media skills. The integration of social media into the overall concept differs among the cases. A major obstacle can be found regarding the detection of target groups on social media. Moreover, a lack of strategic orientation can be found in terms of social media goals and budgets, as well as performance measurement.

Case, Judd Ammon. "Geometry of empire: radar as logistical medium." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/474.

Abstract:
This study introduces logistical media and considers one example of such--radar. Innis (1972; 1951), Mumford (1970; 1934), Carey (1988), Virilio (1997; 1989; 1986) and others are discussed as preparing an understanding of logistical media as subtle but powerful devices of cognitive, social, and political coordination that affect our experience of time and space. Radar is presented as significant because of its progressive-catastrophic potential. Radar was invented for national defense and to remotely survey the earth and its atmosphere, but it also allows new collisions with "others." American radar was primarily developed at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT during the 1940s. Historical objects, principally from the MIT Radiation Laboratory Historian's Office, are arranged and discussed according to Walter Benjamin's (1999) historical method. Benjamin theorized that historical debris can be arranged as a dialectical image or constellation that can momentarily disrupt our sense of chronological progress and denaturalize ideology. Benjamin described this disruption as the interruption of the present with the now. Radar is considered in terms of authoritarian modernity, and as contributing to a politics of distance, speed, angle, movement, and perception. Objects from radar history are marshaled to illuminate radar's pre-history, its use of feedback to identify and coordinate objects, and its susceptibility to error and disruption. Present understandings of the 9/11 attacks are challenged by the now of these objects, and an understanding of logistical media is furthered.

As technology advances in social media, crisis management professionals and researchers are charged with revamping or discovering new communication tools to address the dissemination crisis information. Social media provides a platform for open conversations, community, and connectedness among individuals and permits anyone to become the source of information during a time of crisis. Crisis news can be shared and reshared among millions of people without the need of a professional source, such as a journalist. A crisis may disrupt social order to an organization’s reputation and legitimacy, but a crisis also provides an opportunity for growth or renewal. Previous literature has analyzed crisis communication affects on organizational reputation through cases studies; however, there is lack of analysis in using an experimental design. Through an experiment with 207 undergraduate students, this study empirically evaluates the dissemination of crisis communication through Twitter and its effect on organizational communication. Using McLuhan’s (1967) concept of the medium is the message, this study highlights past findings, explicates types of crises, and focuses on the medium as a variable (not content of response) of interest to provide groundwork for an experimental inquiry into how the medium itself (as opposed to message content) impacts the efficacy of organizational crisis responses. A 2x3 experimental design with two research conditions- types of crisis: (1) intentional and (2) unintentional and source types: (1) organization (2) journalist, and (3) friend was used in this study. An online questionnaire was administered through an online survey service to approximately 2,000 undergraduates. Participants were randomized in one of six conditions based on the type of crisis (unintentional and intentional) and the source (organization/journalist/friend) of the message and directed to read an unintentional or intentional press release. Findings indicated that the perception of responsibility is a valid factor to consider during a possible crisis. Overall, as the previous studies have concluded, the organization is perceived as responsible for the crisis.

Abstract:

Beck, Rose Marie. "Ambiguous signs: the role of the Kanga as a medium of communication." Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2012. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-91642.

Abstract:
This article deals with the communicative uses of the printed wrap cloth kanga. Specifically I will show how the kanga is constituted as a communicative sign and is at the core of ambiguation processes that are pervasive to this communicative genre. Because of its high degree of ambiguity the question arises whether we can, for communication by way of kanga, still speak of communication in any sense. In my opinion, we can only do so if it is possible to analyze the communication process within existing models of communication. Starting from the hypothesis that the kanga indeed has communicative potential communication is understood as social interaction, whereby the focus is not solely on meanings in a pragmatic or semantic sense, but rather on social meaning, i.e. the negotiation of relationships between the interactants in an area of tension between individual, social and cultural interests (within which meaning in a linguistic sense does play a role, too) (Anderson & Meyer 1988, Burgoon et aL 1996). This will be shown in the fust part of the analysis. In the second part of this article I will describe and explain the role of the medium kanga within this process of ambiguation. This article is based on material collected during two field periods in 1994/ 1995 and 1996 in Mombasa and, from 1995 onwards, in various archives in the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Carlisle, Melissa. "Auditors' evaluation of evidence: The effect of communication medium and management information." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53925.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of communication channel (e.g., face-to-face, written) and management information (i.e., background information on the reliability of client personnel) on auditors’ judgments of evidence persuasiveness in a management inquiry setting. Management information directs auditors to focus on the source of the evidence, creating a goal of assessing management during evidence collection. Auditors are distracted away from the evidence when the communication channel presents management characteristic cues (i.e., face-to-face), unrelated to the message and related to their new unconscious goal of assessing management. By comparison, when evidence is communicated by a channel that does not provide additional management characteristic cues (i.e. written), auditors are better able to evaluate the evidence without distraction. I predict an interaction effect, where communication channel effects auditor judgments when management information is provided, but not otherwise. I design a 2x2 between-participants experiment to test my theory and present results of an experiment with 122 practicing senior auditors. Auditor participants receive an explanation from a client’s assistant controller to explain an unexpected fluctuation in a financial ratio. I manipulate the means by which the assistant controller communicates with the auditor (communication channel) and the presence of background information about the assistant controller (management information). Results of my experiment indicate an interaction effect of the communication channel and management information. When management information is provided, auditors assess the evidence as more persuasive when communication is face-to-face versus text. Auditors not receiving management information do not assess the evidence any differently, irrespective of communication channel. I also find evidence that auditors assess management differently when management information is provided. The results suggest that auditors are focused more on evaluating management when communicating through face-to-face versus written channels. Further, these assessments of management are consistent with the pattern of persuasiveness, indicating that they use this information more in their judgments when communicating face-to-face versus text and only when management information is provided. The results of this research suggest auditors may be assessing evidence as more persuasive than merited when management information is present and auditors are communicating with management face-to-face. Auditors as well as regulators should be aware of this effect so that adjustments can be made. Future researchers should consider these results in future research on management inquiry.

