Ahern, Sara E. "Transparency in Assessment through Web-Based Communication: A Study of Changes in Communication About Assessment and Teachers' Perceptions of Assessment and Student Motivation for Learning." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/630.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Irwin Blumer
Public and private schools are adopting new technological software to manage student information in a web-based format. These programs have the capability to provide students and parents with on-line access to grades and higher quality assessment information with the hope that students take information about their grades and use it formatively to improve in the classroom. Teachers, however, have historically kept their grade books private and increasing transparency into grading represents a major change in teachers' communication of student achievement. This qualitative case study examines the impact of increasing transparency in assessment by providing parents and students access to web-based grading information on teachers' perceptions of the quality and effectiveness of communication with parents and students, teachers' perceptions of student motivation, teachers' application of the program, and teachers' perceptions of their communication with each other. Seven teachers participated in this research study over the course of one semester at a large, suburban New England high school. The data from this study showed that increasing transparency in assessment to students and parents resulted in changes in the nature and substance of communication between teachers, parents and students. Teachers reported changing their use of the program over the course of the semester in order to provide greater clarity of assessment data to students and parents and, as a result, students were able to use it formatively to improve student learning. Teachers reported that the greatest impact of this program was in improved communication with students leading to increased student effort and a sense of student ownership over grades. Teachers also felt that increasing transparency in assessment influenced communication and collaboration among teachers. The findings of this research study provide implications for educational practice, policy, future research and leadership

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the legal, social, technological, and cultural environment that gave rise to Google's library partnership program in order to propose an institutional corrective to Google's project to digitize cultural heritage. Interview research done with those actively involved with Google's project revealed the need for a history of the present. The class action settlement proposed sweeping changes to copyright warranting a quick response by a community of scholars seeking to advance a balanced vision of Anglo-American copyright, one where the public benefit to use and appropriate works is weighted alongside private incentives to create. The process created the conditions for institutional renewal in the public sphere through the creation of a Digital Public Library of America. By combining archival, critical legal, and interview research methods, this dissertation provides a narrative that is both analytical and deeply contextual. Google's digitization partnership in France is contrasted with its library partners program in the United States, examining Google's work in light of competing visions of intellectual property within a trans-Atlantic context.

Leach, Karen Dupree. "Aggression in Popular Children's Picture Books: A Content Analysis." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4102.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to assess children's exposure to aggression through popular children's picture books. Little research has been performed regarding aggression in such books. By analyzing 301 picture books, this study found that the average picture book contained 1.36 aggressive acts, and that aggressive acts were more likely to be included in picture books meant for older children. Verbal aggression was the most widely used type of aggression in children's picture books. There was no significant relationship between the type of character (human or nonhuman) and whether the character acted aggressively. Male characters were more likely to be shown aggressing towards other male characters; they were also more likely to be shown using physical aggression and violent ideation. Aggressive acts in children's picture books are more likely to be portrayed as unjustified, with no consequences, and no adult involvement to help resolve the situation. Children's picture books could be a useful tool for parents, teachers, and adults to teach children about aggression and appropriate solutions for resolving conflict.

Abstract:
This analysis of children’s literature attempts to understand the relationship between social reproduction and ideology. This thesis argues that children’s literature written by Lynne Cheney is a cultural artifact that constitutes an ideological history. In addition, it argues that her books can be used by ideological institutions to strengthen socially accepted practices through the theory of social reproduction. Since there is a lack of theory regarding cultural artifacts in literary studies, an adoption from the field of pedagogy called the theory of hidden curriculum is used to explain social reproduction. The process of social reproduction reinforces socioeconomic structures put in place in order to reinforce social norms.

Abstract:
While picture books are often viewed as educational resources for young readers, it is crucial to not overlook the images and content this literary medium contains. Research suggests that repetitive messages encompassing a stereotypical nature cultivate lasting impressions on young audiences. One portrayal often associated with negative implications is the depictions of older characters in children's first literature. This investigation analyzed a selection of picture books from the New York Times best sellers list, the Book Sense best sellers list, and the Caldecott award winners for the years 2000–2010. In an attempt to provide a time spectrum communicating the levels of ageism that remain prevalent within the last decade, over 700 illustrated literary works were included in this exploration. Although conclusions supported a continuation of the under-representation of senior adults that is congruent to similar studies, findings suggested a significant improvement in the overall portrayal of older characters in illustrated books. This result communicates an optimistic outlook in continuing the promotion of positive attitudes for children regarding the aging process.

