Abstract:
Because of increased class sizes, higher staff teaching loads, and inadequate teaching facilities, many marketing faculty have less time to evaluate textbooks effectively. This situation results in text selection processes based on criteria that favor ease of teaching rather than student learning. Since marketing education places great reliance on textbooks as the primary instructional medium, marketing academics must select textbooks using explicit, educationally sound, student-oriented criteria. A method reflecting the most fundamental law of marketing, one that ensures that the chosen texts are easy for students to read and understand, should rate as an important selection process criterion. The cloze procedure has proven to be a highly reliable and valid measure of “understandability.” This study suggests that it is an objective and responsive marketing-oriented technique for selecting marketing textbooks. To demonstrate its use, the technique is used to rank three international editions of principles of marketing textbooks by obtaining scores of understandability from first-year students at one Australian university. These objective scores of understandability, when complemented by other qualitative and quantitative criteria for evaluating textbooks, are very useful for selecting marketing textbooks.

Abstract:
In contemporary society, students’ analytical thinking and reasoning skills are crucial for their future development. The fourth grade (ages 9-10) is a critical stage for cultivating higher-level cognitive skills in students. Mathematics plays a significant role during this period, serving as a fundamental tool for fostering students' analytical thinking and reasoning abilities. Collaborative inquiry-based learning is considered beneficial for enhancing students' analytical thinking and reasoning skills. Therefore, this study aims to design a collaborative inquiry-based instructional model based on the characteristics of mathematics textbooks. The study extensively analyzes primary school mathematics textbooks published by Beijing Normal University and integrates the essential elements of collaborative inquiry-based learning to devise an instructional model tailored to the characteristics of mathematics textbooks. The model comprises six parts: Contextual Introduction (Question 1), Collaborative Inquiry (Question 2), Communication and Sharing (First round), Collaborative Inquiry (Question 3), Communication and Sharing (Second round), Review and Conclusion. The model is designed to assist students in acquiring knowledge through collaborative inquiry, stimulate their curiosity through contextualized learning, improve their analytical thinking and reasoning skills through collaborative inquiry, foster cognitive development through effective communication and sharing, and ultimately solidify acquired knowledge through reflection and conclusion. Theoretically, the analysis suggests that this model may positively impact students’ analytical thinking and reasoning abilities, providing a valuable reference for practical teaching.

The current standards of higher technical education provide for the development of universal competencies of students (groups of competencies “Communication”, “Intercultural interaction”), which should be implemented within the framework of the study of the discipline “Foreign language” and, accordingly, reflected in the content of educational support. As a few decades ago, and today, future engineers and university teachers of foreign languages recognize the inadequacy of teaching foreign language communication only in everyday and professional spheres. The sociocultural approach in foreign language teaching is well characterized in scientific research, and the content of most contemporary school textbooks on foreign languages is saturated with relevant topics and language material. At the same time, the problems of implementing this approach in the content of textbooks for universities, especially technical ones, remain relevant and insufficiently studied. The purpose of the study is to compare, analyze the content of domestic and foreign (authentic) university textbooks in English and German for students of technical universities, published in the current century, for the socio-cultural component of their content (topics, speech material, sociocultural commentary, etc.). In total, the author of the article analyzed 40 textbooks of this direction. The results obtained can be taken into account by the developers of the corresponding university educational literature, teachers of foreign languages of technical universities.

Abstract:
Ukrainian as the state language of an independent European country is the subject of study in various parts of the world, including universities within individual research of Ukrainian studies (for example, Harvard University or the University of Alberta) or Slavic studies (different countries). The latest trends in teaching / learning foreign languages are aimed at: attracting the latest information technologies, quick access to knowledge, taking into account student needs (task-based approach), interpreting language as a tool for career growth or international communication, changing or supplementing the paradigm of language education. Accordingly, the Ukrainian language, which is the object of study outside Ukraine, needs new relevant ways of teaching it as a foreign one, based on the latest quality results of linguistic research of the Ukrainian language, in particular in the functional aspect. The purpose of the article is to analyze the current situation and outline the prospects for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language outside Ukraine (in particular, based on the study of the experience of teaching it in Austria and Germany). The tasks are to carry out a comparative analysis of textbooks of the Ukrainian language for German speakers, to outline the scope of current problems related to the teaching of the Ukrainian language outside Ukraine. This was made possible by the descriptive method, and the functional approach made it possible to trace the conformity of teaching materials with modern requirements and needs of students. Textbooks for German-speaking students are designed for the Beginners level and implicitly take into account the information that for students it is the second Slavic language (usually after Russian). The studied textbooks have a diverse quality of language content (usually intended for beginners, but cover topics, grammatical material, communicative situations from higher levels) and are based on the grammartranslation method (except Klymenko Lina, Kurzidim Jan. Razom (2008); Schubert Ludmila, Ukrainian for beginners and fortresses (2012). It was found that there are no student`s book, teacher`s book, workbook, audio materials, which together according to the stages of training (levels A1-C2) would consistently provide a clearly divided language materials and propose communication skills, taking into account on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (2020) and Standardized requirements. Levels of proficiency in Ukrainian as a foreign language (A1-C2). High-quality linguistic resources of the Ukrainian language (for example, functional grammar of the Ukrainian language, dictionaries of collocations, lexical minimums), taking into account the latest approaches to learning foreign languages, would not only raise students' motivation, but also contribute to greater competitiveness of the Ukrainian language in a modern globalized society.