Crossley, Lisa Nicole. "The influence of the Dark Triad and communication medium on deceptive outcomes." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/59142.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study examined the influence of dark personality traits (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism) and communication condition (i.e., face-to-face [FtF] or computer-mediated communication [CMC]) on success in a persuasive deception task. Dark personality traits commonly have been associated with manipulative behaviour in a variety of FtF contexts (e.g., workplace interactions, interpersonal relationships). However, less is known about whether dark personality traits function in the same manner online. Research on negotiation has found that individuals high in Dark Triad traits tend to perform better FtF than through CMC, and that they are outperformed by individuals lacking in dark personality traits in the context of online negotiations (Crossley, Woodworth, Black, & Hare, 2016). The current study utilized a decision-making task in which participants (N = 204) worked in dyads. One participant was randomly assigned as the deceiver and was instructed to attempt to persuade their opponent in order to increase their own chances of winning a $500 raffle. Participants consisted of both psychology and business students. Previous research has found that business students have heightened levels of dark personality traits (e.g., Hassall, Boduszek, & Dhingra, 2015). Further, the language from both the FtF and CMC dyads were recorded and analyzed to assess for differences. Results indicated that certain dark personality traits (i.e., psychopathy and narcissism) were associated with decreased deceptive success in the online context, but only for those individuals who scored the highest on the traits (i.e., typically business students). Additional results emerged in relation to language, indicating that psychopathy and Machiavellianism are related to a more guarded style of discourse.

Abstract:
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2008.
Organisational communication in today‘s organisations has not only become far more complex and varied but more important to overall organisational functioning and success also, organisations can not operate without communication, organisations involve people and people cannot interact with each other without communication. However, different styles of management have an influence or impact over people, on the way in which people co-operate and on the results of changes because change is both inevitable (unavoidable) and necessary in any business and it is important for managers and employees to hone (sharpen) their skills in change management. This study investigates the communication strategies aimed at improving the success rate of small to medium business enterprises. The first part of the study reviews literature on communication, change management, different styles of management, change implementation, importance of planning and communication, kinds of changes and managers and power. Subsequent chapters describe the construction of a survey instrument employed to measure and evaluate on the communication strategies aimed at improving the success rate of small to medium business enterprises. Penultimate chapters blend the insights gained from this literature review to interpret the results, obtained through the quantitative research methodology, to describe a set of conclusions and recommendations in the context of the communication strategies aimed at improving the success rate of small to medium business enterprises.

Sutton, Sindi. "Communicative dispositions of Foundation Phase Afrikaans-speaking teachers using English as medium of instruction." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/62907.