Sousa, Eunice Maria da Silva. "Strategies for the science communication of biodiversity." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/16500.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Biologia
The present work aimed to contribute to understand the public perception of biodiversity, to find patterns of biodiversity representation in communication pathways and to promote strategies to modify stereotypes towards biodiversity, creating a more aware and active public through environmental education and citizen science projects. Four studies were developed under the following subjects: 1) understanding young adults preferences about animals, 2) comprehend how biodiversity is portrayed in children’s books from the Portuguese National Reading Plan, 3) evaluating the impact of an environmental education project on the public awareness of ponds and associated biodiversity, and 4) understanding the potential of a Citizen Science approach to map ponds in the Portuguese territory. The results from the various studies showed a limited and distorted public view and awareness about living beings. This was found to agree with the biodiversity portray patterns in children´s trade books, which seem to constitute important sources of information about biodiversity during childhood. The present work also described the implementation and evaluation of a resourceful environmental education strategy that was able to change the public attitudes towards ponds and associated biodiversity, especially the amphibians. Finally, it also showed that the implementation of a Citizen Science action was able to engage citizens in pond conservation actions and create the first map of ponds in Portugal through the use of Volunteer Geographic Information mechanisms. The work used innovative methodologies of data analysis and project impact evaluation that can be useful to future research in science communication.

Abstract:
This research examines the integration of electronic book (e-book) technology within an academic library. The University of Ottawa library is explored as a qualitative case study. The perceptions of use and communication pertaining to e-book adoption from the perspectives of students, faculty members, and librarians are combined with other documentation to provide a comprehensive examination of the case. Rogers (1962; 2003) Diffusion of Innovations provides the theoretical framework to guide the study and structure its analysis. Main findings revealed the following: (1) participants preferred print books, (2) inadequate communication occurred between students, faculty members, and librarians, and (3) information literacy training initiatives were insufficiently standardized. This study contributes to communication research by examining adoption of e-book technology and the spread of ideas within a social environment. It also furthers Diffusion of Innovations by confirming that even when individuals acknowledge advantages of a communication technology, it is not necessarily adopted.

Abstract:

Holiday, Steven John. "Where They Least Expect It: Product Placement in Children's Picture Books." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4434.

Full text
Abstract:
Product placement has been intensely studied in almost every mass communications medium. One notable exception is in children's picture books where scholarship on the placement of products and brands has been severely underserved despite a steady presence in a medium integral to socialization and society. The present study recognizes the unique characteristics of the shared reading that takes place in this medium and explores its effects on memory for and attitudes toward product placements within children's picture books. Using a laboratory experiment, quantitative statistical analysis of resulting data, and qualitative exploration of themes resulting from subjects' responses, the present study demonstrates that the practice of shared reading positively affects both recollection and attitudes toward product placement in children's picture books. It also discusses the results in the context of their ethical and practical applications and implications.

Dhawi, Fahad A. "Redesigning Arabic learning books : an exploration of the role of graphic communication and typography as visual pedagogic tools in Arabic-Latin bilingual design." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2017. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/13472/.