Abstract:
This work is part of an R&D project involving thirteen Spanish universities in which needs and wants in the field of media education in higher education are studied in the areas of Communication (Communication Studies, Journalism and Advertising) and Education (Teaching, Pedagogy, Psychology and Social Education). The objective of this study focuses on analysing the college textbooks directly related to Media Education most used in Education and Communication,. The report has been developed based on six educational competence dimensions: language, technology, interaction processes, production and distribution processes, ideology and values and aesthetics. Using each of these parameters the scope of the analysis and the scope of the expression were taken into account, based on guidelines set by Ferrés and Piscitelli in their well-known proposal of indicators for defining new media competence and which is structured around two areas of work: the production of own messages and interaction with others. The results were obtained by applying a quantitative methodology through a content analysis of semantic fields. The main conclusions point to a greater presence of the «Ideology and Values» dimension, and almost non-existent representation of the «Aesthetics» indicator.

Article investigated the grading of teaching values and its relation to the rating performance of the teachers. For this purpose, 27 EFL teachers were randomly chosen from Bina Nusantara University. Some teachers taught only English Department students and some others taught students of other Departments, for example Computer Science, Marketing Communication, Management, Visual Communication Design and Chinese Department. They were asked to grade twelve values in their teaching according to the order of importance and to answer a set of questions on those values. Besides, their students filled in a questionnaire with the aim of evaluating the teachers’ performance from September 2008 until June 2010 (three semesters). The results of the study suggest that there is a change in the teaching-value grading along with teaching experience. However, there is no relationship between teaching values and getting high/low rating performance, the reason of which is not dealt with in the study. Expertise, Enthusiasm, Reliability and Attentiveness were teaching values selected as most important for the EFL teachers. Moreover, most teachers were graded higher in their soft skills rather than hard skills, especially in giving the students an opportunity to ask questions and to have a discussion during the teaching and learning process. Finally, when teachers taught small and big classes, surprisingly most of them got higher rating performance from their students of big classes, for both their hard and soft skills.

Abstract:
One of the recent aims and objectives of Qawmi madrasa education is to make the madrasa students adequately proficient in English to participate in the competitive sectors of Bangladesh for better career options. Though they consider English as an international language of communication and higher education, they pay very little attention to this language teaching and learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, the present study tried to explore how the 4 macro-skills of the English language are taught in Qawmi madrasas under the BEFAQ board and what challenges the teachers and the students encounter in teaching-learning situations. Analyzing the questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations, it was found that only reading and writing skills are focused in the syllabus, textbooks, classroom, and testing; whereas listening and speaking skills are either informally practiced very little or avoided from all arenas. Consequently, language learners cannot achieve communicative competence in English. Finally, the researcher attempts to put forward some recommendations regarding the English syllabus, textbook contents, teaching method, and testing system to the Qawmi madrasa board and authority, madrasa teachers, and Bangladesh government for facing the challenges and making the students proficient in all basic skills of English language.