Full text
Abstract:
Education in South Africa has experienced many changes since the dawn of democracy in 1994. The demographic composition of schools has changed dramatically as urbanisation has increased and the movement of people is no longer regulated by Apartheid laws. Classrooms now are multi-lingual and multi-cultural with learners from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Many senior teachers at Ditlou Primary School started their teaching careers more than 20 years ago and were trained to work within an almost homogeneous school context, using their mother tongue - Afrikaans - exclusively as the medium of instruction. They are now required to teach in English. The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to describe the communicative dispositions of Afrikaans-speaking Foundation Phase teachers and to establish how the changing linguistic context of Ditlou Primary School may have influenced their communicative dispositions when teaching. This qualitative study is theoretically underpinned by McCroskey’s Model of Instructional Communication (2004) as a theoretical framework and used interpretivism as an epistemological paradigm. Data were collected through extensive field work. The instrumentation included a language-biography questionnaire, semi-structured and group interviews and a participant journal. The data collected were pooled categorised and coded (deductive and inductive). Although unique to each teacher-participant, key findings suggests that a generic communicative disposition could be sketched for Afrikaans-speaking Foundation Phase teachers at the research site. The teacher-participants agreed that they spoke at a much slower pace and that their voice pitch was higher than when they taught in their mother tongue. The volume of their speech also differed when using English for instructional purposes. Their oral proficiency in the language of teaching and learning could be considered sufficient. In terms of non-verbal communicative aspects, the layout of all classrooms was strictly traditional and authoritarian ensuring learner eye-contact constantly. Yet despite strict discipline, teachers prioritised the emotional well-being of their learners by displaying positive haptic and kinaesthetic behaviour. The influence of personality or temperament on their communicative disposition cannot be negated and is directly linked to their habitual behavioural patterns and unique traits exhibited in their classroom communication. The changed linguistic context primarily influenced the teacher-participants communicative dispositions by necessitating a switch to English as the medium of instruction - a language which is neither theirs nor the learners’ home language. Teaching multi-cultural and multi-lingual learners also had a direct bearing on how the teacher-participants communicative dispositions changed although this was self-reported and would need further investigation. Further recommendations emanating from this study include providing a framework to prepare pre-service teachers to teach in a non-native language and to help them develop effective communicative dispositions for the classroom.

Abstract:
This participant-observation study explores the process of gathering and evaluating both financial and non-financial information and communication and transfer of that information within a medium-size Electrical Company in Christchurch, New Zealand. The previous literature has established the importance and the main characteristics of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), mainly studying manufacturing companies. However, there has been little research done in New Zealand on the overall communication process and the financial and non-financial information usage in a small-medium enterprise. Face-to-face interviews were carried out with all the office employees and two partners, along with a ten month participant-observation in the Electrical Company in order to understand how financial and non-financial information is communicated and processed in an SME. Also, research in an SME that has overcome the 2008 economic depression and several major earthquakes allows a deep understanding of lessons learned and what is valued by the Electrical Company. The research has found characteristics of this SME similar to those that have been mentioned in previous literature. However, the partners of the Electrical Company understand the importance of financial management and use financial information extensively to ensure the business expenses are under control. Moreover, the partners use more than just financial information to manage the company. They gather non-financial information through talking to their accountant, their customers and people in the same industry and they keenly follow the news on the rebuilding of Christchurch.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of a new metaphor for artificial intelligence (AI). Traditionally, the computer within AI has been viewed as an agent, one with which the user engages in a conversation. More recently certain researchers have proposed the notion that artificial intelligence (and indeed computing in general) can be more appropriately seen as a form of writing. Initially this thesis reviews the literature in this area, and aspects of AI which support the approach. Features of writing are then described which show parallels with AI. This then allows us to take lessons from the history and development of both traditional writing and the new computer-based writing systems to inform the design of a new type of artificial intelligence system. A design based on these features, called Running Texts is presented through a number of small examples. Issues that arise from these and possible future developments, based on the implementation are then discussed. A rationale for users choosing to learn a system such as Running Texts is proposed, as benefits from the psychological and social implications of writing can be applied to AI systems, when they are seen as writing. The same parallels point out potential problems, and suggest new ways to see the relation between AI and thought.

Abstract:
Small- to medium-size enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in a dynamic economy through job creation, poverty alleviation, and socioeconomic development in developed and developing countries. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore how SME leaders in Lagos, Nigeria, adopted information and communication technology (ICT) as a business strategy to increase profitability and compete globally. Organizational leaders have adopted ICT so that their organizations can become more efficient, effective, innovative, and globally competitive. This study involved 4 SMEs that had successfully implemented ICT. The participants included 5 SME leaders from each of the SMEs. The data collection method included in-person semistructured interviews of participants and review of existing company data. Data were analyzed using inductive data analysis, which included member checking to ensure trustworthiness of interpretations and occurred until theoretical saturation had occurred. The technology acceptance model (TAM), which specifies the relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward computer use, and intention to use technology, was applied as a framework to explain the Nigerian SME's ICT adoption strategies. Four major themes emerged from the data analysis: ICT adoption factors, ICT roles and benefits, role of government, and SME success factors. The findings of this study may help SME leaders and government leaders address many of the factors inhibiting the adoption of ICT in SMEs. The findings of this study may positively affect social change by ensuring that SMEs are successful and able to create jobs, which in turn may help to alleviate poverty and promote socioeconomic development through adoption of ICT.

