Abstract:
The seasonal diets and feeding selectivity of common wombats (Vombatus ursinus) in mountainous eucalypt forest, eucalypt woodland and pasture were determined using faecal analysis. Grass species contributed the largest proportion (95%) of epidermal fragment area in faecal pellets, with at least 20 species being eaten. The most abundant grasses in pellets in all seasons were the tough, wiry snow grasses (Poa sieberiana and P. labillardieri), with Microlaena stipoides comprising a substantial proportion of the diet in summer and autumn. Grass leaf was the most abundant plant part in pellets (81%), with grass stem and grass sheath comprising 11%. The seasonal proportion of grass seedhead in pellets varied from just traces during autumn and winter to a substantial component of the diet during summer (21% of epidermal fragments in pellets). Forbs comprised less than 1% of pellet material, and tree or shrub species were not detected in the diet. Feeding selectivity (and hence dietary niche breadth) varied seasonally; wombats become less selective in their feeding as plant diversity and abundance decreased. Positive selection was shown for monocots and negative selection for forbs. Grass species were eaten in broadly similar proportions to their abundances in the field, but with moderate to strong selection or rejection of a few species.

Abstract:
Background: Breast feeding is the optimal method of feeding in infants and provides improved short and long term health outcomes. The objective of this study was to identify common breast feeding problems in mothers in early postnatal period. Methods: Four hundred and ninety-four mothers in early postnatal period admitted in Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre were enrolled in this study during the period from March 2016 to June 20016.All the mothers were questioned regarding about their knowledge of breast feeding, health education received during Antenatal visits, the problems during breast feeding and were also observed for any mistakes of mothers during breast feeding. Results: In this study, the age of the mothers was in the range between 18-38 years. Out of them most were house wives (87.5%) and from urban area (78.4%). This study showed lacking antenatal education of mothers about breast feeding. Among the study group only about 13% had the knowledge about breast feeding, which reflects real breast feeding problems especially in the postnatal period which is critical period in starting and continuation of breast feeding. Among the problems encountered, majority of the mothers had no experience how to hold the baby in right position for breast feeding (16.5%), mothers believed that milk was not sufficient (13%) and the refusal of the baby to suckle (8.7%).Conclusions: This study clearly shows that there is lack of knowledge regarding importance of breast feeding and its benefits to the baby by mothers, during antenatal visits which leads to all problems during breast feeding and hence has to be tackled earlier during pregnancy by educating them about breast feeding.

Kigozi, Frederick. "Feeding biology of common and blue duiker." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004725.

Full text
Abstract:
The blue duiker, Philantomba monticola and common or grey duiker, Sylvicapra grimmia represent two of the three duiker genera as well as two of the three species occurring in Southern Africa. The two species have not been adequately studied in their habitats within the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, and this thesis centres around their biology with focus on diet and dental microwear. Faecal analysis was used to study the diet of blue duiker at Salem in the Albany district, and of common duiker on two farms, one a predominantly cattle farm at Kasouga and the other a farm for cultivation of chicory at Grants valley, both in the Bathurst district. The validity of faecal analysis was reviewed, and its applicability to blue and common duiker assessed. The method was appropriate for diet analysis of both species, as the common duiker is shy and secretive and the blue duiker is a rare and protected species which does not habituate readily. Results showed that the blue duiker was mainly folivorous with a seasonally stable diet of 79 percent dicot foliage and only 17 percent fruit. Common duiker diet at both study sites comprised mostly dicot foliage, with only two monocotyledonous plant species. Twenty-seven and nineteen plant species were identified in the diets of common duiker at Kasouga and Grants valley respectively and the annual percentage occurrences of dicot foliage in the diets were about 99 percent at both study sites. The predominantly browsing common duiker, therefore offered negligible competition for food resources to the grazing cattle on Kasouga farm. Both blue and common duiker fed selectively, with approximately one third of the total number of plant species identified in their diets providing at least 50 percent of the food eaten annually. Ehretia rigida was the most important plant species in the diets of both duiker species. Chicory, Chichorium intybus provided more than one third (35.6 percent) of the winter diet and a substantial proportion (14.4 percent) of the spring diet of common duiker at Grants valley, thereby confirming earlier reports of this species feeding on chicory and other cultivated crops. The diet of common duiker at Kasouga did not vary seasonally but that of common duiker at Grants valley did vary and this was attributed to utilisation of chicory. Results from the dental microwear analyses did not show any significant differences in dental microwear between blue and common duiker, but supported and confirmed that the two were browsing species, characterised by many pits and few scratches on their dental surfaces. A high incidence of pits was found on the dental surfaces of both duiker species, and was attributed to utilisation of fruit in the diet.

