Full textOn radar level gauges currently shipped by Saab Rosemount, some adjustments of the unit's parameters has to be performed in the field. Presently, this is a cumbersome procedure; the operator has to be very close to the gauge and he either has to carry with him a bulky configuration unit or use a basic control unit on the gauge. A wireless solution, where a portable device and a receiver replace the control unit, would both allow the operator to work from a distance and eliminate the need for the bulky device.
The most conspicuous restraint for such a solution is a very low allowed power dissipation. The reason for this is that some gauges do not have a separate power supply, but are fed directly off the communication bus. A viable solution should also be commercially available and robust enough to operate in an industrial environment.
To meet these requirements both a theoretical and a practical assessment was conducted, where the two techniques for wireless communication, IrDA, and Bluetooth, was given special consideration. As for the portable device, the market for hand-held computers was investigated and ultimately a PDA from Palm was selected for this project. Together with this PDA, a prototype for each of the two wireless techniques was tested to ascertain their performance with respect to power dissipation, communication range, and communication robustness.
This investigation revealed that Bluetooth could be used over a much greater distance than IrDA and it did also provide a more robust solution overall. IrDA is nonetheless also a competent technique, and has its primary advantage in terms of much lower power dissipation compared to Bluetooth.

The quantitative data gathered from the questionnaires were analysed by conducting t-tests, ANOVA tests and chi-square tests. The qualitative data gathered fro the open-ended questions in the questionnaires and the interviews were analysed by content analysis by the researcher. The results of the study revealed that the participants were satisfied with the course. Most of the objectives of the course were considered as important by most for the participants. As regard the materials, although there were some complaints about some parts of the textbook, it was considered as effective as a whole. The type of materials that were rated the lowest were CDs and videos. As for the assessment, it was revealed by the results that there were some problems regarding standardization in the department, and the breakdown of points. In addition to these, some instructors also complained that the time allotted to the components of this lesson was not sufficient.

Full textThe communication application domain has recently experienced some great changes. This shift has led researchers to follow a new evaluation paradigm, based on the user experience. This trend differs fundamentally from its predecessors by its holistic, subjective and positive nature. Many measurement methods have been developed to assess the user experience, but remain immature and even contradictory. Moreover, the basic nature of the user experience has led to the loss of reliability in the exercise of its measurement. This is why studies should be conducted in order to increase the validity and reliability of this new approach. The main aim of this research is to use several methods and to combine and articulate them using various techniques to improve the measurement quality. These studies was based on a broad spectrum of indicators (physiological, behavioral and self-reported) and two triangulation strategies in particular: multi-faceted and multi-measures. Finally, these methods were tested in real applied cases and under an increasing procedure complexity and statistical processing. This research has resulted in three separate studies. The first aims to evaluate the relevance of a movie recommendation algorithm against its competitor using a multifaceted evaluation strategy. A second study was designed to test the relevance of a multi-measures evaluation model by assessing the usability of university sites based on a remote user testing software (Evalyzer) and a multimodal combination of various indicators of usability. A final study was conducted to validate multi-measures immersion protocol (questionnaire, facial expression, skin conductance, heart rate, eye behavior). These three studies have highlighted the relevance of numerous measures (of usability and user experience), the added value of some of their combinations, as well as a critical return to the multi-facet validation procedure used in this thesis

This thesis documents the testing of a prototype of a smartphone to be used by roadway workers and dispatchers that was based in a wireless data link service. The main purpose of using a smartphone in railroad communications is to eliminate errors due to radio and pronunciation deficiencies. Previous studies analyzed the communication environment of the dispatcher in order to address questions based upon data link becoming a means for sending and receiving information in railroad operations. These studies have examined what kind of information is appropriate for each medium (voice and visual), and by what criteria a dispatcher will select which communication medium. Building on these studies, this work presents a comparison between a radio and data link mediums for a long communication of a characteristic type: assignment of a form D. This thesis reports on the on site testing of the data link system which proved to be useful and efficient in certain aspects of railroad applications. The new system was faster and more effective than the radio communication when used to convey long messages such as filling out Form Ds. The radio communication was faster than the datalink for confirmation communications that only require yes/no answers. One reason for this difference appears to be the users' unfamiliarity with the device. The time to convey short messages could also be reduced after the users become more proficient with the new system. The document also includes an analysis of the regulatory challenges that the new system would bring. A list or recommendations for the new regulations are presented at the end of the report.