Abstract:
Abstract This study examines communication through the mobile medium in customer relationship management (hereafter mCRM). Although the academic research on mCRM is gradually evolving, there is still a lack of empirical research on this topical issue. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to begin to fill this gap by enhancing the theoretical and practical understanding of mCRM. The empirical part of the study is conducted as a qualitative case study. Seven Finnish companies utilizing the mobile medium as a communication channel in CRM were selected for the empirical analysis. Interviews, observations and personal experiences gained within those companies form the main sources of data. The main theoretical contributions of the present study to existing academic literature are as follows. First, the study proposes the conceptualization of the focal phenomenon of the study, mCRM, and further elicits the salient characteristics of it. Second, following the conceptualization, the study focuses on communication as the core of the interaction between the company and the customer via the mobile medium. Accordingly, the study sheds light on the key elements of the communication process within mCRM and its various phases. Third, the study founds a theoretical framework for mCRM; identifying the customer relationship management, mobile commerce and communication literature streams that define mCRM theoretically. Fourth, the study elaborates on the specific role of the mobile medium as a channel within CRM and highlights the ways in which it differs from all other channels within the multichannel CRM environment. Although mCRM communication has an inherent potential to benefit both company and customer, it has been utilized quite cautiously to date. This is rather surprising given that, compared to other channels, the mobile medium has an exceptional ability to reach people. In addition, greater utilization of the mobile medium could save time and money. This is because many face-to-face encounters could easily be replaced by communication through the mobile medium. The study offers guidelines on aspects ranging from the initiation of mCRM to actual communication through mCRM. Hopefully, the findings of this study will encourage managers, regardless of industry, to consider whether their company could provide added-value of any kind through the use of the mobile medium to benefit their customer relationships.

The Internet of Things brings unique constraints and a huge variety of applications. This forces to be able to establish energy efficient communications (and never the less low-delay) within highly dynamic networks. We focused on improving the medium access control (MAC) to optimize the management of wireless communications, the main source of energy consumption in these networks. This thesis discusses the self-adaptation of asynchronous MAC solutions and shows that a localized cooperation between communicating objects can maintain an efficient sharing of the communication resource in highly dynamic networks (traffic, mobility, failures). In addition to a reasoning on the tools of simulation and experimentation, we conducted comprehensive evaluation campaigns of our contributions that address traffic changes and mobility in dense networks

Abstract:
Dialogical communication is considered to be the most ethical way of practicing public relations. Especially social medias’ potential for engaging in dialogue is mostly not exploited to its full potential. This study aims to shed light on new technology-based firms’ use of dialogical communication on Twitter. The focus hereby is on the formal side of dialogue and not on its content. Moreover possible explanations for the presence or absence of dialogue are taken into consideration. To be able to classify the results they are discussed in the context of the Fortune 500 companies’ use of Twitter. In order to do so a content analysis of both the Twitter profiles and tweets of 89 new technology-based firms was undertaken. The results showed that the Fortune 500 companies were communicating more dialogically than the new technology-based firms did. Bigger companies engaged in dialogue more often. The performance was furthermore improved by listening rather than posting. An implication is that a profound knowledge of communication is necessary in order to use the social medium successfully. A pure knowledge of technology was not found to be beneficial for this public relations practice.

Abstract:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the information and communication technology (ICT) industries play a crucial role in the new economy. Most SMEs operate in a fiercely competitive environment; as such, it is important to optimize business practices. It is believed that performance measurement (PM) tools can help to identify weaknesses, clarify objectives and strategies, and improve management processes. While many theories on performance measurement and performance management have been developed mainly for large organizations over the past two decades, few have been tailored for SMEs. In addition, research highlights that these tools are difficult to adapt for SMEs. This research aims to identify and investigate the critical factors influencing the performance of SMEs in the ICT industries and, in doing so, develop a new PM framework that is able to effectively measure SME performance. To improve the accuracy of the judgments in this research, methodological triangulation strategy, which mixes both qualitative and quantitative approaches, was employed. At the same time, data-source triangulation was applied to reduce the impact of potential biases. In qualitative research, twenty interviews were conducted, sixteen cases were analysed through cross-case analysis. In quantitative research, sixty-six valid responses to questionnaire surveys were collected. This thesis has completed three major tasks: 1) Investigated critical success factors that affect the performance of SMEs. 2) Analysed existing SME performance measurement techniques in order to identify the best framework for SMEs in ICT industries. 3) Constructed a practical PM framework and implementation strategy for best-practice PM in ICT-related SMEs. Research results show that an effective PM system for ICT SMEs should help the companies to formulate right strategies that can especially manage the uncertainty of the external environment in their development. Importantly, a PM process should be constructed which aligns with the SMEs' daily processes such as ordinary planning, budgeting and reporting processes. Such a PM system should involve a flexible PM framework that can be adapted dynamically to suit the changes in the PM process. It is also required that the PM framework help SMEs identify customer needs, manage and measure customer satisfaction. A PM framework meets the above requirements can be built based on the structure of business excellence models and the theory of system management. At the same time, the KPIs should be incorporated in the PM system to help design the PM framework. The constructed PM framework involves measuring both performance determinants and performance results. The performance determinants, including both internal determinants and external determinants, are represented in following dimensions: capability building; resource developing and utilizing; environment adapting; strategies formulating; internal process managing and PM on innovation and learning. The performance results' dimension should include the financial results to satisfy the investors, the customer satisfaction indicators to meet customers' needs, the competitive indicators to reflect the competitive advantages, and the collaborative measures to measure the partnership.