Abstract:
Problematic feeding and sleeping is an unrelenting issue for many parents. Research has identified that childhood obesity may be related to both areas. These are two aspects of development very heavily influenced by parents. This study therefore addresses the question “is there a relationship between problematic sleeping and feeding in infants?” It further considers whether parenting style is a common link between the two. Nineteen parents of children aged between 18 and 48 months were interviewed about their parenting strategies in general, and more specifically about feeding and sleeping behaviours of their children. They also completed diaries and questionnaires. The data was analysed to ascertain whether there was a relationship between feeding and sleeping problems and whether these problems related to a number of parenting measures. Strategies utilised by parents to handle feeding and sleeping problems were also ascertained. The sample that volunteered for this study did not report sleeping and feeding problems so information about these problems was derived from diary measures. Feeding and sleeping problems were evident on these measures and parents employed numerous different strategies to handle them. There was no difference evident in the strategies adopted by parents of preschoolers with and without sleep and feeding problems. There was no evidence that problems in sleeping and feeding were correlated and there were no correlations between feeding and sleeping problems and any of the other parental measures.

Abstract:
Seabirds are often used as indicator species for changes in marine ecosystems due to the species visibility and sensitivity to changing conditions, such as changes in prey abundance. They often reside in habitats affected by anthropogenic impacts such as large-scale fisheries and pollution. Understanding the connection between seabirds and their surrounding environment can give us important insight about the ecology of the ocean and how anthropogenic pressures affects it. Studying feeding habits, and foraging behavior especially, is useful for understanding seabird´s responses to changing environments. Feeding studies are commonly used in seabird monitoring and requires a lot of time and resources. Monitoring of seabirds are also logistically challenging, and the risk of disturbing bird colonies must be considered. It can be especially complicated when studying cliff nesting seabirds such as the common murre, Uria aalge, the study species for this thesis. Photography as a method for monitoring seabirds may limit the need of people on site, hence minimize disturbance and save time and resources. This study provides insight in whether it is a viable option to use photography instead of on-site field studies when monitoring sea birds. This was accomplished by installing cameras and monitor a feeding study at Stora Karlsö, Sweden, parallel with performing the usual monitoring in the field. This thesis makes it clear that a camera study very well could replace the field study without any larger concerns, although, improvements need to be considered if the study is to maintain a high quality and for results to be reliable.

This thesis investigated feeding behavior, cirral anatomy, Reynolds numbers (Re's), and leakiness of the cirral fan for three barnacle species: Balanus glandula, Semibalanus cariosus, and Balanus nubilus. A study of the feeding of B. glandula revealed that newly-metamorphosed juveniles fed at Re's less than one and their cirral fan leakiness was <5% at current speeds of 4 cm/s. At this speed, large and medium individuals fed at Re's near unity, and their cirral fans were 6.8±O.7% leaky. The experiments were repeated using S. cariosus and B. nubilus with the same tissue mass as B. glandula. No clear species-specific or size-specific trends were identified in these species. The observed switch from low to high Re feeding in B. glandula may indicate a lower limit to the size of this species, if further research confirms low Re feeding is less efficient and field current velocities are sufficiently low.