Full text
Abstract:
What are ‘educational typefaces’ and why are they needed today? Do Arabic beginners need special typefaces that can simplify learning further? If so, what features should they have? Research findings on the complexity of learning Arabic confirm that the majority of language textbooks and pedagogic materials lead to challenging learning environments due to the poor quality of book design, text-heavy content and the restricted amount of visuals used. The complexity of the data and insufficient design quality of the learning materials reviewed in this practice-based research demand serious thought toward simplification, involving experts in the fields of graphic communication, learning and typeface design. The study offers solutions to some of the problems that arise in the course of designing language-learning books by reviewing selected English learning and information design books and methods of guidance for developing uniform learning material for basic Arabic. Key findings from this study confirm the significant role of Arabic designers and educators in the production of efficient and effective learning materials. Their role involves working closely with Arabic instructors, mastering good language skills and being aware of the knowledge available. Also, selecting legible typefaces with distinct design characteristics to help fulfil various objectives of the learning unit. This study raises awareness of the need for typefaces that can attract people to learn Arabic more easily within a globalized world. The absence of such typefaces led to the exploration of simplified twentieth-century Arabic typefaces that share a similar idea of facilitating reading and writing, and resolving script and language complexity issues. This study traces their historical context and studies their functional, technical and aesthetic features to incorporate their thinking and reassign them as learning tools within the right context. The final outcome is the construction of an experimental bilingual Arabic-English language book series for Arab and non-Arab adult beginners. The learning tools used to create the book series were tested through workshops in Kuwait and London to measure their level of simplification and accessibility. They have confirmed both accessibility and incompatibility within different areas of the learning material of the books and helped improve the final outcome of the practice. The tools have established the significant role of educational typefaces, bilingual and graphic communication within visual Arabic learning.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes as topic of research the hypothetic triad formed by Architecture, Science-fiction and the Comic-books. The intention is multidisciplinary, researching inner relationships and demonstrating the potential within the whole trinomial scenario, as a method of understands the current fluctuations in the architectural practice. At the same time, the study was focused to develop and apply transversal skills directed towards the others components of the triad, providing i.e., useful concepts from architecture to science fiction and/or to comic-books. All the relationships founded are dynamic within the triad, and can be grouped into two types, defined in this thesis as "elastic" or "plastic" ones, in a metaphoric but methodological analogy of the two types of collision in physics. “Elastic” actions grouped individual manifestations, developed as internal problem from each disciplines of the triad, with little -or zero- impact on counterparties used as a reference. These cases, with theoretical and pedagogical utilities, were the most frequently examples found in this research, and presented as potential interdisciplinary backgrounds of experimentation. “Plastic” actions grouped binomial and/or trinomial manifestations that containing fusion intentions. Those examples are few, especially when looking from architecture and then focus to the other(s) component(s) of the triad. The opposite case often happens; i.e., throughout history, directors of science fiction films -and also many comics artist- have used buildings, architectural spaces or a fragmented architectural concepts as an important component of his works. The methodologies was developed along nine study cases, divided into two classes: those that develop specific disciplinary knowledge (about specifically science fiction or comic books, out of architectural traditional background), and those in which at least a binomial relationship between concepts exists (architecture vs. science fiction, or architecture vs. comic books, or even comic books vs. science fiction). The first type of relationships refers researches about comics and science fiction as disciplines, focused on its artistic form, philosophy, styles, techniques and tools. These researches were indispensable for the development of the rest of cases, especially those leads to find new links with the architectural project. The second type of relationships have been investigated to generate a complete discourse, both analytical and documentary, based on hybrid between the components of the triad, but understanding the potential of the relationships -binomial or trinomialestablished, and focused with broader perspectives (multidisciplinary ones) from the architectural field. The conclusions reinforce the principal hypothesis; most of the hybrid manifestations found from architectural discipline and related to comic-books and/or science-fiction, generally come from professionals, sectors, groups or movements that rather than trying to build something “real”, use the projection tools as a means to convey theories and concepts, or simply communicate their own "architectural messages", using hybrid languages that derived from the multidisciplinary characteristics of the trinomial. The huge potential in this thesis refers to the alternative visions about concept of innovation and creativity resulting from any “merging condition” between artistic disciplines, potential which been objectified from architecture is measurable and feasible, with processes that involve thinking and the practical level of future implementation. These actions would achieve its best benefits working as "toolboxes", new alternatives for communicating architectural languages

Abstract:
The project Language of the Book Volume I-III explores the conceptual and the bodily experience of reading and making books. The essay presents the development of Volume I: Narracube consisting of three storytelling prototypes. With Narracube a format was developed that can invite stories to be told beyond single voices, linear time and fixed points of views. Narracube highlights the active role of a medium in transmission of a message. A book is never a neutral container for ink but an active space of communication in its mere contruction despite its content.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using Systematic and Engaging Early Literacy (SEEL) intervention activities that incorporate digital books to teach kindergarteners to read. The study used a single-subject-multiple-baseline-across-behaviors design to compare kindergarten students' reading of comparable CVC words before and after intervention. Four students at-risk for reading difficulties were chosen for the study based on their performance on assessments and their teachers' recommendations. Students were divided into two dyads and received intervention three times a week for 25 minutes for approximately six weeks, or 18 total sessions. Baseline assessment data was collected prior to intervention, and performance on each target was monitored through the same assessment task after every intervention session. Students received SEEL instruction on one set of word targets while a comparable set was kept at baseline phase. After six intervention sessions on the first set of word targets, a second set was introduced while the first set was monitored for maintenance. Finally, a third set of target words was introduced and taught in six sessions, and the first two sets of words were monitored for maintenance. Instruction involved using meaningful and interactive activities that incorporated playful practice, multiple exposures to targets, explicit statement of the goal, and reciprocal teacher-student exchanges where students' contributions were acknowledged and incorporated into the lesson or meaning construction. After being exposed to the target words (orally and in writing), children were provided with additional opportunities to read and write the words within digital books created on the iPad.