Abstract:
Sound does not transmit well across the interface of two media. Therefore, most organisms communicate using one medium. Some anurans vocalize at the interface of air and water, though reception of these vocalizations is generally unknown. The túngara frog ( Engystomops pustulosus ) may be the first anuran to have evidence suggesting simultaneous acoustic communication both above and below the air-water interface. This thesis addresses whether the female túngara frog would be receptive to underwater acoustic signals and if males project their advertisement calls at biologically relevant intensities underwater. Females floated and swam with their eardrums and body walls constantly submerged. Using laser Doppler vibrometry, peak vibrations of female eardrums were found to be centered at about 3.5 kHz in air, but dropped to about 1.4 kHz underwater. The peak velocity of the eardrum was about 0.2 mm/s in air and 0.04 mm/s in water when stimulated with tones at 80 dB relative to 20 µPa. Males projected their advertisement calls with a sound pressure level of 121 dB (at 10 cm, re. 20 µPa) in water and 98 dB (at 10 cm, re. 20 µPa) in air. In relation to air, the dominant frequency of the advertisement call (0.8 kHz) was the most intense spectral band underwater whereas the dominant frequency of the chuck (2.5 kHz in air) was less intense. The advertisement signal for the male túngara frog was broadcasted underwater with more energy than in air at its main frequencies. Female eardrums were sensitive to frequencies within the male advertisement call both in air and in water, if the frequencies were transmitted at amplitudes plausible to be encountered in nature. These results strengthen the available evidence of underwater communication, and indicate the presence of auditory specializations in the acoustic communication of this species.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Public Relations Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, 2004
This research paper is aimed at formulating a corporate communication strategy for a medium- sized organisation, Highbury Solutions, operating in the computer software ' industry. Highbury Solutions consists of a Managing Director and four managers who, together with fifteen operational staff, make up a total staff complement of twenty. Highbury Solutions had a tumover of approximately R25 million over the past financial year (2004). The organisation enjoys a partnership with the computer conglomerate IBM in which the branding of Highbury Solutions products carries the computer giants' endorsement. This relationship has been in existence since 2001. The relationship, however, according to preliminary research, indicates no communication strategy or formal communication channels in place between the two organisations. The aim of this research paper will thus be to transform theoretical perspectives into a practical approach and design of a suitable corporate communication strategy for Highbury Solutions. This strategy will be based on sound research principles of both the organisation and its stakeholders and will be based on the model for Corporate Communication Strategy in Steyn & Puth (2002: 62). This research paper will aim to formulate a corporate communication strategy that will nurture and grow the relationship between the two organisations for the next three to five years. Chapter one consists of an introduction to the research issue, including the aim of the research, the stating of the research problem as well as identifying subproblems and possible assumptions.

Full text
Abstract:
During the past few years, a worldwide interest and unanimous consensus has arisen on personal communication services (PCS), where satellites can play a crucial role in a global scenario for the provision of PCS's all over the world. While for maritime and aeronautical communication services, the mature technologies of geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite systems seem the most suitable for present and future enhanced systems, other orbital configuration such as low earth orbit (LEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) are being considered for the provision of satellite personal communication services to hand-held mobile terminals. One of the main objectives of personal communication services is the capability to provide personal (or continuous) mobility, communication anytime, anywhere. In general, satellite systems can provide a limited capacity with respect to terrestrial networks, nevertheless they are particularly suited in order to cover large terrestrial areas offering a scarce amount of traffic. The problem of radio frequency management for mobile applications has been addressed by World Administrative Radio Conference (WARC-92). One of the most relevant decisions taken at WARC-92 was to allocate the radio determination satellite system (RDSS) 1610-1626.5 MHz (L-Band) and 2483.5-2500 MHz (S-Band) slots to LEO satellite services on a worldwide, primary basis. This enables "big LEO's" to have a reasonable amount of spectram (i.e. capacity) to serve a substantial number of subscribers. However, the available amount of spectrum at L-band and S-band out of WARC-92 appears hardly sufficient to permit several systems to operate. Hence, to enable all the systems to operate and fulfil the capacity demand, S-PCNs need to share the limited available frequency spectrum. In this thesis we have proposed and evaluated a new fully overlapped band sharing scheme for mobile satellite systems operating in a land mobile satellite channel environment. The results show that the mobile satellite systems can share the limited available bandwidth. However, the overall system capacity of the MSS has been reduced due to excess intersystem interference. In order to reduce the excess inter-system interference a new enhanced overlapped band sharing protocol is proposed. The performance of this optimised band sharing scheme outperforms the conventional band segmentation scheme. Thus, achieving superior overall system capacity.