Vazquez, Maria Begona Santos. "Feeding ecology of harbour porpoises, common and bottlenose dolphins and sperm whales in the northeast Atlantic." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.286846.

Full text
Abstract:
The diet composition of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena), common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus ) is described from stomach contents of animals stranded in Galicia (NW Spain), Scotland, Holland and Denmark between 1991 and 1996, and some older material (1976 - 1991). The present study also provides the first descriptions of population structure for cetaceans off Galicia. Diets of harbour porpoise in Scotland, Denmark and Holland consisted primarily of inshore demersal fish. There were differences between seasons and areas and to a lesser extent between sexes, age-groups and years. Whiting, sandeels, cod and viviparous blenny were among the most important prey. Common dolphins on the Galician coast took a wide range of inshore and oceanic fish and cephalopods. There were some seasonal differences in diet, but blue whiting, scad and sardine predominated all year round. Bottlenose dolphins off Galicia also took a wide variety of prey with blue whiting and hake being the most important. Sperm whales in the North Sea had been feeding almost exclusively on the oceanic squid Gonatus fabricii, although several other oceanic squid species were also eaten. Many of the prey species eaten by dolphins and porpoises are also the target of commercial fisheries. Dolphins and porpoises were mainly eating smaller size classes of fish than those taken by fisheries. The weight of prey eaten by sperm whale and harbour porpoise populations in the NE Atlantic was estimated from the dietary data and published estimates of population size and individual food requirements. Sperm whales could eat more than 1,000,000 tonnes of the oceanic squid Gonatus fabricii annually. The 95% confidence limits for porpoise consumption of whiting are as wide as 2,600 to almost 30,000 tonnes, depending on the assumptions made. This reflects the high level of uncertainty about population size and structure.

AbstractMalnutrition is observed in around one in three hospital inpatients; this harmful ICD10-AM-coded disease is a strong independent predictor of adverse older adult and healthcare outcomes, mortality, and treatment costs globally, particularly in multimorbid, older adults. Despite recognition of malnutrition as a disease, nutrition support prescriptions are often not valued as the medicine to treat it. This chapter is devoted to the common nutrition support prescriptions for treating malnutrition: (1) protein- and energy-dense and/or fortified foods, fluids, and menus (HPHE support); (2) oral nutrition supplements; (3) enteral tube feeding; and (4) parenteral nutrition.

Abstract:
AbstractCleft lip and palate are facial and oral malformation due to failures in the embryologic craniofacial development during early pregnancy. A unilateral cleft lip and palate is the most common type, whereby the upper lip, the orbicularis muscle, the alveolar bone, the floor of the nose, and the hard and soft palate are interrupted, creating an open communication between nasopharynx and oropharynx. Patients with a cleft lip and palate are treated in specialized cleft centers by a multidisciplinary team. Having cleft lip and/or palate has a noteworthy impact on quality of life and psychosocial functioning. Postoperative scarring is a common cause of patient dissatisfaction. The goal of cleft lip surgery is to close the lip, provide optimal function in terms of speech, mastication, dental protection, breathing and feeding, and provide an aesthetically pleasing facial scar. Precise surgical technique and adequate aligning of anatomical structures is important for the postoperative aesthetic result and scar formation. Different surgical techniques are available for this purpose. Optimal scar management can be divided in surgical (precise surgical technique, planning, and adequate aligning of anatomical structures) and nonsurgical methods (botulinum toxin, silicone application, carbon dioxide fractional laser).