Abstract:
Currently, many different approaches to higher education are being discussed with the requirements of the educational authorities. The importance and necessity of meeting the educational needs of the population, ensuring access to quality education and integrating education and science and technology are usually emphasised. Purpose of the study: to identify the specific features of the use of electronic textbooks (interactive publications) for teaching a foreign language on different online platforms in a distance learning environment. A systematic review can be explained as a research method and process for identifying and critically evaluating relevant studies and for collecting and analysing data from identified studies. Educational materials need to be used on time and the spot. The Pinboard method can be used to increase the efficiency of the lesson. The word "pinboard" comes from the English language and means "pinboard backing", "pin board". The essence of this teaching method is that discussion and learning dialogue are connected practically. Its strengths are its developmental and educational functions. Students will develop a culture of communication and discussion, the ability to express themselves not only orally, but also in writing, and the ability to think logically and systematically.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impacts of teaching style, English language and communication and assessment methods on the academic performance of undergraduate business students in introductory quantitative courses such as Statistics for Business 1 and 2, Quantitative Methods for Business, Operations and Production Management and Operations Research in a non-Western setting. Design/methodology/approach Data was collected from 750 undergraduate business students in third- and fourth-year classes at the UAE University (UAEU). Descriptive statistics were used to gain some insights into the demographic and educational characteristics of respondents and their opinions regarding the importance of the three factors of concern to their understanding of quantitative courses material, along with multiple regression analysis that was used to test the hypotheses of the study. Findings The results of the present study indicate the importance of the teaching style in terms of the way the lecturer speaks and the pace of presenting the material, in addition to the structure of the lecture in understanding quantitative course material. Additionally, availability and contents of the material on the course website play an important role in helping undergraduate business students understand the subjects of quantitative courses. The study revealed that the UAEU undergraduate business students are, to some extent, uncomfortable in reading printed textbooks and writing reports on quantitative topics in English. The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that both teaching style and English language and communication have a great influence on the academic performance of UAEU undergraduate business students. Research limitations/implications The paper has a number of limitations. For instance, the sample was taken only from students in a single university. Moreover, this study focuses on the business students and in turn, it excludes students of other colleges. On the other hand, it has a number of implications for administrators, instructors and researchers. Administrators should pay special attention when setting admission standards. Instructors teaching quantitative courses should prepare well-structured lectures and deliver them at a reasonable pace to allow students the time to understand them. Abstract:
The current characteristics of learning mathematics are more focused on procedural abilities, one-way communication, monotonous class settings, low-order thinking skills, depending on textbooks, more dominant routine questions, and low-level questions. Teachers rarely give high-order thinking skills to students in learning mathematics, so students are given non-routine questions, and questions that require critical and creative solutions, students have difficulty solving them. To overcome this, this study used a generative learning model. Learning with this model has succeeded in increasing student mathematics learning outcomes. The specific objective of this research is to develop generative learning tools to improve the high-level mathematical thinking skills of junior high school students. This research is product development research in the form of generative learning tools to improve higher-level mathematical thinking skills to be used in junior high schools. There are three learning tools developed, namely teaching materials, student worksheets, and learning implementation plans, which will be used in the teaching and learning process. The development of this learning device refers to the general teaching material development model of Tjeerd Plomp (1997) which consists of several phases, namely: (1) initial investigation phase; (2) design phase; (3) realization; and (4) test, evaluation, and revision phases. From the research conducted, it was found that the creative learning model developed in this study met the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness

Abstract:
The article observes modern trends in the development of foreign language education in a nonlinguistic university, using as an example the English Department for Science Students, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University. Nonlinguistic university graduates need a fairly high level of foreign language communicative competence to be competitive in the modern labor market, which determines an everincreasing attention to teaching LSP (Language for Specifc Purposes). In 2001, the English Department for Science Students participated in the Russian-British project RESPONSE (Russian Education Support Project on Specialist English) aiming at a largescale study of the current state of teaching English for specifc purposes in Russian universities. Its fndings provide the baseline that serves a useful starting point for evaluation and monitoring the changes that have occurred in this area over the past twenty years. The main trend is the change of teaching methods and approaches: from the grammar-translation method inherited from the Soviet higher school to computer assisted language learning (CALL), communicative and competence approaches today. Active integration of information and communication technologies in the educational process makes it possible to form and develop the university's electronic information and educational environment. The MSU educational platform “University without borders” is based on Moodle LMS and used for distance teaching and learning. It ofers online educational materials, electronic textbooks and courses, for both degree programmes and supplementary education. The main digital tools that lecturers use to teach and supervise students' self-study are listed. The paper considers such areas of the work of the English Department for Science Students as development and application of interactive teaching methods and technologies; implementation of alternative forms of control, e. g. performing the fnal bachelor ESP assessment in the format of B2 CEFR exams or conducting an interfaculty scientifc student conference in English at the master's level; designing a professional development course in academic English for earth and life scientists; establishing an electronic library; compiling specialized corpora of medical and biological scientifc texts; promotion of multilingualism and multiculturalism.