Abstract:
Abstract of the research: What does Dancing Have to Do with Blogging? A  Study of Verbal and Non-verbal Communication among Dance Bloggers Dance, in its essence can be seen as a form of social interaction. Unique role of dancing is the recurrent motif in dance-related theories which underline that dance should not be approached only from the perspective of physical exercise but also interpreted within its social context.  In other words, dance is a symbol of a changing society Dance is can be also seen as a non-verbal expression of emotions. These are projected from the inner subjective world of an individual onto the audience. Non-verbal communication through movement and gestures, as well as spatial arrangement of bodies predominates but the recent trends show the development of a ‘verbal’ dancing occurring online via specialized blogs and social networks. The growing popularity of dance blogs implies a great diversity within the communicative methods used by dancers. The traditional view of dance as a representative of non-verbal interaction will be challenged in this paper and hypothesis stating that the verbal and non-verbal communication are strictly interrelated will be suggested. Moreover, the paper will concentrate on the impact that online blogging communities have on socialization and identity formation among dancers. The research question revolves around the idea that dance blogging demonstrates the need to use verbal signs to complete the predominantly non-verbal communication. Furthermore, the reasons motivating bloggers to write about dance will be analyzed. This will be done in order to demonstrate how attitudes to dancing and communicating as well as dancers’ distinctive ways of socialization are reflected by their belongingness to the blogging community. The investigation attempts at identifying the mechanism behind online interactions among dancers and the ways in which the Internet influences socialization and formation of dancer’s identity. The theories used in study are rooted in both macro- and micro-sociology and their aim is to clarify concepts such as communication, meaning and identification within a group. The data will be collected through interviews conducted with dance bloggers and through the observations of thirty dance blogs. Content analysis of such data will, hopefully, demonstrate how significant blogging is for the online and offline communication processes.

Abstract:

As students of graphic design the craft of print is close to our hearts. One of the most essential mediums of the evolution of printing techniques is the poster. In a world where digital mediums are being utilized to a greater degree everyday, our love for the printed poster makes us wonder if the days of the poster are counted.

What we did was to take a closer look at the role of the poster in promoting events. We focused on the Stockholm area and did qualitative interviews with three different event promoters. Live Nation which is an international live entertainment promoter, Dramaten which is one of Sweden’s most well respected theaters and Stockholm Live which is a stand up comedy promoter in Stockholm city.

From doing this we learned that economics play an important part in defining the role of the poster. Our research shows that events with a lower budget utilize a larger degree of promotion through posters. We also learned that the communicative effect of the poster is mainly positive when used in an integrated collaboration with other media channels.

What we finally drew as a conclusion is that the use of promotion with posters is declining. But there is no reason to believe it will completely disappear as its unique and effective communicative qualities is in no way obsolete.

Sheffield, James. "The effects of bargaining orientation and communication medium on negotiations in the Bilateral Monopoly Task." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184682.