Abstract:
Abstract The innovative Common Feeding (CF) fuel injection system has been designed for a light duty commercial vehicle diesel engine in order to reduce production costs and allow easy installation on the engine, compared to a traditional Common Rail system. In the CF apparatus, a delivery chamber with a volume around 10 cm3 is integrated in the high-pressure pump. The chamber at one side is connected to the pump, and at the other side is linked to the solenoid injectors by means of pipes (the rail is removed from the hydraulic circuit). Experimental tests have been carried out on a hydraulic test rig at the Politecnico di Torino in order to compare the general performance of the prototypal CF system with that of a Common Rail (CR) system equipped with different rail volume sizes (realized by manufacturing rails of the same length but with different internal diameter). The injected mass flow-rates of single injections as well as of pilot-main injections have been captured by instantaneous flow-rate meters. In the case of the double injection schedules, the dependence of the injected mass pertaining to the second injection shot has been investigated during dwell time sweeps and design solutions have been provided to minimize the oscillations of such injected mass with respect to dwell time for the CF system. Furthermore, the injector inlet pressure time histories, the static and dynamic injector leakages, the nozzle opening and closure delays and the injected volume cycle-to-cycle dispersion have been evaluated for both CR and CF systems. In general, the injection performance of the injection systems with different hydraulic capacitances or shapes of the accumulator is similar. One significant difference is that the injection rate feature slightly different slopes during the rising phases. Furthermore, cycle-to-cycle dispersion in the injected mass increase to some extent when the accumulation volume of the high-pressure circuit is dramatically decreased. Finally, the frequencies of the free pressure waves that are originated by the water hammer, which occurs at the end of a hydraulic injection, are different when the shape of the accumulation volume change, whereas these frequencies are basically independent of the accumulation volume size.

Abstract:
A production common rail type injector has been investigated via numerical simulation and experimentation. The functioning principle of the injector has been carefully analysed so as to obtain a mathematical model of the device. A zero-dimensional approach has been used for modelling the injector, thus considering the variables as function of time only. The analysis of the hydraulic part of the injector resulted in the definition of an equivalent hydraulic scheme, on which basis both the equations of continuity in chambers and flow through nozzles were written. The moving mechanical components of the injector, such as needle, pressure rod and control valve have been modelled using the mass-spring-damper scheme, thus obtaining the equation governing their motion. An electromagnetic model of the control valve solenoid has also been realized, in order to work out the attraction force on the anchor, generated by the electric current when flowing into its coil. The model obtained has been implemented using the Matlab® toolbox Simulink® and solved by means of the NDF (Numerical Differentiation Formulas) implicit scheme of the second order accuracy, suitable for problems with high level of stiffness. The experimental investigation on the common-rail injection system was performed on a test bench at some standard test conditions. Electric current flowing through the injector coil, oil pressure at the injector inlet, injection rate, needle lift and control valve lift were gauged and recorded during several injection phases. The mean reflux-flow rate and the mean quantity of fuel injected per stroke were also measured. Temperature and pressure of the feeding oil, as well as pressure in the rail were continuously controlled during the experimental test. The numerical and experimental results were compared. The model was then used to investigate the effect of control volume feeding and discharge holes and of their inlet fillet, as well as the effect of the control volume capacity, on the injector performance.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this research was to identify chromosomal regions and candidate genes associated with control of concentration and forms of carotenoids (includes pro-Vitamin A) and tocopherols (Vitamin E), which are both antioxidants and are associated with health advantages. Vitamin A and E are included in animal feeding supplements and the eventual goal is to increase levels of these compounds in maize grain so that the cost of these supplements can be reduced or eliminated. Moreover, both compounds are antioxidants that protect unsaturated fatty acids from oxidation and thus maintaining maize oil quality for longer periods. We identified three SSR markers that are associated with 38% of the variation for total carotenoids and three SSR markers associated with 44% of the variation for total tocopherols in the cross W64a x A632. We identified two candidate genes associated with levels of carotenoids: phytoene synthase and zeta carotene desaturase. Evaluation of (Illinois High Oil x B73) B73 BC 1S1 population for tocopherols detected additional chromosomal regions influencing the level of total tocopherols, and detected a common region on chromosome 5 associated with ratio of the more desirable alpha from to the gamma form of tocopherol. The results suggest molecular marker assisted selection for higher levels of these antioxidants in corn grain should be feasible.