Abstract:
The article characterizes methodical approaches to the study of the topic "Ukrainian terminology in professional communication" in the preparing of future lawyers, which consists in conducting a binary class by specialists in Ukrainian language and in law. Definitions of the concepts "binary class", "interdisciplinary connections", "interdisciplinary integration", "competence", "professional preparing", "activation of cognitive activity" are given. The updating of the topic is due to the recognition of the position that, in the opinion of the authors, only the theoretical and practical course "Ukrainian language and speech culture" is insufficient. An attempt at a binary examination of legal terminology with teachers of legal disciplines leads to preliminary conclusions about the involvement of the law experts, representatives of the chosen specialty in the educational process with the aim of popularizing the chosen profession. The problems which prompt a law student to introduce terminology into his conceptual, terminological-scientific circulation are currently important. On the one hand, the more motivated the student of higher education is to expand his linguistic competences, the higher the level of language proficiency; on the other hand, they form the foundation for professional development and expand the horizons of the branch legal orientation of future lawyers. And accordingly, the speech and psychological "barriers" of the communication component of the binary class disappear, the desire to master the terminology, to improve one's knowledge, abilities and skills from the course and disciplines of the study of branch law, using methodological and didactic documentation, educational textbooks, manuals, dictionaries, glossaries, etc. has been noticed. Only in the creative cooperation of students and teachers of the Ukrainian language and special disciplines of law can high results be achieved during a binary class, even in the conditions of distance learning. The experience of teaching the Ukrainian language in a professional direction allows, on the basis of constant observations, mastering the latest developments in the field of education and efforts to improve the level of students' knowledge, to improve the method of teaching the discipline. The proposed study is a description of the experience of studying Ukrainian law terminology as an alternative to solving these problems – an attempt at a binary format of classes.

Abstract:
The study focuses on improving higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in mathematics students using a Desmos-assisted planar analytic geometry course. Analytic geometry, which is essential for understanding geometric properties using analytic methods, requires students to develop problem-solving, analysis, assessment, and creativity abilities. However, current educational practices fall short of acquiring these abilities due to insufficient instructional techniques, textbooks, and a lack of integration with information and communication technologies. To address these shortcomings, the study proposes a Desmos-assisted textbook meant to increase students' HOTS through the use of interactive Desmos platform tools such as graphic depiction, experimentation, simulation, and collaborative learning. The textbook development followed the PLOMP model, which included preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment phases, ensuring the textbook's validity and practicality through reiterated evaluations. The findings show that the textbook is highly valid and practical for instructional purposes, improving students' knowledge of mathematical concepts and ability to engage in HOTS processes. Despite some difficulties with HOTS-related practice questions, generally student feedback was positive, emphasizing the textbook's function in supporting a deeper understanding of analytic geometry and encouraging problem-solving skills. The study indicates that integrating technology such as Desmos into mathematics education can greatly contribute to the development of students' HOTS, and recommends its use in teaching techniques as well as additional research on its implementation in educational contexts.

Expansion of international relations in science and the world is one of the main manifestations of Ukraine's integration into the world of information space, impossible without a language that has long become international - the English language. A significant number of modern scholars actively study the features of methods of training foreign students, including in the direction of physics and mathematics. However, attention is not paid to the study of specific features of teaching these disciplines to foreign students. Problemrequirements of Ukrainian higher education, with their status as a foreigner in Ukraine, with the features of age psychology, with their national-psychological peculiarities. The purpose of teaching physical and mathematical disciplines, in particular, medical and biological physics, of course, should be the close connection between a physical phenomenon or a process with its application in medicine for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. To facilitate perception and understanding of physical phenomena or processes, it is expedient to use demonstration physical models, to perform laboratory work with the processing of measurement results and to formulate conclusions. Particularly important for foreign students is the availability of English-language textbooks that correspond to the curriculum of the discipline according to the number of academic hours covering topics from lectures and practical classes. Due to the constant increase in the number of foreign students studying in English, the necessary condition is to provide a well-prepared teaching and learning material that would cover the theoretical foundations and practical skills in discipline, in particular, the physical and mathematical direction, and ensure close communication with it, with future professional activities of students.s of foreign students at the adaptation stage are related to the new