Full text
Abstract:
Discussions via electronic mail are becoming commonplace to support decision-making and coordinating activities. Users of these technologies are usually dispersed either in a geographical and/or a temporal sense. Thus, unlike participants in face-to-face meetings, participants in electronic text discussions cannot speak to each other nor can they see each other. Unfortunately, few guidelines exist which identify the tasks for which electronic text and face-to-face meetings are effective. This study examines how communication via electronic text impacts the processes and outcomes of negotiation in dyads. Electronic and face-to-face discussions are characterized by the efficiency of the communication media supported by each, and by media richness, the ability of those media to convey social and emotional information. These communication media will be compared and contrasted on the ability of each to support a negotiation task which requires two participants to simultaneously solve a logical problem and resolve conflicting objectives. In a controlled laboratory experiment, pairs of subjects with either a competitive or an integrative bargaining orientation completed the Bilateral Monopoly Task in one of four communication media (text-only, text-plus-visual-access, audio-only, audio-plus-visual-access). As hypothesized, an integrative bargaining orientation and/or the relatively efficient audio mode of communication lead to a higher joint outcome. In addition, visual access (which conveys a rich array of social and emotional information) resulted in a higher joint outcome for subjects with integrative bargaining orientations, but lower joint outcomes for those with competitive orientations. The results indicate that bargaining orientation and communication medium have a marked impact on negotiation processes and outcomes. An efficient communication media is required to closely examine negotiation issues, and to reduce uncertainty about the constraints inherent to the negotiation task itself. Media richness strongly moderates the effect of bargaining orientation. A rich media enhances both the predisposition of an integrative bargainer to trust, and a competitive bargainer to dominate, the other party. Uncertainty regarding the logical structure of the task was reduced only via verbal communication, while equivocality regarding the bargaining orientation of the negotiating parties was reduced only via visual communication.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the viability of a new communication medium for telepresence, namely a robotic head with a 3D face mask. In order to investigate this, a program was developed for an existing social robot, enabling the robot to be used as a device reflecting the facial movements of the operator. A study is performed with the operator located in front of a computer with a web camera, connected to speak through the robot to two interlocutors located in a room with the robot. This setup is then compared to a regular video call. The results from this study show that the robot improves the presence of the operator in the room, along with providing enhanced simulated gaze direction and eye contact with the interlocutors. It is concluded that using a robotic head with a 3D face mask is a viable option for a communication medium for telepresence.

Full text
Abstract:
Includes bibliography.
This thesis undertakes to investigate the nature and function of theatre-for-development. The objectives are to place theatre-for-development in the context of development communication theory, and to examine how theatre functions as communication. In the process of this examination a new model of theatrical communication in theatre-for-development, and a new paradigm of intervention, are evolved. The thesis begins by exploring the reasons for the failure of existing media systems to serve the needs of development in Africa. The failures are mostly due to the fact that the majority of the people have minimal or no participation in information generation and dissemination. Theatre is identified as one medium that could be utilized towards the realization of democratizing communication systems, and of giving the periphery access to the production and distribution of messages. The thesis then proceeds to review crucial literature in theatre-for-development and on development communication. The literature that has been selected has particular relevance in that while it treats current perspectives in these disciplines, it gives an historical account of theatre in Africa, and an account of the various perspectives and orthodoxies in the history of mass communication in general, and development communication in particular. The major case study of the thesis is a theatre-for-development cooperative society in Lesotho called Marotholi Travelling Theatre. The thesis therefore discusses the problems of underdevelopment in Lesotho. Since this study deals with-development communication, and attempts a structural examination of the context of theatre-for-development, the reader is introduced to the conditions that engender the theatre that is analyzed in the study. An account of the communication environment is also given. Because the communication environment of the rural areas in Lesotho is characterized by the predominant use of oral and traditional methods, popular and traditional media in Lesotho are also examined. After setting a theoretical framework by examining theatrical communication in theatre-for-development, and the rules underlying it, the thesis proceeds to analyze five plays created by Marotholi Travelling Theatre. First, a brief history of each play is given, and this is followed by an analysis of how the play functions as a vehicle for conscientization, and as communication. The plays are discussed in the context of five different methodologies of theatre-for-development: agitprop, participatory agitprop, simultaneous dramaturgy, forum theatre, and comgen theatre. It is in the process of this analysis that a new model of theatrical communication in theatre-for-development is evolved. The new paradigm of intervention that is posited also emanates from the analysis of the plays. It illustrates the extent to which the various methodologies of theatre-for-development can be utilized either for development (and, therefore, liberation), or for dissemination. The thesis concludes by focussing on the salient points that have emerged in the analysis. Crucial points are summarized, and recommendations for an effective utilization of theatre as a medium for development communication are posited.

Abstract:

De utvalda spelen är Capcoms Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, Sony Computer Entertainment Americas God of War, Konamis Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty och Ubisofts Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

In an attempt by me to give the gaming medium the same kind of treatment as many other kinds of mediums before it I have chosen four games of two different genres for an analysis of their plot, characters, aesthetics and gameplay. The plot is summarized according to the rules for narrative storytelling and a semiotic approach is then used for finding things, signs, that are worth taking up for analysis in all four categories. Some comparisons are made between the games, foremost within the aesthetics and gameplay categories, first within genres and then between genres to find similarities and differences in the ways the game developers have chosen to challenge the player, make the games fun to play and present the games’ plot. The chosen games are Capcom’s Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s God of War, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The results are comments by me on the signs deemed important enough within every category. The conclusion is made that the games, though different when representing the genre they belong to, have certain common signs that are traceable back to the arcade games of the old days.