Full textThe adoption of best practice methodologies within Information Communication Technology (ICT) departments, are on the increase in order to bring about quality in their day-to-day activities. Computer and Telecommunication Services (CTS) is the ICT department within Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and is in no way exempted from this. CTS adopted ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) as an Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) best practice framework for service support and service delivery.CTS implemented a Service Desk function, Incident Management process, Change Management process, Information Technology Service Continuity process, and elements of other ITSM process. ICT organisations adopt an ad hoc approach in applying continuous process improvement mechanisms in the day-to-day operation of service support and service delivery processes and functions resulting in poor service support and service delivery. The primary research objectives are to identify the best practice principles and guidelines (i.e. IT, Quality, Project Management, etc.) adopted by CTS, to assist in establishing the gaps between the current status of these processes and the desired state. Further, to determine the elements or component parts of the proposed continuous process improvement mechanisms, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the implementation of such mechanisms, and to define metrics for proving measurable improvements to the processes. The adoption of continuous process improvement mechanisms will assist in mapping ITSM with other best practice methodologies (i.e. Quality and Project Management). A qualitative method will be used to review the existing processes and/or functions and highlight evidence of adherence to best practice methodologies. A quantitative method will be used to collect data from the CTS Service Desk and to conduct user surveys to determine current levels of service. These results will underline the elements and component parts needed for continuous process improvement.

Questions regarding the concept of legitimacy are central to social and political science. Exploring how people justify legitimacy and why people grant legitimacy to leadership and collective decisions in groups, organizations, and nations is generally agreed to be essential to scholarship on legitimacy. One line of research finds contributing factors in bureaucratic effectiveness and efficiency that can provide substantive benefits to people. Another line of research expands legitimacy to procedural elements such as fairness of treatment or quality of communication (deliberation) in the decision making process. This dissertation intends to contribute to the research of legitimacy and hopes to further the understanding of communication's role in decision outcome legitimacy by incorporating two sets of contributing factors: Performance factors and communication factors. This will enable a side-by-side comparison of instrumentalist and communicative factors in predicting legitimation. In addition, the study will observe the quality of the communication environment as a contextual variable upon which the relationship between performance elements and decision outcome legitimacy depends. Specifically, how the communication environment moderates the strength of the relationship between output of public service in a certain domain and the perceived legitimacy of the decision made in the same domain will be observed. Drawing on the framework from Habermas's theory of communicative action and the public sphere, the literature on deliberative democracy, and organizational studies, the project intends to observe how the communication environment or speech conditions (in Habermasian terms) may affect the legitimacy of a decision outcome, and at the same time may influence the relationship between the perceived performance in a certain public service sector and the perceived legitimacy of a decision outcome in the same sector. Using a sample of 255 adult residents in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwest China, the study found that perceived government performance and perceived speech conditions were both positively related to perceived legitimacy of government decision; furthermore, perceived speech conditions moderated the relationship between the performance evaluation and legitimacy perception. These findings suggest some important insights into the role of communication in political legitimation and the evolving communication expectations in China.

Full textAs the Navy has refocused its goals towards littoral warfare, mine countermeasures have become an area of special interest. The Naval Postgraduate School is developing an autonomous underwater vehicle to map shallow water minefields--a vital role in the Navy's overall plan for mine countermeasures. A key feature of the vehicle is its low cost, and to this end it uses a commercially available system called 'DiveTracker' for precise acoustic navigation and communication. This research experimentally evaluated the reliability of the DiveTracker communication system in conditions approximating those for which the vehicle is designed. It was concluded that highly reliable communication of short commands will be restricted to relatively short separation distances between nodes. The very shallow water acoustic channel is highly variant in both signal attenuation and background noise levels. The maximum range is limited by the background noise while the probability of correct message reception depends on the received signal to noise ratio. Initial data indicates that the low cost unit under development cannot communicate beyond 500 meters with a probability of a single roundtrip success greater than 34 percent. Several options are available for its improvement.

Underwater acoustic communication is an extremely complex field that faces many challenges due to the time-varying nature of the ocean environment. Vector sensors are a proven technology that when utilizing their directional sensing capabilities allows us to minimize the effect of interfering noise sources. A traditional pressure sensor array has been the standard for years but suffers at degraded signal to noise ratios (SNR) and requires maneuvers or a lengthly array aperture to direction find. This thesis explores the effect of utilizing a vector sensor array to steer to the direction of signal arrival and the effect it has on equalization of the signal at degraded SNRs. It was demonstrated that utilizing a single vector sensor we were able steer to the direction of arrival and improve the ability of an equalizer to determine the transmitted signal. This improvement was most prominent when the SNR was degraded to levels of 0 and 10 dB where the performance of the vector sensor outperformed that of the pressure sensor in nearly 100% of cases. Finally, this performance improvement occurred with a savings in computational expense.