Abstract:
The integration of information communication and technology in medical education has led to the emergence of modern instructional tools, thus transforming pedagogy. Modern instructional tools like 3D animation are very effective tools for pedagogy, especially in subjects that involve complex concepts that are difficult to represent with traditional instructional tools such as textbooks, and lectures. The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using 3D animation in teaching psychiatry to clinical medicine students at the Kenya Medical Training College. The study used a randomized comparative design, where participants were randomly assigned to either a treatment group (3D animation) or a control group (textbook). Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. The study targeted 61 respondents, and the sample size was 53 respondents (11 lecturers and 42 students). A pilot test to ensure the reliability and validity of the questionnaires was done on 30 respondents from the nursing department at Kenya Medical Training College. The analysis of the results was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 29, whereby descriptive statistics were used to describe feedback from the lecturers and students while independent sample t-tests were used to determine the statistically significant difference in student scores. The t-test results showed a statistically significant difference in means between the two groups, with t (40) = -7.332, p < 0.001 (two-tailed). The mean difference between the two groups was -8.190, with a standard error of 1.117. The 95% confidence interval of the difference ranged from -10.448 to -5.933. Therefore, the use of 3D animation had a statistically significant positive effect on test scores compared to textbook instructional materials in the context of teaching psychiatry. Abstract:
In the process of learning a foreign/second language, students should learn spoken/colloquial language in addition to formal language. This is important for successful communication in a reallife situation. Spoken/informal language occupies a significant part of everyday communication. Moreover, colloquial language and face to face interaction represent the essential aspects in both learning and teaching process and plays an important role in terms of linguistic and cognitive development of learner (Hinkel, 2006). According to Engkent, students “are wellequipped if they can handle a basic formal! informal distinction and understand the principles of register use” (Engkent; 1986). Georgian as a second language teaching resource does not include materials discussing this part of the language. As a result, language learners do not have the appropriate skills and knowledge to select the correct forms and expressions, taking into account the quality of language formality and the actual communication situation, speaking, as well as obstacles in understanding the information received in everyday speech, which also requires specific knowledge. The aim of the article is to study the situation in Georgian higher education, to identify the level of students' knowledge and learning activities and approaches, and to develop relevant recommendationsto address the above-mentioned problem. The research was conducted on the basis of Georgian higher education institutions, foreign students who speak Georgian as a foreign language took part in the research. Finally, 35 students of different nationalities participated in the study. The paper is mainly based on qualitative research. In addition, the interview method was used in the study; informants were 35 students who completed the questionnaires with open-ended and closed- ended questions. The observation method was also used in the research. We looked at the components of teaching speaking and reading. We conducted an experiment during the research process. Students were given a text with the same content in formal and informal style to read. In addition, we offered them the task of participating in a conversation situation on the same topic in a different context in terms of formality/language register and the results in both activities were observed. The study involved a relatively small focus group, which prevents a more in-depth and generalized picture from being displayed and the results obtained. Observations of the lesson process have shown that students understand the formal text more easily than informal style language. Even when the teacher provides spoken language forms, students find it difficult to comprehend such material. This is due to the fact that spoken language learning activities are more spontaneous, less systematic and do not reinforce such knowledge in the audience. Student surveys and questionnaires completed by them revealed the following: At a certain level of language proficiency they find it relatively easy to learn information from university-created texts in literary language, but in everyday situations, it is difficult to establish successful communication and comprehend information due to ignorance of spoken forms. In addition, such activities are less covered in the curriculum as well as in the textbooks and in thisregard, the experience of both teachers and students is relatively scarce. The experiment revealed that students understand the text of a formal genre more easily and correctly than spoken, informal information. The same goes for building a talking situation. In order for the student to realize the similarities and differences between formal and informal languages, it is necessary to carry out a variety of activities in the learning environment, including 1. Identify formal and informal distinguishing marks, which is achieved by reading, processing and comparing different texts according to different levels, genres and formality levels. 2. Use of lexical activities: Identify lexical items (slang, language contractions, acronyms, etc.) in texts, create a dictionary and perform relevant exercises. 3. Conversational activities on different topics: The teacher presents and discusses a particular form with a student, after which the students build the spoken situation in different language registers and make a presentation through role-playing games. 4. Use of authentic recordings and multimedia to master natural, informal language forms and structures.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to assess practical aspects of implementation of institutional repositories (IRs) in Africa with reference to the University of Nairobi and provide useful guidelines to the issues and lessons learned to the other practitioners. Design/methodology/approach – The study used cross-sectional descriptive survey design to gather and analyze data that was both qualitative and quantitative in nature. In addition, questionnaires, interview schedule and observation guide were utilized to collect data from the respondents. Findings – First, the study established that the IR has not been well integrated into mainstream information services of the library. Second, there is lack of awareness on the use of IR as an information resource on the part of students and staff. Third, there is need to integrate different forms of information into the IR including graphics, video and sound to carter for the whole population of users even those with disabilities. Finally, there is need for aggressive or serious rebranding, marketing and promotion of the IR. Research limitations/implications – IRs are vital sources of information that are increasingly being integrated and utilized in African higher education. Discussion of the University of Nairobi as a case study provides practical lessons, implications and home grown solutions for other institutions of higher learning in the African context. Practical implications – IR is not only contemporary or emerging source of knowledge, information and communication but also fundamental or basic in institutions of higher learning. Consequently, IR provides excellent opportunities for universities to expand knowledge beyond internal and external learning environments. Social implications – Being fundamental sources of knowledge, IRs provide and support teaching, learning, research activities, scholarly communications and community services in universities and the society at large. As information and communication hubs, IRs have reinvented the image and role of universities as sources of knowledge in the society. Originality/value – Universities need to embrace IRs as vital and valid sources of knowledge and learning. Developing IRs without aggressive rebranding, marketing and promotional strategies is not enough for universities, associated institutions plus the information staff, but with prove that the resources are being utilized to achieve organizational goals and objectives.