Abstract:
Scientific culture is not popular because the essential nature of science – the models and practises that make it up – cannot be communicated via conventional media in a manner that is interesting to the average person. These models and practises might be communicated in an interesting manner using the new medium of the digital game, yet very few digital games based upon scientific simulations have been created and thus the potential of such games to facilitate scientific knowledge construction cannot be studied directly. Scientific simulations have, however, been much used by scientists to facilitate their own knowledge construction, and equally, both simulations and games have been used by science educators to facilitate knowledge construction on the part of their students. The large academic literatures relating to these simulations and games collectively demonstrate that their ability to: re-create reality; model complex systems; be visual and interactive; engage the user in the practise of science; and to engage the user in construction and collaboration, makes them powerful tools for facilitating scientific knowledge construction. Moreover, the large non-academic literature discussing the nature of digital games (which are themselves both simulations and games) demonstrates that their ability to perform the above tasks (i.e. to re-create reality, model complex systems, and so forth) is what makes them enjoyable to play.¶Because the features of scientific and educational simulations and games that facilitate knowledge construction are the very same features that make digital games enjoyable to play, the player of a scientific-simulation-based digital game would be simultaneously gaining enjoyment and acquiring scientific knowledge. If science were widely communicated using digital games, therefore, then it would be possible for there to be a popular scientific culture.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate children's developing sense of number in the computational medium of Boxer. Boxer's combination of graphical and symbolic elements afforded the opportunity for children to visualise numbers in an operational way while simultaneously offering insights into how this operational approach mediated their thinking. There were three inter-related aspects to the study, with visualisation being the common feature of all three. • (i) How does the visual structure of Boxer influence students' (aged 9 - 11) ability to program? • (ii) What interpretations do students place on a number system extended beyond the natural numbers and how did they choose to represent these? • (iii) How can the learning environment of Boxer be exploited as a context for developing students' sense of number? Following an exploratory study, pedagogical models for investigating issues (i) and (iii) were developed. For issue (i), Boxer was exploited as a means of introducing itself. This, in turn, meant documenting the issues involved in a process of iterative design. For issue (iii), a model of learning was developed which proposed that the children should construct their own microworlds. Following an off-computer investigation of issue (ii), the model was refined to that of children constructing operational computational objects, and the research aim broadened to include an investigation of how these objects mediated their expression of number. This part of the research consisted of a longitudinal study lasting two years. It entailed case studies with four pairs of children, while the rest of the class learned Boxer independently. None of the children had previous Boxer or Logo experience. The research setting was a normal classroom in an inner-London primary school. Data for issues (i) and (iii) was obtained by means of video recordings and annotated print-outs, while data for issue (ii) was obtained by written records and audio recordings. Evidence from the research suggests that students' programming is significantly more structured in Boxer relative to Logo, and this structure is directly related to the visual nature of Boxer. Moreover, data from the number studies suggests that this visual structure was also instrumental in providing students with the means to connect number processes with number concepts, thus enabling them to engage with number ideas which might otherwise have been beyond their reach.

Abstract:
Today information dissemination is completely different comparing to both five and twenty years ago, and as the technology develops, so does our way of accessing information. In many workplaces information dissemination is a key process and previous research has shown that effective information sharing increases the potential for the company to develop. This study has examined how information ought to be communicated to cowerkers within a company. A distinction has been made between channel and medium and has made it possible to determine how information is being notified and how information is being presented. This has led to a result showing that coworkers prefers information being presented orally, and that it is a difference when the same information is being notified. The study is based on a case study within a company active in the electrical and engineering industry. A qualitative interview and a quantitative survey has made it possible to generate a clear picture of how the information dissemination looks like in the specified company.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The disruptive effects of social media are placing pressure on organizations to adopt or be left behind. There is little empirical research, however, regarding how social networking is used and experienced by adopting organizations. This dissertation is the outcome of an investigation of social media adoption and impact on businesses, and on traditional mass media, in a small and medium enterprise (SME) context. The character of social media adoption was examined, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the theoretical framework. Thematic analysis of the data provided insights on the approach to technology integration and led to the conclusion that social media adoption is influenced by multiple factors including the ease of use, usefulness of the technology, critical mass, and the need to simply keep up with new technology. Facebook, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn emerged as the tools of choice. The potential positive effect of social networking on SME marketing opportunities, brand profile, and customer relationship management makes social media integration imperative for organizational leaders seeking to promote their businesses, grow their customer base, and reduce costs. To reap the full benefits, businesses must develop a collaborative, all-encompassing social media strategy, engaging their community of staff, suppliers, and customers in social networks. As social media force the movement of marketing and other content to open channels, the demand for traditional mass media services will continue to fall. The implications for traditional media organizations cluster around issues of new technology integration and the development of dynamic capabilities that facilitate the identification of new revenue streams and innovative business models to deal with the disruptive challenges presented by social networks. revenue streams and innovative business models to deal with the disruptive challenges presented by social networks.