Abstract:
The following study examined identity construction and community formation within the comic book fan community on the social media website, Twitter It had three objectives It investigated how comic book fans constructed their respective identities on Twitter, explored how fans came to identify with the comic book community and why it formed, and aimed to discover how the community was maintained and expanded The study applied an ethnographic method that relied on the analysis of dialogue Ten comic book fans (five males, five females) that frequently used Twitter to communicate with other fans were video interviewed It was found that comic book fans constructed their identities using their Twitter biography and profile picture and they all believed they were communicating their true and genuine selves The biography, profile picture, and tweets reinforced the rhetoric of what it meant to be a comic book fan It was this visual and written rhetoric that enabled comic book fans to identify with one another and bring the community into being Without this rhetoric, there is no community The community maintained itself through the continued reinforcement of this rhetoric It expanded itself by bringing comic book fans from different backgrounds, locations, and nationalities together online around a shared interest The study also found that the relationships formed within the community could develop into real friendships, the same caliber of friendship that individuals would normally have with those they knew and met in real life.

Abstract:
In my Degree Project I developed a case study of two independent publishers that promote children’s literature with a special focus on diversity and challenging gender stereotypes, situating them within the bigger framework of activism for gender equality and against homophobia in Italy. I looked at the potential of children’s literature as a significant instrument of communication for social change and analysed the publishers’ activities as a form of activism, specifically connected with the sphere of education. I narrow my analysis to two publishers: Lo Stampatello, specialising in children’s literature against gender stereotypes and homophobia, and Settenove, specialising in the theme of gender equality. I analysed first a selection of texts from these publishers and then some of their diffusion practices, through which they engage with other entities dealing with gender equality and LGBT rights. I see these publishers as self-aware agents of change, that produce messages about equality, deliberately diffused into the public and specifically targeting an audience of children, parents, teachers and educators, and that play an active role in the scenario of contentious politics [Tilly and Tarrow, 2007].

Abstract:
This essay has examined the children’s book author Sven Nordqvist’s use of rhetorical visual stylistic figures in four of his books: Var är min syster?, Hattjakten, Pannkakstårtan and Minus och stora världen. The main focus of the essay has been investigating aspects of his visual style that may have contributed to his great success. Some of the stylistic figures that we looked into are metaphor, synecdoche and paradox. The analysis has showed that the stylistic figures reinforce and invigorate the pictures as they are creating a fruitful visual reading experience for the readers. The results indicate that the rhetoric of Nordqvist’s visual stylistic figures probably has much to do with his success, being valuable sources of imaginative reading.

Abstract:
In this creative project, I propose that comics can be used fruitfully to introduce undergraduates to the image-word dynamic, helping them become betters critics, more thoughtful consumers, and more effective creators of images. In addition, I argue that such a course of study be housed in an undergraduate rhetoric and composition major. Therefore, this project accomplishes three goals: it explores the rhetorical function of comics; second, it justifies the inclusion of comics in an undergraduate rhetoric-composition program; and, third, it provides a master syllabus for four classes that would provide the experience necessary to students wishing to study visual, verbal, and visual-verbal rhetorics.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University , 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is concerned with a study of the two basic elements of communication, namely image and text. How these basic communication tools function in the genre of the visual narrative with regard to their roles in the comic strip and the artist's book, will be examined. Both genres, the comic book and the artist's book, consist of complex structures regarding their workings in the framework of the visual narrative, and this work explores these complexities by analysing how image and text function in the visual narrative. The area of semiotics is used as a basis on which the arguments in this thesis are built. The principles contained in semiotics act as useful guidelines in the reading and understanding of communication in general, but in this study these principles give focus and structure to the research of especially the comic strip and the artist's book. Concepts that are discussed in depth include the interesting interactions which occur between image and text when they are used together. Signs, icons, symbols and how they function with (or without) text, are also examined. Text can also function as image, and this visualisation of text is explored. The role of concepts like interpretation, perception, the study of images and image-association, are all very important in the visual communicator's eventual success with his/her communication. How these concepts influence the creation and forming of one's visual intelligence and visual literacy, and the eventual effect it has on the process of communication, make up a very important part of this study. These arguments lead to a discussion of the dynamics contained in the visual narrative when looked at from a semiotic perspective. Central to the discussion on the visual narrative in this thesis, is the differentiation between two similar genres: 1) Firstly, a discussion of the functioning of the comic strip medium. Important aspects of this subject are the interactions of image and text, and how the comic medium consists of a unique set of symbols, which influence the specific communication in this genre. 2) Secondly, the genre of the artist's book, and how the medium of the book functions as a unique phenomenon in communication. The systems of meaning contained in the medium of the book are looked at against the light of a semiotic analysis of text and image. This research supports the importance of a semiotic approach as a helpful aid in the interpretation of any piece of communication, but especially that of the comic strip medium and the artist's book. The theories of Charles Peirce, Ferdinand de Saussure, Roman Jakobson, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Umberto Eco are used as basis of the arguments in this thesis and serve as valuable ground for a useful discourse. The implementation of above mentioned theories lead to an indication of the complexities involved in the special visual language of the comic strip and the artist's book.