Abstract:
The development of all spheres of public life is associated with the optimization of information processes (collection, storage, processing, transmission of information), so modern society is called information. Modern information and communication technologies play an important role in teaching a foreign language in non-philological higher education institutions. The organization of education using electronic tools allows significant deepening the professional knowledge and optimizing the educational process for students. Modern lexicography has significantly expanded and strengthened its tools with computer technology for creating and using dictionaries. Special programs (databases, computer files, word processing programs) let us automatically generate dictionary entries, store dictionary information and process it. The purpose of the study is to reveal the specifics of computer lexicography use for training managers in a modern agricultural university. To achieve this goal, a set of methods was used: theoretical: comparison and generalization (study of the degree of scientific development of the term “computer lexicography”), analysis, synthesis and generalization of psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature, theoretical forecasting and modeling of computer lexicography to determine scientific bases of the researched problem; empirical: diagnostic methods (interviews, interviews with teachers, questionnaires, analysis of products of professional activity of teachers, which provide philological disciplines in teaching the agricultural managers). The analysis of the problem showed its insufficient representation in modern scientific works. The article characterizes the role of disciplines of the philological cycle in the professional training of higher education students majoring in “Management”; the term “computer lexicography” is defined and its typology is singled out; the conditions for the introduction of computer lexicography in the educational process of agricultural universities are determined; analyzed software for the introduction of elements of computer lexicography in training the marketing specialists in agricultural universities; the positive and negative aspects of the use of computer lexicography as a component of education are revealed. The article for the first time revealed the specifics of the use of computer lexicography in teaching the philological disciplines for the specialty “Management” at the universities in the agricultural sector. The variety of trends in the introduction of computer lexicography at all stages of teaching the discipline is obvious, and, in particular, the variety of approaches to the creation of electronic dictionaries of different types. The obtained results allow deepening the knowledge of future specialists in the field of management, expanding the interests of higher education seekers, simplifying the work of students with special terminology, systematizing the acquired knowledge, improving the quality of philological disciplines through the introduction of information and communication technologies.

Abstract:
Active learning is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of higher education's teaching-learning paradigm. In this context, educators serve as facilitators, empowering students to take the lead and assume co-responsibility for their learning. Among the array of active learning strategies available, the portfolio stands out as an instrument that not only aids in knowledge construction but also fosters the development of crucial skills like autonomy and creativity. Furthermore, it serves as an interactive and participatory learning approach that encourages self-assessment and reflection on the teaching-learning journey. Portfolios, through the continual (re)construction of knowledge and ongoing collaborative engagement between students and educators, promote self-regulated learning by progressively fostering students' awareness of their learning process. This study reflects on the pedagogical application of individual portfolios, aiming to explore their role in enhancing writing skills within a digital context and nurturing cross-disciplinary skills highly valued by employers. Specifically, it delves into students' perceptions of the portfolio construction process within the Internet Writing course, a segment of the Master's degree program in Marketing and Digital Communication at the University of Aveiro (Portugal). After a brief examination of active learning strategies, with a specific emphasis on portfolios as tools for self-reflection and learning, the study analyzes questionnaire survey results utilizing SPSS software. The survey was administered to students enrolled in the course to assess the effectiveness of the applied teaching strategy. Lastly, based on the findings, this work identifies potential limitations and suggests strategies for improvement in future implementations.

Abstract:
The article defines tasks and outlines approaches and ways to implement a short-term Ukrainian language course for foreign students of a preparatory department using a course developed by the teachers of the Language Training Department of International Education Institute for Study and Research of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University as an example. After the adoption of English as a medium of instruction at Ukrainian higher institutions, those international students of preparatory departments who do not have the appropriate language level have to learn two languages, i.e. English as a medium of instruction, and Ukrainian as the host country’s state language, which is crucial for functioning in the social and cultural environment. A limited amount of classroom time for learning Ukrainian makes it a challenge for teachers and methodologists. The core task is to develop a short-term course that would contain all the main structures of the Ukrainian language. In addition, there is an objective to build a communication competence sufficient to help the students adapt to a new social and cultural environment while studying in Ukraine. As a result, the students should master the Ukrainian language at the A2 level, which corresponds to the “basic user of the language”. The article includes the initial language proficiency level requirements according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as well as the standards of Ukrainian as a foreign language at the A2 level. The authors also highlight how communicative methodology combines a structural approach and deductive, inductive, implicit, and interactive teaching methodologies. There is a conclusion on the relevance and advisability of such methodologies for the short-term Ukrainian language course for international students. The paper contains an analysis of the structure and content of the textbook “Learning Ukrainian” by V. Komarova, T. Laguta, and I. Sukhova based on the developed course materials. The book stands out among the other textbooks of Ukrainian for international students due to its condensed form and scrupulous selection of educational content. Moreover, the textbook corresponds to the needs of future international students who will be getting higher education in English at higher education institutions in Ukraine by forming communicative competence in Ukrainian. The authors examine the approaches and methods of teaching that correspond to the purpose and features of teaching a short-term course. The article showcases the communicative approach as the most widespread language educational method while studying any foreign language, and the Ukrainian language in particular.

Abstract:
The current stage of development of Ukraine's international relations with other countries requires a revision of the foreign language teaching process in higher school. Special emphasis should be paid to the effectiveness of foreign language learning. The expansion of international contacts highlights the need for training a specialist who can communicate with representatives of other countries not only at the domestic level, but also in professional activities. First of all, this concerns specialists in those professions in which there is intercultural communication (international internships, participation in international conferences). The English learning process of many Ukrainian medical colleges and universities is mainly based on non-authentic materials. Few studies have been conducted to explore the implications of authentic and non-authentic materials in learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP), for medicine in particular. The current study explores students’ perception of these resources in learning medical English. In order to optimize the learning process, a comparative analysis of English language manuals for medical professionals was made. The data were obtained on the basis of a questionnaire filled out by medical students of two universities. The students were required to assess different aspects of both authentic and non-authentic materials. The ultimate goal of the analysis is to determine the educational efficiency of the afore-mentioned textbooks and the students’ motivation for English learning. Analyzing the effectiveness of training future medical specialists for professional communication, the following methods were used: descriptive, statistical and empirical methods: observation, testing, and questionnaires. The findings showed that the participants had positive attitudes toward using authentic resources and that they preferred them to non-authentic ones. Authentic resources provide a beneficial effect on the development of students’ language skills in their professional area. The prospects of further studying in the in-depth analysis of different ways of optimizing English language proficiency.

Abstract:
The modern visually-oriented world is the world of real and virtual possibilities due to the application of information technologies. Therefore, television and the Internet are used not only for entertainment but also for educational purposes in all the spheres of human activity including education. In didactics, audiovisuals play an important role in mastering foreign languages. The appropriateness of their use in the educational process is stipulated by their implementation facilitating all general didactic learning principles – activity, consciousness, consistency, and visualization as well. Audio and video materials are aimed at improving the perception efficiency of the program material, checking the level of its assimilation, and mastering the abilities and practical skills for application of the acquired knowledge. The aim of our analysis was an attempt to define the most basic principles for the formation of competence in a foreign language in students from non-language institutions of higher education based on the use of audiovisual teaching aids. During the study, the authors conducted an analysis and synthesis of the best pedagogical practice, generalized their observations, and experimentally verified the validity of using audiovisual teaching aids in the formation of foreign language competence of foreign students of the preparatory department and the main stage of training (1st-4th year students), and 1st-2nd year Ukrainian students of Vinnytsia National Technical University. The article clarifies the concept of foreign language competence. There have been analyzed the main methods of forming students’ foreign language competence based on the use of audio and video materials (phonetic recordings, texts recordings, audio lessons, podcasts, video clips, video films, electronic textbooks, online dictionaries, video conferences, virtual seminars, telecommunication projects). The authors have substantiated theoretically and tested experimentally the effectiveness of the use of audiovisual teaching aids and their influence on the formation of speech competence among Ukrainian and foreign students. They have proved that while using audiovisuals in the classroom one should take into account the cognitive patterns of students’ learning activities, and their readiness to perceive and assimilate the learning material. It is also important to ensure an organic combination of specific audiovisuals with the teacher’s professional skills. The creation of the foreign language communicative environment will help both optimize the training of future engineers of foreign language professional communication, and also form their professional communicative competence.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to bring together the findings of two studies investigating the value of academic libraries to teaching and research staff in higher education institutions. The Working Together (WT) project was an international study, funded by SAGE Publishing, investigating the value of academic libraries for teaching and research staff in the USA, UK and Scandinavia. The Raising Academic Impact (RAI) project was an initiative of the University of Nottingham (UoN) aimed at increasing the impact of academic librarians in departments across the university by assessing perception and awareness of current library services and future needs of academic staff. Design/methodology/approach – The WT project was conducted during Spring 2012, comprising a series of eight case studies and an online survey exploring the case study experiences and findings within their wider regional and academic context. One was conducted at the UoN, and included the RAI project. The RAI project was originally a four-phase initiative conducted by academic librarians at the UoN. The first phase, which is reported in this paper, consisted of a survey of teaching and research staff, distributed in summer 2012, investigating awareness, uptake and value of existing services, as well as demand for new library services. Findings – Determining the value of academic libraries is a challenging task as very little evidence (beyond the anecdotal) is collected. Perceptions of library value vary greatly between what librarians think the value of their library is to academic staff and how academic staff actually value their library. Information literacy and study skills teaching are greatly valued by academic staff. Despite current efforts, research support is still limited, owing to a cultural barrier hampering greater collaboration between libraries and academic staff in this area. Communication and marketing are keys to increase the value of academic libraries to teaching and research staff. Originality/value – This paper presents the key findings from the two studies in parallel. It is anticipated that these discoveries will be of interest to the wider library community to help libraries develop services which are closely linked to the needs of teaching and academic staff.

Abstract:
Most of the pupils who go to school speak the language version they have learned at home and only during the teaching process acquire the standard version of the spoken language. That is why it is extremely important that any negative, unpleasant experience should not be connected to the primary language version, as the only basis, building onwhich, mother tongue teaching can be effective. In our study, based on the data from a repeated questionnaire collection, we would like to illustrate what do the teachers of the Transcarpathian secondary schools with the Hungarian language of instruction think about the non-standard versions and theirs speakers. In 2008, 150 teachers responded to the questions about a language and dialect attitude, and in 2018, the same questionnaire was completed by 100 colleagues online or on paper basis. In the study, we used the SPSS statistical processing program, so it turns out whether there has been a significant change in the perception of dialects in the last 10 years in the studied community. After all, the teaching of Hungarian as a mother tongue was reformed during this period, and the curriculum also gave priority to the issue of mother tongue’ version and communication competence. Based on the partial results of the repeated study, we can state that in the past 10 years the opinion of Transcarpathian teachers of secondary schools with the Hungarian language of instruction has changed in a positive direction. There was a higher proportion of responses suggesting an additive approach mediated by the formal curriculum than in 2008. Nevertheless, the explanatory answers received in addition to the more positive statistics still show a trace of the previous approach: the linguistic and dialectal consciousness of the majority of the respondents is far from definite and confident. There are a number of stereotypes in seemingly benign but rather forgiving writings that take longer to undress. However, it is clear that the reform of mother tongue education has an impact, even a positive one. In order to be even more effective, the mother-tongue education in Transcarpathia must follow this way. Therefore, it is important that teachers who teach in both Ukrainian and minority languages show a definite and objective attitude towards their pupils in addition to/despite the changing mother tongue curricula and inconsistent textbooks that do not meet local needs.
